ISLANDERS PICK CALVIN de HAAN AT 12
Move up from 26 to 16 to 12 for a bit of a reach
8:54: With the 12th overall pick, the Islanders go with a head-turner and select Calvin de Haan. Not John Moore (surprised), not Jordan Schroeder (not surprised) or Zack Kassian or any numbers of prospects widely considered as higher first-rounders. A bit of a stunner. The move from 16 to 12 was not expensive. The complete move to take de Haan all the way from 26 was.
Hey, we said they’d move for somebody that was really high on their board that isn’t on everyone else’s. In the end, the night is about Tavares.
Last year, the Islanders passed on some top prospects to stockpile draft picks and take Josh Bailey at 9. Tonight, they gave a big chunk back to take de Haan.
What that means: a couple of scouts at the Islanders table were infatuated with de Haan. We’ll know in 2-3 years if they were right.
8:50 pm - Islanders make deal with Minnesota to move to 12, giving up 16, 77 and 182. Great value move.
8:12 pm - Why make the deal already? One expert theorized to me, maybe they will try to move up even more, I mean Moore.
7:58 pm - Islanders trade up from 26 to 16. In a deal with Columbus, they give up 26, 37, 62 and 92. They get back 16 and 72. A steep price if they don’t get a John Moore or Zack Kassian-calibre prospect. Surprising they do it without knowing who is left at 16. As predicted, they hold on to tomorrow’s first pick - the 31st overall.

Any chance they package the 16 to go after, say, Vinny LeCavalier?
WOwo , very STEEP, i dunno bout that
Only 1 2nd round pick
The 62nd pick is a 3rd. They’ll still have their own pick in the 2nd.
No, it’s a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th for a better 1st and a lower 4th.
okay with that, they must have a few players in mind and know at least one of them will be available..this is the first time what I want to the isles to do they are actually doing….get that big wing or d-man, or scorer get’em garth
I like the trade. We have a bunch of picks anyway.
I am good with the trade, Isles have had enough mid rounders, time to go for it like the Jets with Sanchez.
I think it’s awesome. We win on this one.
It’s not that steep. It’s swapping 1st’s, swapping 3rds, and giving a 2nd and a 4th to move up 10 positions in the first round. It’s a great move. Not steep at all.
Why is this a steep price they gave up a 1, 2, 3, and 4 for a 1(10 spots up) and a better three then they gave up. Maybe garth even trades up again
It was a 2nd and 4th to move up 10 spots
quality is beter than quantity…
yes, im surprised we didnt wait till we were closer to the 16th to see what is left
Its a third, 77 overall.
Now that we have JT all is good. This is better too! Hopefully TODAY is the beginning of good days for the NY ISLES! The turning point! HOPE!
Objectively, could be seen as a steep price, but it makes a lot of sense from an Islanders’ point of view.
Isles significantly improve their chances of getting another impact player in the first round and still have a high 2nd round pick.
ladies and genetelman, the best player we should target is finisher scott glennie and not a 3rd liner in kassian, id be happy with moore ctoo
Isles mean business. Quality over quantity. It says alot about what they got last year and how they feel about the growth. Stay tuned. I am watting kids off my legs like mosquitos at this point. Why could.nt the draft start after bedtime for a 3 year old?
I like the big move; it means they are committed to getting to starting players in the lineup come the opener in a deep draft. I will wait to celebrate this move until I see the rest. Burke looked like he was going to cry. All talk and no action. Way to Garth!!!!
its a steep price but we should get someone good. The flyers gave up way too much for Pronger by the way.
Pricey. Hope its worth it. Don’t care too too much right this second ’cause Ta-va-Res Ta-va-Res We got John Ta-va-res, Ta-va-Res Ta-va Res De Dum De Dee La la la….
I want Kassian, Glennie, or Schroader
Good trade…. They have to get quality this draft. There is a big difference between 16 and 26 in my opinion. The difference between 2nd and 3rd round picks are not that big IMO. We shall see!
TAVARES!!!!!!!!
Unless this is part of another deal, I don’t think I like it. Too much to pay just to move up. Obviously this is a case where we won’t know the ultimate result for probably 5 years, but according to Scott Cullens article on TSN.ca, there is almost no difference between 16 and 26, and (interestingly) 26th has a higher %age of great players (which, conversely, must mean it has a higher % of flops too).
Don’t we still have 2nds?
Surprised they would do the pick trade so far before the pick, as they aren’t sure if their top target (or two) will be there at 16.
On the NFL draft chart, they just gave up 1,646 points in picks (at nos. 26, 37, 62, 92) for 1,205 points in value (picks 16 and 77).
Seems too steep to me. Losing that no. 62 pick seems excessive.
Should we now trade the 16th overall and the first overall in the second round for Vincent Lecavalier?
Maybe Garth needed 16 to move up even higher?
No Lecalaier - too much money for too long.
trade for Heatley. less money, less time, more goals.
LOVE IT!!! We would have traded the 37th overall anyway to move up just 4-6 spots. Now we throw in a 4th to get to 16. AWESOME!! Go Garth…good stuff!!
I’d love to see them move up and get Jared Cowen.
John Moore on D. Hmm, interesting. He will be a big kid (is already 6′2) and is apparently a great skater.
Danny Heatly?
Good trade. I don’t think that was too much to give up at all. If we can land moore I will be thrilled.
You gotta think, at the time the trade was made, Snow must have at a list of (in his opinion) can’t miss guys, and whoever would be left at that point is the guy. The pick would have cost more IMHO if they waited to pull the trigger.
MattNC - good thing this isn’t the NFL
Jim - me too.
Have to agree with others, this could be a great trade, but it all depends who we get and how they develop.
Lets hope Garth comes away with the steal of the draft with the trade.
Do we still have 2 second rd picks?
Got to be Kassian!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great day!
kassian
that trade really doesnt bother me.
16 is higher than wat CB thought they were gonna get to.
they still have 2 2nds
and a 3rd.
Depending on who we get its a good trade.
they did move up 10 spots
Cheers from the west coast! This is a great night. Hopefully Kassian falls to us.
Jordan Schroeder going at 16
It doesn’t matter because as CB and many other experts have already stated anyone after pick 10 is most likely playing somewhere else for 2 to 3 years and anything can happen in that time. You can aquire more picks for next years draft in that time or find some hidden gems in your own system. We gave up 2 picks to move up in the first round and I have to tell you, it really doesn’t matter. Unless of course they’re able to pick someone up that CB mentioned, then it will have been a stroke of genius.
Good move, Snow is doing great. We need quality.
They only have one second left
i believe we still have first pick tomarrow(31)in 2nd round
Great deal. When is the last time that a second rounder made the Isles? After the middle of the first round, players rarely make the NHL.
the heck with Moore, if we jump up again, get Jordan Schroeder… if no Schroeder, get Chris Kreider or Louis Leblanc
We still have 31 and 56 in the 2nd round, correct?
