NHL DRAFT LOTTERY, 8:00 pm; Versus, TSN
Even with a win, no 1.800.TAV.ARES tonight

by admin on April 14th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

(Will it be No. 1 or No. 2 for the NYI and their fans?)

UPDATED, 4:00 pm - NHL Central Scouting has just released its final 2009 Draft prospect list. Tavares is No. 1 North American skater, Hedman is No. 1 European. The rest: 2. Duchene  3. Kane  4. Schenn  5. Schroeder. Paajarvi-Svensson is No. 2 European skater.

*

Considering the Islanders’ public stance so far – they will look at 5 or 6 players and consider all trade options – tonight will likely not be the immediate cause for celebration it could have been.

If the Islanders’ 48% comes in and they get the No. 1, it will mean they’re in the driver’s seat – a very, very good thing.

But by all appearances as of this afternoon, the NYI are not interested in proclaiming John Tavares their franchise player, a game-changer, a difference-maker. Instead of setting up a 24-hour 1-800 hotline for season tickets tonight, the team will take calls for the No. 1 pick.

The front office receptionist will also get a lot of calls from fans suggesting what to do – and what not to do – with the No. 1 pick.

From this corner, that’s too bad, a potential missed opportunity. Instead of a celebration, there will only be cautious optimism. Do not rush out to buy anything just yet.

Then again, you have to respect the apparent wishes of the Islanders’ hockey operations department to be methodical about the process. Clearly, if they are going to openly listen to offers from Brian Burke (not sure if he’s got anything worth trading for) and other GMs for the No. 1, they don’t view Tavares as a don’t-think-twice-about-it franchise player. Or at least the player for the Islanders franchise. Should the Islanders draft him more than two months later, Young John will have to deal with knowing he was shopped. He’s a big boy. I’m reasonably sure he will.

All you can ask of the decision-makers of your favorite teams is that they base those decisions solely on what they truly believe in.

In the more likely event the 52% hits and they get the No. 2, we definitely won’t know anything until Friday night, June 26. No matter what happens, the Islanders are sure to give us plenty to talk about.

    4 hours and counting. . can’t wait

  2. avatar John says:

From the guy I like to hear talk about hockey… from his chat this afternoon on TSN.ca….

JP in New York: Bob, who do you think the NY Islanders should take with their pick?

Bob McKenzie: JP, I don’t think the Isles can go wrong either way – Tavares or Hedman. Tavares is a pure finisher – he is going to score goals in the NHL and that’s never a bad thing to have – but to use a basketball analogy, he’s more of a half-court player than the other top offensive players who have gone No. 1 recently such as Steven Stamkos and Sidney Crosby, among others. He’s not a dynamic full-ice player but he has amazing finishing ability and will go to the hard places to score goals and do so in pressure situations when his team needs a goal the most. The scouts do get frustrated at times that he doesn’t play a harder, more complete game but he’s better at that now than a year ago so there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to improve in that regard. As for Hedman, there’s nothing wrong with 6-foot-6 defencemen who can move the puck and Hedman has played well enough against men in the Swedish Elite League to indicate he’s likely going to develop into a top two defenceman in the NHL. Whether this comes into it or not for the Islanders I don’t know, but defenceman take a lot longer to develop than forwards. That’s why the Carolina Hurricanes traded Jack Johnson when they did. They couldn’t afford to wait for JJ to fully develop and took Tim Gleason to give them immediate help. If time frame isn’t an issue for the rebuilding Islanders, they go either way. I kind of think they have a little more up front in terms of youthful potential with Okposo, Bailey and Comeau than they do on the blueline, but the Isles are at the stage of their development where they still need “everything.” If it was me making the pick, I would go with Tavares.

  3. avatar Matt says:

I go from anywhere from 8-12 games a year and as silly as this sounds, I would be willing to make the investment in season tickets if John Tavares was selected by the Islanders in this years draft. Not that I expect a cup run next season but it is a step in the right direction and as a fan that is all I can ask for.

  4. avatar AZS says:

This is the frustrating thing about being an Islander fan. You can watch your team lose all season in hopes that they will finish last setting up the possibility of getting Tavares or Hedman (you know, the two guys the entire hockey world think are the clear top two choices) and then have to read about your GM talk about the “5 or 6″ guys he’s looking at??

Is he insane? I’ve always supported his moves – last season I was willing to try and understand his decision to move down and gather more picks, but if he doesn’t draft Tavares or Hedman I will not renew my ticket plan for next season. He should draft either of them and try and trade the 30th and 31st pick to move up …if they win tonight he should immediately announce that he is taking JT …I mean why do we always have to zig when everyone else would zag?

Like CB has said – we don’t need a bunch of middle of the road prospects – we need some studs …this is our chance …Tavares or Hedman or I’m out …

  5. avatar Steve says:

It’s sad that this is the most excited I am to put on the TV that has to do with the Isles. If it’s the No. 1 pick, obviusly great; if No. 2, then that’s OK-what do you expect being an Isles fan? If 2 and Hedman is there, take Hedman. Look at all the successful teams over the years in the NHL-they all had stud, big-time 2-way dmen on the blue line. Streit is good, but when Hedman develops, supposedly he will be a beast. Good luck boys!

  6. avatar Jim says:

I think there’s a big difference between listening to offers for #1 and being shopped. The only way Snow would be shopping Tavares is if he declared the Isles were picking Tavares and then listened to offers. I believe half the reason he’s not declaring who they will pick is so he can avoid this situation. How bad would Snow look if tonight he declared Tavares his man, and then this weekend there was an article on TSN saying Burke offered Schenn, Pogge and their #1 for the Isles #1 and Snow was considering it.

  7. avatar Rob76 says:

If they are luckily enough to win the lottery….This is rediculous that they dont proclaim that they want Tavares. Why is there always doubt and drama in Islanders country. Last year fans stormed out of the draft party after having the pick traded twice. Why not once just ONE time do what the fans want, and what most other teams would do. Say what you want about Burke – but he is saying “I WANT TAVARES, i will do what it takes to try and get him.” JT in response said he was flattered. Why would we alienate a possible franchise player from the get-go? The only way i would trade the pick is if Toronto won the lottery and moved up to number 3. Then they trade us the 3, Schenn and next years number one. Seems like a lot? So be it – we deserve that return if we are giving up Tavares

  8. avatar jonw says:

Burke is willing to trade up,Lawton and Snow have not not ruled out trading down.It professional jockeying and it’s done at every draft. Each GM is trying to walk away from draft day a winner.I see no harm in each GM trying the best they can within the rules to beeter their team.I only hope that this continues right up untill draft day. Some of this stuff is hilarious.Garth Snow has not given any Islander fan any reason to doubt his ability at making this organization better.

