“I WANT TO BE AN ISLANDER”
John Tavares goes one-on-one with Point Blank

by admin on June 3rd, 2009 at 9:25 am

Islanders Point Blank on Twitter

John Tavares called late last night from Pittsburgh and immediately wanted to make a point. Our conversation:

How’s your trip to the Stanley Cup Final?

It’s been amazing. Having a great time. Hey, I don’t mean to cut you off, but is it okay if we get to something right away that’s been bothering me?

Of course. What do you got?

I’m glad we’re finally getting to talk and I can get my voice out there to New York and Long Island. Once and for all, I want to be clear that it would be a privilege to be drafted by the New York Islanders. Please let everyone know that. I can’t believe some of the stuff that’s been out there. I like the Canadian media and I’m on the web reading like everyone else, but some it has gotten out of hand. I don’t know where they get that stuff.

How do you think it got started?

I don’t know. From the very beginning, I consistently said that I would sign with the team that drafted me. When the Islanders won the lottery, there’s been so much garbage out there. It’s really bothered me. Even before I visited with the Islanders and got to know the owner and the GM, there was never an issue. Now that I’ve gotten to know what the franchise is about, I feel even stronger about it. I want to be part of them rebuilding into a contender. I want to be part of a Stanley Cup team there. I want to be an Islander. Can you please make that clear in your article?

You just did. Tell me about your meetings with the Islanders.

I’ve been in communication with them a lot. I know they saw many of my games. Ryan Jankowski and some of their Eastern scouts saw me a lot. I’ve gotten to know (development scout) Eric Cairns pretty well. Jankowski and Cairns are great guys, always working. Then I sat down with Ryan and the scouts for the 20-minute session at the Draft Combine and I saw them at the testing.

You passed on doing the push-ups. Is the injury anything serious?

Not at all, and everyone knows that or will know that.

Besides the combine, Charles Wang and Garth Snow traveled to Ontario to watch you play.

That was really appreciated, that they would take that kind of time out of their schedules – especially a team owner – and take a flight to watch my team play and come say hello after. Tremendous.

The big meeting, of course, was your trip to Long Island.

It was my first time, and I was blown away by how beautiful it was. It’s close to one of the greatest cities in the world, yet it has so many really nice areas. Looked to me like an incredible place to live.

Did you stay at the Garden City Hotel?

No. Actually, I stayed at Garth Snow’s house.

You’re kidding.

No (laughs). I’m serious. It was awesome. We got to spend a lot of time talking about the team and the community. We had a few meals together. We played golf.

Tam O’Shanter Country Club?

Yeah, that was it. Everything was just fantastic.

How long were you there?

Two days, two nights and flew home the next morning.

Besides breakfast with Snow, someone else took you out for breakfast.

Yeah, Doug Weight. That was so key. My time with Doug will stay with me the rest of my career. You know him – he’s just a great person and so helpful. I’ll be honest with you. When I first heard about it, I was thinking, I’m 18, he’s a bit older. Are we going to have enough to talk about? I was a little nervous. But Doug could not have been cooler. Put it this way: even if I don’t end up with the Islanders, I feel I have a friend, an experienced player who’ll help me out when I need advice.

Did you meet with Charles Wang on the Island?

Yes. We only talked briefly when they came to my game, so it was great to sit down with him for a while. We met for about an hour and had lunch, had some laughs, talked about his plans for the team. The Lighthouse Project looks really nice. I think it would be great to be part of a team that builds into a contender while the Lighthouse Project gets done. The Islanders have an incredible tradition and a winning history. This would be like a new chapter for the franchise, and to be part of it would be special for me.

Who do you know of the younger players on the Islanders?

I played with Josh Bailey on Team Ontario in an Under-17 tournament. Great playmaker and really good person. We were on the same line last year in Team Canada camp for the World Junior Championships. I’ve played against Kyle Okposo in international competition. What a good player he is.

I hear you’re going with Matt Duchene and Victor Hedman (today) to visit Tampa Bay. [Note: yes, it appears the Lightning are having them in together and at the same time. Fascinating]. Besides your meetings with the Islanders and the Lightning, are any other teams bringing you to their cities?

There are no other visits scheduled. Just the Islanders and Tampa Bay.

Do you have any idea of the expectations that would come your way if the Islanders selected you first overall?

I heard some fans were chanting my name at the last game of the regular season. That was nice.

The team has a lot at stake, with the arena issue and with the rebuilding program. Is that something you’re ready to handle?

It comes with the territory. I understand it and embrace it. I mean, I know it’s not the same as the NHL, but I’ve had pressure put on me since I was 14 years old. I’ve been in the spotlight in Canada. I know how to handle it. It comes down to playing hockey, and I’m confident in my ability to get it done. There may be some growing pains in the first year with whatever NHL team I end up with, but we’ll work through them. It’s really not a concern for me at all.

Do you have any indication of where you’re going to end up?

No. The Islanders have been real professional and gracious toward me, but they aren’t talking about their plans to me or anyone else. I think they want to keep it exciting. It seems to have generated a lot of hockey talk since the lottery. Garth probably wants to keep everyone on their toes and see what he can do. Of course you always want to know as soon as possible, but I understand his position.

Let’s do this again: do you want to be drafted first overall by the New York Islanders?

It would be a dream come true. I really hope it happens.

  1. avatar derek says:

WOW, OK, you’re in. Do you want #91 or #61?

  2. avatar michael says:

how do you NOT draft this guy? well, i guess if milbury was involved we’d take a goalie, but since its garth snow i say we draft tavares..

  3. avatar Lafontaine16 says:

Awesome. Just Awesome. He better be the #1 pick for the Isles. His passion is amazing. Living in London (I know he was a London Knight for only a short period) and being a huge Isles fan, it would be amazing if he goes #1. Garth and co, please pick JT!!!

  4. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

It’s going to be a beatiful wednesday. Thanks CB. And JT, you’r welcome to NY.

  5. avatar nightfly says:

JT – your lips to Snow’s ears, man.

  6. avatar Anthony says:

Tavares, what jersey # will you be? I want to order my Islanders/John Tavares Jersey now!!

