PHILADELPHIA 4, ISLANDERS 3 (shootout)
Next year’s team the same? Game Chat here

by admin on March 28th, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Here’s what Islanders GM Garth Snow told Dan Martin of the Post for a story in today’s editions: “The team we have next year will be very similar to the one we have now. I expect a lot of players to develop.”

That’s fairly consistent with what we’ve written the last six months. The one big difference, of course, is the 2009-10 Islanders will have John Tavares or Victor Hedman or Matt Duchene. But if you were looking for a big splash in free agency come July, you cannot say Snow didn’t warn you.

The Islanders are still rebuilding.

*

For one night, all talk about the true meaning of late-season wins and losses was put aside. The Islanders’ 2-0 victory last night against the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings is undoubtedly something they can take with them during Rebuild Year 2.

Perhaps an even tougher test arrives tonight, when the Islanders host the Flyers after getting home late last night. The Red Wings did not need the two points last night. Philadelphia does tonight.

It appears Doug Weight may go back-to-back and be in the lineup tonight. No word on the goaltender, although it’s reasonable to assume the original plan was to start Yann Danis against the Flyers.

With 8 games remaining, the Islanders are 6 points “up” on Colorado for the No. 1 seed heading into the draft lottery. The Avalanche have 7 games left. Tampa Bay “trails” the Islanders by 7 points.

Talk about tonight’s game in Comments. I’ll have coverage from the Coliseum.

  1. avatar Yashin for President says:

Colorado looks so bad… Dont see them team winning too many games

  2. avatar db says:

I dont understand how they dont sign a 6-7 million dollar year free agent. they are 10 million under the cap floor and have 11 forwards signed (including tavares) and 7 defenseman and 1 goalie signed. if we have to spend to the cap floor shouldnt we sign a 6-7 mill per year guy like gaborik/havlat or should we sign weight @ 3 mill and 2 other guys at 2 mill each. it doesnt make sense i hope hes bluffing. if you have to spend get real talent.

  3. avatar db says:

great win last night but i have a really bad feeling about colorado. a loss last night would have meant if we go 500 for the rest of the year and colorado/tampa get no points we still would finish last. love the win but it really might come back to haunt us. i hope im wrong. my biggest fear is we go 5-2-1 the last 8 games finish second and drop down to 3 and then god only knows what snow does.

  4. avatar Giaco says:

    (2) Money only goes so far. Some guys (some***) actually want to win more than make that extra mil or 2

  5. avatar TIM says:

stay the course GARTH,those islander fans that are impatient “too bad” do what we have to do to get to the CAP FLOOR other than that give our young guys experience “THATS THE WAY TO BUILD THIS TEAM”

  6. avatar bonzo says:

spending won t be a problem…weight will get a similar deal; hilbert will get a nice raise; thompson too; yann danis will be locked in, as will joey; mccammond may not get any other offers either…

  7. avatar thepolishprince says:

I’d say that pretty much sinks anyone’s pipedream of landing Jay Bo.

  8. avatar Jim says:

I wasn’t really expecting them make any huge moves anyway. If whoever they draft at #1 or #2 gets a rookie max deal, their cap hit is going to be around Stamkos’ which is $3.725m.

  9. avatar thepolishprince says:

Wow – I had no idea the rookie max deals were so high.

  10. avatar Coach B says:

Unless there is good value, this is not the summer to go all out for free agents. The year after, if the cap drops as predicted the Islanders want to be in good shape for 2010-11. There are a lot of teams facing salary cap problems in the next few seasons.

  11. avatar doc says:

I am on board with PASSING on Jay Bouwmeister… Komisarek… et al.

Let’s not over-value either of those two guys. They are not Denis Potvin or Ray Bourque!

Stay the course, add through the draft… possible moderate level trade or mid level FA signing.

    DOC

  12. avatar themass says:

Agree with those that say stay the course. If this rebuild actually works it would be weird to think of Snow being the one that saves the Islanders. I remember when they named him GM. Never expected this

  13. avatar Jim says:

Gregoire scored for ND, unfortunately that stupid lacrosse game went into OT.

