CORRECTION: CBC REPORT INACCURATE
Scott Gordon will assist at World Championships

by admin on April 6th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

REVISED, 5:25 pm - I finally was able to check on the CBC report about Scott Gordon being named an assistant coach on Ron Wilson’s staff for Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The report - it’s in the first minute of this video - is incorrect.

Here’s where the confusion might have happened. According to my source, Gordon will be an assistant at the World Championships that begin in a few weeks in Switzerland.

maybe kyle will make team usa then…

pretty good honor for mr gordon….

  2. avatar Will C says:

Congrats Gordo! Vets seem to not be entirely fond of Gordo, so this will be a good experience for him to learn on a vet packed roster.

  3. avatar mt275 says:

My feeling is that U.S. will put together a young team. Flash Gordon is perfect for it.

  4. avatar Chris TMC says:

This is an honor for Gordon, thats really nice to hear.

Will C(2): I have seen people repeat this but tell me- says who? What vet has said anyhting negative about coach Gordon? I think this seems to be like the “Kyle Okposo was drafted by NS” thing- people tend to repeat that it happened, but there is never anything to back it up.

  5. avatar Will OC says:

awesome for the Isles and for Gordon. Good to see that this guy is already getting positive recognition around the rest of the league even though he’s coaching the worst team

  6. avatar bergie20 says:

congrats gordo!!! great news for him and the isles.

  7. avatar John says:

This will only benefit Gordon in the long run as Wilson has as a strong coaching pedigree.

  8. avatar kevin fitz says:

    Congrats!

  9. avatar Ryan says:

It’ll be interesting seeing how Gordon and Wilson’s styles mesh. This is probably the clearest indicator that Wilson and Burke are serious when they say they want their team to be up-tempo and aggressive.

  10. avatar blitz says:

    (9) and Lavy and Torts play the trap???

  11. avatar Mike says:

I hope KO will make it but doubt it because he only would as 3rd or 4th liner and they would probably want some scrappy guys

  12. avatar nystrom23 says:

    Big congrats gordo!!

  13. avatar kevin fitz says:

KO is definitely going to be on the team. Who are the top young American forwards? Kane, Parise, Gionta and now I am at a loss for anyone else. Tkachuck is not making this team over KO.

  14. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

Great honor for Scott – congrats!

  15. avatar trippstar22 says:

Gionta, really? and i heard NS actually say he drafted KO!

  16. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

    Congrats Flash

  17. avatar Will OC says:

13- Brown, Booth, Kessel, Backes, Pominville, O’Sullivan. Not really superstars yet or possibly ever, but will be a competitive group of fowards for years to come for team U.S.A.

Team USA’s defense will be a weakness. Not that players like Rafalski, Martin, Liles, etc. are bad, but their problem is they just don’t stack up well against the rest of the major competitive team’s defenses.

DiPi is probably 3rd string behind Thomas and Miller after this season.

  18. avatar Johnny Islander says:

Kevin (13)Drury, Dustin Brown, Phil Kessel, Langenbrunner, and Bob Ryan are probably locks

Gomez is a possibility. Hopefully they move on from the Mike Modano types. He gave his all to USA hockey for a long time, but it’s time to get younger.

There are players out there, but KO has a very good shot IMO

Props to Pierre LeBrun for picking Gordon for USA Hockey back in Feb.

  19. avatar Mike from Philly says:

    Way to go Scott Gordon!

  20. avatar Pat says:

way to go FLASH GORDON !!!

This is good stuff. Gordon is starting to come around and we will benefit.

  21. avatar Priest says:

I can’t watch the video (at work) is this just for the Olympics, or the upcoming World Championships as well? Or will we have to wait for CB to do some digging?

  22. avatar bonzo says:

What does this show all the gordon naysayers…you were wrong. Boobs.

  23. avatar Coach B says:

From one coach to another cangrats Scott. Little by little, good things are happening with the Islanders.

  24. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

WIlson came out in the beginning of the season and said that this USA team will look much different. Good. It is time for a change. This could be a reason why Gordon was selected…

Maybe KO can make a case for himself… I sure do hope so.
Congrats to Gordon. As many of you guys want his head in plenty of situations… he was brought in here to do one thing and he is doing it well. Development. So far, so good.

  25. avatar Johnny Islander says:

Will (17) I agree that DP is probably #3 right now, if he hasn’t fallen below that already.

I’m thinking that if DP returns at 100%, he will be very well aware of his status with Team USA and will be doing his best to prove he should be #1. We could see a very motivated Goalie come the start of the 09-10 season.

