SI. com says Leafs can provide NYI “cap relief” LOL

by admin on April 17th, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Last summer Jim Kelley of Sports Illustrated dot-com wrote coaches like Bob Hartley and Paul Maurice didn’t care that they didn’t get the Islanders job. Kelley didn’t bother to check with Bob and Paul. Take my word for it, they were, uh…let’s just say “disappointed” Scott Gordon got the nod. Now Jim writes one of the reasons why an Islanders-Toronto trade for John Tavares is possible is because Toronto can provide the NYI with “some cap relief.” BHAHAHAHAHA! [Insert Jack Edawards-like cackle here]. Ah, yes. The Islanders, the team that will need to make a few moves (like last summer) to reach the salary cap floor. I worship SI The Magazine, which has fact-checkers. Comments.

  1. avatar Zach says:

that is just a total disgrace. You would think a writer from a magazine of that level would at least do some research before writing such a thing about a trade

  2. avatar Gloobenberg says:

CB..WTF is going on with all this garbage?

What did we ever do to get such a response from the hockey world?

    Why are we so hated?

  3. avatar b-ri says:

What a fool. I like SI more than ESPN the magazine, but that is just rediculous. Toronto should change their name to a different kind of leaf…one that is green, and makes you think the crazy thoughts that they have been thinking the last few days. Their minor league team is already the (bob) marlies…why not the Toronto Pot Leafs?

  4. avatar stevedepot says:

Sports Illustrated is to hockey as what WFAN is…clueless.
ANY hockey fan worth their salt knows this. The rest are simply hockey fans 2nd or 3rd after Baseball and Football. To me, that’s no hockey fan at all.
So when fans like me read Sports Illustrated and hockey in the same sentence, we laugh. This is the same rag of a sports magazine that had Basketball don the cover back when our Islanders were winning 4 cups in a row. Thank god for the hockey news and Hockey Digest back then and nowadays…HOCKEY first websites and yes, even blogs like yours CB.
    Great piece.

  5. avatar Coach B says:

Tampa Bay might want some cap relief. Very poor job by Kelley and not the first time either.

  6. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

OMG!!!!!! CB ~~~~ STOP IT!!! My ribs are hurting me … You have to be kidding me!!!???

That is one of the easiest things to check on … How can these guys collect a paycheck if they can’t even do a simple fact check? Did he confuse the Isles’ and Rangers’ payroll?

I used to subscribe to SI but stopped that a long time ago … I found to many factaully wrong info in most sports … remember CB … I used to do stats for NHL on Fox … I became a hardline stickler for correct info … getting the wrong info meant giving JD, Doc wrong info … and that wouldn’t sit well …. especially since they know their stuff.

That is just disgraceful journalism … I hope he does a retraction.

  7. avatar b-ri says:

I just read his little post. He also claims that many people feel that Hedman is the best prospect. He needs to check his facts. MANY MANY more people think Tavares is the BEST prospect.

    Jim Kelley = FAIL

  8. avatar AK says:

Is it just me or has sports reporting taken a turn for the worse? Did reporters make this many mistake’s before? I know most bloggers (not you CB) are clueless individuals. However you would think legit reporters and the people who proof read their articles would know better.

  9. avatar Quagmire says:

In his defense, somewhat, it appears its more sloppy writing/editing than anything. Sounds to me like he probably intended the cap relief part to apply to Lightning only. If Isles take Hedman I would not be shocked to see a Tampa/Leaf deal go down.

  10. avatar John says:

Interesting… in Damien Cox’s Toronto Star video blog today (yeah he’s the same guy that got things screwed up with Wang looking for public financing a few days ago to build a new arena), anyways today he speculates that Burke’s intention isn’t the Isles draft choice, but Tampa Bay’s because they are in dire financial need and need cap relief etc etc… I guess as I write this maybe the Isles have Hedman rated higher than Tavares, or he cold be trying to maneouvre a way into Tampa’s pick to entice Garth on a deal. Whatever the case may be hopefully Garth holds steadfast on what he wants and who he wants. If it’s Hedman… then I say soap the Leafs for whatever you can get including the #2 pick and other pieces to the puzzle. That all being said, I’m still a JT supporter and hope the team takes him #1.

  11. avatar Ed J says:

I don’t think money is an issue with this Islanders team….

