Not unheard of when teammates bang heads.

  2. avatar kevin fitz says:

haha I love it! Would love to see the video of what happened. I am sure this is no big deal. Two competitive guys playing their hearts out for their respective countries is all I am sure.

  3. avatar UIF says:

Probably just hockey. Happens all the time at all levels in the middle of a game even amongst friends.

  4. avatar Lorne says:

Very normal when teammates get into fights with each other.

  5. avatar Peter says:

Pretty funny, would have been a real story if it was:

    Penalty 31:43 33:43 USA 5 min. 9 OKPOSO K – Fighting
    Penalty 31:43 33:43 SUI 5 min. 7 STREIT M – Fighting

  6. avatar RAmen says:

just two guys playing to win.

  7. avatar Staten Islander says:

WAIT! KO got into a fight? I don’t remember him having one during the season.

  8. avatar rb says:

i love it…shows a competitive spirit from both players

mike bossy tells the story about how billy smith came out of the net during practice one day and wanted to fight him because bossy was shooting ovechkin-type rockets right under the cross-bar on him

  9. avatar Jim From St James says:

C’mon guys, the best pick-up games are the one where you get to flatten a good buddy into the fence, or even better knock your brother on his A**.

  10. avatar Brian G says:

    breaking news

  11. avatar UIF says:

I’d like to hear their explanations for what went down, though. It’d be a good story.

  12. avatar Dan says:

Maybe they wanted to catch up in the penalty box.

  13. avatar Justin Marques says:

Heres the truth..it happened like this:

Okposo: Mark, we all Snow is taking Tavares, I can’t do everything alone offensively.
Streit: You?! How about me…if the rest of our defense tried maybe I could play less than 25 minutes per game! Plus I had more points than you!
Okposo: Excuse me, It’s gonna be Tavares man, or I’m leaving the Island!
    Streit: Hedman!
    Okposo: Tavares!
    Streit: Hedman!
    Punch, punch, punch…

    That’s how it went down…

  14. avatar RRL says:

    That’s funny.

It reminds me of when DiPietro and Aaron Asham got into it during a practice. Interestingly, DP played really well the game after it happened.

  15. avatar JPinVA says:

Streit probably had Okposo’s playstation privelages revoked at the hotel… and WHAT REALLY STANDS OUT IS… what is [arguably] 1/3 of the islander’s future even doing in the World Championships.
If one of those guys got hurt because of the other it would be one cold locker room in October.
Jim from St. James… the best pick up games do not lead to 30 years of therapy, or three afternoons in family court.
    well… that’s just my opinion.

  16. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

I am curious to see how it really went down.

  17. avatar 7th Woman says:

This was in the “Morning Coffee” email today from the Islanders “Okposo and Streit got into a shoving match in the second period and both received matching minor penalties. “It was pretty strange,” said Islanders Head Coach Scott Gordon, who is serving as an assistant for Team USA. “They both got minor penalties for it, but that was it.”

hey… when you’re playing for your country, you play for keeps.

  18. avatar StevieL says:

Country trumps team loyalties every time!!

  19. avatar Giaco says:

    Something small as per CBS…

The U.S. had a goal ruled out on video review before Swiss captain Mark Streit and U.S. forward Kyle Okposo were called for roughing. Streit, the New York Islanders defenseman, was also penalized for fighting against Russia.

  20. avatar the bomber says:

how is the us losing to the swiss… just awful…

  21. avatar RichM says:

Maybe next year we can be talking Islanders playoff hockey in May.

  22. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Maybe they were arguing over which of them gets to be Captain of the Isles next year… ;)

  23. avatar Handlanger says:

RELAX guys – I saw it live in TV – it was nothing, would not have been whistled in the NHL, it was just some soft handling from the referees. :-) It was really nothing we would call roughing… and they shook hands and spoke to each other very friendly after the game. They’re both guys who desperately want to win games – that’s it. And it’s good for our future. :-)

  24. avatar jay dugan says:

im sure the Sutters have had their in game scuffles…..

  25. avatar doc says:

Non-story unless one of them got hurt of course.

  26. avatar Brian says:

I seem to remember Garth Snow fighting Oleg Kvasha at practice a few times….anyone remember that?

  27. avatar beatlebailey says:

islander luck is they both break their hands punching each other doh!

  28. avatar Chris TMC says:

Ha- thanks for letting us know, Handlanger (23). Ill trust you on this lol. :D

  29. avatar Jim From St James says:

JPinVA I had a game like that last friday, My brother & I are in our 30′s, no therapy, just some Advil & a beer or two.

  30. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Ya, I do remember those stories Brian. A shame that Kvasha could only be troubled to fight his teammates. I bet you Snow was sick of seeing Kvasha give no effort all the time.

I think Okposo and Comeau need to work on their fighting this summer. Not that you want them doing it all the time but they both end up playing a chippy game and at some point they will have to throw hands.

    Old Time Hockey

  32. avatar Hanson #17 says:

    toe blake!

  33. avatar KO21 says:

When I first heard this I thought it was a joke and then I thought it can’t be good but they are competing against each other and it gets emotional sometimes…Its not personal, its in the heat of the moment….Heck I remember having scuffles with my best buddies while playing roller hockey against each other…It’s really means NOTHING, I’m sure….

  34. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

LMAO!!! Looks like someone put some itching powder in someone’s jock during the regular season … Payback’s a …. ;-)

  35. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

If I had a nickel for every time things got a bit heated between myself and a teammate / former teammate when playing for different teams I’d buy the Isles … (See CB’s thread about putting our money where our mouth is about buying the Isles) … Heck … even my brother and I have beaten the hay out of each other in open hockey with a little extra in the body checks … it’s the spirit of competition … and sometimes the people you are closest to you are a lil more competitive with…. quite frankley … I love it … I’m sure they had a good laugh about it too. I can’t wait for the World Championships to end so the both of them can rest up and relax before they have to work on getting inshape for October.

  36. avatar therain93 -- terrier fan says:

ooooh, what if there’s bad blood…. Looks like Streit can get packaged up for the number 2 pick now…get JT and Hedman.

    I jest, I jest….but it would be cool ( ‘ ;

  37. avatar The PolishPrince says:

In the words of Officer Barbrady “Move along you bunch of lookie-loos. Nothing to see here”

  38. avatar geduffer says:

People, we don’t EVER want to see either KO or Streit fighting. Even if they don’t get hurt, why lose them for the 5 minutes. This is why a team hires an enforcer, wait a minute…

  39. avatar chip saunders says:

    What’s the big deal,their competitors.

  40. avatar Robby D says:

Hope Kyle earns himself a 4th line spot on Team USA for Olympics.