We do need a d-man more than anything. Will Tavares step in at wing? Tavares-Bailey-Okposo as our first line?
i like it
Correct, dman.
31 and 56 yes
So someone correct me if I’m wrong - we still have 2 of the 2nd round picks and no 3rd? That makes the drafting a goalie question a little more interesting, as I think many thought the goalie would likely come in round three.
The Islanders have the 31st (1st in the 2nd round) and the 56th (26th in the 2nd) round.
no way magnus will still be there, right?
what time does the second round of the draft start tomorrow?
i think so
Don’t like the move…. maybe Columbus said “Take it now, it won’t be there later”.
In my mind’s eye, none of Kassian, Kreider, Leblanc or Holland are better than the two guys that could have been had with 26 and 37.
Kassian is prolly the most overrated player in round 1.
See MSP and Ellis not being there at 16.
As such, here’s hoping one of Kulikov, Rundblad, Moore or Schroeder is at 16. They are about the only guys left who’d be worth the move taken.
check out espn.com
we still have a 3rd
Did we start the trend of org’s kids being at the draft table? Looks like there is one at every table they’ve shown thus far…
after looking at espn.com…that’s why you pick Tavares…
This is a great trade. 16th still have 31. Quality my boys and girls. You can only sign so many players.
Jesus, the feed from the draft party has been lost for awhile. What is going on there???
I want a stud d-man with the pick at 16! Someone who can skate, but is physical. Seems like Moore is that guy, so I hope he is still around for us.
isles are to trade up again
I’m hoping for Rundblad or Ellis, with the outside shot of Schroeder dropping (much less likely). Any of those three and I’d be ecstatic with the 16th pick.
Simon Despres (D) 6-4 200 will be ours at #16…
Isles still have 2 2nd rounders (31 and 56) and 2 3rd rounders (77 from Columbus, and 91).
the heck with it, if Schroeder is still there at 13, trade that late second rounder (56?) with the 16th and sevure Schroeder….
Tavares and Schroeder… game, set, and match!!
Plus we still would have the 31st
jordan schroeder. all kinds of speed on tavares’ wing for a decade
Despres underachieved as a junior. No guarantee he makes it as a pro. Hope it is not Despres (or Kassian).
lets let garth do the picking… you can only sign so many picks anyway, whats the sense of having so many you can’t sign?
Bummer. I loved Ellis.
hey scott #27 are u nuts!! we gotta give up a lot more than that
Neulion???!!! (KHAN!!!)
Who is it that the Isles are coveting with this pick? Obviously Kassian, but he won’t be there…
Islanders are getting this pick
We’re trading again!!
Isles moving up again…
Isles making a deal for 12 pick….talking
CB looks like he’s going to be right again.
WTF
the next deal is coming now
John Moore it is. CB you are a genius.
Kassian…?
mhmm
OMG!
TRADE ALERT
MOVING UP TO 12
Mad Garth strikes again!
I really want John Moore,He has drawn comparisons to Paul Coffey.
Kassian or Moore or Schroder
Who is that blonde???
i think it’s john moore
56 and 77 to move to 12
looks like jankowski is talkin to minnesota.
#12!!!
Like I said in post #28
Get #16 to move up
WOW! WE GAVE UP ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
Wow…great deal.
even better we keep 56
not bad - still have 2 second rounders
wow what a steal
LOVE IT - #77 and 102? HELL YES
MIN TRADES 12 FOR 16,77,182
Love McGuire’s comments - that is a GREAT trade - they gave up NOT much, right
???
Dear God I’m actually proud of Garth
Here we go again…Moore?
wowwwww
#12 for #16 #77 and #100 somthing
Good trade!!
Garth Snow-best GM in the NHL tonight.
I love this second trade. Overall it still seems a bit much, but I’ll reserve judgement for now.
WHOOO????
Oh god. Who the hell is Calvin Dehan?
Shocking. Not positive.
WOW
Calvin DeWhoooo?
are you kidding me!!!!!!!
Kulikov?
WHO?
WTF?
We traded up twice to get a guy who we could have gotten originally at 26?
I take back every bad word that I ever said about Snow. Great moves.
He also knew all along.
Snow had said he was pretty sure Tavares would be the choice immediately after the Islanders won the lottery, and that nothing between then and now swayed him.
“We obviously liked John right from the beginning,” Snow told NHL.com. “We followed through with the process that we’ve been executing the last three years. It just validated our belief that John was the right player for our organization.”
Interesting…
over Schroeder, Kulikov and Kassian??
WHY DID THEY NEED TO TRADE UP FOR HIM???
Did they have to trade up for that?
juts when I was happy with Garth he brings us back to reality
‘
Why not Kassian?
why?
Why trade down for the 23rd ranked player?
Ugh. I take it back, Garth. You suck again.
you’re telling me we couldn’t have gotten him at 16?
he would have been there at 16.. better yet, he would have been there at 26… same ole Islanders
Wow, no need to trade up to 12for DeHaan. On a positive note, Isles brass seen reading Pointblank at the draft table on TV right before the pick..
same ole Islanders
I take that back. Anyone with a brain wanted Tavares, what he did now was plain stupid.
what the $&!*?, here we go again
im gonna have to trust Garth on this one.
Don’t know much about this kid.
Schroeder. Moore. Kulikov. Kassian.
AND WE TAKE THIS NOBODY? GAH.
HAHA. Looking at mynhldraft.com it has DeHaan going to us at 26.
LOL.
Relax guys. The Vs./TSN guys are raving about de Haan.
I would have taken 5 defensemen over him…
Kulikov, Moore, Depries, Rundblad, and Olsen
horrible!
would have rather seen someone more NHL ready at #12. But we still have #31 I guess….
1 step forward, 2 steps back. unreal. another small defensemen. i can only hope another team really wanted him and the isles have a deal in place to trade him…? UGh.
I would have taken 5 defensemen over him…
Kulikov, Moore, Depries, Rundblad, and Olsen
horrible!
Glad we gave up 77 and 100 for a guy we couldv’e had at 16
I agree with frank nyc.. going to have to trust the isles scouts over arm-chair scouts on this pick…
nice to be right for a change
First of all, how do we know that he would have been available at 16? Perhaps GS received intel that he would have been gone. This kid has a huge upside and immediately upgrades our D prospects.
Like the pick alot but prob could have gotten him later on. snowy must of thought that another team was hot for him
he doesn’t IMMEDIATELY upgrade our D prospects.
Maybe in three or four years. The guy is skinny and seems a LONG way away.
since the Isles got JT, I am happy, the rest will play itself out, not worried about this one. It has been said that only JT and Hedman are ready this year, let’s give the scouts a break after they did the right thing with JT.
Im proud of my correct prediction but we shouldn’t have lost 5 draft picks on this guy. May be garth wanted the NVMC to clear up earlier.
With de Haan the Isles made the 2 worst trades of the day, no question.
why oh why would they trade up to get him?!? Look good for a minute then do your best milberry impression.
