POINT BLANK READER POLL: Tavares or Hedman
A one-Comment per reader thread

by admin on April 15th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

This is very cut-and-dried. I want to make this simple.

The Islanders now have the first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. There will not be a trade. (Even if you think there will be, for the purpose of this poll assume there will not). Brian Burke has nothing to offer, and he knows it. At least he got his name in the media again.

The Islanders will not take Matt Duchene or anyone else at No. 1.

It comes down to John Tavares or Victor Hedman. Your only choice of answers is one or the other, followed by your 100-word (or less) reason for your selection:

Who do you want the NYI to take with the first overall pick?

John Tavares or Victor Hedman.

One comment per reader, please. No exceptions. Let’s see as many fans as possible join in. Tavares or Hedman.

I do not even think this is up for discussion! JOHN TAVARES!

  2. avatar Mike from Philly says:

John Tavares – Does anything need to be said. This kid has been labeled as the next great franchise all-star. The Islanders are starved for a player of his calibur, someone that puts the franchise back on the map, someone who can help lead this team back to Stanley Cup Glory.

    Tavares or Bust!!!

  3. avatar murph says:

TAVARES. Announce it now. Sell tix. Don’t take calls from Brian Burke.

  4. Tavares….I can only hope…

  5. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

    JT

  6. avatar Kevin Plaza says:

i think this kid tavares can mean as much to this organization, as crosby meant to the pens when he was drafted…. i think its a no brainer, we need a franchise sniper, and thats exactly what this kid is.. hedman looks like a solid d man but right now we need someone that can bring excitment to this organization, and goals creates excitment, so i say take Tavares with the number 1

  7. avatar Jethro09 says:

    John Tavares.

This is a no-brainer. Tavares is the best player in the draft, a franchise center, a goal-scorer who will improve the team on the ice and help the team sell tickets again.

Victor Hedman is going to be terrific, but he won’t help sell tickets and the Isles brand like Tavares will.

  9. avatar Isles fan in Scotland says:

    John Tavares.

  10. avatar Jack says:

    Tavares
If Gordon and Snow are determined to build an exciting brand of hockey, they don’t think more than twice about it.

  11. avatar kevin fitz says:

    Victor Hedman.

I say Hedman because he is such a beast on D and players like him do not come around very often. Let’s face it, JT type players come along every 2 or 3 years. Lidstroms and Prongers come every 10 years. Now I will not be upset if they take JT because he is a stud too and will be great face of the franchise. We cannot lose either way!

  12. avatar Conor says:

John Tavares. We need a Bossy or Trottier like scorer for this team.

  13. avatar Phil says:

    John Tavares!

  14. avatar Healy says:

    Tavares.

Reasoning: Isles need help everywhere but they could use the sizzle he brings, especially from the Canadian media which has been less then respectful to the Islanders recently. Also, they don’t flash a red light and play a song when a defensemen makes a good play, the Coliseum could use JT.

  15. avatar matt c says:

Tavares….Hedman is not potvin or neidermeyer

  16. avatar bergie20 says:

i love hedman but i vote for tavares b/c of his marketability. chris – are you saying that nyi definitely will not deal the pick?

  17. avatar Pat says:

Tavares, and by the way tell Burke we would like to move up also to his pick at 7. What do you what Brian!! HA, HA

  18. avatar Tim from Islip says:

Tavares! Its time for a new franchise player. He will put people in seats next year.

  19. avatar Cain says:

I want Hedman – he’ll be on the ice more (with Streit!) than JT and improve the team over the long haul. JT might short circuit the rebuild with his scoring, but not dramatically improve the overall team enough to consistently contend.

    Give it one more year.

  20. avatar jonsson3 says:

    JAY TEE

  21. avatar johnRVC says:

I want the Islanders to draft Tavares. the Isles have big Dmen in Sutton and Witt, and puck movers in hillen and Streit. there are no true snipers comming via free agency anytime soon. take tavares and trade the sharks first pick to montreal in a package for Higgins to help the wing and roll 2 lines of tavares higgins hunter, and okposo, bailey begenhiem. Overpay for Komisarek

  22. avatar Jamie says:

Heaven Must be Missing an Angel by…TAVARES

  23. avatar Alex Kinkead says:

John Tavares! Im looking to see how the “votes” stack up.

  24. avatar Netminder39 says:

    John Tavares

He can help the team score, he will be a leader on this team. He’s committed to winning a Cup when he’s selected. He will make his teammates better. He gives the Islanders an identity along with Okposo, Bailey, and DiPietro. He has a swagger, or arrogance that is backed up by his performance that fans will come pay to see. He will win a Cup for the Islanders.

  25. avatar Joe says:

    John Tavares

Offensive star they haven’t had since Palffy, PR reasons (attendance, lighthouse, etc.), sell jersey’s, bring the fans out, and we already have a decent defense when everyone’s healthy, and no where in our entire organization is there a goal scorer even close to this magnitude. Plus, D-Men usually take a little more time to develop, and the last thing the Isles have is time.

  26. avatar Ian says:

Tavares is my choice for #1. However, if Snow picks Hedman I would not be completely disappointed.

  27. avatar Matt Scordato says:

John Tavares, is there really anyone else?

  28. avatar edturner says:

Tavares…………..but you know Garth is going to trade the pick.

  29. avatar beatlebailey says:

Tavares with the first pick overall…..if they love Hedman trade down to 2 which would mean hoping toronto can trade up with tampa bay

  30. avatar Stan Fischler's Boy says:

    VICTOR TAVARES!!!!

  31. avatar Jim says:

    Hedman

You can’t teach size and he skates like the wind. I don’t think Tavares will be anything more than Dany Heatley, and he’s not a franchise player, he’s a complimentary player. Besides, they can take Taylor Hall or Kiril Kabanov next year, both of whom will be better than JT.

  32. avatar mtrico says:

As musch as I like the idea of a world class defenseman joining the fold, I will have to go with JT. This team is desperately in need of a marketable superstar. Hopefully Tavares is that guy.

  33. avatar Helene says:

    John Tavares.

  34. avatar Keith says:

    Tavares

  35. avatar Devon says:

    Victor Hedman.
The old adage is “Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships.” It’s true, right now, that the Islanders need both more than ever. But if Garth Snow is committing to starting from scratch and developing a Cup-caliber hockey team, Hedman is the right pick.
This organization has a shocking lack of high-level defensive depth. Everyone on the current roster, save for Mark Streit, is no better than a third-pairing defenseman, and nobody in the system appears to be much more. Hedman immediately gives this team a defensive credibility they so lacked.
While the team certainly needs help on the other side of the ice, players already in the system, like Bailey, Nielsen, even Corey Trivino and Kyril Petrov are high-upside players. We don’t have one player with that upside on the blueline.

  36. avatar Matt says:

    John Tavares

  37. avatar GilliesKO says:

Tavares. Light the lamp, energize the fan base (and Lets go Caps).

  38. avatar Darren says:

Defense is a cornerstone of a franchise. But this team needs to put fans in the seats and pucks in the net. John Tavares please!

  39. avatar Joe P. says:

Tavares simply because Dmen take too long to develop. With the UFA age where it is right now, by the time Hedman is nearing his peak, he’d be eligible for UFA. On the other hand, we’ll see an immediate impact right away and hopefully Snow can then lock him up long-term once JT establishes himself.

  40. avatar TheDawg says:

Taveres, will sell tickets and score goals…2 things the islanders can’t do.

  41. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Tavares- Plain and Simple we have the best pick he is the best player available

  42. avatar tond24 says:

    John Tavares..lets go already

  43. avatar Ziggy16 says:

    John Tavares

  44. avatar MikeF says:

John Tavares – We haven’t had a real scoring threat since Palffy, and the dynasty islanders would have been nothing without bossy & trottier. This is the New NHL – offense offense

  45. avatar isles316 says:

    Tavares

  46. avatar Sean says:

    Tavares

  47. avatar Matt.W says:

    John Tavares

Scoring and Marketing would help the Isles big time and maybe help push the Lighthouse through the RED tape BS. Isles need Tavares plain and simple. No disrespect to Hedman.

  48. avatar Pez says:

    TAVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. avatar Blizzard says:

    Taveres

Because our leading scorer this year was a free agent defensmen

  50. avatar Will Teese says:

    Tavares!!!

He is a pure goal scorer, and he raises his play for the moment, case in point, the world juniors. We havent had a scorer like him since ziggy

    JOHN TAVARES OR BUST !!!

He has proven to be an outstanding talent that rises to the occasion and performs when he is needed to. He has put teams on his back and carried them to victory. This is what we need. Lead by example, with your deeds, not cheap words. He is a marketing machine, canada loves him, and so should long island. DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THE FRANCHISE AND THE FANS. DRAFT TAVARES.

  56. avatar Carmine says:

Hedman, defencemen like that don’t come around very often.

  57. avatar Joey303 says:

    Im not wavering….Hedman.

  58. avatar Justin Marques says:

    John Tavares:
    1. Skill set – premier talent in the draft
    2. Marketability – sale of jerseys, increased season ticket sales, possible helper in Lighthouse Project? somehow?
    3. Flash-factor: first extremely flashy player since Palffy. Maybe our next Mike Bossy? That would be nice…
    4. Package our late first round pick, early second round pick, and a second round pick next year to move up to middle-round and grab Simon Despres (6’4″ – 210 lbs) and considered a great all-around, first pairing defenseman. We now have Tavares and a great defenseman to boot.

  59. avatar Larry says:

    Hedman

I believe you buid from the goal out, and I think over time he will be the beter player, also I know Tavares doesn’t have a problem coming here now, but once he turns 26 and is a UFA I bet he leaves

  60. avatar Dally Mac says:

    John Tavares.
Plain and simple. Although couldn’t a deal invovling Streit be put together for Hedman too. Just saying.

  61. avatar mrlbem says:

    Tavares

    Sniper over defense
    North American over Euro

My one hesitation–is there something about Tavares’ game that concerns the Islanders’ braintrust (e.g., not the greatest skater)?

  62. avatar EAF says:

    Tavares – goals, tixs, PR

  63. avatar Brian says:

    Tavares

  64. avatar islestherapy says:

    tavares

  65. avatar Giaco says:

    Johnny T.

This teams need fresh air. It needs a injection of life. It needs a constant scoring threat. It needs someone to score over 20 goals. Yes, defense wins championships but you also need offense to go along with that defense. The choice has become clear. John Tavares.

    Thank You.

  66. avatar LSJ says:

Streit is not going to be traded for the pick to grab Hedman. Just saying.

I look at the history of free agent D taken first and it seems like the returns are much spottier. I think the consensus pick has to be Tavares.

  67. avatar doc says:

    Tavares:
He’s NHL ready… Defensemen take a bit longer to develope. Pronger wasn’t Pronger for a few years. Tavares can probably be as good as Stamkos was in “his” first year.

    TAVARES!!!

  68. avatar kabbage19 says:

John Tavares, because I think that he fits in with what we are doing. I think that the surprise (because there always is one) will be who we pick second (#30)! Besides after we sign Gilroy, where does Hedman fit next year?

  69. avatar Sweeney says:

    John Tavares

  70. avatar Kristie says:

I’m so torn on this one, to be honest I’d be thrilled with either one.

It’s a toss up for me, they are both POTENTIAL stars at their positions. Something the Isles lack, pick one of them and the Isles made the right choice.

I’m glad I don’t have to make the choice!

  71. avatar Sab says:

Tavares for the following (I was fortunate enough to catch him at the Worlds as well): He’s a winner, improves the players around him, draws so much attention at times it frees up his linemates (insert Kyle here), marketing potential, power play opportunist, future face of Canadian Hockey, etc…

  72. avatar Macch says:

Tavares… Take the best player available

  73. avatar Corduroy828 says:

Tavares. This team needs immediate recognition. If Tavares becomes a superstar, it will give the NHL a reason to notice the Isles again and hopefully that will help keep the team on Long Island.

  74. avatar L.J. says:

    John Tavares

  75. avatar Steve says:

JT all the way. I believe we have a good core of D men. As Kenny said there is only one Potvin. Hedman is a good and will be a great player but as mentioned before D men take longer to mature into great players and by the time they do they are free agents.

  76. avatar Joe says:

Tavares, no two ways about that.

  77. avatar Seth says:

    John Tavares.

After spending about 2 hours watching video of each of Tavares/Hedman. This one is a lot closer than I would have originally anticipated. Hedman is awesome. I would love to have him on the blueline, but one thing the NYI brass has been able to do is to cobble together solid d corps during the post 93 era. With a healthy DP & dependable backup, Witt/Martinek/Streit/Sutton/Gervais/Meyer/Hillen/MacDonald/Kohn/Katic? along with another possible UFA steal should give the NYI a very solid D/G combo. Up front is where we have been lacking forever. Tavares has been THE guy forever. When a generational franchise player of this calibre comes along, you take him. Tavares would give the NYI great talent up the middle (Tavares/Bailey/Neilsen/Weight). Adding some more skill with size through the draft/trade/UFA would give us a lineup that could challenge for a playoff spot next year.

  78. avatar Brian says:

I agree with Justin (63) on his first three points. Not exactly sure about his fourth because I don’t know enough about the rest of the players in the draft.

I think Tavares would put the Islanders back on the map, not only locally but nationally. It would bring energy to the franchise that they haven’t had in a long time. I don’t see Hedman having the same impact even if he ends up being the better player in five years.

  79. avatar Nor says:

    Tavares.

Hedman may turn out to be the better player, but Tavares brings a package of intangibles that are priceless, and will make the Islanders relevant again.

  80. avatar Quez says:

J.T. in the Hizzy! Drafting him can only help in the future recruitment of F.A.’s. I’m confident VH will be a cornerstone Dman, but i’m sure a Hossa, Gaborik, or even a Kovalchuk(next yr) would be more inclined to sign with a team who has a guy who could dramatically increase their own totals playing along side them. Draft J.T. and maybe sign Jay Bo and all of a sudden, L.I. is not such a bad place to play!

  81. avatar Lee says:

    Victor Hedman.

Gotta build from the goal out.

  82. avatar slsangus says:

Tavares. A decent UFA defenseman signing gives the Isles competent defense – they don’t need a star on the blueline to be competitive. But you cannot win in the NHL if your top goal scorer doesn’t even crack 20 goals.

  83. avatar PTA says:

Tavares since they need the excitement of a goal scorer to sell tickets which will help support the lighthouse….

  84. avatar Potvinstyle33 says:

    Tavares

I won’t be devestated with Hedman, but this team needs an offensive star for more reasons that just goal scoring.

  85. avatar Michael B. says:

John Tavares, for sure. Victor Hedman is a stud, but you can’t pass on an elite goal scorer like Tavares who will center your top line and put up incredible numbers.

He’d be the face of the franchise and bring credibilty to the organization.