  9. avatar Mikey says:

I am very happy with the statements from Isles management this week. There is no consensus number one pick this year, so it makes no sense to telegraph your moves 2 months in advance. For 10 years we had big mouth GM who made short-sighted moves in order to get his name on the front pages. I’m glad that our GM is taking a low-key, methodical approach.

  10. avatar Isles19 says:

Garth taking the right approach. You dont make decsions based on Public Relations. Lets see how the cards fall…

  11. avatar Drew from Jersey says:

I really want to stick it to Canada by taking John Tavares. Screw the Leafs. JT IS OURS!!!!

  12. avatar Joey303 says:

Lets all wait until 830. We will have a better idea then. If the Isles dont win, we all could cry “fix”. I dont think I could take 2 1/2 more months on a daily basis of this though. Im taking a break starting tomorrow.

  13. avatar beatlebailey says:

cant blame snow if toronto offers us everything including schenn the 3rd pick in this year’s draft and a couple of future number ones you have to consider it. It would have to be three first roudners and schenn to even consider it. Only way you make the move is if you get bowled over.

  14. avatar Chris TMC says:

“Young John will have to deal with knowing he was shopped.”

CB: not immediately proclaiming some as your draft choice months before the actual draft, you think that is the same thing as shopping a specific player around? By that logic, does that mean almost every player in the NHL was “shopped”, too? I mean, what GM doesnt talk to other GMs about draft picks?

It was only yesterday that you looked at things from both sides- now today not “Stamkosing” is an insult against John Tavares, something that he is going to have to ‘deal with’? Wow!

  15. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

why the need to trade down, I really would like to know. We have 2 first round picks, 3 second round picks, and potential 3 third round picks (when guerin pick drops from 4th to 3rd if pens advance to next round)

Trade down why? Every hockey expert has said its TAVARES and HEDMAN had and shoulders above the rest. No mention of Duchen, Kane in that conversstation. They are in second TIER.
Burke can promise his next 5 yrs of draft picks to maybe have a shot. Nooone on that Toronto roster is worth it.

Dont try to be smarter than eveyrone else. You cant be.

Tavares or Hedman will be ours tonight. Im hoping its Tavares.

  16. avatar Captain Crunch says:

I’m sorry, but the all the sunshine being shone up our skirts about “rebuilding” and the “plan” had better freaking include taking the player who has been unanimously deemed the best player in the draft by the hockey world. To even hint at passing on this player when we are well into a rebuilding of this franchise is an irresponsible stewardship of the team we love. I for one don’t think that our scouts, GM, and owner know something that everyone else doesn’t on this one.

If we come away with 4 so-so players instead of one who could put butts in seats and may actually win us some games in the next 5 years, I’ll be seriously irritated and may return to a very mildly passive interest in this team.

  17. avatar beatlebailey says:

schenn, duquene (with Toronto’s 1st this year)(spelling) and two future number 1′s for Tavares? Any thoughts?

  18. avatar mike says:

there is no way we trade jt or are number 2 pick snow is not that dumb.tonight is our night the hockey gods will shine on us for the frist time i n a long time enjoy everyone this is a good thing

  19. avatar Hockey1919 says:

Brian Burke is in a no lose situation, he is in no position to draft Tavares so he can blow smoke all he wants. He craves attention and it just drives up interest in the Leafs at the start of the playoffs when traditionally there is nothing to talk about in Leaf country but cleaning out their lockers or choosing putters.

  20. avatar JayK says:

I just want to remind everyone that when the Quebec Nordiques traded away Lindros, they basically came away with one Stanley Cup and the foundation of another, because Philadelphia so grossly overpaid. Garth Snow should not shut the door to Brian Burke or somebody else doing something incredibly stupid. Outside of our jumping up and down and screaming “JT is ours!,” what do we gain from it on the roster? Nothing.

  21. avatar Mikey says:

Captain Crunch (16) – who is this “unanimous” best player you speak of? Even though CB is supporting Tavares, even he admits that there is no consensus number one pick among scouts:

    http://www.islanderspointblank.com/2009/03/the-gospel-according-to-tim-burkehedman-is-ahead-as-a-d-with-unlimited-upside/
    http://www.islanderspointblank.com/2009/03/point-blank-scout-poll-tavares-or-hedmanthe-margain-is-slimmer-than-you-might-think/

Even Brian Burke said, “I’m not confident every team has John Tavares as No. 1.” There is no consensus number one pick this year. Lets not pretend we know more than scouts who have seen these guys play 50+ games.

  22. avatar loran16 says:

Personally, there’s only one way we trade the first pick and thats for something overwhelming. But it’s possible.

Say Toronto offers Luke Schenn, Jason Blake, this year’s #1 and next year’s #1 and to pay for a good deal of blake’s contract. If you’re the islanders, you really DO have to consider that deal, even if you do decide in the end to pass.

  23. avatar Scott says:

I have no objection to this non move. Working in PR, i see the value in saying hes our guy tonight. but as a isles fan desperate to see winning team on ice, id rather Snow took his time, consider every option open to him. what if some GM went a little nutty and made a fantastic deal for the isles?

Im sure in the end the isles will end up with Tavares or Hedman.

Also, i have trouble believing announcing the intention to draft Tavares tonight will really sell that many more seats, then the news that they got the #1 pick.

  24. avatar nystrom23 says:

why do I sense the islanders believe taveres doesnt want to play for the isles…and from it sounds like he has the ability to be either a guy who plays well but could be a cancer in a locker room or that franchise they need….and also if they get blownnnnn away with a deal and i mean blown away…. and if they do trade the pick the isles better at least get a team’s top prospect, their #1 this year, and either an impact player for now(i.e. Kovalchuk) or a #1 next year….i suggested this once…but what about our two first rounders and 2 second rounders for bogsian, kovalchuk, and their first rounder

  25. avatar TheDawg says:

    Jayk,
great point. I think GS should keep all options open. Burke is just a blowhard. Anybody have a rough idea of how often the worst team DID NOT get the first pick?

  26. avatar Lorne says:

Somebody please have me committed as this has no become an ultimate joke.

  27. avatar The Mick says:

I’m in agreement that for a deal to be made, the team (maybe the Leafs) really has to make a compelling offer. Compelling, meaning their 1 this year (has to be top 5 in my mind), their 1 next year, a top level prospect (NHL ready).

My opinion is that the Isles should take either Hedman or Tavares. I actually prefer Hedman, but one of the two will do. I wouldn’t mind Duchesne either, but they better get more than him in the trade.

JayK, I understand your reasoning with the Lindros trade, but remember they got Forsberg in return who turned out to be a better player than Lindros.

I agree with Spartiarti – RVC, the Isles have plenty of depth picks, just take one of the two dominant players in this draft.

  28. avatar hubie39 says:

CB….what do you make of this tidbit from Howard Berger today? He is suggesting Tavares does not want to come here…………..

