WE’RE NOT ALONE. NEWSDAY CALLS OUT KATE FOR HER STIMULUS “CHARADE” AND “FRAUD.”

Read what Newsday thinks of Supervisor Murray’s petition. Maybe it really was just an April Fools’ joke. Comments.

great. Newsday is a very influential paper, and hopefully this will shed some light.

Newsday is always referenced in national reports.

  2. 2 Mike

Yeah, let’s get those shovels ready!! Lots of Elephant @#$% headed our way!

  3. 3 Patrick Flatleaver

CB, before there was a PR program at Hofstra (which I would have JUMPED ON), I majored in journalism there. The best professor I ever had was a former Newsday writer, and Pulitzer Prize winner, Robert Green. VERY respected in the industry.

The fact that Newsday is vocal, makes me happy.

  4. 4 Peter in VS

Hopefully more TOH residents read Newsday than that junk mail Murray sent out.

  5. 5 dlk

Wang and Rechler ought to reprint this and send it out as part of their own mailing.

  6. 6 michael

are we the only ones who feel that kate murray is unfit for the office she holds? i think some “higherups” should come knocking on her door, and kindly ask her to STAY OUT of this until the storm is over.

she keeps making things worse for nassau county and embarrassing those of us who are paying attention. it makes me sick to think our tax dollars pay her salary.

she is in SO over her head she is making george w. bush look like abe lincoln!

  7. 7 JayK

Bob Greene was a journalistic giant. He passed away either last year or the year before. He was a guest lecturer at my journalism school many years ago, because he was good friends with one of the professors.

  8. 8 Macch

    Turning point?

  9. 9 Patrick Flatleaver

#7, Jay.. yes, he was great. He knew the business, and was VERY influential to me. He pulled me aside my senior year, and told me in private to NOT get into journalism (it was 1998). “No money, a dying profession. Get into Public Relations”.

Best professional advise ever given to me.

  10. 10 Mike from Philly

    Haha awesome article…

    Move to Queens!

  11. 11 Mike from CT

Couldn’t the TOH use stimulus money to improve the roads around and the ramps to the Coliseum? This is already part of the LH project and would actually qualify for “stimulus” money.

Oh I forgot, she doesn’t want to actaully help the project.

  12. 12 Goran

hahahaha…..Newsday laying the smack down upon Murray’s phat ***! I would love to see Madame Murray’s retort to this article. To be sure, I will not be holding my breath waiting for that.

  13. 13 Patrick Flatleaver

It’s well known that Long Island near the top of places that young people are moving from.

I’d be interested in finding out where most are moving, and if the Islanders are doing the research, too?

My guess is Lehigh Valley or Western NJ.

  14. 14 Ron from Forest Hills

Great article, and just reafirms that Murray is a scary woman!

  15. 15 Healy

    Patrick,

I am not so sure about now because of the recession but a ton were moving to the southeast like the Carolinas (USA’s newest business hub) and Virginia. I was considering it myself as you can earn a fairly high salary working for a big company while having a much lower cost of living. A friend down there bought a 3 bedroom palace for 150,000…I nealy died of shock :)

  16. 16 Marc from Troy

THAT was outstanding. Short, but to the point - making it more likely that more people will actually take the short time to read it. Bonus points for use of the words “charade” and “fraud”, and especially for the elephant reference.

    Thank you, Newsday.

  17. 17 UIF

The last sentence in that article is some quality writing.

  18. 18 bergie20

uif - yeah not exactly shakesperean writing. pretty crude and unecessary but i agree with the premise of the editorial and i’m glad it was written.the more pressure on murray the better.

  19. 19 Miket

It took me 18 months to add a one bedroom room extension through the TOH.
This will drag on…i can see what happens. Just when the Quebec Nordiques were getting good they moved to Colorado and won a cup, its a different situation but same idea.

  20. 20 Gillies Goring

CB, How big is this editorial in the general scheme of things?

