MEET THE HOTSHOT KID THEY CALL C.P.
NYI’s deadline acquisition arrives at the Coliseum
Two dozen wrapped Bauer Vapor XXXX composite sticks, all stamped “PICK,” stood outside the Islanders locker room, as did the equipment bag adorned with the Penguins logo. “Hey man, hockey is a business,” said the Islanders’ major deadline day acquisition. “Even Wayne Gretzky got traded, I think.”
Conditional Pick, an under-sized defenseman with huge upside, visited the Coliseum late tonight. Scott Gordon was unusually tight-lipped about his plans for the newest Islander. “To be awnest with you,” said Gordon, “I couldn’t tell you what he’s going to be. Our scouts say he could be a 5, a 4, maybe with some luck he becomes a 3.”
The native of Pickering, Ontario said he enjoyed his time in the Pittsburgh organization and was looking forward to lining up with their big stars. “To get to play with Miro Satan in Scranton was kind of a dream of mine,” he said.
But he’s taking a glass half-full approach. “I’m proud to be in such select company. I mean, how many guys can say they were traded for Bill Guerin”?
Pick was impressed by Guerin as the two players made the traditional swap of living arrangments to ease the late-season transition. “Billy couldn’t have been cooler,” the kid said, “but I hooked him up, too. I’ve got his 10-bedroom house on the North Shore, and he’s all set with my billets in Sudbury. The dogs can be a bit much, but the Byrnes and Dugan families are great, great people.”
Before the 5-6, 140-pound puck-moving dman left for the Marriott, we asked where he hoped to spend his first full season of development in his new organization. “I’m gonna push for a spot with the big club in camp, but if the Islanders decide I’m not ready I’ll put in my time on the farm team,” said Pick.
“That’s in Sarnia, eh”?
A full report from Thursday’s Islanders-Rangers morning skate is next. Comments.

CB – Did you got Gabrielle’s tonight and sample the wine?
-
*go to
-
Are you drinking Botts????
Get some sleep… lol.
-
lol. chris, you are a very talented man. moving into satire, eh?
-
haha I cant wait for people to start searching a dman with the last name pick on hockeydb
-
Too bad C.P. will end up being traded yet again come draft day
-
Wait, who is Conditional Pick? I can’t find hin on NHL.com or TSN or anything.
Yes, i’m kidding.
-
CP is a better skater than trent hunter..lol
-
wonder if the appetizers at gabrielles will be as good as before lol…thats all im saying to this post
-
thanks for injecting a little humor.
there has been too much shit slingin’ here for a week now. it was getting boring. -
Hopefully CP helps us out on Draft Day.
Pull a Ditka… package up all the picks except our first pick, and move up as high as you can in the draft.
What do you think they are worth on the open market CB?
-
Great Work CB. In times like these we need Comedy! lol
-
We needed to lighten things up a little bit after the last couple of days. Thanks Chris
-
Nicely done. Brilliant stuff, C.B.
-
I can already hear the chants at Nassau Coliseum… “CP!! CP!! CP!!”
-
humor is exactly the right approach…and to all those younger fans disappointed by no big deadline deal, chin up…as those of us who were fans in the ’70s can tell ya, it just takes time…each year we would suffer some depressing defeat in the playoffs (outclassed by the Habs dynasty two straight years, physically beaten up by Leafs, outplayed and upset by the Rangers when it was we who thought that the Finals were ours) and each year we patiently added players, and weeded out those who were just not talented enough or didn’t have the grit and determination to win it all…everybody said we would never win, destined always to be a bridesmaid, etc., etc…now we’re very unlikely to win 4 cups in a row again, but hang in there, they’re going in the right direction, and unless Snow starts impersonating Mad Mike, it will get better (hope this little attempt at a pep talk doesn’t violate the guidelines in any way)
-
Mr.Pick? I still choose to call him by his real name! Stu….Stu Gots!!!! Stuey!!!! The Stu Man!!….STUUUUUGOTS!
Nothin… a waste!!! But it was pretty exciting. Kept all of us tuned in!
Great Stuff CB! -
Absolutely excellent CB. Excellent.
-
All the air has gone out of the balloon….SW
-
CB is so good, that pick will definitely turn into a 5-6 140 pound puck moving d-man.
