IF THE SHARKS LOSE TO THE DUCKS…
…or in the second round, the Islanders pick 26th
If Jonas Hiller and the Anaheim Ducks defeat the San Jose Sharks tonight or in Game 6 or Game 7, the Islanders’ second first round pick in June will be the 26th overall selection.
This is official, set in stone, gospel according to the National Hockey League. The draft seeding works like this, as per an email we received late last night for clarification – once and for all – on the subject:
30th overall draft pick - Stanley Cup winner
29th - Stanley Cup finalist
28th - Conference final runner-up
27th - Conference final runner-up
26th - Regular season division-winning clubs eliminated at any point in the first two rounds of the playoffs, in inverse order of points
The Islanders acquired the first round pick from Ottawa, which acquired it from San Jose. The Islanders traded Chris Campoli and Mike Comrie for the pick and Dean McAmmond. The San Jose Sharks won their division and had the most points in the entire league.
If the Sharks lose in the first round to Anaheim or in the second round, the Islanders will be the owner of the 26th overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Should the Sharks lose in the first round to Anaheim or in the second round, we can begin the needle-in-the-haystack process of trying to figure out which prospect the Islanders get with the pick. There’s also the chance of Garth Snow trading up to somewhere in the 15-20 range if one of the top players on Ryan Jankowski’s draft board is still around.

if there was some way we could move up to take cowen that would really help out d out
-
And now…let’s go Penguins! Stop screwing around! Get us that third round pick for Guerin!
-
now we hopefully will not waste anymore time on this subject….I also hope we can take tavares and trade some of these extra picks to move up….it has to be possible somehow
-
Thanks for the clarification.
-
Thanks, CB.
So as far as the *Guerin Pick*: It is maxed-out at a Third Round Pick (assuming they beat Philly and move on )no matter how far the Penguins go, right? -
#6 correct. Max 3rd rounder
-
so the trade was pretty much Chris Campoli for the # 26 pick.(assuming the Ducks beat the Sharks) not bad at all. I would love to see them trade up and somehow land shutdown blue liner Jared Cowen.
-
Guerin has done so well for the Penguins. I wish we could have somehow made the agreement where it started as a fourth and worked down to a second. I’d be much happier with that pattern rather than it being a third rounder at best. The good thing though is that with so many picks, maybe we can take another flyer like we did with Kirill Petrov last year. Granted he isn’t doing very well lately, we can all hope that he continues to develop to his full potential.
-
Well the amazing thing about THE draft or A draft is that when you look around, beyond the obvious #1 draft pick Superstars, etc., most succesful teams are the ones that have the 2-7 round players that turned into great everyday players. Amazing when you look at The Red Wings and Bruins’ roster for instance. Granted both teams revolve around Superstar D-Men (Lidstrom and Chara…oh, Chara…incredible and depressing watching what that guy has become…Wow!) but their core teams are made-up of later round Gems.
-
To #8 Justin–Good point w/ Kiril Petrov(who btw ended his injury plagued terrible season w/ 2 very good performances at Int’l tournaments.).Red Line Report rated Petrov the 8th best player in last yrs draft.(ahead of Bailey). I think he will be a draft steal. This years “Kiril Petrov” is Zach Budish 6’4 230 can skate, great hands, plays physical but blew out his knee in December and instead of being a top 10 pick should be available at #26(if Anaheim helps us out)..
-
use the pick as part of an offer to boston for tuukka rask
-
Who else thinks we nrd to take a golie with that late round pick.we hace no gpd golie prospects!!
-
I agree that we should look at drafting a top goalie prospect, if there’s a prospect that Garth and Ryan are enamored with. But, to be clear, whether they use the SJ first rounder on a goalie depends on where they project their favored goalie prospect will be selected. If the goalie they most want to draft is projected to be selected in the third round, why use a first round pick on him?
-
Yep. They very much have to draft a goalie at some point this year.
# 11, I agree, Rask looks real good (and you know Gordon is familier with him!) but I believe that he will be backing up Thomas next year and prolly Fernandez will be gone. With Snow, Gordon and Dunham being ex-goalies, we must assume that they have an *inside* edge at drafting a great goalie? Right? Hmmmm…one would think.
Go Isles! -
quick question hodgson and duchene are on separate lines correct. does anyone know who the #1 line is because we all know tavares is on the #1 line and he is blanketed every game by opposing teams best defense. if hodgson is the #1 center and duchene is #2 then the best d will be on when hodgson line is on the ice. i cant see hodgson not on the #1 line as he is 19 and made the canadian junior team. if duchene is the #2 center it would cement tavares as my choice for the #1 pick. dont get cute snow. anyone know the answer to my question?

