The agent for low-risk, high-reward draft pick Kirill Petrov says his client has every intention of joining the New York Islanders “when the time is right.”

Alexander “Sasha” Tyjynch, the Ottawa-based representative for the talented 2008 draft pick, told Point Blank in a phone conversation about Petrov’s plans:

1. Petrov hopes to attend the team’s Prospect Camp this summer: “We are doing everything possible to make it happen,” said Tyjynch, a former Red Army goaltender and the agent for several Russian players, including Nikolai Zherdev. “We’re working on his visa. I’m going to look for the blessing of the KHL and his team, Ak Bars. It’s important to Kirill and me that we go about this properly.

“He has formed a good working relationship with the Islanders. He likes Garth Snow and Ryan Jankowski. They have been good communicating with him and Kirill is excited about playing for the team some day. He sees the Prospect Camp this summer as an important first step. If for some reason he can’t make it to the camp, Kirill really hopes to go to New York this summer and at least meet with the Islanders people.”

2. Petrov’s four-year contract with Ak Bars contract is confirmed:  ”Kirill is currently under contract to AK Bars. I won’t discuss dollars, but I can confirm that he is going into the second year of a four-year deal,” said Tyjynch. “Everyone knew about Kirill’s contract situation. It was not a secret and it’s why such a great player went in the third round.

“Who knows what will happen in the future? Without an agreement between the NHL and the Ice Hockey Federation, my hands are tied. I’m approaching this as one season at a time. For now, Kirill will play at home. I don’t think anyone can predict what will happen one or two years from now.”

3. Petrov wants to be an Islander: “There should not be any misunderstanding about that,” said Tyjnych. “He is determined to come to North America and play for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League. He’s a young player who needs some time to develop. He’s under contract back home and he’s proud to play for AK Bars and be part of the Russian National Teams like at the World Junior Championships.

“When the time is right, he’ll be with the Islanders and he will be ready for the NHL. But I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves. My focus with the Islanders is getting Kirill to the prospect camp this summer. He really wants to be there.”

good news. having him in prospects camp is an important first step to getting him over here at some point. glad that he wants to be an islander someday.

  2. avatar Gloobenberg says:

Very good and promising news! Great read CB! This is exactly what I wanted to hear!

  3. avatar Coach B says:

It appears the Islanders have a relationship with Petrov and his agent. The prospect camp would be a nice start, the goal by all parties suggest Petrov is working his way to play for the Islanders some day.

  4. avatar Michael says:

Chris, you really are a drug for Islander fans. How do you continually get this information? And you do this without pay?

You are crazy for not being the Islanders beat writer. Logan is okay, but you are completely on another level. Every team deserves a Chris Botta.

If I were you, I’d make sure I’d get paid for this stuff. You ALWAYS have stuff that Logan never has. Logan is an amateur compared to your work.

Thanks again for the update/article, appreciate it. As always.

    Newsday Nov 24, 2014
    Chris Botta

John Tavares and Kiril Petrov each with 6 points as the Islanders destroy the Rangers 8-2. Taveras second hat trick of the week, along with Petrov’s 12,13 and 14th of the season make Lundqvist look silly. Coach Mike Sillinger of the Islanders put it best.. “We have a helluva scoring machine here. I cant believe the progress these young kids have made” Add the other 2 goals that last years scoring leader Josh Bailey scored, and the Islanders are looking unbeatable now at 20-2-2.

  6. avatar Gary says:

If we all can be as patient as the team seems to be on Petrov – that would be great. This seems like a diamond in the rough that was just missed by everyone else.

Just hope that it pans out that way…

  7. avatar beatlebailey says:

Great news and another example of why this blog MUST continue. Where else would us isles fanatics get this type of access and information. Great read CB!

  8. avatar IslanderNation says:

    Thanks for the update CB!

  9. avatar Angelos says:

I think it should be “HIGH-risk, high-reward draft pick Kirill Petrov.”

    Great news, CB!

  10. avatar Potvins Cups says:

    CB;
What are the chances that he can “defect” as players did pre-CCCP days? Although not defecting from a country he’d be defecting from the team.

  11. avatar RAmen says:

great news! I think what makes this low risk is that 3rd rounders only make it to the NHL at a 5% clip, so they have lower expectations, and thats all we spent on him…

  12. avatar Chris TMC says:

What a great little interview- thats what I wanna hear!!! :D

I remember Ryan or Garth (forget which one) said last summer/fall in an interview something about how they were going to approach Petrov as if he is a FA that they want to entice to play for the Islanders. It seems like they are doing their parts in making him feel welcome and needed, which is fantastic!

