YOU’RE KILLING US, KATE
Town supervisor still pushing arena-only scam
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray still believes the Coliseum can be renovated as a stand-alone project – this time with Obama bucks. Is Murray just blind to what Nassau County insisted on and approved? Does she not talk to Tom Suozzi? Does she not, uh, read newspapers – or watch News 12 when she’s not on it?
I know I was slow to this one. Been out all day. Here’s Eden Laikin’s Newsday story via Baumbach & Reiber – because Jim was kind enough to be my guest at the Hofstra class I teach.
Maybe I’m still hung over from PB Night. Maybe I’m just burnt after an early morning at a Nassau County conference (more on that tomorrow) and a long day and night in the city. But this can’t be politics as usual. This can’t be Murray stalling so she doesn’t have to deal with a project she wants no part of. She cannot be serious. I think this is now at the point where it is fair to ask:
Is there something wrong with Kate Murray?
Comments.

Shes hurting her chances big time for re-election come November….Shes a tool
-
answer: yes
-
i have a bad feeling we wont be on long island soon!!!
-
I hate Kate Murray, it’s too bad that the next election is after the 120 days that wang has to be able to move the team. Because it would be sooooooo great when she loses the election and the new guy comes in and signs it his first day because he knows its for the best
-
I hope Taveras likes Kansas City because that’s where TOH is determined to see them play. Can we get an AHL team in the renovated NCVMC? Maybe a farm team of the Rangers?
-
Do you think Wang would wait till the election to make the final ultimatum? Obviously, he wants his dream and is tired of all the wait and see politics but if someone gets elected where he KNOWS that person is on the same page, does he wait a little extra?
-
The Brooklyn Islanders
-
kate murray must be a rangers fan and chanting kansas city at the town meetings
-
i hope kate murray enjoys her last days in office because i guarantee she does NOT win re-election. i will personally start up the grass roots campaign for any one who runs against her. her actions as “town supervisor” are appalling!
-
She is getting bad advice from somewhere because whenever she opens her mouth, the more and more it illustrates she has no idea what is going on
-
Only Joe Day was more useless.
-
Kate Murray is a complete political hack. She makes me sick, and clearly needs to be tossed out of office.
-
trico, point well taken! how bout that Mayhem team?
-
Bloodyskull, that Mayhem team needs to storm Kate Murray’s affices and lay the smackdown.
-
She needs to be kicked out of office! She’s clearly an idiot. Is she blind or something??
Can’t wait to see her lose the next election!
-
It’s all about positioning now, as soon as something gets public and in the papers, it’s already too late, this is never going to happen, Wang knows it…it’s all about people being able to point the finger after the fact.
-
Unbelievable…the clown of hempstead is at it again. How one person is allowed to do this amazes me….can’t the county do something?
-
maybe cablevision is paying her off… i think they would be better off without the islanders around… one less team to pay rights to and the rangers become even bigger with islander fans eventually over the years switching over
-
Murray is looking to become just another body bag in the train wreck that has become the GOP. I don’t live in the TOH so it’s like my opinion really matters but this lady does not deserve another term.
It looks like Long Islanders as well as rival Rangers fans want to see this project come to fruition.
-
Chris TNC (1) ….I see how it is – I say the same thing and you disagree but when CB says it you swap sides?
-
We need to organize something, something big
-
She can’t be bothered, plain and simple. Not enough in it for her (as far as political capitol)
-
You know it’s bad when just about every town employee thinks she’s horrible too.
-
Somebody (Lighthouse Development) better get on the ball and start producing some kick-backs to Ms. Murray. It’s the only thing these GOPers listen to. Oh, and just kicking this around in my head lately…KC Highlanders, KC Baby Backs, KC Dry-Rubs…what would the new nickname be?
-
Attend the information session on the 26th of March. If you live in the area and truly want to make a difference, you need to show up. There is strength in numbers. Be seen, be heard.
-
She must be a part owner of roosevelt field mall.
-
I think she just wants to look like it’s “not her fault” and she’s not the problem, when truth points otherwise.
