THE TALE OF DOOFY DUTHIE AND HONEST BOB
If McKenzie doesn’t know what’s up, who does?
11:15 pm - This sums up how Trade Deadline mania is truly show business. You have Canada’s TSN, the Algonquin Round Table of hockey. On one end of the desk, you have Mensa master of ceremonies James Duthie with a knee-slappin’ Cialis joke while ripping on bloggers - as if TSN never gets scoops from bloggers. Duthie also lumps all bloggers together, but don’t worry, James. We don’t do that with broadcasters. You’re no Bob Frickin’ Costas.
And then on the other side, you have Bob McKenzie - one of the most connected and classy people in the business. Bob knows everything and everyone, but unlike Duthie treats everyone with respect. On TSN tonight, Bob was asked by Duthie if there are going to be any blockbuster trades tomorrow.
McKenzie, confident and accomplished enough to never BS, answered, “Too early to tell.” He didn’t mean it to be funny, but it was because it was so real. Bob McKenzie, the most dialed-in man in hockey, saying only 18 hours before the trade deadline that it was too early to tell if there are going to be any blockbusters.
Amen, Bob. And Duth - if a blogger breaks it, don’t forget to give credit.

After watching Philly v. Boston I think the best fit for Guerin is Pitt. They need toughness to get out of the East.
Looking forward to tomorrow…
CB, if I watched Canadian TV all the time I would get mad almost every day. The things they get away with when it comes to a lack of respect…
Anyway, TSN has given you credit and so have a few other sites. Thank you again for working so hard, we all appreciate this forum.
Guerin, Weight to Pitt for J Staal…ummm, PLEASE?!
I’m tired of my TV lying to me.
Even if nothing happens tomorrow, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Snow and this Franchise does not have a plan in place to rebuild. March 4 is just a piece of the overall puzzle. How they finish the season, the off-season, the upcoming draft, etc.
I’ve been constantly refreshing this page and TSN for the last 3 days. I’m done, Snow is probably going to disappoint us once again but then redeem himself during the draft.
i think its a joke that geurin doesn’t play for 2 games and there hasn’t been a trade. Lets not forget that the fans pay to see the stars and the big players. For the islanders to their pull their captain and then to not have made a deal is yet is a joke.
if i paid for a ticket and treked out to that dump of arena i would expect at least that the captain would play.
they better do something right in the next day.
It’s not just the hockey media but all sports media in general have to face the reality that blog’s are here to stay and will only make the landscape more competitive. With the younger generation making their way into the media world, the old school guys (obviously not you CB) are going to have to face the facts. It’s just going to get more and more digital every year to spread to a global reach.
CB
If you are near a TV, check out the SJ-DAL game. Old time hockey alert! Guys throwing massive hits, pavelski tossed for a headbutt, scrums at every whistle….
as for the blogger issue, let’s be honest, there are a couple of guys, one obvious one, who give bloggers a bad name. Anyone who uses their real identity, does research, makes contacts, and puts together well-written material, is not just a blogger, they are a journalist. Just mho.
#1, I agree. I also think Guerin would fit in with the Devils, who don’t need him, and the Bruins, who also don’t need him. So yes, it seems that Pitt is his most likley destination.
The Sharks announcers might be the biggest idiots in the league. I can’t take their broadcasts. Homers times 50.
CB,
You know we love you man… but you gotta thicken the skin a little. We don’t need your BP going up every time some nicklebag lumps you in with the Eklund’s of the world… though that is pretty classless.
What’s up with the “I spike NY” ad?
Any words on why Sim was on waivers? I really don’t understand that one. Do they just want to lose him THAT bad… You can tell in his interviews he really doesn’t want to be part of this team (at least that’s my take on it) But to put him on waivers with a year left, while you’re in last place…and at the salary floor… that’s one helluva kick in the stones.
Can somebody explain this?
Chris I have to tell you, in thirty plus years of being a Canadian hockey fanatic here are my favorite hockey personalities:
1) Ron Maclean (CBC)
2) Chris Botta (NYI Point Blank)
3) Bob McKenzie (TSN and formerly The Hockey News)
James Duthie, although entertaining, has taken a serious hit on my list for this one.
Keep up the incredible work. You are worth seven digits to the Islanders franchise and I hope Mr. Wang is reading your submissions and would agree.
well it looks like Manny will be signed before Billy gets traded
BTW: No Joensuu in Bridgeport tonight. Does that mean that Hunter will be back Thursday and they waived Sim rather than make him a healthy scratch to keep JJ in the lineup.
