TAVARES POINTLESS BEFORE WANG AND SNOW
Kid’s agent tells Logie that JT hopes to be No. 1
UPDATED at 9:50 pm - Windsor wins tonight in London, 5-4 in overtime, after the home team rallies with three goals in the third to tie it. The winning goal is scored 59 seconds into overtime by Andrei Loktionov, assisted by Taylor Hall and Dale Mitchell. Hall, for now, is the consensus first overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft. With Garth Snow and Charles Wang in attendance (as per Greg Logan), John Tavares is held without a point.

Greg Logan, bloggin’ maniac of late, has two excellent items tonight. He breaks exclusively that Charles Wang and Garth Snow are watching London vs. Windsor. He also has an interview with Pat Brisson, the agent for London’s John Tavares. Brisson tells Newsday that Tavares wants to be selected first overall by the Islanders and he has some interesting comments on scouting reports and Matt Duchene, also a client. My hat’s off to you, Greg. I’ll do my best to meet the challenge.
In other items, I want to clarify that Kyle Woodlief’s work on the Redline Report has nothing to do with Toronto or any kind of conspiracy. He has Duchene over Tavares, I had some fun with it, and that’s all there is. Heck, this site had Duchene in the conversation for the last four months, too.
Said it before and I’ll probably say it a few more times over the next few weeks: if any scout or hockey ops person is going to place 80% of their grade for Tavares in these OHL playoffs after a four-year body of work, that’s how legendary mistakes are made. In an unrelated item, apparently there were concerns about Zach Parise’s skating when he was 18.
My point exactly.
Comments.

good news on them going to game is that they are also seeing Ellis play, hes been playing really well from what I can tell from the articles and stat sheets on the OHL playoffs. Also not so good in the sense that it is 4 – 1 windsor.
-
u think tavares knows they ar ethere
-
is Snow and Wang allowed to talked to Tavares? also I heard since JT is London’s best player, Windsor is paying extra attention to him and surrounding him everytime he touches the puck.
-
CB, Logie is kicking you a$$ lately, you better pick up your game
-
Why is Wang there? That’s not encouraging news to me, considering that we all know what happens when he gets involved in personnel decisions.
-
Why is Wang there at all? Let Garth and Co do their jobs.
-
wang wants to make sure he knows his investment before offering a 15-year deal…obviously.
-
Wang will be the one paying the guy so I guess I can’t complain about him wanting to see a game.
-
Wang to Snow, before the game:”What’s the jersey # of kid we are looking at tonight?”
“61,Charles”
Wang after the match:” This Watson kid is good. And tall.We are taking him,Garth…”
-
if i owned the isles i would be in london, ontario tonight too. it’s one of the most important decisions in franchise history so you would think that the owner would want to be aware of what’s going on. if i was wang i would want to meet both tavares and hedman before draft day.
-
London scores three in the 3rd to tie it. Nothing for Tavares.
-
Rags prospect DelZotto on a score sheet…
-
How’s he looking tonight, though?
-
Tavares is not on the score sheet
-
bravo for the dig at Milbury…I was watching him yesterday on NBC and he just has no credibility whatsoever when he says something
-
lets go johnny get the ot winner.
-
didnt get a point the whole game…maybe wang and garth will watch weds too?
-
When I hear Wang is involved in roster decisions I lose faith in this team.
Anyone watching the Ranger game? They are down 4-0 with a minute to go against a 20 year-old goalie.
-
lets not get crazy now because tavares failed to record a point tonight
-
If Snow was in Canada and Wang was in Sweden then I’d worry.
-
Oh no! No points for Tavares! I’m sure he’ll drop to Toronto @ 7 now!
-
Is anyone else worried that Wang is going to judge this kid on the one game he sees him play and think he knows enough to tell Garth what to do? I mean, why they heck is he there? I give Wang credit for all he’s done for the Islanders but know your limitations man. Hockey is just not your area of expertise
-
JT wants to play for the Islanders. The Islanders will draft him. Stop worrying guys.
-
Aaron @ 23 – nope not worried about that personaly.
-
CB, can you please, please, please tell me why in the world Charles Wang is at this game?
I, for the life of me, can’t understand why.
When will this guy be the hands-off owner that he needs to be and stop meddling for crying out loud. He’s an embarassment.
-
I think Wang has enough basic hockey knowledge to understand that you cannot judge a player by one game alone … he’s seen that hundreds of times by now.
John Carlson lit it up for the Knights tonight … good for the local Jersey Boy … ya think the Devils will think they deserve to own his rights over the Caps? LOL!!! Sorry … just having a lil fun.
-
I don’t think they are gonna judge him on one game alone. Especially considering that Tavares was brought into London as a hired gun. The kid already has 19 points in 12 games on a team he’s not very familiar with like he was his previous team.
Snow is probably looking to see what the kid does away from the puck. Wang is probably there to see if this kid can be used to market the franchise.
-
Holy smokes, folks. Calm down about Wang being there. Wow…
-
who cares if wang goes to the game? heaven forbid he care about this hockey team!
-
Just got home from the rink… Tavares wasn’t great tonight… hit the post with just over a minute left in the third, but the kicker was the goalie was down and out and the cage was wide open. Ughhhh the frustration.
-
Did you guys ever think that maybe he wants to get away from his wife for a couple of days, so he joined Garth on the road trip. People need to relax. Maybe the guy wanted to see what Junior hockey is for himself. Or he could be working on a business angle for something else. Geez paranoia, big destroyer….
-
dadi (#10) – i almost spit my water all over my computer screen when i read you post. nice one. Yeah wang just has to stay home. guy learned all his hockey knowledge from Mike Milbury. Should i say more.
-
Wang is at the game because he OWN’S THE FRIGGIN’ TEAM!!!
Jeez…
He’s a smart man.
My 9 year old nephew understands baseball better than most adults. Because he cares about it!!!
I’m sure a grown man of significant intelligence who owns a legendary hockey team and actually gives a CRAP about it has figured out a little bit about the game itself.

