PHILADELPHIA at NYI, 2:05 pm: Game Chat here
Tavares…Stamkos…Rech & Fritz up…Gilroy, not

by admin on April 11th, 2009 at 9:19 am

Point Blank has learned that John Tavares will be part of the NHL Draft Lottery show on Tuesday night at 8:00 pm. As they did with Steven Stamkos last year, TSN will interview Tavares via satellite (VERSUS will take TSN’s feed for the U.S.) Of course, this doesn’t mean that Tavares is the slam-dunk ultimate prize of the draft. Nah, not at all. Just that most of the hockey world thinks that way.

Perhaps the lottery winner will seize the opportunity to propose marriage to Tavares on international TV, as Tampa Bay did with Stamkos a year ago. Perhaps not.

Speaking of Stamkos, amazing how it’s now fashionable to poke holes in the kid and his selection first overall last June. To recap, the teenager joined a franchise in freefall – the trading of Dan Boyle for almost nothing, ownership controversy, the Melrose hiring and firing. The Lightning finished 29th in the league. Stamkos, who turned 19 in Febuary, has 22 goals and 23 assists in 78 games – similar numbers to what Tavares could post in the NHL next season.

Steven Stamkos is going to be just fine. Drew Doughty is fantastic – some say he’ll be better than Hedman – but every team would love to get their hands on Stamkos.

Updated (11:17 AM): Joel Rechlicz and Mitch Fritz have been recalled for today’s games. Andy Hilbert and Kyle Okposo are both expected to play.

Would be surprising, disappointing, if the Islanders do not close out the season with two wins at home over the weekend – no matter what the lineup is.

Despite my regular posts to the contrary, the chatter in Comments on this blog and in the rest of the blogosphere continues the dream of Long Islander Matt Gilroy signing with the Islanders. From this corner, we see it as fantasy. I guess some readers don’t want to believe me, which is perfectly fine. I’ve been wrong before.

I’ll say it one more time, before he signs in the next few days. I’d be very happy to be wrong on this one, but for a while now my information has been that Gilroy is not signing with the Islanders. Nothing has changed over the last 24 hours and I’m sticking to it.

Look for him to ink a deal by the middle of next week not only not in New York, but likely not even in the United States of America.

If Gilroy does sign with the Islanders, I’ll lift the Comment Guidelines for one post so you can kill me as much as you want. I’ve even received some emails from supposed FOGs (Friends of Gilroy) saying it could happen. I’m sticking to my guns, standing by my sources. Don’t see it happening.

Bridgeport beat Springfield last night, 4-3, to move into a tie with Hershey for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Jesse Joensuu scored his 20th goal – a strong first full season in North America for the 6-4 Finn – and added an assist. The other Sound Tiger goals were scored by Micheal Haley, Jon Sim and Junior Lessard. Nathan Lawson had 23 saves for his 17th win of the season.

Bridgeport is now 48-23-3-5. When you consider how all the Islanders’ injuries affected the Sound Tigers’ lineup on a nightly basis, Jack Capuano merits serious consideration for American Hockey League Coach of the Year.

The Sound TIgers host Lowell tonight in the season finale and play their first two home games of the playoffs next Friday and Saturday at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Point Blank will have coverage of the two games on Long Island and follow Bridgeport’s postseason to the very end.

*

“NY Hockey This Week” with Don La Greca and the Point Blank staff is on today from noon – 1:00 pm. Then it’s the train to the car to the game, where we’ll have a story from the Islanders’ 2:00 pm matinee against the Philadelphia Flyers. Would be so much easier if the NVMC had a train stop.

Looks like I’ll be part of News 12 Long Island’s newscast on Tuesday night. I’ll be on at 8:20 pm, replayed at 9:20 pm and could be part of their late broadcasts. I’ll also blog all night from the studio. I hope Bill Daly announces the lottery results by 8:20. Please, Mr. Daly.

Comments. Talk about today’s game here.

I’d like to see Gilroy in an Isles sweater but I also don’t see it happening. TML will throw big bucks at the LI native just as they did with Bozak before him. Too bad, he would be a nice addition to the blueline and a nice player marketing-wise. Thanks for all the hard work CB, the blog continues to impress on a daily basis.