-
Chris, do not make the mistake of poking hockey fun at Sudbury or any other Ontario locale. Hockey is a religion here, as is supported by the Canadian national record. Any shot at us in hockey terms is considered a national assault! That being said you are one of the classiest in the business and the lifeline for us distant Isles fans. Keep up the great work!
-
This is becoming a problem. I know the day overall was slow but Snow’s innability to complete a trade is mind boggeling.
And not for nothing, Mike Milbury botched a lot of trades, on deadline day the guy didn’t mess around. You needed draft picks the guy got you draft picks.
I don’t get it.
-
Pretty funny CB
-
I just hope Snow doesn’t screw up the draft. He is a meat head and every GM will take advantage of him on draft day. The organziation’s worst move ever was probably Wanger firing Neil Smith. He could’ve been our savior.
-
I did the math and the Isles are short one forward unless Park or Hunter are back from injury. It’s the Rangers, it Avery, it’s Torts……it’s Fritz time. Seriously for Ranger and NJ. Then if a guy isn’t back from injury you can call up Collotton.
I noticed Pock was activated. I don’t know if the Isles are sending a d-man down or plan on dressing 7 d but I would not.
I examined the roster and I see 6 definite forwards for next year. Probably three more that could or could not be here, several that won’t, and you figure if they take Tavares that is one spot. Defense wasn’t much better so LOTS of work still to be done.
Today was a let down. Let this be the end of small puck moving d-men PLEASE!
-
Hows Snow a meat head? GMs taking advantage of him? Show proof. If you make an accusation, you need to back it up with Facts.
-
I hear this guy is an old school player though. He rocks the barry melrose hockey mullet. We’ll sign him to a conditional contract: He can stay as long as he wants, but only if he keeps the mullet. I would pay to see someone with a true, crappy hockey mullet
-
Chris, give me some of that grass you be smokin’.
-
Not bad CB, Not bad at all.
-
CP was the most popular hockey player in the world this past weekend, his trade for guerin got CB millions of hits haha. CB you should at least hook the kid up with an official point blank tshirt or something
-
I think it will be really funny if they go out of their way to find a guy with the initials C.P. HAHA
…wherever the cp becomes after the playoffs.
-
After reading this post…I think we’ve all collectively snapped in Islanders nation.
-
The really funny part is I can just see the Isles having a 5-foot-6, 140-pound defenseman in the not too distant future.
-
In a related story, C.P. is already pondering whether he can fit into Coach Gordon’s system. “Wouldn’t you like to know what I’m thinking?” he remarked. “But what is said in here, stays in here,” he smiled, tapping his head.
“Now, for a 15 year $67.5 million dollar contract …”
-
YAY. This was great CB. Made me laugh which is what I needed after this disaster of a day.
-
So… does this mean that C.P will be the nickname of whichever soul the Isles actually DO take with the Guerin-obtained pick?
-
Funny but still doesn’t make me feel any better.
-
Stretching your creativity. Very impressive.
-
What the hell has Jon Sim done to land in Bridgeport? And what about that contract we gave HIM? I believe we could have gotten more for Guerin. Maybe the original deal (the Sat pm deal) was better. But how does Tampa Bay warrant what they got from Boston for Recchi? Maybe cuz Recchi’s salary is much lower? But still. I hope Pitt goes far and we at least get a 3rd. Gawd. And who’s gonna stand up to Avery? Hillen? Martinek maybe. Jackman, Thompson – ok.
-
I believe Chris was sending a little message of what many of the posts from yesterday sounded like after the Guerin trade.
-
Just what every fan needs….a good laugh and a reminder this IS a game!
Get some sleep. -
Another tough trading deadline for our backup goalie/GM. Surprised we kept Weight, but if he is signed to another 1 yr deal, makes sense. Hey Chris, can you comment on Robin Figren making his way to Bridgeport next week for some conditioning and practices. Can he make the team next season?
-
Too bad Figren went back to Sweden this year. He might have been given some NHL time this year.
-
Just ordered my C.P. Retro jersey with number 5-3 on it!
-
CB — can you write a post that shows some of the other bonehead moves that other gms have made. I’m tired of seeing these blockheads complain about Snow. They complain that the prospect pool was bare….and what does Snow do???? He sets us up with 24 picks in the last 2 seasons. Snow is doing a brilliant job putting the pieces into place. Please, go watch the Rags or Devils if it’s that bad. Just don’t jump back on this bandwagon when it gets rolling.
