DEAN CHYNOWETH LEAVES WHL POST
Headed to Islanders as assistant coach
4:00 pm - We first had him at 35-1, then mentioned him again two weeks ago as a strong candidate to work with defensemen as an Islanders assistant coach. Now Keen’s Korner reports that Dean Chynoweth has resigned as GM and head coach of Swift Current of the WHL. Dean is a former NYI first round pick of Bill Torrey’s in 1987 whose career was limited to 241 NHL games because of serious injuries. Now 40, he has been a head coach in the Western League for the last decade. He’s wanted a chance back in the NHL. Now confirmed by Greg Logan. Good man, good hire. Comment on this story only here, draft in next thread.

Well if that’s the case then, Welcome back Deano!
good to see his tpe of experience coming to this position.
welcome back dean!
This is great news! He’s had a very good career as a coach/GM, he has the proper kind of attitude as how the game should be played. Very excited about this! As a bonus he’ll be a valuable resource to Snow and Ryan having coached for or against many available players in the draft.
Great, Another victim of Rick Tocchet!
Here come the rumors that “Dean was bought in to work with Hedman”
Welcome back Dean! Great to see them hire a teacher.
Wow, that would be great! I really hope that this is going down the way its looking.
(6) I know you were kinda joking, but heavens let’s hope not. Deano didn’t exactly play Hedman’s kind of game. The NYI were hiring a D assistant anyway…CB
I believe he wore the #3 did he not? I always got confused between Chynoweth and Chyzowski! Lol
HAHA vukota
CB- I know, it was a joke, but you know how insecure most of this fanbase is, lol
Another benefit of hiring a coach like Dean is he’ll be in Gordon’s ear talking to him about the physical aspects of hockey (i.e. Mottau does crap like that you kill him).

Yes, Chynoweth wore #3 and Chyzowski wore #9
Chynoweth was one of those defenseman who when healthy was a decent defensive defenseman. Was not very mistake prone and played a physical game. Just could not stay healthy. Same as with Pilon. Both played that same tough game but the injuries hurt them. I think he would be a welcome addition to the Islanders coaching staff if he were to come here.
Seems like a good hire. Should we expect Chabot to stay?
I met him and loved his game (many didn’t - not flashy) and he was my choice for coach over Gorton once Sutter declined it. He’s got a bright future and would actually LIKE to see, if worst comes to worst, a revisiting of Mike Milbury - MINUS Milbury of course. He’s a good up and coming hockey mind.
(maybe the Pens will grab him from us?)
I’m a firm believer in bringing back your own. Hope it happens. When I was a teenager I used to wait after games an get autographs, Dean was always very friendly and a nice guy to the fans…
Well now we have our Assistant Coach and Enforcer!!!
Loved Dean Chynoweth as a player. Saw him down in Nashville a number years ago at the NHL draft and was a real great guy.
Career cut short due to dick tocchet sticking his thumb into Dean’s eye.
Good hire.
On a slightly related note, Chris Schwarz was hired by the Senators.
35-1? you need to rethink how to book odds CB
Just great…Another former Islander to land a job with the old club! Was Pat Price busy or something?
Why hire someone with a pro career total of -24 in the +/- column to work with defensemen? Not encouraging at all.
#13, i believe Chynoweth also wore 2, and for a brief time Chyzowski wore 89.
Hey Chris, what happend to that Chyzowski guy? I’d like to get Mr. Torrey’s explanation on that one, what a bomb.
Last post - because Dean coaches far better and is an up and coming NHL figure who has experience as coach and GM, much like Sutter. FWIW, Arbour was a good defenseman but not Bobby Orr. Sather….Babcock….BOWMAN?
Bowman never made it out of the minors and retired due to a head injury. Great players like Trottier or Gretzky coach better than never been players? The word going around is that he’s a solid choice and will be worth hiring if he’s not already.
How you play and how you coach are two seperate thoughts, folks. Dean is worth watching and we hopefully have him long term after Sparky Gorton gets canned.
nice pick up - I would rather hire a younger guy than one of the many retreads that were out there…Chris - do you think there will be any other additions to the coaching staff??
who is goalie coach going forward? Sudsie still floating around? Dunham?
I’m not familiar with Chynoweth’s credentials to step into the role so I can’t get excited or disappointed with nothing to base it on. I don’t recall him having much impact during his NHL career (other than the constant injuries that plagued him throughout, including the Tocchet incident and I swear I remember him being out for an extended period because of an ingrown toenail - which I can attest truly sucks but I had never heard such an excuse before or since … they should’ve lied and said it was something else more threatening).