  2. avatar DanNOLA says:

I don’t think Gilroy will be an Isle either. He will garner much more money than what a player with exactly zero pro experience should. Sounds perfect for Toronto.

  3. avatar Staten Islander says:

Question, will we be able to see the lottery here? Will VS have it?

  4. avatar Dreu Theran says:

Regarding the STigers playing their first two playoff games at the future Lighthouse: Is there precedence here? This doesn’t seem fair to the loyal fans in Bridgeport to take away possibly their ONLY home playoff games this year, if they lose the first two. I mean, if the Isles finally make the playoffs and to increase exposure they move the first games to MSG, I would rightfully be pissed. Is this something that happens often in the AHL? And if not, why now?

  5. avatar Islander505 says:

“From this corner, we see it as fantasy. I guess some readers don’t want to believe me, which is perfectly fine. I’ve been wrong before.”

It’s not a question of being a fantasy (well, maybe), it’s especially not a question of proving you wrong.

It’s about stirring up a groundswell of support for an idea who’s time has come.
Marshalling the energies of all the good that would come out of a deal between Gilroy and The Isles.
It would be a win/win for both entities, more importantly it would be a huge win for Long Island and Long Island Hockey…at every level.

As a PR guy, I think you understand this.

Until he inks an offer sheet, it ain’t over.

Wang says he is dedicated to LI?
Here is a clearly demonstrable opportunity for him to prove it without the accompanying catcalls that “he is in it for the money”.

If Wang BURIES Burke’s offer to Gilroy, what greater indication is there of Wang’s commitment to LI?
(Did Steinbrenner ever let money get in the way?)

What greater poster child for the LONG ISLAND Lighthouse Project, (bringing a 24 Year Old back HOME to work on the Island) would there be other than Matt Gilroy.

Was it over when The German’s Bombed Pearl Harbor?

C’mon CB, get on the bandwagon.

  6. avatar admin says:

    (4) The reasons for the switch have been written about repeatedly by me and your fellow Commenters.

    (5) I guess I’m not as worked up about it as you because I don’t see Gilroy – 25 when camp opens – as a great NHL player. From the lengths you’re playing him up, you clearly do. Talk about PR! LOL…CB

  7. avatar Outside says:

its due to scheduling issues at the bridgeport arena.. the arena did not give them the right to certain days per their contract, and gave it to a show instead, so they are fighting over that, so the first 2 games are here..

  8. avatar John R. says:

I guess I just don’t see what all of the fuss over Gilroy is about. I’ve seen him play and have heard a lot about him and the consensus is that he’s decent, not great. I don’t understand why any Isles fan would suggest throwing the bank at a decent player. I’m seeing more and more posts that seem to indicate that some fans are more worried about the Isles image rather than signing the right players for our team.

  9. avatar Netminder39 says:

I guess it really depends on what Gilroy will be asking for. If we have to overpay him, then don’t do it. Garth’s plan is to “Sprinkle” in a few free agents, so if Gilroy wants more money, he can be overpaid somewhere else.

  10. avatar Islander505 says:

    CB,
I won’t profess to be an expert on hockey talent. But Brian Burke has a pretty good track record in that area….and he sure wants him.
    Good enough for me.

Regardless of how Gilroy pans out as an NHL player, the immediate need for the Isles is to get the LightHouse Project done.
Signing Matt Gilroy and bringing a 24 year old LI’er back to work on the Island is kinda what the LH Project is all about.
Keeping the youth on LI and providing job opportunities.

If Wang overpays Gilroy, and Gilroy turns out to be a bust as a hockey player, yet his presence helps get the LH Project ACOOMPLISHED….it’s still a win for Wang and the Isles.

    Just my opinion….

  11. avatar cgs878 says:

Wow, the “Botta-LaGreca Hour” sure does pop around the ESPN radio schedule a lot. It would be so much easier to make time to listen if it was on at the same time every Sunday (or Saturday), like the NHL Live show on XM204/NHLnetwork. I guess with the Islanders game at 5pm, that wasn’t gonna happen this week. I’ll try to remember that it’s at noon today!

My TiVo schedule says that Versus has WFC on at 8pm on Tuesday, with the NHL draft lottery at 10:30pm for 30 minutes. Do I just record 8-11pm and hope for the best?