-
Has the Town of Hempstead ever had a Democratic Town Supervisor? I doubt it. The TOH residents automatically vote Republican. The Town is the 21st Century equivalent of Archie Bunker’s Queens of the 1970′s. I can’t see her being voted out of office.
-
Ok, dumb question. Is there a reason Wang can’t start the reno on the Coli right away or is a brand new arena part of the project?
-
Does Kate have family in KC. Seems like she is going out of her way to kill this project.
I wonder what they will call the team?
-
Daryl C has a good question. Why can’t the “illegal” stimulus money (topic for discussion at another time and place) be sought and spent on the NCVMC regardless of the future of the LH project? It’s “free” money anyway (well, actually our future tax dollars yet to be collected). That might jolt the LH project.
-
The Idea behind doing the entire project & not just the NVMC is if wang renovates the coli, it will basically be a 80 mil gift to nassau, if he can develope the endless parking lot around the coli, he will actually recoup those losses & eventually make money.
The theory about Cablevision & Dolan being behind the scenes is interesting though… -
CB, someone should post her email address so we can deluge her inbox with support emails for the LH.
-
Thanks, Jim, that makes sense. I figured there was a good reason.
-
This has nothing to do with Dolan or the Rangers. Give me a break guys. This crap has been going on for years in TOH. That’s why it’s falling apart and nothing ever gets done.
-
CB is there any way to find out if one of Murrays main supporters is Simon Malls? They pay for most of the Anti-mall stuff in Syosset at the Cerro Wire site. They dont want competition for their retail stores and restauants. They stand to lose the most out of anyone if this thing is built. How can we find this out?
-
Agree with Jim….how do we get her email address?
-
CB — are you alluding to what cousin/Captain K Lynch said weeks ago that she must be getting her strings pulled from some potentially affected entity?
-
I realize Wang wants the entire project and not just the renovated Coli so he can recoup his losses on the team, and rightfully so. Does anyone know if a renovated coli would still come with the current crappy lease? And is a new coli alone a nonstarter for Wang? I apologize if these have been answered in other blog entries. I haven’t been reading the Lighthoue ones in depth though I know I should be.
-
Why do taxpayers have to pay for arenas and stadiums anyway? I do not want the Islanders to leave, but Mr Wang should pay for this himself. No more corporate welfare.
-
Rich, Wang does not own the Coliseum and he IS paying the bulk of the cost to renovate.
-
I was with The Metal Chick, I didn’t take it as a bad thing, but as she said, I guess I was wrong. In any event, isn’t Tom Suozzi a supporter of the Lighthouse? If she’s asking him to ask for the money, I could only think it’s a good thing.
I understand the concept that the WHOLE PROJECT needs to be accepted, but maybe she’s looking towards the future accepted project. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like she’s letting her feelings be known. It would be nice if she could tell us her thoughts about this. -
Rich M….he is paying for it himself. Kate Murray continues her grand standing but is going to lose. Nassau County and many members of the TOH have started the Lighthouse ball rolling, when the project gets the green light she will try taking all the credit. She MUST be voted out come November no matter if the project moves forward or dies.
Time to start talking to Queens!
-
Also, TOH can only profit from this project. For some reason Miss Piggy has some underlying reason why she does not want to approve this thing. Has she stated a valid reason why yet? Or is it personal opinion at this point?
-
Either (1)she is extremely stupid and just can’t grasp the fact that with a stand alone renovated Coliseum Charles Wang will continue to bleed money, or (2)she is being manipulated behind the scenes by an entity or entities who stand to lose money due to the presence of the Lighthouse project. My moneys on #2 but I wouldn’t rule out #1. Either way she needs to be tossed out like yesterdays trash.
-
If she gets this money and renovates the NVMC this will leave the door wide open for her to deny the Lighthouse project and say “well at least we renovated the NVMC and that is good enough”
-
It seems fairly obvious that Kate Murray has close ties to some entity that will be adversely affected by the lighthouse project.
This project seems like it would be so good for Long Island and create so many jobs.
Yet, all we are getting is the usual political posturing.
What are the negatives of this project? Seems like it has a ton of support, yet I don’t hear any groups or people speaking out against it.
