RECHLICZ, WITT RETURN
Plus: final details on Point Blank Night II

by admin on March 10th, 2009 at 10:53 am

Joel Rechlicz is back with the Islanders. Kurtis MacLean stays. Brendan Witt out of NHL Timeout. Nate Thompson close. Puck Daddy calls Foul on the Islanders fan with the TAVARES jersey (yes, I know about the ad on my blog). Point Blank Night Deux is tonight. Visits from Lighthouse Development Corp. President Michael Picker and royal blue family member Justin Bourne. Wine, food, Islanders-Leafs on the tube. And maybe, just maybe some definitive answers about that Vintage uniform everyone seems to like so much. Details and RSVP.

Revised Comment Guidelines. Please read before posting. Thanks. Goal Song polling continues in next thread.

This is wonderful for Wrecker. He deserves another game in the NHL

  2. avatar Mike from Philly says:

Hopefully I can get a Tavares jersey next season

  3. avatar nightfly says:

Heh, I love that ad. My only fear is that after he’s drafted, some idiot sportscaster is going to make “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel” jokes.

And you know that every time he goes to the box in the Garden those @RT&&^%#!s are playing “More Than a Woman” at him. At least, until the hat tricks start coming.

  4. avatar Coach B says:

Sorry I can’t attend tonight, would have liked to. Still looking forward to the posts on the blog.

  5. avatar crazy joe davola says:

Wyshinski is an excellent hockey writer, and a gosh darn Devil fan. And Chris, if you think you dislike Mr. E, take a look at Greg’s stuff.

I do agree with him though, let’s not count our chickens.

  6. avatar Joey303 says:

Wine..hmm -good thing Im taking the train!! Hope to have fun tonite!!

  7. avatar Jim from St James says:

I am loving the kids stepping up and all, but can we not get a win tonight? Please?

CB see if you can convince Flash to sit out most of the D, and just go with Tomas Pock, solo, and maybe Dunny back in goal? Unlike most other fans, I don’t think the season will be a failure if we don’t get one of the two top picks, but every little bit helps, No?

Besides. it is only a matter of time before Burke in TO starts pulling the goalie halfway through the third period. thats 100 words, I think.

  8. avatar Matt says:

poster #2, i think most ranger fans are hoping that the Islanders miss out on Tavares because the hype that he comes with. they may get on the kid if he ends up wearing the Islander sweater and they may say that “dubinsky is better” just like they are doing with Okposo but we all know they are just jealous.

  9. avatar JP39 says:

I would have loved to have made it tonight, but unfortunately can’t. And now I’m anxious to hear what you have to say about the Vintage jerseys, CB!! Please tell!!! :)

Hope you’re able to have at least one more PB Night this year. Maybe the night of the draft lottery!

  10. avatar puckhead68 says:

Glad to see Rechlicz is back along with Witt. The team can use some tough guys out there. The kids are looking good, but I would like to see Tavares wearing that jersey at draft day this June. If not the team is still going to be fun next year and after

  11. avatar DINO says:

If We Want A Shot At Hedman Or JT We Kinda Gotta Start Losing All Our Games…Those Tampa Owners Know What They Want

  12. avatar Izzy Franchise says:

Whoever the guy was who put Tavares on his Isles Jersey is an A$$.

  13. avatar LooNTooNs says:

HAHA, that guy sits in my section. You know who you are!!!!

  14. avatar JPinVA says:

Duex: Not gonna be able to be JPinNY tonight… sounds like loads of fun. Wish I could have made it.
Wrecker: Why? Loved his game against the Rangers, but unless it’s to do to Hole Wig what he did to slAvery then I don’t see the point. This guy should play 20-25 games a year in the division and mostly against the rangers and flyers.
JerseyFoul: As to daddy’s reference to Mrs. Crosby. Is that an example of naming redundancy or has PA passed legislature to allow same sex marriages?
Witt: I really hope they win, and score at least 3 tonight. I don’t want Brendan to be know as an “over speed” bump.

  15. avatar Eric says:

Look at the ad on the right! It has a Tavares jersey! Chris is supporting the madness LOL

  16. avatar LooNTooNs says:

OK, funny thing is that the jersey WAS his season subscriber GIFT! The Islanders made the Jersey!

  17. avatar Netminder39 says:

Have fun tonight guys. I’m sure it will be a great time.