If TB wins the lottery and professes love to Hedman, can Garth profess love to Tavares? Or, would that be considered to be in bad form? Hehe.

  12. avatar Coach B says:

Lets end the season with 2 wins and get ready for Tuesday night.

  13. avatar Islander505 says:

And I don’t get the “age” concerns over Matt Gilroy.

Ken Morrow was 24 years old when he first donned an Islander Jersey.

  14. avatar cgs878 says:

As Barry Melrose is to ESPN, so CB is to News12. Way to go, CB!

  15. avatar Coach B says:

Sorry to miss Chris on News 12 but getting rid of Cablevision is a good thing if you can have a dish.

  16. avatar Joe fred va says:

CB, do you have any idea who is running against Kate Murray in the upcoming election? Would it be perceived as a bad sign if no=one has stepped forward to run against her??? Also can you post that picture of the Isle uniform with Taveres name on it, just to get a rise out of everyone, esoecially those superstitous fans.

  17. avatar Paul says:

People (actually one person, with BU ties) have said to me that Gilroy wants to play here, he is scared however, of the lack of finality of the Lighthouse. Basically, this person told me that if they had a deal, he would be here. Gilroy does not want to start here and end up in KC. I am going to assume that Queens would be okay, though.

  18. avatar admin says:

    (16) No word yet on a candidate to run against Kate Murray. I don’t think there are a lot of people lining up because it’s been a Rupblican stronghold.

    (10) Matt Gilroy is going to help the Lighthouse Project get done? Ooh. On that note, I have to catch the train to the radio show.

Enjoy the holiday weekend and the games, everyone. Thank you so much for making this blog what it is. I’ll have a story from the Coliseum later today…CB

  19. avatar JayK says:

    Staten Islander – #3 — it’s on Versus, also streaming on nhl.com

Joe Fred — no candidate yet, but there is zero chance she’s going to run unopposed. She had an opponent two years ago — CB interviewed him a few months ago here — even though there was no chance he was going to win. There is a chance this year, but it’s an uphill climb.

Remember — we’re taking names at beatkate09@yahoo.com. We’re not sure yet what we’re going to do with this growing list of people who’ve sent their names in, but we’ll need a good army to defeat her, even if you’re just promising to tell your friends and acquaintances in the TOH to vote against her. So contact us now!

  20. avatar Islander505 says:

    Paul,
There would be nothing unusual or out of the ordinary if Gilroy was tendered a contract with an escape clause that allowed Gilroy to become a free agent again if the Isles had to move to KC, or anywhere else.

    That is a MINOR detail.

  21. avatar isles72 says:

let the leafs overpay for the college free agents

I like our ‘d’ prospect depth .It has some offense (Ness) , two way (Katic)and some physical (Hamonic/Niemi)

  22. avatar effin5 says:

For all that Gilroy would ask for, I’d go after Scuderi instead. He is a shut down D man and has amazing +/-. It’s been a breakout year for Rob and I’d love to see him back home

  23. avatar Jim says:

Scott Arniel already won Coach of the Year in the AHL. According the press release he had 51 different players on the roster this year, which was second most. I’m assuming Bridgeport was #1.

  24. avatar Islander505 says:

“Matt Gilroy is going to help the Lighthouse Project get done? Ooh.”

    Uh, Yeah!!!
    Why not?
For reasons I have already mentioned…i.e. a demonstration of Wang’s commitment to jobs on LI for LI’ers.
Not to mention the face of Gilroy as the poster child for youth hockey programs on LI. Youth hockey programs that would not exist without the Isles. Youth Hockey programs that continue put kids in college on hockey scholarships.
Youth hockey programs that will likely wither on the vine without the support of the Islander franchise.
Do we want to see Haystack Smith from Overland Park, Kansas win the 2029 Hobey Baker Award?

Matt Gilroy is a walking billboard for keeping the Isles on Long Island.
Matt Gilroy is a manifestation of everything good about the NY Islander franchise operating on LI.

Long Island needs the New York Islanders and Matt Gilroy.
The New York Islanders need the Lighthouse Project so that more Matt Gilroy’s (and Komisarek’s and Higgins and Scuderi’s) can have the opportunity to achieve the level of success that Matt Gilroy has acoomplished

What’s so difficult to understand about that?

