SOUND TIGERS SEASON OVER
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 4, Bridgeport 2

by admin on April 24th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

9:25 pm - Further proof the NYI prospect pool needs more development and more talented youngsters to develop. Jesse Joensuu and Justin DiBenedetto get the goals tonight, a good thing. What isn’t is the fact that – NHLer Blake Comeau aside – not one Sound Tiger is close to a sure thing to jump into the Islanders’ lineup on a regular basis next season. This was the perception going into the first round playoff series. Not nearly enough happened in Bridgeport’s loss to the Penguins in five games to change that perception.  Talk AHL and NHL hockey here within the Guidelines.

Something has to change with this organization. Just like the parent club the minor league team has the same playoff issues.

Just like the parent club the minor league team has the same injury plagues.

I can’t recall if I’ve ever seen another franchise in pro sports like this.

I’m just curious … if there is anyway to compile the main games lost to injury in both the NHL, AHL and ECHL … heck … even add some NCAA and CHL to the equation… and figure out what the common injuries have.

This injuries are costing more than man games to teams … they may ultimately be shortening careers. As a player I’d be highly concerned … I know the Isles had two back to back epidemic years … but some other teams got the injury bug big time also.

  3. avatar UIF says:

    Good luck, B-port.

  4. avatar Coach B says:

Though Bridgeport had a good record this season, most of the NHL prospects played for the Islanders. It just reflects the re-building this team is in the process of doing.

  5. avatar Rick says:

Let’s go boys – take it to the Pens!

  6. avatar Michael B. says:

    blah

    Let’s pull out a W here

  8. avatar Ray says:

    1-0 WIlkes Barre

  9. avatar Ray says:

DIBO gets his first pro goal! 1-1!

  10. avatar dan from va beach says:

    freakin dibo yo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. avatar timm says:

DiBenedetto with his first professional goal, awesome. i really think that this kid might be a huge surprise for the isles organization. keeping my fingers crossed.

  12. avatar Strummer's Army says:

    Let’s go Bridgeport!

Hey, if Ana knocks out SJ in the first round doesn’t the pick have to be higher then 26?

  13. avatar themass says:

Strummer- I thought the same thing… Best team to lose in round one should get the 22nd pick accorking to my calc. I’m probably wrong… GO TIGERS!

  14. avatar Neil says:

I think the teams that advance to the conference finals and beyond go 27-30. Everyone else is in recod order, so SJ would be 26 if they lose this series.

  15. avatar RichM says:

Duchene just scored in his playoff game. He looks good tonight.

  16. avatar DavidNYC says:

Joensuu makes it 3-2! Go Soundtigers!
BRI Joensuu, (2) (Colliton, Callahan), 14:25

  17. avatar RichM says:

Does Colliton have a future with the big club?

  18. avatar jack says:

@ (12) 8 teams addvance past the first round. 30-8=22

  19. avatar dan from va beach says:

    all over

  20. avatar Josh says:

Well, that’s the end of that. Not trying to make an excuse, but the AHL’s playoff format is a joke. Geez, a couple of 100+ point teams meeting the first round… that’s good for butts in the seats.

  21. avatar 7th Woman says:

    Sorry Jack. You tried.

  22. avatar Shoogah says:

No!!! I had such high hopes for them. :(

  23. avatar RichM says:

Duchene has a hat trick in a big playoff game tonight. He is very good. He is moving up on draft lists.

  24. avatar Matt says:

good post about our prospect pool. hopefully next year’s Bridgeport team is younger and has more prospects on it.

  25. avatar UIF says:

CB, or any regular B-port watchers – does Joensuu have a chance to become a serious front-of-the-net presence like a Ryan Smyth or Holmstrom, or his his game different than that. I had heard he was that kind of player, but didn’t see that so much when he was with the Isles. He seemed more of a lurker to me…and I don’t mean that in a bad way at all.

  26. avatar Strummer's Army says:

That stinks, it would have benefited the prospects so much to keep playing.

I also question the mix next year in Bridge. 3 of the D appear to be MacDonald, Katic, and Kohn three really similar guys. It would be nice if they could trade one of those guys for a larger more physical d-man.

