Garth was about to look like a genious and he could’ve done us proud, finally putting his “naysayers” to rest…We were being pumped up while he was making the trades and when he made the pick, it was deflating…I guess I’ll reserve judgment until we see how these guys pan out…

CB, do you think these seemingly, brash moves, by Snow are cause for concern???

de Haan at #12. They sure know how to put a damper on a great party. What the heck were they thinking. BAD BAD move. Wasted to many picks. My elation has turned into a sick feeling in my stomach. I hope they get their heads on straight for rd 2. I think they trade down with #31 to recoup those wasted picks

The Islanders desperately wanted a puck moving defenseman. After Hedman & OEL, you had David Rundblad & John Moore(who I don’t like because their Defensive awarensess & instincts are terrible). So it came down to Kulikov, DeHaan & Leddy. I like Leddy but I had DeHaan rated a little higher. With Kulikov there is a Russian risk of him playing over there for big money.. Personally I think it was worth the risk, but oh well. But if they didn’t want that headache than DeHaan was the next best guy.. Red Line Report calls Dehaan “the best pure passing, puck moving Defenseman in the Draft”.,..From FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS DRAFT PREVIEW–#20 Overall-Calvin Dehaan-” the out of nowhere category comes this slick two-way defender…skates extremely well w/ Neidermayer-like pivots & solid overall mobility..likes to carry the puck & create offensive situations for his linemates..has the vision, creativity & puck distribution skilss to make everyone around him better..has outstanding vision & knows where his options are at all times..is poised & has a high panic threshold..smart defensively & plays his angles well. his intelligence & ability to communicate direction are highly regarded…Is masterful at running the PP from the point..works hard at improving his game..’Weakness’-Physically he is weak and doesnt currently have the ability to play a strong defensive game because of his slender build. his shot could also use help as it lacks velocity…

OK … I just went back over my own mock draft now that I’m awake and had a cup of coffee …

I thought I had de Haan at 26 going to the NYI … but it was Olsen … I actually had de Haan at 18 … in CTV, TSN and other scouting reports he was listed as one of the biggest under the radar players.

The notes I wrote down on him was … comparisons to Mike Green at the same development level with great upside … great mobility and incredible hockey smarts … biggest negatives … weight (big deal) and that he was one of the youngest defensemen at the top of the draft class.

I also made a note that since John Tavares and Del Zotto were traded away … the press has mentioned that the Generals became de Haan’s team. He’s a blue chipper in the making.

My question is … did a lot of teams’ scouts also have him as the hidden gem forcing Garth to have to trade up to get their man?

Good for Snow to make a move and the kid he wanted at #12 - if he believed the kid was worth then nice move. The TSN rankings with him at #23 - SO WHAT - look at the other rankings people are ALL OVER the board. We got JT, time to look ahead and not back. Go Islanders

Al L - Couldn’t have said it better than myself. The only knock on de Haan is that he needs to get stronger. What 18 year old doesn’t???? He had a great OHL rookie year on a bad Oshawa team (minus Tavares). They say he is a great skater and a good puck moving defenseman. He has untapped potential. Watch how happy everyone is when he is tearing up the OHL next season.

I rather Garth “overpay” and “reach” for a guy they love instead of having a guy they are OK with fall into their lap

I can’t believe the ‘experts’ on this site complaining how Snow blew it with De Haan. He obviously was higher on their than other scouting organizations and also at least one other teams, that is why they traded from 16 to 12. I think it shows how highly they regard this guy, who came on close to the end of the season and at the U-18s. Once Tavares and Del Zotto (Generals #1 dman) were traded he eventually took over a rebuilding team. I think the Islanders might have landed a gem.

I’d like to seem them grab at 31:

1. Panik
2. Morin
3. Ferraro
4. Budish

Then a goalie at 56.

I was just out on a 17 hour mission over here in Iraq and all I could think about the whole time was who my beloved Islanders were going to take at #1. It was such a pleasant surprise to see Tavares was the pick. Give it time for De Haan, who knows how he is really going to pan out. Have faith in Garth, it might have seemed like a lot to give up for a guy projected later on in the draft, but maybe Garth and Janks are onto something that we as arm chair gm;s don’t know about. Who knows who they might sign on July 1st. I can’t was to come home in the fall and go see this soon-to-be amazing team.

PS The icing on the cake for the night was the Yankee’s blowout of the Mutts, Mets.