Intl Scouting service 36
we should have waited as this guy would have been there at 16—they were loving the isles and taking speed and then a collective sigh when this kid was announced–TOTALLY a reach here at 12 geeze
After making sure they do what it takes to sign Streit last year…and no doing whatever it takes to take this kid…I have faith this kid will be good. Isles know their d men it seems…must have a lot of confidence in the kid.
P.S. Besides he played with JT in Oshawa.
You have to trust the scouts. This kid obviously has tremendous upside. They must have known someone else wanted him. The Islanders also keep the 31st pick. I trust Janakowski
Oh my, that was a surprise. To go all the way to 12 to get De Haan? Incidentally, he’s a former teammate of John Tavares picking up quite a few assists on Tavares goals.
That said, I can’t believe Jordan Schroeder was still there to be picked. Schroeder was the guy I wanted on the Islanders before the big losing streak in mid-winter.
First, after they announced the trade and the camera panned over to the Isles table, did anyone else notice that one of the Isles team was looking at Islespointblank on their laptop??? AWESOME! Anyway, I thought they were going Kassian, kinda dissapointed that we didn’t get him but we’ll have to assume they saw something that they liked enough to make the move up for him.
I dont know much about him either, so im not blasting the pick, but i am confused. Only bc it looks like we could have easily had him at 16. I hope the Isles had word that Florida, Buffalo, or Anaheim were targeting this kid. But they must really like this kid to give up 4 picks to move up for him
Isles love these smurf d men
Hahahahahahaha what the hell!?!?
Could’ve stayed at 26 for this guy! Bad move, only worth it if we co24blocked a competitor!!
If deHaan makes Team Canada for the U18 tourney, we’ll all be very happy..This could be an good pick down the road…
Do we move up again for a late 1st rounder?
Garth drafted DeHaan because he played with JT at Oshwa before JT got traded. That has to be one of the main reasons why he reached here.
should have taken Kassian… otherwise they should have stayed at 16
I can’t believe it was DeHaan. I’m still stunned. At least that move is overshadowed by the big right one.
NHL Central Scouting’s Chris Edwards: “Calvin shows a lot of patience and poise for a young defenseman. He has high-end puck skill and passing ability. He has a very good shot, hard and accurate, and a very good ability to get the puck through traffic to the net. He sees the ice very well and moves the puck through traffic. His skating is excellent, mobility, agility and speed. His biggest asset is his hockey sense. He makes very few mistakes.”
i don’t ge this..i would have picked moore…bob mckenzie says we could have gotten de haan later…i like de haan but i beleieved snow missed somethign here: kulikov, moore, schroder are all better, he could have gotten de haan at 1. this is intriguing to me. bad move
Jesus Christ, only Islanders fans could find something to complain about on the day we drafted Tavares. The kid got high marks for his hockey sense, so you have to trust them here. I called Kulikov, but it wasn’t my call. Deal with it.
how do you pass on Schroeder.. unreal
Any chance Chicken Parm Jr is there at #31?
GATH DOES NOT WAT TO GIVE UP 31… it potentiall worth more than a low 1st rounder
no one say a word we got tavares now let them reach alittle they earned it. who knows this kid could be great
why move up unless they think he was going 13-15? opefully that will be the story otherwise I just had a JETS draft moment…:-(
IDIOTS! Damn it Snow. You did everything right for once except who you picked. MORON. You had him. You had Zach Kassian the player the Isles needed almost as much as Tavares. A guy who would have countered Pronger, Lucic and everyone else but you once again had to go with a small puck mover. You just can’t stop yourself with these small puck movers. this one is a long way off from NHL ready too and probably would have been there at 16. This is crap. You had Kassian. You fool. I was feeling so great all the way up until the announced the pick. Kassian might play in the NHL this year. De Haan 2-3 at the earliest. Who’s gonna protect Tavares, Okposo and all the others? Kassian would have changed the team attitude. You got Tavares right but blew the 2nd pick. THIS SUCKS!
Its not like we gave up NHL players to move up. We gave up picks that won’t be here for a few years for someone their scouts really liked. Taking a guy they really like 10 picks to high is not such an awful mistake
I just watchewd snow’s face when he said calvin and he gave someone in the crowd a smirk - like “that’s right I went off the board”
Give him the benefit of the doubt he looks like he knows something
Disapointing pick, I wanted Kassian who has been compared to lucic. Dehaan would have been there at 16 or even later
after reading the TSN bio on de Haan im not as upset when i was when the pick was made. gotta think theyre really high on him and they thought someone else was gonna grab him
Guys this is the NHL Draft not the NFL Draft. With the exception of the top 2 or 3 players, the rest will be back in Juniors or college next season, so the fact that de Haan isnt “NHL ready” now isnt an issue.
MY gripe with this is that we could’ve gotten him at 16 and maybe even perhaps 28. If we dealt up to 12 it shouldve been for Kassian or Moore.
Why did he take this guy so high???Everyones saying he was ranked 26
I had to rewind it and look again - you’re right, that guy on the laptop does have IPB on there.
woohoo!!
They must have really wanted De haan and they must have had some inside knowledge that he would be gone by 16. I really don’t know enough about any of the players at this part of the draft to say if it was bad or good. but hey…. WE HAVE TAVARES!!!!!!
They could have De Haan at 26. Carter Ashton, John Moore, Zack Kassiank.
After selecting Tavares Garth and the Isles have earned the benefit of the doubt, I’m optimistic about this pick as a result. On surface seems like a reach but if they felt this strongly about the player I credit them for going after him.
Haha! Exactly what I was thinking, Nick. And for those of you lamenting Olsen, he will likely be available at 31. Oh, and we already have Kassian, his name it Matt Martin.
the isles didn’t pick ZACK KASSIAN cause TSN compares him to todd bertuzzi
I don’t get it.
i will trust the scouts on this one…. probably could have been had later but if you want your man you get your man…. and from what little ive been able to find this kid has been shining for his team and stepped up to make it possible for the team to trade away a blue chip rangers prospect… made a rangers prospect trade-bait? i like him already.
i like de haan a lot and i have no problem with picking him. he played with tavares and had good chemistry with him. he must have been a LOT more popular with gm’s in the 12-15 range than we thought. snow did not give up much to get to 12.
So, how about my boy Justin Debenedetto? Unite him and Tavares? Whaddya say?
Before people blow a gasket. We got the safe play in Tavares. It’s OK to take a risk.
The kid we picked at 12 is supposed to have HUGE upside. Word is there is no limit to where this kid can take his game. Mentally he is NHL ready but his body isn’t.
Typical Jankowski pick so I would’t judge too prematurely here.
that report sells me. lets get a dman who apparently isnt anywhere near ready for nhl yet he still almost had a point a game. so is this guy gonna be leetch when he is ready? sounds awesome!!!
that jets moment i just had was when the jets took ken obrien instead of dan marino..poor schlub jets fan quote from that draft day “the jets must know something that everyone else doesn’t” not quite
played with Tavaras? JT will be a 5 year veteran before we see De Whoooo
How quickly you guys lose faith. An interesting pick, sure, but instead of stepping back and looking at it, isles management are idiots again.
you know what?