-
CB
Any updates on DiPietro’s knee?
Just curious how things are going on that front, or can we expect to draft another goalie first overall. -
Isn’t Figren going to Bridgeport? Did I not hear that somewhere?
-
Kendish Enulpik – hey nowadays the country is full of crazy names
-
Hey everyone I just heard kate murray on bloomberg 1130 we need to support the toh with their industrial projects to create jobs and revenue for the town…. ummmm kate have u heard of something called the lighthouse project that is going to do exactlyyy that
-
Lol, CB, you are genius
-
OK CB, it’s pretty obvious the past few days have taken their toll! LOL
Yes, we can all use a drink next week.
. . and a win against the Rags!
-
Hey Steve-O I validate what you said.I also reside in Sudbury.
-
All in all – I can’t really slit my wrists over what happened yesterday. I think Snow did well on the Campoli/Comrie deal – and if that happened yesterday instead of a few days ago – the tone today would be different.
That said, I do think Snow misplayed his hand a bit with Guerin – but I don’t doubt that the market dictated the price. Keep in mind that if Vancouver really wanted Billy G – he could have wrecked the deal…….so Snow had one hand tied behind his back not of his making and the other one of his making ( the botched trade with the “mystery team”)
We were not dealing from a position of strength here and other teams knew it.
Back to the Tavares Derby…..
Pat
-
That was a great read, nice to have a laugh.
-
Good one CB, way to put a little levity in this debacle. I’m curious though, do players really swap living arrangements for end of the season trades?
-
HEh, CB… you know what they say… you take a swipe at Sudbury and the Wolves come out.
-
Introducing the New York Islanders Bail Out Stimulus Plan! 16,234 free tickets to 41 home games. Come See the AHL’s best get waxed on a nightly basis and a GM sign has beens and sign Broken Down arrogant goalies to 15 yr contracts. Additionally, our GM will trade for CP’s that sure to figure into more of AHL’s finest!
-
On behalf of the rest of Canada, we knew it was a spoof.
But really, what did Sim do to Gordon or Snow. What???
-
guys, the deal yesterday was b/c a deal we had fell thru. makes not sense for Snow to bring Guerin back to isles after sitting him out.
Well likely get the 3rd pick for it and its better than nothing. Last year we got noting for comrie, satan and fedetenko. Somehing is better than nothing.
Isle will be a better team next year. Let Danis play tonight so we can beat the Rags, and then play Mcdonald the rest of the way. His 4GAA a night will guarantee we finish last.
Sign Danis, Cut Mcdonald this summer and then have Danis split time wiht DP.
Playoffs next year would not be out of question. Cup is about 3-4yrs away.
-
Thanks for keeping us posted and sometimes smiling over the past 5 G-less days. It is said that a little suffering is good for the soul – okay I’ve had mine, let’s move on. You are truly amazing. Do you ever sleep? Looking forward to PB 11. Maybe we will all be in a better frame of mind by then.
-
They play hockey in Sudbury?? I thought that was a Tennis town? I heard the C. Pick had to choose between Hockey & Tennis before he starts his college career @ UNH
-
Sim did nothing to Gordon. Sim just signed a contract that is too expensive for Wang. Wang is going to stay at the bottom of the cap until he gets approval for the Lighthouse, moves or sells the team. This years free agent signings will really reveal what Wang’s intentions are when it comes to spending money on salary. The Isles might not sign anyone but let see haow hard they try.
-
Spartiarti – We know why the deal happened, and that the market was tight yesterday, and that Garth did the best he could do. Question though…do you think Burke walks away with a probable fourth rounder for Guerin (If you hate Burke, insert your GM of choice)? It’s an honest question; I’m curious to see the answer. My opinion is I don’t know the circumstances around this particular deal, but I think if we just keep accepting that “no one wants to play here,” and “we can’t trade our assets” every year, we’re setting the bar awfully low for our GM.