  7. avatar thepolishprince says:

Please let me hear this at the Coli on June 26th : With the #1 pick in the 2009 NHL eEntry Draft the NY Islanders are proud to select John Tavares.” I so want this guy wearing orange and blue in September.

  8. avatar Mick Vukota says:

    Excellent interview CB!

  9. avatar paulyg says:

Come on down JT, the price is right !!!

  10. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Does there really need to be any other thought process into this. He wants to be an Islander, Most of the fan base wants him. And it just so happen he is the projected # 1 player at the exact same time The islander hold the # 1 pick. Snow if you take Tavares and it goes bad no one can fault you. If you take one of the other two and it fails, Good luck getting anyone to sign up for those packages or continue to go to lighthouse meetings

  11. avatar Keith says:

“I want to be an Islander”
    Pick him. nuff said

  12. avatar Matt Brosseau says:

    JOHN TA-VA-RES!

Struck me how mature this kid is…he can handle New York, no problem. Chris, I can’t believe he interrupted you to talk about something that was “bothering him”…did he actually do that or was that artistic interviewer’s license?

  13. avatar Joe says:

I cant take this anymore, Garth just come out and say we have decided to take JT with the first pick.

  14. avatar kevin fitz says:

I personally believe Snow wants to take JT. He just wants to make sure he does all his homework on Hedman and Duchene just to make sure that he is not over looking anything on them. Due diligence is all this is. At the end of the day I am about 80% sure they will be picking Tavares.

For full disclosure I am in the Hedman camp of the fan base. But this interview really impressed me. I think part of me wanted Hedman so badly because I did not fully believe JT wanted to be here and he would just bolt as soon as he possibly could. But now that he has stated how passionately he wants to be on the Island I am about 50/50 on who I want them to pick.

  15. avatar Gloobenberg says:

I just got the chills reading that.

    Please Garth…Make him an Islander!

  16. avatar David says:

CB- Awesome job. Nice to get the real story on this kid. DRAFT HIM NOW!

  17. Very interesting how he met with Doug Weight. I think that is a very telling sign. He met with the same group of people that both Duchene and Hedman met with, and then not only did he stay at Garth Snow’s house for two nights, but he also had a nice sit down with Doug Weight, a current roster player and leader for the New York Islanders. Although Garth is not trying to tip his hand, I think some tipping may have occurred after reading this interview…

  18. avatar johnRVC says:

Draft this kid and stick him in a house with Doug weight the day after.
Have Trottier teach to play defense and get Bourne to work with him on skating.
Do not let him work out with Dipietro EVER.

  19. avatar Jon R. says:

How can you not base a franchise around this guy?? He is first class all the way, can handle pressure, and, o yeah, light the lamp. Snojanks, go get us JT!! and I think he should wear 91 and Butchy should hand over the jersey.

  20. avatar butch91 says:

Did the other two stay at Snow’s house too?

  21. avatar Dino says:

Its articles like this that make you wonder what will happen at the draft party if they dont draft him………..

  22. avatar Word says:

They should have played a round on Bethpage Black!

Islanders1984 is right, this truly is a no-brainer!

  23. avatar mw147 says:

Very, very, very impressive. He is clearly a polished and mature young man, ready to handle the pressure that will come with being a franchise savior.
I have been in favor of drafting him, now I feel more strongly.

  24. avatar JD says:

Great read, thanks for posting this Chris

  25. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

    Draft John Tavares TODAY!!!!

(Ok, I’ll wait until June 26th, but you know what I mean…)

CB, thanks as always. He and the other top 4 draft picks were on Coaches Corner last night and he seemed more poised than the others. That same level of maturity (at least with the media) comes through in your interview as well.

    Garth, do the right thing!

  26. avatar Chris M says:

Tavares is the man. There should be no doubt on June 26th as to who Garth selects as the #1 draft pick of the New York Islanders. The only thing missing from this interview was a dig at the Rangers, but that will come in due time. Modell’s should start printing jerseys now (or at least once we confirm what number Johnny wants). The draft party cannot come soon enough.

  27. avatar Larry says:

sounds to me johnny boy’s found a home. great decision to lock up dougie weight for another year, its only june and hes already starting a relationship with a player we havent even drafted yet. hes the kinda guy we should keep around as long as he continues to play, and maybe even after. i dont know the details about how other franchises conduct their predraft visits, but i love how the islanders do theirs. i understand why the kids in the past have said they have fallen in love with the island and want to make it their home. kudos to snow, wang, and the rest of the crew. its nice to have an organization who is doing things the right way.

  28. avatar Rich says:

Didn’t Snow say he picked up Hedman from the hotel when VH was in town and he drove him around Long Island? But then Tavares actually stayed at Snow’s house for two nights. I’m sure this probably means very little, if anything at all, but maybe something worth noting??

  29. avatar Valentino says:

    Daddy likes…

  30. Isles say if the scouts say he’ll score 40 to 50 goals a year in the NHL, draft him!

  31. avatar bob l says:

    victor who?

  32. avatar 7th Woman says:

I do not envy Garth Snow having to make a decision so important and so difficult. They are all great kids with so much potential and so much to offer.

Great interview Chris. No one puts it out there quite the way you do.

  33. avatar James says:

F*** the Toronto media that spins bs hockey stories all the time. Can’t wait for the 26th. Snow, stop playing with our emotions and say the Tavares is the front runner.

  34. avatar Greg says:

This is a great interview, that I know has no bearing on what will happen. I kind of chuckled at Tam O’Shanter Country Club. I used to valet park there when I was in high school, I can’t imagine the scene I would make it I opened the door for GS and JT at 16 years old.

Then again, that place had the worst members ever.

  35. avatar stevedepot says:

The fact that the kid came out and stated this just makes me proud of this teams logo, the history and that hope is not just a pipe dream.
Great interview. Better than my morning cup of coffee.

  36. avatar Melvin says:

#14 – I agree that it’s a good guess that they want Tavares, but another factor is that remaining quiet on the whole thing keeps open the possibility of a ridiculous trade offer being sent in. Who knows what some other GM might offer. By not saying anything, at lest the possibility of that stays.

  37. avatar alex says:

i’m a member of the Tam O’ Shanter Counrty Club…. i would love to b playing golf there and run into Tavares one day!