The Islanders are a better team than they were yesterday.
they have a #1 center in John Tavares.
and now we have supposedly a very good D prospect.
Im happy overall.
Is it possible the Isles trade back into the first round later moving up from #31???
Kassian is a beast, good grief…I thought the Isles were taking him for sure - don’t understand it.
terrible waste of picks to move up TWICE to pick someone who would be there at 16
shades of Milbury
No way in heck that giving up 26, 37, 62, 92 and 108 for de Haan was wise “asset” management.
No way!
Three things:
A) Would anyone have taken him between 13 and 16?
B) Is he truly gonna be better than Kulikov, Moore or Rundblad?
C) For cryin’ out loud, he may have been there at 26? Couldn’t they have just sent 26 and 56 for maybe spot 19 or 20 and take him?
Really, really shaking my head. I can’t figure it out.
We needed Kassian to protect JT and KO.
Enough with the small offensive defense man.
JT was a no brainer, Snow is still an awful GM.
BR completely agree with u… we have kassian in matt martin… agree we culdve gotten the guy later, but hey we got our man in john tavares… no need to be upset… GREAT JOB GARTH!!
Did anybody else see Garth talking to one of the other tables when they panned..(talking about Fla pick)
177 - Kassian will get smeared if he plays in the NHL this year. Settle down - everyone outside the top 2 picks are projects and are (should be) at least a year away.
I really thought it was going to be Kassian or Schroeder. Hung up on my friend whose team picked up Pronger tonight. Very depressing.
remember JT?
hes done trading now guys
Schroeder = Parise
De Haan = Neilsen
I should also state for the record that I’ve never seen any of these guys play and have no idea what I’m talking about, but I’m sure I know more than the guys who get paid to do this for a living.
: )
#201 you are 100% right. We gave up 5 picks for this kid. Hope he turns into an olympian
LOL you guys are amazing, we get the guy you have moaned and groned about for months
You said you would leave this team if they didnt pick JT, GUESS WHAT they picked him.
Now you jump off the boat again cuz of this? Chill out lol
Rob, De Haan is a defenseman.
After taking Tavares…I’m not doubting Snow’s ability…and moving up twice to take this kid…
Schroeder-Tavares
Okposo-Bailey…
those would have been some nice pieces in place…
Schroeder has the speed Tavares lacks
Well that leaves a bad taste in your mouth… C’mon Garth
someone needed to take the phone away from garth..he was a drunken sailor with these picks..just give em away!
I’m completely fine with this pick. This reminds me of when Calgary in 1995 drafted Derek Morris in the mid teens of the first found when he was slated in the sixties of the third round. He will take some time to develop, but I think he will be a good defensemen in the end. Though my preference was for Ferraro…
so what everyone is saying we picked De Haan to be Tavaras’ roomate and friend
Actually we already have a Kassian, who is only half a season away in Joensuu. 6′ 4″ can skate (better than Kassian), can score, and get gritty.
High-end defensive prospects we did NOT have until De Haan.
Garth could not resist putting his stamp on things. He is out to prove he is the smartest guy in the room.
great point I really think this pick was more to give us organizational depth at D which is what we lack.
We have some good young prospects up front that can move up
My good friend was drafted years ago by the Rangers, he then got hurt and drank too much and never made it( he regrets it)These kids are 18, JT will be great and the rest time will tell. It’s a great night for us Isles fans.(unless my girlfriend is so tired of the Isles and is not back from the mall soon, I am hungry)
With the 12th overall pick, the Islanders go with a surprise and select Calvin de Haan.
Hey, we said they’d move for somebody on that was really high on their board that isn’t on everyone else’s.
We’ll know in 2-3 years if they were right.
this is shocking. Kassian would have been my pick. Isles need size upfront in the worst way.
DeHaan would have been there at 16. heck he might have even been there at 26.
Snow had to fill the disappoint the fans quota.
Good job, Garth. As we said, pick Tavares and then have your fun. De Haas is your project, pick another at #31.
TAVARES!
The Islander could have had another player with great potential, but they went with someone they felt wasn’t gonna be available at 16.
A top 30 prospect most likely will still be available when we pick first tomorrow, so we shouldn’t really complain.
If we got Tavares and went home it still would have been a great draft. Let’s see how this kid works out.
Very True 197. I’m thrilled with Garth. We got JT and it sounds like we added a very good Dman. I trust the Isles scouts more than Isles fans. It’s a great day to be an Isles fans.
only the isles could take a day that looked to be perfect and cast some doubt on it…why do our GM’s for the past 10 years need to prove how “smart” they are…i want someone to call garth out on this..tell us which team between 13-15 was taking this kid. please explain yourself Garth???
Calvin de Haan was going to be taken before 16, which is why the Islanders moved up. He’s the next Mike Green. Stop bashing Garth. This kid was the OHL Rookie of the Year, and he’s going to be a dynamic offensive d defenseman. Ness and de Haan, I’m absolutely salivating right now.
It looks like the Islanders are already JT’s team. DeHaan was a teammate with him in Oshawa. He did win OHL’s rookie of the year. He’s a bit of a project, but can turn into something special. I really wanted Kassian, although I wouldn’t be shocked if Kassian becomes a 3rd line grinder.
No real problems with the pick. If SnowJanks really loved DeHaan, you do what you can to get him. You don’t wait and hope that he falls to you at 26. Kudos to Snow.
I’m trusting Garth. if they felt he was gonna go from 13-15 then so be it. it wasn’t that steep to go from 16 to 12
It’s really hit or miss with everyone after the 10th pick in my opinion. There’s really no reason to freak out over it. I’m going to trust the scouts. He has some really good things written about him. The person they picked was not going to be on the team next year anyway.

I think CB siad it best, a bit of a stunner. However obviously they were thinking D here. And apparently, they had this kid rated very high. Dont know much about him, however in 2 to 3 years we might know. Have to trust the scouts on this one. But really, we have John Tavares abd akk is good.
we knew who we wanted, someone between 12 and 16 was going to take him, good for Garth, Ryan and staff to trust in the scouts and go with their gut. HAHA the fans are never happy..wait three years. De Haan had more points than Kulikov, Kulikov is signed in the KHL and we have Matt Martin and FREE AGENCY to protect KO and JT and JB and FN…gimme a break, go back to your shanties
Moving up that much makes no sense for that player! Just ask yourself Garth …”WHY”? Come on
#216 I love Joensuu but he can’t fight nor check like Kassian, not even close. We needed a guy like that badly. Botta and Logan both assured us at different times that the Isles understood now they didn’t need anymore small puck movers yet…..here we are. Is the defense really gonna be De Haan, Katic, Kohn, Ness, Streit, Hillen, Harmonic and Neimi one day? I doubt Katic and Kohn will ever pan out anyway but this is really dispointing.
