THEY’RE GONNA SLEEP ON IT
Many deals struck late at night, official Wednesday
9:20 pm - Upwards of a dozen trades will be brokered around the league late tonight, but you may not hear about any of them until tomorrow. Every GM in the league is still in his office as I type this, and will stay until at least 1:00 am EST before getting a few hours sleep. As it gets later GMs may all-but-finalize a trade, but they will agree to sleep on it and contact NHL Central Registry in the morning to arrange a conference call for later in the day.
There remains the possibility of an announced Islanders trade late tonight, but most of the action around the league will hit tomorrow. I’m told Bill Guerin will finally, mercifully land somewhere. I really hope so.
Comment Guidelines. Dead serious about enforcing them, making sure all readers have their say and not getting stomped on if you don’t like their opinion. If there isn’t a trade, next post will be about the blog’s plan for coverage tomorrow. Thanks, everyone…CB

Thanks for the info CB. Any thoughts as to where Geurin will end up?
-
hope we make some good trades tommorrow! should be a exciting deadline for the nhl.
-
Back up the truck. Let’s trade EVERYONE! We can’t blow the worst overall record!
-
CB, can you perhaps take us into the intricate details of what happens when an accord is struck between two GMs?
-
For all of humanity, I really hope the Guerin saga comes to a peaceful end.
May Snow have mercy on us all.
-
Couldn’t sleep Sat night…kept hitting refresh. Tonight is going to be killer.
-
I’m with Brian. Hunter, DP and the kids are all that remain. Throw in weight for a conditional pick next year. Atlanta is looking horrible. We need to bring up Fritz and start Mike Dunham.
T-A-V-A-R-E-S! -
as agonizing as this all is, i still love it!
-
I WANT TO LOSE SO BAD…TAVARES ON THE ISLANDERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
they cannot keep guerin anymore.
-
I can’t understand why some of you are adamant about Bill Guerin receiving much, if anything at the deadline. To each their own, and I respect all your opinions, but in my humble opinion: Bill Guerin goes for no more than a 3rd, maybe 2nd. With a 3rd you’ll get a prospect-you’ve-never-head or a 2nd as a stand alone deal. He’s a seasoned veteran, yes, but he does not bring much to the talbe. Add to that his inability to perform in the playoffs, why is anyone inquiring?
-
I’ve to agree with many …I absolutely love this stuff …
Side note ..Atlanta lost and it appears Tampa Bay is on it’s way to a loss …as exciting as all of this is hopefully the Isles will hit a rough patch because we need that #1 (or minimum #2) ….looking forward to your updates CB …
-
interesting, but second game in a recent amount that washington got spanked so maybe ted leondis sees there needing to be a change
-
Please let the Guerin issue be euthenized tonight. Thanks again Cap’n Bill and good luck.
-
Alright CB, I have a rant about Strickland saying (XM 430p mountain time)that teams should be fined for holding players out before the trade deadline. Are you friggin kidding me? Teams like the Islanders need to do what’s right for the Islanders. So the play Billy G, he gets hurt like Dougie Weight did and they get squat in return???
Just what we all need is another hack bagging on the Isles. I’m getting sick of it…
Thanks for your honesty and insight CB. I really appreciate it.

Everyone,
I know this has been said ad nauseum (sp) since this all started, but this Guerin thing isn’t a “saga” (#6), and I don’t know if “mercilessly” is the best choice of words, CB. The Islanders have been very professional about this. They haven’t declared him all but traded. They haven’t done anything except protect an asset they’ve been seriously shopping – that’s something you do with one or two games left till the deadline, but not 10. For once, the Isles have done nothing wrong, and I’m proud of Snow for upholding the integrity of a franchise that has been sorely lacking any for quite some time.
CB had initially suggested that only Lou Lam and the Devils had the organizational integrity and rigor to be able to pull something like this off and keep it a secret for so long. I think Garth has done a fabulous job here, and I’m sure he’ll do us proud in the next 24 hrs… -
pile up the picks spects and young players snowy
-
It really is like Christmas eve.