  86. avatar Mike says:

Taveres. We have a good, solid group of defensemen locked up for next year or longer (Streit, Witt, Sutton, Hillen, Gervais, Martinek, Meyer, Ness (in a few years). That’s a group of defensemen — good mix of skill/toughness — that can take a team far into the playoffs. We are thinner at forward, and in desperate need of a #1 center (and have been since we traded Turgeon).

Please, Garth, do the smart thing: Take JT.

  87. avatar Isle_in_LA says:

JT. It’s been way too ing since we’ve had a legitimate goal scorer. Period.

  88. avatar bossy4president says:

    Tavares is a MUST !!!!!!!

You get franchise offensive players through the draft. Like Kenny Morrow said, “There’s only one Potvin”. Defense you can always go out and buy. Besides I honestly DON’T hate what we have now on D (well, except Pock). There’s way too much hype over this kid to pass him up. I ‘ll tell you something though….if the Leafs or Habs had the first pick…..Tavares would be a landslide first pick and the second coming of #99.

  89. avatar Alex says:

    JOHN TAVARES

I don’t see how anyone could include Streit in a deal to draft Hedman as well, that is just ridiculous. Streit put up 56 points in 74 game this year and was +6 on a team that allowed 78 more goals than they scored, being the first defenseman since POTVIN to lead the team in scoring. You think Hedman will do that in his first few years in the league? I highly doubt it. Additionally, Hedman did look a little soft. With a healthy DP and a healthy Sutton (who will be playing for a contract), along with Gervais’ continued offensive development under Streit’s tutelage, Tavares is the best possible piece we can add to turn that goals scored and win/loss differential around!

  90. avatar Steve K. says:

    tavares

  91. avatar Sarge says:

    Tavares.

For a team that hasn’t had a scorer since we traded Ziggy for NOTHING ten years ago, it’s about time we got a promising offensive talent in the draft. Learn from our past mistakes…take the scorer.

  92. avatar thomaskarl says:

Tavares, and I want Buthchie Goring up on the dais, to hand the kid a jersey with 91 on the back!

  93. avatar Dadi says:

Victor Hedman. This kid is something special…

  94. avatar -Big Van Vader says:

    JOHNNY T!!!!!!

    Make it so…..

  95. avatar Yanks26 says:

John Tavares. He could possibly be the guy, the face of the franchise that this team has not had in a very long time. Plus we need much needed scoring help, the isles have not had a legit scorer since Ziggy IMO. We need the new “JT”

  96. avatar John M says:

    John Tavares.

The Islanders have lacked a sniper since Palffy’s departure. Additionally, we have not had a “true” offensive #1 center since Pierre Turgeon (ignore Yashin). All of this of course is pending his potential is reached, but I believe his talent level is worth the risk.

  97. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

    Tavares. Plain and simple.

The PR factor and the buzz he would generate would be just what this team needs. More importantly, the Isles have not had a sniper since Ziggy and JT’s upside is even higher. Add him to our youthful mix of Okposo, Nielsen, Bergy, Bailey, etc and there is genuine reason to believe the tide is turning for this team.

Take Tavares. . electrify the Island.

  98. avatar Easyisle says:

Tavares. Admittedly, I have only seen him play in the WJC for parts of 3 different games, but this team needs an identity (not an identity change, which implies you already have one) and a sniper type does that more than what looks like a very solid all-around d-man would. LIke some others have said: you can grab a very good d middle of the first round, but this type of player is a rare opportunity.

  99. avatar Robby D says:

Tavares! There is no other choice. Every great sports executive in every sport always says the same thing about drafts, YOU DRAFT THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE! John Tavares is the best player in the draft which means you draft Tavares. Why make this complicated? Here is why:

    1) He greatly improves our team.
    2) He is a face to the franchise.
    3) He puts fans in the stands.
    4) He is a marketable player.
    5) He is winner with a great attitude
    6) He will play here. No questions asked.
    7) Our team will be respected again.
    8) The Lighthouse deal will get done!

The fans, us, are owed this player. We have waited this long. We haven’t had a forward this good since Ziggy! Make the decision now.

  100. avatar Cahoward28 says:

Tavares!!! I’m just too scared that a defenseman is going to take most of his pre-UFA time developing and then leave us without the benefit of the years when he is dominant. To me, that makes this a no brainer. In 1973, this is a tougher choice in my mind, but now it is TAVARES!!!

  101. avatar JLaMonica16 says:

    Tavares

The Franchise needs both, but the spark that this team will get from a talent-plenty o-my-did-you-see-that sniper is irreplaceable. Great Hockey move, Imperative business move

  102. John Tavares is rated #1 to go for a reason. Most organizations like the NYI need a sniper. Our best player this year was Mark Streit. That doesn’t say much for our 15 forwards that played this year. Although I think there is much to do after bring in Tavares. He’s a huge step in the right direction. Ticket sales will go up. Free agents might want to sign here if he performs well. Heck, we might even get the Lighthouse approved now. If indeed, Tavares is taken, and put on the wing along side Weight, I hope that Garth looks for another proven winger to fit that line. If Garth has any doubts on who to take, all he has to do is read this blog and he will get his answer. The fans speak for itself. Listen to us Garth!!!!!

    PICK

    JOHN

    TAVARES

    !!!!!!!

  103. avatar Andreas the Badger says:

Hedman. Smooth-skating, big Swede with lots of upside. JT will be a fine pick too, but I just don’t see the same upside. There’s a reason 9 of 10 scouts will go for JT. 10 of 10 scouts have seen him in the very heavily scouted OHL. I’m letting the doubt of that 10th scout who’s seen both over the course of a full season decide.
However, I totally see the argument in bringing in JT for instant recognition. Hope it’s not like when I piss my pants to feel warm.

  104. avatar Zigmund says:

Tavares. Thats it end of discussion.

  105. avatar Mike says:

Tavares. You can’t win if you don’t score. Even teams with the best defenses and goaltenders will give up goals. Mark Streit even said it, we need a sniper.

  106. avatar Ajax says:

    John Tavares

  107. avatar Mike_In_brooklyn says:

The Isle have no other choice but to make JT the #1 pick.

  108. avatar Tom says:

Tavares, we are pretty solid on D But I can see Snow trying to Trade up in the 1st round with the lower pick

  109. avatar Mark In Ottawa says:

It would seem to me that Tavares is the
better opportunity to make OTHERS on the roster better.

Hedman eats up the minutes on the blueline, however, with THREE second rounders, we should be able to turn two of those into defenders to eat up those minutes.

  110. avatar love me some sillinger says:

Is there anyone we could trade to Tampa Bay to get their pick and take Tavares AND Hedman??? No? :) Okay, then I’d go with Tavares.

  111. avatar PSM1966 says:

    John Tavares!
June 26th is my birthday and I get what I want on my birthday!

  112. avatar Kevin says:

Tavares–I’ve been following this kid for almost 3 years. We don’t need to project the ‘value’ of speed or size. He is a Superstar. He broke Wayne Gretzky’s OHL Goal Scoring record for 16 yr olds & hasn’t had much to play for since..15 pts at the WJC..Sick! He is in the Ovechkin, Kovalchuk,Spezza, Crosby category. Automatic star from Day 1.

  113. avatar txdbog says:

    Tavares

He will be like what Jeter brought to the Yankees, but with more offense. I believe he will be THAT important to the isles.

  114. avatar Richie66 says:

Tavares , Islanders scored only 201 goals this year (2nd worst in the league), you can shut down an opponent but if you cant score yourself you will not win games

  115. avatar Dan from NJ says:

John Tavares….No question the Isles need a player that can help put fans in the seat and pucks in the net. We didn’t have a 20 goal scorer this year for crying out loud! With Tavares, Bailey, Okposo, and a free agent (Gaborik anyone) we can be a legit playoff team next year.

  116. avatar Lorne says:

To sum it up in one word Tavares.

As great as Hedman is or can be, I think the D is one of our strong points especially with Mark Streit. Even Streit who most likely will be our next captain lobbied for Tavares.

  117. avatar Cary says:

    Tavares.

Scoring, scoring, scoring. Franchise player, true # 1 center, excitement, good attitude.

Also, Hedman got Rookie of the Year but his stats weren’t off-the-charts.

    Let’s do this!

  118. avatar Mike T says:

John Tavares, and frankly I don’t even think they can draft Hedman. If the Isles were to not take Tavares- the disappointment / anger would be overwhelming. Even if you thought Hedman was the better player, he would face heavy scrutiny and disappointment from the fan base before even stepping on the ice.

  119. avatar Chickendirt says:

In Logans piece last night I thought Snow made it pretty clear he was picking one of those two. Very doubtfull he trades this pick. Tavares could get the Isles back in the post season in two to three years.

Lets not forget that they changed the rules in Juniors to draft Tavares at the age of 14. This kid could be the next Gretzky/Lemiux/Crosby and he’s right in our lap.

This guy could easily turn Okposo’s potential of a 30 goal scorer into a 50 goal scorer. He’ll change the dynamic of our forward lines and make everyone else much better.

    TAKE TAVARES!!!!!

  120. avatar mw147 says:

Tavares – we need both but we need the scorer more.

  121. avatar Justin says:

    Tavares
Brings hope, positive media back to NYI

  122. avatar IsleofNJ says:

    JT
    Can’t win games without goals.
    Can’t get points without wins.
Can’t make playoffs without plenty o’ points.
    YOU GET THE IDEA.

  123. avatar KLAATU, TAVARES, NIKTO! says:

    Tavares.

  124. avatar michael says:

tavares. we drafted josh bailey for a reason. you can pick up stud defenseman in the 2nd or 3rd round.. and you can get into a winter classic with a guy like tavares wearing your sweater. its the only logical choice.

  125. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

Tavares – Excitement, Immediate impact and much needed for this franchise.

Gretzky said it the best. You can teach how to be better hockey player, you cant teach someone how to be natural goal scorer.

Hedman no doubt will be good but Islanders need to put on map quickly. John Tavares was only guys talked about during world juniors. What makes you think it wont be same when he hits the NHL.

  126. avatar Jamie says:

John Tavares! My reason is simple “HE IS THE NEXT ONE”

  127. avatar Tony F. says:

Does John Tavares really want to play for the Islanders? What scares me is Burke convincing JT to hold out and not join us, and not just Burke but all the Canadian media.

    TAVARES

You can fill the gaps on D through Free Agency. Sure you will have to pay alot for a solid D Man, but you would pay a lot more for a solid Sniper in this market. This Franchise needs a sniper and a name. Tavares doesn’t have a swedish accent either.

  132. avatar mike says:

    TAVARES Period!
We have Striet go after Komoserik or Gilroy.

  133. avatar Lance79 says:

What a wonderful dilemma to have. I say:

    Hedman

You can build a team around KO, Bailey and sign free agents to have adequate offense but you absolutely have to have a rock back there on defense to help out Ricky. By the time Streit’s contract is up in 4 years, Hedman will already be our #1 dman if not sooner.

JT simply doesn’t electrify me like KO does. Yes they’re different players but I’m concerned about comments on him lacking foot speed and looking disinterested at times, esp. in the OHL playoffs. I don’t want a home-grown post-2002 Yashin, we’ve been there before. I will however very happily eat crow if JT finds great chemistry and fills the net with KO riding shotgun.

  134. avatar StevieL says:

Tavares for so many reasons! A North American Star who puts a face on the Isles. He makes Okposo a 40 goal scorer! He brings fans and more pressure on Nassau to keep the team! Marketability that this team desperately needs! We have Streit and have a better chance at a D-man ufa. Not many cheap goal scorers around!
Also much less downside risk. If you draft Tavares and he is a bust. all the scouts loose credibility too. Pass on Tavares and have Hedman become a bust!Well God help this franchise. it will never recover!

  135. avatar MotorCityIslesFan says:

Love Hedman, but Tavares and his scoring is what this team needs.

  138. avatar nystrom23 says:

They have to draft Taveres no question about…I agree with my fellow fans that this guy can turn this franchise around the same way crosby did with the pens and the same way ovie did with the caps…kid as everything the isles have been missing since the days of bossy, potvin and trots

  139. avatar Frank James says:

    Tavares.

We may be able to overpay for a big time defenseman.

We will never be able to attract a big time scorer.

  140. avatar Jeff in Oswego says:

  141. avatar alex says:

John Tavares, we need a superstar on this team for the media, fans and league to look at. We also need to put fans back into the seats (not to mention a big boost for cause to build the lighthouse)!

  142. avatar Will says:

The last few months I’ve been saying Hedman just because of his skill set at 6’5″ however the more and more I see comments on here and looking at the foward depth chart I can’t say no to 1-2 punch like Okposo and Tavares for several years to come.

    My vote – Tavares

  143. avatar Tony says:

I honestly would be thrilled with either player

but after seeing this team not have a 20 goal scorer this year….

John Tavares is a no brainer

  144. avatar Goon says:

John Tavares! Look what Crosby and Ovechkin did for their teams. What defenseman does that?

  145. avatar IslesFan13inFla says:

    Like I said before, Tavares.

He’s a game changing goal scorer that will make everyone around him a better player.

  146. avatar Mary in 117 says:

    Tavares.

  147. avatar mike says:

This is so silly as there is no debate here. Wake the f up Garth! Announce Tavares is the man NOW!!!!

  148. avatar Andre Legault says:

    TAVARES.

And let’s make sure we also have Komisarek on board come first of july.

And why not Gilroy. Now that we know we won’t draft Hedman, we can significantly improve our def group by getting komi & gilroy.

Talk about an improved roster if we can get that done.

  149. avatar Hockey1919 says:

Hedman. Not another defensemen with size, skating and shot projected in the top of next year’s draft either. Already passed on a top defensemen to pick a center in the first round. Longer to mature? This team is not built for next season. Will eat up minutes on PK, PP and even strength. 3 to 4 offensive UFA available each year and only one defensemen.

However, if I’m Snow I take Tavares. Easier decision to defend, gives the fans immediate gratification, addresses immediate scoring need, performs under pressure, great PR and I can’t stand Brian Burke.

Take either and be happy since there is no way I have seen enough for me to make the right call. It is finally a no lose situation for the Islanders.

  150. avatar Tom D 37 says:

Tavares. I know JT more than even his own family. This is a bold statement, but I think he has the potential to be the best ever. His uncle is the greatest Lacrosse player ever, and he learned a lot from him. No one had a better first 16 years of hockey than JT, the last 2 he has been preparing for the NHL instead of trying to dominate junior hockey. He’s been working on his skating, defensive play, endurance, and trying to keep his muscle from the off-season by working out during the regular season.

  151. avatar Fist of Gillies says:

I love this talk about Defense and Potvin, but the Isles didn’t win anything until they drafted a guy who scored named Mike Bossy. We need everything, so get the best available talent.

    JOHN TAVARES.

  152. avatar Brian S says:

  153. avatar Mick Vukota says:

The potential of having a franchise player such as Tavares is unlimited.

  154. avatar HyeDray says:

    Tavares.