  18. avatar JPinVA says:

BTW: Did anybody else catch Maloney talking about why he is not “pro fighting” at the GM meetings? “Nystrom hit me so many times on the top of the head I couldn’t touch it for weeks.”
Maloney also is documented as telling the story of why Ranger fans hated the “Potvin Sucks” and “Denis Potvin beats his wife” chants at the garden.
“Those idiots didn’t have to go into the corners with him”.
Of course we all have our feelings about Donny…but at least he’s honest!

  19. avatar Chris TMC says:

Yay, the Wrecker is back! :D

  20. avatar let's Roll says:

Your Opinion will be deleted if it is not inline with Bottas !Dictation not your honest opinion!!

  21. avatar CJCB says:

Yes, Rechlitz back!! About time, hopefully he is here to stay. It makes it a little easier to decide for me if i want to go to a game and spend a couple of hundred dollars. The only problem i still have is you never know with the Islanders whether or not he will dress for the game you drop the $ on. They need to be MORE consistent in playing their Enforcer!! They WILL sell more ticket, i will guarentee that!

  22. avatar Mark says:

Chris I’m sorry I will not be able to attend tonites meeting, would love to be there. A few things I would like to share. Inspite of what a few people have written, those who a times put your site down, and criticsize you, in my opinion, this is the best site out there, you should be commended on the work you do, it’s trully excellent! Next the song, Islander’s, please bring back the Siren. On the uniform’s, make the main uniform’s the uniform’s of the Stanley Cup Era, and make the thirds, the current thirds, for good. Please let me know if, as a “HUGE NY Islander’s fan” how can I help with the Lighthouse Project? And I think the Islander’s are playing as hard as they can, with that said I still want them to finish last, win the lottery, and choose John Tavares. The NY Islander’s so much need this to happen. Have a great time tonite Chris, Thanks, Mark

  23. avatar Mouthwash says:

I sit near the Islander fan with the #91 Tavares jersey. He is a jersey collector and a really nice guy. The Islanders gave free Jerseys to all the season ticket holders – you can pick what style and name you want on it so he decided on taking a risk. It was all good fun. “Why not, it was free” was his comment when I asked on Saturday about it.

  24. avatar d-man says:

the tavares jersey is one of those things that is innocent and funny at first but as soon as a lot of people are talking about it it becomes a bad idea and looks dumb

  25. avatar Jason says:

letsroll, obviously you posted something that had nothing to do with CBs write up or was self serving in that you were trying to make some insane point while hiding behind your fake attempt to talk about the subject. Everyone knows the rules and I have been deleted a few times for not following. I think it’s great that we have these guidelines to follow because I have seen way too many blogs taken over by kids who want to start cyber fights or mental cases who need attention. Kudos to CB for running this blog the right way.

  26. avatar mikey cavs says:

How about trying to find something out in Suffolk County; A place where all of US ISLES fans can go and not have to drive 40 miles and risk getting an XWI!

  27. avatar mikey cavs says:

Did anyone ever think that maybe the guy wearing TAVARES on the back of his ISLES Jersey has a surname of TAVARES? I know my Jersey says MY LAST NAME, not the name of some guy who is on the team for a year or two until he takes off to some other team as a Free Agent!

  28. avatar mrlbem says:

This year’s season ticketholder gift was the 10 Greatest Games DVD. There was no free jersey to my knowledge.

  29. avatar mm30 says:

That is as horrible as all those Lindros Leafs Jerseys right before he was traded …to the Rangers!!!!!

And if your dumb enough to jump the gun and get that jersey at this point…GO VINTAGE!

OR go the way I did…I have a Tavares Knights 3rd jersey and a team canada jersey. I know I have a problem.

BTW—Did anybody here buy a Berard jersey with the #2 back in the day or how about the DiPietro #1 jersey?

  30. avatar Tony says:

This might be off topic, but there is no reason the Lightning should be in the Tavares sweepstakes. They have at least 2 stars in their lineup every night. The Isles dress a minor league lineup and deserve the win-loss record they have.

  31. avatar John says:

That Tavares #91 jersey … he actually is wearing #61 with the London Knights.

  32. avatar LooNTooNs says:

Depending on how much $$ you spend. I was told they offered some people the DVD and a replica Jersey.

  33. avatar mm30 says:

(3)nightfly – thats funny as hell but I bet that went over 98% of our heads.

I never knew of that band until I did a google search on his name.

  34. avatar Isles4cups says:

I’m looking forward to seeing Rechlicz and Witt in the lineup tonight, and hopefully the youngsters are flying tonight. I do also want to say, that I’m tired of all the people that continue to say “we need to lose.” Let the kids play and if they win…Great!

  35. avatar Joe says:

If Rechlicz is here over April break, Ill go to every home game while Im back from college.