  27. avatar db says:

rich m to be honest not many people really care how hot duchene is right now. he did not even make the junior team for canada we cannot stake our #1 pick on a guy that gets hot at the right time on top of that he had 25 less points than tavares. as a 16 year old tavares was 3rd in the league in points at 17 he was second now at 18 he is first he is the cream of the crop and has been the last 2 years. the last time we went after a hot player and shook up our draft. it was in 2000 a young goalie from boston had 72 saves in a game and really started to rise up the draft board so instead of drafting heatley or gaborik we trade luongo and draft dipietro. dont make the same mistake twice but what really scares me is history does tend to repeat itself. draft tavares he will be a superstar. draft duchene he will be a solid two way center.

  28. avatar ALL ISLANDER FANS REVOLT!!! says:

CB, I think its the injuries that need to stop and then we can get a real gauge on things

  29. avatar Bloodyskull says:

This is exactly what I was referring to a few days back when I mentioned that in 2009-10 the isles even with Tavares are still possibly 24th in the league as oppossed to 30th.

  30. avatar christian says:

haha hey 24th is better than 30th it would be a start.

  31. avatar the1gwiz says:

On draft order: among teams that do not make the conference finals, division winners are slotted after non-division winners, no matter when they’re eliminated, in standard reverse points order. So no matter when SJ gets knocked out, if it’s before the conf. finals, the best they can get is the 26th pick, with the 4 conference finalists rounding out the bottom 4 picks.

  32. avatar jack says:

@(32) thanks for the more detailed explanation, i guess i kinda feel a little guilty rooting against san jose this round

  33. avatar DLR says:

Youth movement looks like young boring players vs older boring players. No passion on big squad or Tigers.

  34. avatar Darthziggy says:

I was at the game tonight. The first period was outstanding effort-wise, but it would’ve been nice if they had more than a 1-1 tie to show for their 13-3 shots advantage. Smith looked good, Joensuu showed off some speed throughout, couple of other solid players. After watching him live for an entire game, I have to agree with some others on here that Jon Sim is pretty lackadaisical on the ice (trying to avoid utter bashing). Not the kind of guy we need in our system.
On to the draft prep now, I suppose.

  35. avatar Bryan says:

How unlucky is the Islanders organization? Even when Bridgeport has an awesome season, they barely miss out on the division, end up playing a 100-point team in the first round, and lose in five games. And because the Sound Tigers played their first two games at the Coliseum, the true Bridgeport faithful only got one home playoff game out of this season. That’s really awful.

  36. avatar RichM says:

#28 All I am saying is that Duchene looks great. I wonder if he keeps up his hot play if that has any impact on Snow. It bears watching. It is a good problem to have. I am not knocking Taveras, I think he is the right pick, I am praising Duchene.

  37. avatar RobsIsles says:

I was at the gae tonight, and I got one word for all of you – Disappointing!! We wee outskated, and got physically outplayed. I lost track of the number of times we turned the puck over. The tigers looked more like pussycats. Comeau looked disinterested and appeared to be thinkong about vacation more than the game. Congrats to DiBo on his 1st goal. He again looked like a hidden gem that fell in our lap. With all those draft picks we need to replenish our B Port team because they do not look promising. Maybe 1 or 2 possibilities but they lack speed and size. Anyway, it was tough to watch. Hey, maybe next year.

  38. avatar doc says:

DLR: were you not watching ANY Islander games this year???

    NO PASSION???

Except for the last week or so, about 6 games… this was a very spirited, hard nosed, high effort team almost every night. Despite being severely undermanned due to season long injuries to significant players this Islanders team was fun to watch and pretty exciting.

With that said… they still have a long way to go.

    DOC

  39. avatar JT says:

Lets go DUCKS! Lets have the 26h pick, instead of 30th….we can def turn this pick plus one of the 2nd or 3rds into another top 15! (Also, Go Pens Go)

  40. avatar db says:

last year redline report had filatov @ 2 and we passed on him at 5 meanwhile i believe we took 7 guys from the iss top 30 so im hoping the islanders agree with iss this year and not redline again

  41. avatar Bryan says:

The Islanders let Josh Bailey suffer through a pretty poor rookie season last year. I think we can all agree that the reason he was on the team was to help justify Snow trading down to get him. If Bailey can suffer through a poor season to grow as a player I see no reason not to put Joensuu on the team next year. We dont have any size and he didnt seem way out of place during his short stint last season. Wouldnt it be nice to add a littl size and power in front of the net?

  42. avatar joe says:

Made the trip up to Wilkes-Barre last evening. I was impressed with Jack Hillen, just a pure skater and I thought he played really well. I also thought Comeau did not have one of his better games…same thing with Colliton. As to DiBenedetto, the goal came from a scrum in front. He’s a very smart player, always in position…needs improvement with his skating if he’s going to be effective at the NHL level. The goal that made it 3-1 Dibenedetto wasn’t fast enough to pick the trailer on the play who scored. Overall, I think he has potential because of his smarts and shot, but he really needs work with his skating.