Still doesn’t make sense.. but I do hope we get to see JJ for the rest of the year.
Patrick (7) - Fans used to buy tickets to watch the TEAM for which they are rooting. In this ESPN age of “superstars” too many folks just want to go see the name rather than the team. The sooner that mentality changes the better off all fans will be.
Next point, CB, agree McKenzie is solid, but don’t let Doofus trouble you. Those of us visiting regularly love what you are doing - we just hope you keep it going for years to come. Your coverage of the Isles is the best of coverage of any team by anyone, MSM, blogger, or other. Thanks for keeping us informed and entertained. Just remember you have a friend in Napa.
#7….First off Guerin is not a star. He is 38. Was he once a star? Yea I guess so, but its not like you missed out on seeing Joe Sakic. I would be more upset about Sakic being hurt and you not being able to see him maybe one last time at the so called ‘dump’ of an arena. Hey if you dont want to be there, you dont have to go. I think Guerin gets traded, I mean how isn’t he? If hes not traded, Its kind of a joke yea. But what if he got hurt these past 2 games? Then the joke would be on us to get nothing for him. Prediction: Guerin gets traded for a #2 or #3 pick. I would take either.
Botta…I hate the fact that they put a downside to bloggers, especially when there are some really great blogs out there. This blog is by far the greatest blog I have ever read and I truly appreciate the work. Your devotion to hockey and the New York Islanders is something I admire tremendously and I hope that you will continue to do this for years to come.
CB,
Duthie is lucky to have a job. He gets paid for the 3rd grade column he wrote today? It was all over the place, he should be locked in a basement.
Keep on putting out good stuff CB, we are behind you
I saw BMR’s post on Duthie. Now your post. Obviously the man needs to be flogged and then salted. Such gall…how atrocious!
#12, #15 JPinVA - My take on your Sim question - Some of the best Vets on the team have mentioned unease with Flash, “the system,” and the way the Vets are treated. If a guy like Billy G. was miffed by his treatment as in a “different clique” then the young guys, can you imagine how a struggling Vet like Sim must feel? Talk about being on the outside. Just my opinion, but I would think Sim probably was well aware that the team has no place for him. The waivers (2nd time) are probably welcome.
Caste thine hay bails! Burn Duthie to tha ground!
sorry cb, but duthie is the man.
mjisles: Stop trying to put out the fire. =P
CB,
Wait, so you mean you differentiate between the content itself and the medium used to deliver the content? That may be a concept too challenging for the Duthies of the world (no matter their medium) to grasp.
Keep it up. It’s been fun to read and fun to watch the mainstreamers chase your leads.
Duthie’s problem is if everyone is reading blogs then no one is watching Cialis commercials on TSN. I’ve never been a big fan of his or a hater. He’s just kind of there to me.
Bob’s OK but he’s become one of those guys that gets too much air time and doesn’t always have enough to say of value. He’d be better in smaller doses. For 10 months of the year I can’t watch TSN for more than 18 minutes without Bob talking about something…
@ Steve-O (#13), I would have said MacLean 5 years ago, but not anymore. I’ve found he’s gotten awfully full of himself and has become as opinionated as Cherry, just in a different way. He was better before his big incident around his contract, when he was more of a ‘just the facts, ma’am” sort of guy. I think the public backlash at him not being renewed went to his head. He’s a funny guy, though, and can tell some great stories.
I think the best TV guy in hockey today, bar none, is Kelly Hrudey. Knows his stuff, picks up on nuance and communicates it, very, very classy and not a loud mouth at all. Breaks down a game really well. Solid guy with a great presence.
McKenzie said today on XM radio that the Guerin situation is “bizarre” and he doesn’t know what’s going on except he doesn’t think it’s to Wash or Boston.
Isles316 (2&11) You are entitled to your opinion, but I doubt that Canadian Television gets away with any more lack of respect than American T.V. And if you are referring to Drew Remenda and Randy Hahn, I disagree with you…they may be bias toward the Sharks, but I think they are pretty good at announcing a hockey game. I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree? Here’s hoping the Isles make a couple of good moves today!
CB, some bloggers give bloggers a bad name. I wouldn’t take it personally and I wouldn’t consider you just a “blogger”. Your credentials give you a targeted audience off the bat, it’s credibility that will sustain/grow your audience and allow you to rise above the generic “blogger” term. We all know that Duthie’s simply referring to the big rumor site. Yes, it’s wrong to group them together but Duthie’s not the only one who does that. You’re 100% right about Bob MacK, he’s almost too level-headed and classy for TV, he’s the best in the business.