Murray seems like she is on her own island here – yet has the power to destroy this project. Very worrisome. Wish Wang’s deadline would be AFTER the election.
-
Get onto the TOH website and start submitting feedback to Murray directly. We can all bitch and complain here but it won’t make a difference. If she gets 100 emails today about this maybe she’ll wake up.
-
RichM, Wang is gonna pay for it himself, but he also wants to develop the land around it.
Wang is going to renovate a building that the County owns – its the best deal in sports. If Wang doesn’t get what he wants then the team goes up for sale and so far the only buyers are in Kansas City or Canada. Nobody else local wants this team. -
The TOH website actually works… they actually read those letters.. trust me. My family knows a few politicians and my dad got a phone call after I sent a scathing email to Kate Murray. Send them in people:
http://townofhempstead.org/content/home/contact.html -
You should check out kate’s profile on their website, supposedly she asks herself every morning “How can I improve the lives of the people I serve?” How about approving the Lighthouse and creating thousands of jobs on LI
-
Mouthwash,
I don’t think you can say that nobody wants to buy this team and keep it here. While there are people speaking up about wanting the team in KC, if Wang put the team on the block, I’m sure there would be several interested, LOCAL, parties. New York is the #1 media market. If there is an offer from Queens and Brooklyn to bring the team over, I’m sure somebody would step up. Wang is nearly 10 years into owning the team, that’s nearly 10 years of lost money because of the Coliseum lease. If a new owner stepped in and didn’t have to worry about the Coli Lease, and be able to move to a new arena, like in Queens, with favorable terms, it would be profitable. -
“or (2)she is being manipulated behind the scenes by an entity or entities who stand to lose money due to the presence of the Lighthouse project.”
ding! ding! ding! ding!
we have a winner. -
One last thing, something that’s being lost here is the final paragraph of Laikin’s article.
“Suozzi said he isn’t waiting for the town’s approvals and is already negotiating a lease with Wang and Rechler because he wants to have everything “ready to go.”
I think Suozzi’s more in control of this whole Lighthouse Project than people know.
-
It will get passed. I’m not worried at all.
The Islanders will NEVER EVER move.
-
Can someone please post details of the next meeting involving this, I would def like to attend
-
As soon as that lease is signed the Islanders will have 120 days to terminate it and decide to move. We might find out the fate of this team within the next 4 months.
-
I kind of don’t understand something. If we were to get stimulus money to totally redo the colliseum,(I mean redo it just like what is planned now)and a new more Islander friendly lease is renegotiated with Nassau. Then why can this not be done.
I understand the lighthouse is what Nassaue cty approved but come on, if TOH doesn’t want it and the money for the colliseum is not coming out of Wangs pocket, then what gives.
You just can’t tell me that once the Islanders start winning that there will not be a full building more often then not. You can’t tell me that there are not profits there when it is, I just dont get it. -
Murray is obviously taking bribes from someone. Get that #@#% out of office.
-
Yes, Kate Murray appears to be a complete idiot. And, yes, as such, she has way too much power in a situation like this. But it’s people like RichM (41) who could end up having just as much to do with killing this project: uninformed people who just see this as a project for the Islanders/Coliseum only, who automatically assume that it’s just another greedy owner looking to the taxpayers for a handout, and who then start their bitching and moaning without bothering to get informed.
That’s a big problem here, folks. The way this message is getting out there needs to change. Like yesterday. And it should start with dumping the “Meet me at the Lighthouse” atrocity. That song/ad cannot be helping things.
-
Tell your friends and family to vote for CB to replace Katie come this November.
-
I posted this before: The politicans (Kate Murray) want no part of this project. They think their constituents don’t want it, and they don’t want to have to vote on it. They are going to stall and stall and stall some more until Wang and Rechler give up and the project dies.
The only way this project gets done is if a) Kate Murray and her minions are told in no uncertian terms that their constituents want the Lighthouse approved, or b) Kate Murray and her minions are voted out of office and the next wave of politicans that come in are certain that their entire constituency wants this project, not just a few Islander fans.
Amazing, we could lose the Islanders to a Godd**n failed real estate deal and nothing more.