  38. avatar C.J. says:

I was so torn between JT and VH. If anything, leaning towards VH. Also felt that VH showed more personality.

    Well, this won me over.

We need a goalscorer. Someone w/a suit of armor who’s seen pressure before.

    This kid is it.

    Sign him up.

  39. avatar Zach Teller says:

CB maybe you should send this interview to TSN to silence the Toronto rumors once and for all. All kidding aside this kid is all business and he’s all about winning. He’s a player free agents are going to want to play with because he makes everyone around him better. Do the right think Garth. PICK HIM

  40. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

Great read. Definitely puts a smile on the face!

  41. avatar Joe says:

That is great to hear. Man I hope Garth Snow does the right thing and takes this kid. Only a few more days away and I hope we aren’t disappointed. When we hear his name announced as our pick I think there will big one big sigh of relief.

  42. avatar Pete M says:

I was on the fence before but now I’m sold. I know it’s only one interview but the kid seems mature beyond his years. He has to be the pick.

  43. avatar IsleofNJ says:

    Two things:
    1) First, can we get an AMEN !
    2) Any chance of Canadian Media posting this blog so they will finally give up on the Isle Bashing?

  44. avatar UIF says:

You can’t help but be impressed with the comments made by both Tavares and Hedman. Very impressive…and humble…for young top athletes. That Tavares cleared the air on the Long Island stuff before the first question was even asked took me by surprise. Cheers to that, John Tavares.

  45. avatar Brian G says:

Just announce you are taking Tavares already…like someone mentioned above Modell’s can at least get some Islanders T-Shirts ready for the week of the draft with #91 on the back.

  46. avatar Nick Isles From Brooklyn says:

When do the John Taverez Jerseys go on sale! GET ER DONE! ALl due respect to Hedman – This team needs a new Face – a new Franchise player – more than just a good hockey player and John is it! PS – Think John and Trottier got together after the game last night?

  47. avatar bob l says:

and now can we stop questioning his character?

now we just need to have him play with Petrov at rookie camp :-)

  48. CB, thanks for this. I try to remain open-minded, and trust the GM and scouts to make the right call even when it’s contrary to fan opinion. I always think of the Reggie Bush situation in the NFL…the Texans ignored just about everyone to take Mario Williams, and it turns out that was the right call. But this is one situation where I’d find it hard to accept anything but Tavares. Garth, don’t try to reinvent the wheel here. Do the right thing.

  49. avatar Knight of Cups says:

The Draftparty will explode when we pick JT. They can undo years of s*&t by picking this kid. A marketing maelstrom!

  50. avatar Blake says:

This paragraph from Newsday gives me a gut feeling that Snow is targeting Hedman:

“Of course, Snow is fully aware that fan sentiment is overwhelmingly in favor of choosing Tavares, who could be the goal-scoring sniper the Islanders lack. “I appreciate the fact we have a passionate fan base that’s excited we have the first pick,” Snow said. “Anything I do will be done with the mindset that we’re trying to bring the Stanley Cup to Long Island.”

  51. avatar cusi says:

great interview. loved how he responded to the blog you wrote yesterday on no interview with him or matt. i guess he is a reader.

  52. avatar bergie20 says:

jt sounds like a really cool guy. we’d be lucky to have either him or hedman.

  53. avatar Devon says:

I’ve made it clear that I want Hedman. I’ve probably said that a dozen times here.

    Screw it–LETS DRAFT THIS KID!

  54. avatar Pete says:

Thanks Botta and I agree with #10 100%.

They would be insane not to pick this kid.

  55. avatar bossy22 says:

The 10% of me that wanted Hedman is now 0%. 100% Tavares. Now, let’s talk about what we are going to do with the rest of the picks

  56. avatar mm30 says:

great piece! once again CB you cast a shadow over the rest us here mere human bloggers.

    Don’t ever stop!

  57. avatar stevedepot says:

    #41,
if you plan on ordering a “Taverez” (actually it’s Tavares) jersey, make sure they spell it correctly. Last year I saw a Caps fan with a FEDEROV jersey holding it up against the glass (it’s actually spelled FEDOROV).

  58. avatar Matt says:

wow, this was a great read. tavares seems like a great kid. hopefully everything works out.

  59. avatar Ajax says:

I find it interesting that DP did not meet the kid too, I mean he has nothing but time now and he is supposed to be the backbone of the franchise.

  60. avatar Danielle says:

Great interview, great kid. I remember how disgruntled I was when reading the Toronto bs about how Tavares didn’t want to be an Islander. I’m glad he’s confident and willing to clear the air. However, the question remains: Does he REALLY want to be an Islander, or does he really just want to be picked first? I want him drafted more than anything and I’ll be there at the draft party waiting to hear it, but something to think about.

  61. avatar Janine Le' Bean says:

Wow, all I can say is wow. This young man certainly has his head screwed on straight. Refreshing to see in this day and age. Love his enthusiasm for being and Islander, that does say a lot.

  62. avatar RAmen says:

    Awesome!

  63. avatar Bryan says:

10-1 odds on them taking Braydon Schenn

  64. avatar Willis says:

    Great stuff!
Can’t wait to see what happens.
    :)

  65. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

this is best interview ever. Suck it Toronto.

CB thank you for clarifying everything.

  66. avatar Isles78 says:

There has been a lot of talk from Canadian media that the Isles weren’t sold on JT’s skating…………….it’s BS. Between Canadian media and certain teams that are spreading this crap I think right now it’s 100% clear Tavares is going #1 to the Islanders. This is a big piece of the puzzle and I know 90% of Isles fans want this guy to be our selection.

  67. avatar Potential Season Ticket Holder says:

Draft JT and you can take out “Potential” season ticket holder. This is a no brainer, I just wish I could trust the isles brass. I hope they tear the NVMC down to the ground if they pass on this kid.

  68. avatar phishstyx says:

Love this Kid! we want JOHN!!!