As such, it’s unlikely Burke will put restrictions on particular assets a team would seek in pursuit of Tavares — whether he makes a deal before or after the entry draft. That means Luke Schenn has to be in the mix… perhaps unavoidably if Burke truly wishes to land the No. 1 prospect in the hockey world. Burke is also likely praying that the New York Islanders win tonight’s draft lottery. Tavares has cryptically made it known he not enthused about playing for the team with the best percentage chance to land him, and Burke will be very active in dealing with the club that owns the top pick.

  29. avatar Mike from Philly says:

Its too bad you don’t run this team C.B, it would probably do wonders for the franchise.

    Tavares or Bust…..

  30. avatar kabbage says:

I think it is disappointing that there are so many season ticket holders saying that they will not renew their season tickets if Garth does not pick John Tavares with the No. 1 pick or does not announce tonight that he is going to take Tavares if the Islanders win the draft lotto tonight. The NYE management is working hard to lay a foundation for a team that is a perrenial contender with a strong feeder system of prospects. Considering that they started with cupboards that were almost bare, they are definitely moving in the right direction.

So go ahead an not renew your season tickets (take your ball and bat with you and don’t let the door hit you on the way out!). I guess we’ll see you in a few year when you line up to buy your tickets from the scalpers. We’ll help you to your seat because it might be tough with the casts you have on your legs from jumping on and off of the bandwagon!

  31. avatar Mike from Philly says:

Number 27…your article is more Canadian spin about trying to keep their golden boy in Toronto. Tavares has made it clear he would come to the Islanders in a heartbeat

  32. avatar donm says:

Not showing your hand is good poker playing. When they do make their pick, in June, they’ll be able to assure the player they get that he was their #1 all along. Remember that the Isle’s system requires that the forwards play D when the D-men pinch. Oh, and by the way, the Isle’s scouts and GM were right when they disagreed with most of the hockey press and signed Streitt to be a 2 way big minute defenseman.

  33. avatar Captain Crunch says:

We need to boob-proof this decision. If Snow says Tavares is our man, I rest easy for the next 9 weeks; if he says he’ll listen to offers, I’ll register garthmustgo.com and toss and turn each night as I contemplate the reincarnation of Mad Mike on Draft Day.

  34. avatar JayK says:

hubie39 — on Berger — “cryptically,” defined as “We can’t actually cite anything he said (and in fact he’s said the opposite), so we’ll just read in to it what we damn well feel like.”

As I said before: if Taveras resists signing here, Garth can always play the card of not trading him until after this season is done. And then what that means is that free agency, which could come to him at age 25, now won’t come to him for an extra year. That is a move that would cost him millions, and he knows it.

  35. avatar geduffer says:

loran16 (21) – Toronto can’t pay another players contract to facilitate a trade. I wouldn’t want Blake back anyway. Shenn, this year’s #1 and next year’s #1 for the #1 overall would be good, but Brian Burke isn’t doing that.

  36. avatar Le Dude says:

I don’t know why, but suddenly I find myself hoping that they take Hedman over Tavares.

  37. avatar TheDawg says:

I just answered my own question, here it is:WINNERS” OF THE PREVIOUS DRAFT LOTTERIES
1995 – Los Angeles (was 7th, moved to 3rd; Ottawa retained 1st overall pick)
    1996 – Ottawa (retained 1st overall pick)
    1997 – Boston (retained 1st overall pick)
    1998 – Tampa Bay (was 3rd, moved to 1st)*
1999 – Chicago (was 8th, moved to 4th; Tampa Bay retained 1st overall pick)
    2000 – NY Islanders (was 5th, moved to 1st)
    2001 – Atlanta (was 3rd, moved to 1st)
    2002 – Florida (was 3rd, moved to 1st)
    2003 – Florida (was 4th, moved to 1st
    2004 – Washington (was 3rd, moved to 1st)
    2005 – Pittsburgh (all 30 teams had a chance at #1)
2006 – St. Louis (retained 1st overall pick)
    2007 – Chicago (was 5th, moved to 1st)
2008 – Tampa Bay (retained 1st overall pick)

    * San Jose was selected in the 1998 draft drawing, but Tampa Bay held the right to swap 1st-round picks with the Sharks and exercised that right to go to 1st.

  38. avatar geduffer says:

Captain Crunch (32) – If you want to boob proof the process, get a sledgehammer and apply it to your computer. Otherwise, relax and enjoy the ride. Personally, with his speed, I think Duchene is a better fit for the go-go system. ;)

  39. avatar Coach B says:

If you missed NHL Live today, a guest of Lagreca and Billy Jaffe was E.J. McGuire, the director of Central Scouting. You can catch that spot a 6PM on the re-broadcast.

  40. avatar The Mick says:

This team could have had Schenn last year if it really wanted him. If there is a trade it has to be substantial. I really hope we just make the pick.

  41. avatar bf51 says:

If we need “everything” it would not be so ridiculous to trade away the the #1 for multiple players/picks. If neither Hedman/Tavares are considered an Ovechkin/Crosby instant impact type player then I don’t have a problem with Garth considering a trade.

  42. avatar Schultz39 says:

If Toronto stays with the #5 pick, I would consider doing the Schenn, Tor #1 2009, Tor #1 2010 for our pick. We could get a steal at #5 (maybe Duchene) and have Schenn and a security blanket for 2010 draft when Toronto sucks again next year. Burke would be a hero by keeping Tavares in Toronto.

If anything, we need to win the lottery tonight b/c then it puts us in such a better position.

  43. avatar Michael R. says:

    Hey Chris,

Sorry if this has been answered in another post, but has there been any official word from the Islanders about a draft party this year at NVMC, such as when it’ll start, any guest appearances/autograph sessions, if you need to buy tickets, etc.?

    Thanks!

  44. avatar Rob76 says:

the silver lining on this season is the chance to have the top pick overall in the draft. Why mess with that? Just take Tavares – no fancy stuff please

  45. avatar Tony says:

    43

June 26th….6pm i believe…should be on the Isles website….they announced it at the games over the weekend.

  46. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

CB … I’m in your camp … If the Isles win … they should just start making Tavares jerseys … there should be no question … If any team wants to trade up … and Garth is inclined to listen … I’d only listen to a bottom 5 club … I’d want their 2008, 09, 10 & their best prospect under 21 years old before even furthering the conversation. Then hold firm and watch them squirm … then take Tavares anyway.

  47. avatar Captain Crunch says:

37 – Sorry, I guess I should’ve enjoyed the rides we took when we made these wonderful trades of high picks in recent years. Forgive me for being nauseated by the prospect again this year.