  25. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

Except for Gilroy’s family and friends how many people on Long Island even know who he is? I’ll stretch it and say a couple of hundred hard core hockey fans. Those same fans who are for the Lighthouse anyway.

Gilroy’s signing will change nothing except perhaps improve the defense. As far as selling tickets and maybe improving the chances of the Lighthouse getting done that name is Tavares….SW

  26. avatar JayK says:

Pigs have flown. I agree with Sir William.

  27. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Post # 25 sums things up correctly.
    Thank you.
    Go Isles!

  28. avatar Outside says:

the tv guides have yet to update, but yes versus will have the draft lotto on tuesday at 8.. their WEC show was a rerun anyway.. and if they want to be taken seriously a sports netowrk, you cover live stuff ahead of reruns…

  29. avatar Dave says:

    #5:
The Germans didn’t bomb Pearl Harbor, it was the Japanese.

  30. avatar Islander505 says:

What’s “wrong” with Tavares AND Gilroy, SW and Bob Bassen and JK?

In the course of history, most great generals go into a fight with more firepower than the opposition.

Ever hear of “Shock and Awe?”

“Except for Gilroy’s family and friends how many people on Long Island even know who he is?”

Can’t argue with you on that point.
But it sounds like an OUTSTANDING opportunity for a smart PR guy to take on and fix.
Given the potential and solid resume that Gilroy has, sounds to me like a low risk/ high reward opportunity.

  31. avatar Islander505 says:

    Dave #29.
Go rent the movie Animal House, please.

  32. avatar lovin lethbridge says:

I agree Islander505 – Long live the toga and food fight! RIP JB

  33. avatar Jethro09 says:

Maybe its a long-shot, but I don’t see why the Isles are such an unattractive option for Gilroy. The team is young and can offer him, if they choose, as much if not more money than any other team, considering their salary cap situation. He can come right in, play big time NHL minutes and play on a team that is hopefully on the way up.

I think Gilroy is exactly the type of player the Isles should be targeting, along with that other undrafted college kid (Bozak, I believe?). Young kids who are clearly very talented to add to the rest of the prospects and young players on the roster. The Isles don’t need Hossas or Gaboriks. They need Gilroys and Bozaks.

Last season, Dallas signed Fabien Brunnstrom as an undrafted free agent to a contract that pays him $2.225M/season. Surely, the Isles would have to top that for Gilroy or Bozak, but with their cap situation, it wouldn’t be a problem. I would rather see the money thrown at them than at aging vets in their 30′s.

  34. avatar Pat says:

Gilroy has two primary attractions to the Isles

    a) We don’t have to use a pick or trade assets to get him – he is unrestricted

    b) The fact that he is from LI

I really never have seen him play – so have no opinion.

My gut feel is to let Toronto overpay for him. They have to make a big splash up there – and have the $$ to afford a mistake….( in the event it becomes one)

We don’t have that luxury. If we sign him – we better be right about him.

Good luck to him and the Gilroy family! Nice to see a LI boy make good in the NHL !

    Pat

  35. avatar Jethro09 says:

Apparently, Bozak signed with Toronto, so that takes him off the board. Oh well. My bad.

  36. avatar BR says:

CB – Have you heard anything about Matt Martin? On his blog this morning, Mike Fornabaio mentioned that the Tigers have set-up a new row of dressing room stalls to handle the overflow. One of the nameplates says “Martin.” He doesn’t know if it is just a little wishful thinking on the part of the Tigers or what…

  37. avatar DPS says:

You are right CB we will not sign Gilroy because it makes too much sense. Snow must go.

  38. avatar admin says:

Updated (11:17 AM): Joel Rechlicz and Mitch Fritz have been recalled for today’s games. Andy Hilbert and Kyle Okposo are both expected to play.

  39. avatar Islander505 says:

Anyone who thought that The Isles should NOT have drafted Zach Parise “just because of his father” please raise your hands and go stand in the corner.

Anyone who thinks the Isles should NOT sign Matt Gilroy “just because he is from Long Island”, please raise your hands and stand in the other corner.

    Same concept, different circumstances.

Does anyone really want to find themselves whining on this board 5 years from now about an opportunity that slipped through our fingers again?
    For the WRONG reasons?
As we watch Matt Gilroy put up 25+ goals a year as a Dman?
    For somebody else?