  69. avatar StevieL says:

CB! Congrats! Tavares contacts PB to air it out!! You have become the voice of the Islander faithful!!Funny the day you print the Hedman stuff, Tavares rings the phone!! Mgmt. didn’t want the shift in sentiment to move over to Hedman, did they??
After reading this, how can we draft anyone else? How do you pass on this guy?? The passion is there, the maturity is there. He, day 1 becomes a media force for the Isles!!You think this kid won’t be a winner?? And he’s 18!!!
I for one can’t wait for June 26th. sitting in NVMC when Bettman announces ” With the first pick in the 2009 NHL draft the Isles select,…John Tavares”! The place is going to explode!!
You should have asked JT, under what name does he post here!!

  70. avatar potvin05 says:

Great interview. Very refreshing to hear the kid go out of his way to say he wants to play here. Best thing I’ve read in months, thanks CB.

  71. avatar Ketch says:

Ok so…Hedman stays in a hotel and essentially meets with the Isles for about 3 hours.

Duchene was there for a day. It’s unclear what they did (I’m sure a tour and meet/greet was included), but it was a one day thing.

Tavares spent 2 days, 2 nights on Long Island and stayed at Snow’s house, played golf, talked alot of hockey, and even had breakfast with Dougie Weight. Not only that, but Wang and Snow took the time to travel and watch JT play a playoff game live.

We’ve heard Snow say that he has a clear favorite among the 3 kids.

Now you tell me who you think that favorite is? It’s so obvious.

  72. avatar Vinny says:

Awesome interview!! Cant wait til they draft Tavares!! Lets go Islanders!!

  73. avatar Isles08 says:

    John Tavares baby!!
what a class act this kid is…the fact that he is going out of his way to say this stuff is pretty incredible given the state of this team. He sounds truly sincere.. JT is hands down the ONLY choice this team can make.

  74. avatar Chris TMC says:

Nicce- WTG John!!! :D Great interview, music to the ears of the masses Im sure!

  75. avatar Lars says:

LMAO at #55….seriously though, we can’t knock Snow until he doesn’t take JT… he’s gotta explore it all and the best way to do that is to keep it close to the vest.

  76. avatar Mark P says:

Wow: A Media Savy 18 year old and the Islanders/Garth Snow handling the situation properly….Guy seem’s to have the maturity to step right in. Great work by CB….but more so by JT to make things crystal clear, starting the relationship with our fanbase right.
Here’s to hoping the Draft Party Certificate get’s us Free JT Tshirt’s on the 26th…..!!!!

  77. avatar Hale says:

i was in the camp of i don’t care who they take….i think now they gotta take jt

  78. avatar derek says:

As much as Snow is keeping tight lipped, I think this article was a bone thrown to us Die-Hards. Pretty much letting us in on who they are taking without actually saying anything.

  79. avatar frank nyc says:

JT has got to be the pick. He has got the skill to be our future #1 center and scorer. This interview was great. I love this kid’s attitude and i am very happy to hear he really wants to come here. JT you’ll love Ny. GO ISLESSS

  80. avatar Isles08 says:

    derek,
this article and interview were done by chris who runs this site, not by anyone actually affiliated with the team…there was no bone thrown.

  81. avatar Long Suffering says:

JT! JT! JT! JT! We want you right here on the Island as bad if not more than you want to be the #1 overall selection by the Islanders. The fans and the community will be fanatical in their support of you and the team. Charlie Wang — do not let Snow screw this up.

  82. avatar Zach Teller says:

I hope they pick this kid. All Business and will make people around him better and more importantly make free agents want to come and play with him

  83. avatar miketee says:

Funny…once upon a time Mike Milbury told us all how great it was to be be with the Islanders. I remember his first interview…”screw the Rangers; screw the Devils.”

    Just words.

  84. avatar Joey303 says:

Wow – I have been a Hedman guy all along – this has changed my tune. CB – a GREAT interview and the timing was perfect!! Im not one to say “great read” over every article like some on here, but “great read!! Draft him!!

  85. avatar potvin05 says:

Whoever puts Mike Milbury and John Tavares into the same thought, or post, for that matter, again is toast!!

  86. avatar Paul says:

Truly made my day. Gotta link this interview to the Canadian press so they can finally pipe down. Glad he met with Weight and not DP. Tavares!!!

  87. avatar K021 says:

I could ya not love this guy as an Isles fan???

He cares enough about what the fans think to go out of his way to make it clear to us that he “considers it a priveledge to be a NY Islander”!

He even stayed with Garth and played a round of golf. Did any of the other 2 stay with Garth like that?

Things are looking a little bit more positive in Islander country with Murray actually showing up at meetings and JT saying more than just the right things. Doug weights the man also

  88. avatar Dan says:

    just draft tavares

  89. avatar Ryan says:

So this guy will immediately sell seats and jerseys. Additionally he WANTS to be here to help build our team into a contender?

Of COURSE we will pass on him.

    PS- Doug Weight is class.

  90. avatar Shoogah says:

I wish we could have all of them but this is the one.

  91. avatar K021 says:

I have to learn to check for typos, I meant (How) not (I) for first word in last post. Sorry

  92. avatar Dan says:

I’m John Tavarse and I want to be an Islander!!

  93. avatar JT says:

    Nice job Chris.

  94. avatar 303Joe says:

Great interview Chris! Also great to hear JT talk about the Isles in such a positive manner and wanting to play here so badly. I was kinda of on the fence 60% Tavares 40% Hedman just hearing all positive things and the way he seems to handle himself I’m now about 80% JT 20% Hedman. Team needs scoring and this kid can do it.

  95. avatar Dan C says:

Maybe your best blog yet CB. I just got pumped up for #91 skating out onto NVMC Ice on opening night.

  96. avatar Mario says:

JT “We want you to be an Islander!!!!!!!!!!!”

  97. avatar Dan C says:

If you were John Taverse, you’d know that your last name is spelled “Tavares”

    brilliant!

  98. avatar Jon Mac says:

Game, set, match! Draft him Garth. I am glad to see the Islanders are getting some recognition for being first class through this process.

  99. avatar gary9-19-22 says:

NUFF SAID!!! Draft this kid and move on!!!!