Ya’ll might remember how nasty things get between us and Buf (unless Fritz and Wrecker is there) if not the Isles get the worst of it. Get used to that some more. Who’s gonna protect all our talent from the nastiest/dirtiest guy in the NHL Pronger when they won’t even stand up to Mottau? Hunter? De Haan?
After watching GS and the scouting staff last year, and seeing the pick of Tavares, I trust what they are doing. I love what they are building both on the island and in the system.
Relax, we will know if he is a reach in a couple of years. Maybe they also checked with JT and he raved about him. Yes we know that he was rated lower and we might have had him at 16 or even 26 but who knows.
NHL Central Scouting’s
“Calvin shows a lot of patience and poise for a young defenseman.
So let him put some bulk on and continue to grow. Again key word just like Bailey is his hockey sense. As John Moore continues to drop for some reason.
I’m usually one to criticize a strange Garth move, but I gotta believe someone else was going to take the guy they wanted, so that’s why they moved up. That said, I’m wondering why they didn’t take a top-10 rated guy like Kulikov if they wanted a d-man and moved to a place where he was still available at 12.
It’s from RLL, but here is a quote from an Ottawa Citizen piece on de Haan (he’s a local boy) from a few days ago:
“This kid makes the smoothest, most intelligent passes in all three zones we’ve seen all year,” wrote a scout in Red Line Report. “If you don’t believe us, think about the level of talent he plays with in Oshawa versus the level of talent Ryan Ellis plays with in Windsor. Then think about how many points de Haan might rack up if he played in Windsor.”
I’ve seen this kid play, and when he gets a bit bigger, we will have ourselves one hell of a dman. TSN compare him to Thomas Kabrle….and after seeing him play….I agree.
Once again we have to believe that our backup goalie GM is smarter than all the scouts who rank this guy much lower. Why must we always have broken down ex-players as our GM’s? Hire back 1000 year old Bill Torrey now.
you guys think he done now with trades?? i do
Well, we’ll know who we should have picked when we see who the Devils take. I bet it’ll be Ferraro’s kid.
I dont get it, why move up to 12th to take this guy.
Buffalo jumped all over Kassian.
Sather looks like a duchene with that cigar.
Again, can someone tell me who the blonde is at our draft table?
Wow!! I’m extatic about Tavares. Awfully shocked about De Haan considering that most mock drafts had him going to them at 26. So unless they saw someone else picking him between 12 and 16 or even 16 and 26 this makes 0 sense to me. They made a great pick and followed it with a wtf pick.
Adding more small defensive prospects to the system? De Haan, Ness, Hamonic, and Katic. Where is the size?
well if the draft continues to get a little crazy with some unexpected picks, the guy we pick first tomorrow may be a guy who was projected 10-20… ill take it… however i wouldnt be surprised if it is a goalie
So we still have two 2nd round picks and two 3rd round picks - right?
Mickey, what if the Isles scouts ARE smarter than everyone else, though? It’s certainly possible. The field missed Zetterberg and Datsyuk andand so forth. From my perspective, I’d guess they could’ve had de Haan at 16 or perhaps even 26, but I don’t get paid for this stuff. Nobody except Tavares and Hedman should make an impact in the NHL next year, and by the time we know whether this pick was wise or not, we’ll have found something else to complain about.
Besides, like Chris says, tonight is about Tavares. I hope that even Isles fans can suppress their biological need to get angry at their team for at least a little while. As soon as Tavares has a bad game, you can all come back here and say you wish we had taken Duchene all along.
Surely, Snow and Jankowski saw something they liked in this defenseman while they were scouting Tavares. I trust them. We have Tavares, everything else is gravy now.
from reading around de Haan is a big up and comer. Played really well in the OHL last especially after they lost Tavares
the heck with it, we traded half our picks… might as well trade 31, 56 and anything else we have for 18 and get Schroeder..LOL
The Isles still have 2 second-rounders (31, 56) and 1 third-rounder (91).
Wow, Snow gave up picks of equal point value (using the NFL chart) to the 5th-6th overall selection in order to get de Haan.
I very rarely make aggressive posts, but a lot of teams must be stupid based on all of the name dropping done by people here. Moore and Schroeder still on the board.
if he is such a big secret.wouldn’t he still be around later
If Garth was going to mess up a first round pick, would you rather he have done it with the first overall pick or the second overall? Be upset, but remember, it could have been worse. He could have had selected de Haan with the first overall pick. We’d all have been really upset then!
Where the heck is that Doc guy that always post on here? I’m depressed now and need him to write me a prescription. Had Snow taken Tavares and then Kassian it would have been the best night in Isles history in a long time now…….not so much.
Are most of the picks that we stockpiled now gone with these two trades to move up?
Just one third rounder, not two.
And de Haan isn’t “5 years away.” He is 2 to 3 years away. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see him in the NHL in the 2010-2011 season.
de Haan is one of 9 defensemen already invited to the Canadian Junior camp in August. His upside is unlimited. I didn’t really understadn the pick either, but as long as we got Tavares, I’m good. No, I’m REALLY good.
And no, we keep the #31 pick, because they get to stew on it over night.
we all are happy snow did what 99% of the other gm’s, my grandmother, mailman and cab driver would have done and taken tavares at 1 but he should be grilled on this one 5 picks for a kid projected to go in the mid 20’s??…
Defin. a WTF move at pick 12. But oh well as #258 says everything is gravy now.
@#248 Best comment of the night!
yup
maybe there is a reason these guys are still on the board….isles great draft thanks. dehaan will be fine in time, how many of these guys are ready to play next year anyway….so sick of the bashing snow took the guy everyone wanted so relax ya big babies
we also have pick #72 from Columbus
vomit canadiens take another frenchie
People shouldn’t overreact. The only significant piece the Islanders gave away was the 2nd rounder. The later picks are just filler if it means you lose out on a player you really want by keeping all those picks. They can’t draft a huge number of players every year with late rounders and then hope they get lucky. Besides, space can become an issue. You’ve got to go for quality and get what you really want, and it’s the Islanders staff that judges that. There is no measurable qualitative difference between the #12 and #22 prospects on a Central Scouting list, it’s just the order they finished with and how they happened to balance the strengths and weaknesses of the kids. The Islanders know what they are looking for and they vet these kids very closely.
The key here is that the Islanders scouts and staff must have rated this kid very highly to move up to get him. Judge in five years time, not now.
we do lack size up front. but the night is about JT.
most of the players tsn picked in their mock drafts between 10-20 have not been picked.
Maybe there is a reason moore and shroeder are still on the board. everyone needs to calm down.
