BREAKING NEWS: ISLANDERS TRADE BILL GUERIN
Sent to Pittsburgh for a third round pick in 2009

The Islanders have traded Bill Guerin to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a third round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

The captain gave the Islanders a season and three-quarters of solid leadership and play, but struggled to score goals in his final months with the team and saw his icetime cut by about four minutes per game. This season the 38-year old Guerin scored 16 goals in 61 games for the Islanders.

Guerin should see some power play time with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and his leadership and experience should prove invaluable to the Penguins in the playoffs. Best of luck to Guerin as he pursues his second Stanley Cup ring.

isn’t this quite obvious by now? anyway, in more important news, lets root for the ducks.

  2. 2 ken

not a terrible trade now. would have liked a 2nd, but considering the circumstances, ill take the 3rd.

  3. 3 CT Isles Fan

Should have just got a 3rd for him straight up to begin with.

  4. 4 walter

    lol

  5. 5 Julie

Do we know the actual number of the pick yet? Someone said it could be 79th to 83rd.

  6. 6 Rich Pilon is an Animal

Yeah, I agree we should have had at the very least a 3rd rounder to begin with.. I would have liked to see a prospect too. But in the end, we came out with something. He was probably going to walk anyway.

  7. 7 NYICHAMP39

this trade would have made perfect sense if every round was bumped up one.

Trade him for a fourth that turns to a third if they make the playoffs which turns into a second if they won a series.

Ill take the third but it feels like we should have walked away with a second now that Pitt has rebounded their season and advanced farther into the playoffs.

  8. 8 Paul23

Wait a minute! I thought if Pitt won two rounds and Guerin played in half the games, then the pick becomes a second rouder. Is that right?

  9. 9 JayK

No, Paul23, it’s over. Guerin could win the Conn Smyth, the Pens win the Cup, and it won’t make a bit of difference. Our march up the draft board on the back of the Penguins’ advance in the playoffs is done.

  10. 10 Smokey

Garth could have done better by making this a second rounder if the Pens won another playoff round, but all in all, this turned out A-OK. Not great, just fine.

  11. 11 Oliver

Thank you CB for interjecting some humor into a somewhat droll day after the Soundtigers elimination from the Calder Cup Playoffs - LMAO!!!

  12. 12 Giaco

Billy was never going to get us back a 2nd… Pre-injured Weight might have but not Billy - Garth looks smart now but a 5th would have been bad

  13. 13 admin

When you consider he was taken off the ice on a Saturday night and not traded until an hour before the deadline, it became pretty apparent there was no market in the end. The 5-4-3 seemed to be a way to save face for all parties…CB

  14. 14 beatlebailey

never though i would say this but hope the isles follow the jets playbook from this nfl draft day. Jets get their face of the franchise in QB Mark Sanchez..isles take Tavares!!

  15. 15 isles99

once the washington trade got squashed, billy g’s value took a huge dip….all in all…i hope garth trades the 26th pick(should the sharks lose this series), the 31st pick, the 37th pick (orginially toront’s and the 3rd rounder from pitt to move back into the top 10….this way we could get the franchise forward, john tavares, and franchise d-man, jared cowan.

  16. 16 mrlbem

    Isles99,

I commend you for your zeal, but what team drafting in the Top 10 would ever make that trade? Even Garth last year was only moving down two spots at a time while stockpiling the extra picks. Here, you’re asking a team to move down 16 places!!! Not gonna happen. Garth would have to add some live bodies to the mix as well.

  17. 17 isles99

mrlbem, the team that would do that trade is toronto at #7, they need fresh new talent. they have been looking everywhere for fresh talent. they have signed some of college hockey’s best fa’s. what better way to supplement your prospect pool than with 4 prime draft picks….and plus i never said that trade was going to actually happen, its just something i would try to look into…there was even talk here a couple of weeks ago in trying to trade with brian burke to get his #7 overall. my proposal isnt any more wild than some of the stuff posted here when burke was barking about trading for tavares.

  18. 18 Ben

    # 16 - I think that there might be interest in a couple of draft picks if they can throw in a prospect from our system.

I think we need to obtain more high end drafts and getting another pick in the top seven would help.

  19. 19 Will OC

Totally agree 16. So many people have been suggesting these trade multiple picks to move into the top 10 scenarios. When it comes to the first round, picks rarely move more than a couple spots if live bodies aren’t involved. I like where we are at. We have more picks in the top 90 than most teams have in the whole draft. This will be a good draft

  20. 20 Sumo Goalie

Thanks Pens. Go Ducks! Go Caps!

  21. 21 Blizzard

I bet Washington wished they made that trade now…..LOL!!!

  22. 22 avolp55TURGEONFICHAUD

I personally can’t wait to resume rooting against the Pens and Sydney Crosby again. These past six games vs. the Flyers have been WEIRD!

I sure wish Guerin could suit up for the Caps vs the Rags so he could help them too! God I hope Lundqvist CHOKES!!!

  23. 23 Isle_in_LA

In other words, you don’t have any new stories:) This is going to be a long spring/summer.

  24. 24 brian

Everything is coming up smiles for the Islanders as far as where their picks will be in the draft (Assuming Ducks can hold on).

    Anyone else concerned? LOL

  25. 25 MJS

    # 16, that trade might get the Isles up somewhere around pick 15. The Isles should try using one or two, probably two, of those 2nd rounders to move up to pick 21-23 depending on who is available. It would be really nice if the team added a top flight defenseman with some size with that second first rounder.