-
Maybe Kate Murray is burnt out and fed up with Long Island, just like many of us born-and-bred locals who are hanging on and watching our bank accounts get drained by out of control taxes and tanking financial markets? No, that couldn’t be it… she has a cushy government job that she needs to get re-elected to. Wait a second, she’ll probably get elected (or appointed) to a position within Nassau County or NY State in her next political life. Why should she care? (ouch, I think I bit my tongue ‘n’ cheek).
-
Does the TOH even WANT this project? If they don’t, then it’s Kate Murray’s job to put the kibash on it. What do the people want? We know what Charles Wang & Islander fans want, BUT what do the citizens of the area want?
3 things Choo-choo Wang needs to do.
Step 1 – Reconstruct the Marriot into low-income housing.
Step 2 – Reconstruct the coliseum into a Maximum Security State Prision.
Step 3 – Move the Isles to Queens & make more money than God.
-
I think the thing that’s most troubling about her retorts is that she keeps harping on this misguided, uninformed idea that the Coliseum can be renovated without Lighthouse approval.
First of all, the Lighthouse is not just about keeping the Isles on Long Island and renovating the NVMC. Its an entire project, and that project has been submitted to her and the fools she works with for a vote. She’s not voting on just the coliseum renovation, she’s supposed to be voting on the entire proposal that’s been placed before her. So why does she continue to only focus on the myth that the coliseum can be renovated without the Lighhouse and not address any other part of the development?
Secondly, politicans are voted into office by their constituents and are expected to do their jobs when they get there. Part of being a politican is making decisions, lots of times tough decisions on controversial issues. Kate Murray and the other morons governing with her at the TOH are not making a decision on this project. They are stalling to take the easy way out.
Kate Murray needs to stop stalling and make a tough decision, one way or the other. Instead of going on TV or complaining to print media about having to make the decision, just make a decision already! Do your Godd**n job and vote on the proposal. If she or the other politicans don’t have the backbone to make a decision on this project, they shouldn’t be in office to begin with.
-
(Post#51 Great Link) Just sent this to Kate Murry. Everyone should get involved and flood her inbox.
As a concerned resident of Long Island, I really don’t understand what is going on with this project. I have heard you speak several times about this subject, but not once have I heard you actually support it. I would love to know if you actually want to see it move forward or not. This is not just about a hockey team , it is so much more important than that. I’ve heard you say many times that we could be renevating the Coliseum now but don’t you understand that this is not all this is about. It’s Long Islands own stimulus plan, JOBS, JOBS, JOBS. From everything I’ve heard and read there aren’t any major groups that are against it, yet I haven’t heard you say that your supporting it. I hope you will be able to attend the Community Educational Outreach Meeting which is being held at the Marriott Hotel on March 26. All the important parties involved will be there, you need to be there also. Let’s help grow Long Island and make us proud once again to live here. Do what’s best for all of us, and support the Lighthouse and let’s build something we all can be proud of. And of course let’s keep our Islanders on Long Island.
-
I believe the stimulus money would be for infrastructure improvements to the site (and site access), not for renovating the coliseum itself.
At any rate, someone mentioned a figure of $80M to renovate. It’s more like $400M. Most of this would come from the Lighthouse Group’s pocket. Add that to money Wang has already lost on the team, plus the fact that stand-alone arenas are generally not very profitable (if at all), and you can see why it makes no financial sense for Wang (or any other owner) not to redevelop the entire site.
-
Pat (67): That was well-written. Much more polite than I can be with that idiot. But hell, I’ll give it a shot.
-
51, I’m glad that you posted that web link. I was just going to do the same. Maybe CB should post it in a prominent spot on the home page of the blog so people can innundate the TOH office with questions about Kate.
I sent in a question to Kate. I didn’t word it the way I really wanted to. E.g. threatening bodily harm. But I politely asked her to explain why she opposes the lighthouse project.
-
Thanks Jethro, Belive me I would love to tell her how I really feel, but I know that would’nt get us anywhere.
-
Kate Murray nor her minions read any of these emails.