  13. avatar Nick Classic says:

I don’t think Petrov is ready for the NHL yet, so I think all parties are going about this the right way. Let him come to prospects camp to see how much work he needs to do, and then be ready to bring him over here when he’s capable of making a significant contribution to the team.

At very least, his agent is saying all the right things, and I hope the kid puts it all together and fulfills his considerable potential.

  14. avatar Smitty says:

Hey, I’ve had Petrov’s agent give me goaltender lessons when he was playing for the Cape Breton Oilers of the AHL! He and Tretiak signed my stick.

Also, good news that he has the desire to possibly play over here at some point. Its the best one can hope for considering he was a high-risk 3rd rounder.

  15. avatar steve says:

Great news, and he is in an excellent league for development. I look forward to having join the team on the rise.

  16. avatar mtrico says:

Hopefully he will make it to the prospect camp. It would be good to have the opportunity to see him in person.

  17. avatar thepolishprince says:

I don’t know what could be considered high risk with the pick at all. The kid has a very high ceiling and went in the third round. Worst case he stays in Russian and we burned a third rounder on him. No biggie. Encouraging to hear he wants to attend prospect camp this summer. CB do you know if it will be open to the public as in the past?

  18. avatar KevinT123 says:

CB…awesome read. This pick always made me super excited. If he pans out by developing more with age then hes a steal. Imagine if he pans out, plus tavares, okposo, bailey, comeau….oh my oh my wed be stanley cup contenders. If only we had a goalie…

  19. avatar Justin Marques says:

Great news. I have really liked this draft choice since the beginning. Everyone knew the circumstances behind it, especially with him being ranked the No. 2 European skater at the draft, and his contract being the only reason he fell. It was great that we were able to acquire Bailey in the 5-7-9 and still bring in a few extra prospects, especially Petrov and his potential. The kid has great potential, and I hope he can maybe turn into a Jarmoir Jagr style player, but that is asking for a lot. He has the frame and the hands to do so, it just depends on how hard he pushes himself, and his true determination to make it to the NHL. The only regret the Isles should have is passing on Grachev with the pick right before them, but you can never predict what a player like that will do.

  20. avatar timm says:

i am so excited by this news. i was worried that with his injury and his slow return was going to be the end of the buzz on this kid. i still believe that even in 3 years if he comes to long island, it will be one of the best 3rd round picks of all time. he has the skill set to be something really special. it would be nice if something worked out in the islanders favor for once.

  21. avatar kabbage says:

    AWESOME!

  22. avatar michele says:

this is great news to hear..take it slow..and good things will follow..They will be blessed for it in the long run..

  23. avatar Mark P says:

This is the kind of information that makes this site invaluable.
I guess we should be happy this site was not around in the years following the selections of the two Russians and Colliton with 3 second round picks. I believe that was the year O’Sullivan was free falling and we had the ammunition to take the chance.

  24. avatar GilliesKO says:

Great read. Feels like there is a slow burn among Islander fans, building up as the team inches foward. This blog is one of the best out there, regardless of the subject matter. Can’t wait for the draft!

  25. avatar Dawg of the Isle says:

    CB,

I would have to second the setiments of the comments made by #5 above. I found the Mike Sillinger Coaching aspect very interesting. As far as any of the fans that truly follow this team we know that your coverage is always far above that of Mr. Logans.

Thanks for the input Kirill. Keep it coming.

  26. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

I would love sillinger to be with the islanders this year in some capacity. Maybe a faceoff coach.. He was always a good player and good leader and person. Maybe he could have some sort of role with the islanders this year and at some point be an assistant coach with gordon.

  27. avatar EAF says:

to #10 – I don’t think he wants to “defect”. He is comfortable there, at the age of 19 is making tons of money (tax free, and half of them “cash off the books – believe me, I was born there and lived there for 30 years, so I know what I am talking about), besides that he doesn’t speak English.
I also don’t understand why he wants to come in to the camp if he still has 3 more years with AK Bars.

  28. avatar Eye on the island says:

Cb, it would help if you put direct links to your articles in the twitter post

  29. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I am eager to see Petrov at the prospect camp. I’d prefer if he was able to play in N. America now but when the time is right. Really nice having size in guys with him and Joenssu on the way.