Also CB, breaking news. Har, har, har.

  26. 26 blitz

Nice take on things…Got a good laugh.

  27. 27 John

folks, a third round pick for a player that will be 39 next season and may not have even been with the team? thats a prospect and a gain of 20 years? this is a GREAT trade. the worst thing that happens is the player doesn’t pan out.

  28. 28 mrlbem

Now, more regarding the Islanders trading up. I can envision the following scenario. We take Tavares with the first pick. NOw, we’re looking at Tavares and Bailey as our number 1 and number 2 centers. If you want a checking center for the number 3 line, then Nielsen probably doesn;t fit the bill. Sooooo, does Nielsen then become expendable? Would Snow trade the San Jose pick, our 2nd, Toronto’s 2nd and Nielsen to move up to the Top 10 to pick a defenseman like Cowan? Realistically, I think that’s the type of deal you’d be looking at to move up, and I even doubt that would be enough.

  29. 29 db

i dont see snow trading away frans neilsen who is a 24 year old 2nd/3rd line center who can probably score 50 to 60 points in a full season and only makes 500k per year for the next 3 years.

  30. 30 isles316

Snow had no bargaining room after the first apparent trade died. I’ll take a 3rd rounder.

Sharks look real good so far.

  31. 31 Chickendirt

Thus far I gotta say Snow is looking really shrewd. Pittsburgh goes to the 2nd round giving us another third. It’s a low third but it’s a third.

Anaheim is on the brink of a major upset over San Jose. A Pick everyone thought was gonna be 29th-30th turns out to be a 26th.

Heading into the draft the best trade made here is the one you don’t make. Keep all the picks and hold the line. It’s not worth packaging 3-4 picks to move up and grab one guy.

Go with the averages and build some depth. You can get a good player in any round. Mark Streit is living proof of that.

  32. 32 Strummer's Army

It sounds much better now that it is for a 3. I’m not wishing Guerin luck in the playoffs because intentional or not he was giving nothing at the end.

  33. 33 isles316

Chickendirt, by the way I would have to say that your rants on Olli Jokenin have proven somewhat true. He looks brutal in his first playoff venture.

  34. 34 FIsles

    (28) Nielsen doesn’t become expendable, and Tavares won’t play regularly in the middle anyway. Just a year ago Nielsen was projected to be a 3rd line center with 2nd line potential, but it wasn’t out of the question he’d start on the 4th line. Nielsen’s contract is also really good value for money to the Islanders, so I just don’t see any point in moving him unless someone is desperate to overpay for him in a trade. He’s also a Gordon favorite.

  35. 35 Chris TMC

Blizzard (21): I agree with you- but I think that they wished they maded it then, too. I think it was that they just couldnt move the right players/salary to ultimately make it happen.

The Pens (and admittedly, the Devs) are the teams in our division that actually show the Isles some respect… players like Marty and Malkin have said good things about Isles players and the teams work ethic. I wish Guerin nothing but the best. Ive always liked the guy and its nice to see him being an important part of that team. Since the Isles arent there in the PO’s I say go for it, Billy! :D

  36. 36 JayK

I stayed up last night to see the Sharks knock off the Ducks about 6 minutes into OT, on one of those goals I hate: there’s a mad scramble around the net and in all the craziness the puck gets across the line, seemingly on just the vibrations of all that traffic (though Hiller helped).

OK, back to Anaheim in pursuit of that 26th pick.

  37. 37 19 Isle in NJ 22

CB pointed out something that some of us seem to forget … Billy G was pulled from the lineup right during a pre-game skate … when that deal fell through his value declined not because of his ability … but due to the Isles’ desperation to unload him and save face.

I too wish the Isles could get a 2nd rounder for him … but realistically he wasn’t even putting up numbers to justify a straight up #3 rounder the last 6 weeks before the trade… Snow got what he could considering the odd circumstances … and I guess I can be happy with what we got considering.

  38. 38 Kevin

To Clarify the trade, if the Penguins win the Stanley Cup the Isles pick #92..If they lose the Cup, 91st, if they get to Conference Finals, 89th & 90th…If the Penguins lose in the 2nd rd, the pick would be in the 84-87 range…..The Rangers have the 47th overall pick(Compensary for Cheraponov) so the 2nd rd is 1 pick longer than usual….So we need Pittsburgh to lose in the 2nd rd.

  39. 39 kabbage

There is really no need to move up in the first round unless someone from the top six or seven slips down to the mid to latter part of the first round. Keep in mind these are 18 year old and most after the first few will not be expected to play in the NHL next year. These players should be drafted on potential and developed properly. I know it is hard to have patience being with an organization that has had to wait so long, but it is a necessary part of building.

  40. 40 Coach B

At least the trade happened faster this time.

  41. 41 Will Teese

lol, hilarious CB. Glad to see we got the 3rd rounder out of this. Let’s hope jankowski and his crew have some good players lined up in their minds.

  42. 42 robby d

Garth should have worked out a 2nd rd pick for a Stanley Cup Finals appearance and a 1st rd pick if Pitt won the Cup. Bill Guerin has been a very instrumental player for Pitt. At this point, a 3rd rounder ain’t cuttin’ it. Hopefully, the Ducks can put away the Sharks tonight and we end up with the 26th pick. Jankowski needs to draft another Lucic for us.