-
Jethro09 (69): Im glad to hear it! I think being polite is the best bet. Here is what I sent her:
———-
“How can you improve the lives of the people you serve?”That is a great question for an elected representative of the people to ask herself each morning. However, it may not always be the easiest question to answer for oneself.
Ms Murray… if you are not certain what the Town of Hempstead truly needs in these economic times, how to improve the lives of the voters, listen to what all the people are telling you. Vocalize and specify your support for the Lighthouse Project. Please.
I will attend the public meeting about the project at the Long Island Marriott on Thursday, March 26, at 7:00pm. I urge you to come as well. It will be an outstanding opportunity for you to let all of Nassau County know that you do indeed support the will and desire of the people. You can make a statement right there that you are on the side of progress and not stagnation. I sincerely hope that you will attend. I look forward to hearing you state that you support the project Nassau County voted for and that you will not hinder Long Island’s progress.
———- -
(72) You are incorrect. I have gotten two letters and a phone call regarding my letters to the TOH. I think when they are flooded with a high number of letters they do not digest every word, they just categorize them by topics.
-
CB, would you consider using your connections and this forum to set up some sort of picket rally to support the Lighthouse project???
We can all gather together at Murrays offices and make our voices heard instead of complaining to each other.
I wonder how many would make it a priority and actually show up. Show of hands???
-
Chris,
does she think this helps her get elected? in all seriousness, does she even want to be elected? I live in NYC and i want to come out and campaign against her!!
-
CB, that photo of Kate Murray is almost 4 years old.
She’s actually 40lbs heavier now and cannot wear high heels for fear of creating potholes.
Seriously, this political posturing is frustrating. Bad enough we suffer injury after injury on the ice while, as fans, getting mental concussions with this drama off it. -
“Is there something wrong with Kate Murray”?
SomeTHING, would imply one issue, I believe she has multiple issues.
For all future articles involving Kate Murray, I suggest you use the photo from her wikipedia page. I think it’s the most identifyable
-
Heres an option I thought about…instead of moving them–would he ever consider putting them up for sale? I realize money is important but if he is not willing to keep the team here and work something out no matter what (even though that would kill his leverage)-maybe he should sell if he is not committed to keeping the team here. Last resort option though.
-
Just a thought. If you pulled this garbage out here in Nevada, we would mount a recall. Is that a possibility there? Even if she’d be out of office by the time it happens, maybe a recall petition would be some sort of security to Charles Wang that he should wait until the election?
-
Voting the Murray out of office is too late by then.
Let’s look at this from another perspective .. Kate unintentionally has a great idea … Nassau County should get Stim money to get the project rolling … and the County … should then press the TOH that taking the fed money (which would include massive infrastructure improvements) would be conditional on the TOH’s approval of the whole plan (in other words … TOH has to make the plan work) … hold that over “HER” TOH’s head … nice move Kate … this enables Nassau to have even more favorable lease terms for Wang … and gets the NVMC part of the project back on track for July 2009 shovels in the ground…. thoughts CB?
-
Refering to my last post … the carrot being the infrastructure improvements: Mass transit, sewer & water, roadways, light rail and outlying neighborhood improvments to schools and municipal buildings to support a future larger pop. created by the Lighthouse … I have more ideas floating in my head … but limited words.
-
You can bet that either her or her assistants are reading this, so comments like #82 are better off eliminated from these discussions. The fact is that the proponents of the Lighthouse have been able to lay out very strong arguments in favor of the project, and sinking down to that level of stupidity is not helping our cause. We have much on our side: the need for Nassau to move forward, the success of these sorts of mixed-use developments elsewhere, the fact that her alternative plan is not really a plan at all, etc. We don’t even need to bring in the Islanders. So let’s keep the personal stuff to ourselves.
-
Eric (#79), even if you could find an owner or ownership group that would be willing to keep the Team on LI (extremely unlikely), they would find the same issues that Wang has. Any new owners would also consistently lose money, and would be forced to consider moving the Team or re-sale.
The only way the Isles can stay in the area is it becomes a financially viable business. Being in a small market location, with smaller companies available for corporate support, in a non-hockey community, this Team cannot depend on fans alone. As already shown, fans will not show up consistently during down years. It’s not like MTL, TOR, NYR, STL, PHI who will fill seats regardless of the state of their teams.