Not sayin’ it’s gonna happen that way…but…..How is Zac Parise doin’ these days?

  40. avatar hockeynut says:

Gilroy would be a great addition to the Isles.Wang has had opp to go after other LONG Island kids and passed.By the way Another Long Isalnd Kid was also named to the ALL AMERICAN team James Marcou OF Smithtown. Now Marcou only 20 year old is some one Isles should go after because alot of othe teams are,SO if KOMI HIGGINS SCUDEERI NYSTOM VESCE can al play some wher e else why not here if Wang really wants LONG ISLAND KIDS they are Here

  41. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

Perhaps its time to bring back the NHL’s “territorial rights” ……SW

  42. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Regarding Matt Gilroy…I love the kid, Im a BU grad, I hope he caps off an amazing career with a title tonight

But, as far as him coming to the Island…I think its a pipe dream.

First, he’s 26. I don;t think he is going to want to come somewhere and be part of a rebuild; unless we blow him away with money. And quite frankly, if it comes down to money, Toronto will get him

Second, hes from here. This is not a knock on ANYONE on this board, but playing hockey on LI vs Toronto, if it comes down to a team outside of the playoffs, I think I would choose Toronto

I hope I am wrong it would be a great PR story, but I don’t see it. GO BU

  43. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Sorry for the typo but typo above, he is 24

  44. avatar RichM says:

NY Post is reporting that the Devils are the favorite to land Gilroy. If Lou wants him badly, then he must be good.

  45. avatar Ray says:

Mike Forbanabaio reported that Rechicz & Fritz “had their bags packed” after last nights game, so don’t be surprised if they’re on their way up 95.

  46. avatar Islander505 says:

Brian Burke AND Lou Lamorriello (sp) want Matt Gilroy?

    Hmmmm..

So much for age and ability concerns.
How many Cups have Lou and Brian been “ARCHITECTS” of?

Put on a bow tie Garth, jump on Amtrak, buy some Tic Tac’s and bring Wang’s checkbook to Washington.

Time for the Isles to start dazzling the hockey world…..like we used to.

  47. avatar art says:

Getting back to the draft– Suppose that Tampa gets the first pick and really wants Hedman but realizes that the Isles really want Tavares they could threaten to take Tavares unless we throw in our other first pick from the Campoli deal with the Sens. It would be like a game of chicken. IN other worda how bad do we want Tavares? CB do you agree that this is a possibility that has crossed Garth’s mind?

  48. avatar kabbage says:

Nyles #42, I could be wrong but I think that if Gilroy goes to Toronto, he would be part of a rebuild as well. They got Bozak and Hanson probably because they were promised playing time because those two could only sign an entry level contract. With all the holes in their line up, promising playing time was probably pretty easy for Burke to do.

We have holes in our lineup but we have a means of filling them – draft picks and prospects. Something that Toronto has very little of.

I think it’s a nice story if hometown boys come home to play (for example, where do you think JBo is going to play next year?!).

The lighthouse project is probably not contingent on Matt Gilroy signing with the Islanders. Perhaps a better way to evaluate his value would be is he better than Gervais or Hillen, and if so how much better. We have people within our organization to make thoses evaluations and in recent years, those people have done a pretty good job of evaluations. I heard figures like $3-4 million per year which is ridiculous. Do you think he’s Jeff Finger!

The Islanders should sign Gilroy only if the price is right.

  49. avatar Jim says:

Gaborik is three years older than Gilroy. And even though he’s injury prone, I’d rather take a chance on him, than Gilroy. I don’t understand the obsession with him. If he wasn’t from LI, nobody would want him.

  50. avatar Jim says:

Art – I don’t think Snow has thought about that or even cares. I’m sure if TB wins the lottery and calls Snow and says we’re taking Tavares but if you give us SJ’s #1 we’ll take Hedman, Snow will say thanks but we’ll just take whoever you don’t.

  51. avatar Joe fred va says:

CB, since no-one is currently running against Murray, do you think YOU could run against her??? TOH Supervisor is a nice GIG! I know you will get some serious support and give her a run for her money!! Who wants CB to run for TOH Supervisor, lets see the votes on the blog!!