  36. avatar Travelchic59 says:

To follow up on 32′s comment, depending on where your season tix are (lower bowl or upper bowl), you were offered a jersey with the DVD as a gift.

  37. avatar Rob says:

31 (JOHN) – Tavares’ number in and has always been 91, when he was traded mid-season from Sarnia to London there was already a player w/ number 91 so he took 61 – and yes season ticket holders have been offered a jersey. Here’s to seeing hundreds of 91 Tavares jerseys at the Coliseum in the years to come..

  38. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

When it comes down to it I wouldnt really worry if Tampa comes in last and we come in second. Tampa needs defense. They will surely take hedman and we will end up with what we need (tavares) anyway. The real worry should be if Atlanta tanks and ends up in last. They have said flat out that they want Tavares.

  39. avatar Blizzard says:

This is professional hockey. Dont tell the kids to lose, they want a roster spot and lets see who can earn it. We might have some gems in the system right now when was Zetterberg drafted? I am so enjoying watching the Islanders right now….the kids are alright! And there is no such thing as Hockey gods……..I hope.

  40. avatar Jim from St James says:

    # 34 – Why? why would you? I’ve watched a lot of hockey, and I comfortable with the kids learning to win next year… I’m sure some of the recently injured would be OK to play, if the team really needed them. Even Sim, it is kind of obvious that they sent him down because they already know what he can do, and the kids should play. I say sit MacAmmond, Hilbert, maybe even Witt, we know what they can do…

  41. avatar JP39 says:

#38 – I see where you are coming from, however, John Tavares is as highly touted as they come, and he is going 1st overall, no questions asked. If Tampa ends up with the #1 pick after the draft lottery and for some reason decides that they don’t want Tavares, then they will trade that pick to a team who does want him. There’s no doubt in my mind. Atlanta is one of those teams that has come out and said that they want him. So if we don’t have that #1 pick, don’t count on Tavares putting on Isles jersey on come draft day.

  42. avatar cgs878 says:

The Islanders are winning too many games. How soon until the Hedman jerseys start appearing? Maybe I’ll look into one o’ those to piss people off even more. What number does he wear?

  43. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

#41 You also have to think of what another team would have to give up to get that number one pick. Essentially Tampa would be giving up a pronger type of defensemen. Which means that the team that trades up would basically have to sell tampa their camp for that pick. The only one with the balls to do that is Burke in TO. So yeah i agree but i dont see any other team trading away several key pieces of their teams for one pick, other than the mad brian burke that is.

  44. avatar Nick G says:

I actually would prefer it if Tavares war 61, or 90…The reason is that either of those two numbers have never been assigned by the Islanders.

  45. avatar nyislanders93 says:

The ideal finish to the season for most Islander fans is having it turn out like this:

    30th- NYI
    29th- TBL
    28th- OTT
    27th- ATL
    26th- doesn’t matter

I bring up this for all people who want Tavares to be a future Islander. Say the Islanders lose the lottery, Tampa and Ottawa are likely to pick Hedman 1st overall, they lack defense badly. All other teams like ATL, COL, PHX, and TOR would likely take Tavares. In the event that the standings turn out the way shown above, the Islanders would have around a 70% chance of getting John Tavares.

  46. avatar lovin lethbridge says:

nyislanders93 – do you really think a team will turn up the opportunity to draft Tavares? knowing Ottawa and Tampa’s need for a defenseman, does not need tehy wont take Tavares. Imagine if you had John Tavares and Stamkos… that makes a Vincent Lecavalier expendable in Tampa.

  47. avatar nyislanders93 says:

I feel that Ottawa and Tampa would almost be forced to fill their huge need for defense with Hedman. They should realize by now that no matter how much offensive weapons they have, their overall game won’t start clicking without defense. Ottawa has Heatley, Spezza, and Alfredsson but still is ending up near the bottom this year. Tampa has Lecavalier, St Louis, Prospal, Malone, and Stampkos and they are also at the bottom. They have to realize that stacking the offense is not working for them.

  48. avatar Darren says:

Hey CB, can you try to take some pictures tonight for all of us who can’t make it. Thanks.

  49. avatar TM says:

The guy with the Tavares jersey looks really silly. Worse than those that got R. Smyth jerseys for a few weeks rental. A waste of money. Isles fans are so desperate to get some good news and hope they go overboard sometimes.

Remember, this is the Isles. With their luck they’ll finish last and not get the first lottery pick as there’s basically a 50-50% chance and Tavares will never be here. At least, wait until it happens for real and Tavares is here!!