  26. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

congrat coach Gordon. Just some notes. KO on list to selected and probably on roster whether gordon assist coach or not.

DP is the one that wont make team and should concentrate on being healthy for his employer.
Mark Streit would probably be captain of Switzerland and he is not 100% willing to play if he not healthy.

If DP back and healthy for us next year. Isles are playoff bound.

  27. avatar mattyboy says:

See? I’m not just a pretty face and an orange bow tie… THIS…IS…THE USHERNATOR!!!!!!

In other news, I hope Ricky is healthy and playing well enough to make his inclusion a hot topic for us come next winter… Hard to ask him not to play but I’m sure there will be those that debate whether or not he should gracefully decline the potential invitation citing his prior health issues and his commitment to be fresh for the NYI 2nd half. (Worms in Can… YOU’RE FREE!)

  28. avatar Priest says:

Hopefully Dipi is back healthy and makes the team… when he came back in ’06 was by far the best I’ve ever seen him play. He got pumped for the Olympics and carried that high into his play for the Isles. Hopefully the same thing happens, all year long next year. Starting with him proving himself and then carrying the momentum of a silver medal* the rest of the way

*I’m Canadian, and there is absolutely no way I’m gunna bet against my country. :p

  29. avatar mt275 says:

For defense, Komisarek, Ryan Suter, Rafalski, Liles, Jack Johnson.. That’s a pretty good lineup.

  30. avatar Will C says:

    Chris TMC:

Guerin clearly did not have a good relationship with Gordo, Witt’s has been rocky, Comrie didn’t either. I think Comrie was just a bad fit, but Gordo is learnig how to deal with vets. To answer your questions, Vets don’t come out and say that stuff because they are vets and aren’t doing the laundry in public.

  31. avatar Scott S. from Long Beach says:

Wow. If I were building a coaching staff I’d absolutely choose the head coach who own the league’s worst record as one of my assistants.

  32. avatar 7th Woman says:

That is FABULOUS news!!! Perfect! now… can we get Kyle on the team?

  33. avatar Tim Geithner says:

Looks like lowest-performing, league-loss leading, ref-blaming, last place hockey coach, Scott Gordon, will be bringing his winning ways to the US Olympic hockey team in 2010.

Oh well, maybe our Curling team can bring home a medal for us.

  34. avatar Chris TMC says:

Will C: No vet has said anything negative about him- that is the point. The most “negative” thing (and I dont necessarily think it was negative) was what Witt said and he made a point of coming out and refuting your idea. You say how vets dont come out and say such things, but you also imply that you just happen to know that is secretly how they all felt? That just doesnt fly with me and your examples dont cut it. Unless someone DID say something somewhere, your “Vets dont like Gordon” statement is
nothing but gossip/speculation… and really isnt worth people repeating again and again and again. But, like all the other gossip, Im sure it will be repeated ad nauseum, anyway lol.

  35. avatar isles316 says:

Good work Tim. Obviously you follow this team.

  36. avatar Will C says:

Chris: if you recall Gordo himself said that Billy and he had a strained relationship, but they had “worked it out.”

  37. avatar Johnny Islander says:

It’s pretty apparent that Gordon didn’t, or does not, mesh well with certain vets.

I don’t think you’ll be able to find a quote from any hockey player saying that to the public… Does that matter?

Go argue on Islandermania, this is about the Gordon and Team USA.

  38. avatar nyislanders93 says:

Team USA forwards will probably look something like this-
    Parise-Pavelski-Kane
    Blake-Gomez-Ryan
    Brown-Kesler-Langenbrunner
    Booth-Weight-Gionta

Other possible players to make it would be Okposo, Backes, Guerin, Drury, Wheeler, Modano, Tkachuk, etc.

  39. avatar King says:

You just answered your own arguement lol….He worked it out…doesn’t mean every other vet hates him and just because Witt called him out doesn’t mean he hates the guy. That’s the bussiness of hockey,

  40. avatar mtrico says:

Well, coaching at the World Championships is not the same as the Olympics, but it can’t hurt Gordon’s development as a coach.

  41. avatar will c says:

no one is saying vets hate him. as I stated earlier he has had a difficult time learning how to deal with some vets. if you got a new job and were the boss of guys older than you that probably have way more experience in the field, there is a learning curve to build a relationship. I’m sure he will be fine and even at the WC’s he will get some time with some high profile vets that should help.

  42. avatar Pez says:

42 im pretty sure gordons 53 or around there so i doubt MOST ppl in the NHL will be older than him or any at all

  43. avatar MT says:

That makes more sense, but still a good thing for Gordo. Usa!