  14. avatar Coach B says:

I went to a few of the open houses the Islanders had last spring. Snow and Jankowski are putting a premium on hockey sense and on both Islander goals vs Detroit hockey sense lead to the goals. Kyle is so confident with the puck, head up while stickhandling. Neilsen kept on going and when he broke into the clear, great pass by Okposo and pateniet and confident moves by Neilsn. The Bailey goal was what Snow and Jankowski saw in Josh, after losing the draw went after Lidstrom, when Jackman got the puck and headed for the front, Josh broke to the net and arrived just before Lidstrom to put in Jackman’s centering attempt. Those goals make you smile.

  15. avatar Coach B says:

The stupid lacrosse game is not got. Speaking of hockey sense, Jason Gregoire has plenty of that.

  16. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

You still need to spend money to get to the cap floor. We will have at least 10 million to spend.

I still like a young guy to play left wing like Franzen, or Cammalleri.

    5 year 5.5 million/ year for Cammi… or 5 year 4 million/ year for Franz.

Not crazy about JBO, or Komi.

  17. avatar Chickendirt says:

    GOOD!!!!

No more 30+ year old UFAs here!!!

    Thank Dog for that!!!

The best interest of this franchise is to stick with building young and develop some assetts. No more of having big potential players wallowing in Bridgeport only to be shipped of somewhere else for potatos.

I imagine how much better off this team would be even we just kept a guy like Torres. Good to see we have a minimum of at least three blue chippers to start next season.

  18. avatar TIM says:

We still have to sign our own RFA”S and decide if were keeping some of our UFA”S that 10 million isn’t for just UFA’S

  19. avatar goislesgo105 says:

I’m fine with that. Let the kids play and develop. I’m having fun rooting for them!!After next year, Snow should have a real handle on how the rebuild is going, who to keep and who to get rid of. I’m real excited about Ok, Bailey, Bergy and Franz.I liked what I saw from JJ too. Not convinced yet about Tamby or Comeau. GO ISLES!!

  20. avatar Dave says:

I think Comeau could be a solid third line winger when he uses his body well, Tamby doesn’t belong in the NHL period, and like you said Okposo, Bailey, Bergy, Neilsen and Joensuu (and I’d even say Smith) appear to be promising.

  21. avatar Staten Islander says:

I kind if expected that. I don’t expect any top tier free agents to come here with the Isles being in year 2 of the rebuild plus the uncertainty about even where they’ll be located. I’m ok with the plan

  22. avatar mm30 says:

A)I hate lacrosse…ESPN has six channels and I still can’t watch UND vs UNH.

B)Even if Garth has intentions of pursuing any UFA’s he’s not going to say he is…it’s a great thing cause it shows he’s learning from his mistakes (see summer 07)

    C) The cap is staying at or coming down next year–which means the floor is coming down as well. We will have no problem hitting with a top 2 or 3 pick having a 3.5 cap hit.

  23. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

We don’t have much to resign.

    Hilbert, McAmmond, Hillen, and Pock..lol.

You may want to throw a contract extention at Bergy, but that is it.

And that 10 million is being modest, it could actually be closer to 15 million.

Keep Hilbert and Hillen around. Maybe McAmmond if you want some veteran depth.

We have lots of money to spend. That’s why I mentioned some young studs on LW.

Pick one guy that would fit the system and go after him hard.

Just don’t throw million @ old veterans, because they say they want to be here.

Only because nobody else will sigh them.

  24. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I would hope this is a lot of what we’ll see next year in addition to the draft picks and more guys progressing.

Yet, there are still plenty of places for improvement.
Upgrade guys like Hilbert, Martinek, etc.

Go for the FA’s, not on a crazy level but there are three very interesting FA’s this year Bouwmeester, Franzen, and Komisarik. According to numerous articles few teams will be in a position to bid on their services with the cap right now much less being reduced in the following year.

The Isles are one team that can. You’d have to think they impressed Franzen last night. Say what ya want but Montreal is now a disgrace of a franchise. They fixed the all-star ballot, team fell apart, several players are mixed up in shady business not just this year but over the years, they fired their coach, their GM might get fired too, makes the Isles look like a much better situation right now.