  48. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Garth doesn’t want to go down in history as the General Manager that traded away the pick that became Tavares … Look at Mike Milbury’s legacy Garth … LOOK at it!!! You’re still trying to clean up a mess he made 10 years ago… think hard about the consequences of thinking to hard when it’s right infront of your face. JT or VH … there should be no other questions.

  49. avatar Rick says:

Of course the Isles aren’t going to say ‘Hey, come see John Tavares (or whoever they select) play for years to come’ – they don’t even know WHERE they are going to be playing in a few years. I fully expect Snow to trade this pick for a bunch of ‘nice’ players like Bailey, when this team desperately needs a STUD, and that man is Tavares.

  50. avatar Chris TMC says:

I worry that the Isles might have fewer fans not because of what happens on the ice but because so many Isles fans gave themselves heart attacks.

  51. avatar Joe says:

Im saying a prayer that Garth doesnt mess this up. Ill get center ice to watch every game while im up at college if they do this right.

  52. avatar Mick Vukota says:

CB: Your sarcasm is flawless. Keep up the excellent work.

  53. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

nystrom23 I’m sorry, is Atlanta in the playoffs? What good does having Kovalchuk and Bogosian do for us?

We need our own identity, not another Smyth like player that will want huge payday next year like kovalchuk.

Ok guys. LETS GO ISLES. hope we get #1. either way we win.

  54. avatar Steno says:

It’s really sad that we have been reduced to this getting excited over trading draft picks year after year. I agree with # 44 10000%, just take Tavares or Hedman, how many more freaking draft picks do we need, how many more years are we supposed to way. I mean, for Chrissakes, is we get the # 1 or # 2 overall, WHAT ELSE can we want? We got the best picks, USE THEM!

  55. avatar Steno says:

“supposed to WAIT” is what I meant to say in 54, sorry.

  56. avatar Blizzard says:

I think the problem here is all the hoopla surrounding Taveres. How stupid did Tampa Bay look with Stamkos billboards all over the place when he had a dismal start to his early career. Snow is looking at all options here. Taveres seems to be a one dimensional guy and he aint gonna be prowling around the net in the NHL like he does in juniors. Im sure he has a great set of hands no question but the Canadien press has the kid as the second coming cooler heads should prevail. At least Milbury isnt calling the shots.

  57. avatar -Big Van Vader says:

    (10) Saying that you don’t make decisions based on PR is right. If you’re not the Islanders. they NEED public relations!

  58. avatar beatlebailey says:

if you get a package proposed to you like a luke schenn, a Matt Duchene and 2 additional first rounders you have to look at it. No one is untouchable

  59. avatar Mike says:

If we move the pick it better yield a signed kovulchuk or Lecavilier. I know Kovie hasn’t done much in the post season or getting his team there. His skill is amazing.

  60. avatar Brother Rat says:

Some think the worst case scenario is not getting JT–but, I think the real worst case scenario is that we *do* get Tavares and through a combination of lack of motivation and not really wanting to be here, he either doesn’t develop right or doesn’t perform up to expectations. We switch coaches, linemates, etc.–but nothing. Then, he walks or is traded, and blossoms. That’s what I dread.

Skill level aside, if Garth sees any chance that he won’t give 100% or doesn’t want to be part of what we have, then we should pick Hedman at 1 or shop the 2 pick if JT is on the board.

  61. avatar Isle B Damd says:

I’m sure Garth is calculating his options with all teams so that when all is said and done he will have acquired all the picks from the entire 3rd round.

  62. avatar WTF Garth says:

Its all about quality this year, not quantity. So do us all a favor and stop playing games. If we get the #1 pick, announce it tonight and allow for John and the Isles marketing team to start preparing for the upcoming season. Fans, season ticket holders and family to this organzation have been through enough. Give us this and atleast we can rest till July. Its been a long year….

  63. avatar Jon says:

islanders fans be prepared… this is what it means to be an islander fan.. dissappointment… get ready for #2….

  64. avatar BC says:

I think something that needs to be understood is that the fact that Tavares is not the consensus number one is nothing against him, it is just how good of a player Hedman is as well. Yes last year some people were saying how some teams would have taken Stamkos over Tavares, but now I really don’t think many people say that. The reason last year that Stamkos was the concensus number one is that although Doughty and Bogosian were great players, Stamkos was just too far ahead of them. This year, Tavares and Hedman are just both too good to be the concensus number one over the other.

  65. avatar Joe says:

I agree with 62, quality over quantity this year…a whole bunch of mediocre players no longer is going to do us any good, it’s about time we added some real talent to the grinders, and we’ll have a good team for the present and future.

Mike #59 — Vinnie is signed. At like $10 million per year. No thanks.

One of the big unknowns in hockey is just what the cap is going to be year after next. It will take a small hit next year, because next year is based on this year’s revenues. Most season tickets in ’08-’09 would have been sold before the economy went into the tank. But the economy should really hit the revenues in ’09-’10, affecting the ’10-’11 salary cap. If that’s the case, you don’t want Vinny LeCavalier on your team.

I’m looking forward to the ’10-’11 version of the Rangers being Drury/Gomez/Lundvquist and the Hartford Wolf Pack.

  67. avatar Cruicky says:

11 – Why stick it to Canada. What did the Canadian people ever do to you. Other than supply the league with 70% of its players or higher for the past 100 years. You have to look back at your winning teams and count the Canadians my friend.

  68. avatar Scott D. says:

I know everyone is suggesting that we should just take Tavares and leave it at that, but I understand why Snow at least wants to listen to what others have to say. As much pressure as Snow is under to land Tavares, Brian Burke is under 10 times as much. You never know. He may go nuts and offer something like Schenn and his ’09 and ’10 1st rounders. They maybe Snow can package some of his extra picks to move back up to the top 4 and take Duchene, and you’d walk away with Duchene, Schenn and another first rounder in 2010. Unlikely, of course, but so was the Mets giving up Kazmir for Zambrano. You never know unless you listen.

  69. avatar whatever says:

I can tell you this right now, If they don’t draft Tavares or Hedman and pull a trade, this franchise is done with 95% of its fans. Everyone wants Tavares for the #1 pick. If you don’t give the fans something to cheer for, you can forget about the fans supporting anything that this franchise does in the future. Fans put up with the last place rebuild for the opportunity to draft a class player. Sorry to say but trading a pick is a bunch of baloney. That’s what Milbury did and if Garth Snow trades the #1 pick for a bunch of crap, you can bet there will be a huge revolt.

  70. avatar Mark in Ottawa says:

I hate this God-damn stuff. Why can’t this team ever make the right decision ?
You have a potential franchise player at the go and YOU WANNA TRADE ?

    For what – A goaltender ?

To replace your “franchise” player ?

  71. avatar Matt says:

would Garth Snow’s job be in trouble if he trades our pick? i mean our fan base is frustrated enough with the quality of play and players of our team, can you imagine the reaction if Snow pulls a trade off?