  30. avatar Chris TMC says:

EAF (26): I would think that it would be for him to foster a positive relationship with the Islanders- and see what he has gotten himself into lol.

  31. avatar jay dugan says:

good enough for me, I’m happy knowing that it isnt going to be another disaster.

  32. avatar Rangers SUCK says:

OK, it’s like he’s playing for a junior team or minor league team in N America, I have no problem with this. Hope he comes over when his contract expires with AK Bars

  33. avatar BringtheReign says:

that’d be sick to see both him and (hopefully) Tavares at camp. a line drill of Petrov-Tavares – DiBo oh yea

  34. avatar doc says:

Say what you want “Garth Bashers”… but it sounds like Garth Snow is gaining a lot of respect around the NHL and the international hockey scene.

Open dialogue, communication on a regular basis… fair dealings with players etc.

He’s been impressive in how much he’s grown in the job in just 2-3 short “long” years.

And considering that they made on the fly changes during the year regarding their public stance on releasing injury information and other issues… it shows that Garth is doing the best he can to satisfy the fans and still do the best for the organisation.

Keep up the good work CB…. and GARTH!

    Now draft TAVARES!!!

    DOC

  35. honestly, i don’t see this guy walking out on a multiyear contract with his hometown team halfway thru, but hopefully he’ll be nice as hell by the time it’s up!

  36. avatar Blizzard says:

Agreed, I like Garth. But i will hate him if he doesnt draft JT LOL!!!! Petrov is an interesting prospect. I have a feeling he will be added to an up and coming squad and make a significant impact.

  37. avatar Garthblow says:

Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, Petrov, next year…Taylor Hall.

    Oh God

  38. avatar Mike from Bohemia says:

We should not wish for Hall next year because we would have to finish last to get him, unless…..
we trade up (from the #18 to #30 range)to get the #1 from Toronto!

  39. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

Petrov not coming till KHL dissolves. Its ok, better off that he is developing. he not NHL ready. He could be that big suprise when Isles better. Just time for guys like Ness, Hamonic, Niemi and Jonseau, and Trevino start hitting stride..

  40. avatar Swan says:

Great reporting. This is a perfect example of why this is the premier source for Islander news. Great stuff, CB.

Enough with Comeau-talk. He is a 3rd line winger, at best. Shouldn’t be in the same conversation with other Top 6 prospects.

  41. avatar Michael R. says:

What is with the idea that this kid is a high-risk draft pick? He was taken in the 3rd round, not the 1st, he’s under defected player status which means we basically control his rights without end, so it’s not like he can go back into the draft if we don’t sign him and he has a bust-out type of year in Russia.

This looks to be a great situation for everyone involved…it looks like the Islanders drafted a smart, good kid (or at least someone who’s smart enough to have really good representation), who’s saying all the right things. If he makes the team in 3-4 years and is even a 15 goal a year scorer, it was worth taking the chance. ESPECIALLY with all of the other prospects that are still in the pool after all the picks last year.

  42. avatar kevin says:

    awsome news!

  43. avatar JPinVA says:

I think it was a good pick up given the circumstances that afforded it. But to focus on somebody who may never even play in this country is a tad absurd.
Let’s hope they don’t waste a no cost PR bullet and actually push to bring him over here early. In the US he has the potential of becoming an invisible roster abuser like Kvasha.

  44. avatar Honnold says:

Great news. There’s a fantastic highlight reel goal of Petrov’s floating around on youtube. He’s being blanketed by a defender in front of the net and, yet, still manages to get one arm and a stick on the puck in a nifty tip-in.

We could have a Murderer’s Row of offensive weapons if we get this guy and Okposo continues on his march to greatness.

  45. avatar Ted says:

Finally , someone wants to be here !!

  46. avatar Smokey says:

#37 there is no reason to believe Comeau can’t be a second-line winger. He sure looked like it when he was constantly crashing the net, hitting people in the mouth (namely Sean Avery), and making smart passes in the last half of the season.

If he gets put on the third line for whatever reason, he’ll be an awful good third liner… JMHO

  47. avatar KO21 says:

    Great to hear!!!