We need the Pens to win this round, and lose the next round. Since they would fall into the 87-90th pick in that round for making it to the final four. If they lose it’s more like 78-79. Guess not much of a difference but closer is better.
-
Actually that pick would be 83. Just checked it. So not much of a difference if the lose n the semis.
-
I don’t want a goalie until the 59th or 62nd pick(if the right G slips)..Between Matt Hackett(Jeff’s nephew), Olivier Roy(no relation to Patrick), Scott Stajcer, Edward Pasquale, Jaroslav Janus, Michael Zador, Mikko Koskinen(6’5 187), Robin Lehner(6’3 220) there are 8 goalies that could go between 24th overall to 120th overall. If one of them slips to the 3rd rd that we really like than fine.. But both Danis & MacDonald won Defensive Player of the Month awards last yr..5th rd Kevin Poulin is a good prospect. Back in June 2007 Red Line Report rated Poulin the 6th best player in the Entire Draft! So he has potential. Also 06′ 6th rd Stefan Ridderwall is a very good prospect. Thats 4 good young Goalies(not counting DiPi) so to spend the possible 26th, 31st or 37th overall on taking a flyer on a goalie is crazy. Also you can get a very good goalie in a trade or UFA. Goalies never have high trade value(see Roberto Luongo-both times)
-
I agree with you here CB about moving up if only there is a player the Isles brass likes in the 15-20 range if the sharks bow out.I think Cowen will go top 10 and might cost too much.I would much rather see where Jordan Schroeder,Zach Kassian and Carter Ashton are before making a move on a D man.Considering Hedman as the best available and Cowen the next closest to him. I believe there is better talent at the foward position in the 10-20 range then the defense position.
If Lee is off the board I would like to see the Isles take flyer on Mikko Koskinen with one of their 3rd or 4th round picks. The guy was passed over in last years draft and could be worth taking a look at with one of the extra picks.Might be projected in the 92-102 range,so the Guerin trade could help them out a bit. -
We are in good shape with the number of picks we have in a deep draft. Snow did a good job getting these extra picks, so I trust him in drafting the right players.
-
#15 Duchene is on the second line for his Brampton team.
-
thank you mr botta
-
Go Ducks! If they knock out the Sharks, I’ll root for a Caps/Ducks final.
-
I’d prefer at this stage to get a goalie in round 2 or 3. In this years draft there is no clear cut favorite amongst the goalies so the quality in rounds 2 and 3 will be close or the same but they should draft a goalie high this year.
The two first rounders need to be on guys who can make an impact on the ice this year or next.
Other then the obvious big two I’d like to see the Isles look at Kassian, Caron, Cowen in first round. Caron is the only one who would be there at 26.
-
I think the Isles should use a later round pick on a goalie but not the first round pick. Use the late first round pick(if not packaged to move up for an earlier pick) to draft the best player available. I can also see the Isles drafting based on who they draft first…meaning if they draft Tavares first then I can see them using the other first round pick to draft a defensemen and vice versa.
-
#15, I was at the game last night and Hodgson is on the first line with Gratchev and Peluso. Duchesne was on the second line and had a hat trick. He was flying out there. It would have been nice if London made the final that way I could have watched Duchesne and Tavares go head to head
-
If the Ducks and Penguins both win tonight, it could turn out to be a very nice weekend for us.
-
so tired of hearing about Duschene. Tavares is the pick, who cares about Duschene he will probably go to the Avalanche and we will see him once a year. Stay the course over analysis will only lead to a poor descision IMO. I still think Tavares is a no-brainer and then after make the package to trade down in the first for a d-man.
-
ok so i know where we would pick if San Jose looses, but where in the third round will we pick if Pitt wins tonight?
-
I guess we are depending on two birds to settle our whole draft order lineup … The Ducks and the Penguins …
Islander505, NickClassic and myself have said since last summer on Loggies Blog … that even more important than the 1st round (gimmie pick) … who the Isles draft from round 2 on are crucial … those picks will make up the beef of the Isles talent pool … they’ll be either good NHL players, bargaining chips or career minor leaguers.
-
I don’t think the Isles can afford to move those second rounders to move up in the first. They need every single pick they can get.
This draft we get a pick, first overall, to help us in the now. The late first might even fit that same category.