Some teams will have to move salary and good vets can be had that way too.

  25. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Chris Botta, Rhett Rhashanski’s season is now over. I don’t know if he has any more college eligability left or not. Do the Isles have to sign him this year to a pro contract? It would be neat to see him at the Bridge but it is either this year or next.

  26. avatar mm30 says:

I’m sorry but the Isles are not a better situation than the Montreal Canadiens…the only way the Isles get a top free agent is if they absolutely blow teams out the water and the top guys usually have several teams after them.

This team is not attracting free agents based on 6 good weeks of play…build the arena-get competitive then start thinking about free agents.

  27. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

get a solid D man locked up long term for a decent price and i would be happy. Ricky will need all the protection he can get when he returns so he can stay as healthy as possible all season. The offense should start to take care of itself soon enough between the kids and the next draft. No need to waste money on camalleri, higgins, or anyone else.

  28. avatar Brooks Simpson says:

I think Snow’s keeping expectations low, because the last two summers have left Islanders fans scratching their heads. That said, I think there will be some talent available, largely because the cap probably will go down for the following season (2010-11), and that means teams near the cap will have to scale back and think carefully about long-term commitments. That offers the Isles an opportunity.

CB’s right about tonight’s game. It’s one thing to do the unexpected one night: to do it back-to-back (even if Philly’s not Detroit, and the Isles are at home) would be impressive.

For me, of course, last night brings back memories of my favorite road upset win: the hapless first year Islanders 9, the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins 7 … in Boston Gah-den.

  29. avatar AZS says:

I really love the way this team is playing (hopefully they end up in last place). I feel that with the guys they have up now, add one of the top 3 picks – plus Joensuu – and you’ve got a fun team to watch ….

Anyone else notice how much harder and faster they skate without Cement Boots (Hunter) and Guerin out there?

Last place or bust! Then after next season add at the deadline or pick up free agents ….don’t rush the process …we’re on the right path …

  30. avatar Isles4cups says:

CB – I disagree that Detroit didn’t need to 2 pts last night.
Here we go again with the Gaborik fan club. Geez, can we please let this injury riddled guy out of some of your minds? What a nice goal by Nielson last night. Macdonald made some big saves along with his goal posts! I’m all for these young guys growing together in the years to come rather than throwing out a whole bunch of money to some pre-madonna free agent. We’re almost assured a top 3 pick, and possibly Snow and crew will try to move up with Ottawa’s 1st rounder as well.

  31. avatar mm30 says:

Barry calls Gregoire “awesome”. Gotta love it.

  32. avatar Pat says:

Garth needs to explore every avenue possible in order to improve this team. Guys like Thompson, Pock, Hilbert, should not be signed just because they could be had cheap. I want Garth to stay the course too, and play the kids and let them develop, but signing one big goal scorer( Gaborek or Franzen ) would only speed up the process.

  33. avatar DC23 says:

    CB:

I watched every shift of the Rags-Pitt game and Guerin was worse than bad. The good news is Pitt keeps winning and the draft pick keeps improving. Keep up the good work!

  34. avatar Bryan says:

I’m fine with that but after trading Guerin and Comrie dont we have to sign someone to get to the cap floor?

  35. avatar drouin says:

Hope he’s just setting expectations. It’s not easy to convince guys to sign on LI. If he has a shot to speed up the rebuild he must make every effort to do so.

  36. avatar isles fan says:

righty D for the pp is a must.

  37. avatar CJCB says:

Lacrosse rules!!! Cant wait to see Rechlitz/Cote, Rechlitz/Asham. Lets go W.I. Lions Lacrosse, going for another State Lacrosse title this year!!!

  38. avatar Strummer's Army says:

The Isles have a coach and GM in place and Montreal does not.

Montreal could be under new ownership.

Locker room is fractured according to TSN.

    Isles in better cap position.

Isles finishing the year stronger rather then falling apart.