I will be at NVMC for the draft. I am praying it will be Tavares. Not because Hedman would be bad, but we need the kind of help Tavares offers more IMO.

    Further—from a business standpoint.

    1) Tavares will put the NYI on the hockey map, and NY sports scene map.

    2) At the draft party the Isles would be wise to have someone in attendance to sew on #91 and Tavares Isles jerseys. Sales will go through the roof in the first week.

    3) Speaking of generating revenue for Mr. Wang and the franchise—the announcement of Tavares sells 1,000 new season tix for 09-10.

Lastly—Tavares gets it done on the ice.

    A no brainer.

  155. avatar LooNTooNs says:

    JT Please

  156. avatar Bruce says:

I would take Hedman, 6’6 18 yr old defensemen only come around once in a blue moon. I would then use the other 1st round pick and one of the 2nd rounders to move up to the middle of the 1st round and take a forward. It may not be the popular decision and may not work out in the 1st year but in the long run I think it would be the better pick.

  157. avatar JC Frank says:

Tavares — He just seems to be the more ‘it’ player, the one who could step up and make the play when needed.

  158. avatar TradeUp says:

Tavares. Even if Hedman is better in the long term, will he be an Islander when it happens? If so, at what cost to the payroll? Tavares should contribute immediately based on the following analysis:
    Rookie Year performance:
    Games/ATOI/Goals/Assts/Pts
    Crosby 81 20:08 39 63 102
    Ovechkin 81 21:37 51 54 106
    Malkin 78 19:10 33 52 85
    Stamkos* 79 19:36 31 31 62
    AVG 79 20:07 39 50 89

Looks like 30+ goals isn’t an unreal expectation, if he is to be considered in a league with rookie seasons of top goal scorers.

*I adjusted Stamkos numbers x1.33 to be more comparable with the others ATOI.

  159. avatar Priest says:

Tavares. Nothing against Hedman, but the way Tavares played in the World Juniors sold me on him. Before that I wasn’t so sold on him. Add in the fact that he will sell tickets, and it is a no-brainer for me.

  160. avatar lovin lethbridge says:

    John Tavares.
There is a reason Brian Burke wants him, as well as 29 other NHL teams.

  161. avatar Brad Ketch says:

Tavares. He gives hockey on Long Island a shot of energy that no one has given us in years. He’s flashy, a pure goal scorer, and someone that people will keep their eyes on every time he steps on the ice to take a shift. The Isles desperately need that. Hedman is good and may be exciting to watch…but hands down, Tavares attracts a much larger crowd.

  162. avatar Seth says:

    we need john tavares….

i dont understand how people are justifying taking hedman its absurd! the isles are becoming irrelevant on long island and drafting a defenseman will not stimulate interest for the common person. they want goals! we havent had one for years! he’ll put people back in the seats and save this franchise.

if you want them to draft hedman and build this team from the goal out, you better prepare to move to kansas city if you want to actually see this team succeed.

  163. avatar Matt S says:

John Tavares. We cannot trade this pick. It’s time to follow through on a rebuild for once.

  164. avatar Scott, East Meadow Long Island says:

I say the islanders will take tavares… for the following reasons.. we need an impact player right away..he is the man..

  167. avatar Doug says:

    John Tavares.

    GO ISLES!!!!

  168. avatar Scott says:

    John Tavares

  169. avatar Wendel Clark Gillies says:

Ok, enough of this Gilroy nonsense. Matt Gilroy cannot tie Victor Hedman’s skates. Matt Gilroy WILL NOT be a top 4 dman in this league. Everyone on here are getting their panties wet on this player because he is from Long Island and is talked about so heavily that even people that haven’t seen him play, jump on the bandwagon. Forget him. With that being said, John Taveras all the way!

  170. avatar John says:

    John Tavares….

watching him play for the Knights you get to appreciate the quick hands with a very accurate shot… goes into the dirty areas to score… not the fastest skater but has quick feet… he’s what the team needs and is someone to build around. And, if anyone noticed on the draft show… he said he wants to win the Stanley Cup… where as Hedman said to make the playoffs. Tavares has a goal, to play in the NHL and win the CUP. Isn’t that we want him to do as an Islander. I do.

  171. avatar Eric says:

Tavares is to Bossy, as, Hedman is to Potvin, what did you look forward to in those days, Bossy wrinkling the twine or Denny blocking a shot. Nuff said. Tavares is the answer to Islander fans prayers. If there is a GOD, he wouldnt let Garth screw this up.

  172. avatar Joe says:

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS: TAVARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  173. avatar Jon Mac says:

John Tavares. While I tend to support the philosophy of building from the goal out, I really believe that this team must get a player who can score goals and generate excitement right away. Tavares has that potential and the potential to save the Islanders.

  174. avatar JP39 says:

    John Tavares.

I don’t even think there should be a discussion with this one. No disrespect to Victor Hedman at all, as I know that based on everything that I’ve read, he’ll likely have a very successful NHL career. However, for THIS franchise, it should be a no-brainer. The Islanders need a centerpiece. The Islanders need a gifted goal scorer. The Islanders need someone to market. The Islanders NEED an identity. The Islanders need John Tavares.

  175. avatar acisles says:

It has to be Tavares. Both are Blue Chippers but the Islanders desperately need a guy that can put the puck in the net. He’ll also make the Isles more attractive to UFA’s. Lets put the Islanders back on the map and select TAVARES!!!!!

  176. avatar blitz says:

What can John do for you?

    A) increase the visibility of the franchise.

    B) increase interest in NYI during their training camp in Saschetwan (sp?)

    C) generate interest in the KC exhibition game

    D) possibly assist in NYI’s ability to represent one team in the Winter Classic. I highly doubt PIT was the selection without Crosby. Sorry.

    E) add future firepower to an anemic offense.

    F) possibly make NYI more marketable to other players: tons jumped on the PIT bandwagon, then same with TB, sort of…

    G) finally, the possibility of having a true franchise player since LaFontaine.

  177. avatar cinematic says:

Barry Melrose is saying we should get the next Chris Pronger so his former employers of the Lightning don’t get what they want. Too bad though…while Hedman def seems to be solid, I think Tavares has superstar written all over him. Not to mention…this is so badly what the Isles need. I just want to know who he’d center, and if we can somehow sign Gilroy or Komisarek. Then I’d be elated.

  178. avatar Tomas Jonsson says:

Tavares. 3 words. Asses in seats.

  179. avatar islesneedtavares2009 says:

John Tavares for many reasons. Much needed scorer, will sell tickets, will also attract quality free agents, which will help speed the lighthouse project up.

  180. avatar Barbara says:

  181. avatar Chris R says:

John Tavares. He’ll be a franchise player just like his uncle in the NLL.

  182. avatar On Edge says:

    BPA Tavares.

BP in 5 years could very well be Hedman.

Take BPA now in Tavares given the state of this franchise and the need for IMMEDIATE help on the ice…in the stands…in the NHL…in TOH…an absolute no brainer.

Also smart to play out the cards you were dealt and see what kind of crazy other options present themselves to us in the next few months.

  183. avatar islesneedtavares2009 says:

  184. avatar Chris TMC says:

    I flip a coin. Seriously.

But, but, its not a cop out! And Im not saying the Isles should do that, jeez no LOL! I just think that with the seriously small tidbits of information that I have on these two kids, I really have no business deciding which one is better. I mean, what would it be based on, really? Nothing much. Ive never watched either of them play a few games in a row, I dont know what kind of kids they are, the only time I even heard either of their voices was last night!

I know that there are a lot of people who feel that they know which one is better and good for them but I simply dont. All I do know is that, from what I do know, Id be thrilled for either of them to put on the orange and blue.

  185. avatar TXNYI says:

    John Tavares

Both are great players and have their strengths. You can’t go wrong with either. But having the flash of a pure goal scorer like Tavares would generate more fan interest plus a buzz around the team (and in the media) that Hedman may not provide. That could prove invaluable in the fight to keep this team on Long Island. Plus, we already have an All-Star defenseman (Streit). Let’s see if we can’t land a potential future All-Star forward.

  186. avatar Goalfarb11 says:

Tavares all the way. We need a franchise player to hang our hat on and help bring overall respectability back.
Also, if this kid takes the reigns and runs with it, he could help us get the lighthouse deal done.

  187. avatar steve says:

hedman.. look at what $6 million buys you in terms of a foward vs a defender.
defense is more expensive in salary, and defenders get much more ice time. “it all starts from the back line in the NHL”, “defense wins football championships”, “pitching and defense win baseball games”, “defense and rebounding win in the NBA”. defense fellas.
look across the river, the devils have a great goalie, and a superior defense, and every year, they play in May.
look at defense in the playoffs the next few weeks. what works, isn’t always sexy.

  188. avatar nickyco says:

  193. avatar Ed from Philly says:

    John Tavares

This organization needs some excitement. I have absolutely no problems with Hedman, but the Isles need to get the sexy pick here. I won’t regret the pick even if he busts. I just want to see them make the conventional choice for a change.

  198. avatar The Mick says:

    Tavares.

My head says Hedman because of the fact that a defensemen will have a greater impact on a game from a minutes perspective, but we need scoring and an overall presence in this league and Tavares will afford that to the Isles. Pick Tavares.

  199. avatar IslesAl says:

    TAVARES

    TAVARES

Scoring is the toughest skill to teach. The phrase is natural born scorer, not natural born Dman. Also, Dmen tend to bloom by 24-25 years of age, by then the drafted dmen are UFAs. Could not be any simpler Garth!

  200. avatar Mikey says:

This vote means very little because (unless you are an NHL scout) we have not seen enough of these players. Ticket sales, jersey sales, media buzz, and fan preference should never factor into a draft pick decision. You pick the best player available. The fact that some readers diminish Hedman’s stats from last year demonstrates the level of ignorance out there among Isles fans. (Hedman put up similar point totals than Kopitar in the SEL the year AFTER he was drafted and Lidstrom two years after he was drafted.) I can’t reasonably make the call, so I’ll leave it up to Jankowski’s team.

  201. avatar stopthepain says:

    Tavares

I was a Hedman guy, but CB’s post with the Torrey interview convinced me that Tavares can help the team now and into the future, while with Hedman the greatness will come in time (and he will be great). The Isles can obtain a top flight D man in UFA, or several B+ D men if the top flight can not be signed by the Islanders. See Streit, Mark.

  202. avatar BR says:

    Tavares.

The Isles desperately need a finisher who can step right into the NHL and JT fits the profile.

  203. avatar hale says:

some will say we need potvin we need potvin; we need trottier as well…take Tavares!

  204. KO made a statement recently that he is trying to change the team towards a winning attitude. Tavaras has been a winner whereever he has played hockey. With leaders like these two how can the Islanders do anything except be consistent contenders for the Stanley Cup.

  205. avatar Mark says:

Hi Chris, great article, Tavares, all the way. Although, if they could land the second choice, by trading their additional great selections to Tampa. They could land both stud’s. #1 John Tavares, #2 Victor Hedman. Would be great! But if you could only get one, I would choose, John Tavares Thanks Chris, Mark/NJ Go NY Islander’s, and Go the Lighthouse Project.

  206. avatar TIM says:

Tavares,he’s simply a better player for marketing reasons(ie jerseys, lighthouse)i won’t be upset if we take Hedman but for a team in serch of an idenity and a new building it’s a no brainer.

  207. avatar dedshark says:

CB i think you should be the gm

  208. avatar Doug says:

Hedman. Islanders fans fill the building anyway, they don’t need to draft a guy just to sell tickets/jerseys. Getting a D like Hedman and the amount of time that he spends on the ice will be more of a benefit in the long run for the organization.

  209. avatar Glenn says:

Tavares is the pick. This team needs a front-line playmaker in the worst way,
almost as badly as it needs a gate attraction. Tavares takes care of BOTH needs. If Garth can package SJ’s 1st rounder with the Guerin pick from PIT and a player, maybe we move up in round 1 to take a d-man prospect. But between Tavares and Hedman, Tavares is THE pick.

  210. avatar upstatenyifan says:

I’m not sure which scientific method works best here; Eeny meeny miny mo or rock scissors paper. I guess I will go with my gut…Tavares.

  211. avatar Dorfer says:

Tavares if the scouts feel he can be a dominant player in all aspects of the game, i.e. Malkin. Hedman if Tavares’ upside really is just Jason Spezza.

  212. avatar Isles fan Ken says:

Tavares! All signs point to Tavares being better than Ziggy or Turgeon, and those are two of most exciting Islanders I’ve seen. Of course he has to reach his potential, but I’ll take the risk and JT!

  213. avatar Robert says:

    Tavares

  214. avatar Vinny says:

    JOHN TAVARES!!!!

  215. avatar Pat says:

Tavares..but this is really a win win situation, but I think we have to take the opportunity we have right now to finally get ourselves a sniper.

  216. avatar Rishel31 says:

And with the first pick the NY Islanders select John Tavares!

  217. avatar Nicholas says:

Both amazing players but we need Tavares more.

  218. avatar Frank says:

It’s likely the isles are going to have a high pick again next year. My question is what does the talent look like for the 2010 draft? If there are a few great forwards available next year, it might make sense to take Hedman since dmen take longer to develop.

  219. avatar Martin Harvey says:

    Mister T !
JT will sell a lot of Jersey and Tix !
I’m dying to see KO and Tavares on the same line !
We need our offensive allstar !
I do not want to have sacrificed an entire season to pick a defenseman…
Please Garth, don’t disappoints us as you did in the 2008 Entry Draft…

  220. avatar Adam says:

Hedman, everyone knows without Potvin the miracle 75 run, let alone the Dynasty, would never have occured. The Isles need a stud franchise D-man more than Detroit needs compentant goaltending.

  221. avatar Will C says:

We cant say we know what JT will do. But we do know the Isles lost 31 games by ONE GOAL. That is a huge amount of losses by a minimal margin. Tavares is a game changer. Period. JT all the way. Take landon ferraro mid first and use 31st to take Roys kid.

  222. avatar Gloobenberg says:

Do we doubt that Garth Snow himself or at least a few others in the Draft group don’t read this site? Would they really go against what 99% of the fans really want? It’s not like we are dumb and don’t know our stuff. the fans have made their decision..it’s a clean cut answer.

    We want John Tavares.

Please Garth, i beg you. Don’t take this away from us. Make the right decision for this Franchise. You won’t regret it.

However, if you mess this up. The amount of people you hurt not to mention the damage you do to the team, will be horrible.

We’re putting out faith in you Garth.

  223. avatar Will77 says:

    Tavares

We need him in every facet of the Islanders organization. On the ice, the offense would benefit immediately. On the business side, he’s marketable, will sell tickets, and could help the Lighthouse. Hedman could be great, but with a healthy DP our defense is decent enough to get by, especially if you add Komisark or overpay for Jay-Bo. Tavares a 101 times out of 100

  224. avatar Mike says:

    Tavares!!

