KATE MURRAY FALLS ON HER SWORD
Scraps fraudulent plans for stimulus petition

Kate Murray and the Town of Hempstead have flip-flopped from their three-day-old master plan petitioning Long Islanders to call on Tom Suozzi to ask for stimulus funds to renovate the NVMC. While the link still exists, Murray’s message is off the TOH website.

The proposed mailer to all TOH residents - using taxpayer money - has also been scrapped.

While it’s a moderate victory for the Lighthouse Project, the stink from Murray’s grand failure may linger a while.

Why did Supervisor Murray end The Lights-Out Project? Three reasons:

1. Long Islanders and Islanders fans ignored the petition and instead pounded the Town of Hempstead with emails and phone calls (516.489.5000) of support for the developers.

2. The members of the highly influential editorial board at Newsday not only crucified Murray’s ploy, they made fun of it.

3. Unlike most of the rest of the planet, Kate Murray - and the brainiacs pulling her strings - apparently didn’t know Obama Bucks were not available for the renovation of an arena. Scary.

What’s next? There’s no time for anyone, especially the developers and Suozzi, to revel in Murray’s humiliation. On Monday, everyone goes back to work and tries to complete the Lighthouse Project. Whether you are for or against the project, continue to let your voice be heard.

When will we the people vote out people like Kate Murray? If we do not then we have no right to complain that the Islanders are playing in Queens. Let your voice be heard.

I’m guessing that as CB said, the TOH got pounded with calls and emails about this “stimulus for the NVMC” plan. I know I called and emailed. I wonder what the braintrust or lack thereof in the TOH has up their sleeve next to try and derail the LH project?!

  3. 3 mike

kate is going to be for the light house very soon she is starting to see she cant win this

  4. 4 The Real Vukota

This is great. The people are starting to be heard. Let’s keep it up boys!!!!

  5. 5 IslesFanInBkNY

    Take that Kate!
    Let there be Lighthouse!

  6. 6 JayK

In case she didn’t know already, I emailed Eden Laikin of Newsday about this. Hopefully, there will be a story tomorrow or Tuesday about this latest development.

I am only mildly more optimistic, but as I’ve said before, I think Kate keeps waiting for the formation of “Concerned Long Islanders Against the Lighthouse.” Every day that goes by confuses her. “Where is the usual NIMBY opposition on this?” she asks herself. And it doesn’t appear.

  7. 7 NYI FAN

Well, it might not have been a bad idea if there was stimulus money available. I know, it is taxpayer money, but do you honestly think that the LH is not going to be funded in anyway by taxpayers? Of course it will be. Tax breaks will be the the norm, plus the county & maybe the town will have to pay for sewers, water to the site, road improvements, etc, where do you think that will come from. Don’t let Wang & Rechler force feed isles fans thru Orange & Blue sunglasses, this will cost taxpayers something. It always does.
Do not get me wrong, I love the Isles, I just do not see the LH as a good thing for the county. JMHO, that’s all.

I called the Town when this was being sent out and I told them what I had been hearing about Kate Murrays plan but that it must have been a joke. The girl I spoke to said it was not, I was like Ohhh Ok….seriously?? I guess I was wrong. Then i said “I wish it was a joke..Federal Funding..Really?” She was like, um..Yup. I could tell by her tone that people were pounding them. GOOD!!

  9. 9 Coach B

Keep the pressure up. Don’t give the “opposition” a chance to breathe.

  10. 10 Sean

I agree Kate is suddenly going to be pro lighthouse very soon. She is a snake.

  11. 11 Rex

    I have a question.

I am a supporter of the Lighthouse and IF it ever gets through it will be because of public outcry & such forcing obvious political opposition to change it’s stance.

My question is this should we do it, will Charles Wang then turn around and hit those same people with crazy PSL’s & drive the ticket prices up etc? Like the Jets and Giants have done to offset their “privately funded” stadium?

Has he said anything at all about this?

    CB? Anyone know?

    3. Unlike most of the rest of the planet, Kate Murray - and the brainiacs pulling her strings - apparently didn’t know Obama Bucks were not available for the renovation of an arena. Scary.

this is hilarious. i almost fell off my chair. following the exploits of katie and the slugs has become like watching the three stooges and abbott and costello after school.