Thanks, Chris for giving us this platform. Garth and Charles know our wishes for JT in case they are still sitting on the fence. I know there are many fence sitters too on season tickets who Tavares will convince to open their cheque books!
-
Wang owns the team thats why he’s there. This is an important year for us to draft #1 and also take Tavares. Wang said on the Fan that he will let his scouts and gm do the work. Be happy the man is dedicated to go check out the future of the NYI. C’mon anyone here… if you owned any NHL AHL team im sure 90% of you would be checking out any upcoming player.. of course you gotta check out JT!
-
I think its great Wang was there. It shows he’s engaged and interested. If he disappeared between now and the draft people would complain about how he doesn’t care.
-
#37 – good point. I WOULD be on every scouting trip if I owned the team. Then again, i’d also be saying the crazy stuff Burke is saying…god i make myself sick.
-
Could not agree with you more. This isn’t the Isles with the #2 pick saying who do you take. Isles need Taverse and he needs the Isles. If he can turn this team around it will be huge and the Isles will have their first home grown superstar since Palffy…
-
I agree that the fact Wang is doing his rounds and wants to see this kid for himself shows he at least cares about this team. He’ll do the right thing and let the scouting team choose the best player which is going to be J.T.
-
JT wants to be and play here : D
Snow dnt mess this up.
-
plus im sure wanger and snowy were killing 2 birds with 1 stone! Snowy is getting a chance to show the owner Tavares & also looking at ryan ellis shine in front of them. I so hope we move that 26th pick hoping SJ loses, and our Early 2nd to move up and draft Ellis in the mid Teens.
NYI – #1 Tavares
NYI – #17 -EllisI’d be happy come draft day, then we all sit and pray for healthy DP!
-
If it was my team I would be there. Hell Id hop a plane to Sweden too. I would make it a point to see Duschene too. Then Id let my GM take Tavares…..LOL
-
Ellis is going before that.
Prob between 10-14
-
i wonder if we could trade SJ pick+ two 2nd rounders for a pick around 10th to nab ellis
-
If you want a look at a hands on owner, go look at the Dallas Cowboys.
Wang has been far from hands-on and has let Garth Snow, a brand new GM, work with a laissez-faire style. For someone said to be losing as much money as Wang, I would have no problem with the guy being a little hands on once in a while, anyone losing that dough would do the same and probably a lot more.
-
Tavares will never be as fast a skater as Parise. Let’s not even go there. Personally, I don’t like all this true believer stuff about Tavares, fans making excuses when he doesn’t score, etc. The kid is a supreme offensive talent in the slot and close to the goal, but he’s not a full ice player, let alone a dynamic full ice player. Doesn’t make him useless though, and he’ll improve in certain areas of the game over time.
As for Woodlief, if I recall, he had Chistov above Kovalchuk, Spezza and others in his draft rankings in 2001 at some point. No need for anyone to worry about it. He’s an interesting read, but no scouting service is the gospel. Preferences will vary. Tavares isn’t the fresh face to be excited about after being under the spotlight for so many years, it’s just not very fashionable to extoll Tavares in 2009. In the end, the Islanders will ignore the hubbub and select the player they deem the best fit for the organization. As they should.
-
Here’s a name for ya….Simon Despres..defenseman standing at 6’3 210 hes projected for mid first round..been trying to read up on the boards about this kid and have heard nothing but great things.he could be one of those mid first round gems that just blossom but you have never heard of them. Another guy Zack Kassian 6’3 205 considered to be a straight up powerd foward that can be compared to a Bertuzzi..I would LOVE to see the isles move up in the first round and make a play for either of these guys
-
Dan (39): Palffy… a 1991 second rounder who wound up playing his first games on the Island a few years later, and wound up exceeding his draft expectations. I mention all that because, for all we know, we could already HAVE our next Palffy. Time will tell!
And FIsles (47)- excellent comment!!!
-
If im Wang or Snow here is what i am thinking of after tonights London game.
