BERGENHEIM, MacDONALD INJURED

Sean Bergenheim (groin) and Joey MacDonald (knee) will not be with the team when they play in Montreal tomorrow night. Both have returned to Long Island for observation and there is no timetable for their return. Peter Mannino has been recalled from Bridgeport.

Run with Mannino the rest of the way. Well at least 3 or 4 starts anyway. Tampa better win or get points tonight. Tampa in over time…the ultimate for tonight.

  2. 2 Staten Islander

I agree with dally. Let Mannino play till they get the 10 point lead for last back

  3. 3 JB

    Jesus…

  4. 4 mapisles2025

I also agree. Please start him as much as possible.

  5. 5 thepolishprince

Damn. Just when Bergie is playing his best hockey he gets hurt. Hope it’s not serious. Get well soon Sean!
As far as Joey Mac - meh - I’d rather have Danis continue to earn the right to back up “Da-Knee” DiPietro next year.

  6. 6 Jason

This season has simply been unbelievably drenched with injuries. It seems to happen on a weekly basis.

Whats the prognosis on a Weight and Park return? Sutton?

  7. 7 UIF

Hope it’s nothing serious for either and they can get back in action soon…Bergy for his march to 20, and JMac so he can continue his audition - either for this team or another.

  8. 8 Don't Mind the Haters

As much as I enjoy our team playing well as of late, we have to remember that the stars have all aligned for the NYI to finish last this year in order for us to draft a Super Star. We must follow through… It’s our destiny…

Just like it’s the Rags destiny to spend every available penny and still miss the playoffs.

  9. 9 Ari from Long Island

Like it was said before, hope tampa wins in overtime today! Also, lets play Mannino in some games!! We need to lose games!

  10. 10 Brian

Let Manino play out the string…at least until we have a double digit points lead for last overall.

  11. 11 Stephen McEwan

well they have back to back games against carolina and ottowa next week so im sure he’ll get one of those starts. Other then that you know that Gordon is gonna run with Danis for the most part he’s earned it.

  12. 12 7th Woman

And Bridgeport has been winning. This can’t be good for them.

  13. 13 nystrom23

i agree with everyone let mannino get starts….that does stink about bergy since hes been comin around

  14. 14 Billy-no-not-Jaffe

Bergie has been very productive and now this. I think the kid turned the corner, what a set-back.
Groin problems can become chronic……….remeber MasterBates?

  15. 15 Angelica

    This is of the suck…

  16. 16 PKruse

Play Mannino the rest of the way……if we play danis we can kiss both jt and hedman goodbye

  17. 17 Pete M

Something tells me Bergenheim is done for the year. If its bad enough to send him home it means they expect him to miss at least the 5 games on this road trip, which ends on the 21st. At that point there will be less than 3 weeks left to the season (10 more games). If its that bad there’s no reason to rush him.

  18. 18 Pat

In all seriousness - we should play Mannino in a couple of games soon…..maybe one of the back to back games this wknd. An opportunity to see what he has.

Tampa is playing 4th string goalies - right?

  19. 19 JPinVA

Injuries are never GOOD, but if they aren’t serious shutting them both down might not be the worst thing that could happen to a team trying to get a guarenteed #2 pick.
So who’s on 95 tonight… JJ? Sim? Smith?
TB in OT, and CAR in reg… The perfect season ends with the Rangers in 9th and us in 30th(better by winning lottery, but I can’t ask for that much).

  20. 20 Will C

CALL UP WADE FLAHERTY AND DANNY PLANTE! We need some separation from Tampa, although I am fond of Duchene, reminds me of SAKIC….

  21. 21 C.J.

    Mannino please.

  22. 22 Bryan

Hey… I used to be a huge Dan Plante fan.

  23. 23 Steve K.

Tampa is throwing games. You dont have Vinny and Marty and be in last place. It just doesnt happen.

  24. 24 Jim M

Does anyone else feel by adding Tav or Hedman, with a healthy DP, and adding 1 or 2 significant UFA this offseason this team has some good playoff potential..I really like how the team is gelling together right now and lets not forget this is not a team that has been in the dumps for 5 consecutive seasons. It has been up and down since 01′ and we are only two seasons removed from that Sabres series..granted that was a completely different team but I really like the direction we are heading right now

  25. 25 Staten Islander

I love how the kids are playing, and I am praying that they get Tavaras, I still think that even with a healthy DP and the right free agents, a playoff run next year would depend on how the current crop of kids play in year 2 of the latest rebuild. That said, I also feel that they are headed in the right direction and that PERHAPS, our long nightmare may be coming to an end.

  26. 26 Will C

I see 20+ goals from Bergy and KO, and a solid 15-20 from Blake, and 10-15 for Bailey. Add a good 20 for Tavares and Hunter and we have a balanced couple of lines, if wwe add a FA or two, who knows?