  21. 21 stevedepot

Let’s all take away our Islanders glasses for a second and think rationally about this editorial.
Only reason to this reader for this piece has more to do with politics, period.
Newsday has always been a traditionally LEFT leaning paper and taking a swipe at any Republican is nothing new for this liberal rag of a newspaper. (Glasses back on) Thank god they did this and we need more of it. While I’m a registered Republican I do not like what Kate Murray has been doing and I think it’s imperative for all of us to continue to bombard her office with emails and calls voicing our displeasure with the lack of progress in a cordial manner.

  22. 22 JayK

As far as the political nature of this:

The last time a team left Long Island, it was 1977. The Republican party, down on sitting county exec Ralph Caso, supported Fran Purcell in a primary for the GOP nomination for county executive. The primary was in September; the Nets announced their move to Jersey in June or July.

Purcell ripped Caso up and down for his failure to keep the Nets on LI. He made it a big campaign issue, saying it was evidence of his failure as a leader.

If the Islanders leave Long Island, I trust the Republicans will be consistent in their views and rip Kate Murray for her role in their exit.

  23. 23 John

With the local paper taking a stand… maybe TOH residents will have their eyes opened to know what their local government isn’t doing.

  24. 24 Chris H

I totally agree that Wang and Rechler should make copies of this article and send it out to everyone that Murray just mailed to. Time to take off the gloves boys!

  25. 25 mtrico

#5, I was thinking exactly the same thing.

  26. 26 Chris TMC

I am glad to see this. My question is whether this piece is online only or whether it will be in the printed edition. If it is not in the printed eidition, then far fewer people are going to see it.

  27. 27 admin

It’s in the print edition, TMC…CB

  28. 28 BR

Great to see this piece. Newsday’s editorial page has been very supportive of the Light House project.

  29. 29 mm30

Let’s just vote her out already. I’m a devout republican and I can’t stand her.

  30. 30 Chris TMC

:D I am happy to hear that- thanks, CB!

  31. 31 TIM

off topic a bit but i really hope you and your website are around next season CB you page is very refreshing and your in site is unquestionable i’ll pay if you charge

    THANKS

  32. 32 SIR WILLIAM

Chris, Is that the same Newsday that got caught pumping up it’s circulation numbers? You know, the one where the top managers went to jail and the paper suffered heavy fines? The same one who’s circulation is so low that they had to cut out the Queens edition and have Dolan bucks rescue them from extinction?

    Just curious?………SW

  33. 33 Pat

Let’s hope that Newsday will continue to turn up the gas on this effort. Taking the politics ( Town and Newsday’s leanings) out of this - The Lighthouse would be beneficial to Newsday. More events to cover, more residents who can purchase Newsday subscriptions and services, more subscribers to raise ad rates, and here’s hoping that they act out of their own self-interest a bit and move ahead with a vigilant watch on this project.

  34. 34 Mike

Following is my letter to Kate Murray. I just felt I had to share it with you guys:

Although I don’t live in Hempstead, don’t disregard this email because your decision in this matter affects me and my family as I am in the construction industry.
On such an important issue as the Lighthouse, how come you have been so unaccessable? It has become clear to everyone that such a position is beyond your capabilities. Rather than avoid making a decision, have you considered resigning so someone competant can handle it? It would be refreshing for business people to be able to deal with a professional.
That petition, paid for by taxpayers, is incredible - one sided, incorrect facts, and the naive notion that stimulus money could be spent on entertainment. I can’t imagine how embarassed you must be.
Tomorrow, when you wake up and ask yourself “How can I help the people in the town of Hempstead?”, start with a resignation letter.

    I hope she likes it!

  35. 35 The Real Vukota

The more this goes on the worse Murray looks and that’s a good thing.

  36. 36 mm30

    I’ll Pay Too!

OT-I’m glad these kids are getting great advice to sign with the Leafs?!?!

Let’s see your going to sign a big deal as a college free agent with a rebuilding team in hockeys fishbowl…great situation to develop in!