  225. avatar Dan says:

    John Tavares

This team needs more fire power then Defense. When our blueline is healthy it is good, although they still have breakdowns. Furthermore, we have good prospects on the blueline, Katic, Ness, Hamorlic, who will be good albet, not as good as Hedman. Can anyone name one offensive prospect who has the same hype that Tavares has? I know that we are baren everywhere, but we already have Mark for four more years.

Lastly, D-men take longer to develop and I believe that we will be in a very similar situation that Florida is having with JBO. At 25 VH could walk and he would only be reaching his potential.

  226. avatar coral springs isle fan says:

Tavares. He is a guy who already has a track record of winning. He has won WJC twice; he is a guy who rises to the occasion, big game player. Put a competitor like he and DP on the same team and you have guys who want to win! Believe me; this young developing team needs a guy like JT to come in and get this team used to winning. If Mark Streit did not turn into the player he is then I think I would lean more towards Hedman. Will Tavares end up having to play the wing position his first year? Do you put him with Dougy Weight and KO?

  227. avatar Mike from Bohemia says:

Tavares….by a nose. Nobody can be sure who will turn out to be the better pick. With everything else equal, Tavares will help the organization more, regarding:
    a) more tickets sold, in the short term at least
    b) attraction of free agents
    c) initial excitement – perhaps helping the Lighthouse cause
    d) attention & respect of the US/Canadian hockey world – something I see complained about alot in these blogs
    e) marketing value
Let me repeat, the above items being the tie-breaker if both guys are rated equal. Besides, right now Taveres is rated higher anyway.

  228. avatar Billy O says:

    Hedman,
He has the potential to be the next great defensemen of our time (aka Potvin).

Can you say that Tavares will be the next Gretzky or Crosby?

  229. avatar Matt says:

    Tavares. Tavares. Tavares.

  230. avatar MikeyMitts says:

Tavares. Not Since a healthy Turgeon have we had a sniper. We will finnaly have someone who stops in the crease instead of skating past it. Where he scores his goals is the exact spot we have trouble getting guys to shoot from.

Tavares is not a ‘generational’ player (Gretsky, Crosby). Hedman, by virtue of his position, his size, and his present skill set relative to his age, has the potential to be a ‘generational’ player for his position (Potvin, Lidstrom, Salming). It’s admittedly tough to refrain from drafting a sniper when the Isles are in such need of scoring… but I think it’s what ultimately would prove to be the wisest move in the long-term.

  234. avatar themass says:

JT– Hedman is the smarter option longterm…but we can’t afford to wait

  235. avatar Ken says:

Defence wins champonships plain and simple. Another Taveres will bein next years draft another Hedma wont.

  236. avatar Pritchett says:

just as 242 said……. Tavares and trade into the top 15 for a defenseman.

  237. avatar Jim M says:

    John T

  238. John Tavares.

It’s simply a matter of needs-based logic. The Islanders have been at or near the bottom in Goals For, for nearly 5 years. It’s time to have that Franchise Center that makes the players around him better. Think of it this way, if you’re in the offensive zone a good chunk of the time you don’t need a 6’6″ d-man clearing the front of the net.

  239. avatar Paul in Canada says:

Have been watching the Islanders “10 best games” DVD. 1982 final game vs Vancouver they discuss how Denis Potvin is one thing, but its remarkable how well the rest of the defense has come along. Guys like Dave Langevin, Stephan Persson and Mike McKewan playing so well by keeping it simple and sticking to Arbour’s system. Mostly not conventional “stars” on Arbour’s defense. Point being, I think we can, in time, build a quality defense with or without a superstar but you need to draft high scoring forwards like Tavares and we are finally in position to do so. Tavares please!

  240. avatar Hock says:

I like that he said he wants to win a Stanley Cup…..Tavares….Drive for Five.

  241. avatar drouin says:

I would go with Hedman but then again I’ve never actually seen either of them play. I just believe the old adage that defence wins championships.
Having said that, I am comletely comfortable with Garth and team making the call on this one. That is a feeling I never had when Milbury was in charge.

  242. avatar Scott says:

    Tavares.

  243. avatar FourCupsin4YearsNot60 says:

JT – People forget about Mark Streit. I’m not saying that Hedman cant or wont be better then Streit, but we already have a 1st line, All-Star, D-man who can play 25 minutes a game and make people around him better. We also have Witt, Martinek and Sutton who are solid 2/3/4 d-men.

We have no equivalent 1st line forwards to JT. In fact, even with JT we still have realistically only 1 legit 1st line forward (maybe Okposo, maybe).

By the way, don’t get your hopes up too high. I think JT will be really good, but some people here are talking about him like Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin. He will probably not be one of those guys (we can hope, but he probably wont be). He will probably have a 1st year similar to Stamkos in the 23-27-50 range and be similar in production to Rick Nash or Jason Spezza, maybe even Dany Heatley before this year, during his career. Those are not bad players at all, but if your expecting an all-time player, you could be disappointed by a guy who really can help turn this franchise around.

  244. avatar Paul says:

    John Tavares

  245. avatar Isles4cups says:

With the first overall selection in the 2009 NHL entry draft the Islanders are pleased to select from the OHL’s London Knights…John Tavares.

  246. avatar Matt Brosseau says:

    JOHN TA-VA-RES! (clap-clap-clapclapclap)

  247. avatar Nyles says:

    a goalie

  248. avatar Formz says:

    Tavares

We need a guy that can put up ridiculous stats which will market the team

  249. avatar DavidNYC says:

Tavares. Tough call but I am going to agree with possible future team captain Mark Streit. He is confident in the depth that we have on the blueline when healthy and feels we could benefit most from a sniper. I think the young guys have progressed nicely but you can never have too many goal scorers. I think it was Torrey who mentioned d-men take longer to develop and by the time they have all the answers, they are free agents. Let’s put ourselves in the position to improve greatly in the short term and lure a mature dman just ready to hit their prime like we did in some ways with Streit to take us to the next level.

  250. avatar RPL says:

    JOHN TA-VA-RES!!!

Altough I do believe Hedman is the safer pick you gotta take the chance on Tavares. This kid can score, and score a lot with a wide array of moves. A blue liner is not gonna put fans in the stands, Hedman does not have the potential to find himself on the SC top 10 everynight. We need to market this team to the rest of the league and the players out there so they could see NYI as a viable place to play. And by having a young superstar who could become a human highlight reel it is a lot easier to do that.

  251. avatar McLovin21 says:

    Hedman
    Offense wins games
    Defense wins championships

  252. avatar Alex O says:

Tavares, If its between the Franchise defenceman and franchise forward, IMHOP you pick the forward, As much as Potvin was a huge piece of our championship years The trio Grande and specifically Trots and Bossy who led us the most.Plus we as fans need something to get excited about and nothing excites more than goals. Tavares automatically challenged Parise for most exciting and best young player in the tri state area and selfishly a better player than the Rags have

  253. avatar Matt says:

just think about what selecting john tavares would do to okposo’s game. okposo showed some great skill in his rookie year. imagine putting JT on a line with him while adding a LW through free agency. that would probably be the best first line this franchise has had in some time.

  254. avatar whatever says:

Tavares. If this was a few years from now and the Isles were a step away from a playoff caliber-championship team I’d say take Hedman. The fact is we need a good reason for fans to come out and see a great team build. Tavares is the man.

  255. avatar David Volek says:

To the “Tavares” people – you’re all acting like a bunch of Rangers fans. Tavares is overhyped because he’s Canadian. Canadian media all over the Canadian prospect. Hedman’s your man – better character, better skater, smarter, bigger size less injury prone. Tavares won’t be able to plow over guys in the pros like he does in juniors. Let him end up in mediocre Toronto until he’s 30 whereafter the Rangers can overpay him to close out his career. We need defense to make up for our broken goalie.

  256. avatar bcarey says:

    Tavares.

The team has lacked an all-out offensive threat since Ziggy left. Then there’s the marketing, merchandising, ticket sales. The list goes on. Hedman is not a sexy pick. Tavares is. This team has not had that since I was in grade school.

  257. avatar Brian G says:

Pick Tavares – they need some sort of scoring threat

  258. avatar Zach says:

    Tavares.

  259. avatar kabbage says:

Put Tavares on the wing with Bailey in the middle and Okposo on the other wing!

  260. avatar Phil says:

    Tavares for numerous reasons :

    - Will give the islanders a lot more credibility around the league.

    - The average hockey fan gets more excited watching a goal scorer. (i find myself watching capitals games just to see what ovechkin will do)

    - Have a lot of cap room to make offers to UFA defensemen in the coming years.

    - Marketing standpoint. More people will come to the arena to see Tavares than Hedman.

    - Believe it or not a lot of games are decided via the shootout. Defense not gonna help there. Tavares has amazing hands.

PLEASE GARTH, DON’T BE STUPID AND TRADE THIS PICK. A DRAFT LIKE THIS IS THE REASON YOU WANT TO HAVE THE #1 OVERALL PICK. WE STOCKED UP LAST YEAR, LET’S GO FOR A PRETTY SURE BET THIS YEAR.

  261. avatar Steve says:

    Tavares!

1)For the chance at building a championship team around a character scoring dynamo who loves pressure and thrives under it.
2)For putting people in the seats (and getting Charles some of his $$$ back)
    3) For the lighthouse project
    4) For the future viability of this franchise on Long Island
    5) For the long suffering fans of the Isles.

He is the consensus choice of the fans and pro scouts. Garth and Ryan can do no wrong in this selection no matter what he turns out to be. It is not time to try to outsmart the Central Scouting Bureau.

  262. avatar MarinerIslanderSean says:

When Garth steps up to the podium, he says “with the first overall pick, we select JOHN TAVARES of the London Knights, OHL.”

  263. avatar Le Dude says:

I’ll be the conservative in the bunch and back Hedman. I’m more impressed with him overall. I get the vibe from Tavares that he’s not going to be happy with the Islanders, and will end up a classic underachiever that show fits of brilliance, but no consistency.

Though if both were to live up to the hype around them, I’d rather have Tavares.

  264. avatar DP says:

Tavares because we need someone who can consistently score. That said I think Garth takes Hedman because of character, work ethic, team spirit instead …I see a potential for a Campoli type attitude problem with Tavares—ok i’ve convinced myself
    take Hedman

  265. avatar Brian says:

Tavares needs to be the pick.

  266. avatar Otter says:

Hedman. I changed my mind after watching the interview last night.

If I were about to be the #1 pick, become a millionaire playing the sport I love, after working my a$$ off my entire life, I’m pretty sure I would have showed maybe a touch of enthusiasm.

Tavares doesn’t seem too thrilled about the prospect of coming to LI. When asked about becoming a NYI, he looked like someone off camera had pooped their pants and couldn’t get out of there quick enough.

  267. avatar jfnisles says:

Tavares!!!Hedman reminds me of Tree in the movie ” Mystery, Alaska

  268. avatar Nyles says:

to Mclovin 21, offense = excite your fanbase = money for franchise = UFA defensman = good defensemen = win games and championships

  269. avatar Brother Rat says:

    Tavares

  270. avatar TuxTax says:

Tavares – Goal scorer simple as that! yay for #1

  271. avatar karl says:

    tavares

  272. avatar Frank Dillon says:

How is this even a question? Tavares – not to be confused with the 70′s disco act

  273. avatar Bedell says:

I would be really happy with eathier but I just think John Tavares is the better decision.

  274. avatar Jimmy Sparx says:

How many 1 goal loses this season???? 23,24,25 something like that.

Hedman will be a top 5 d-man in the NHL, no question at all. This guy will crush people against the boards and they will bounce off I him in the corners. He is not afraid to jump in on the play and go low. This guy is going to be something special, but the Islanders need a finisher now!!!! Not 2 or 3 years, but now!!!!

My vote is for #91 John Tavares

  275. avatar TimQ says:

Hedman – If this is supposed to be a rebuilding process meant to sustain a strong team over the long haul you go with the superior dman to build strength from the back outwards

  276. avatar matt says:

garthshould get JT for his own good if he does he will get so much fans if he dont he will lose alot offans

  277. avatar Spud 31 says:

Tavares! I wanna have enough goals scored to re-ignite the goal song debate!

  278. avatar IslesFanInBkNY says:

Definitly Tavares! We need offence! This way we can utilize God of Soccer Pele formula.
“Our opponents will score as they can but Brazil will score as much as they want.” End of story.

  279. avatar Bob Bassen says:

    JONATHAN TAVAVRES.
Pretty easy decision in a way. Although I can understand being slightly wary of a young person who has been HYPED for a long time and how that effects his development and attitude down the road if/when things get a little*rough*. But at this point considering the Islanders *needs* you gotta go for it.

  280. avatar John says:

Tavares; The question is what do the Isles need, a Defenseman or a Forward. The answer is Yes. They need both and more. Pure goal scorer are hard to get. Defenseman take longer to develope. It would be easier for the Isles to get defense help via free agency than a goal scorer. Take Tavares, then over spend for Komisarek and/or Gilroy.

  281. avatar Ed J says:

    John Tavares without a doubt.

  282. avatar Jason says:

    Tavares

Now if I could only go to sleep for the next 9 weeks until draft day.

  283. avatar jim from St James says:

Taveres, cause defense can be taught, goal scoring, for the most part costs more…I think it makes more sense to spend the dough on UFA D, they say he overspent for Streit, he’s worth every penny. Besides the MVMC needs some spark.
AND i think JT would be a better fit for “overspeed” than Hedmnan will be.

  284. avatar Michael says:

Tavares no doubt in my mind. You absolutely cannot pass up on this guy. Sure a defensemen would be great, but our offense is in much worse shape right now.

  285. avatar Jerry says:

Tavares. The Isles need a closer who can score. Take a shot at Gilroy for D, and bring in Ridderwall for Goalie. Isles have a good shot at D-Man in the second round, or free agency.

  286. avatar Michael R. says:

Has to be Tavares. He won’t be a Crosby or Ovechkin. Won’t be a Bossy or Trottier, but every team needs the one guy who can take his team on his shoulders when they need it, and I just don’t think you get that from a d-man. Tavares has shown he can do that. Also, there are d-men coming up as FAs who Garth can try to target, both with money, and the idea of building a better team with Tavares as the biggest block.

  287. avatar Jared says:

Tavares- We need a superstar like Crosby who can score. Combine the other 1st with a 2nd and try and move up and grab a D-Man later in round 1

  288. avatar toorude says:

I am not 100% sure but I say JT with the pick – but need supplemental plan to address other needs as well.

  289. avatar mjisles says:

    tavares

  290. avatar teddyfusi says:

    tavares

  291. avatar Mike from Queens says:

Tavares. Defense is all well and good, but if you can’t score goals, you won’t win games. You can pick up defense via Free Agency because it’s normally under-priced. You can’t really do the same with offense.