  52. avatar Jim says:

Franzen resigned with Detroit, believed to be 9 or 10 years.

  53. avatar admin says:

I’m on commercial break with the 1050 ESPN show, but figured I should clear up something. No one is saying the Islanders are not interested in Matt Gilroy. I’m sure they are. What I’ve written is that Gilroy is going to sign somewhere else.

Wow, Detroit with another long-long-long-term deal…CB

  54. avatar JayK says:

Just got back from the Denenberg rally. I didn’t want to post on the thread on it, because nobody will look at it. So I’m putting it here.

It was about 100-125 people in the pouring rain. It was mostly people connected to politics or the unions, but there also were several veterans there…take that, Eden Laikin! The vets are backing this!!

There were a lot of people like me: just backers of the Lighthouse.

The speeches were predictable, but by now, the arguments are clear: a Long Island future that embraces change, or a Long Island future that tries to cling to the past. I won’t rehash them here.

All in all, I was prepared to be depressed by the lousy turnout, but came back fairly happy instead.

If Newsday was covering it, I’d be surprised. The people who were clearly reporters was a woman from News 12 and a guy from the Bellmore weekly paper. But maybe I just didn’t see a Newsday representative.

The unions were out in full force, which is a very good sign. If their membership really gets riled up at Kate Murray, that’s huge.

Remember, we’re taking names at beatkate09@yahoo.com. Sign up now for the final assault on Town Hall (via the ballot box, of course!)

  55. avatar KO21 says:

Can you blame a Long Islander, who is fully aware of the shambles this organization has caused itself, to want to stay away???

I’m sorry to say it but I’m not sure If I were in his skates I would sign with the Isles…They are always in shambles, they need to fix it and regain the trust of everyone…

  56. avatar Swan says:

I’ve seen the light since reading some posts here. Isles need to lose out the rest of the season, even though they clinched last place. No need to get the kids in the habit of winning games or even thinking that they can be a competitive, winning team.

Many believe here that it is better to finish last and potentially get a #1 pick, than to finish 8th and be one and done in the playoffs. Best case, the Isles are a fringe playoff team next season. Therefore, any true Islander fan will root for as many losses as possible next season so we can be in a position to draft Hall in next year’s draft.

We all need to root for as many losses as possible starting with these last two games. Preferably with as large a margin as possible. Don’t give the kids any funny ideas.

On a serious note, no need to overpay for Gilroy. One of Snow’s responsibility is to sign talent while understanding his payroll. If Gilroy really wants to be on LI, he’ll find a way.

If the Isles had Parise, the Lighthouse would still be an issue. The idea of signing a college free agent being a big PR coup or helping to save the franchise is laughable and ridiculous.

  57. avatar Hopeful Fan says:

#54, I hope there weren’t TOO many Islanders’ fans there. The more rabid the activity at a hearing like that, the less credible and the more circus-like it appears to be. There’s nothing worse than, for example, an idiot in a gold wig or a pathetic loser in a prison outfit to turn off the participants of the process.

  58. avatar JayK says:

Hopeful #54 — Hahahah…no, no gold wigs. Lots of decorum. Of course, the fact that we were out in the rain means we’re nuts to begin with.

One question that always bugs me, if asked by a reporter, is: if the Islanders weren’t playing here, would you be in favor of this project? The response is: well, if the Islanders weren’t here, what WOULD be here? If there was a subdivision of hundreds of homes, would I be in favor of tearing it down and building the Lighthouse? No, but that wouldn’t be an issue. If it was an abandoned manufacturing facility, would I be in favor of redeveloping it? Of course..who wouldn’t? But it’s none of those things; it is what it is.

The problem is that the presence of the Islanders gives the NIMBY folks an out: they can recommend a non-workable “solution” — just redo the arena — and still cling to their ideas of “suburban tranquility.”

They should be thankful the Islanders are there, because if they weren’t, and it was even emptier than it is now, they’d have to come up with an idea, which they would not be capable of doing. So instead they can support the arena-only approach, which as we know, isn’t really a solution.

  59. avatar art says:

Jim thanx for the input. I disagree with your point that my scenerio never crossed his mind. If that dealing occured to me why would it not occur to someone whose payed to make this choice probably the biggest of his career if he doesn’t get the first pick. Remember the adage take the best player avaiable. IN my thinking its Tavares and would he be worth the extr 1st pick?