Wang/ Snow: Ok not a great preformence tonight, but i think that Scott (Gordon) can develop him and make him into a well rounded player. After all he did hit the post and came very close to winning the game at a crucial moment, regardless of not recording any points tonight! I think we can work with this kid!
-
Cholly there to check out JT? Hey Cholly, if a tree falls in the forest etc. does anyone hear it? Cholly, tell your son in law to get the games heard on AM radio so we can hear Tavares, your next big investment.
Thank you.
-
Wang cares, he went to watch a hockey game, whew, what a bad owner. JT will be ok, one game of thousands he has played.
-
Hud, so what he went to the game? He has no hockey sense and does stupid things like signing players to a 15 year contract and keeping Milbury around long after anyone else would of fired him.
-
Wang was there because Snow asked him to tag along and look at the kid that is going to turn this franchise around and help get the lighthouse going.
-
Very strong possibility that Wang and Snow were checking out Tavares and Jankowski was scouting Duchene. They then get together and exchange notes. I am sure at some point Wang and Snow may fly to Sweden to interview Hedman.
-
WTF is Wang doing there!?!?!?
This is the worst news I’ve heard in a while. I thougt he was gonna allow his GM be the GM.
He has no business medeling with the GM’s process. I can’t believe this!!!
We’re NEVER gonna make progress unless Wang stays OUT of it!!!
-
I could care less what Wang is doing there.
He’s the owner. Infact, I’m glad he’d take time out of his schedule to go there.
I would be pissed if Chris Dey was there.Everyone stop worrying. We will draft a great player…San Jose may get upset and we’ll get the 26th (instead of 30th) overall and if Pitt coses out Philly we’ll get their 3rd. So many things to be happy about…isnt this what we wanted? The first hint of any negativity and people take a step towards the ledge? Maybe it has to do with the bored Rangers fans posing as Islanders fans posting nonsense. They should be worried about their team after last nights skunker at the compost facility they call a Garden.
-
LOL- hypersensitive much? The guy just watched a flippin game!
-
56
Charles was there watching the player WE WANT THEM TO DRAFT!
I could understand there being a problem if he was watching an Evander Kane playoff game….then I say be worried.
-
Alright, alright, I will have faith and will try and be positive but there is just cause for the pessimism, sorry for the negitivity. Wang is the owner, he should be interested, obviously.
-
Let’s get this straight… of course Hedman is the best prospect in the draft – a 6’6″ defensemen who can skate, pass everything has to be the best propsect. They don’t come along very often. HOWEVER, he is not the best prospect for the Isles. That is Tavares by a mile for all things mentioned a thousand times in the blogs.
-
Hey, maybe Snowie just wanted to sell him on JT, or maybe the guy just enjoys a hockey game now and then. His own team ain’t playing right now, is it?
And – I can’t believe we still have to go over this – but the 15-yr contract really wasn’t a bad idea. It’s like a company that can’t do without a certain widget for its product. It decides to lock up its supply of widgets at a set rate for a long term, and business gets that much easier for them.
Well, NHL teams can’t win without goaltending, and RDP is a very good one, potentially a great one. Lock up the supply at a reasonable cost for a long term and it’s one less thing to worry about. Of course widgets can’t get hurt, so if RDP is always out, or diminished as a result of his injury history, it becomes an albatross, but the idea behind the contract is reasonable. Other teams have been doing similar deals with their own key widgets, with a good deal of success. If he’s healthy then RDP will outperform the deal and everyone can finally let it go.
-
Nightfly, if a player is proven I understand locking a guy up but not before and not before he proves he isn’t injury prone.
Does anyone know if the Isles have any clause for injuries in DP’s contract?
If not, then its a BAD idea IMHO.

Awesome information you got here. You truly understand this and I am glad I stumbled this entry by you thanks a bunch.

Lets see if JT can amp his game up in the 3rd period .. Knights are down 4-1 … but Snow’s “trained” eye should be looking at how JT handles himself.
I don’t think putting every game from here on out under a microscope is a healthy way to analyze … as CB put it … a “4 year body of work” tells the whole story.