  39. avatar mLemb says:

Crazy finish to that period….good play by Kessel to track that puck down and keep it in play

    Looking forward to OT

  40. avatar beatlebailey says:

#28 watch out AZS all of the hunter lovers will not be happy…lol…if we make one move this offseason please let it be trading that ice tortoise!

  41. avatar isle_in_LA says:

Hockey = fastest game on ice
Lacrosse = fastest game on foot

  42. avatar mLemb says:

    that was quick…UNH wins

  43. avatar Coach B says:

Excellent game for Gregoire though ND lost. Last night Princeton was eliminated by Minnesota-Duluth. Wonder if the Islanders have any interest in Princeton forward Cam MacIntyre ? He is a big power forard type.

  44. avatar Let'sGoFlyers says:

Get ready for the Flyers invasion tonight! 350+ Flyers fans are on their way via bus to the Island as we speak. Go Flyers!!!

  45. avatar KO21 says:

I know it’s 2 games in a row but I believe Joey Mac earned the start for tonight, IMHO…

  46. avatar ALL ISLANDER FANS REVOLT!!! says:

I have to admit I’m happy that Colorodo sucks, take that Ryan Smyth!

  47. avatar Mike says:

What a scam-”the Islanders are still rebuilding”. Please pass the kool aid Snow and all who believe ANYTHING he says are drinking. Wang’s scam is so obvious to anyone who chooses to SEE instead of blindly FOLLOW. Wang REFUSES to INVEST real money in the team with the excuse that he can’t with the diliapidated Coliseum but he REFUSES the TOH’s offer to IMMEDIAELY renovate it because his ONLY TRUE desire is to OVERDEVELOP the site and if he can’t that he will DUMP the team he NEVER gave a darn about. Meanwhile his cover for investing the LEAST amount of money in the team is that he is REBUILDING. Nonsense-if you believe that then I have a bridge to sell you.

  48. avatar Jim Clark says:

The Islanders are so poor they had to lay off the Ice Breakers in mid season to save a few dollars. They still have the GM who gave a 15 year contract to DiPietro. They cover up details about injuries

At least Snow/Gordon are being honest in saying the team will look pretty much the same in 2009-10 before the deadline for renewing tickets.

  49. avatar Islanders1932 says:

The Islanders should stay course and give the young guys their turn this year. I say next year is when you throw out a big offer to Kovalchuk who is a young guy to and would fit perfectly in this rebuild. I would offer him an 8 year 64 million deal. But that’s after next season anyway.

  50. avatar Coach B says:

Because of the length of the North-Dakota-New Hampshire game, BU and Ohio State will begin on ESPN-2 at 6 PM.

  51. avatar eye on the island says:

mike, when they offered an inordinate amount of money to ryan smyth and he turned it down, was that being cheap?

throwing money at players does not win champs-nothing breaks my heart more saying this, as ive watch the yankees throw away the past 8 years.

and also, what free agents are going to come here if you throw money at them? obviously not too many

and since you complain about the policy, who do you think they should spend money on. if you got a critique of something, please offer a counter

  52. avatar Ray says:

Just saw Travis Hamonic and Max Gratchev walking the concourse with two other guys I couldn’t see.

  53. avatar Let'sGoFlyers says:

The Flyers army should be arriving shortly!

  54. avatar Madchef says:

sorry to say flyer fans but when was the last philly championship of any kind…..as for the rebuild it is sad that before free agency starts that we will not be in the hunt for a FA. Makes the first pick even more important and needing to be a slam dunk. With a healthy DP am I crazy to think we can contend for the 8th seed next year. Maybe premature but you would think with the current roster we will be better next year.

  55. avatar Let'sGoFlyers says:

When was the last Philly championship? That would be October.

  56. avatar admin says:

Yes, there will be a lot of Flyers fans in the Coliseum tonight. I went to school in Philly and interned for the Flyers. They have incredible fans and they are welcomed here. But this space is not going to turn into silly back-and-forth. Enjoy the game and keep the conversation at a good level. Thank you for the consideration…CB

  57. avatar Let'sGoFlyers says:

Just preparing you. They’re coming by the busload. 6, to be exact.