How about Heatley for the 31 pick & next years second & Comeau ?
here’s the problem with saying that the isles are smarter than everyone else, They have not done a single thing to suggest that they are. Citing Datysuk and Zetterburg makes no sense because in any system other than Detroit’s they might not have developed into the outstanding players they are now (plus the isles did not draft them). The islanders are not smarter than everyone else. They should have just kept the 16th honestly we don’t need another small puck moving D man unless he turns into a mike green like some think he will. I don’t
i guess snow took dehaan because he knew there was going to be run on small, skilled d-man like leddy, rundbland, and dehaan…surprised moore and scroeder are still on the board
6′, 170 lbs? I’m still wondering where the size on this team will come from. Hard to call it a bad night after the JT pick (the building was electric!), but this DeHaan pick is a real head scratcher.
#270, “vomit, Minn takes another american. vomit”
Do you trust Ken Morrow or not? He has to have had some input on De Haan. Look at some of the players we expected to be drafted sooner and are still on the board (see Schroeder). Keeping the 31 pick we still have a shot at Morin if we need an additional sniper. There is also the possibility that there was word on the draft floor that he was targeted by another team as well.
I find it hilarious that so many people oh this site speak like they are professional scouts. No of you have seen any oh these guys play including tavares yet everyone acts like they know everything about these prospects. Reading the TSN ranking doesn’t make you an expert. It is widely thought that after the 10th pick, it is a crapshoot.
Anyone notice Garth give someone in the crowd a look after announcing the defensemen pick. I think he jumped in front of someone.
We could have traded 26 and 37 for 21 and took Moore. Holy crapola!!!!!
But then we would have Moore not DeHaan.
5 years from now we will know the answer.
The fact that more moved down a lot makes me think that this wasn’t a bad move.
Let me set the tone starting with Rob#141. So you would have taken 5 named players ahead of DeHaan? Your evaluation is based on??? Just how many times have you seen any of them play? Look! This kid may have been a reach at #12,but he also could have climbed up the charts in many other GM’S minds. It is reasonable to consider Snow had an incling that there were a team or two who would have picked this kid anywhere between 13-15. Sit tight!! This isn’t necessarily about a strict order of names you saw in The Hockey News. There really wasn’t much difference in evaluation comments between Moore or DeHaan. Many describe this kid as small. He just turned 18 and is 6′0″ 173. It is a good bet he will have put on another 25-30 lbs before he skates one minute for the Isles. I have to believe Isles scouts know more about “The OHL Rookie Dman of the Year” than anyone here. Any young defenseman who collects 55 assists in a season is pretty aware of what he is doing on the ice. If he becomes a Doug Crossman or Tom Kurvers type,no one here will complain! I have a hunch he may have more skills. Sit tight and enjoy the rest of the draft!
Simon Despres still available - 6′4″ defenseman. I might wish this guy falls to 31 for us.
Here is deHaan’s profile:
Initially, de Haan’s numbers dropped off following the John Tavares trade to the London Knights, and some presumed that his points total for the first half of the season were inflated. But he shook these presumptions over the last month of the season, registering 17 points over his final 13 games. He really seems to have a strong grasp of the offensive side of the game. De Haan has fantastic puck control and is one of the top puck moving defenseman in the draft. He skates well, and isn’t a liability in his own end, as he led the 9th place Oshawa Generals with a +3 rating this season.
He does, however, lack power on his shot, and does not have the natural edge or aggression you’d like from a defenseman, both possibly as a result of his wiry physique. He has grown taller over the last year, and will spend the next season or two filling out his frame. He draws NHL comparisons to Niklas Kronwall.
Brian Burke is doing his best Howard Beale impression right now. LOL.
Actually, Moore will prolly need more than 5 years to be an established NHLer.
De Haan needs to physically mature, but he’s considered a PP monster. Had 55 assists in this, his first OHL season.
Great moves to move up to #12. Screwed it up in one shot though by reaching big time. De Haan is a good prospect but there were better prospects available. And regardless of position or need, Garth should have taken the best available. Personally, I wouldn’t have minded him taking one of the other top forwards (We could have had Schroeder at 16!) with that pick. I didn’t even think De Haan was the best available defenseman at that point. Oh well, prove me wrong Garth, please!
No other defensive prospect in this year’s draft had as many assists in his rookie, major junior year. Name a better defensive prospect, before DeHaan got picked.
Marc Staal in his OHL rookie season got 13 assists in his all-star year. DeHaan got 55.
The “glass is always half full” with us Isles fans… I’m happy we got our man…
I’m proud to be an Isles fan and you should too.
Chicken Parm Jr. slips to Round 2, we still have pick #31, are u thinkin what i’m thinkin, I hope Snowy’s thikin whati’m thinkin !
I’m still intoxicated with the Tavares pick, so I cant be too upset with de Haan. However, from numerous mock drafts I have seen, it seems this guy might have been had at 26, and almost certainly at 16. I thought they would go for Moore, Kulikov or Kassian, guys that probably wouldn’t be around at 16 (although Moore went to 21 which wasnt expected). It doesnt make sense.
Ahhh, what the heck, we got JT…..the universe is back in sync.
I can’t believe so many people are more content complaining about moving up for de Haan than praising Snow for doing the right thing and taking Tavares.
If you haven’t seen the plan yet, it looks pretty simple. Put 6 players on the ice that can move the puck and hope that nobody kills you.
They’ll have some guys mature along with the undersized D (Ness, Katic, de Haan) like Martin and Recker. Hopefully they’ll be able to add blueline size and grit in the next two years. they get Sutton back in October, and Witt will be recharged. Neither will be going anywhere until the trade deadline.
In two or three years this thing should all come along to be what Buffalo failed with two years ago. Let’s hope not, because it should be some exciting hockey.
We still have tomorrow… and July 1. These are exciting times for Isle fans!
can they sign Fritz just to play against Philly?
You can’t judge this draft on Tavares he was the easy pick ranked number one by everyone, its every pick afterward that you have to base Jankowski and Snow on. Now the problem as I see it is you had 11 chances to draft quality players and now you’ve decreased that by 4 quality picks. De Haan may indeed turn into a fine player but could you have taken any one of these players: Moore, Kulikov, Schroeder, Despres and still have held onto all those picks? Since Despres went 30th I would say: “Yes”. Lets pray day 2 plays out better this franchise definitely needs more talent… Ferraro, Shore, Budish, O’Reilly, Morin, and maybe good value later on Alexander Avtsyn from Russia Dynamo 50 Goal scorer.
I don’t know if this means anything but de Haan had more assists than either Tavares or Duchene.
The problem with reaching for De Haan is that we gave up potential players to get him by giving up extra picks. Let’s just hope he is THAT good. I still don’t like the move, but it’s too early to know who is right.
I hope Garth goes with some more skill with the 31st pick. I’d like to see another potential sniper by getting Jeremy Morin. If not, some good skill players with potential are Panik, Tartar, or Rajala. If Snow wants more two-way players then he will probably go with Shore or Ferraro. I say go for the home run hit though! Another interesting prospect is Zach Budish. That boy is a monster. He is basically a linebacker on skates. So basically we should get a couple of decent players out of the 2nd round. I wonder when he’ll go for a goalie. I like the big Swede and Fin goalies but I’d wait until the third round or at least the later 2nd rounder to possibly grab one. The goalies are far from a sure bet in this draft.