  37. 37 JayK

Sir William: the circulation padding was done by the business section. It had nothing to do with the editorial writers. Your argument is beyond stupid. It’s like saying that if a certain Nassau County cop was taking money under the table, then all Nassau County cops are guilty.

And their low circulation…have you been paying attention? That’s happening to every newspaper in America.

Stick to the subject. Give us an argument that means something. You are saying, in essence, “Newsday padded its circulation several years ago, therefore its editorial about Kate Murray is wrong. Newsday is having trouble holding on to its readers, like every newspaper in the country, therefore its editorial about Kate Murray is wrong.”

    It’s just idiotic logic.

  38. 38 Pat

    33 - Sir William -

Oops - I forgot the RANGER$ owners - own Newsday. Its in THEIR vested interest to keep the Isles on Long Island - as opposed to Queens. We saw what they did to the Jets. Keeping the Isles afloat - gives the Dolans a chance to have all the people who can’t get a ticket to the Garden a chance to see their beloved Rag$.

I stand on guard - that Newsday has a major conflict of interest as I now see it.

  39. 39 Islander505

    Wow Sir William….
    Is this the same Newsday??
No not really…the people responsible are gone.
That’s like saying “is this the same NYPD” and bringing up Serpico or Eddie Doyle.
    Horrible point Sir William..
    Francessa hand wave for you.

  40. 40 TimQ

Glad to see Newsday getting into the game. As I suggested the other day, this is an issue that has huge ramifications on the region, so they should take a stand on it. Next thing they should do is call for her resignation.

  41. 41 Froggy

All I can say is keep the heat up everybody. Call Kate Murray’s helpline and calmly state your case. They are not going to give you any answers but they are interested in what you have to say.

I called this morning and said that I would like to express my displeasure. To which I was excitedly interrupted - pleasure? No, displeaure I restated. So, I think they are taking this seriously.

Although Kate Murray has a lot of power at the end of the day the citizens of TOH are HER boss. If we put enough pressure on her and the rest of the LI GOP this fight can be won.

  42. 42 JayK

I promise this is my last post…I’m in Asia and going to bed! Long flight back to NY tomorrow.

There’s one big question…have seen no speculation beyond Denenberg…who’s going to run against her?

I question whether it will be Denenberg. I think the Democrats’ hold on that seat is shaky; it’s a tight district. They can’t risk losing it, because if they did, and all other seats held, it would be 10-9 GOP in the legislature. Any incumbent brings strengths to the race that a newcomer can’t match. The Dems might not want to run him.

  43. 43 John

Show me a newspaper that doesn’t pad their circulation numbers and I would be shocked. Circulation numbers includes any freebies they may flood local college/University campuses… or 1ยข deals they may give to an organization to distribute to staff or to have in their lobby’s. Heck, when I go to get my oil change I get the choice of two papers to take with me, and to read while they get the job done.

  44. 44 TONYSAC

SIR WILLIAM: The reason Newsday and ALL newspapers are in trouble with cirrculation, is because of something we call the INTERNET, the WORLD WIDE WEB….Why pay for a newspaper, when you can get all the information online for free?? I still have a subscription to Newsday, I personally rather have the paper in my hands, rather then go online, but it is because of the INTERNET, Newspapers across the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are seeing dramatic decrease in circulation..Thank you for you time SW…

  45. 45 Spinner9

    Healy:

I left LI in the 90’s for grad school in Virginia and stayed. While salaries are lower here the cost of living is even lower. In 1996 I bought a new 4 bedroom house with attached garage on 3.5 acres for under $120,000. I work in Richmond and live about 25 miles outside the city. Of course the life style is different not living in such a metropolitan area in NY but financially, at least, the tradeoffs were worth it for me. (That’s if you don’t count all the money I spend on DirectTV to watch the Islanders, Giants and Mets).