-
I think the worst part about this whole deal is because of the way Gordon treated him at the end, there is no option for him to come back next year, and this is one guy I though initially we could trade and resign for one more year.
I think he might be worth a 2nd rounder from a top team looking for that one piece to help them (ie Boston). The idea of him and Weight getting moved in the same deal is interesting, curious to know what that’s worth.
Guerin was a good Islander, I hope he goes somewhere he can win the cup (just not the Rangers please)
-
Bill WILL bring a second, if he doesn’t I’ll be shocked. Wouldn’t be surprised if we got a prospect(b) as well. I don’t think any of us can gauge to accurately what GM’s are willing to pay until we see some trades. As long as we get something for him, its Garth’s job to maximize the return. Guerin is a vet with some cup experience, been a captain, and can pot a few. Feel like I’m selling him to you guys!!! LOL!
-
I just want to win 1 more Thursday night. Keep the Strangers from making playoff. After tonight they will sitting 1 point out of the eighth spot. Then we can lose the rest.
-
@ Akeem #17
AMEN! I have been trying to say this for days now.
-
I agree isles316…trade deadlione and draft day are what we have to live for this year. That and any good lighthouse news.
-
Pittsburgh seems like the logical choice for Guerin to me. They waived Satan to clear extra cap room. They are the defending Eastern Conference champions and in danger of missing the playoffs altogether, they seem the most desperate to me.
The only question is if Snow would take quality or quantity.
He could send one player to a team and acquire lower round picks or he could package players together and acquire higher picks and/or prospects.
The next 17 hours should be fun!
-
17-couldn’t agree more. I can’t wait for tomorrow, this is going to be a big day for this franchise to get things heading in the direction we so deerately need it to. I will miss watching the Capt. and some of the others who I expect will be moved but if that is what it takes to get us back to an organization to be admired then let’s go Garth..make us proud.
-
“…Start Mike Dunham.” lmao!!
Yeah, I hope for ours and Guerin’s sake we can move him. I’d like to keep Hunter, he’s a good leader, can score some goals, adds a physical presence, and is one of the few guys on the team with size.
I am very frustrated though, because I have class all day tomorrow, so I’m going to have to get one of my buddies to update me with texts.
-
Who agrees that Jack Capuano should get some sort of recognition in the AHL? Every player that came up here contributed and fit right in and didn’t look out of place. Just about every AHL prospect has developed and gotten better it seems and that to me is a big success story of this season.
-
I think Guerin and Martinek will be dealt. I’m hoping Weight and Hilbert go too. I’m half and half on Witt.
-
Big Z (29),
What makes you think Guerin will be dealt??? -
isles316…..EXCELLENT POINT…REALLY!
-
Hey did you see that Hossa–who happens to be a RW–was just taken off the ice…looks real bad. Hope he is ok…but may increase Bill G’s value…
-
Akeem and Michael Schurlein, you think the way GoGo handled the press and what he said was professional? What if we aren’t able to trade him then what? Gordon’s backpeddling in the paper yesterday was in obvious fear (I love when he does that!) that Guerin would not be traded. I know I’m Mr. Negative but don’t call the parade in just yet. A lot of people have questioned this whole thing including CB in one of his 100 blogs the last few days.
-
I don’t see much sleeping going on tonight. Too much thinking going on for these GM’s.
I can see Snowy waking up in a cold sweat. Dreaming of somebody backing out of a deal.
As stressful as it is for the GM’s.. what a dream job.
-
I think anything for Geurin will be a good move, considering he really did not have any plans on removing his no-trade-clause up until a few days ago.
Tomorrow should be interesting, in terms of how many picks we could get.
-
Witt or Hunter gets my vote for the “C”
-
When you pull a guy like guerin off the ice like that, yes, you are protecting him from injury, but you are also backing yourself into a corner where you MUST deal him. No matter what gordon says, there is no way they can bring guerin back at this point. Other teams have to know this.
-
hey #32 really has a good point!!
-
Exactly Shoe, which in turn may drive down his value!
-
why can’t you bring him back?