  292. avatar shappy says:

JOHN-TA-VAR-ES clap clap clap clap clap

  293. avatar ubettano says:

    John Tavares

  294. avatar Heineken says:

    Tavares!
Isn’t it so scary that the decision is in the hands of a lifetime Backup Goaltender???
Last draft was fine dropping spots to load the system, this year we need our sniper! Go get Tavs and keep your job snow!

  295. avatar Michael says:

JOHN TAVARES.. and the fact that Garth Snow is keeping this such a mystery just goes to show how he literally has no idea what he’s doing. Prepare for the trade, you’ve all been warned.

  296. avatar MT says:

I was on the Hedman train at first, but I am now on the Tavares train. Goal scoring. Plain and simple. I’m tired of the other teams getting the goals, I’m ready to get out of my seat more than twice in a game. We need this.

  297. avatar BrendonNJ says:

I vote contrarian with Hedman. Would love to have Tavares and clearly we need more scoring up front. Will go buy a #91 jersey when/if we pick him. But I want them to pick the best player for the long-term. If their scouts believe it is Hedman (granted a big “if”), I support them if only because great blue liners are harder to find. I support either choice so long as it is for the right reason as supported by their scouting evaluation and not for short-term tix sales (that is what good here in the first place).

  298. avatar AM says:

Tavares – D-man take more time to develop and with players hitting free agency now at 25-26 you are better off filling defense needs going that route. Plus, Tavares provides so many intangibles for the fan base and organization. Especially after the year (and Mad Mike era) we had to endure.

  299. Tavares…what can I say that hasn’t been covered in the previous 300+ comments?

  300. avatar streit02 says:

This franchise needs a superstar. It needs a sniper (a la mark streit). It needs a franchise center. You do not win cups without a franchise center unless you are the devils. This franchise needs fan fare, it needs excitement. We saw in 2000-2001 how quickly fans came flocking to the coliseum. Tavares is a flashy franchise player who will put people in the seats and bring them out of their seats by watching his play. Simply put Victor Hedmancan not bring all of these things to the Islanders. Tavares can.

  301. avatar Heineken says:

Im ready to call the isles season tix and tell them im intrested in 2season tix in the 200′s, but call me back after we draft Tavares.
Hopefully having many offers like that on the table will spark a fire on the isles to take Tav’s #1.

  302. avatar Ray since 1974 says:

Tavares. Hands down, off the ice even more than on. He makes the team relevant again. More national TV, more press, more fans, more marketing. He makes the team more palatable for free agents. Let’s be real.

  303. avatar Don't Mind The Haters says:

    TAVARES

Although, I initially wanted Hedman but I’d be fine with both.

Torrey made a good comment in your interview that flipped my choice. By the time Hedman lives up to his potential he could be a UFA.

I’ll take the immediate rewards, and hope the Islanders develop him to be the best player between the two.

  304. avatar Scott S. from Long Beach says:

Hedman. 28 minutes a night and build the team around him.

  305. avatar Dave says:

Tavares. Hard to go wrong with either but Snow will always be known as the guy who passed on Hedmen (or Tavares as the case may be).

  306. avatar NYI FAN says:

    Tavares
We need scoring & you can’t teach that, you CAN teach defense with the right players & coaches.
    Lets go Islanders!!

  307. avatar John Taveras (really Doug F.) says:

Taveras…as Ken Morrow said last night “there’s only one Denis Potvin”

  308. avatar Isles fan says:

Tavares = Excitement – Which there hasn’t been on Long Island since 1993 playoffs.

As many others have said you can do no wrong in picking Tavares.

It’s not like we have any 20 goal scorers on the team.

Pick up a free agent D man and we will be going in the right direction.(overpay if we have to)

  309. avatar JB says:

    Tavares… Tavares SO much…

  310. avatar MileHighIsle says:

Not a bad dillema for a struggling franchise. So many reasons to pick Tavares but my gut says Hedman. Our d is weak, old & fragile and the goaltending is average. Having a couple of solid two-way, SMART dmen in Streit and Hedman will benefit the team more. We’ll find offense from somewhere (FA, BPort or Draft). I just think we’ll win more games if we cut down our goals against.

  311. avatar dk7937 says:

Tavares..Offense is the best Defense, think about that one!!! we need excitment! he will do what sid the kid did for pitt… get us a new arena!!!!

  312. avatar KLann says:

    Tavares

  313. avatar Froggy says:

Tavares – Who is a better hockey player? Most people say Tavares. But that is not what is most important here. Although winning should be the most important issue, the most pressing issue for us is SURVIVAL. Tavares might not get the LP approved on his own, but he will most definitely give the team more exposure both with the local fanbase and nationally. That cannot be overlooked.

  314. avatar Abie Nystrom Fagrina says:

I would draft Taveras, wait 6 years and then sign Hedman as a free agent. By then, I’ll be able to sell my house in North Carolina and move to Kansas City to watch my favorite team play.

  315. avatar Mike says:

JT please we have a desant dfence with Streit, witt, bruno, and martenek. We need a big time goal scorer and you can always pick a defenceman with the 30th pick

  316. avatar JoeRiverside says:

    TAVARES
Isles need a goal scorer and they’re not often on the UFA market. He would also fit in nicely with Okposo, Bailey, et al.
Hedman is great, but believe Isle have a better chance of signing a strong UFA defensemen, than they would a sharp shooter.

  317. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

    John Tavares
    - We have not had a sniper since Palffy
    - We need to put pucks in the net
    - We need to put butts in the seats
    - We need a new face besides Kyle to market
    - It could help the Lighthouse Project by drawing more league attention to the matter.
    - Forwards take less time to develop, and as I have said previously, the one thing the Islander franchise does not have is time.
    - We could package one of our other 9 picks this year to move down to the mid-teens and pick up a stud D-man, or even one via free agency.

  318. avatar JonnyBoston says:

    Tavares!

  319. avatar isles3113 says:

    John Tavares hands down!!!!

We need scoring and as offensive minded as Hedman is, he aint scoring 20 goals next year… Also who knows if we even go into last place again next year and have the chance to take Hall… Our defense isn’t the problem with DP in net… We need scoring now!!

  320. avatar Dan says:

Due to the lack of scoring I say Tavares. I do like Hedman though. I hope they both have great careers!

  321. avatar Anthony says:

    TAVARES No if’s and’s or but’s about it…

  322. avatar Pete DeBenedetto says:

    Tavares

  323. avatar JoeRiverside says:

One more thing. My guess is that Rangers are hoping Isle pick up Hedman. Tavares would put the Isle back in the sport pages. I doubt Hedmen would do so. I was driving yesterday during the draft and IT TOOK ME 1 HOUR to find a radio station in NY Metro area that told me that Isle won the draft. Crazy.

  324. avatar mapisles2025 says:

Dennis Potvin calls himself an Islander.
Mike Bossy calls himself and Islander.
Kyle Okposo calls himself and Islander.
It’s time for JOHN TAVARES to finally call himself an Islander.

  325. avatar hotstick says:

I say Tavares w/ out a doubt! I’M sure Hedman will be a very good Dman in the future, but its easier to get a dman than a sniper in the free agent market cause dmen take usually longer to mature and by that account usually brings them closer to free agency than a stud forward.

  326. avatar Paul says:

Tavares. Tavares. Tavares. For the thousandth time, Tavares.

  327. avatar Tim says:

John Tavares, JUST ANNOUNCE IT ALREADY!

  328. avatar izzo says:

The problem is that the Isles need BOTH Tavares and Hedman. They have holes on their roster that both can fill. I would have almost liked it if we dropped to 2 and this decision was made for us (before you flame, I say ALMOST).

Tavares is a surer bet, but I’m of the camp that an impact defenseman is more important than an impact scorer.

I take Tavares, but it’s close.

  329. avatar kingbet123 says:

    Tavares!!!!

I think Hedman will be a stud (aka Chris Pronger) but I think the Isles NEED Tavares.

  330. avatar Patrick says:

    tavares of course

  331. avatar Nick S. says:

    John Tavares!

Simple, JT finally give us someone who the rest of the NHL is excited about. Perhaps with JT Canadian hockey fans will finally start picking on some other unfortunate teams

  332. avatar UNH Steve says:

    Tavares, thats an easy one

  333. avatar Heath says:

    Tavares

  334. avatar Kyle says:

    Hedman

After the Isles took Billy Harris in 1972 they had they offensive player to take the franchise d-man Dennis Potvin. After going for Offense every year since 2002 with the exception of 2006, its time for a d-man

  335. avatar billy says:

    TAVARES

Why? because we havent had a great offensive player who could at least crack 80 points since wonderful little ziggy palffy.

  336. avatar Zeike says:

It has to be Tavares. For the purposes of ticket sales, for the purposes of marketing sizzle, for the purposes of name recognition and legitimacy, for the purposes of attarcting free agents, and to let the league and the hockey world know that this team is serious, you have to take the top propsect since Crosby. And he’s a pretty good hocket player too.

  337. avatar PFR says:

    Tavares.
Because he’s the best player available.

  338. avatar Jimmy says:

    JT

we have another first round pick we can use for a dman and we can try and sign a guy like Komarisk from Montreal..

We have needed a goal scorer all year think of how many games we lost by two goals or less a true goal scorer espically in this system could have changed that

  339. avatar Tony says:

Tavares. I won’t be going to the draft party because I fear the fan reaction if Garth should draft anyone else.

  340. avatar Captain Crunch says:

    John Tavares.

    - Only negative press for the Isles since 2002 series against Leafs.

    - We need organic growth of our fanbase … drawing in more than hardcore Isles fans, we need hockey fans wanting to watch The Kid Who Broke Gretzky’s Records in Junior.

    - We need to be able to win games where we give up 3 or 4 goals.

    - We need to be on the map for UFAs looking to be part of something special.

  341. avatar bossy4president says:

just thinking how great JT will look in the new 3rd jersey. Can’t wait to pick one up.

  342. avatar Andrew T says:

    JT

When a team can’t muster a single 20-goal scorer and has a chance to draft a palyer with Tavares’s potential, I think you take that opportunity.

  343. avatar Islebethere4u says:

Nothing like making this as difficult as possible, eh CB? Here goes…
Before I take anyone I look to see where I might draft next year. If its good and I can UPgrade then… 1. I take Hedman ( I beleive in building out from the defense. 2. Take the other 1st round pick and combine that in a package to go after the next best offensive talent in 2010′s draft. Then I go after Gilroy.Break the bank for him, we have the cap space. Break the bank on one of this year’s FA snipers. Imagine two big mobile offensively talented d-men with Gaborik Bailey and Okposo? That reminds me of Potvin, Person, Bossy, Gillies and Trots all over again. The rest will fall into place. (Build your D, the O will come!)

  344. avatar The Hollow says:

    Tavares.

  345. avatar Isles08025 says:

    Tavares

  346. avatar AZS says:

    Jon Tavares

    1) Gives them the star player they need. The combo of JT and Okposo will be a nasty one for years

    2) Would put the Isles back on the scene …he’s the kind of player that draws attention on his own.

    3) I think it couldn’t hurt the Lighthouse project to have larger crowds and some more excitement at the Colli …

    4) He makes us a better team …

  347. avatar Smokey says:

    Hedman

  348. avatar MikeyMitts says:

This isnt 1980. Hedman is not potvin. This team has been foward starved for years. Good D corps desnt always win games. Especially with the go go style that has them back on there heals and injury prone from exhaustion. The longer the offence has the puck the easier the job is for the D. Not to mention the fact that when you have great offence it will help bring free agent D’s no matter what shape the buildings in.

  349. avatar Nova Scotia Isles Fan says:

#276 — Don’t make your judgement of John Tavares’ commitment based on the interviews of him on TSN last night. One of the main problems with kids coming out of Junior Hockey these days is that they have all been coached in how to talk to the media. JT talks like that all the time. In the middle of the Worlld Juniors, he talks like that.

He is a great kid with a great attitude and all the skill we could possibly want. We can’t go wrong with Hedman, but JT is the guy.

  350. avatar The real JD says:

    Tavares!!!

Streit and Hedman for 25minutes a game is reason to pause but the franchise needs the intangibles that Tavares brings more. JT is more exciting he’ll put people in the seats not only will he score but he will make the players around him better. This summer there just happen to be a few good D-men available via free agency.

  351. avatar CM says:

John Tavares. Strong and creative forwards are bigger threats than shut down D-men. Guys like Pronger and Niedermayers always have difficult times with players like Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosbys. In the end goalies stop pucks not D-men.

  352. avatar Jakeisles says:

The pick has to be Tavares

  353. avatar Pat says:

    John Tavares

    Do not trade the pick.

Reasons why I feel this way are well documented in many posts – go for the gusto here.

  354. avatar Isletry says:

    Tavares.

We have already invested in the backend of this team to the tune of a 15 year contract. We are offensively starved, and lack a gamebreaker. Tavares is a cornerstone, and if he doesn’t fit our system…well, it’s time to get a new system, because this guy can play!

Time to end the suffering Garth; go for the sure thing!

  355. avatar Original Rob says:

    Tavares.

My head says go with the dman, but my heart has been clamoring for a potential superstar for this team for too long.

  356. avatar Gary Cast says:

    TAVARES:

It’s time for another scoring machine. Mike Bossy has been gone way too long without a replacement if he can really be replaced.

Garth this year we waited and watched. Now it’s time to DO! Get on with it already and come clean with the fan and let us in on your mindset!!!

  357. avatar Ben Gunn says:

    TAVARES

  358. avatar JayK says:

Islestry #369 — you make a very good point, but it’s sort of Catch 22.

If we knew DP was coming back strong, we would certainly pick Tavares.

Of course, you can’t know now that he would be coming back strong, unless he had been healthy all along, which probably means we wouldn’t have the chance to draft Taveras.

So the big unknown here — though Garth probably knows — is just where DP stands on his rehab, given his crutches sighting.

  359. avatar Strickland says:

Tavares. No need to get cute.

  360. avatar Rex says:

    may as well join in

    John Tavares

The Isles just need something flashy at this point that should break the tie

  361. avatar Jon says:

    HOW ABOUT 1 WORD. TAVARES.

  362. avatar Jack says:

Tavares. The franchise needs the on-ice and off-ice boost he would give.

  363. Head says Hedman, heart says Tavares.

So Tavares it is. We need to make sure the team is still here by the time Hedman hits his peak, and JT is the draw that can help do that.

  364. avatar cusi says:

    Tavares!
Just a pick, since i have only seen the two of the play a total of 3 or 4 games in my life. I will leave it up to the proffesionals who do it for a living.

  365. avatar phil c says:

    hedman

tavares is fine of course, but apparently more spezza than crosby. . .not bad but not exactly electric. i’ll take the franchise dman in that comparison.

  366. avatar Pete says:

Tavares, no brainer we need offense!

  367. avatar Mrbelvidere says:

Taveres works for me. would not be upset with Hedman either.

  368. avatar NickeyNice says:

    Tavares all the way!!!!!!