  58. avatar Bridgeport fan says:

54 the last championship for Philly was last baseball season. Remember the Phillies beat Tampa.

  59. avatar Mike from Philly says:

    Lets Go Mets ;oP

  60. avatar Willis says:

Of course Garth’s gonna say the team will look mostly the same next year, since most of the same players will be on it. I’d be happy to take one good Free Agent and I don’t really even care if its O or D so much, just as long as he’s responsible, skates good enough for Gordon and has a little size. And not lazy.
I’ve been trying to watch Tambellini and I’m feeling like he’s getting comfortable now. Even though he gets pushed around, he’s also delivered some surprisingly solid hits lately. And of course he’s got that good wrist shot. I’m gonna keep watching him, wondering again if he’s just a slow starting NHL’er.

  61. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Trevino with a goal for BU. Now onto the Isles tonight. Hopefully a piece or two will be added this offseason, on top of our pick but I am not surprised with the statement from snow. Party on Garth!

  62. avatar DLR says:

Tambellini is not an NHL caliber player and re-defines softy. And, please dont wish the Wrecker to fight: its been pretty sad thus far. Lets look respectable and lose for the pick.

  63. avatar art says:

The isles dressed a BIG team last night and the little guys wern’t pushed around. SIZE counts!

  64. avatar Rob from Queens says:

Took me 20 minutes to find the game on cablevision because their tv guide is wrong and then when I find it, it looks like it is being broadcast from the moon!! What’s up with this… the Apollo missions came in clearer…. so glad I bought this hi-def tv!!!

  65. avatar MT says:

I see on the stat sheet Bailey got a 10 min misconduct, what for?

  66. avatar MT says:

    Nevermind, it was Weight’s

  67. avatar DLR says:

Amazing how its guys like Weight and Guerin who drop the gloves for the team. I still think most of our youth is missing thos guts. Maybe its generational, I dont know. I miss the old time hockey.

  68. avatar Rob from Queens says:

CB, In my opinion, which is worthless, I think the thing the Isles need most in the draft is a top notch forward that can play on the level of Okposo/Bailey.. if we land the 2nd pick, and the price of moving up a slot for Tavares is too high.. Should we move out of the 2nd pick since Hedman’s stock is so high??..Here me out… I got two scenarios for you… please tell me your opinion on both:
Option1: move down one or two slots give up the 2nd overall for either the third or fourth pick. Take the best forward available with that pick (Duchene, Kane)plus that teams top defensive prospect in their system, and that teams #2 pick in 09….. we get a top forward to play with Okposo/Bailey, a real good defensive prospect (obviously a few notches down from Hedman), and a high 2nd round pick…

Option #2 move down from the 2nd pick to the 9th or 10th overall and grab Jordan Schroeder, plus that teams best defensive prspect like the first scenario. The only difference is since we are moving down alot further, we take that teams 2010 first rounder instead of an 09 second rounder… Both these scenarios get us a top skilled forward and very solid defensive prospect, along with a draft pick…. Does this make sense??
My apologies for going over the word limit..

  69. avatar eric says:

    here we go boys!

  70. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

    Hey Rob…

How about trade down to 3rd or 4th. Take Duchene or Magnus… plus their second this year and 1st next year.

  71. avatar C.J. says:

… well, CB, if that’s true, then Snow’s a moron.

This team needs far more than what they have on the ice. It’s that simple. Promise and development aside, they’re the worst team in the NHL.

  72. avatar Justin says:

I understand the rebuilding has to continue, but why not target one free agent and go after him hard even if it’s not a marquee name? What they did with Streit was perfect. They said here’s your chance to be a No. 1 defenseman and here’s all the ice time you want. Do the same thing with a forward or a physical defenseman.

  73. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Did anyone thing that maybe Garth doesn’t want to tip his hand? If he says to this reporter that he is going to chase one or two marquee names then we all would be so excited just to be let down again. Just let him do his thing and enjoy the strides that have been made this season. There is no way we do not have fresh blood here next season but like I said don’t look for Snow to tip his hand, especially in late March.