-
You guys amaze me. For the first 60 games of this year you have done nothing but throw Sim under the bus. Now that he has cleared waivers and been sent down you talk like he is the second coming of Mike Bossy
-
CB, Is there anyway we can get the #1 and #2 picks in the draft this year. Even two picks in the top 5. I think this may be evil Frosty’s plan. I think we need Tavares and Hedman not either or. Wishful thinking or SJ 1st plus our early 2nd plus Mark Streit. I think it would get done.
-
nhlfan (60) – Last time I checked Sim gets paid $1m whether he plays in NHL, AHL, ECHL, UHL, how does that save Wang any money?
-
I was just kidding too, Chris. I’m surprised you responded to that. I was just taking a shot at our oversensitivity to all things hockey.I don’t even live in Sudbury. Great town though, been to a couple Wolves games and Cowboy’s bar!
-
I thought we already drafted Aaron Ness.
Bazing!
-
UIF, I think guerin was trade by snow to try to help him too and get something in return. Pitt could give Guerin a chance at a cup. This could increase Guerin chances at getting another contract next year too. Whether it be with islanders or another team in Northeast. It really think Billy Guerin and his Family like it on LI and have would prefer not to move.
What is this talk about Streit. He has 3 more years and has been improving his game. If anything you trade him at the end of next year if we are not in playoff picture.
Who cares about SIM> leave him at bridgeport. maybe he can win calder cup and get MVP.
-
Clever. I love the wit
-
nice one justin, post 72. i thought the same thing. I actually got confused by CB when i started reading it. Took me a paragraph to realize he as just having some fun.
CB definately needs some sleep. Thanks Chris for wonderful updates. 1000+ hits daily for over 2nd time in week is quite impressive. Looking foward to night at Gabrielles.
-
Big Jim, thats a shame, I’ve never been more excited to watch the worst team in the NHL. The way they’ve played over the past 2 weeks, esp at home has been great. This is the rebuild yr1, see what happens in year 3/4 then talk about being disgusted. Obviously there’s no guarentees but we have to give it a chance
-
Bad News …. C. Pick is out with a lower body injury (either a groin or hip)
-
Rich (67) – Streit is going nowhere but here for the balance of his contract. He’s been worth every cent he’s been paid and was an all-star on merit.
-
post76 MikeF – unfortunately that alot of fans are like Big Jim. They dont realize rebuild takes time. I think most important thing we can do is finish dead last this year. You are 100% right, they are alot more fun to watch. This is most excited i hvae been about isles in long time. I wanted rebuild for last 3 years.
You can’t buy a winning team. You have to grow it. True in every sport.
I guess people thing we going to suck for 4 yrs. that is not true. Look at Philly, they blew out all the vets, got picks. and signed a good free agent here and there and made it to 2nd round of playoffs.
Isles will be a better team next year if DP is back and healthy. Big Jim will be jumping up and down next year when John Tavares is making a splash.
Way to go Snowy. He made one mistake as GM and that was making a milburish deal for Smyth. Since then he has been doing all the right things.
-
Sim going to the bridge has nothing to do with money. That I am quite sure of. I am not sure if the islanders will meet the cap floor, however, being sent down with the way he is currently playing leads me to believe that he must have pi**ed in Gordon’s skates. Or something. What was it??
-
Or he could be the anonymous quotes that Logan goes to for his stories.
-
Could they have waited one more game to send down Sim? Not that he’d be a difference maker tonight–but he’s one more player who can stand up to Avery when the inevitable nonsense starts. As a season ticketholder, I dread these games where the vermin take over half the building. Maybe, I’ll bring a spraycan of Raid.
-
Jim #68, I thought that if a player is sent down the NHL club saves money off it’s cap. I figured this move was more of an accounting move than a player move. But i could be wrong.
-
I do realize that Sim is not the second coming or anything. I also know what he is capable of bringing to a team. I have been his ONLY supporter for the entire year at this blog. CB will attest to this. Just wonder how they can get away with TANKING it so bad.
Hey Snow, We have some kids on our local high scholl team that are pretty good and will play cheap. You might want to the rest of your NHL players down to give these guys a look.
-
This post makes me want to start drinking, and it’s only 9:30 central. Where’s my bloody mary?
-
CB – this was the worst post you have ever had
-
84- So wrong, this post is awesome.
-
CB- That was GD Hilarious!!! I fell out reading that … but heck … after 4 days of waiting … and seeing what would happen … we all kinda knew deep inside it was going to be anti-climatic … Your post was the best way to sum it up … I just hope you are wrong about CP’s size … LOL!