  50. avatar nystrom23 says:

Can’t make it away on business hope its a good one….and lets go taveres!!

  51. avatar Richie66 says:

I was think about TB and if they won, I still think they take Tavares (best person available), then try to trade to Atl or Isles (whoever gets #2)for Hedman + pick

  52. avatar jaf10 says:

CB or whoever wants to ansewer, Whats going on with Rahkshani,Gratchev,Katic,Ridderwall and Guthrie next year? are they going to be signed to bridgeport?

  53. avatar Staten Islander says:

The jersey is silly, maybe even wishful thinking if we don’t get him. That said, I think that #91 and #27 should be retired for goring and tonelli.

  54. avatar Coach B says:

If Tampa wins the lottery they take Tavares. They already have Stamkos them trade Lecavalier to Montreal.

  55. avatar jaf10 says:

why dont they retire goring and tonelli’s number?

  56. avatar Patrick says:

While Goring & Tonelli were great players during the dynasty, they were not at the level of the current retired # players

Let’s save that honor for truly great players that were dynamic. Unlike the dumb Rangers who retired Adam Graves’ #9

  57. avatar Moose says:

They should at least be on that Isles HOF banner…CB what is the deal with the Isles HOF, is it really that exclusive that Goring, Tonelli, Turgeon, LaFontaine, or I dunno Kenny Jonnsson can’t be on it…I was trying to think of someone recent
If the isles get the number 2 pick..I would trade the 2nd pick the SJ and maybe next years to draft Tavares, he is the player they desperately need…you dont need to draft a dman with the first pick, you can always get a FA, all the superstar fowards are getting locked up long term and wont be available unless you want to trade the whole farm system.

  58. avatar Jim says:

I agree GORING and TONELLI should have their numbers retired and banners raised with the others. They were just as big a part of the dynasty as the others.

Also I don’t think it would be bad to honor the 74-75 team

  59. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Maybe the guy with the Tavares jersey is a visionary!

  60. avatar Staten Islander says:

the 74-75 team SHOULD be honored. i looked at the boxed set of games that was released and was surprised that the game with the parise goal wasnt included. that was the game that got the ball rolling for them, and made me a fan

  61. avatar dally mac says:

Something to think about: (reason we have to stay in last)

“WINNERS” OF THE PREVIOUS DRAFT LOTTERIES
1995 – Los Angeles (was 7th, moved to 3rd; Ottawa retained 1st overall pick)
    1996 – Ottawa (retained 1st overall pick)
    1997 – Boston (retained 1st overall pick)
    1998 – Tampa Bay (was 3rd, moved to 1st)*
1999 – Chicago (was 8th, moved to 4th; Tampa Bay retained 1st overall pick)
    2000 – NY Islanders (was 5th, moved to 1st)
    2001 – Atlanta (was 3rd, moved to 1st)
    2002 – Florida (was 3rd, moved to 1st)
    2003 – Florida (was 4th, moved to 1st
    2004 – Washington (was 3rd, moved to 1st)
    2005 – Pittsburgh (all 30 teams had a chance at #1)
2006 – St. Louis (retained 1st overall pick)
    2007 – Chicago (was 5th, moved to 1st)
2008 – Tampa Bay (retained 1st overall pick)

*If we finish second last we are bumped out of the top two if someone 3-6 were to win the lottery. Goodbye Hedmad and Tavares.

  62. avatar jon from nj says:

    We need to stop winning…now!

  63. avatar TimQ says:

Tonelli and Goring were very good but they weren’t in the same class as Bossy, Trottier, Potvin or Gillies. I always thought retiring Nystrom’s number was a bit of a stretch but part of it was repayment for his devotion to the team after his retirement. Don’t want to cheapen this like the Rag$ have done over the last couple years. Coming soon Mark Pavelich night at MSG, followed the next night by Esa Tikkanen night.

  64. avatar nhlfan says:

Tonelli scored and assited on some of the biggest goals in Islander history. He deserves to have his number retired.

  65. avatar Staten Islander says:

and goring is supposed to be the final piece of the puzzle that got the ’80 cup team rolling. i don’t want to cheapen it either but those two are worthy, i think we can cut it off there as far as the dynasty players are concerned.

  66. avatar CJCB says:

Rechlitz might be the BEST skating Enforcer i’ve ever seen in an Islander uni. The boy can skate, i’m really Happy with this pick-up by Garth. Now lets try and get the Islanders to play him every night. If this happens i’m totally committed to the Islanders again!!

  67. avatar Seth says:

what was the definitive news regarding the retro unis?