  46. 46 Randy Wood

Sir William - For a true Islanders fan you have to be the most depressing fans that I have seen. You are allowed to have your opinion on the LightHouse Project which we all know is against it as it stands right now but knocking a newspaper that has changes owners, to coach gordon,to DP, to the team not going to move to Queens, to the blue line being the wrong shade of blue. You need to relax take it slow. Hey have a beer and cheer up. “We’re all Islanders” remember.

  47. 47 mrlbem

    Stevedepot (21)

Yes, Newsday is liberal leaning and republican bashing. But they never pass on an opportunity to try to tear down a long standing Long Island institution, such as Charles Wang. The fact that they are pro-Charles Wang on this is a good sign.

  48. 48 beatlebailey

Best editorial ever by newsday. As a season ticke holder of the isles I was disgusted by murray looking for my tax dollars to pay for the coliseum renovation when Wang is willing to put up his own money. Plus she wastes tax dollars on that assinine mailing. I wish I was a TOH resident so I could vote against Murray in November!

  49. 49 Spartiarti - RVC

i just finished giving kate murray a piece of my mind. As a county resident and as and an islander fan.

Wonder if she even gets back to me.

  50. 50 beatlebailey

I just called the TOH Kate Murray help line and spoke with a nice lady who took down my opinion as follows. I was offended that Ms. Murray propsed to use my federal tax dollars to renovate nassau coliseum. I did express my support for the lighthouse project. The lady on the helpline did say that Ms. Murray was not for or against the lighthouse project. I did say that was fine but my call was to express my opinon on her mailing since I was a federal tax payer and not a TOH resident. I did leave my name and address with the office if there is to be any further correspondence. I advise EVERYONE to take a moment and call the office and voice your opinion in a civil and professional manner. If the TOH is flooded with calls they will listen.

  51. 51 b-ri

hit the nail on the head there. GREAT editorial…laughed at the last line too. can’t wait to vote her out :)

  52. 52 sec. 308

She’s not trying to win the war of ideas with silly stunts like this. All she needs to do is run out the clock, then blame Wang for being grabby. Reprehensible as this is, it’s not that amateurish.

  53. 53 Priest

#21.. I agree with what you are saying. I don’t understand why some people have to make everything into a Repubican/Democrat pissing match. It is a single issue that is being discussed, and I think that there are people both for (more) and against (less) from both sides of the aisle. Bringing party politics into an issue like this is just going to turn people off.

*Full disclosure: As a Canadian, I don’t claim to fully understand your political system, but I do follow along a fair bit.

  54. 54 trippstar22

Keep in Mind and CB knows this from being in PR, undecided voters are usually not the brightest. This is who she is targeting, the Newsday article is an editorial not an article, how many of us read the editorials in Newsday. We need a more substantial article, laying out the facts for all to see.

  55. 55 isles316

Can I buy the person that wrote this a beer?

  56. 56 isles316

Vukota is right. Eventually the microscope will be on her and the TOH and everyone in the hockey world will be blaming them if this project does not go through.

  57. 57 Brooks Simpson

Murray’s call for federal money in fact does open the door for comment beyond ToH residents.

Too bad the Newsday sports department can’t take this up in a meaningful way. You can’t continue to say “it’s not just a sports issue” but fail to cover it (or to realize when other coverage appears). One Newsday writer learned of the op-ed by Murray’s legal cover by reading CB’s blog … and admitted it.

We’ll see what happens when another reporter gains access to Wang’s books … but then again, I thought this wasn’t just a sports story. :)

Folks need to keep the pressure on … and on a broad front. That includes telling Newsday it’s time to get serious about discussing the project.

  58. 58 Steve

Newsday is liberal trash. I hope them and the Times go under.

  59. 59 Hockey1919

I spent a moment to send Ms. Murray the following:

As a loyal … voter, former Long Islander living in the greater DC Area, I find it distasteful that we would support the use of the … stimulus package for the Colisuem renovation. Why would we wish to live off of … government handouts instead of looking for the private sector to find the solution?