  74. avatar Rob from Queens says:

    Hey Jimmy Mac,

I like your thinking… I just thought we needed to add a top defensive prospect since we don’t have any in our system and it would shut up the people you know will be screaming “how could you pass on Hedman”….. but I love that kid Schroeder…

  75. avatar admin says:

The first two playoff games of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers will be played at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the week of April 17. No word yet on ticket information, but I thought I’d pass the news along…CB

  76. avatar eric says:

    lets roll. nice shot tamby.

  77. avatar mLemb says:

    Tamby…WOW

  78. avatar Frank James says:

    THE RECHER!!!

  79. avatar M Howard says:

What did Thompson accomplish by picking that fight with Carcillo? FYI, Matt Gilroy has 4 assists for BU as they’re beating OSU. What a great fight between “Wrecker” and Cote!

  80. avatar CMB says:

Matt Gilroy has four assists this evening against Ohio State.

  81. avatar eric says:

    old time hockey. baby.

  82. avatar Rob from Queens says:

    Great fight by Reichlitz…
If we go after one free agent this off season… I want a heavyweight to keep other teams honest… I’m sick of the Nate Thompson’s and Doug Weight’s having to fight…. You put a Brashear on the roster… other teams will be alot more careful…. Reichlitz and Jackman are sorta light heavyweights.. :) Give me one of these new breed 250 lb heavyweights!!

  83. avatar Ari from Long Island says:

What the hell is going on!!!???

They’re leading 2-0!!! We have to start losing!!!

If we aren’t 30th overall, and we get jipped at the draft, I’ll be LIVID!!!

  84. avatar Will77 says:

man, great goal by Tamb’s and what a fight by Rech’s. Thompson definitely lost the undercard, way to go by Rech to get the momentum back in the main event.

I’m admittedly in the “I want the #1 pick more then wins this season” group, but this has been a fantastic weekend of Islander hockey.

  85. avatar eric says:

    did you see cota face.

  86. avatar Pat says:

    Jackman just got rocked

  87. avatar Justin says:

I still love Asham, one of my favorite Islanders. I was a little torn during that fight.

  88. avatar eric says:

isles are out playing the flyers bad.
i guess they dont realize there in 30th.

  89. avatar Rob from Queens says:

I think Asham just knocking the crap out of Jackman proved my point that Jackman is a light heavyweight (as a matter of fact, after that fight, lets call Jackman a middleweight), and we need a true heavy!

  90. avatar db says:

we will not finish last. the win against detroit will end any chance of us finishing last. it disgusts me.

  91. avatar mLemb says:

it disgusts you that we are beating playoff teams? especially those fighting for a playoff spot? Gimme a break, I’d rather build what we have then rely on our record of 1st round busts as the end all be all

  92. avatar eric says:

you can’t win a cup with one kid.
    the aves do suck though.
    good on are kids.
    and the rags lost too.
    gotta go.

    go fish!!!

  93. avatar Blizzard says:

Nice fight by the Recker, Jackman got…..well jacked! Im enjoying this game. If you where oblivious from the standings you would never guess the Islanders where in last place. First Detroit, now Philly. Especially because there are alot of Philly fans here.

Lets make their bus ride home a bummer.

  94. avatar db says:

bottom line we won that game yesterday against detroit because a journey man goalie stood on his head. it wasnt like we outplayed them. if we lose out on tavares/ hedman and pick 3rd we might as well be picking 6th its a non event. i like what the kids are doing but being a season ticketholder for almost 20 years i want that franchise player.

  95. avatar patrick says:

    this team is beyond frustrating

they played like crap when it mattered this yr and now when they need to get the 1st or 2nd pick they’re playing so tough

    makes me sick

  96. avatar isle_in_LA says:

Easy. When the games mattered, the system was new to everyone. Now, they’ve had a whole season to learn the system and gel. I for one am proud of these guys and 1st pick or not, I’m excited about the future.