  44. avatar greg says:

If hes 53, thats some make up hes got on there. Doesn’t even look close to 50. I would say 40 tops.

  45. avatar greg says:

    Well 46 to be correct.

  46. avatar Will C says:

Dougie Weight was close. I hope we sign him up for next year. Who is head coach for WC?

  47. avatar Chris TMC says:

37 Will C: Even if that is true (and Im not saying youre wrong, it might be- though I dont see this quote youre speaking of anywhere) I still dont see how a situation with one person necessarily leads to the leap of vets in general having a problem with a coach. I wish you could see that Im not saying things are either way, Im saying that we do not have the information to make such a statement either way. There is a difference.

So… Gordon will be an assistant at the World Championships? That is still an honor and Im happy for him. :D

  48. avatar Chris TMC says:

Will C (42): I see what youre saying here. I just think that Gordons learning curve was/is/has been not so much a dealing with vets thing but rather him adjusting to the NHL in general.

  49. avatar jonw says:

chris tmc (49) Is having a meeting excluding the vets,a way to adjust to the nhl?
There is an obvious problem betweem Gordon and Sim.
There was a difference of opinion between Witt and Gordon.
I don’t agree or disagree with your stance on the matter. That being said I don’t know what went wrong, but the relationship between some of the players and the coach was strained.

  50. avatar Chris TMC says:

My guess is that players with diminishing ice time and less of a pivotal role on a team are not happy… whether they are vets or not. I think that was the key more than anything else.

As far as that meeting thing went, I remember Gordon saying that was overstated- he was simply having a meeting with rookies and kids so that the vets were not bored hearing things they already knew. It wasnt like it was some super-secret club meeting or something lol.

  51. avatar jonw says:

Your guess?the kids were not getting a diminshing role, the vets were and that was willc ‘s point.
    super secret club meeting huh?
So a rookie head coach was having a meeting with his team less then half way through the season and figured the vets didn’t need to come because he didn’t want to bore them?lol

  52. avatar Chris TMC says:

I find your post confusing. First off I said it was NOT like it was some super-secret club meeting. And yes, I do think a rookie head coach was having a meeting less then half way through the season and figured the vets didn’t need to come because he didn’t want to bore them- but that is not my personal speculation, I think that is what happened because that is what Gordon said. I have no personal need to extrapolate or read into a meeting or make further assumptions about it, and I honestly dont see what is “lol” about that.

  53. avatar Steve says:

There were problems between Witt, Guerin, Sim, Campoli and Gordon. What is so hard to understand?

  54. avatar Chris TMC says:

Steve- Witt has stated that he does not and has not had a problem with the coach, he was frustrated with how things were going defensively. Thats Witts own clarifications right there. And Campoli is NOT a vet, so that does not support this vet theory.

Regardless- you think that unspoken presumed “problems” with Guerin and Sim imply some inherent problem with vets and good for you. I dont see how this is necessarily true. I never even said he was NOT TRUE, I just said that there is no evidence of it to assume and make bold sweeping statements about the way the coach is with Vets. I can just as easily point to more vets than you have who have emphatically stated their approval of the way Gordon has handled things. Fact is, what you are pointing to is just as likely to have been caused, as I said, because of diminishing ice time/roles. It is another possibility, and was pointed out NOT as a sweeping statement but simply AS a possibility. You youself can think whatever you want, believe you know exactly whats what, go ahead- I however am not going to buy into extrapolations and assumptions and call them facts. What is so hard about THAT for YOU to understand? Sheesh.

  55. avatar Steve says:

    Metal Chick,
Ummm…Witt did speak out against the system. Campoli has been in the league for 4 years, he is a vet. Others here have stated the same things that I have said. But you just continue to tell yourself it is not true. lol!!
The articles about Gordon’s problems with some vets where clear enough for most people to understand.

  56. avatar Chris TMC says:

As I said yesterday, he spoke out about the way things were going defensively… and the coach respected what he said, listened to him, made adjustments, and Witt said that was what he wanted. But you just continue to tell yourself that didnt happen. You base your opinions on speculating gossip from articles, and I dont. The fact that you tell me to ” continue to tell yourself it is not true” proves that my response to you did not sink in. Please reread (or read) my response right above regarding sweeping statements vs what is presented as a possibility… if you still dont understand what I said I guess thats that, because there is no clearer way of explaining. you will continue to dream up that I am “tell yourself it is not true” because no amount of explaining can make someone understand what they refuse to let sink in. Have a nice day!

  57. avatar Johnny Islander says:

Isn’t there a posting limit per topic?

  58. avatar jonw says:

    that’s exactly my point tmc