    Wong = $

Tampa may be another issue but if the Islanders want to make Mr Wong some cash simply get JT.

    JT = jeresy’s, season tkt’s, ect….

If by some possession of the Devil and we trade away this pick my head may actually explode……

But SI is much better then the crap that guy wrote.

  12. avatar Jimmy Sparx says:

What a @*&#*#!* joke!!!!! It is amazing how writers with zero hockey knowledge are allowed to write anything about the sport.

  13. avatar RichM says:

If the Leafs would take Lecavaliar off Tampa’s hands, then they would be likely to get the Lightning’s pick at #2. It sounds crazy, but Vinny’s contract is an albatross that almost no team can take on, with the exception of Toronto. Burke essentially gave Tampa $3m at the deadline for a 4th round pick. For Tampa to survive, Vinny may have to go. As for the Isles, it would destroy the fan base if they traded Taveras away.

  14. avatar isles72 says:

cap relief would be toronto eating Ricks contract

then it becomes wangs decision , not garths

  15. avatar John says:

Rich… Tampa’s albatross isn’t Vinny… it’s dumb contracts like Ryan Malone and Radam Vrbata and other marginal players… if the Leafs take those contracts then I think Tampa listens.

  16. avatar beatlebailey says:

#12 dont agree….if toronto did get tampa’s 2nd pick and then we exchanged picks with toronto plus get their 2nd thsi year and first next year and then took hedman you cant complain IF the isles like hedman better than tavares…what would that tampa toronto trade look like though Toronto’s first plus what for lecalivier and tampa’s first??

  17. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

In retrospect I’m kinda glad that Snow is playing his cards close to his vest … he legitimately has more hockey to watch … see how JT performs in the playoffs without distracting JT from his mission at hand … also … it allows JT to take in the moment if he’s selected #1 at the podium … Just hoping Snow picks JT.
    ***
After reading Jim Kelley’s article again … you all have to wonder what other inaccurate info is in that article that we don’t have facts on.

Working in the media I’ve always seen really selective editing, wording and inaccurracies that drove me nuts. Don’t believe everything you read.

  18. avatar Ari from Long Island says:

    LOL!!!

CB, Is there a way for you to contact the people at SI and get this idiot fired for not even being able to check simple facts???

This guy deserves to lose his job! What a moron!

Oh, and this writer and everyone like him:

    **** the Leafs!!! They suck!!!

  19. avatar RichM says:

All I am saying is that Vinny’s has a no trade clause that kicks in July 1. His 11 year contract starts then. His contract is crazy, especially when you consider the cap going down the next 2 years. #14 You are right. The Leafs could take on Malone or others as well. For the Leafs taking $ like that off of Tampa’s payroll they would trade for the #2 pick. It is not crazy to think since Tampa is losing $ big time.

  20. avatar Larry says:

is it sooo difficult to type in NHLNUMBERS.COM? your paid to research and write articles. do your job Jim Kelley. with all the people in this country unemployeed, im sure theres plenty who are more than willing to do a better job.

    jeez.

  21. avatar Ajax says:

OK, the guy is a jackass, but lets not stoop to the level of going after the guys head. This is a disgrace to SI, let them live with the fact they just tainted their credability.

  22. avatar Joey303 says:

I have made it know my preference is Hedman. If the Islanders preference is Taveras, as it is the fans, then I believe Garth should try and play that he’s leaning towards Hedman. I know people on here (553 of u), would go nuts and some might even kill themselves :) hearing that, however if Garth could get something out of Tampa for it, then why not? Malone is only 29, would make the Isles tougher, bigger, and would provide scoring. 6 more years at an avg of 4.5 is a lot, but we have the room. He’s not a stiff

  23. avatar Brother Rat says:

CB, this can make logical sense. Both teams could use some cap relief–Tampa from the ceiling, Isles from the basement! Maybe he’s calling for a solution to our problem of needing to hit the cap basement by strategically taking on bloated, overpriced Toronto contracts?

So….either the guys’ flat-out wrong, or just an idiot. Or both.

  24. avatar stopthepain says:

CB – this is what I was getting at in my last comment – THANK YOU for your excellent, usually SOURCED reporting. That is what makes you a superior reporter to these no standards fools at the established publications. Your reporting is the main reason this blog continues to grow by leaps and bounds, while the established media types continue to see declining sponsorship and subscriptions.