I can only pray for the LHP so we actually have a reason to be excited…

  48. avatar steveO says:

great read CB our future looks bright
can we get a read on (in my eyes our caption) Billy Geurin he got the pens into the playoffs and then some..
this is what i would like to see in 4 years
    Petrov-Tavares-DiBo
    bergie-baily-ko
    Comeau-franz-tampy/FA
    JJ-Smith-Iggy

i should put Petrov on my retro jersey now with no number

  49. avatar bob l says:

must say, that’s one hell of a follow up to the petrov story from the other day, and much more promising…i do not however think he’s going to be allowed to just walk from ak-bars without complications… BUT, hopefully sharing a little ice time with JT at prospects camp will leave this kid not wanting to leave the states!

  50. avatar moose says:

    Excellent news item CB!

I’ll be sure to monitor camp extra closely.

  51. avatar Ray says:

    (5) That’s a nice little fantasy you got there, but was Kyle injured that night?

  52. avatar gary9-19-22 says:

I have no idea what kind of person this kid. If I 1*4 Garth I would spend every second the kid is here to find out about the person.

Last thing we need is a Kvasha or Yashin.

I want fire in the belly…..

  53. avatar RAmen says:

question – when is Prospect camp being held?

  54. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

I think it’s best that Petrov is allowed to develop with Ak Bars … it gives the Isles time to allow him to develop into an NHL player sans the huge time and money spent on the Isles’ clock … and it makes it especially vital since CB brought to light the 50 player contract limit … We all have to know that the Isles are not going to be knocking on a division title in the next few years anyway … anyone who thinks that Tavares (Hedman) are going to add 40 points to the Isles’ totals in the next year or two are setting themselves up for disappoinment … heck … I expect a bottom 7 finish at best next season… and that is OK as long as the kids improve.

  55. great news, hope he can make it to saskatoon as well.

  56. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

CB- can we get an idea of who the isles should pick with the 2nd 1st rounder and all the 2nd round picks. Also do you think we can expect lots of trades this summer?

  57. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I am liking the job Snow is doing overall and the same for Gordon. My concerns still are 1)realizing a short coming soon enough (not the right type of defense, lack of toughness etc)and 2)protecting their own players (Mottau and numerous other incidents)Gordon did see fit to use toughness more towards the end of the year but they owed Mottau and they owed Boston and even in meaningless games they couldn’t be bothered to take vegenance and give the rest of the league the message they won’t take advantage of the Isles and 3)The medical and training staff. Since they hired the new staff two years ago the Isles have led the NHL is man games lost.

I see better prospects coming in the system, salary cap managed very well (way to use that MBA Garth), the right coach in place, an lots of draft picks.

  58. avatar bCarey says:

Michael (4) – how much cash did CB give you at the last PB Night to write that post?

Can’t say I disagree, though. Kansas City should be psyched about Petrov in 2012-2013.

    I kid, I kid.

  59. avatar BrianAlbany says:

Has anyone one else noticed (Thanks to Mr. Botta ofcourse!) they great job the Isles have done with communicating with all their prospects?

Correct me if I’m off-base a bit, but it seems the Isles really have a good idea where their prospects are at and try hard to make them feel like part of the organization at every level.

  60. avatar Rishel31 says:

We’ll see in a few years what kind of risk/reward draft pick this was. For me I truly believe Garth and the scouting team have done a repectable job so far by drafting prospects who haveshown promise at their current level of play. Yet to be determined is how the coaches at all levels of the organization can develop them into quality pros at the NHL level..but Kyle Okposo looks like he is developing very nicely!

  61. avatar BrianAlbany says:

    CB,

If you happen to read this, I wanted you to know I meant no sarcasm at all in my last post but rather praise and I was truly thankful for all of your updates and hard work thus “Thanks to Mr. Botta”. I am a little worried because that post is in moderation for some reason. While I read the blog religiously (probably about 5-6 times per day at times) I don’t post too often and don’t want to get off on the wrong foot. Thanks again.

  62. avatar Jeff says:

Team is being built nicely. Just hope they are not in another town when the kids develop and become successful. That is one of my worst fears.

  63. avatar Islesnut says:

Thanks for the information, great post. I really hope he comes to the Prospect Camp in July.

  64. avatar Glenn says:

It’s great to hear Petrov wants to be an Islander. He’s still very raw, I just hope he gets enough ice time in the KHL to continue his development. Let’s hope he maskes it to the Island this summer!

  65. avatar tom says:

ISles better take TAvares…ISlanders have way too many 3rd line players. The only 3 forwards i like are Okposo…Bailey and BErgenheim……