Bit of a reach is right … I saw that Isles moved up and I liked de Haan … but figured him for around 26th … something to sleep on.
Erik Haula is another skilled European player who is on the small side. I think we’ve seen enough small players with high skill levels succeed to know that it can be done, and quite successfully I might add. I think a few teams will kick themselves for letting Schroeder get passed them. I may kick Snow.
hmmm…is it just me or does De Haan sound alittle bit like a player we used to have…went by the name of Chris Campoli…who we traded for the 26th pick that we traded for the 16th then the 12th…hmmm
Hey if 293 people bought season tickets, that would be a great start to the NYI comeback (293 people commented before me)
Everyone beyond Tavares is 2-3 years away and trades happen every year for developmental players in and below the AHL level. So this is a good move and no need to worry about anything.
Though I wanted Kulikov or Schroeder, deHaan is still a great prospect..Red Line Report rated a Top 12 for “Wayne Gretzky Trophy” for Most Natural Hockey Sense….1- Tavares…2 Hedman….3 DeHaan…4 Ellis…5 Cowen…6 Schroeder..8 Kulikov..11 Kane….Red Line Report also said about deHaan: BRIEF SUMMARY: “Best pure passing, puck moving ‘D’ in the Draft.”….Heres the full Profile..”Super Smooth finesse d-man is a great puck mover & makes the smoothest, most intelligent passes in all three zones we’ve seen all year. Hits mates in stride, always on the tape, w/ crisp outlets & long cross-ice feeds. Has touch to make short saucers off both sides of the blade. Shows tremendous poise w/ the puck & patience to let plays develop- always makes the right decisions. Takes charge of situations. High hockey IQ, ralely mistakes a mistake.
Smooth, fluid stride. Shifty laterally w/ great balance. Doesn’t wow you w/ coast to coast rushes, but generates by head-manning the puck quickly on the break & transitioning from defense to offense in a heartbeat. Must bulk up his wiry frame in order to become more effective in his own end, though he plays a competitive style. If he had 20 more pounds of muscle on his frame, would be challenging for top 10 overall……..PROJECTION: Top 3 Defenseman who runs a strong PP….Style Compares to: Tomas Kaberle
I would have packaged the 16th, 31st and one other pick and try to get to #10 and take Paajarvi-Svensson. DeHaan was a big time reach who would have definitely been around at 16. Kind of puzzled
Strange how everyone’s talking about Bouwmeester but no one is talking about Komisarek wouldn’t it be a great move to bring Komisarek back to the Island to help shutdown the Ovechkins, Malkins, Crosby’s etc of the east… Tavares one day, Komisarek another that would really kick the rebuilding process off!!
Snow and the scouts did great picking up Mark Streit so I will trust their judgement on De Haan since he reads very similar to Streit. They seem to know what they’re doing in that dept.
Still some good prospects on the board including a #7 ranked Swedish Left Wing with some great size, speed, hits, and scores. Maybe he’s our guy at #31. Also, all the top goalies are available with none coming off the board yet. Jeremy Morin and Ferraro also there.
We get another good prospect at #31 and maybe we move up from #56 and snag another before the next drop off in quality. I know i’m happy.
reasons why we drafted de Haan: the scouts are IN LOVE with him. he played with J-Tav. Someone else wanted him. Janakowski isnt stupid. They knew they could get him 26. he got rookie of they year. he skated better than duchene. hes legit, but has a couple years to go…. but ouch, pass on moore. REALLY!!!
McKeens Hockey Player Profile:: Failing to make Oshawa as a 16 yr old rookie, de Haan improved by leaps & bounds before joining the Generals at 17. He was one of Canada’s top d-man at the World U-18’s where our Director of scouting, Max Giese, loved de Haans offensive instincts when leading the rush….”He’s poised w/ ice water running through his veins,” Giese said. “de Haan exudes patience in possession w/ the ability to survey the ice proficiently & his deceptive skill-set enables him to smoothly evade the forecheck before moving the puck sharply.”…de Haan possesses elite-level hockey sense when reading his options & is a valuable PP Qb as his assist total would indicate. His shot isn’t overpowering but is very accurate, constantly low & on the net producing chances for his team. de Haans production dropped off slightly after his team traded John Tavares but resumed shortly thereafter…His poise w/ the puck is something few players his age possess, as his patience enables him to escape pressure w/out losing control of the puck. de Haan remains unfazed by the physical aspect & will take a hit to make a play. His strong positioning & ability to read the play also makes him a valuable defensive player….”He would be a wise selection in the latter half of the first round for a team that plays a puck-possession style.” Giese concluded.
CB they could have had de Haan at 16! I am not complaining I got my guy 2nite! (I’m sorry! WE GOT OUR GUY 2nite!)When i saw them go down to 12 I thought for sure they were going with schroeder, kulikov or Kassian! I just don’t understand why you would move down for somebody that was projected in the 20’s! It’s Christmas in June Islanders Fans!
I’ll take de Haan feeding those sweet outlet passes to Tavares and Okposo all day baby!
have faith fellas. size and strength upfront can be purchased on july 1. goalscoring can be purchased on july 1. i dont think we are buying goalscoring, but size can be gained. first pick tomorrow will be interesting. a few guys dropped. the russian DM dropped a bit, seems a lot of people passed on the russian, with the KHL and such. the #12 pick is 18 years old, 6 ft tall and has skills as per posting #305. they will muscle him up. we have muscle on the blueline thats short on skill. now we might have both in 3 years.
please don’t take a goalie at 31. our power play suddenly looks pretty good.
I was at the NVMC and ran into Billy Jaffe on the floor and asked him about the pick for de Haan. He said the Islanders were in love with him because of the way he aced their psychological testing, the fact that he played with Tavares, and that he is so ’smooth’. I guess time will tell.
DeHaan won the rookie of the year for th Generals and also won their top dman, not the whole O’s r.o.y.
DeHaan is a former teammate of Tavares at Oshawa and one of Tavares best friends. He happens to be pretty good too. His knock is his weight. Im sure he will be up to 210 or 215 in a few years when he is ready to step on the NVMC ice. He also made a 1st round Ranger draft pick expendable! LOL. The kid has a lot of talent.
I am a little confused about deHaan at 12 but I would not have been as surprised at 16. A lot of projections had him as late as 29 but many had him off the board at 26. Most of us know NOTHING but what we erad about any of these guys. Look at the Red Wings, year in, year out they draft great players from everywhere in the draft. We can only hope that the presently Islanders staff can bring us back to the Torrey years. Those Stanley Cups were almost completely homegrown, only small tweaks each year to put them over the top. Granted union rules have changed, salary caps are here, etc, but you really need a strong base to build on.