Wang clearly wants to keep the Team here and wants to share in its success, financial and otherwise. We’ve already had owners that cared more about $ than the Team (e.g., Milstein). My firm belief is if it doesn’t work with Wang, this Team is gone.
-
Hahaha…and it looks like CB already cleaned up #82!!
-
I’m curous…CB last one, I promise…. how many people on this board actually live in the TOH and can vote against her? I can’t.
-
I just want to thank Johnny Islander (78) for posting that link. I just threw up all over my computer when that photo appeared. I really don’t understand why someone would not want to help create jobs and get more money from taxes into their towns?
-
The project will provide $70 million per year in tax revenue and create 20,000 permanent jobs (not including 60,000 jobs during/for construction phase). Kate’s “plan” will create “hundreds, if not thousands” (in her words) of jobs but will not bring any tax revenue and will cost the taxpayers.
Anyway, it looks like she is firmly against the project to me. I hope there is a way around her.
-
LOL!!! Yeah JayK … CB deleted post #82 … and now I became post #82 … ughhhh … I saw it before … and yeah … there is no need for people to take personal shots at Ms. Murray … That aside I think the stimulus money that Nassau can procure for the LHP can really help the local governement with improvements to the local infrastructure that actually now makes the Light House project a magnet for stimulus money. This way it has the potential to eliminate any and all finacial liabilty for the TOH & Nassau county to make infrastructure improvments. BTW … Pat (67) & Chris (73) … excellent letters to Kate.
-
Let her renovate it with town money, and then get Wang out of the albatross of a lease they have with the county (not the TOH but whatever, since i am just venting here).
How again would it be in Wang’s best interest to renovate the arena when the lease is so terrible?
-
I know exactly what needs to be done! Some organization (either Newsday, The New York Post, News 12 Long Island) needs to now take a poll on if the Lighthouse Project fails, would you vote for Kate Murray come November! Obviously the results will be opposed to her re-election. This is the real thing that politicians care about! This will make her office realize that they better get on board with this project or there out of a job!
-
For this project to happen it may take the excitement of getting John Tavares. He would bring energy and enthusiasm that may be needed to get this project going!
-
look at kate murray… just look at her.
-
If Kate doesnt want the jobs and tax revenue for the TOH I am sure there are surrounding communities that would. I personally do not believe Kansas City is a viable option for a hockey team. They are having trouble with their Pro Football, and Baseball teams. Now they are going to support an NHL frachise? Kansas City to me is a smoke screen. At this point I would like to see the Islanders move, but to somewhere in the area. Let another community benefit from having the Islanders. Screw the TOH. Brooklyn, Queens or even Suffolk County! The Islanders have a passionate fanbase, they are viable. I would love to keep the Islanders in the area and tell Kate to F….. off. They dont deserve to even have them at this point.
-
Nice McEnroe tie-in (intentional?)
You CAN NOT BE SERIOUS!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekQ_Ja02gTY -
My suggestion would be to start emailing the Republican Party State Chairman, Mr. Joseph Mondello, regarding the political damage that is and will hit the GOP if this project is not approved. Some top-down pressure might be the only thing that gets the Supervisor’s attention.
-
Wang will get fed up sooner rather than later, he will probably walk away from the deal if there is no approval by the summer. She will single handly kill this deal!
-
WE HAVE to get to that meeting on the 26th! No excuses!! As I’ve said already, WE have to get other Hempstead residents to back the project and write to Kate to tell how many jobs it will create! It can’t be just Isles fans complaining…spread the word!!
-
Photoshop time!
Take that picture of Kate and replace the banner with the “Mission Accomplished” banner behind Bush on the aircraft carrier but this time the banner is on moving vans as the Islanders head to KC, you have the new logo for PB.

I didnt necessarily think this was a bad thing, I thought if she was asking Nassau to apply for stimulus money that would halp the project as a whole- since that is what Nassau already approved. But I guess I was looking at it differently, because you, lettherebelighthouse, and some other blogs are all seeing it differently.
I guess I just want her to come around so badly that I was hoping that was what she was doing.