  25. avatar Tony F. says:

SI and hockey in the same sentence is a joke. They’d rather report on golf than hockey any day. It isn’t the first time Jim came up with outlandish reporting from some bizzaro world. Why did he even make the effort to write it, it’s just pure cr*p.
Articles like these, from old school sports media, are a shining example of how established reporters can be replaced by a high quality blog like PointBlank. I used to go to TSN.com, ESPN.com, John Buccigross is awesome, and THN.com but now the first stop is with CB. Don’t let this blog die, I will pay money, let’s start a new hockey web site!

  26. avatar Smitty says:

Rich, I can guarantee you there are a few teams who would take Vinny off TB’s hands, let alone along with TB’s #1. No way TB trades Vinny without getting a nice package in return – not giving up thier own picks. Any team looking for a quick turnaround and not an entire rebuild would want to do that (e.g. Montreal, Vancouver, Colorado with Sakic likely retiring, etc.).
Look around the league, there are many 10+ yr contracts being given out and Vinny is one of the best in the game.

  27. avatar Chris TMC says:

b-ri (3) :D The Toronto Pot Leafs… LOL!!! Hahaha, that could help explain all of this- kinda.

“Cap relief” lol… unreal. You can really BE this clueless and still get paid for supposedly doing your job? Wow- youve got a sweet deal goin on over there, Jim Kelley!

  28. avatar Macch says:

Hahaha wow. Great Jack Edwards reference CB.

  29. avatar nickyco says:

One thing that’s great about self proclaimed experts, is that they’re usually not. They’ve been put up on a pedestal by someone, then wind up believing they’re actually smarter than they actually are. pretty amazing what an ego can do for someone

  30. avatar felix says:

gotta love how all sportswriters outside of LI are clueless about the Islanders cap situation. Cap Relief. Cap relief suggests we are up against the cap and need to shed salary. A bit of research would show that the isles need to get to the cap floor. even on the boards with toronto fans they say the leafs have the ability to take salary back. what salary are the islanders giving them. Witt 3 mil reasonable, sutton 3 mil reasonabel if he plays the entire season, streit 4.1 mil bargain of the century, all the forwards none of whome make more than 2 mil. martinek around 1 mil, hillen under a mil,

toronto needs someone to take blake and finger but that is not anyones problem but their own.

no cap relief necessary, in fact they could take on a lecavlier and still be well below the cap.

  31. avatar Jimmy Sparx says:

Joey303— I can see your point with Hedman and there is doubting his talent. My view is this……..

The Islanders D-corps are going to be a year older, which hopefully should show ability wise on the ice. With the injuries that happened this season, if that was not the case, I think the goals against would be a bit lower with or without Ricky in net. I do not know if the defense is the #1 concern for next season.

Tavares instantly gives the Islanders a finisher, which is what this team needs. GOALS, GOALS, GOALS!!!!!!

Again, I would not be heartbroken like most Islander Fans if they did make some sort of deal and select Hedman, but if that is the case, they better sign at least one forward who can put the puck in the net. Playing with a 1A line and 3 3rd lines will not get it done next season.

  32. avatar Priest says:

Jim Kelley is also a co-host on FAN590 here in Toronto. This morning the moron co-hosts talked for an hour about Kyle Wellwoods comments after last night game where he said something like “Toronto is a tough place to develop because they put so much pressure on yo if your numbers aren’t good instead of looking at your whole game.” Pretty clear that “they” is the media (and the few fans that just repeat what the media is saying; not the real fans) but over and over again they kept saying that they wanted to get in touch with him so he could clarify which players or managers he was referring to. Constantly saying things like “are we talking about other players here, or coaches, cause those guys have changed since he left. Maybe its the fans…” The only time anyone even brought up the media was when they had Glen Healy on, and they just completely ignored his comment. (Healy also made a counter-point against the fact that the media makes it tough, which made some sense). The Healy portion is on fan590.com, but if you listen to it, keep in mind that it went on for three 15 minute segments at least, Healy’s was the most reasonable one.

  33. avatar Unit_King says:

No!!! It doesnt make sense. We dont trade away the number one pick to get to the floor!!!!