Frankly, now that Snow did the right things by the fans in picking up JT, I think his ability to protect this choice right to the podium whilst all sorts of pundits and “insiders” bit hard on Duchene will make him a much tougher and more credible negotiator with other GMs and agents.
Alot of high projections have fallen, as have there been some shooting stars. LA lauded Luc Robitaille, picked at 172 for being the best LW of all time. You just never know where they come from. The Isles can start the day off tomorrow with Ferraro (who is already taller than his dad) or move onto any number of players that I hope the scounting staff sees as an integral part of our future.
Tavares great move
De Haan - what were they thinking they gave up so much to get a guy who was ranked 20 to 30 range…they need so much and its not like this guy is going to be stepping in next year…it doesn’t make sense…all year it has been said these were the picks that were going to build the organization from this deep draft…
16,26,37,62,77,92,182 = 12
these are the canidates for #31:
Ferraro, Morin, O’Reilly, Budish, Elliott
or Trade#31 for a pick & nhl player
or multiple picks in this draft
I still think the Islanders contridicted them self with this backward trade - ???
Some people need to calm down about the size issue. He is a 17 year old KID. He was 5′8 a year ago and he is no 6′0. He will gain mass as he gets older. I just read in an interview…
HE DOESN’T SHAVE YET!!!
So give him time to grow. Minus size he already seems to have most of the other intangibles to become a solid NHL dman.
Hey Sumo Goalie! You are making definitive evaluations about various kids. You like the Swedish Goalie(You probably are referring to the Fin or Swiss kid)? Did you ever see him or Kulikov,or Budish etc play? These ratings aren’t set in stone. Unless you are a World traveler or subscribe to Junior Hockey TV packages,I assume your opinions are merely based on heresay. Were you also amongst many that emphatically stated DeHaan would have been available at either #26 or 16? Just how do you know that? Did you ever consider the possibility that a few other GM’S picking between 13-15 thought along the same lines as Snow and might have grabbed him? This kid has just as much chance to develop or fail as Moore. I find it absolutely stupid to define these kids now and annoying when opinions are made of kids who most of us never even heard of 3 months ago,let alone see them play. It will be 3 to 4 years before this entire draft is evaluated.
oh…one more thing…why have I not heard a thing from Scotty Go Go Gordon?
I was just out on a 17 hour mission over here in Iraq and all I could think about the whole time was who my beloved Islanders were going to take at #1. It was such a pleasant surprise to see Tavares was the pick. Give it time for De Haan, who knows how he is really going to pan out. Have faith in Garth, it might have seemed like a lot to give up for a guy projected later on in the draft, but maybe Garth and Janks are onto something that we as arm chair gm;s don’t know about. Who knows who they might sign on July 1st. I can’t was to come home in the fall and go see this soon-to-be amazing team.
PS The icing on the cake for the night was the Yankee’s blowout of the Mutts, Mets.
I can’t believe the ‘experts’ on this site complaining how Snow blew it with De Haan. He obviously was higher on their than other scouting organizations and also at least one other teams, that is why they traded from 16 to 12. I think it shows how highly they regard this guy, who came on close to the end of the season and at the U-18s. Once Tavares and Del Zotto (Generals #1 dman) were traded he eventually took over a rebuilding team. I think the Islanders might have landed a gem.
I’d like to seem them grab at 31:
1. Panik
2. Morin
3. Ferraro
4. Budish
Then a goalie at 56.
Chicken Parm’s Son at #31
we want Chicken Parm Jr!!!!!
Al L - Couldn’t have said it better than myself. The only knock on de Haan is that he needs to get stronger. What 18 year old doesn’t???? He had a great OHL rookie year on a bad Oshawa team (minus Tavares). They say he is a great skater and a good puck moving defenseman. He has untapped potential. Watch how happy everyone is when he is tearing up the OHL next season.
I rather Garth “overpay” and “reach” for a guy they love instead of having a guy they are OK with fall into their lap
Good for Snow to make a move and the kid he wanted at #12 - if he believed the kid was worth then nice move. The TSN rankings with him at #23 - SO WHAT - look at the other rankings people are ALL OVER the board. We got JT, time to look ahead and not back. Go Islanders
off topic for 1 sec…..
Brian Burkes face watching the Islanders steal the show.. PRICELESS!!!!
OK … I just went back over my own mock draft now that I’m awake and had a cup of coffee …
I thought I had de Haan at 26 going to the NYI … but it was Olsen … I actually had de Haan at 18 … in CTV, TSN and other scouting reports he was listed as one of the biggest under the radar players.
The notes I wrote down on him was … comparisons to Mike Green at the same development level with great upside … great mobility and incredible hockey smarts … biggest negatives … weight (big deal) and that he was one of the youngest defensemen at the top of the draft class.
I also made a note that since John Tavares and Del Zotto were traded away … the press has mentioned that the Generals became de Haan’s team. He’s a blue chipper in the making.
My question is … did a lot of teams’ scouts also have him as the hidden gem forcing Garth to have to trade up to get their man?
The Islanders desperately wanted a puck moving defenseman. After Hedman & OEL, you had David Rundblad & John Moore(who I don’t like because their Defensive awarensess & instincts are terrible). So it came down to Kulikov, DeHaan & Leddy. I like Leddy but I had DeHaan rated a little higher. With Kulikov there is a Russian risk of him playing over there for big money.. Personally I think it was worth the risk, but oh well. But if they didn’t want that headache than DeHaan was the next best guy.. Red Line Report calls Dehaan “the best pure passing, puck moving Defenseman in the Draft”.,..From FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS DRAFT PREVIEW–#20 Overall-Calvin Dehaan-” the out of nowhere category comes this slick two-way defender…skates extremely well w/ Neidermayer-like pivots & solid overall mobility..likes to carry the puck & create offensive situations for his linemates..has the vision, creativity & puck distribution skilss to make everyone around him better..has outstanding vision & knows where his options are at all times..is poised & has a high panic threshold..smart defensively & plays his angles well. his intelligence & ability to communicate direction are highly regarded…Is masterful at running the PP from the point..works hard at improving his game..’Weakness’-Physically he is weak and doesnt currently have the ability to play a strong defensive game because of his slender build. his shot could also use help as it lacks velocity…
de Haan at #12. They sure know how to put a damper on a great party. What the heck were they thinking. BAD BAD move. Wasted to many picks. My elation has turned into a sick feeling in my stomach. I hope they get their heads on straight for rd 2. I think they trade down with #31 to recoup those wasted picks
With #31 a Finnish goalie? WT heck. Idiots. Complete Idiots
Garth was about to look like a genious and he could’ve done us proud, finally putting his “naysayers” to rest…We were being pumped up while he was making the trades and when he made the pick, it was deflating…I guess I’ll reserve judgment until we see how these guys pan out…
CB, do you think these seemingly, brash moves, by Snow are cause for concern???