  369. avatar Pd says:

    John Tavares.
We need Garth to pull the architect and take the “bossy” of the draft the scorer who will put the people in the seats. I don’t think the isles can go wrong with either but everyone wants to see a scorer and thats JT

  370. avatar Nick says:

    Tavares!!!

  371. avatar Southard says:

    Tavares no doubt about it.

  372. avatar isles72 says:

    Tavares for me
but I think Hedman would be the better choice in the long run

  373. avatar Jerky says:

John Tavares all the way. We need a point a game player who adds another element of excitement around the league. Combined with KO and Bailey, we should gain respectability around the league and with one more solid draft next year and a few good UFA signings, we’ll be back on the map. That said, I will not jump off the bridge if we pick VH – he’ll be phenomenal and a solid cornerstone to any franchise.

  374. avatar bill neftleberg says:

tavares for the simple reason that we need a player to revitalize our franchise. a spart to restore our viability and he has the charisma we need

  375. avatar BillyIsle says:

Tavares…. Even some of my ranger friends are excited about this kid coming to NY. Im happy with either, but clearly JT gives more publicity.

  376. avatar Ian says:

    John Tavares

  377. avatar kreatiiv says:

    tavares hands down.

he doesnt “score goals” – this is a kid that broke a gretzky record, has already four years of ohl hockey behind him, plus playoff experience, broke a long standing ohl scoring record to enter the draft, and i cant say this enough… 58 goals in 56 games is not just “scoring goals.”

besides… i agree with another poster that hedman is just looking for an entrance to the NHL and wont be here when this kid (and in experience compared to tavares he is) finally does develop NHL ready.

  378. avatar terry says:

Tavares. Sure the front loading washer dryer might be more practical, more efficient, and serve you better in the long run, but sometimes you just have to buy your wife the diamond earrings.

  379. avatar Tony D says:

Tavares … I would not lose my mind if Snow drafted Hedman, but the Islanders need a big-time goal scorer. The defense is OK and with a healthy DP the goals against goes down. Some of those one or two goal games may have ended differently with a real sniper on the ice.

  380. avatar Ryan says:

The clear choice is Tavares, but I worry that a recent scout said he is not the next Crosby, Mario, etc., and that he is more comparable to Jason Spezza. Spezza is nice (and should be an Islander), but I will be disappointed if Tavares is not a better player than Spezza down the road.

  381. avatar Willis says:

This is tough. A D who is huge AND skates well is serious. Still, we lack offense. Tavares by a hair.

  382. avatar BringtheReign says:

My buddy works for the Islanders doing sales and believe me, from what he hears around the entire organization they all want Tavares its going to happen.

  383. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Snow definitely has a tough decision. Either has the chance to be a bust so I wouldn’t fault Snow if whoever he picked doesn’t pan out. That being the case both have tremendous upside and instead of going for need I’d just pick the best player available and to me that would give Tavares the slight edge. (and if Snow could get a Malkin or a Kovalchuk in a package deal for the pick, I’d seriously consider that too.)

  384. avatar Chris H says:

Tavares – we need a prolific scorer

  385. avatar jay dugan says:

    tavares.
you have because he is 2 things.
    1. a goal scorer, which has been a total void for the team for many many years.
    2. the top prospect. Hedman is very good but the majority of people “who know” say Tavares is the best even if it is by just a little. Imagine you dont take him and Hedman is a bust!? You could move the franchise to Alaska if that happens.

  386. avatar Thomas V says:

Tavares – You do not pass on a talent like this. He brings instant credibility espeically with the refereeing since we NEVER seem to get a call. Also it would be nice to see someone with talent get 18 min a game instead of no talent Hilbert.

  387. avatar brady says:

it will be tavares with the 3rd pick…why cant someone bring this up>>> tampa needs to clear cap room (ex: malone)…toronto cannot take on salary…the islanders ABSOLUTELY NEED to take on salary to reach the cap floor…tampa will ask the islanders who they want in the draft the islanders will tell tampa hedman, cuz thats who tampa, is resigned to drafting…tampa will ask the islanders to trade pics for the right to choose hedman first, and will ask the islanders to take on some salary…since the islanders will do this favor for tampa, tampa then has to HOOK UP the islanders, and they will hook up the islanders with either a few more pics, and or a prospect they currently have…now that the isles will have the 2nd pic, they can do the same thing with atlanta, colorado, and LA…JUST LIKE THE NFL DOES, YOU JUST GET THE TEAM YOU ARE TRADING WITH TO SIGN INTO THE TRADE AGREEMENT THAT THEY HAVE TO PIC A CERTAIN PLAYER AND CANNOT DEVIATE FROM THAT PLAYER…y does no one else realize this tampa NEEEEEEEDS TO CLEAR CAP ROOM AND DRAFT DAY IS THE DAY TO DO IT

  388. avatar tond24 says:

    John Tavares…dont mess this up

  389. avatar Mike says:

If They don’t take Tavares I will boycott the team for 2 years.

  390. avatar The PolishPrince says:

I have to say I was leaning Hedman earlier in the season. However now that the ISles have the #1 I have to go with Tavares. Defense may win championships and winning will fill the old barn. I understand that. However goal scorers sell tickets and I think that for THIS team in THIS situation that is a very real need. JT and never look back…

  391. avatar MJS says:

Tavarez – The team has been so starved for offense it is not funny. Defense definitely wins games, but you have to be able to put a few pucks in the net. I would also want Snow to trade up with the second 1st rounder and pick the best available defenseman. You never know, that kid could surprise and play in the NHL next season. The Isles have also had good luck with FA defensemen. If they could put together a defense like Jonsson, Hamerlik, Aucoin, and Niinima again the team could contend.

  392. avatar Ken D. says:

    Tavares. Isles need offense.

  393. avatar JD says:

    Tavares

I really, really like Hedman, and he will be a major stud on defense; Kenny Jonsson on ‘roids (metaphor, folks, just a metaphor). However, he will take 2-4 years to reach NHL impact status, including playoff heroics. Tavares, on the other hand can add 20+ goals (or more…much more) within the first 82 games, sell tix, help get us the Lighthouse and basically save our franchise. Duh.

With our many other 1st and 2nd round picks and prospects, we can even swing deals and land another top-10 player, so there you go.

  394. avatar NickyL says:

John Tavares. No question about it. You can get a good D-man in the draft or in free agency. We need a scorer and someone we want to go to games to see. I’m sorry but telling me to buy tickets to go see Hedman is such a crock of an idea.

  395. avatar dose says:

the more i think about the idea that tavares would help seal the LH deal, the more it makes sense to me. not so much that tons more people will be for it, but the buzz there already is will get much louder. so much so that botta’s idea of doing it now and getting the kid out there seems like a really good move.

  396. avatar JoeRiverside says:

I would assume Isles Mgmt reads this site. If so, they can’t help but see that fans want Tavares by 20:1 margin.

  397. avatar Jesse D (aka jessedlovesnyi) says:

Tavares. He’s worth it for the marketing and ticket sales alone. The Isles haven’t had someone with the scoring ability of Tavares since before I was born.. we need somebody to excite the fans and get some butts in the seat. Somebody that if we are down 3-2 in the 3rd, will be able to deke out a few people and be counted on (maybe not until 2012) to score a goal.

  398. avatar Jarett says:

    Take Gretzky first….i mean tavares

  399. avatar Lankyleo says:

    Tavares
Drafting tavares will sell tickets, merchandise, not to mention put a goal scorer in an isles uniform (remember what that looks like?) The buzz created can only help the lighthouse issue. D-men like Hedman are dificult to come by, but I think in this case, considering where the Isles as a franchise are, you have to take Tavares

  400. Tavares, team has been lacking a marquee goal scorer for 10 years now and as much as they could use a franchise defenseman as well, theyre much thinner on offensive skill.

  401. avatar AM says:

Gotta be Tavares. Gives us an identity and a star to compete in the East. Will sell tickets and jersey.

  402. avatar ny711ot says:

    tavares.
    hedman equals uwe krupp…..

  403. avatar Brooks Simpson says:

While the highly heralded John Tavares is obviously a talented finisher, I do not see him as the complete package. Victor Hedman combines size and offensive skills in an unusual package, a Chara with more flair, and in an NHL where it’s hard to find someone who can play both ends, skate, and be a physical presence … I’d go with him. We haven’t had anyone like that since Denis Potvin.

  404. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Tavares. Need goal scoring and someone to help sell the team.

  405. avatar Lets Go Isles says:

    Hedman

  406. avatar Thomas32 says:

TAVARES!!!!!! Or I just might cancel my season tix!!

  407. avatar Chris M says:

Tavares. No question. We need a franchise center we haven’t had in 20 years. It may be 20 more if we pass him up. A bit of excitement and a few more tickets sold wouldn’t hurt either.

  408. avatar Snowman says:

Tavares. After 400+ comments, most of which are supporting JT, I don’t think anything else needs to be said.

  409. avatar Anthony says:

John Tavares hands down no question.

  410. avatar JPinVA says:

Not knowing enough about either i will vote for Tavares. that is based solely on their performances at the WJC.
As thin as the islanders are on “D”, they haven’t had a guy that put fanny on the edge of seats since Ziggy.
They also seem to be moving towards a SMALLER mobile, quick “D”…
If that’s the blueprint, stick to it and use UFA as a market for improving the D.

  411. avatar kyle says:

i believe the isles will and should take tavares in this draft because he is the best talent in the league no offense to hedman… but look at every year they dont have the scoring and with 30-whatever games they lost by 1 goal tavares can drastically bring down that number since hes a sniper… he also brings a marketability to the team and gives the isles a face of the franchise (no more dp face of franchise) also if he becomes everything hes supposed to it could entice other players to want to play (if the lighthouse is built)

  412. avatar ken says:

Tavares.. right now our biggest need is staying on LI. A young, marketable star is just what the doctor offered. the hockey gods smiled on us last night, and lets take advantage. Isles fans deserve something to be proud of.

  413. avatar Danny says:

    John Tavares, no questions asked.

  414. avatar dmen77 says:

John Tavares. This team hasn’t had a true goal scorer since Ziggy was traded to LA.

To put it in perspective, who would you rather be right now – the Caps or the Rangers?

Caps – Dynamic young scoring forwards, Ok defense, Average goaltending

Rags – No offense, Good Defense, Great Goaltending

If you think the Caps will win the series – go with Tavares
If you think the Rags will win the series – go with Hedman

  415. avatar Scott G says:

Considering the fact that none of the people who commented know anything…
Hedman is the choice becuase Denis Potvin says so. Hedman will play half the game, Tavares will get a third, and prospects like him are so far and few between. He is as closely compared to Lidstrom, best franchise player in 10 years other than Marty, as we have seen in the past 15 years. Draft the d-man, and sign the scorer. Give Ricky the much needed help, and remember that defense wins championships!

  416. avatar Duke says:

Tavares. This franchise needs to add some excitement, and Tavares will simply be more exciting.

  417. avatar Josh says:

    Tavares

  418. avatar skatelen8 says:

    Tavares or I’ll cry

  419. avatar Moose says:

Tavares…he is everything this team has been missing, he has star power and will form a dominate 1st line with KO for years to come. He has the ability to help keep the Isles in Nassau, which is way more important than building from the way out. The D needs help but you can always find a Dman, all the impact fowards in the league are locked up long term.

  420. avatar Andrew says:

    Tavares.

  421. avatar John R. says:

John Tavares. I was in Hedmans court until I saw the interviews on Versus last night. Hedman is too timid and seemed like he couldn’t care less about the whole process. Granted it was after midnight in Sweden I believe but still, there was no excitement in his face at all. What I won’t do is get caught up in this “we need JT because the media doesn’t respect us” nonsense. Who cares what the media think? Who are they that they’re so important that we now need to pick players they will like? Man that burns me. Pick JT because he’s a hell of a hockey player and like every other Canadian born hockey player wants nothing more than to win a Stanley Cup. But lets not annoint him the second coming of Bossy until he actually does something. The kid still has to work hard and earn his way.

  422. avatar Chris says:

    Tavares

  423. avatar ken says:

    LETS GO CAPS!!

  424. avatar DC23 says:

Hedman by a nose…..you build from the back line.

  425. avatar Mal Adroit says:

Hands down, Tavares. Although we need help everywhere (sadly, including goal!), by far our biggest weakness is our complete lack of skill at forward — no one can put the puck in the net. Last in goals scored, no 20 goal scorer and our leading point getter was a dman. On top of that, Streit has turned out to be a legitimate top 2 dman, but we have no legitimate top line forward. Lastly, although I wanted Schenn last year over Filatov, I think Tavares has greater potential impact for us than Hedman — for all the talk of “best since Pronger,” Hedman despite his size does not have the physical presence or shut-down ability of Pronger. He’s big, yes, and if he played with Pronger’s edge I’d think harder about it, but unless he develops that he seems more like a taller Mark Streit than the next Chris Pronger — granted, Streit rocks, but that’s not the same impact Tavares can have even if is “only” a PPG, 40-40 guy. On top of that, Tavares, a sniper, would look awfully good growing up next to our only other real O player, Okposo, who is a better passer than shooter. Lastly I’ll say, for all the talk of “build from the nets out,” you take BPA, and if you ask any GM in the league to pick one player from the NHL to build a team around, you’ll get different answers to be sure, but they will all be choosing among Crosby, Ovy, Malkin, etc. and not Nieds, Pronger or Lidstrom despite how great those players are. The reason is you can build a pretty good D without a mega-star dman, b/c the dropoff from an elite D to “just” a very good dman isn’t so high as the dropoff from an elite scorer, a true game breaker, to an average forward.

  426. avatar Schultz39 says:

    Tavares

  427. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

    John Tavares – Without Hesitation

Simple explanation. The Isles need a game changer & someone that will be a catalyst … Someone who can open up the ice for teammates. He expects nothing less than excellence from himself and has THE GIFT to score in the clutch (Exhibit A – The recent WJC where even Hedman couldn’t stop him)

I acknowledge defense wins championships, but teams acquire defensive studs usually after said stud signs with a developed offensive team … The Ducks didn’t cultivate Pronger & Niedermeyer … Yes, some lucky teams have career defenders, but these days defenders reach UFA status before peaking and leave.

  428. avatar sec301 says:

#91 JOHN TAVARES giggty giggty goo

  429. avatar KLO says:

I think they should take Tavares. Both those guys are good but we need someone to give us hope and to cheer for. Its easier to cheer for a forward and we sure need the goals.

  430. avatar Chris says:

    John Tavares undoubtedly

  431. avatar Billy H says:

    JOHN TAVARES

  432. avatar Riley says:

Hedman – rare defensive standout. Has experience playing against men in Sweden, not kids in the OHL. Goals can come from so many other players. bergenheim, okposo, hunter, bailey, i can see all of them adding 5 goals to their season totals this year.

  433. avatar puck-o says:

Tavares- franchise centers are tough to find we just signed a top flight defensemen( Streit).