  34. avatar Tom says:

Cap relief??? Jim Kelley obviously doesn’t know what he’s talking about…BUT I like the way he thinks! May we live so long to see the day the Islanders need “cap relief”…wouldn’t THAT be something? Cap relief??? The Islanders???? Yeah, ok.

  35. avatar Unit_King says:

Garth if your listening. DRAFT TAVARES!!!!

  36. avatar Marty says:

I wrote the following to Jim Kelley. I hope he responds.

Do you research before writing? The Islanders trading Tavares to Toronto (which isn’t happening)would create cap space. I don’t know if you realize this, but the NHL had a lockout a few years back and when they resumed play, they issued a salary cap. The salary cap has a floor, which is the minimum amount that a team’s payroll must be at. The Islanders are going to have to ADD players this offseason in order to reach the floor. So how is trading a young stud playing with a low contract going to help our team financially? Besides your error there, you should also consider the economic benefit of having Tavares, a player our fan base is dying to watch play will have. The team will sell a lot more tickets and merchandise. But yes, trading him to Toronto makes loads of sense…if you don’t know what you are talking about and you root for the Leafs.

  37. avatar FourCupsin4YearsNot60 says:

CB – What can we do to ensure that PB does not disappear? Do we write the Islanders? Someone else? I would surely miss this coverage if it was gone.

  38. avatar Joe says:

That is one of the silliest things Ive ever read, that guy stinks. Good find, CB.

  39. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Yeah … I read that Stan …. I think he gave a VERY fair assessment of the Isles and what they need to do. I tap my stick to that article … I ask nothing but fairness in articles about any team I root for.

CB ~ Speaking of Cap issues … what do you think Snow has up his sleeve regarding goaltending next season. Does he buy insurance and get a legit 1-B goalie? We have the cap space.

  40. avatar TuxTax says:

This just proves that professional newswriters outside of Newsday, maybe even the post, actually do their homework on the Islanders. Its as if they are non-existent! I guess you cant blame them for the lack of an NHL team in the past 8 years or so… :(

  41. avatar pablo says:

Boy! We have to love all the attention the islanders and Tavares is getting.
I hope in June Tavares has an Islander jersey on or there might be some truth to all this.

  42. avatar Hockey1919 says:

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but CBs well informed piece on the Toronto media was picked up on Kuklas Korner as well.

  43. avatar Bryan says:

Islander fan or not this is just annoying. People read this magazine in hopes of staying in the loop and learning. He prints information that is ridiculous.

Even if we were over the cap what bad salary do we have on the team? Our highest paid players Streit, DiPietro ect are also our best and most valuable players.

Unless they want to give us 5 first round draft picks and take yashin’s cap hit there is nothing to talk about.

  44. avatar Pete M says:

#25. That is about as even handed an assessment of the Islanders current situation as I’ve seen in a long time. Compared to that SI crap its Pulitzer Prize material.

  45. avatar Stan Fischler's Boy says:

I think right now at this moment, the Islanders need to bring in someone that will sell seats! Nobody in this draft will do that except for Tavares. IF the Isles draft Tavares, I will pick up a season plan, I will buy a jersey and there are many like me who would do the same. This organization needs this right now, like the Pens needed Crosby, like the Caps needed Ovashkin. I think it’s time Wang made a little money back..

  46. avatar DanNOLA says:

Unbelievable. Simply Unbelievable. If I messed up information like this at my job I would be fired. Cap relief? The only relief that I need as an Isles fan is relief from this Brian Burke nonsense. What ever happened to descending rapidly? Seems like the Loafs have been the epitome of mediocre for the last several years. Just bad enough to miss the playoffs, and just not bad enough to miss out on lottery picks.

  47. avatar Law says:

My guess is “cap relief” was the wrong word choice. Both franchises seem to have some financial difficulties at the moment. As Wang has stated, he loses millions each season on the Islanders. And that was before the current economic climate set in. While we obviously don’t need “cap relief” from an NHL-mandated salary perspective, I don’t think “budget-relief” overall is out of the question. He’s still paying Yashin not to play. And I’m not 100% sold on DP being counted on again (a butterfly style goalie with multiple hip and knee surgeries?!). Hopefully we don’t do anything rash.

And even if I’m correct, the fact that I have to interpret what a writer says speaks volumes about the writing. =P

  48. avatar Ray says:

Loved the Jack Edwards plug! That had me laughing harder than this SI garbage.