Just hold onto the second rounders and see what you can get. It’s obvious that there isn’t much in Bridgeport to help us out right now.
We have #1 and #7 in the second round. You can still grab some decent players with those.
-
What are the chances of packaging the 26th pick and a 2nd round pick for Patrick Marleau? We all know that San Jose will be broken up after they lose again.
-
I think they will package either 2nd and/or 3rd round picks with the 26th overall to move up. From what I’ve read numbers 20-60 are wide open.. Different teams have kids all over the place.
-
chickendirt – i completely agree. i think it’s a mistake to move up from 26. this is a very deep draft and there will still be excellent talent to pick from there and in the second round. i want the isles to hold onto all of their 2nd rounders. i don’t think there’s a significant difference in talent between the mid first round and 26. isles have a lot of holes to fill so hold onto the picks and fill those holes.
-
Keep the picks. Pick the best player available. Repeat. Snow and Jankowski have their work cut out for them….
-
Yay, Draft Pick!
-
yes we just made that a third rounder
-
Thank you Pit for the 3rd round pick.
-
Tavares
-
im with you #38….DRAFT TAVARES
-
Picking 26th versus 27-30 is a BIG difference. Let’s go Ducks… close ‘em out and complete a great day for NYI.
Pitt’s win sealed a 3rd round for Billy G. 26th overall would be a VERY nice addition.
-
3rd round pick from Pens!
-
I would keep the picks and not trade up. I’ve been following this upcoming draft very closely, and it’s probably the deepest ever. No one looked out of place at the prospects game, and that’s the 40 best CHL players. Tavares, top ranked goalie, and a couple of big defensmen, and then just try to go for homeruns with the remaining picks. That’s what I would do.
-
Nice, now I don’t have to root for Pit anymore.
C’mon Ana, let’s finish the job tonight.
-
Let’s go ducks!!!! Man who would’ve thought we would have so much fun with this even though we were pretty bad.
-
#33, I love that idea:
“What are the chances of packaging the 26th pick and a 2nd round pick for Patrick Marleau?”
Chris, assume the Sharks do go out early and Marleau were available. What would he cost in your opinion and why wouldnt the Isles be interested ?
-
If the Sharks are willing to part with Marleau, I would love nothing more if he came at a reasonable price. He’d be the offensive Streit of this team and the veteran leader (along with Weight) into the future.
-
I really don’t think the Sharks are going to keep that nucleus together if they lose early again. If Snow keeps every pick I couldn’t argue either but Marleau will probably be the first one out of there. He has one year left at 6.3 million and the Islanders are one of the only teams that can take on that salary.
-
the 26th pick and a second round pick is probably not enough however to land him.
-
Everything is coming up smiles for the Islanders as far as where their picks will be in the draft (Assuming Ducks can hold on).
Anyone else concerned? LOL
-
I think moving up to take a higher-rated prospect would be the best move for this particular draft. Last year was the “accumulate prospects” draft since the cupboard was stripped bare, and this year should be trying to get 2 thoroughbreds to add to the stable. However, 19 Isles is right, and I did have that conversation with him…the later-round players are the keys to any draft, since they are the ones who will have to round out your NHL and AHL rosters, or they will be the ones you use in future trades.
This is a different year in the rebuilding plan, and it should not be the same idea going into draft day. Last year we needed quantity, this year we need quality.
As for the goaltenders, as I mentioned in another thread – if you want a young goaltender, keep an eye on Kieran Millan from BU. He was undrafted last year and it took him a few games to win the starting job, but he won some huge games for us down the stretch en route to the national title. He’ll stay in school at least 2 more years so there’s no rushing him. Might be a good fit here.
-
Hi Chris,
Many thanks for the info. You’re the best !
-
With regard to San Jose’s first rounder, I’d cheer for the Ducks, but the early elimination of the Sharks guts my Playoff Pool team, so…..
We now all want to cheer for Pittsburgh to lose in the second round. Remember, if they get to the conference final, they pick in 27th place in each round, (at best and assuming they are the lowest point total of the four conference finalists), so they would have the 88th pick, if I am right: 30 first rounders, 30 second rounders, 26 ahead of them in the third, plus the Rangers’ comensatory pick for the loss of Cherapanov.
If they lose in the second round, they are 23rd or 24th, depending on whethr Anaheim makes it to the Conference Finals. All that math to realize it really doesn’t matter much. Hmmmm.

Thanks for clearing that up, CB. Seems like it was a lot of confusion on the subject here. So, get to work Snow and Jank.