  97. avatar patrick says:

i dont need to be easy, i need a top 2 pick

that’ll make this crap season worth it, not some meaningless wins

i’ll be proud when they win a playoff series

  98. avatar isle_in_LA says:

    I take that back:)

  99. avatar Sally Williams says:

What’s up with Danis? Not sharp again!

  100. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Well all I can say is that I am glad I didn’t start Danis on my fantasy team tonight.

  101. avatar isle_in_LA says:

    Now THAT is frustrating…

  102. avatar Pez says:

this is very good if we won this game we would be only 4 points behind the avalanche and they are really sucking so i dont trust that type of lead

  103. avatar Pez says:

    n thennnn streit scores lol

  104. avatar Sally Williams says:

    Thank you Mark Streit!!!!!

  105. avatar Pez says:

LOL #100 why in the WORLD do you have Danis on your fantasy team

  106. avatar mLemb says:

Everyone is putting just a bit too much on one 18 year old…who hasn’t played a single NHL game…I mean sure, I hope if we end up picking him he becomes the next face of the NHL and what not, but seriously, we need to ease off it a bit.

For now we just need to sit back and enjoy some hockey. Let the chips fall, Snow is showing he might have a knack for this GM thing. Seriously, after this season I am beginning to have faith in him and our scouts. He’ll do what needs to be done.

  107. avatar Sally Williams says:

    #106….well said!

  108. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Pez, if you look at Danis’ numbers they are pretty sick over the past few months. Few compare except for wins.

  109. avatar Joe says:

Islanders need to start losing and not ruin having the pick!!!!!

  110. avatar Brooks Simpson says:

This team’s fate does not hinge upon a single draft choice, but this entire draft is important.

  111. avatar Pez says:

Joe ill give you his GAA but still…yann?..lol but thats cool

  112. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Pez, I need someone to root for. I drafted Streit and that worked out great. So when Ryan Miller went down I picked up Danis up and it worked out well. Next year KO will be a fantasy stud I think.

  113. avatar ALL ISLANDER FANS REVOLT!!! says:

I thought Weight was a nice guy, lol…I love this team…

  114. avatar KO21 says:

I miss Asham, every time he is about to fight Jackman I cringe because we know what Asham can do…

  115. avatar beaker says:

#106, look at crosby, ovechkin, toews, kane, malkin…one or two superstars can help your team. we already have okposo, bailey looks like he has something going…if we get tavares, it definitely helps. u need to build a franchise around someone

  116. avatar dose says:

comeau and tambellini are really figuring out what kind of player they need to be right now. it’s different than what they thought it’d be.
it was like that for trent hunter too.

  117. avatar Richie66 says:

Witt on the SO????? I thought I saw it all

  118. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Now is you are the Lightning or Avs or Yotes and see that Witt was in the SO what would you think? Hilarious.

  119. avatar jon from nj says:

Was that Gordon saying “We really don’t need that extra point?” I mean, I’m all for getting the #1, but was that obvious?

  120. avatar big jim says:

hope the avs can pull out a win tomm vs anaheim

  121. avatar isle_in_LA says:

I’ll take the effort. The point lost is fine too.

  122. avatar Pritchett54 says:

I have no issue with it because the less points for the isles the better but how could there not be an uproar in the league over this? Witt has 4 goals in the last 4 seasons including none this year and he is our 1st shooter? Laughable.

  123. avatar mLemb says:

Does it have to be this one particular guy though? I agree we need someone who can become a superstar, but Jon Tavares is NOT the end all be all. Crosby, Kane, and Ovie are #1 overall picks…Malkin was a 2nd…oh and Toews…he was a 3rd. So I guess picking 1, 2, or 3 has proven to work. Parise was picked 17th. Getzlaf 19th. Mike Richards 24th. Zetterburg 210. Lidstrom 53rd. Datsyuk 171…I could go on, but you get the point I would hope

  124. avatar Steve S says:

That was brilliant. I hear Joey MacDonald was going to be the fourth shooter.

  125. avatar Justin says:

I can see the headline tomorrow “NHL to investigate Islanders’ Witt in shootout”.

  126. avatar Pritchett54 says:

123, i dont understand what you are trying to say?

