FINAL/OT: BABY PENS 5, SOUND TIGERS 4
Iggulden hurt, Tigers go down 2-0
Written by Kevin Schultz
The news on Mike Iggulden isn’t good. The team is calling it an upper body injury and it’s not likely that he will play tomorrow in W-B/S. “I hope [the league] takes a look at it,” Coach Capuano said during his post-game media session. He went on to say that the hit should be a “suspension since it was a blow to the head and the league is supposed to protect the players.”
That wraps it up for me from NVMC and CB will take the reins back tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who checked in and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
OT, 15:06: A shot from the point goes wide and bounces back off the end boards. Chris Minard is in front for the Penguins and puts it in the net. Penguins win 5-4 and go up 2-0 in the series. Game Three is tomorrow in Pennsylvania… Your three starts in descending order are Chris Minard, Dustin Jeffrey and Kyle Okposo.
End of Regulation: We’re headed for bonus hockey today. Sound Tigers will be on the powerplay for about 80 seconds to start the period with W-B/S’s Lovejoy in the box… Official attendance on the night is 5,903. I lost that bet.
3rd, 12:40: Mike Iggulden has not returned for the third period. Andy Wozniewski scored on a wrister along the ice from the high circle to cut the lead to one… And just as I type that the Baby Pens have tied it up on a goal in transition from Ben Lovejoy.
Second Intermission: Between chuck-a-puck and the gatling t-shirt gun, I can’t say I’ve ever seen so many random flying objects in a hockey arena… With a few minutes to go in the period, Jesse Joensuu gets knocked hard into the boards. The referee immediately signals a penalty for boarding and the first person over to stand up for Joensuu is Kyle Okposo. The only goal of the period came for the Sound Tigers on a 3-on-2. Jack Hillen centered a pass that Jesse Joensuu chipped home and it’s 4-2 Sound Tigers after two.
2nd, 11:49 to go: Mike Iggulden had to be helped off the ice during the first minute of the period after taking a hit along the end boards in the Scranton zone. He looked a bit woozy and has not yet returned to the game.
Attendance seems to be in the same neighborhood as last night. The lower bowl is much more crowded but I would guess the final number is going to be about the same. My money’s on 4,700.
First Intermission: It’s raining goals here in Uniondale! We’re through one period and the Sound Tigers lead by one. They scored the go-ahead goal off of an unecessary penalty by Chris Minard of Wilkes-Barre. He got into some rough stuff after the whistle sounded and that led to a power play goal from Mike Iggulden, the recipient of a nice Trevor Smith centering feed.
Earlier in the period, a penalty by Kyle Okposo led to a Penguins goal from Dustin Jeffrey on what seemed like a second or third rebound. Okposo instantly made up for it by scoring one of his own less than half a minute later.
1st, 9:48 to go: Andrew MacDonald fires a shot from the point, the rebound gets loose in front and after a few whacks at it from Michael Haley and Pascal Morency, Haley is able to put it in the net to tie the game. The goal seems to be a wake up call for the Sound Tigers who looked a bit sluggish to start the game. They immediately have had a few scoring chances after the goal. And to follow all that up, Kyle Okposo heads to the box for hooking.
1st period, 19:30 to go: W-B/S breaks in on a 2-on-1 during their first rush of the game and Paul Bissionette feeds Dustin Jeffrey in front for a goal on the first shot of the game. Probably the worst way for the Sound Tigers to open up after a loss the night before.
The disco ball here at the Coliseum is doing its thing and that means it’s almost time to drop the puck.
Lineups and lines are the same as last night with the exception of Adam Henrich replacing Janne Pesonen for W-B/S. Pesonen is out with an undisclosed injury.