  13. 13 alex

yes, this is a mild victory, but we can’t stop here. If anything now is the time to strike! Keep hammering the phone lines, let them know that now they have pushed us too far and better surrender and get on bored with this thing. The worst thing we could do is stop calling/ e- mailing the TOH! LET THERE BE LIGHTHOUSE!!!!

  14. 14 Big Dog

If the Yankees and Mets couldn’t swing PSLs with their new homes, there is NO CHANCE the Islanders will even try. PSLs only work when there is a 10+ year waitlist for season tickets. I don’t think the Isles have that problem.

  15. 15 d-man

NYI FAN: renovating the nvmc leads to a few jobs and tht’s it. done. the LH project leads to massive amount of jobs… temp and permanent… there’s a big difference.

REX: i read here wang getting hammered for offering deals 2 years in advance, free round of playoffs, parking, frozen rates and now gets hammered for an assumed rate increase… sometime in the future? jesus of all jesuses… let the guy breathe for a minute. can’t you wait to complain about the price increase in… what? 2014?

  16. 16 Rex

    #15

I wasn’t hammering him in the least, i asked if he’s said anything about it, settle down my man, your gonna have a heart attack.

I’m pro lighthouse always have been

  17. 17 d-man

hearts just fine… question is still out there… can’t you wait to complain about a future rate increase? at least until they move or the LH is built

  18. 18 slsangus

The Town of Hempstead Republican machine actually realizes it made a mistake?

Hmmm… only 6 more signs to the Apocalypse, I guess.

  19. 19 beatlebailey

love it - i called the TOH as a concerned federal taxpayer voicing my disgust at a lame money grab for my tax dollars. And yes of course there will be some tax benefits to Wang and maybe some taxpayer funded infrastructure as part of the LH but that is the way business is done everywhere. Half the business in NYC including what is left of wall street would be across the hudson if NYC did not give businesses incentives (tax breaks) to either stay or build.

  20. 20 Booten

This is a step in the right direction, don’t let up people…be heard!

  21. 21 Dorfer81

Was at Citi Field today for the first time. Holy awesomeness. The Isles need to move in next door.

  22. 22 Brooks Simpson

Kate Murray’s political career is now shovel-ready.

    Dig in!

  23. 23 Rex

    #17

Let me say this clearly i am NOT complaining about anything i just asked has he said anything about PSL’s. “Jesus of Jesus” that’s all i did everyone says he wont, ok now i know. It was just a question, i said “i have a question”, not i have a complaint.

One LAST TIME I AM for the lighthouse!

Moving on I wonder what will come from the Murray camp next, she doesn’t seem the type to give in, and they backed off of this so quickly how would she feel she’d look if she suddenly was pro LH I am curious her next public move, I suspect she’ll go further underground on this issue

  24. 24 Joe

What she is probably realizing now, those who were pulling her strings and giving her advice to do a mailing like this are probably pointing the finger at her like it was her idea. I am sure the Republican party hates to look bad. They sure do not look to good now!!

  25. 25 John Tavares

As soon as I get drafted by the Islanders the Lighthouse will be approved.

  26. 26 IslesHostage

So a library can be renovated with millions, pet projects can be renovated with millions, but a cash providing county asset that desperately needs refurbing cannot.

We should celebrate being right……Wang’s plan is a monstrocity and he has done everything but earn the billions involved (Milbury, Pock, Yashin, DP and threats to season holders?). Yet we’re celebrating an arena overhaul plan being shot down because the game plan is making Wang richer, NOT getting an arena in place to improve the team’s health?

Sorry…..we lost one option yet we’re celebrating the loss because we’re gung ho over Wang getting richer. I’d rather we have something to fall back on when this monstrocity rightfully gets turned down.

  27. 27 d-man

people should be able to post using just one name… no hiding

  28. 28 doc

    IslesHostage:
One thing that you are completely forgeting is that unless Wang is actually making money… there is NO TEAM called the NEW YORK ISLANDERS!

The team ceases to exist unless the owner can make a profit.

why is that hard to understand?

    DOC

  29. 29 bCarey

man, the ineptitude in that office is frightening. these are educated government officials? ouch.