  127. avatar AZS says:

Anyone else getting concerned? I mean if I see this kind of play next year I’ll be beyond happy, but getting 3 of 4 points against Detroit and Philly when as a fan you want to get the worst record in the league is scary …they better hope Colorado and Tampa start winning …as much as they’re showing heart getting the #1 or #2 would make this season long losing feel a lot better …

  128. avatar walter says:

danis has to learn to poke check

  129. avatar beaker says:

mLemb, sure #1 isnt always a guarented star, but Tavares is the OHL’s all-time scorer. i know he had more time in the league, but the reason he got that time was because he was granted exceptional player status. he seems to be the real deal, and his numbers back it up.

  130. avatar mLemb says:

We don’t NEED the 1st pick overall. Might it help? Possibly. Is it an absolute must? no. We have plenty of picks this draft, the 2nd or 3rd overall would still be a solid pick and there is always the chance that we could get lucky with a late draft pick. On that note I am interested to see what DiBendetto can do in the AHL next season.

  131. avatar Pritchett54 says:

I think we do NEED the 1st overall pick because the top 2 guys in this draft seem to be much higher rated than anyone else. Tavares is the best prospect to come out of canada since crosby. I am not saying he will be crosby but he appears to be a game changer. I want the first freaking pick and I want taveres. I could live with Hedman but if we drop down to 3, it will be a huge disappointment. I understand it is “possible” to pick a great player later in the draft but in hockey, a huggggeeee majority of the top players in the league are picked very early.

  132. avatar walter says:

if the islanders really wanted to tank they would have pulled the goalie in ot

  133. avatar mLemb says:

3 is very early is it not?

Of the past 5 cup winners, how many had a #1 overall pick playing for them? How many were named Sidney Crosby? Obviously that last one is a little unfair because he came close last year and hasn’t been in the league long, but even with their #1, #2, #3 overall punch last year the Pens still lost to a Red Wings team that didn’t have even a #1 overall if I recall correctly.

  134. avatar dist1ump says:

As a long time dedicated season ticket holder to the Sound Tigers. I am not happy that the Tigers will be playing 2 playoff games in LI. We have to learn this from the broadcast.

It is very odd that they announce this the day after the deadline of our playoff invoices were to be in.

We have not had playoff hockey in 3 seasons and now I have to travel to LI to see it.

  135. avatar Willis says:

So Gordon and Snow are saying they’re on the same page as us fans with that Witt thing, eh?? LOL!

  136. avatar beatlebailey says:

sitting at the game tonight i realized i HATE flyers fans more than rags fans….white tra&^ obnoxious losers…ugh!!!!

  137. avatar Willis says:

Did anyone else notice Rechler go in the box and sit down next to a smaller but very similar (from the side) looking Thompson and have “mini Me” flash through their mind?

  138. avatar Willis says:

    * sorry Wrecker (can’t spell it)

  139. avatar mLemb says:

I am way over limit here…but I have to agree Rechlicz appears to have a mini clone in Nate Thompson

  140. avatar ken says:

i wonder if they will sell out?

  141. avatar Islebethere4u says:

Nice game tonight. Love the effort. As for the mention of picks, fa’s and cap floor, I think that the Isles should definately take Taveres with the first pick should we get it. If we do get it, then go for a fa defenseman jaybo/komisarik/gilroy. If we don’t get the first pick then take Duchene or Hedman. then try to sign a free agent forward like hossa/gaborik/franzen. But thats just me.

  142. avatar Islebethere4u says:

just one more point to make….

Great camera angle on the non call by the ref on the high stick on Jackman! As the camera panned back you see the ref clearly watch as Jackman was nearly blinded by a high stick. the ref wasn’t 10 feet away looking right at it and NO CALL!!!! Before Jackman even passed the ref (screaming for the penalty) blood was streaming down the side of his face and yet inexplicably NO CALL!! Talk about no respect by the refs for the Isles in general, but for a players safety as well!!! Your thought CB??!

  143. avatar Steve says:

Some fans here already trying to justify if Snow does not pick JT at #1. Amazing.