-
Good point Shoe. It seems that a deal was in place for Guerin and it fell through. But you are right, his value may be down because of all of this.
-
Logans thinks guerin is going to the penguins
-
Shoe/Matt: disagree. The entire league knows Islanders were trying to move Guerin. If there is more than one team interested in him, it creates competition and Islanders will get fair value. Anyone who needs an experienced RW for playoff push isn’t going to play hardball. They need Guerin more than the Islanders need to get ride of him.
-
@ Matt #33
No question Gordon likely said some stuff under pressure he shouldn’t have – but let’s get real for a minute, this is a professional sports team and personalities aren’t always going to mesh 100%.
I don’t know, to me he really hasn’t done anything so horrible that would make Guerin sink his head and no play out the season with as much pride as he can.
-
Guerin doesnt want to go West…IT WONT HAPPEN, regardless of what detroit wants or what happens to hossa
-
Guerin, Martinick, hilbrt to pens for Malkin…lol
-
Matt and Shoe,
In hindsight, I’m quite certain there isn’t a deal that Garth would have had had he kept Guerin in the lineup that he now doesn’t because he pulled him out. Remember, we’re not the desperate ones here – it’s the teams on the playoff bubble looking for that final piece to get them in, THEY’RE the ones with the sense of urgency. Garth waiting it out could only help, and will only drive up the price.
If I’m an opposing GM, I’m NOT thinking there’s no way Snow would put Guerin back in the lineup, as Matt and Shoe suggest. Who cares if he comes back? He’ll play 20 more games here, then leave. Point is, Garth taking him out, even Gordon talking to the papers the way he did, did nothing in terms of Garth’s leverage. -
Logan has no idea. He saw that Satan was waived and is taking a guess. Shouldn’t logan be trying to dig up a controversy where there is none?
-
#28 – Jack Capuano will have his time with the big club. Gordon for the rebuild ( 3 more seasons – the last season failing for the second yr in a row in the 2nd round- by that time not acceptable). Jack replaces him and wins the cup in 2012.
-
well Vukota that really is newsday, alls they want to do is make controversy with there articles, whether its the islanders, or volunteer firemen, school teachers or politicians, newsday is always trying to take someone down
-
This my last post damn I already ran out! Post #44 you are right personalities don’t always mesh I don’t know what that has to do with it being a professional sports team but BG is our Captain so it could have been handled better. Going public before the guy is traded is to me brainless which I am not shocked coming from Gordon. Jimmy Mac Guerin could come back but do you really want him to after Gordo said what he did. To me it wouldn’t be overly wise. Just my two cents.
-
Guerin and radek
For
J. Stall and 4th rd pick
What you think
-
The Islanders signed/resigned goalie Nathan Lawson either today or tonight. That was the news in Bridgeport tonight at the game.
-
yann danis on his way out maybe
-
Interesting BSTFAN #53, anyone think that might mean bye bye MacDonald?
-
Yea I think so to
-
Danis is staying, probably McD going then
-
I agree wuth 56 and 57, Danis has been a great story of late and hopefully can keep it up
-
You all have a right to your own opinion, but it breaks my heart when I read comments from Islander fans hoping that we lose and come in last place for the sake of the first draft pick. I know it may be what is best for the organization, but I feel that as fans we should want the team to win as much as possible. Look at DP. He was a first round pick and what has he really done for us thus far?
The Islanders will have a great pick no matter what, but please let us try to support the team for the rest of this season, and not route for them to lose.
-
dmen (25)
I think last year was the quantity draft. This year, while we have quantity, I think you’ll see that packaged for quality. Or so I hope.
-
Rob (52), I seriously think you need to relook at that trade proposal and think long and hard about it.
Not disrespect but I can’t believe some of the ridiculous trade proposals that people actually post. If you think this one is far off from a Richard Park for Sidney Crosby (because they both skate fast), you’re wrong.
Ludicrous, is the answer.
-
Snow has the 1st round pick he needed; if he is patient and smart he could get an additional #1, if he gets very LUCKY. And that would be a great thing. If he only gets the 2nd round pick? So be it. I personally think all fans will be a little surprised come tomorrow!