I know everyone is going to get on Snow about what he got in return … but I give him props for salvaging a trade for BG… it might of been a mistake for pulling him out of the game on Sat and commiting to a deal that wasn’t set in stone… and from what I got thru the grapevine … the other team couldn’t move a player that HAD to be moved to make it happen… so GS was a lil premature pulling a player that proved to be durable … but second guessing Snowy does nothing … so I’ll just say I’m content and give him an A- for Comrie / Campy … and a B- for BG for CP.
-
I am having a difficult time coming to terms with rooting for Pittsburgh to go far into the playoffs. *gag*
-
don’t like this post CB. you should be condemning Snow’s lack of skills on deadline day.
-
Hey, it could be worse, we could be a ranger fan and just witness our GM, trade away our 2 top prospects Prucha, Dawes and at one time Buffalo’s top defensmen for 30 YR OLD DEREK MORRIS!!!! They may have gotten Avery back and traded for Anthrapov(spelling) but once again they are looking for a quick fix to make the playoffs!!! This offseason they are going to trade Dubinksy and Korpokoski(spelling) and Marc Stall for Chris Pronger and Peter Forseberg!!!
This rebuilding process takes time, if we only got a 5th-3rd round pick for Guerin, well yea it kinda sux, but its better then getting nothing at the end of the year…Everyone keeps bashing SNOW and CO. but they are building the right way, through drafting..Once that part of the rebuild is near completion, hopefully we will have a NEW stadium and thats where we can fill in the pieces with FREE AGENTS…This team has at least 2-4 yrs to go before we are once again a force to be rekon with.. Sit back, enjoy the ride, stop complaining and have a beer on CB!!!
-
#77 gives the example of Phily I would add 3 more – St Louis, Phoenix and Los Angeles. 5 teams (and I include us) are in fact ahead of the curve. In these days of a salary cap – and one that is likely to go down not up – you cannot buy winners any more by overpaying for veterans. Can anyone say Rags?
It has to be by way of the draft and building a team over a period of time.
This team was in a worse state than most as the farm system had been allowed to wither on the vine and the only way to restock is by ammassing draft picks and then use them wisely. -
My no means am I a stick in the mud, but honestly CB.. I read your blog on the trade and didn’t find it the least bit funny.
In fact, I just shook my head, as that’s the reality of what our leading goal scorer and team Captain can get as a UFA. I know there are other aspects hamstringing the deal, but it’s just pathetic.
-
I am going to say it again. Islanders need some size in the lineup tonight against the Rangers. No Witt and the Rangers have Avery and Orr. Islanders have to make sure that their young guys do not get run. Since we are obviously striving for last, putting a meathead in the lineup should not be an issue.
-
CB, you are no Swift, but not bad satire for a PR guy.

Speaking of satire… Why is Sim now headed to Bridgeport? Is this another Bialystock and Bloom move to ex-isle anybody with even a hint of productivity. We wouldn’t want the team to slip from LAST PLACE? Or is Sim just an absolute ****?
I hope Hillen isn’t going to be on the bus as well for Pock…
What’s the dope CB? -
#88, I think that is what he exactly did. In a skilled, crafty, elegant way. Read it again.
-
Sim is terrible, dude. stop with this recent productivity garbage. too little, too late from a seasoned vet does not deserve respect and playing time. he had his chance, and just like that breakaway he had last week, he whiffed on it.
-
Amen 95.
We really need size tonight, we have open space, Fritz or Wrecker needs to come up for tonight. Orr ran all over the place last time.
-
Rather have Thompson butt heads with Avery than Sim, care to disagree? I hope we win tonight and next game then lose the rest of the games on the schedule by one goal late 3rd period
-
I have to think if Pock is back that would mean Andy MacDonald goes back to B-Port.But with Guerin gone does that mean we get another look at J.J.??
-
Gordon was pissed for some reason the other night right when Sim passed to Mccammond for the first goal. Video feed cut right to Gordon and he looked real pissed off then he discussed something with Gallant.
-
Keep Fritz in Bridgeport. Orr is tougher than anyone on our team. Dont bother. Let Orr be a liability when on the ice.
Have Jackman run people over, and have Nate Thomspon slap Avery around.