  60. avatar Michael says:

I still say there’s a chance Gilroys an Islander..

  61. avatar BringBackNyles says:

We got CB checking out the blog on break..nice to see he is addicted too :)

  62. avatar Patrick says:

i hope okposo scores at least 2 more goals so we can at least one 20 goal scorer.

  63. avatar Mella says:

Do the Flyers need the game?

  64. avatar Jason W. says:

Why do we hold onto hope Gilroy signs with us? Because we’re fans. We hold onto a lot of irrational ideas when it comes to our sports teams… like the Islanders wining a playoff series.

We arent GM’s. We’re fans and we want whats good for our team. If we get him great. If not, then we worry about the draft. But until he’s signed somewhere else we’ll hold onto the idea that he could be ours.

#39-”Does anyone really want to find themselves whining on this board 5 years from now about an opportunity that slipped through our fingers again?”

I just want Point Blank and the Islanders to be here in 5 years.

  65. avatar djd says:

i know Gilroy is good 9winning the Hobey baker and all) and a good guy but he didn’t impress me much in the semi’s the other night (unlike C. Wilson – what a stud) – i kinda thought he was invisible out there….CB what is he projected to be as a NHL player? Stay at home? puck moving?…defenseman? I just didn’t see what the hype was….thanks

  66. avatar Rob in Massapequa says:

505 continues to make asinine posts about all different sports on all different boards, but has yet to explain why the soon-to-be Norris Trophy winning MATT GILROY has any reason other than the fact that he is from LI to want to come to the Islanders, nor has he explained what kind of skill or upside he has over any other defensive prospect. This from someone that lives in New Mexico. Time to STFU, I think.

  67. avatar Mella says:

LOL-Rob, thats the best post of the day

  68. avatar Mario says:

Garth was just on the pregame show. I think hes aged 20 years. Im glad hes commited to the young guys with a sprinkle of older guys. He wont say who hes drafting but it better be TAVERES111111

  69. avatar Oat says:

Butch goring just said on the pre game show he thinks Streit will be the next captain of the Islanders, I think that’s a good idea =)

  70. avatar Oat says:

Butch Goring said on the pre game show that he thinks Streit will be the Islanders next captain, that seems like a good captain since we don’t need a short term situation

  71. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Butch Goring just said on the TV show that Streit should be the next Captain. I think its a good idea

  72. avatar The Real Vukota says:

Did Butch Goring mention anything about the next captain on the pregame? :)

  73. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    Glad you got my joke

  74. avatar Youth Isle says:

    1 – nil

  75. avatar Staten Islander says:

What a great goal by bergie

  76. avatar Ben says:

Butch Goring has been pushing Streit as Captain for weeks now.

Does anyone know if there is a quote that has Gilroy saying he’s been a long time Islander fan?

If he’s not and he’s been a lifelong fan of another team that’s interested in him now, he’s going to look long and hard at that direction. Not every player from Long Island is an Islander fan.

  77. avatar Youth Isle says:

    -76-
hey i dont know if gilroy is a fan or not but does it matter? wouldnt anyone opt to come back home to play in front of hometown fans. i will tell you i would certainly return to ny to play with those rangers.

  78. avatar michael says:

“i dont set any goals for goals” – sean bergenheim

    quote of the year?

  79. avatar BR says:

    (48) – I’d actually be very surprised if JBo signs with Edmonton.

  80. avatar alex says:

CB, any word on how that rally went?

  81. avatar Lorne says:

I too noticed Snow looked really aged on the pregame show earlier.

  82. avatar eric says:

got my blue and orange glasses on.
    it’s all good boys.

  83. avatar upstatenyifan says:

#78-That sounds like something Yogi would say.

  84. avatar eric says:

    jackman !!!

  85. avatar Matt says:

how many 4th liners does one team need? we already have jackman and park locked up for next year. do we really need all three of jeff tambellini, nate thompson and andy hilbert to take up roster spots?

  86. avatar Chickendirt says:

    Bailey gets another point.

    Ya know what?

That guy has had a really good year for a nineteen year old. I have a feeling he come back next year a much better player. I have no doubt that kid is gonna be a really good player at this level.