-
I agree Matt S. When a team rebuilds you want to see the kids succeed. When they are improving and the team is winning, that means they are heading in the right direction. If the kids are not winning or at least being competitive, the rebuild is headed in the wrong direction.
Hopefully after tomorrow there will be more things all Isles fans cheer about. I would love to see Snow pull off a blockbuster, but don’t think it will happen. The important days for the Isles are draft day and July 1. They have the draft picks, and the cap space. Lets hope they do it right this time!!! -
CJ ,
That offer is not as bad as park for sid the kid.
I was just throwing it out there
Now cj stop faking that you are an isles fan and go back into your hole
-
Matt(59)completely understandable where you are coming from, but with DP, we should have kept Luongo and taken Heatley or Gaborik number 1 overall. But that is the past and has been harped on many times here…..Now the franchise can correct that mistake and get either a sniper or a cornerstone at the blue line, while hopefully DP becomes the NHL netminder he has the talent to become. This franchise needs the number one plus the lighthouse in order to not only become relevant again, but survive. As a fan and a season ticket holder, I root my butt off for them each and every game, but at the same time I am content to see improvement as well as see the team finish at the bottom of the standings.
-
Matt:
We all want our team to do well and perform well. We dont want them tanking on purpose. We want our guys to continue developing. But, we will be much better off with the 1st or 2nd overall pick. It doesnt matter what our picks from the past have done, all that matters is what we do with this pick this year.
-
I love Ray – he is my idol. He taught me the ways of man love and for that I am forever indebted to him and his rogue cop antics.
-
Just because the Islanders lose playing the kids doesn’t mean program is moving in wrong direction. With any other team most of our prospects would be playing in AHL right now. Instead they are gaining valuable NHL experience. Since the Islanders shifted gears mid-year (youth movement), we should expect losses. I agree with Gordon, Wins are great, but what is important now is providing experience and finding out who your future stars are.
-
Guy’s, the Isles will not pull off a blockbuster because we don’t have the players on our side to make a blockbuster trade! Unless we trade our 1, we are not bringing back a super player!! The thing I think we tend to forget is that their are 30 teams in this league! There are a helluva a lot of names being talked about, and you gotta believe with some of the names that are being proposed here, such as Stall, there would be a whole lot of interest from playoff bound teams, and we would be out bid!!We don’t have the players that people are willing to break the bank to get! Guerin has to go now, but I would be surprised if we get more than a young player or a late 2 back!
-
Plus our guys have been competitive in most games. They have shown they can compete with almost any team. And with more experience and growth we will be able to compete for a good playoff spot for the next couple of years.
Wins and losses arent important for a team with no hope for Lord Stanley. What is important is experience and growth.
-
From Snow’s standpoint, I’m thinking this time of year is much harder on him as a GM than it was as a player. So many decisions to make. So many careers at stake. I can’t wait till it’s all over.
-
StevieL (69) That is true, but cap space is the other issue. We have a bunch, so that gives us the abiiity to bring back a commodity if we can pry it away for the right price. Also the trade partner may need to free up some space, so we can provide relief. If they feel Guerin, or a Weight-Guerin combo is what will propel them, maybe we can land a decent player back while saving the trade partner some room on the cap side.
-
I like this comment section better then islanders mania. That forum annoyed me
I like talking to die hard isles fans like myself
-
How about doug weight and martinek for cam barker. I think that would be a great trade.
-
Welcome Rob! Best Hockey site in the country, right here. BTW, I was talking to a friend of mine who’s a die hard Leafs fan from T-to, and he told me people up there have heard of this blog, and that it has a great reputation. Go CB.
-
JT, valid point! But for the right player, cap space is made and players are moved! Ex, Satan today. Our Cap space does help quite a bit, but I think it will be put to better use with the UFA’s this summer! ( at least I hope!)
-
Hopefully its the last time I have to see Billy Guerins shot go wide and/or over the net and off the boards!!! Yessss!
-
how about guerin to the pens for a 2nd and Godard?