  27. 27 The PolishPrince

Jim M - Adding a healthy DP alone makes this markedly better team. I fear however that Ricks’ days of being 100% are already behind him. I really really hope I’m completely wrong on that ’cause I like DiPietro alot.
I don’t see the Isle’s being serious contenders for any significant free agents this year. There are still too many pieces missing to sign that guy to put you over the top. I will be one happy camper if they manage to sign say a Komisarik though.
As for the draft, best player available for me please be it Tavares, Hedman or whoever. I trust the scouting staff has done a heck of a lot more homework in that area than I have !

  28. 28 Isle_in_LA

TB game going into OT. Nice!

  29. 29 The PolishPrince

One last thing - I know CB wrote off blaming the strength and conditioning staff for the rash of injuries the past two seasons but this is crazy. Has any team come even close to missing as many man games due to injury as the Isles the last two years? Maybe there is a little more to it than bad luck and the fact that the Islanders are Murphy’s Law on Ice?

  30. 30 dally mac

Tampa has a point gone into OT.

  31. 31 JayK

    But they lost in OT.

  32. 32 dally mac

Mike Fisher scores in OT and Carrie Underwood is all teeth. Our deficit is four now. Some breathing room….five would have been better.

  33. 33 nyislanders93

Agreed The PolishPrince. Their injuries turn out to be freak accidents like the recent ones of Hunter and now Bergenheim. This is not bad luck anymore. This is now the 2nd season where the Islanders are easily the team with the most man games lost due to injury. Someone needs to be fired.

  34. 34 jonw

Just finished going over the RFA list for the 09 season. There are some pretty big names. That being said I think tapping into the RFA market is better suited for teams that are 1 maybe 2 players away from being solid cup contenders. That makes the Islanders who have plenty of cap space and 5 picks in the first 2 rounds a possible destination for some top teir players.I feel the Isles will make a bigger splash this off season via trade then FA signings

  35. 35 Chris TMC

Come on everyone, the Islanders are not actually going to play Peter Mannino the rest of the way. If Danis is healthy, Id be surprised if he gets more than 1 or 2 starts, tops.

  36. 36 Chris TMC

nyislanders93 (33): Thing is, you cannot fire someone because of broken ankles and the like… how can you really blame those kinds of things on someone? You can be the best-conditioned athlete in the world and still break your ankle, ribs, leg, etc.

  37. 37 Shawn

That really stinks I personally love Bergy and hes been playing well as well. As for everyone who wanted ot intentionally tank a season for a draft pick, you need to stop. You thinks its cool the Penguins intentionally lost games to get Lemieux? And did i again to get Crosby? I’ll take a few more years or bad hockey rather then have my franchise go down to THAT level. I would like to see Mannino a few times but to say “START MANNINOOR WELL LOSE THE 1ST DRAFT PICK AND NOT BE THE WORST TEAM OF THE YEAR!!!” is childish.

  38. 38 Jason

    I agree with Post 15…

    “This is of the suck”

  39. 39 Robbo

Mannino has earned a couple of starts thanks to his performance in Bridgeport. I’d love to see the kid go on a huge run to end off the season like some of the other goalies throughout the league who have done the “call-up shutout” thing. I agree with Shawn (37), play with passion not with a draft pick in mind.

  40. 40 The PolishPrince

Conditioning doesn’t prevent broken bones but strains are a different story. Seems like the team has had a whole lot of those the last couple years. Anyway, that’s four for me so good night all!

  41. 41 goislesgo105

This season better end soon! At the rate that our players are getting injured we might not have enough to field a team!! lol

  42. 42 coral springs isle fan

I can’t say I am let down about Joey’s injury. He continues to give up the soft goals and the team feeds off of that. Also, look at teams records when they score the first goal. It is hard for the team to get the energy to play in front of him as hard. You also get less steals in terms of wins. Let’s face it, your goaltender is going to steal you some wins. Danis has kept us in games and has had long stretches of no goals against. Teams rally around that and play harder for a gut that is giving 110% with no mistakes. I find it funny that the team seems to be playing much faster and harder since Bill Guerin left. It seems as if guys like Okposo and Bergenheim have seized leadership rolls and all the guys are rallying around them and are playing with just as much heart.

  43. 43 Brian from Massapequa

I really hope Bergie is not out for long. The kid has been on fire recently. I was hoping to see 50/50 time between Danis and JMac the rest of the way. Now i say insert Mannino. We may get outbid on both of the former. Mannino might be the backup (or #3) next year so we might as well peak.

Thanks to CB for a great night. Thanks also to James, Kelly and 318J1 for great conversation and a good time (and for watching my seat taboot).

  44. 44 C.J.

Mannino needs to play as we need to drop some games in a row.

Besides, it gives the Isles an opportunity to gauge him at the NHL level. ;)

  45. 45 Moose

    MANNI-NO.

Whose the Goalie in the Bridge now? A Shooter Tutor?

  46. 46 Pete DeBenedetto

And in a related story — Owner Charles Wang was injured earlier today in a scuffle with TOH’s Kate Murry. Asper league policy the Islanders would only report that it was a lower body injury. Wang is being evaluated back in New York. On an emergency basis, the Islanders have called up Chris Botta to own the team. No word on Wnag’s return as of tonight.