  434. avatar vigs says:

The crowd was chanting “Tavares” last weekend, and because of that I want them to take Tavares. The fan backlash will be massive if Garth goes with Hedman, the last thing this team needs is more fans calling it quits on the Isles.

However, I truly believe Hedman will be the better overall player in the long run, because I see Tavares maxing out at 30-35 goals a year. That’s still very good, but he won’t be the superstar that everyone is billing him as. JMHO.

  435. avatar DM says:

tavares – should be able to score 20-25 as a rookie and become the first legitimate #1 stud center we’ve had in who knows how long. hedman looks unbelievable as well but this locks in a star goal-scorer and recognizeable name to casual fans…

  436. avatar Knight of Cups says:

Tavares for the scorer he may become and the repect for the organization he would bring. The off ice marketing benefits could be endless. The Lighthouse should be easier to rally for with him in the equation

  437. avatar rob76 says:

Our leading scorer last year didnt have 50 points(Comrie,49) We didnt have a 20 goal scorer for the first time ever this year – both seasons we finished in bottom five. WE NEED TAVARES…as soon as its announced i will buy at least one model of a 91 JT jersey and renew season tix…

  438. avatar Daniel says:

John Tavares. The excitement he will bring to the Island will be worth it alone. He is a game changer, and will bring some much needed hype to our team. Kids on LI who play this wonderful sport will want to wear his number and grow up to be him. We need a player to be proud of and Tavares can be that player.

  439. avatar NYI FYI Sean says:

John Tavares, hands down. No knock at Hedman, he is a great talent, but the numbers don’t lie. Tavares is going to be a super star, and the type of sniper that we need.

Again I say, JT JT JT JT!!!!!!

  440. avatar Isles Youth says:

TAVARES. He can score and he can sell tickets. I know that people are desperate for a cup or at least a run in the playoffs and some may argue that we aren’t here to sell tickets we are here to win a cup but that really isn’t the only thing. I am desperate for hockey to become more popular here on LI and so yea I think John Tavares will bring more income to the Isles and ultimately make hockey on LI more popular. Also the Isles could get some press coverage, could you imagine that?

  441. avatar Darwin says:

Tavares. I’ve never been this excited about potentially getting a player. Just make it happen.

  442. avatar bones says:

    Tavares

The Isles have been one of the lowest scoring teams the past 2 years. We need Offense.

  443. avatar Chris A says:

Tavares its simple he scores goals, the more goals you score the more games you win, the more games you win the more seats that are filled without the aid of the family fun pack

  444. avatar isles99 says:

look at the caps, because of a couple of offensive stars, they are a team to be reckoned with and are extemely fun to watch…
now look at the rags, they have great goaltending and good defense and they hardly squeezed into the playoffs…
so TAKE JOHN TAVARES!!! CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP JOHN TAVRES!!!

  445. avatar Steve S says:

John Tavares. What franchise defenseman plays for Pittsburgh? The Pens made the Finals last year, no?

  446. I like both, but I have thought more about offense, so I’d take Tavares. He’ll be exciting playing alongside Okposo (hoping they become a 1-2 punch for goals), and I think the Isles can attract some UFAs with Tavares in the organization.

Also, don’t simply throw money at Gilroy. Don’t throw money at any UFA or college prospect. Garth has set a good tone for smart, measured free agent signings, so there is no reason to change that now. Lastly, anyone who wants to throw money at a potential player is also going to call for Garth’s head if that player turns out to be a bust.

  447. avatar Fred says:

Hedman. As much as I gravitate to Tavares my thoughts are that a franchise defenseman is much harder to find then a scorer. With the Isles salary cap, they could sign one of several highly regarded free agents. Hedman is a much better skater then Tavares which much better suits Gordan’s system. Tavares has been known to “lose interest” which my not be the best fit on a young “rebuilding” team and, I don’t get the impression that he would be interested in signing a long term contract. In a perfect world, we would trade our number 1 pick to Tampa for their number two pick and Vincent LeCavalier (he’s been rumoured out for a while and would give Tampa Tavares). We then take Hedman with our 2nd pick. We would have a blueline of Witt, Martinek…Hedman, Sutton…Streit, Hillen/Gervais/Meyer and get LeCavalier. Since winning the lottery, I figured shoot for the moon.

  448. avatar John says:

    Tavares at #1
Rundblad at #30 or try and move up if you think he’s going sooner.

Serious hope for these toiling masses.

  449. avatar Eric says:

JT. Anything else, and I’m done with this team. And this is coming from a life-long fan. Don’t get cute, Snow and Wang. JT or bust.

  450. avatar walter says:

    hedman

  451. avatar Jason W. says:

    Tavares all the way.

  452. avatar The Ice Man says:

John Tavares is the pick. The game is hockey and to win you must put the biscuit in the basket. Tavares can do that like no Islander has been able to since Ziggy left the scene. We already have an All-Star D-Man in Streit and while it would be nice to have (future) All-Stars throughout the line-up, we need the sniper now.

  453. avatar matt c says:

Wang did not have to lose a ton of money. He could have fired Milbury when he bought the team, but he kept him on and for far too long. He could have had Neil Smith as GM, but he comes up with this unconventional “committee” form of mgmt and drive Smith and Lafontaine away. Also, he’s pursued the LH roject for far too long. He should have been talking to Ratner and WP and publically expressing interest in Queens and Brooklyn a long time ago.

I’m not dwelling on the past, but I am bringing up that his decisions as owner very much helped create these money-losing seasons

  454. avatar Brettmal says:

John Tavares because first, he is at a better class than Hedman. Second, he can score! (which is what the Islanders would need to win a Stanley Cup). Finally, ticket sales would go through the roof at the coliseum. Therefore, JOHN TAVARES.

  455. avatar tony says:

Tavares….with a sharpshooter like JT the other guys will need Hedman. Didn’t they pass up Zach Parise? Don’t want to do that again

  456. avatar d-man says:

#477: no. the lease, the crap building… that’s what did it. do you forget we made the playoffs 4 times in the last 7 seasons. not terrible. only 2 years ago we had 92 points. that team with yashin, osgood and peca was awesome and would have gone far without the bs from the maple leafs and league. it’s the lease. it’s the building. it’s the 77 acres of nothing. yes better moves would mean he would be losing less. big freaking deal. he’d still be losing millions. it was his choice to buy the team. so you either have to trash him for being dumb for buying a dying franchise or praise him for saving a dying franchise. not both.

Here is a simple question, why were so many Isles fans, including Ken Morrow so happy when we were awarded the first overall pick? We were guarantted atleast one of the two, most likely Hedman at #2 right? But now we know that we can draft John Taveras so lets stop the nonsense, we are selecting JT, get the jerseys #91 ready to order! The leafs think they can have their way with us becuase we passed over Schenn, so they think we are idiots and will trade the pick. That will not happen, Burke has issues.

  460. avatar Ben says:

Some suggest trading down with Tampa and getting Vinny in the deal. Vinny gets paid too much $$$ and is 8-9 years older than JT.

Getting Vinny is not a future move, it’s a move for now. In 2-3 years, JT will have adjusted to the NHL game and will lead this team.

The future is looking bright my friends. one more developing year to stock up again and we are off to the races!

    Go Islanders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  462. avatar Tumer says:

TAVARES. Since Lafontaine, the only 40+ goal scorers we’ve had are Turgeon, King, Ferraro, Palffy and Blake.

I think you can build a playoff-caliber defense with the late 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks (McCabe, Chara, Shea Weber, Mike Green are some examples of current NHLers taken in that area of the draft) and smart FA moves like Streit.

  463. avatar hathead68 says:

    JOHN TAVARES
    1-team needs #1center (Bailey a good #2)
2-team needs a sniper… Mark Streit says so!
3-fans need reason to be excited
    4-team needs GOOD publicity
5-Tavares and Okposo together sounds and feels great
6- he can improve all aspects of his skating
7-can still address defense with our other picks, and we have some pretty good defense prospects
8-Garth wouldn’t get 2nd guessed because Tavares is the consensus #1 pick

  464. avatar nyi351 says:

John Tavares!!! We need a superstar. One thing Ive learned about hockey is that if someone is declared a superstar at 14 the dude is a superstar. One thing that is understated is that John is Portuguese(his parents immirgrated from Portugal). Long Island has one of the biggest Portuguese communities in the US. That should be a huge plus for not only John but also the Islanders. Plus this is very reminisant of the Penguins situation from a few years past. Where the team needs a new arena and the draft a superstar. Think that might get the ball rolling on the lighthouse?

I’m sure Hedman is very talented and will be a great defensemen but the scouting reports regarding his lack of physical edge scares me. With that size there is no one reason he shouldnt be a huge physical force. He is also playing in Sweden which makes it much more difficult to judge how much success he will have in NHL. JT has been analyzed (over analyzed) since he was 15 and he is still the #1 ranked skater. Enough said. JT is the safe and smart choice.

  475. avatar stuck in Devil country says:

As you can see by the overwhelming support of this forum for drafting tavares, Garth has no choice but to take him. If we dont walk away w/ him on draft day it would be a huge disappointment.

  476. avatar greg says:

    I take Tavares for sure.

Interesting enough comments about the Caps, Pens, and Rags. Look at the game tonight of the Caps vs Rags, clearly the caps have a mediocre D core. Sure green is a sniper, but he is a terrible dman. All of this comes out in the playoffs. The Rangers defense is way better. The pens made the cup finals, but didnt win, exactly because of their defense.

I am all about Tavares now, we should think about signing another solid Dman or look for one in the draft with our pics packaged for a mid to low teen choice.

  478. avatar WM says:

Post # 500 votes for JT!!!! Hands down!

  479. avatar Dannzzigg says:

The Isles should choose Hedman for all the hockey reasons. The political and fan-reaction reasons will force them to pick Tavares, but Hedman is the smarter choice if you look at it from a strictly hockey perspective.

Teams are built from the goal out. If you make the not-so-given assumption that Dipietro is the future and present in net, then your next step has to be on D.

Hedman can and will dominate games, much like Chara does now. Dmen like that are much harder to come by then skilled forwards.

  480. avatar The Real Vukota says:

When did Hedman become this big physical D-Man? He is not physical and never will be. Tavares has to be the pick in order to save this franchise. In normal times if the team wasn’t on the brink of leaving you could make a strong case to draft VH. Under the current circumstances JT is a no brainer!!!

I bought my season tkts in the summer of 2000 after Wang bought the team.
I feel either player will have a huge impact on the team, but at this point in time we need a scorer/finisher who will bring the fans back.

Please Garth and Co. Pick Tavares.

  482. avatar the1gwiz says:

    John Tavares is the choice.

In 5 years or so I have no doubt that Hedman will become a perennial Norris candidate, but I think, with the type of game he plays, the adjustment period for Hedman to reach his peak will be longer. From what I’ve seen, I feel Tavares can step in and be a 30+ goal scorer right out of the gate, and if there has ever been a time the franchise needed a player to step in and make an immediate splash, it is now.

  483. avatar Mike from Riverhead says:

    Tavares.

Sure Hedman will be a fine pro, but Tavares gives you an excitement level that has been lacking from the Isles in ages. Having a flashy scorer would also make you quite more marketable. I think it’s just as important for the Islanders to become a viable name for future players to go along with become a better team on ice.

  484. avatar Heineken says:

Everyone should call the isles box office for season tickets. Leave your number to call back. When the rep calls back tell them your intrested, but only if we draft Tavares! Im sure with tons of calls like that it well get thru to Wanger Snowy and the whole front office!!!

  487. avatar Justin says:

The Isles need to somehow put together two lines capable of scoring at any time. Right now they have Okpsoo and Bailey with offensive potential and not much else. Hunter, Bergenheim and Neilsen are OK, but hardly game-breakers. Tavares is a necessity.

  488. avatar Dr. Generosity says:

I think Hedman may be the better player.
Give me the big D-man who will play 25-30 minutes a game, score 20-30 goals, and anchor this team to its next Cup.

Only way to lose here is to trade the pick.

  489. Tavares…Hedman will be great I think, but this franchise needs a Tavares type jolt…I would not trade the pick…If they do I am dumping my season tickets!

Tavares…as proven you can get a great defensemen with good scouting and a stroke of luck (Streit via free agency….or look at Caps drafting Green late in first round).

You cannot get a sniper who scores a ton of goals via free agency. They won’t come to the Island.

  504. avatar Glenn says:

Tavares. We need a goal scorer in the worst way, and he’ll bring the sexy back to the Coliseum.

  505. avatar Jeff says:

Answer: John Tavares for numerous reasons:
    1) Need #1 center since Turgeon.
    2) Goal scorer badly needed (sniper), as per Mark Streit.
    3) Bailey will be a great #2 center, and Tavares takes pressure off Bailey and Okposo to produce, and makes them better.
    4) Scoring forwards now will welcome LI.
    5) Publicity, marketing, fans, excitement.
    6) Lighthouse project marketability.
    7) Hedman when he turns 30 can change his mind and go back to Sweden, and I heard his performance was lacking at WJC.
    8) Gilroy and Komisarek are for the taking on defense.

  506. avatar Craig says:

I used to think it was so clear cut that Tavares should be the choice but it’s not. Hedman has such amazing skill especially for his size that it’s hard to ignore. However, we have Mark Streitas our #1 dman with some solid defenders after him. Hedman would immediately make the Isles D one of the most feared in the league though. However, I have to go with my gut and say Tavares is the choice. The reasons are for a few. He’d make the islanders immediately better (Hedman I feel would take some time). Tavares would be the face of the Islanders like Crosby has become for the Penguins. We need that. We need someone to call our star, our poster child. We need someone to tell our fans and community that the Islanders are focused on winning. We need the fan base to grow and I think more free agents would be more willing to come to us if we had someone like Tavares. We need an identity and he can bring us that.

Of course if for some outrageous reason that we trade the pick, I’m hoping for Duchene. I think he’s probably the safest, best all around player in the draft. But let’s not hope for that to happen.

    PICK TAVARES!!!

  509. avatar Merrick says:

I often ask myself which player is the most likely to sign long-term with the Islanders? But that goes too far ahead.

While I’m partial to great defensemen in building championships, Tavares proved himself (again) at the World Juniors, adds sizzle, interest from Canada, and probably sells a lot more tickets. Thus, I go with Tavares.

  515. avatar Travelchic59 says:

I haven’t seen either one of these kids play, so I’ll go with the popular pick and say Tavares, though I am sure Hedman will work out just fine for us also.

  516. avatar KG says:

Tavares. However I think the argument is much closer than the spread on this blog indicates. It’s very possible Hedman becomes the more dominant player. He has franchise dman written all over him.

That said, our franchise is flagging, this is a business..bottom line we need to put fans in the seats. Tavares!

  517. avatar Comet says:

Go for Hedman! We would have one of the top defence’s in the league with him. 6’6 skating d-man. Does anyone remember Zdeno Chara?