-
That’s great news how this site is gaining popularity
I always check the site but now I comment
Ya barker is 22 yr stud would love to get him
-
Tomorrow at 5:30 PM, when all the trades are complete and processed entirely, I think something will surprise us. Garth Snow has not ceased to surprise us throughout his tenure thus far, and I think we will be surprised tomorrow. I am feeling that we will be taking back salary at some point tomorrow in order to grab a great prospect or a high number one pick. Only time will tell what happens, but it’s a tough day on Snow. He will do a great job, I have confidence in him.
-
a few teams are up against the cap. the isles could provide relief for these teams. eat a short term bad deal(09-10), if a high level pick comes with it.
i dont understand waiving sim to save a million for (09-10), unless hes a wrong fit and they are doing the right thing?
its not my money, but weight, guerin and crummie off the payroll clears over 1/3 this seasons payroll.
getting high end free agents here is nearly impossible. but the mid level defensemen we grabbed from the habs worked out pretty well. hows redden these days? give the GM some credit, and lets see what happens.
our sixth round pick is a scoring machine. hes a sixth round pick for a reason, but you never know. -
yeah we will see
So what you think of Jesse j ??
-
hey guys I have heard AEG is trying to buy the Isles and move them to KC.
This guy in KC wont shut the hell up about it, apparently its all over the news and papers there.
-
So while we talk about building for the future, our franchise may not even have one.
-
Sim being waived did surprise me. There has to be more there, because he is playing like Jon Sim did before he got hurt and is very useful. Weird.
-
Garth Snow has stated over and over again that he will not eat a contract unless the team doing the dealing is willing to give a No. 1 pick!
Ahh Botta, help us go to sleep! Post something, anything that will help me get to bed! Ha! I keep refreshing thinking I”ll see something go down. I’m so naive.
-
any links james?
-
Cam Barker 22 year old d man wiht size and talent. Make it happen this guy could be a solid D man for the Isles.
-
kansascity.com from what I heard
-
I know im over my limit but dont listen to James, it is not in the papers there and he is stirring the pot.
-
James wang said thats the last possibility, KC can say all they want, there not getting the Isles, id be more worried if i was a coyotes fan
-
StevieL I agree with that too! Boy do I hope we offer Camalleri a nice contract this summer, and get him on board, but thats a long shot…..
-
I believe that Newsday reported in late February that the Islanders are contractually obligated to play in the Coliseum until 2015. Hopefully by then the Lighthouse will be built and soon after that Lord Stanley will be paraded down Hempstead Tpke. (If not before then.)
-
HHHHmmmmm several websites are reporting Snow is shopping Botta. That guy is worth at least a first round pick.
I don’t know what will happen. What we do know is Snow is skilled at not showing his hand or telegraphing his moves. We’ve all seen reports on teams the Isles are talking to and probably we’ll end up making a deal with at least one team that came out of no where.
While people knew Comrie was on the block and Botta speculated Camps was the package deal to Ott or even that Snow was close to making a move was all kept secret.
Here is who I think will go: Guerin, Weight, Witt, Tambelleni, McAmmond, Martinek, Geravis and Hilbert.
I also think we’ll be shocked by one of the players the Isles move. Someone we weren’t expecting.
I think Snow will make a move that is larger then some were expecting.
By tomorrow night we’ll all be scrambling to figure out what the roster looks like.
Names I would be thrilled to see be Islanders tomorrow: Byfugelen, Bieksa, O’Bryne (a few others from Montreal), Alzner, Seabrook, Kesler, Hartnell,Methot, Petrecki etc.
Teams I’d like to deal with Montreal, Ana, Sj, LA, Bos, Washington, Chi, Van.
I do believe we’ll see a lot of change tomorrow. Whether that means lots of trades or only a few where the Isles players are packaged.
I think Snow will get back at least one high quality young veteran who’ll be a key to the rebuild. This will be done because his other team needs to free up salary for other moves.
I think we’ll do a deal with Det. I hope I’ll be more productive at work tomorrow then I was today but am not counting on it.
The only negative that could happen is if Snow doesn’t do much.