  49. avatar UIF says:

Wow, he has Toronto getting Tavares AND Vinny from TB. What could possibly be going the other way, Justin Pogge? Seems to me like he was under a tight deadline and didn’t give this one too much though, haha.

  50. Good God almighty, this is a new low for Kelley. Remember also in late November when he said the Isles had no decent kids and Gordon was leaning on the same vets that Nolan did? Huh, wonder how that turned out…

  51. avatar Hockey1919 says:

In fairness to Kelley, this looks like an SI editorial re-write from an article he wrote for sportsnet in Canada which made a lot more sense (although still a Toronto fanatasy). It was far more realistic in assessing how little the Leafs had in terms of assets the Isles would want and focused on Tampa Bay and positioning the Leafs in the number 2 spot.

  52. avatar Mark says:

All I, as A Die Hard from 1973 want to here about this off season is The NY Islander’s select with the first selection in this years draft,The NY Islander’s select, John Tavares. The Lighthouse Project is approved, and the NY Islander’s announce that they are going to make their main uniforms, the uniforms of 1980. And possibly sign Matt Gilroy, and possibly a Free Agent or two. But, John Tavares is there, all they have to do is select him. Marking another “Great Moment!” in NY Islander’s history. Please Garth, make John Tavares your first choice. Thanks Chris, Mark N/J Go Islander’s! Again, Garth John Tavares

  53. avatar Schultz39 says:

The only cap relief we need is getting to the floor, not away from the ceiling.

  54. avatar art says:

Toronto is the NY Yankees of hockey. Except baseball has no CAP. The same arrogance self importance and media a– kissers. But unlike the Yanks they are LOSERS!!

  55. avatar The PolishPrince says:

Too bad about Gilroy if it’s true. I’m sure the deal is overpayment for someone with absolutely no NHL experience. Who don’t the Rags throw money at (beside me of course)?

  56. avatar Staten Islander says:

I’d love to find out what he’s smoking, I want some of it.

  57. avatar Coach B says:

Snow has to be in great cap shape for the summer of 2010-11. If the cap drops as some say, the Islanders will be a year futher along in rebuilding and can have the best options of what to do.

  58. avatar Walygz says:

How are the Rangers going to pay Gilroy ? They have 10 spots to fill at the end of the season, with $16 mill to do it. If they sign him at what he wants (2.5-3 mill), they are in baaaad shape.

  59. avatar Isles_Goal says:

LOL…These clueless writers must think they can convince the Isles into thinking they need CAP relief. Anything to try and get that # 1 pick. CB…GREAT JOB calling-out these irresponsible writers…and looking out for our Islanders!!!

  60. avatar drew says:

    CB,

I am scared at how crazy the hockey writers and fans up north are getting about Tavares. I just hope Snow doesn’t break to the pressure. Scratch that, I hope Tavares doesn’t get wooed by all of this TAMPERING. Cause let’s face it, that’s what this media storm and Burke douchebagery is: TAMPERING!!!

If I were Bettman I would seriously address Burke right now. Unfortunately, freedom of press works against us right now. Stupid writers!

  61. avatar Rich Pilon is an Animal says:

    Wow, these people are ridiculous.

  62. avatar dedshark says:

How do these people earn these jobs? effin morons man.

  63. avatar dedshark says:

bryan 43…correction: 5 first round pick, yashins buyout AND schenn lol

  64. avatar flux says:

Don’t you think this Boo Bad Toronto thing gets a bit boring by the time?

As far as I know NYI got the first pick, they can pick Tavares or not – as they like. So why caring so much about Burke’s statements or the Toronto press writing. Nothing of any interest happening on the island? How’s the weather over there? Rainy?

  65. avatar Chris A says:

    Epic fail

  66. Almost as good as Wang “threatening” to relocate the NYI.

  67. avatar HyeDray says:

Why would the broader “outside of Toronto” give a damn where Tavares plays?

You would think that sports writers, and the NHL itself would almost prefer that a player like Tavares lands on Long Island.

If you stop to think, the mission of the NHL is to promote hockey, and to grow the sport.

Getting facts wrong is bad enough. But trying to eliminate hockey from a particular region at the hands of the so-called hockey loving media of Toronto is sad.