  72. avatar whatever says:

Also, Denis Potvin was considered one of the top picks and Torrey heard “offers” on draft day too, he stuck to his guns and drafted Potvin and then Bossy the following year, so it’s really dumb of Snow if he trades it away.

  73. avatar mtrico says:

I think people need to settle down. The pick has not been traded, it hasn’t even been shopped. Yes, it would be great from a PR perspective to proclaim that you will be taking Tavares with the first pick (assuming we get it). The Islanders would sell a lot of jerseys, and a lot of season tickets. However, what is the harm in hearing the offers? What if the Isles receive an offer that is too good to pass on? It’s unlikely, but it could happen. So, except for the good PR they would get, which don’t get me wrong, they could certainly use, what is the harm in waiting? Moreover, assuming we get the #1, by waiting, for the next 2 months, the entire hockey world will be discussing the Islanders and what they may do with the pick. That’s some pretty good PR too.

  74. avatar billy says:

i’m def getting frustrated. I can only hope that garth is playing coy right now because they dont know where they will pick and so it would be ridiculous to pine for tavares when we cant even get him. that being said i wont stomach another draft from last year. i appreciate what he did and got us lots of picks but we already have tons this year, take friggin tavares. this is one decision that you have to listen to your fanbase for.

if we do make the mistake and trade the pick we better get nothing less than lecavalier or datsyuk and im not even kidding about that. the maple laughs have nothing to give us but schenn and if he’s off the table than dont even answer the phone snow.

draft tavares and make it known tonight, theres nothing negative about it. Package some other picks to see if we can get another decent d-man or a forward if we get 2nd and hedman.
    nothing else should happen

  75. avatar Scott, East Meadow Long Island says:

HAHAAHAAA – this all makes me laugh…we havent even gotten our pick yet..and we are making pretend proposels to toronto, tampa and atlanta….

there is nothing in the world like being an islanders fan…

that being said..garth just needs to take either hedman/tavares.. trade the second 1st with one of the higher 2nd round picks..to move up to the mid of the 1st..then take the best foward (if we take hedman) or deman (if we take tavares)…

    that being said..lets go islanders..

on another note..i wrote the TOH and got a letter back..it explained why it isnt the best idea for the TOH to back the light house project…

ahhhh to be an islanders fan…

  76. avatar Drew from Jersey says:

#67 – I meant to stick it to all the Canadian Islander bashers hoping JT does not go to the Island.

  77. avatar Billymac says:

Snow can’t say that he wants to take Tavares tonight. It takes any potential deal off the table. Brian Burke is a wild card. He may suggest a deal that will help the Isles in the long run.

As far as the Nordiques getting a Stanley Cup for Eric Lindros – it’s a fact. Who knew that Forsberg was better than Lindros at the time? If Philly did, there’s no way they would have traded him. Maybe someone ends up being better than Tavares in the long run. How many drafts out there was the number 1 guy not the best, even though he was “head and shoulders” above the rest? Let’s relax and let the people in charge make the decision. Then, let’s support that decision and see what happens. To doom the franchise 2 months before the draft is kind of silly, don’t ya think?

  78. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

I don’t think that Toronto has the depth to offer the #1 team in the draft anything to move up 6 spots and have the #1 draft team move 6 spots down…. that is huge!!!!

Taking a future first round pick from T.O. would be risky … it could turn out to only be a middle first round pick based on the fact that the Leafs would vastly improve with a player like Tavares … and they would have a GREAT shot at landing impact FA wingers wanting to play with him…. to much of a wild card.

  79. avatar lefty says:

Jonw, Garth Snow has given us plenty of reasons not to trust him. HIS team absolutely sucking is one and last year he did not even know how long Petrov’s Russian contract was. LOL! What in his resume makes him a good GM?

  80. avatar DPS says:

I am more anti Snow than anyone on this blog but I do not think there is anything wrong with what he is doing. Always leave the door open. Never give away options for free. If TML call and are willing to give up L. Schenn and 3 number 1 picks to move up 3 spots do you do it? Of course. Will that happen? Prob not but always keep your options open. Number 1 rule of being a GM

  81. avatar FIsles says:

As illustrated by Tavares’s comments, Burke has pulled off a successful PR move that has already made an impression on the kid. Not so great for the Isles PR if they get the 1st overall pick and stay schtum. Of course, you can always make your decision after holding meetings and taking calls for the next two months, but after this Leafs talk — and you can forget about the fact that the Leafs don’t even have the pieces to swing a deal for the 1st overall pick as that means nothing in terms of impression and image — Tavares will be underwhelmed on draft day if he indeed has had to wait for that long to hear he’s an Islander after all. Snow can keep his poker face, but he’s got a bad PR hand if he waits until June only to draft Tavares as expected. The image he would project in that case would be that of weakness in comparison with Burke’s strength. Weakness as in lacking conviction. Don’t underestimate the effect of Burke’s conviction on Tavares. It’s really not an ideal situation.

I agree with McKenzie’s assessment of Tavares. I also have to say I haven’t viewed Tavares and Islanders as the perfect match at any point. During the season, I was probably hoping to get Duchene or Schroeder, but I think you just can’t pass Tavares if you’re in the position to draft him. And leaving Hedman for the team picking third seems like another potential facepalm moment.

  82. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

PR image is bad because he isn’t going to come out tonight and say who he is going to draft? Please people. 90% of the fans could care less. us 10% that watch things religiously are not who they are playing too. They need to make the right decision for this franchise, not get caught up in a PR competition with Toronto.

  83. avatar mike says:

If any team could screw this up you know it will be the Isles.
It Amazes me that there are any fans left. If they mess this up they will be down one more fan.

  84. avatar mike says:

Maybe we could trade Tavares and the 30th pick to Colorado for Ryan Smyth?
Sorry we already did a BONEHEAD trade for Smyth.

  85. avatar Alex Kinkead says:

Relax…. Breath in and out…. It’s OK.. Don’t jump ship just yet!

  86. avatar isles72 says:

what do you do if the leafs offer to take dipietro off your hands (God love ya Rick)

nyi#1 and Dipi for tor #1 and somethin

leafs can absorb the dipi contract any way they want with their deep pockets

  87. avatar isles99 says:

no bsing today…u land the 1st pick, you take tavares, the franchise forward….you land the second pick, you take hedman, the franchise d-man…..bottom line is you don’t pass up on franchise players…..if they do, like many others, i am done buying tickets and i am out. don’t re-invent the wheel GARTH SNOW!!!!!don’t try to outsmart others!!!