  60. 60 beatlebailey

#59 Great job. Since she proposed using our federal tax dollars she does make it relevant to non TOH voters. Of course it is much more important for TOH residents to call and write. Politicians exist to win votes. And perception is more important than reality. If she perceives that she will be hurt politically by her stance it will change - simple as that. Who is a viable candidate to run against her who supports the project. And if this person is out there, Mr. Wang please open your checkbook :-)

  61. 61 Very disappointed that possibly my last game at the Mosauleum was such a blowout

In addition to a phone call, where I said essentially the same thing, I sent the below email to Ms. Murray through the TOH website. Feel free to use it (though you may want to correct a couple of typos I missed).

“Instead of wasting your time with fraudulent misrepresentation, why not put that wasted time, effort and money into actually reviewing the Lighthouse environmental assessment and getting the County approved project up and running. You are too busy to do that work, yet you have time to lie to the public and to state that Suozzi could get stimulus money ONLY for the remodeling of the NMVC?!? Sorry, but your logic is failing me here. Would not the project - as a whole and as approved by the county - be more likely to be eligible for stimulus money than the mere remodeling of a sports arena? This is an absurd proposition, and is offends the intelligence of every taxpayer int he county and town. Again, stop wasting your time trying to come up with politically palatable campaigns that are intended to do only one thing, give you the best chance to get reelected. In this trying and troublesome economic times, your very transparent self-interest is the only thing coming through lud and clear at this point.

As a business owner on Hempstead Tpke., who has been working on Hempstead Tpke for over 25 years, I am decided I will use all resources at my disposal - business and commerce organizations, labor unions, networking and business partners, family, friends, etc., etc. to make absolutely certain that Ms. Murray and her self-interest NEVER gets the opportunity to put her interest over the interests of we taxpayers who pay her salary. Enjoy your last moths in office, and see if you cannot turn yourself from a roadblock into an actual public servant.

  62. 62 BSTFAN

Someone should tell Kate that the government tells you what and what you cannot use their money for. This just goes to show you that you do not need a brain to hold public office…

  63. 63 OA PEST

Newsday will be pro-lighthouse till the Queens idea gets push to the front burner. Remember who ownes Newsday now. It aint the boy scouts.

  64. 64 Pete M

Check the Devil for snow shoes cause I think hell just froze over! I am in agreement with Newsday? The newspaper that we in the NYPD used to call the Communist Manifesto? Holy crap!

  65. 65 Chickendirt

I think Murray is pretty much sealed politically. Look, I don’t vote for nor do I consider myself a member of the Democratic vs Republican paradigm. I am a Marxist so my thoughts on this could be considered from outsiders perspective or maybe not.

Take from it what you will.

Murray’s calls for stimulus money for the Colliseum Renovation may as well be considered a death throw in regards to her future in the Republican party. The hard core conservative faithfull probably are not going to stand for that. In a two party system, once you play turkey like that with your base, you are dead in the water.

She’s not going to pull in the non voter, Conservative voter or “moderate” voter doing that.

Murray is pretty much dead in the water politically. Wang could wait out the election is pretty much be assured this project will be approved.

  66. 66 Smokey

Ah yes… what would a pro-Lighthouse post be without a Sir William implied non-sequitur? Certain Newsday officials were convicted of futzing with numbers; therefore, this editorial is suspect.

  67. 67 Drivefor5

I just called the hot line and reemed this poor lady out who’s job it is to answer the phone. Then she said she couldnt talk politics when I brought up how Joe Mandello is pulling the string of this women and how we didnt elect him we elected her….this is a shame, We all need to step up and do whatever is in our power to keep our team here…so when its over we dont have any regrets…

  68. 68 Yes! Islanders

It’s an editorial with no author cited. I wouldn’t assume that it is Newsday’s opinion although it could appear that way.

  69. 69 jay

it’s about time we all prepared to vote Kate “Lights-Out-House” out of office. Enough is enough.