  30. 30 art

All that Mr. wang is demanding of the TOH and Nassau will not be committed by the fall deadline. therefore the game of chicken will continue for a few months. If he is smart and he is, he will keep both Queens and the KC options open. MY guess is that he will sell the team and the new owners will move the team out of the state. If KC is not hockey ready there are lots of other NOrth American sites available. Ihope I’m wrong in all this.

  31. 31 WildcatChris

    Kate…are you IslesHostage?

At a time when the citizens of the United States of America are strongly opposed bailing out the very corporations that give hundreds of thousands of jobs to the American people and are the foundation, structure, and lifeblood of our economy do you really think that the feds would say yes to a federal government funded renovation of a sports entertainment complex that would benefit strictly Long Islanders? The answer is no.

Kate and the TOH board better get their acts together or else they’re going to need more dwarf Nigerian goats to eat the weeds growing through the grass of an abandoned Coliseum parking lot.

  32. 32 WildcatChris

*correction, weeds growing through the sea of concrete that would be an abandoned coliseum parking lot.

  33. 33 Joe

This whole LH issue is one big freakin nightmare!!! I cannot wait for it to be over. Then again, I was never into politics or politically correct, I do not know how Wang has been able to keep his composure over all of this, I would have bolted a long time ago.

  34. 34 JayK

One thing everyone should start preparing for, beyond just simply declaring you won’t vote for Kate Murray:

For years, the Nassau County Republicans, in races that might not otherwise grab people’s attention, have had their supporters send out “Do Me a Favor” letters. They are pre-printed, you fill in the “Dear Bob” part. The rest of it reads “You are my friend….So and so is running for a judgeship…please vote for him.”

I don’t live in the TOH, but I am already putting together in my head my own list of Do Me a Favor letters that I am going to send to everyone I know in the town. (And if Joe Ra is reading this…believe me, it’s a long one.) It’s going to say Do Me A Favor: vote for the future of Nassau to be bright and turn away from the past. Vote against Kate Murray. (It will be a little more articulate than that, but you get the idea).

If you want to defeat Kate Murray at the polls, this is one way you can do it. I’ve seen these letters before, and if CB wants, I’d be happy to draft basic wording for it…if the Democrats don’t do it themselves.

    We can defeat Kate Murray!!

  35. 35 JT

Chris, you deserve a lot of credit for Kate backtracking. You mobilized your readers and our voices were heard. Many thanks to you and to all the PBerd who called and e-mailed the TOH. Keep it up guys - we still have a long battle in front of us.

  36. 36 On Edge

Yup…good job by all. I emailed Ra several times and was good enough to reply. I emailed Kate Murray 3 times and no response. Class act. Coward too. But will keep pounding. Nassau needs this too much to quit. TLH project could be a huge impetus to growth of jobs and keeping young people in Nassau.

  37. 37 John R.

“How ugly were the political games that went on before state leaders, meeting in secret, reached a deal on a $131.8 billion state budget?
So ugly that the Empire State Games were a casualty.
There’s almost $3 million in there, in fact, to pay the Buffalo Bills to stay in Erie County. That’s the payment the state has been making every year for a decade now. Not until 2013 will New York be off the hook to what’s admittedly its only resident NFL team”. Times Union
So we as taxpayers are paying the Buffalo Bills to keep the team in NY. I just thought everyone would like to know this. Especially Charles Wang. Maybe he can get some of this state money so our team doesn’t move to Kansas City. I can’t believe that six thousand highschool students are getting screwed out of possible scholarships but we can afford to keep the Bills in NY. I wonder if they’re still selling those I (heart) NY t-shirts. We’re paying the highest taxes in the country, there is corruption at every level, and our politicians couldn’t care less about what the residents want. Exactly why do we live here?

  38. 38 IslesPassion21

Goes to show if enough people voice the same outrage there is power in numbers…

  39. 39 John R.

Isleshostage, even with the Islanders in town the TOH loses 2 million dollars a year. The projected revenue for the town , if the lighthouse were approved, is near 4 million dollars. Meaning the town would have a surplus of 2 million a year from the taxes that would be generated from the lighthouse. That SHOULD in turn lower property taxes and school taxes for the residents. I’m having a really hard time seeing why people are opposed to this. Yes Wang will make money, that’s why he’s in business for himself, but if you live in the county you will make money too. This is really a no brainer.