  518. avatar Section 320 rocks!!!!!! says:

for my money I take Tavares! I have been looking at this kid for years and the prospect of the Isles getting him is almost unrealistic. I know they will both be great pros but we have not had a sniper since Yashin in 01-02? peca? Palfy? Were overdue. I was one of the people at the last game of the season chanting John Tavares. I wouldnt be to disappointed with Hedman but we need Tavares! Not that we dont need Hedman we need Tavares off the ice as well. He better not trade the pick that is all I ask! Unless he is given a Lindrosesque deal in which case I still dont know if Id do it because I have been looking at Tavares for so long.

  519. avatar dalcy says:

drafting Tavares will make Snow’s draft moves last year look a whole lot better better.

  520. avatar CMB says:

After watching this year’s WJC, I’ve been convinced that John Tavares is the best player available in the draft.

If Victor Hedman were a more physical player, along the lines of Dion Phaneuf, I’d probably feel differently. But, I think that he doesn’t take enough advantage of his size.

I would much rather have Tavares plus a smallish, skilled defenseman than Hedman and another center. So, Tavares it is.

  521. avatar Rich Pilon is an Animal says:

  530. avatar Dan says:

I say you GOTTA go with Taveras. The lack of scoring (as others have mentioned) is brutal. Also I don’t think that their D is that horrible right now. Yes it could always use an upgrade but overall i don’t think the defense is that horrible especially with the injuries and lack of having a good goalie. I have the idea that a great d-men makes more of an impact because he plays more – but u still gotta go with Taveras. Players like this do not come around very often.

  531. avatar Dan says:

As PB has said. With the 21st pick and the 2nd rounder maybe try and move up and get a d-man. I feel like we now have 4 legit centers.
    Bailey

  537. avatar Joe says:

Let’s all be honest with each other and ourselves. CB has done a great job of outlining not only what each of these players brings to the table, but what much of the outside hockey world thinks about them as well.

In the 1970′s, before our run of glory, Bill Torrey selected Denis Potvin with the #1 overall pick – and justified choosing a defenseman because he would be on the ice more than half the game. As most of Torrey’s picks did, Potvin turned out to be a hall of famer and one of the biggest reasons the Islanders dynasty remains one of the greatest in sports history. Obviously we all doubt that Hedman or anyone will ever be Potvin, but the point is the same.

In today’s game, it still remains necessary to build from the back end out. With a healthy Ricky, the Islanders back end can be as good as any in the league, regardless of who we pick up in the offseason on D. DP IS THAT GOOD when he is healthy. We all saw it – and are afraid to talk about it – because god forbid he gets hurt again, how will we be able to stand up to Ranger fans then? How would we be able to fight them that DP is better than King Five-Hole then?

For those of you who watched the draft lottery, Kenny Morrow stood up there and said, “well, you build a hockey team from the back end… AND DOWN THE MIDDLE,” something that is very rarely added on to the old hockey cliche, “build from the back up.” I think he was alluding to the fact that the Isles want Tavares.

    Let’s face facts.

    1. If Tavares was eligible in last year’s draft, he would have gone #1 over Stamkos.

    2. God bless Charles Wang for sticking with this team for so long and for dealing with the politics of the Lighthouse project (probably one of the reasons he bought the team in the first place). The man is bleeding millions of dollars a year with this franchise. It’s time we have a player that will put fans in the stands – and that player is Tavares, not Hedman.

    3. With the rumors of moving, the tease of last year’s draft and trading down TWICE, the fans deserve SOMETHING they can stick in the faces of fans all over the rest of the Atlantic Division and the NHL. With the season we endured, we need to be able to say, “Well would you rather have gone 1 and done in the playoffs or finished last and gotten John Tavares?”

    4. It has been pointed out that a difference between the top two in interviews has been to one question – “How does it feel to make it to the NHL?”
Hedman: “I’m proud to make it.”
JT: “I want to win the Stanley Cup.”
So do Islander fans JT, so do Islander fans.

    5. If I had a dollar for every Islanders fan who said, “If we don’t draft Tavares, I’m done with this team,” I’d be able to buy season tickets for life.

I have to be honest. I’ve been an Islander fan all my life. I’ve been an optimist about the direction of the team all my life. Garth knows that this pick may be THE single most important pick in franchise history. As someone who trusts the GM and thinks about all the possible scenarios he is going to hear before now and June 26, I keep thinking to myself, “Well if someone offers a #1 center, 2 elite prospects, and 3 first round picks, we’d have to take it…”

But when I think about how much it would make my stomach cringe to watch John Tavares in anything but Royal Blue and Orange, it kills me.

That’s why on June 26th, Garth will take the podium at the NHL draft, thank who he needs to thank, and perhaps with a tear in his eye knowing that the “rebuild” finally has a star to build around, will be proud to annouce,

“With the 1st overall selection in the 2009 NHL Draft, the New York Islanders ARE PROUD TO SELECT John Tavares.”

    Let’s Go Islanders!

John Tavares – hands down, slam dunk, better than Parise

He is the consensus number 1 prospect and has been for a few years. He would have been picked before Stamkos last year. We need goals and he will lead our team in goals as a rookie next season. We need a “face” for the franchise. That is not DP, it would be JT.

Many people who I have spoken with would return to the Coliseum if Tavares is chosen. Hedman will NOT bring them back. I will buy a Tavares jersey for myself and my son shortly after he is picked. I will not buy a Hedman jersey.

  550. avatar Johnny Islander says:

    Hedman…

1)Will give you many more minutes than Tavares over the length of his entry level deal.

2)Has been playing with MEN (not boys) already

3)His physical attributes at his age do not come along very often.

4)The old addage, “You build a team from the net, out”

5)Probably a better fit for “GO-GO” than Tavares, and…purely speculation, that he is the better “character” guy.

6)Duchene is probably the better fit for the Isles as far as forwards go, but Snow would be cruicified if he took him over the top 2.

Iam sure long island will grow on you, we have beaches, the long island disstressway, the hamptons, and of course the lovley town of uniondale were you will find many high end establishments to kick back and relax in. So need to worry. Look foward to seeing you on the ice in october.

    Yours truly,

    Hopefull Islander fan

I vote for HEDMAN. But really you could flip a coin and I’d be happy with either.

    Tavares, we need a sniper

  564. avatar mike says:

    Hedman,

Unfortunately everyone is looking at the marketing side of things, and I understand that, but that will not win us a championship. Look at a team like detroit, who has been winning for as long as I can remember, and who has been on the team for all there cup, Lidstrom. The Devils had Stevens, the Rangers had Leach, the Ducks had Pronger and Niedermyer, the Isles had Potvin, the Oilers had Coffey. I understand they all had goal scorers too, but they way to bring respectability to a franchise is a solid D core, which we lack.

  565. avatar Steve says:

I would say take Tavares. I am no hockey scout, and none of us have seen these guys in person-sometimes you see guys on the ice have a feel for the game, and we don’t know if these guys do or don’t. Hedman might wind up to be a beast, but it seems Tavares is the game-changer. Plus, sign a dman and you can have both.

  566. avatar bossy22 says:

    Tavares for 3 reasons now.

    1) ticket sales
    2) more goals
    3) to piss off Leaf fans

  567. avatar TONYSAC says:

TAVARES!!!! I think with having 18 goals as our most goals scored by a player this season, we need someone who can put the puck in the net…Tavares can bring instant production to this team, where Hedman may take 2-3 seasons to become the Lidstrom, Pronger, Chelios’ of the NHL….I think if we draft TAVARES, we pick up the next best defensmen with our 2nd first round pick, and also look for a big D-MEN FA in the offseason…Not only would TAVARES bring instant production, but he would bring instant credibility to the ISLANDERS,more media attention, more sold out games, and more of a reason to make sure the LH project gets completed….I will also say, that if we choose HEDMAN, I will not be angry or disappointed….Its a win/win for us!!!

    LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!

  568. avatar avolp55TURGEONFICHAUD says:

We need them both everyone. If we have to pick (which we do) you take whichever player impacts you the most for next season, helping the players around him to grow up and improve. As a Center, Tavares will be in a position to distribute the puck and improve some of the below-average play of our other “prospect” forwards.

IMO, Hedman will be a very valuable asset, however he will not necessarily improve the other PLAYERS on our squad. Sure our team defense will greatly appreciate his addition, however I strongly believe that by adding Tavares instead of Hedman, it will propel the development of some of our other forwards over the course of next season.

  569. avatar geduffer says:

I still think you build from the goal out. I would take Hedman. However if you want to get the additional benefit of giving certain general managers a kick in the cojones, then taking Hedman would do it to Brian Lawton and taking Tavares would hit Burkie so hard they’d be draped over his ears. Too bad we can’t have the first 4 picks. ;)

  570. avatar jbranny says:

TAVARES, TAVARES, TAVARES. He will do so much more for this team than just scoring goals. Just think, Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, Bergenheim, Comeau. What an O-corps! Then concentrate at the goalie position. When our goalies play well we win.

  571. avatar LooNTooNs says:

Build from the goal out is not “The New NHL” goals win games now

  572. avatar David says:

    Tavares

  573. avatar Valentino says:

    Tavares

JT will win you more games than Hedman will.

  574. avatar WarrenG says:

Tavares in a landsline, we have pretty good defense, Witt, Steit, Gerveis, Sutton, Meyer, hillin. we need scorers to go with Oko, Bergie, Tambie and DOugie. JT JT JT JT!!

  575. avatar Marc N. says:

Tavares. It’s quite simple – We need an exciting game breaker to put us back on the map. A great defenseman is nice, but unless it’s the 2nd coming of Bobby Orr, Tavares is the guy to make us relevant again. Who would you rather pay to watch: Chris Pronger or Pavel Daysuk?

  576. avatar ShardZ says:

    Tavares.

Its a difficult choice for me because we have such a huge need for both. I disagree with the people who say our defense is fine, or that its easier to fill the holes on defense. We just haven’t had a good offense in so long, that its hard to say no when a forward like this is staring you in the face

  577. avatar Dan Kepert says:

You want a Stanley cup.. he’s your man.

For the quick fix and selling tix.. go with the other guy.

  578. avatar Marc from Troy says:

First off, thank you, terry (395) for the valuable marital advice! Good stuff.

To the question at hand, I’ll offer, albeit reluctantly and barely, another Tavares vote. The positives for both of these guys have been beaten to death already, and, truly, I don’t think the Isles could go wrong either way. I’m probably making the trip to LI for the draft party, and, I promise you, I’m not complaining either way. Hell, part of the reason to make the trip in the first place will be to watch all of the other reactions.

Couple of comments in response to the zillion posts leading up to this:

    1. To those threatening to be done with this team if they don’t draft Tavares: See ya. Don’t let the door hit you in the arse on your way out.

    2. Re: defensemen generally needing more time to develop and that they will not be at their peak until it’s time to become UFA… True, almost all of the time. But Hedman is not just any other defense prospect. Most young defense prospects do not already have the experience of playing top 2 pair in one of the top leagues in the world AGAINST MEN (not against kids in Juniors) – and prospering, to boot. The bet here is that it won’t take Hedman as long.

(And could we please stop the analysis of an interview conducted with the kid in the middle of the night on a ten second delay? What the hell did you expect his face to look like? Not like he knows for sure where he’s going yet. Such a non-issue it’s frightening.)

    3. What impact is Tavares really going to have on the LHP? If Wang is serious about needing “clarity” by the time the season starts in October, exactly how many games will Tavares have played by then? Roughly zero. Hope I’m wrong, but I think many of you are vastly overestimating the potential impact of this kid on that project. And for those comparing this to the Crosby/new Pens arena situation, they’re apples and oranges. Isles are not simply trying to get a new arena. Way too many other factors that need to be addressed for a project of this size, regardless of how much one player might help the team.

Sorry for the length of the above, CB…

  579. avatar Angry Bill says:

    Oops, missed the 12:00 cutoff.

    Tavares for me.

Since either player may walk at 25/26 as a free agent, we will probably get more out of Tavares then Hedman in the early years of their careers.

  580. avatar Scott from Newburgh says:

After some thoght I have to go Tavares. I think you need to build from the defence out but the Islanders need the offence a bit more right now along with a new face of the franchise. No disrspect to DP but Tavares will make people have to take notice of the Islanders. And in a positive way for a change.

    Tavares
and @607, lets talk capitals…a floundering franchise that was desperate for a spark, they got jagr…and people began to talk…they got rid of jagr, and people began to talk badly, they drafted Alexander the great and now they get sunday games of the week on nbc… if you dont think a nationally hyped franchise sniper vs a super-solid franchise D-man doesnt get you the notice of others than you are missing something…i mean, when i hear “this week’s game featuring drew doughty…” then i’ll apologize to you sir…plus in all honesty, in the system they play, the better defensive fit is Ellis

  589. avatar bob l says:

and dont forget fans, root for the pens so we get to move up to a 3rd rounder instead of a 4th…#1, #30, #31, #37, #(wherever bruins finish) so maybe snow gets creative and offers #30/31/37/bruins 2nd rounder, for #2 overall, there’d be a nice way to have our cake and eat it too

  591. avatar Frank says:

    TAVARES!!! No discussion!

  592. avatar Nick says:

JT…Anything else and I’m literally done with this team…it’s sad to say, but too much stuff has gone down through the years to screw this up and get a pass…Not to mention that anything beside Tavares and the team will probably end up moving to KC…I’ll be praying every night from now until June 25th that Snow pulls the trigger…And honestly, it’s a shot on our franchise that people actually think we would be stupid enough to either trade this pick or select Hedman…We have acted foolishly on too many occasions, so the speculation surrounding what we’ll do, though crazy, is justified I guess…But all I can say is this: It’s time to become relevant again, and JT is the only way to make that happen.

  593. avatar Chad says:

Taveras. Cant go wrong with Hedman either though.

  597. avatar BC says:

    John Tavares-

I think that although we have great forward prospects in Okposo and Bailey and others, none of them approach the potential of John Tavares.

Also nothing against Hedman, and I think he will become a great defenseman in the league, but I see him more as an offensive defenseman rather than a defensive defenseman. However, we already have a top notch offensive defenseman in Mark Streit, so if Hedman turns out to be more that kind of defenseman, we already have the hole of the top pairing, power play running, offensive defenseman.

  598. avatar Mike says:

    Tavares!!!!!!!!!!

  599. avatar donm says:

HEDMAN – because I think he’s going tp be the more valuable player over the course of his career. I haven’t seen anything good written about Tavares defense. One praiseful review said he probably won’t be asked to play defense his first couple of years in the NHL. On what team?
    Hedman

  600. avatar unfahHetedeef says:

I’m the only one in this world. Can please someone join me in this life? Or maybe death…

  601. avatar KK says:

Tavares. Hedman might not even be as good as Doughty, or so they say. You don’t pass up on Tavares and keeping the NYI precarious situation overall in mind, you grab the star power. Hedman isn’t the 1st pick in this draft.

  602. avatar CDrama says:

    Tavares –
If Snow wanted the Big D, he should have picked Schenn last year