  88. avatar ken says:

can someone confirm that this is on TV on VS at 8pm. B/c my guide says something else is on

  89. avatar IFIE says:

Looks like another sad day awaits in Islanderville. This organization has not gotten it right in 20 years! No reason to believe it will change. The whole world says Tavares or Hedman, but I’m supposed to trust that Garth Show & Charles Wang know better? OK sure, just like Charles knew keeping Milbury was right. Signing Yashin was right. 15 Years to DP was right. Firing Laviolette was right. Trading #1 2007 pick for Smyth was right.
Do I need to go on?

  90. avatar ken says:

how is the smyth trade boneheaded?

Nilsson has been a healthy scratch all year
O’Marra is playing in the Federal League
and we gave up a late teen pick in a terrible draft. we recognized it was a terrible draft.

Smyth gave us a legit shot at finally winning a playoff series. if not for the dipi injury who knows.

  91. avatar bCarey says:

    CB,

what if tavares were to blow out his knee between tonight and June 26? would not proclaiming him your franchise savior and promising him to your fans be such a bad decision then?

i like snow’s stance. i see no issue with him exploring any possibilities with his scouting staff. i like the message it sends to them.

  92. avatar Rob76 says:

86…Yes its on Versus – NHL.com, Newsday, Point blank, and the islanders website all have reported that it would be on Versus. It will also be replayed on the NHL Network at 9pm.

  93. avatar d-man says:

please lord in heaven…. jesus… mohammed… buddha… scientology alien guy… please let the islanders move to KC so these negative whiney cry babies just shut up…

    amen

  94. avatar C-Money says:

I wouldn’t trust the islanders with Wayne Greztky in his prime on the board on draft day.

  95. avatar Blizzard says:

Stop the insanity!!!!!!!!!!! Taveres is an Islander!!!! And Toronto can suck it!!!!

  96. avatar ken says:

what # will duschene wear as an islander?

  97. avatar Mario says:

Hey guys. I am an assistant golf pro in Orange CT and the past 2 days Mike Dunham has played golf here in the afternoon since he is working with the Sound Tigers before this weekend. I asked him about who the Isles will take and he said Garth is being quiet on the whole subject. His take was that he would take Hedman because as a gaolie you start from the dmen and work forward. He said the Isles cant lose even if they had the 5th pick. I asked him about Rick and he said Rick is fine as far as he knows, and that he will be ready before training camp. they shut him down early for obvious reasons and he thinks he will be ready. He is gonna be back here next week before the tigers game Wednesday with Eric cairns so I will try to get some more good stuff from him.

  98. avatar StevieL says:

ken #88. What exactly do the Isles have left as an asset from that trade?

  99. avatar Eyes to Sky says:

    John #2
Thanks for the interesting post from
Bob McKenzie. He’s someone who knows his stuff.

  100. avatar tond24 says:

do the right thing and if #1 is pulled tell the world its tavie and start selling tickets and jerseys and for once give me (selfish) a good summer…these spygames are stupid..we need goals..garth must go

  101. avatar Brother Rat says:

These last comments are cracking me up….

CB, any chance you can contact Neil Smith and see what he’d do?

I know he’s now with Dallas, but that would really rile the fans up. That’s the way to judge Garth. (sarcasm, folks!)

  102. avatar DingoAteYoBaby says:

according to the digital tv guide of Time Warner Cable…the draft special is on Versus at 10:30….says that Cage Fighting is on at 8:00pm…so whats correct? I set the DVR several days ago, and the time has not changed.

  103. avatar Brian B says:

Does anyone else but me have faith in Garth Snow? To me the guy has done nothing that will say he will make an idiotic move (you can complain about moving down last year’s draft, but no one knows how that will play out yet) Anyway, I really trust the Isles scouting staff…those guys know what they are doing. Ryan Jankowski is highly regarded around the league, and they’re the ones responsible for jumping all over Mark Streit. So if they see a kid they like, whether Tavares or Hedman, I’m going to trust their decision. If they like someone else, they will do what they did last year.

  104. avatar Ajax says:

I’m positive Wang is behind this. Its all a ploy.
    - Garth gets 1st pick
    - Garth does something stupid and trades it away
    - Fans go nuts and burn down Uniondale
    - Wang gets Lighthouse

  105. avatar Michael from T.O. says:

My real question is, does Tavares want to come to the Isles? If he pulls a Lindros, so be it. In the end, it would show his maturity level and the real person he is. That is why players like Okposo and Bailey are great. They are much more mature and have great leadership skills.
Players who think they are all that at his age generally struggle in the league (i,e Lindros, Daigle).

  106. avatar Bryan says:

Versus has cage fighting listed and not the draft lottery… whats going on? CB where can we watch?

  107. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

NHL Network doesn’t display the lottery at 8 either.

  108. avatar brady says:

vs. has from 8-10 cage fighting, not the draft lottery, and nhl network has the draft lottery at 9???? why is everyone saying it will be on vs????

  109. avatar Don't Mind The Haters says:

Ray Ferarro was just on the Team1040 and said there is talk of the lottery winner trading down and drafting Duchesne. Wonder if he was referring to the NYI.

  110. avatar RichM says:

Burke was surprisingly blunt and honest about his desire to trade up to get Taveras. Maybe I am just a cynical Islander fan but maybe Burke knows something we do not, like Tavares forcing a trade to the Maple Leafs. I hope I am wrong, but when has a GM been so blunt about something like this.

  111. avatar whatever says:

I’ll say this too. Here’s the problem and the same thing went down with the Guerin trade. All the speculation does absolutely no good. It’s best to wait for official word. And until then, June 26th, we DO NOT know who they will draft until we hear, “And with the first or second pick (depending after tonight), the New York Islanders select….” I really almost wish CB wouldn’t have posted something like this because I knew once it was posted it was going to give spark to wildness. I’m simply saying that we need to just breathe. I don’t agree in trading away the pick if we got it but really, us speculating for days on end is only going to drive people mad. By the time June 26th rolls around people are going to have a fit.

  112. avatar Joe says:

109, if the Islanders trade down AGAIN, I might be done. How much heart-ache can one fanbase take?

And it BETTER be on Versus!

  113. avatar Gloobenberg says:

Not too long ago Tavares was interviewed on TSN and said he didn’t care what team he went too. He was even specifically asked about going to the Islanders and JT mentioned their great history and said wherever he goes he wants to help his team win.

  114. avatar Ajax says:

    111 – agreed and agreed

  115. avatar whatever says:

I think the Isles would be really foolish to trade down. I think that this is all hype and it won’t happen.

  116. avatar jonw says:

    # 79 Snow wanting to rebuild the organization makes him a bad GM.
Like most rebuilds you will be bad before you are good.So incase you weren’t aware sucking comes with the territory of rebuilding.
I as an Islander fan feel that Garth/Janikowski have done a decent job so far.