  100. avatar Mikey says:

Great interview CB. Like Hedman and Duchene, he sounds like a good kid. I am not surprised that he wants to be picked number one by us. We can give him good ice time/media exposure, and he will probably have a higher bonus ceiling for his entry level deal as a number one pick. They all sound like great players, but I am still concerned that the fanbase has become obsessed with Tavares and unfairly labeled him our savior. By all accounts, he still has a lot of work to do before becoming an effective, multi-dimensional player in the NHL. No matter who we pick, I just hope our fans are patient and don’t expect miracles right away.

  101. avatar tond24 says:

this is our boy, i wish snow job would just say it…stop all this on the edge of our seat stuff..havnt we put up with enough. say J.T. and lets focus on moving into the top 15 for a second stud and lets play a lil hockey

  102. Watched the finals game 3 last night when they interviewed JT. Seems like a winner to me.I actually wrote to pick Hedman first. Changed my mind, this kid is really very inpressive all around. Reminded be of a young Ryan Smyth

  103. avatar Rachel says:

Nuff said. Please dear god draft him.

  104. avatar Strummer's Army says:

WOW, 99 comments by 11am on a weekday. Impressive.

    “Scoop” Botta strikes again.

One I think it is great the prospects are realising how important Point Blank is.

Is Tavares the only guy who stayed that long and the only one who stayed at Snow’s house? That might be the tip of the hand right there.

  105. avatar TONYSAC says:

IF this interview doesnt give you the answer to who the ISLANDERS draft, then call me a KATE MURRAY supporter!!!! TAVARES ALL THE WAY!!! awesome interview CB….When I grow up, i dont want to be a Toys R’Us KID i want to be C.B!!!!!

  106. avatar Captain Crunch says:

Sounds like this kid would skate through a wall for our team. If we don’t take him, management should be called to account for their mishandling of the franchise.

Trots said “mum’s the word,” but it’s interesting that JT comes out and states flat-out that he wants to play for us.

Two or three years from now, we might actually have some exciting games in the Old Barn in May/June….

  107. CB: This was a great interview and has pushed me over my limit. I haven’t been home to Long Island since May 1994, but I will be there for the Draft Party on June 26th when JOHN TAVARAS is picked. Thanx for keeping the fire burning for all us diehard Islander fans.

  108. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

F YEAH! He will be ours… Oh yes, he will be ours…

  109. avatar isles99 says:

im sure john tavares will read this blog after having called to do the interview:
john, i have followed you for 3 yeard now knowing you would possibly be the 1st pick, i hope the islander management feels the same way I do. I hope you become over face of the franchise……it is truly a shame if anyone neglects to see the impact JT will have….JT will play for whoever drafts him….i can’t believe some of you bought what the canadian media was selling…..i swear if they draft JT, im out. look at this kid’s resume….what else does he need to do?

  110. avatar 2277 says:

I aghree with # 15 – i got chills reading the interview as well and a big dumb ear to ear grin! According to the Isles website, almost 6,000 tickets were taken for the draft party at the Coliseum. I would think it will be closer to 10,000 by the day of the draft and the place will go bananas when JT is announced # 1. Then I bet Snow has a trick or two up his sleeve and we package the lat 1st rd’er and the early 2nd’s to move up to mid first round!

All this plus Wang, Tom S, and Katie Murray meeting this week….

  111. avatar Smitty says:

    Ketch(71):

Good reasoning. Although I think Hedman was a little more than 3 hours, I do think the length of visits are telling.

  112. avatar Smitty says:

Plus, the way Tavares seems to handle the spotlight he will make a better ‘face’ of the franchise than Hedman or Duchene. Not that is the biggest reason, but if they are that close in terms of who the Isles want.

  113. avatar Mikey says:

I would caution against reading into the length of the visits as a signal regarding who we are drafting. Maybe they decided to have Tavares in for an extra day because they had had more questions about Tavares’ character/personality? Maybe they know Hedman better already; didn’t Victor say that he had dinner with our people in Sweden and knew our folks very well? Per CB’s Hedman article yesterday, maybe our folks wanted to meet with Victor for two days but could not do so due to the NHL’s scheduled Pittsburgh trip for the prospects last night. Until we get confirmation from the Isles management about the selection, I would not get your hopes up either way. Garth Snow seems very secretive.

  114. avatar Seth says:

this guy is going to ressurect hockey on long island, and ultimately keep our team here! i get chills reading this, june 26th can’t come soon enough!

  115. avatar Dr. Generosity says:

Would Snow be pleased that Tavares has disclosed the details of his visit? I greatly respect the guy’s passion and intensity, but I wonder whether this public lobbying hurts or helps him.

  116. avatar stevedepot says:

    CB, question,

any chance you can get a few questions in on Jaffe and the radio guys, (Steve Mears and Chris King) and get their gut feelings NOW about who they believe will be drafted 1st as well as Snow’s options with later picks and possible trades, signings.
Miss those guys. Call that interview, “Isles Media Q & A?”

  117. avatar misterpink says:

“I want to be part of them rebuilding into a contender. I want to be part of a Stanley Cup team there. I want to be an Islander.”

    Suck it, Canada.

“I want to be an Islander.”

JT went beyond the “it would be an honor” crap – and came right out and said it.

If Snow was really planning on going somewhere besides JT – this has to have made it that much harder .. Fan support for JT has to be off the charts after he makes a statement like that.

  118. avatar dalcy says:

sounds like a great kid. just a an interview, but that opening remark from him speaks volumes.

  119. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

MisterPink….. There are alot of Isles Fans in Canada.

And it’s not all of Canada you are upset with it is the Toronto Media.

And even so… there are only a select few that make the Toronto media look bad.

Steve Simmons, Al Strachan, and a few other clowns.

Anyway…looks like good times on Long Island are coming.

BD has a nice blog today also if anybody is interested.

  120. avatar Mike L says:

I already got my London Knights #61 Tavares jersey. I can’t wait to get a #91 Isles Tavares 3rd jersey

  121. avatar Kepa says:

Sounds like a good kid.. says the right things.. but so far all 3 have.

No matter how many times you guys say it..
this is not a “NO BRAINER” pick.

  122. avatar Isles08 says:

this interview has me grinning from ear to ear….drafting him will definetly have me buying some sort of ticket package.

  123. avatar tond24 says:

so everyone thats interviewed sounds like a good kid and should be drafted according to so many posts on this page…but this is our guy

  124. avatar Gloobenberg says:

JT should just call Garth and say “Look, I want to be an Islander, all of your fans want me there..let’s do this!”