Enough said.
Agree, Drop the SIM commentary. All he is good for consistently is bad penalties. Drive me crazy when people talk about his stats. It reminds me of when poeple talke about Sean Hill and his + on-ice rating a few years ago. Its b/c he was in the penalty box the whole time.
McDonald and Sim suck.
-
Anybody have an idea where to find late round draft picks that turned out golden? A pick is a pick, and although we are still sifting through Mad Mike’s picks, there usually are a few diamonds in the late rounds. This early in a rebuild, you would think the more picks the better.
I think with a hot goalie, the Pens could easily make it into the second round. Who wouldn’t love to see Bill Guerin score the goal that sends the Rangers home and the Isles to a third round pick?
-
What we should do is see who CP turns into and follow him every step of the way.
-
100- Orr will kill Jackman, without a doubt and wont be a liability. Hence, put Fritz out there with him. Jackman wont run anyone over if Orr is out there.
-
Brain from Jersey #75… turns out C. Pick’s injury is neither hip or groin… but Gout… and he may never play in the NHL due to the chronic condition.
-
I want Fritz. If we’re going to lose to the Rags, can we at least have an enteratining fight or two to watch? When was the last time there was an all-out brawl at an Isles Rags game? I think it was when Gutless Puke Purinton turtled to Cairns. Far too long.
-
If he doesn’t have a bad right hand, I say bring Haley up. He fights bigger guys. Callahan is no slouch, either. At least these guys stick up for teammates.
-
Even in our fantasies, our players are undersized. CB — can you at least let us know what the prospect thinks of Go-go’s system?
-
How bout Guerin and a 3rd for Laraque………oops wrong day
-
Garth Snow blew this Gueren deal.
-
Thompson is worthless. Just a Gordon boy, that is the only reason he is in this line up. Everything Gordon sucks including Thompson. Wonder who our coach will play in net. Hate to lose to the Rags but would hate to lose first overall more! Hope Gordon keeps his winning “attitude” and plays Jmac. On a brighter note Danis looks great and seems to have the tools to be at the very least a dependable backup.
-
I needed to read this post. Now I need another beer.
-
I hope they play Joey Mac…We don’t need Yann stealing a win for us
-
Let’s play Fritz 20 minutes tonight and the worse goaltender we can find.
Also, I see that nobody wants Kolzig, he would be a good insurance policy for next year if healthy.
-
106 i never said said have jackman fight orr.
I said no point in having fritz there for his 2mins icetime only to lose to Orr.
i guess you werent at the last isles rangers game. Jackman was running over everyone. Orr did nothing except take a dumb penalty trying to get jackman to fight. Works for me.
A want to win again rangers. We have 19 other games to make sure we can finish in 30th.
if you want the easy loss, very true play mcdonald. Only Jaffe and Rose thing McDonald is good.
-
Kolzig has been finished for two years man, live in the now. Please with the fritz nonsense. He is usesless, its like putting trevor berbeck on skates
-
Exactly Madchef, anything to help us lose legitimately!
-
okay fair enough, sounds good to me.
-
LOL @ post 75. I mean, with this team you just have to laugh at that.
-
Obviously CB’s fingers are all worn out from the last week, so I will try to answer some of the questions here…
Sim is being sent down, so in a week the isles will call him up again, if, at that point a team wants him, they can claim him @ half of his remaining salary ( all of 200K?)cheap enough to warm a bench through the playoffs.
And Everyone needs to remember that in order to make a trade, someone has to want to make a trade WITH YOU. Information travels, and the other 29 GM’s in the league all knew about Billy’s situation, so why would they freely give up a good pick when they know Garth had very few options?? Would you pay 20 bucks for a burger when you know everybody else is paying only 5??
Give Snow a break, yeah he hasn’t turned the ship around overnight, but He hasn’t done anything to sink it either. At least, fopr the first time in years, there is a plan… -
Good comments Jim from St James. I get the feeling that there are several people that post here that would like a quick fix or in other words…spend big bucks and turn this team around. I like that the Isles are building through the draft, rather than throw around ridiculous money to players that don’t deserve it. If you can believe it, TSN was talking about how Chicago would like to unload Campbell and his millions as he is not what they were expecting!?

Clever. Nicely done.