  47. 47 WarrenG

I agree we will be seeing Danis more, and we should, he deserves it. I hope he is the backup next year. NO offense to McD because he held the fort down terrifically in the beginning of the season, but we still ended up losing. Danis has actually won more games lately and the team seems to be rallying around him. Its gonna be a tough decision for Garth this summer.

  48. 48 puckhead68

yeah lets not tank, the way TB is right now. They have far to many good players, even though they are not getting good goaltending. To bad for bergie, he was really doing awesome. Joey Mac had a good run early on but not after he came back from his short time injury. Hey I checked out the last 11 years of draft lottery results, in those 11 years only twice have the worst teams held onto the top pick

  49. 49 Akeem

Keep in mind, there is still a better chance that the worst team DOES NOT get the first pick than them getting it. 48 percent chance…

  50. 50 jonw

Just to follow up on some of the last few comments. You have to consider that there are GM’s that might over pay heavily***cough Burke cough*** for the chance to draft either Tavares or Headman.

  51. 51 Old Lobsterboy

Burke will not “overpay” enough for Tavares or Hedman. Sorry, the first or second pick is not for sale. What you reference is the silliness often found on HF boards, along with 6 way deals and other zany concepts.

  52. 52 Johnny Islander

    Another groin strain…? Yea, that’s a shocker.

I love when people like to point out the few broken bone injuries that have happened when countering those who suggest there may be an issue with strength and conditioning.

What they fail to mention that if you took all the Isles man-games lost to groin injuries alone it would be more than some other teams total. If you add in the other various “strains” “soreness” “swelling” and various other “upper and lower body” ailments, it really is just a bad joke at this point.

  53. 53 Chris TMC

puckhead68 (47): You are mistaken. According to nhlscap, in the last 11 years it was actually four of them where the worst team from the season before kept the 1st overall pick- not two. (99,05,06,08). And the three years before that (95,96,97) the worst team the season before also kept the 1st overall pick. So, that means it is 7 out of the last 14 drafts where the worst overall team from the season before kept the 1st overall pick in the following draft.

  54. 54 Chris TMC

Oops! That was post (48), sorry.

BTW Johnny Islander (52): if someone suggests there may be an issue with strength and conditioning, I would not disagree with that. But when people proclaim that is definitely the problem and start calling for peoples heads and demanding people are fired from their jobs, well- that is not suggesting there may be an issue, that is making a bold and relatively unfounded presumption. Thats how I see it anyway.

  55. 55 puckhead68

my mistake, but I still do understand people thinking we should tank it from here on out to get the last place finish. Not very good odds of getting that top pick

  56. 56 Johnny Islander

I wonder how many years of leading the NHL in man games lost, does it take before you can say strength and conditioning is definitely a problem? I’m assuming 2 isn’t enough?

    shhhh… remember the guidelines Johnny

    ok, Good night

  57. 57 jonw

Sorry #51 I have to disagree.I am not in the heads of the Gm’s. I can’t say for certain what a gm will or will not do.I was merely stating that it’s something you have to take into considration. It’s not something too far fetched if you followed professional sports for any length of time. And thats not taken from any board or blog that’s fact.

  58. 58 Nova Scotia Isles Fan

#49: We may have Big Slick’s chance against Queens, but I’ll still take it.

  59. 59 IslesPassion21

I’m not sure if most islander fans noticed but Danis has been better than an avg number 1 goalie. This kid has been phenominal. I think this team would be making a huge mistake if they let him sign anywhere else. God forbid, DP never returns to his AllStar calliber form and we need Danis for the long term, we might have another allstar n the making. Regarding the post that only 2 of the last 11 teams with the worst record getting the 1st overall pick sounds wrong but what do I know? :dontknow:

  60. 60 cgs878

Well, the hockey gods sure do have a sense of humor. Bergie was turning heads in the last few games & he’ll be missed. Joey Mac wasn’t, but hey, why not add another goalie injury to the list for 08-09? Yikes. I am concerned that timeframes for both Weight and Park to return are not being mentioned. Is Weight even practicing or with the team on this roadtrip? Where has Park gone?

All I ask for the remainder of the season is for the Islanders to keep the games interesting. If the games are like last night’s Ottawa-Tampa Bay game (read: snoozefest!), I’ll be getting more sleep for sure. Hey wait, that might not be a bad thing.

  61. 61 cgs878

Hey CB- the timestamp on these entries is an hour behind, and you still haven’t updated the copyright to be 2009. Yes, I’m anal about these things.

  62. 62 Isles4cups

Another day and more talk of Islanders tanking games to get the #1 pick. I would suggest to all of those that continue on this rant to nominate a spokesperson and suggest to all the 19-25 year olds in the Islanders locker room that they should lose the remainder of their games…for the fans of course.

  63. 63 kevin fitz

Any idea who is replacing bergy tonight?