Man…the Draft can’t get here soon enough! Every friggin day i’m in pins and needles!

Hey Mike L…How much was that London Knights JT jersey? lol

  125. avatar Long Suffering says:

Let me first state that I am a die hard Mets fan. This interview suggests that JT could do for the Islanders what Jeter did for the Yankees — the kid not only has talent but he is total class and would be proud to be an Islander, bringing respect back to the entire organization. This is the kid to rebuild an organization around even if he ONLY scores 35-40 goals per year for the next 15 years. Other great players in the NHL will want to play with a kid of this character and talent. JT! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT!

  126. avatar bergie20 says:

i think it’s great that tavares said this but keep in mind that hedman told chris virtually the same thing. the pick will come down to whoever snow/jankowski feel can move this team closer to a cup. i don’t know who that is. and why in the world are the lightning having tavares, duchene, hedman in together? very weird.

  127. avatar Michael says:

That was.. like.. MOVING. lol.. man that was amazing.. I pray we take this kid.

So much goes right in just a few short seconds after Snow announces his name. It’s just really something that has to be done.

  128. avatar Ray says:

This is exactly the story I wanted to read. Thank you for this. Let me say that if Tavares took the time out of “his” busy schedule to reach out and make that statement, it’s possible he’ll be reading this right now. I speak for a vast number of Islander fans when I say “we want you here as well, John.” I personally would like to note his candor and maturity on how he has dealt with everything thus far. I cannot wait to be rooting for John Tavares in an Islander uniform. Here’s to June 26th!

  129. avatar Brian says:

how could u not draft a guy that says it would be a dream come true to play for your team?? snow will upset many many isles fans if tavares is not called with that first overall pick.

  130. avatar Blizzard says:

He stayed at Snows house!!!!LOL!!!! Whats the chant gonna be JT.JT.JT? Nice I cant wait!

  131. avatar Brian From Jersey says:

Kid sounds like a captain of the future to me… if Garth drafts him, no one will blame him if it is a bust (he won’t be and I can’t wait for the 26th)

  132. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

I cant wait to draft Tavares. This kid is going to bring us excitement on the ice. I can not wait till June 26th!!!!!!!!

  133. avatar bob l says:

over 6700 tix to the draft party, with 3 1/2 weeks to go, pretty nice, the barn may actually sell-out in anticipation of this kid…

  134. avatar Jsr1034 says:

Announce him as the pick already Garth!

  135. avatar C.J. says:

Brian G (#45). Why would you announce picking JT now? Wouldn’t the better thing to do be to wait and let Tampa get antsy of the chance the Isles will take Hedman?

Let them offer something up to ensure this fact.

GMG opening his yap now does nothing for the situation and keeps him in a position of power.

I’m going to bet that if the Isles want Tavares, GMG gets a chip from Tampa on draft day to ensure the Isles won’t select Hedman.

  136. avatar jaymz27 says:

This has been a no brainer since last year’s training camp. This kid is the real deal. Don’t screw this up Garth!!!!! JT or KC!!!!!!!

  137. avatar Hud says:

XM will have talk about the Isles first pick on NHL live this morning.

  138. avatar beatlebailey says:

as a businessman how does Wang not tell Garth to take JT. It just makes too much $en$e…consensus No. 1, a scorer that we lack, a new face of the franchise, the fans no.1 choice..there is no downside in taking JT. No one can criticize a JT pick. I will be at the draft party and if his name is not chosen it should be hysterical to watch the reaction
come on isles – i signed up for 2 more years of season tix – listen to your customers and take JT!!

  139. avatar big dog says:

take JT and im buying season tix

  140. avatar Gutty34 says:

It has been a while since I posted. My mind cant take much more of this draft debate. CB – I dont care what any other blog says about you or us Isles fans on here but this is hands down the best place to come to if you truly care about the iIsles and more importantly truly care about hockey. First class all the way. This article in my mind simply puts to rest all the debate….done and over. JT period. No questions asked…no trades allowed……JT was poised and candid and showed the human side I felt was always coming out in the Hedman and Duchene interviews. I was concerned about his committment and personality being a bit blah. I love the fact he stayed at Snows place and met with Dougie. Says alot. I still would love to know where the others stayed but I would assume based on the traveleing parties they did not stay with Snow. Maybe something did tip in this article but again I dont want to read into any of this too much. It gave me the chills to hear talk about Bailey and Okposo. Add him to the mi with Comeau, Bergs, Neilsen, Beneditto and Imulgudden and we have a nucleus of young talent. Curious to see what we do with the 26, 31 and 37 (think thats right) and whoever we add forms a solid foundation that Mad Mike could only drem about (nmakes me sick to see him on the Stanley Cup broadcasts). I was sold on JT yestreday but today I am 100% certain that this is the pick. Please make this happen on the 26th Garth. Anything else will be selling us short. And laugh all you want but we may have the ability to swing a smart FA move(ala Streit) and actually compete for the bottom spot. Another top pick would be nice next year but winning is always better. CB – again – great article and nice to see JT taking matters into his own hands. What he stated is that basically all the Canadien media is b.s. so we can officially say that anything they write or say going forward is not true.

  141. avatar lovin lethbridge says:

Maybe Garth and Co. have a plan to not draft JT. with the draft part at 6700, and getting the fans this excited about JT… then they DONT draft him… The old barn will burn! and then we NEED a new building:D
Seriously though, there are two scenarios that see the NVMC still standing June 27. JT is drafted, or they trade the pick for Crosby or Ovechkin… so either they really want a new building or they draft JT. simple.

  142. avatar jbella249 says:

Already had my tickets to the draft party. Hope to hear Tavares’ name #1 or it could get really ugly.

  143. avatar Vas says:

WHEN they draft JT the next thing I will be waiting for is the HOME OPENER with my JT JERSEY!

  144. avatar BOBBYDOG says:

if Tavares isn’t drafted the backlash from fans will sink this franchise, and rightfully so.

  145. avatar Ann Aquarian says:

    Awesome, awesome, awesome.