Vukota - very funny post about hiring a coach to develop our #1 pick VH!
If it’s the case, GREAT MOVE!
Wasn’t a great player, but most cerebral minds weren’t. As an example, and this is not a comparisson, but Al Arbour is not known for his playing career. Welcome back, Dean.
This is hardly an example of the team scraping the bottom of the barrel to hire someone, anyone, who once wore the colors. The guy has coached for 11 years, most of that as a head coach (WHL). He has a great reputation and I’m sure will do a fine job for our team.
Very welcome news, if this proves accurate. Dean never cheated us with his effort and has received much praise for his professional work in juniors. Hopefully Gordon had input on the hiring; I’m always uncomfortable (and head coaches are especially so) when GMs hire assistant coaches on their own.
Isleshostage, good call. I completely forgot that Trottier was even a head coach. For whatever reason, great players don’t translate to being great behind the bench.
When the islanders had their AHL team in Albany it was when deono, the chyzer and chevaldayoff were all playing. I’m glad to see one of them back! Always liked deano
and I believe chevaldayoff wore number 3. Atleast with the CD Isles he did!
God forbid they hire someone with NHL experience.
#35, totally agree, the Islanders always go against the grain, thats why they will pick Duchene #1,bank on it
I don’t know if anyone posted this yet CB … but you’re correct. Deaner is going to be an assistant. TSN has it listed under their Headlines: Report Cynoweth leaves WHL’s Broncos for gig with Isles. That said CB … our local Unsung Hero … That’s you CB … could be the source of their “reports say”
Now to follow up by reading all these articles.
…. it took me a year to pronounce Dean Chynoweth’s name right back in the 80s … I better start practicing again.
good stuff. welcome back to Long Island, Dean!
Chynoweth wore 3, not Cheveldayoff or however the hell you spell his name.
The good news about having someone like Deaner on the staff isn’t just that he’ll help the defensemen… a defense coach also helps forwards with their defensive game … The Isles could use that on both ends of the ice.
Even though Tochett’s egregious act on Dean is the biggest thing I can remember about Dean … mostly because how much it angered me … I can still remember Deaner being a reliable shut down tough defender.
35 & 36
Not many established coaches are going to want a position with a rebuilding team like the Islanders. Also, not for nothing…. but two of the Islanders recent “no name” hires have won cups. It’s not always about experience, and Dean Chynoweth has a good rep as a solid coach and teacher. He was a hard worker here, and one tough SOB to boot.
Good move by Deano.
If the Isles do well, some Isles fans will say it’s because of Deano’s input to our defensive game.
If they don’t, someone will say it’s because of Gorton and should be replaced by Deano.
#41, Laviolette wasn’t a no name when Carolina hired him, Carolina let him have his growing pains with another team.I will wait on Blysma, 18 or so NHL regular season games with Crosby, Malkin, Gonchar, Orpik, Fluery, Kunitz, and a team went to the finals last year. Time will tell
7:00 PM: Greg Logan has just confirmed it on his Newsday blog. Chynoweth will be the newest member of the Isles coaching staff.
Love this move! It’s about time we get a guy to coach the D. Garth, draft Tavares!
could we get a bio story on Chynoweth
Great move. Slowly the foundation of the team is going together.
Hey Vukota, no dig at you, but our fanbase has to stop being so negative. Should be a good hire, but who knows until we see results. Sorry CB if i ruffle feathers here, but I hate the bad attitude on most fans who post here. It makes a guy wonder why he is a fan when all you see in posts in bashing of the teams decisions. I will always be an islanders fan, til the day i die, and will be glad that i am also.
Thanks for doing such a great job on your blog, letting someone like me have an opinion.
Wow, I’ve actually heard of Mr. Chynoweth. 40 is a good age to get a second (or third or whatever) chance. Welcome (back) to Long Island!
Big deal, another rookie coach who was an average dman at best. But hey…he is a nice guy and that is all that matter to so many Islanders fans. Lets all by best buddies, it does not matter how much they suck.
I like this pick as a coach. Brings someone back from an era in Islander history that is often fogot about! NICE and well deserved!!!
Everyone has missed the point, Dean Chynoweth is being brought in to work the Lighthouse Project. As Keen’s reported, as GM he was responsible for “a newly renovated arena,(and) a brand new dressing room and training facility” ;).