  117. avatar Drew from Jersey says:

Guys it’s gonna be on VS. at 8pm EST. Don’t go by your stupid cable companies. Its been pretty much advertised that tonight at 8pm will be the draft on VS.

  118. avatar Dan says:

Tonight starts a new era. I went to church and prayed for this day to be a glorious one.

  119. avatar bonzo says:

does someone have a link to see this over the internet…nhl.com and tsn.ca are suppose to be streaming the lottery live, but I cannot find a link…thanks in advance…

  120. avatar jonw says:

Being that we are already on the internet i would have thought it would have crossed someones mind to go to vs.com and find out that the draft lottery is on from 8-8:30

  121. avatar jon from nj says:

While I realize many think the Isles can’t “lose” tonight with #1 or #2, I am dying for Tavares. Yet, why do I have this nagging, pessimistic feeling that the Isles just don’t have that luck, and the tanking Bolts will? Please, for one night in 2 decades, can the hockey gods shine a light on the Islanders?

  122. avatar bonzo says:

ahhh…got it…have to go to video on nhl website

    http://www.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp

  123. avatar Steve says:

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst…

  124. avatar Chris M says:

I’ve spent an entire season waiting for just one ping pong ball. To say we’re due is an understatement. Bring home #1 and then draft #91.

  125. avatar Merrick says:

I want to lose the lottery and then put the Isles brass in a vault until June 26th and it’s time to make the number two selection. Let the Lottery winner make the choice for us and don’t allow Garth and company to entertain any silly ideas until we’ve chosen the leftover from JT or VH.

  126. avatar streit 02 says:

110 RichM – your statement is the reason i just came on. Although i dont think Burke knows something we dont, I thought that was rather extreme and borderline crazy talk from Burke in that press conference. How in the world does he think he is going to trade up that far? CB any input? If we get the #1 pick Snow better not trade it. There is nothing right now for this franchise that can be a better deal than drafting in teh #1 hole

  127. avatar Justin says:

The Islanders are actually fortunate there are two stud players in this draft. With their luck, you figure they would get the second pick and lose out on the consensus top pick and end up taking some stay-at-home defenseman from western Canada. It’s a no-lose situation this year… I hope.

  128. avatar MSA says:

My .02 – If you are a paranoid maniac such as myself, and would even consider that the NHL would tamper with the lottery, as wildly believed has happened before, here is the good news…

No Canadian team can move up to the top, and Bettman seems, at least publicly, to support Wang, and the NYIs….so the chips (lottery balls) should fall fairly…

I know about the extreme prejudice in officiating….hoping it is a non-factor with the lottery.

Here is the text of an email I sent to the Islanders, we all have our opinions but this is it for me.

    To The New York Islanders,

Congrats on winning the draft lottery. As a partial plan holder, who has spent thousands of dollars at the Coliseum in the 16 years since our last playoff series win, I implore you to take John Tavares.

Is he the next one? The savior? Only time will tell. But if your organization decides to bide time, trade down, go in a different direction, trade the pick, fill three needs instead of one, etc. then I am done. Don’t bother having Wang call me, Snow write me a letter, or have Mike Bossy personally tell me how I will miss out on the next business club lunch. I will be done. Take the risk…go for the home run. The program is NOT working.

  234. avatar Chris M says:

With the first overall selection in the 2009 NHL Draft, the NY Islanders select John Tavares.

  235. avatar streit 02 says:

THIS SEEMS TO ME A BRAINLESS DECISION THAT REALLY DOESNT NEED ANY DISCUSSION. COME JUNE I BETTER HEAR TAVARES NAME CALLED 1ST. AND THE ISLES BETTER BE THE ONES CALLING IT

  236. avatar Gillies Goring says:

    DRAFT JOHN TAVARES!

  242. avatar Brother Rat says:

Yo, did anyone catch a facial tick on Hedman at the start of his answer? Like after the delay, when he got the question?

    Was that me?

Tavares was respectful, but not psyched–no smile, but that’s expected.

  243. avatar BC says:

Finally something to look forward too!!!!!

  244. avatar doc says:

    Positive Karma…

Until maybe the last week or two… the Islanders played their tails off… and this was their reward as a franchise.

    And ours as fans…

    DOC

  245. avatar IslesFanInBkNY says:

    John Tavares! John Tavares!

  246. avatar Kevin says:

YES!!!!! I’ve been following John Tavares for 2 1/2 years dreaming that we would have this chance..

  247. avatar C.J. says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  248. avatar Staten Islander says:

I know its been a lot of years, but I didn’t recognize Morrow

  249. avatar michael says:

wow i feel like i just won something.. i would have felt pretty foolish wearing my islanders hat, islanders tshirt, islanders shorts and islanders jersey for nothing.. thx for making it worth while nhl!

  250. avatar isles99 says:

with the first pick in the 2009 nhl entry draft, the new york islanders select JOHN TAVARES!!!! WOO HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  251. avatar Blizzard says:

Is it my imagination or did Taveres look like he was gonna cry?

  252. avatar Doug F. says:

Trade Taveras and I’m going to become a Rangers fan…

  253. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

WOOOOOOOOOOO! Season worth it. Hey Garth, you better take TAVARES!

  254. avatar Obs says:

    Ohhhh BABY!!!

  255. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Cool! Now let’s trade the pick to Toronto for Luke Schenn! :|
    :D JK.

Victory!!! Duchesne and a boat load of extras here we come!!!

  257. avatar Nicholas says:

I am so pumped!!! C’mon Snow take JT!!

  258. avatar jon from nj says:

Brian Burke can go stuff it. He’s got nothing to offer the Islanders.

  259. avatar Cary says:

    WHOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    JOHN-TA-VA-RES!!

    JOHN-TA-VA-RES!!

  260. avatar greg says:

love CB, thanks, coming back to let us know there is a god.

  261. avatar BringtheReign says:

its going to be tavares. even streit said u better pick a sniper, we dont need a defenseman right now.

  262. avatar dose says:

    morrow was awesome.
    great job.
    what a blast.

  263. avatar eric says:

    let the games begin!!!

  264. avatar Eric says:

GET US TAVARES! HUGE HUGE WIN! Biggest win of the season!!!!

  265. avatar Tim says:

TAVARES…I cannot wait for next season.

  266. avatar mike says:

Good night for the Islanders. Now lets hope they do the smart thing and bring in Tavares. They need a face of the franchise and thats is what they could potentially get in Tavares.

  267. avatar Rishel31 says:

Ken Morrow still wins everything! This is going to be an exciting couple months leading up to decision day in Montreal when JT can officially become an Islander!!

  268. avatar Mike from Philly says:

    Tavares welcome to NY Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  269. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

Garth is not dumb, neither is Ken Morrow. Did you see the smile on his face?! TAVARES, HERE WE COME.

  270. avatar Angry Bill says:

Congratulations to all. Maybe our luck is finally turning. Lets hope so.