I’m really glad he’s a classy guy. Now, I really want the Isles to draft him.

  146. avatar mtrico says:

Sounds like a good kid. Hopefully we draft him, and he becomes the cornerstone of the next Islanders dynasty.

  147. avatar Jester69 says:

I’m a former season ticket holder. I’ll say it right now, if Garth picks JT I will at the very least buy a ticket package…. possibly seasons if I can swing it.

  148. avatar isles99 says:

    Dear Garth Snow,

Please take John Tavares and give us die-hard fans what we crave, an exciting team that can score and contend for the playoffs and stanley cup every year much like what the Chicago Blackhawks are doing right now. Offense is the new defense in the new NHL. Furthermore, if you draft JT, I will automatically put down my 2 grand for season tickets. I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way. If JT is a bust, I along with everyone has no right to say that you are a bad GM. Any GM whose team did not have a 20 goal scorer last year would choose the guy who could put the puck in the net. No one will secodn guess your decision Garth so please give us starved Islander fans what we have craved for so long, an exciting young nucleas of Bailey, Okposo, Tavares, and Streit will contend for the Cup every year.
    Thanks,
    Isles99

  149. avatar Blizzard says:

YES!!!!!!Islanjder country get ready for a new era. With JT Baily Okposo we are heading back to respectability!!!!! Now if the geriatric goaltender can stay healthy……also if drafting JT isnt enough, we have the 26th, 31st etc. I have never been more excited about a draft!!!!! We all deserve it.

  150. avatar Daniel says:

All I can say is wow, this was much needed to hear. It has been a while since I last posted but this made me overly excited. I have always wanted Tavares to become an Islander, but I never really knew what he was thinking. After reading all of Hedman’s comments it really made me think, “wow this kid really wants to be an Islander!” I never got that feeling about Tavares, and it was the one negative I could pick up compared to Hedman who had said all the right things. Now, I must say I am totally impressed that Tavares took the time to make things clear and set the record straight. They MUST take this kid. It would be an absolute honor to watch him skate for our team.

  151. avatar Jamerson says:

Tavares’ comments about his interaction with Weight make me particularly excited about the following scenario: we draft JT, move him to wing so that he has less defensive responsibility, and we put him on a line with Weight at center. On every shift, Doug will be there to mentor him. That could be huge for his development.

Plus, imagine the power play: Streit and Weight at the points, Tavares and KO down low…we may actually score some goals!

  152. avatar tond24 says:

#134 y would tampa get antsy..u think there gonna cry if we take hedman and the are forced to put J.T. with stamkos…they all in the best position..they cant lose…we need goals we arnt that bad on D with DP in net but we cant score for anything no no 20 goal scorers is a joke in todays game.J.T. J.T.

  153. avatar James says:

No, I am the real John Tavares.

  154. avatar Isles81 says:

Great interview – you can feel the excitement building over this kid. It’s been a long time since I could feel this kind of positive vibe around this team. Come on Garth – pick JT!

  155. avatar Tom Barone says:

OMG I just passed out twice! Did I hear him say he WANTS to play for the Islanders???? I know he always said he would play for whomever drafts him but to come out and lay it out on the table like that is crazy!!!!! GET THIS KID IN AN ISLANDERS UNIFORM! Give him BOSSY’s old locker, give him what ever he wants!! just get this kid!!!! hurry before he snaps out of it and realizes what he just said.

  156. avatar upstatenyifan says:

This is just the type of story I have been hoping to read. JT wanting to be an Islander is music to my ears. I wonder if Garth strapped on the pads for some ball hockey while JT was at the house so that he could see some of his moves first hand? lol.

  157. avatar Chris says:

God I hope Snowy is reading this!

  158. avatar Nicky Nice says:

best post ever!!!!! CB, you da man! Tavares = #1 pick!

  159. avatar bcarroll25 says:

you think garth could lend him a comb

  160. avatar geduffer says:

Personally, I can’t wait for June 26th to be over. Just as everyone keeps saying the same thing over and over (“Draft JT or I’m done, etc.) I’ll do the same broken record as well: Garth is doing the right thing, both in the due diligence department and in the not tipping his hand department. I also think he will draft the player that he thinks will be the best selection for achieving the goal of bringing the Stanley Cup to Long Island. If he weren’t that way he’d be, uh, like someone we’ve known before.

  161. I love thinking about the prospect of drafting Tavares. Imagine down the middle we have Tavares as our first line center, Bailey as our second line center, Nielsen as our third line center, and Park as our fourth line center for the next five to six years. That is, until Park retires and then we have another fourth line center step in. Tavares, Bailey, and Nielsen would prove to be a great nucleus of centers. Add Kyle Okposo, maybe Petrov in the future, Joennsuu, and hopefully some other great draft picks, and the Islanders are looking at some great foundation up front. On defense, too bad we can’t get JT and Hedman, right?

  162. avatar Kai says:

Great stuff CB! Tavares phoning up a blogger to send a message to the fans and media is nothing short of astonishing and really shows that he cares a lot! Cracking stuff John!

  163. avatar Froggy says:

I have been obssessing over the LHP situation for the past few weeks and have not focused on the draft, but the bottom line is that the Islanders NEED to draft this kid.

Btw, it would be great if the Canadian press picked this interview up. They might need to declare a state of emergency in Toronto!

  164. avatar Alex O says:

Awesome article CB, Hopefully Snow and company picks JT.

  165. avatar paul says:

    Tam O’shanter country club, really?
I thought the Isles were trying to impress the kid?

  166. avatar Sec301 says:

CB can u get garth to read your blog

  167. avatar Pete says:

Duchene didn’t even make the World Junior team this year…the very same team that Tavares led to gold, while being named tournament MVP….enough with the nonsense about Duchene as a possible pick.

  168. avatar billy says:

23 more long days until we can draft Tavares! the last few weeks have gone by pretty quickly, so thats good.

But seriously, u only hear about people staying at houses when its serious. Didnt crosby live at mario’s house when he first broke into the league?
You dont give someone that much personal attention if your pick is going somewhere else. Snow is just playing coy but it will be disastrous if we dont get Tavares.
I like hedman and before i thought it would be ok if we ended up with him, but Tavares came out and said he wants to be an islander without being questioned. Thats crazy, everyone else needs to be prompted, but JT wanted us all to know he wants us as well.
Welcome to the islanders JT, may you and Okposo battle it out for the rocket richard trophy one day!!!!!