GO Isles!
-
I have a feeling alot of people around here are going to be disappointed tomorrow night. The one, maybe and I mean MAYBE, two trades they make aren’t going to really bring in anything of that much significance, unless you consider a 2nd or 3rd round pick significant.
-
Also heard Jake Skille could be had for the right price from the Hawks. Again this is a young RW 21 years old that would be on this team for the long term. We have picks and guys to make a deal. We don’t always have to sell off guys at the deadline no reason the Isles can’t get a younger guy for the future.
-
Im not stirring the pot, I am telling you what I was told. I figured it was a bunch of bull to begin with
Just thought you would like to know lol
-
I think Sim was waived for this year’s team to get more ice time and bring up more prospects. Building a core of guys who are staying is Gordon’s focus. Sim is going to be benched soon when the next guy comes back and he still has another year on his contract. Why keep him around to sit in the stands?
Sim has shown that he is almost back to his own form, let someone grab him up free and clear. He could be a “piece” someone is looking for and no one is going to give Garth any assets for him.
-
He says he has a link, he gave me that one, I dont see anything on there
-
Interesting the Isles kept Josenuu on LI. That means they are planning on playing him again tomorrow which give some sort of indication to what they are trying to do tomorrow. He deserves to play another game.
Has the weather cleared up on LI so if the Isles acquire players they will be able to get there in time for the game on Thursday?
-
Time to rest up! For Isle fans this season has boiled down to tomorrow and draft day in June!
” Our stockings are hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Garth will soon be there”
And to all a Good Night! -
Ya I think 2 trades is right no more than that
We get some picks and maybe a prospect
Who’s going to collisium on draft night for that party we gonna have
I’ll be there
-
sim—
maybe the GM has a budget( the league min for payroll) and clearing off sim creates space to add that bad deal. the habs, flyers, pens and bruins aren’t flush with cap space. if being short term parking for a bad contract wreck gets us a high value pick, pull them in.
if the habs have the parts for the panthers, the isles eating the rest of kovalevs 2009 contract gets them the cap space they need to put b-meister on the roster. pens, you want guerin? we will take satans bad contract, high end pick(s)to wash it down. -
Has anyone realized that it might be best for the Isles not to have Billy Guerin? They have won both of their games since then, and they have been looking more energized as a team, all because they don’t need to think about how the captain thinks about their play!!!
-
After tomorrow the next big day for Isles fans is April 13th the night they have the lottery for the draft. I’ll be in St. Lucia hopefully I get some info on what happened that night. They gotta have ESPN or Versus in St. Lucia right?
-
James:
Islanders are not going anywhere until the Lighthouse project is dead. That is worth a heck of a lot more to Wang than what he can get for the isles.
AEG can ask and offer all they want. It aint happening anytime soon.
-
I agree Jason
-
James, no swearing on the best hockey site in the country…
-
sorry my bad lol
-
Oh well I guess the possibility of a trade annoucement for the Isles is gone for tonight. Watch I go to sleep and wake up they pulled sometype of deal off.
-
akeem and riversidejoe
By pulling guerin, you are losing some leverage because your trade partners know that you are extremely motivated to sell. If they offer you something at 2 pm, they know you are likely going to accept whatever you can get because it is very difficult to bring a veteran back after sending them home to wait for a deal.
Then, the story about guerin and gordon not getting along gets out, and the isles are really in a must-sell position.
-
I’m glad Tambo scored and got an assist
I might be I’m the minority here but I think he still can do something in NHL
Just look at that shot and he has speed …. Put him with frans and okposo .. See what he can do there
-
Shoe,
My response to that is/was, twofold:
1. Isles aren’t in must sell mode as much as other teams are in must buy mode. They’re the desperate ones, not us. They’re the ones who are going to reach, not us.
2. Other teams won’t think Snow won’t bring Guerin back – his career with the Isles would be 20 more games, it’s not like he’ll be a long term problem. It’s not like keeping him in the lineup would have convinced others that Snow was open to keeping Guerin any more than he is now.
Isles did the right thing….

Good News…