  70. 70 KO21

I actually cut the article out and faxed it to Murrays office…Take that b@#$%!!!:-)

  71. 71 KO21

I noticed there was NO auther because I checked…I wouldve emailed the writer like I always do when I see a writer write something stupid…This time I wanted to agree..I guess whoever it was didnt want to go out a limb, I would be proud if I were the auther…

  72. 72 KO21

I put in a call to Mr Murrays office…The secretary said there will be a public meeting and he will address this…She also mentioned something about the home owners in the area being effected…I’m not sure if she was implying that at this meeting ToH homeowners will be talking…I have a feeling Mr Murray is looking for opposition so she can have some support at this meeting…

  73. 73 KO21

Oh, and she also brought up the excuse that “it is a big endeavor and takes time” and mentioned rebuilding the Coliseum and also continue pursuing the LHP…I told her the story about “Wang saving the team and how he needs to make money and the Coliseum just wont cut it and he deserves to earn a profit, yada yada yada”…I also pleaded with her as a Long Islander to look at the LH website which…

    http://www.lighthouseli.com/

  74. 74 Joe

So how much of the TOH tax payer money did she just waste by mailing 40,000.00 pamplets on using federal money that is not even available? Looks like in the neighborhood of $18k! Great job Kate!

  75. 75 BR

    (68) - Any unsigned editorial means that it is the opinion of the paper’s editorial board and therefore the opinion of the paper. But let’s no confuse opinion pieces with news pieces. Just because the paper has taken an official position in support of the project doesn’t mean we won’t ever see another negative news piece on the LH.

  76. 76 Blizzard

Every time I see a picture of this pig I want to smack her across her face. Sorry that was alittle harsh but the stress is getting to me…….

  77. 77 Yes! Islanders

    (75) Thanks for the info BR. I didn’t realize that. And yes, always be careful in believing what you read, even if it IS supposed to be real news pieces.

  78. 78 KO21

I signed the petition and I want to withdraw now that I raelize its all set up to take away Wangs ability to make a profit…

    Can I withdraw???

  79. 79 KO21

I think it will speak volumes when I call to withdraw due to the misleading lies…They will really look bad…Make them think too

  80. 80 KO21

Heres my withdrawal from the petition:
I am not in support of what you are proposing…The more I think about it and educate myself about the situation, I learned that Charles Wang is losing over 20,000,000 every year for 9 years now…He can’t make a profit with a rebuilt arena…He was promised by politicians who begged him to save the Isles and he did with the promise that the area will be rebuilt…Now 9 years later , $75,000,000 later, he can’t wait any longer and needs to know whether or not he will be able to make this thing work, if he cant get the LH approved then he wont be able to keep the team at the Coliseum even a rebuilt one simply because he has lost so much waiting for this to happen and now he has to recoup his massive losses…He took these losses saving a team for you and me…You are trying to take everything away from Isles fans and you’re a criminal for what you’re trying to do to Wang…

Take my name off of that misleading and bogus letter and shove it you know where…You don’t deserve my support, you’re a disgrace to Long Island and need to resign now…

    Respectfully,

PS. I better not find my name on that list

  81. 81 John R.

#75 BR, I’m curious as to what articles have been written against the LHP. Could you give me a link or two so I can read for myself because as long as this process has been going on I haven’t read one article that says anything remotely bad about it. If there is another point of view out there besides “It will create traffic” I would really love to hear about it.

  82. 82 Quez

I just ran in to Supervisor Kate Murray at my son’s little league opening day. I asked her about the LHP and she gave me the politicians fake smile and assured me that she was doing everything she can to get it renovated. When I told her that we don’t need a renovation, we need the LHP, she blew me off. I told her that you don’t want your legacy to be the one responsible for the Islanders moving to K.C. She then started to walk away, and I told her to not make plans for after Nov. because we’re voting you off the island!

  83. 83 Blackwasser

Quez: She needs that type of pressure, but let’s hope LH proponents keep it respectful.

I think if her position was anti-LH with a principled position and she voiced it unambiguously and fairly to the public, this would be much easier for her. However, this appears to be the start of a shameful and embarrassing spring, summer and fall for Kate.