  43. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Man….Some of you guys want everything right away…..Bailey suffered???? He did exactly what I was expecting him to do. Sending him back to Juniors would have hurt. Look at the Windsor team he would of played on. He had a very good season considering what team he was on. Maybe the reason the soundtigers lost this series is maybe they just ran out of gas. Look at how many of them played 5 games in 6 nights, or were playing a little short handed at times and I think it caught up with him. Tavares needs to be the pick. I don’t care who is getting hot or playing better. Windor shadowed him evertime on the ice. They are that could that they could do that. So putting Bailey back on the team would of done what? NOTHING!!!!!!!! JJ will start the season in BPort, but will be here by the middle of the season. These things take time. 1 more year of struggles and then we will be on the rise.

  44. avatar The PolishPrince says:

#44 – Amen! I think Bailey looked like a keeper this seaso. He just needs to add some size and strength. It’s not at all like the Isles rushing Connelly and throwing him into the #1 center role at 18. I think Weight’s presence was a huge help and will continue to be so next year.
One more rough year of no playoffs and onto stage two of the rebuild (possible playoff appearance in ’10-’11).

  45. avatar hockeynut says:

at this pace the rebuild looks like a total bust on of the oldest AHL teams and booted in the 1 round mosy of these players sighned to BP wwere not top prospects in the leagues they played in .aside for some of there draft picks and who knows how the pan out look for another long and losing season on the ISLE.Until they figure out what youth really is GOOD LUCK

  46. avatar Larry says:

Not to make excuses but that was the worst scheduled series ever. The goaltending was putrid at the coliseum

  47. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Rebulid a total bust???? You had 2 100 pt teams playing the 1st round. Alot of the rebuild are/were playing the OHL/WHL and college… This was all stage 1. Stage 2 will be draft Taveras, move up the 1st round for some one else. Have Bailey, KO, Bergs, Neilson all improve from last year. JJ, the Sarnia boys play in Bport. Lawson and Mannino get better. And watch the younger OHL/WHA college kids improve even more. Next year we will be contending for the 8th seed till about the trade deadline. Fall off from there and land a 7-12 1st round pick. Pick up another good player and move on from there.

  48. avatar mw147 says:

Bridgeport could be a very exciting team next year with many more real NHL prospects than they had this year.

Start with Joensuu, DiBenedetto, Katic, Figren, and Marcinko. Add in lesser players who may also be NHL prospects like Hennigar and Andrew MacDonald. And I still like Trevor Smith and think he could be an NHL player. And let’s see if we sign players like Matt Martin or if he goes back to juniors. I assume that college players like Ness and Trivino and Toews will return to college, but we may see them the following season. Plus players we may draft this season.

The Tigers had a tough end to what was a good season, but the prospect pipleline is starting to fill.

  49. avatar hale says:

to post 42…bailey had his ups and down…but i wouldn’t call it a lost season…it was a rookie year…also considering they play different positions i don’t see how jesse replacing him would work…let the kid grow he’ll be fine

  50. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

I cannot honestly judge the BPSTs … never saw a stitch of play. It seems to me for a top tier AHL 100 point team that they gave up way to many goals and even late goals for a typical playoff team.

The players drafted for the re-build are just now going to begin seeping into the AHL … Katic, DiBo & Figren are examples.

I think there is still another year of stocking the prospect pool. This year with the extra picks should help.

I think it may have been difficult for the S’Tigers to have much chemistry with the recent lineup juggling and addition of players with little experience with the system.

  51. avatar Rangers SUCK says:

NO sheet none of the Sound Tigers could play on the island next year, all of their best players are there already, DUH !

  52. avatar hockeynut says:

so you will wait another 3to 4 seasons for th e ISLES to make the playoffs ?Alot of the players from the Ohl WHL NCAA have alot to prove. We will see what is really there will take another season or TWO.Most of them are not top rated prospects so time will only tell ??????????

  53. avatar Chris TMC says:

DLR (34): Most of the kids that came into this organization under the “youth movement” call are not even IN Bridgeport, they are teenagers in college.

And I agree with DOC (39)- There are plenty of justified criticisms regarding this organization but playing passionaless hockey is NOT one of them. I cannot understand why you would come to that conclusion.