Kevin … next best thing to being there… thanks for the Play-By-Play
Good stuff, Kevin, thanks. Hope Iggy’s alright.
great job kevin.
Joensuu - Tavares - Okposo
hey hey hey!
Hockey Night in Canada during the 2nd intermission reports that Taveras’ agent for at least the second time promised that Taveras would not pull an Eric Lindros. He has no interest in demanding a trade. Good news.
RichM, thank you for the information.
More good news. According to Logan, Tavares’ agent also represents Mark Streit, whom we know would only have great things to say about Long Island should JT ever ask.
The kid is gonna like it here. Most players do. And many stay around after they retire and keep a residence here. He will not be subject to the media circus of a Toronto.
this is great to hear we will love tavares just like he will love it here too
the baby pens play outright dirty, and its getitng just plain out sick.. they take advantage of the fact of the 1 ref system that they can get away with a lot of hits from behind without a fear of it getting seen by the single ref…
they also whine like cindy crosby whenever something isnt going their way… and hte ref is in their pocket jsut like the mother pens.. err whiners..
Butch Goring on Hockey Night Live on MSG proposed a trade:
Islanders 1st overall and 2nd first round pick to Tampa for Lecavalier and 2nd overall pick, whereby Tampa takes Tavares and we take Hedman.
While this might give the Islanders instant credibility, personally I’d rather draft and develop our own potential superstar. I think we can get creative with our second first round pick and multiple 2nd rounders and get a great defense prospect. I love Butchie but I hope Garth and Ryan Jankowski don’t listen to him. Just draft Tavares and move on. Call me crazy.
I
Hathead68:
I totally agree. No time to get creative. Just draft Tavares!!!
Kind of discouraging that Bridgeport can’t win when the team is mostly Isles of next season. Vinny and Hedman? That is the first I would consider of all the stupidity but that won’t happen.
The Sound Tigers should have played where they always play, no need to play at the coliseum. I have no idea where they play, living in San Diego now but seems like they might have done better in whatever smaller rink they are used to, not an empty coliseum.
they couldnt play in bport b/c the company who runs the building broke their contract and refused to give them their weekend game date openings, and instead allowed a show to have a long weekend there…
I was wondering when I would see the first Tavares jersey………… well I bumped into a friend of mine SAL and yes he had the 91 Tavares jersey. Hopefully that did not jinx it!
i am a vey young islander fan i am 15 so you know i dont have those great memories to hold too but i stuck through this team all the year’s and to me this is the most important thing for me that i have seen to happen to the islanders this can change the franchise forever now im hoping and praying evrey dam day we draft tavares and there isnt a hour that goes by im thinking whats up with tavares but idk guys i just got that gut feeling we are either gonna make this or break this i dont think snow will trade this pick he is smart and knows we need tavares and this pick but what do you guys think is snow gonna trade this or not draft tavares or will he give the fans a gift and draft tavares?
There are 3 things the Isles must have: 1) Tavares 2) the Lighthouse 3) a healthy DP.
This is our time! This is our moment! GO ISLES
There are only a few players on BPort who will actually play for the Islanders…
Callahan, Hillen, KO, Smith, and Joneseau.
The rest of them are AHL players for ever…Lawson even showed he is a little weak in goal…
Fact: Lawson gives up softer goals than Danis.
dont know if it has been mentioned… but talk about grit for playoffs… JT scored two straight goals to take the game to overtime for the london knights win to tie the series.

I hope Iggy is OK. He was pretty dazed by that hit, and noting was done about it.
Other than that (and losing in OT) I had a really good time at this game tonight. Every intermission we kept meeting up with this RedWings fan and his Rangers fan friend (neither of whom were the slightest bit obnoxious!) IT was beautiful outside and it was a lot of fun talking to them both. The RW fan is a DiPi fan and was wishing him well for next season. When I mentioned how a lot of Isles fans give him **** he laughed and said the RWs would be happy to take him off our hands. One thing Ill say- he had no idea that the Isles were injured a lot this season and he seemed pretty blown away when I told him about the ~580 mangames lost to injury and 20 guys who have played for both Bridgeport and the NYI this season. I think that other than our own fans few people realized how insanely injured this team has been.
Hey CB- is there any way to know the record of mangames lost to injury in a season? I dont know of any team in recent history who has dealt with the amount of injuries the Isles have dealt with!
#12…mostly Isles of next season? Okposo is THE ONLY ONE with sure spot. Joensuu and Hillen close, Smith maybe - and that’s it.
Chris TMC (20) … to answer your question … 580 man games lost to injury is now the NEW record … I don’t know what the old record was … but the Isles past that a while back.

hathead (10) Butchie has had it for Hedman since the WJC … I don’t understand why … especially since as Butchie once put it that he had only seen him play on TV at the WJC and hadn’t seen anything other than clips … to me the WJC didn’t show anything special about Hedman … and we all know what JT did at the WJC … My brother thinks it’s because our one time playoff hero and Conn Smythe winner doesn’t want anyone else to wear his #91 … hmmmmmm mayybeeee
The clutch of John Tavares so far that I’ve seen shows me that he’s got the knack for turning it up a notch when the chips are down. We need that on the Isles…
That said … I see the Isles as a bottom 5 next season too … JT (if drafted) will do well … he might even get 25 goals … but that isn’t going to vault the Isles out of the bottom 5 … and if we draft Hedman instead … he also isn’t going to be able to vault the Isles out of the bottom 5 … so we have to manage our expectations for next season as well … look how long it is took the Blues & Hawks to get out of the bottom of the pack. LA almost got out … we may be out after next season .. I hope … only year 2 of the rebuild.
Well, I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree as far as our AHL affiliate goes. Physically pushed around. Soft goals. Where have we seen that before?
Attendance was 5700? They must have included the roaches.
Eww, thats gross. And not particularly funny, either.
19 ISLE in NJ 22 (22): Yeah I had a feeling it would be. Its a hard stat about which to find reliable data since it is not really an official posted number.
It hit me when I was talking to that RW fan. He gave us credit for loving a team that cant make the playoffs. He was being sincere when he said that. I explained that the Isles missed the playoffs in part because they led the league with injuries for the last two seasons- and when they DIDNT lead the entire league with injuries, they made the playoffs in all all but one season since 01-02. The guy was genuinely surprised by that, which I really found interesting.
Id say attendance was closer to 3000 then 4000
I wonder what all of the AHL teams playoff attendances are so far? I think that some of you might be surprised at normal AHL attendance.
fact without lawson the sound tigers would be playing golf already..was he average..yes…was he the only problem no…i am just happy i can see the boys in our arena, i did not enjoy the whole experience