  271. avatar Gillies Goring says:

Now we know the franchise isn’t cursed… Losing the #1 in the lottery would’ve been out of our control. But if Garth and Co. let this potentially franchise-changing moment pass them by, it’s on them.

  272. avatar b-ri says:

biggest win of the season! …hopefully. Did anyone see the face hedman made when asked about possibly playing for the islanders? maybe it was just a twitch but that little lip off to the side didn’t make him look too happy

  273. avatar The Mick says:

Like everyone here I’m very excited.

  274. avatar JPinVA says:

what’s the chances of gettng Kenny to lace them up again… What a class act!
Then start thinking roster moves to make room for UFA’s and moving up in the first round.
Is there a GM out there that thinks Thumbellini just needs a “change of scenery”…. This is whenre a GM earns his pay… he found a home for Tadpoli now he needs to find a new address for Jeff.
    Because goofy GMs choose JEFF!

  275. avatar Ben Gunn says:

    thank god that happened

  276. avatar drive45 says:

Awesome Baby!!!! 1st time we’ve won anything important in a long, long time. Now lets go get that 5th Cup!

  277. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Well now they are DEFINITELY moving to Kansas City

  278. avatar jimmy says:

how about the #1 pick and the 29th plus comeau to atlanta for kovalchuk and the 4th.. then draft duchene or kane at 4…

  279. avatar dan sec 303 says:

Now that we got #1 and going to get Tavares, let’s sign Gilroy!

  280. avatar Obs says:

Why don’t they open it up to fans. How sweet would it have been to hear all the cheering/Booing fans instead of the reserved look on the team employees. Hold it in the city with the number one pick.

  281. avatar Brian B says:

Morrow looked extremely excited when getting that pick…tells me he really wanted it…which tells me they really wanted tavares cause they probably would have gotten hedman at 2.

P.S. the Atlanta guy’s reaction was priceless when it was announced they got the 4th pick.

  282. avatar Patrick says:

after isles got the pick, tavares kept on looking down. is that a sign or something?

  283. avatar Joe fred va says:

Streit knows we need a natural goal scorer and John Taveres will get his opportunity to play with Okoposo and possibly Bergenheim, Not a bad line at all!! Brian Burke can go sccccrrraattccchh!!

  284. avatar Obs says:

Hextall and the Atlanta GM looked like someone stole their birthday cake.

  285. avatar Kristie says:

    Well, this is fantastic.

Great news, and hopefully they select John Tavares in June.

  286. avatar Paul says:

    Thank You GOD!

  287. avatar heineken says:

    woohoo #1 pick ….
now come sat night at the old barn at the sound tigers playoff game i will be sporting a “SNOWY WE WANT TAVARES” BANNER hopefully chants too!!!

great day in isles history lets just do it right come draft day

  288. avatar Alex Kinkead says:

Anyone else almost have a heartattack?

  289. avatar JPinVA says:

I’m excited about 2009-10 already. Isn’t this great!
    Tavares between Okposo and Bergenhiem.
That line will buzz like a hornets nest.
Who’d ahve thought that the Islanders would be more exciting in July than the Mets. The Isles will be wheeling and dealing to create space and bring in free agent talent, while the Mets outfield drops fly balls in key situations.

  290. avatar eric says:

i hope who ever they pick really wants to be here.

  291. avatar b-ri says:

i can put the way i am feeling right now to music

Dah nah nah nah nah HEY! JT! (rock and roll part 2)

When the isles won the draft lottery i… jizzed in my pants (the lonely island)

oh my god i am pumped! i literally screamed yes and did a fist pump like jonathan papelbon does. my mom thinks i am crazy…i probably am, but this is great.

  292. avatar streit 02 says:

I wouldnt read too much into the players facial expressions. I dont think theyd be reluctant to come to the isles. If you think about it, why the hell would you wanna play in tampa bay?

  293. avatar Staten Islander says:

i’d be nice to get a big body to put with KO and JT, The Lightning Company Line II

  294. avatar DC23 says:

I am keeping my excitement in check until the pick is actually made. Remember, this is the franchise that gave DP a 15 year contract, fired N. Smith after 40 days and named the back-up goalie as his replacement, and fired Ted Nolan out of the blue. Sorry I can not share your optimism!

  295. avatar Steve says:

Wow! Garth, stop the feather fluffing and commit to Tavares, now! Before the media goes wild in Toronto over a deal with Buke…We don’t want it. Have your fun with the rest of the picks, but DON’T MISS ON TAVARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  296. avatar Pat says:

I yelled so loud when we got the first pick that I scared the crap out of my dog. LETS GO ISLANDERS. Hopefully this is the start of a new dynasty.

  297. avatar Tony says:

Isles …Please take Tavares and run,You just got a great player for losing,NOW SELECT HIM #1 !!

  298. avatar drive45 says:

Can’t imagine that the facial expressions of the players would look better if they knew they were going to Tampa Bay or Atlanta – real hotbeds for hockey.

  299. avatar Marc says:

All of our rooting against the Isles this season for this moment to come has paid off. Now it’s in Snow’s hands to make the right pick in June. Things also to consider are:

    1) Can Tavares help get the Lighthouse project move forward?

    2) Can Tavares help attract quality free agents on July 1?

There are, of course, other big questions.

  300. avatar JPinVA says:

let’s not bring any bad karma to JT, the kid is still playing.
when his season is over and the Isles can take complete control of his life, I’m sure they will make an anouncement.

  301. avatar JPinVA says:

    Marc (304)
Yeah…maybe they should put a lighthouse costume on tavares in July and have him march up and down hempstead tpk.
Why does somebody always have to bring up that crap. I bet you answer the phone during sex! well… I hope you have bluetooth if you do.

  302. avatar dmen77 says:

    could lightning strike twice tonight

Isles win the lottery and AJ Burnett has a no-hitter thru 6……..

I saw it. JT is coming to the Island!

  304. avatar StevieL says:

Man that was great tonight! I don’t know how to react to the Isles winning something! Tavares looks like he has an attitude as well! Would have loved to hear him say “the Rangers Suck”. Tavares and Okposo and somebody big! “The Beast Line”!

  305. avatar Dlr says:

trade the pick for a goon

  306. avatar Cruicky says:

Congrats. The Islanders get their wish. Now the 2 month soap opera about what to do with it. I hope you guys just take Taveres. However, the option of calling Burke and making a deal would be an interesting call to listen in on….

  307. avatar MSA says:

Maybe Snowy can trade the #1 pick and Fritz to Toronto for their #7 and a few 2nd round picks in 2010.

  308. avatar ALL ISLES FANS REVOLT! says:

What’s with all the Schenn talk? I don’t think he’s that great a prospect, is he? I think Hedman might be better.