  87. avatar patrick f says:

Those American flags outside the colliseum need to be replaced, they’re all beat up and frayed.

  88. avatar Swan says:

Good loss. The losing continues and the Team kept it close. No need to win meaningless games in April. Gotta think long-term and finish 30th next season in order to be in a position to draft Hall in next year’s draft.

  89. avatar dedshark says:

    Dave #29.
Go rent the movie Animal House, please.

HAHAHAHAHAH as soon as I read the german bombed pearl harbor joke I just scrolled down waiting for someone to say it was the Japanese HAHAHAHAH

  90. avatar Matt says:

gordon putting his boy andy hilbert out on the ice when we need a goal with under 10 seconds left! this is why this organization will never be good again. our roster is full of castoffs like hilbert besides a few players. keep signing other teams rejects isles!

sorry for the rant but it is frustrating.

  91. avatar Dave says:

Calm down Matt. These games don’t matter so why not experiment a little bit?

  92. avatar Dave says:

    #89:
You’re right, went RIGHT over my head. :P

  93. avatar Spartiarti from RVC says:

todays game was good effort by the isles. I think difference was Biron was just better than Danis.

Next year we should have DP back and well be all set.

Isles dont need to get a guy like Gaborik. Rather try my luck with talented guy like Hudler from detroit, whom like streit can get more responsibility on Isles and shine.

  94. avatar Jim says:

#65: Don’t get me started on Colin Wilson…I was practically praying the Isles to draft him last year with the #7. He is a Doug Gilmour type player. Never going to score 40, but he’s a huge assist man, works the corners very well, gets the BIG goals and goes to the front of the net and takes punishment.

As for Gilroy, he is a VERY GOOD, fundamental puck moving, joining the rush defenseman. He would fit in perfectly with Gordon’s system of the d-men jumping in. He would step in and be a top 4, imo, right away for the Isles.

I am a BU season ticket holder, though I live in NJ, and have had more than ample opportunities to watch these kids, as well as Trivino. I can that I would LOVE to see Gilroy here, in Sept, with Tavares, but I am not so sure it’s going to happen.

  95. Islander505 (13) – I was pretty shocked to learn that Morrow was drafted in 76 a year or so ago. I was 8 when he joined the team and had no clue that they drafted him before he started college. (10) (24) – Paying a player straight out of college $500K+ a year is not going to do anything to help demonstrate that Wang is pro-Long Island. When people talk about keeping jobs on Long Island, they are talking about the $50-100K a year type jobs, not about a rich hockey player. Gilroy would be a feel good story who hopefully contributes to the team.

Swan (56) Who is Hall? First time I’ve heard the name mentioned. Tell us a story.

Patrick (87) – I noticed that last week. Very sad and to be honest, completely unacceptable.

  96. avatar JayK says:

Brian #95 and Patrick #87 — that’s not the Islanders’ job. It’s the job of SMG.

You probably realize that, but given that this is an Islanders blog, I wanted to make that clear. SMG drains so much money out of this rathole and can’t even put back decent American flags.

  97. avatar Ian says:

Any doubters on Matt Gilroy should take a look at his cool and calm play on the tying goal in the final minute of the frozen four finals.

  98. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

    #95… who is Hall?

The best player in the OHL.

  99. avatar Brad says:

He and his father both know what a mess this franchise is (remember that they are Islander fans). They know how clueless Garth and Charles are. He will never sign with the isles if wang ang garth are running the show like anyone else with options and a decent agent. btw Mr. Gilroy was heavily involved with youth sports on LI (thats why a lot of guys know the family), He started a summer basketball league in my town in honor of his son Tim who passed away (Mr. Gilroy was a star bb player at st. john’s). They are a great family. Congrats to all the BU fans out there (and to any of his brothers or friends who might read this).

  100. avatar Brad says:

sorry to break a rule and post twice… forgot to mention The Gilroys are big islander fans. 100%, I’ve seen Matt and his Brothers around in isles gear my whole life in town. they played out of Cantiague Park LI so I saw them there in hat day swag etc. My dad also played pick up basketball with Matt’s Dad, My Dad worked for the islanders, They had six boys in the family that played hockey, so yeah hockey and the islanders came up every once and a while.