  40. 40 michael

after this i feel like kate murray needs to step down from her post, after blatantly misleading the voting public and practically lying to our faces. not to mention the money she wasted putting these charades into the forefront! RESIGN KATE!!

  41. 41 Willis

#37 - wow, that’s amazing. I’m guessing there’s some iron clad lock in place that they can’t get out of if they had to cut funding for education in lieu of paying a sports team. Sad.
My state has a lot of messed up things too.

  42. 42 Michael

LOL. This women is a freaking nutjob. She has absolutely no idea what she’s doing, I’m convinced. She’s catering to detractors that aren’t there. All she did was incite anger amongst people and instead they were flooded with emails and calls.

Give up Kate, jesus. If you don’t approve this thing, it’ll just happen when your useless ass is out of office in November.

She just wrote her own ticket out of politics.. keep embarrassing yourself. What a mess this lady is.

  43. 43 isles316

    This news makes me smile.

  44. 44 JayK

Michael #40 and others calling for her impeachment:

There aren’t going to be any shortcuts here. She isn’t resigning, and she’s done nothing that would even remotely constitute an impeachable offense.

You want her gone? It’s going to take a lot of hard work. As I said in an earlier post, whether you live in the TOH or not, get together a list of everyone you know who does live there, and start planning on making sure that a) they’re registered to vote b) they are aware that the supervisor’s race is this year c)that Kate Murray’s backwardness is going to kill the most vibrant project this area has seen in years and d) that they need to get to the polls on Election Day and pull the lever for whoever the Democrats puts up.

And if others want to volunteer to help the Democrats — even a registered Republican, like me — that would be even better.

The work starts now! We can beat Kate Murray!

  45. 45 michael

i didnt say impeach kate murray, i said she should STEP DOWN and relinquish her post immediately. her actions these last couple weeks are an embarrassment to not only herself, but nassau county and the toh as a well!

  46. 46 Pnut

    @#34 JayK
that is a great idea….is there anyway we can see one of these letters online?

    &@#44
I am a democrat that lives in Suffolk and i will happily drive, take my time to help Democrats in Hempstead.

    viva la Lighthouse!

  47. 47 Isles78

The sad part of all this is usually when a politician puts their(her) foot in their mouth instead of correcting things they just keep going on the downward spiral. Murray probably won’t get re-elected if she keeps going in this direction but will without question try and stop the lighthouse project from moving forward until she is gone.

  48. 48 KO21

I just spoke to the secretary and told her the petition is bogus and to remove my name from that piece of garbage. She said to send it via email thru the ToH site, which I already did, btw.

At the end as always I sold the secretary on going to the website to see what the possibilities are and she was interested, even thanked me for the info.

When will we organize and form a picket line by Mr. Murrays office?

  49. 49 IslesHostage

Doc, I appreciate the fact that the islanders do not make money as it stands….not fogotten. Why? SMG. They need more seats. They have two bad contracts on the books. They can’t sell enough tickets and get no parking or concession revenue and lose a huge sum of box office tickets to SMG.
So why, then, if we have this must-do project to make Wang money, why is Wang looking to renew SMG’s lease?
I believe the whole purchase of the NYI by Wang was for the benefit of SMG (see:D’Amato/Gutkowski/Wang) and this roject would be unnecessary IF Gutkowski had his vision (fire Milbury(fanbase), buy out SMG(revenue) and build a new NVMC on site). Wang needs every ounce of this project to make money? I call BS. He makes money right now if he buys out SMG and fills the arena respectably. Playoff revenue is an added bonus if a Wang operation can succeed. The entire thing stinks of greedy real estate development with the Isles being held hostage for 9 years of bad maagement and foolish ownership (or do we forget Wang dropping the SMG buyout in 2002 already?). If Wang couldn’t make money, perhaps Pauly Shore should’ve owned the team, as even he could make money if he bought out SMG and their grab on parking, concessions and tickets rather than renew their deal like Wang is trying to do.

  50. 50 Steve

The Islanders should buy out SMG and move to Queens to be part of the Willets Point project. NEVER should the Islanders try to renew its contract with SMG at NVMC. I would rather see the Islanders taking in revenues from parking, concessions, concerts as well as ticket sales rather than the current situtation where SMG eats up a lot of revenue occuring in NVMC.