  169. avatar hopingforthebest says:

obviously this decision is out of the fans hands….but am I the only one that finds it simply unacceptable for them not take him? That would be it for me.

  170. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Ok, now all that’s left is for Snow to announce JT’s name on June 26th and watch the Coliseum erupt into a huge party. I want my daughter to enjoy her first foray into the coliseum and not be scared of riots breaking out. LOL

  171. avatar John Tavares says:

    Please draft me Garth, thanks!

  172. avatar paul says:

I understand the whole to-do being made about Tavares staying at Snow’s house but that may have had something to do with JT traveling to the Island without his parents.
    Just an FYI…

  173. avatar dave chyzowski says:

John Tavares, if you are reading this.. many of us fans have been in agonizing pain for more than 20 years. many of us rememeber the glory days and the parades and stanley cups. we are a very passionate fan base. when we finally had a decent team the coliseum was the loudest arena anywhere. The Islanders have been crying for bona fide hockey players, the fans have been as well. when you come and join us you will be entrenched with the fans and vice versa. LETS BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS.

  174. avatar mike says:

Quit dinking around and announce our first pick already! Tavares is the one. Show this kid the class and respect that he shows us in CB’s interview. Tavares is going to lead this franchise out of oblivion. Anything other than Tavares, then Snow Must Go! Don’t care if we get both Hedman and Duchene. If we don’t take Tavares, this draft is a bust for Snow.

  175. avatar Alex Kinkead says:

Come on Garth bring JT home!

  176. avatar bulldogs7 says:

this is hinting tht garth wants to take jt. wat gm allows a prospect to stay at his house and play golf with him all in the same week.

  177. avatar JTorBUST says:

Draft JT and increase ticket sales 500% or go against your fan base and risk a riot on draft day and witness the end of hockey on Long Island. How many season tickets you think they will sell in the week after announcing JT as the pick as opposed to VH. I am hoping inviting the other two runner ups are just smoke and mirrors for whatever reason or Garth is going after another top 3 pick. Draft JT Garth , no brainer.

  178. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

I always wanted JT the most, but compelling articles about the other2 had me wondering. Now I am SOLD 100% on JT! This phonecall did it. And the fact that he knew to call the best daily NYI blogger shows he is in touch with how to get to us- The FANS! Let us have a good day on June 26th. JT knows what the mission here is all about and he seems to know what we are trying to build and rebuild. Make sure GARTH SNOW reads this post!!!!

  179. avatar Joe says:

    Welcome to NY, John!

If Snow doesn’t draft this kid he should be run out of town.

  180. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

If the NYI draft someone else other than JT, the only thing they could be thinking, is that the fast track to a new arena is to get the Islander fans to destroy NVMC on draft day when they announce any other name as their 1st pick.

  181. avatar mtrico says:

Great article CB! By the way, you need to start following me on Twitter so that you can read all of my witty comments as they come to me. ;)

  182. avatar Valentino says:

We better draft JT or I do the unimaginable. I become a rangers fan.

You dont get lower than that !

    #91 – John Tavares !!!!

  183. avatar Tom Barone says:

Some of you people I don’t understand…sure any of these kids will help the team. THAT’S OBVIOUS. but how long have you been suffering as an islanders fan? I’ve been with them since the early 80′s and I’M TIRED OF LOSING!!!!!!!!!! TIRED OF NOT BEING RESPECTED IN THE NHL BY ANYONE. Not be passionate about this pick and just say…”let Snow do him homework and he will pick who he needs to pick BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!! PICK TAVARES!!!!! If you don’t understand the significance of this pick and what it COULD mean to this team and future as a New York hockey team. You have not been LOSING with us long enough.

  184. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

This kid seems like he has the attitude to really love and embrace the team that drafts him. This article has made me really believe that he could be a future captain and a lifelong islander. In 1983 a team called the Red Wings drafted an 18 year old kid who would never leave the team, captain them to several stanley cups, bleed Detroit red, and have his number retired by the team. That man was, of course, Steve Yzerman. I can see a similar future for John on Long Island. Really seems like that kind of guy from this interview.

  185. avatar Will Teese says:

    JT Fever baby!!!!

Hey CB, i was wondering, cuz not many people mentioned this, but how come tampa would bring in all 3 guys at once, instead of one at a time like the isles did? Which is the way that most teams do it? Because i would assume that teams would prefer one at a time to get to know the player better.

  186. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

I have a fever and the only prescription is more Tavares.

  187. avatar Potential Season Ticket Holder says:

Tom #180- Dead on. Enough is enough….

  188. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

When we get finished with him, he’ll be wearing gold plated diapers!

  189. avatar Rich in BC says:

    I have a few confessions:

I admit I fell for the Canadian media reports about Tavares draft stock falling – I thought he was great in the World Juniors and fully deserved the number one status.

I also admit I’ve never been completely enthralled by him mostly because I live in BC and never get to seem him play.

I also admit I’ve never been an Islanders fan mostly because of Bod Nystrom and Billy Smith plus I’m a Habs fan at heart.

    But…..

    I AM NOW!

That was one of the finest interviews I have ever read from an 18 year old. I want to see Tavares in the Islanders uniform.

I’ll tell you what – this is a kid who gets it.

This is a kid who understands the new NHL from an economic and entertainment point.

This is a kid who understands how a languishing franchise can quickly turn its fortunes around.

This is a kid you can build a franchise around.

This is a kid who has the ability to impact the NHL the same way Sidney Crosby has.

Yes, I just put John Tavares on the same level as Sid the Kid. In my honest opinion, Tavares is very much the same type of player Crosby was at 18 – same style, same type of play, same supposed skating issues.

Pick Tavares, get the new arena and hockey will once again flourish on the Island. The Islansders need only look at the Pittsburgh model to see how to build a young franchise.

    This is awesome!

  193. avatar -Big Van Vader says:

Draft John Tavares and everything begins to change.

I just get this good feeling about him and the future of this franchise when I read stuff like that.

About 6,000 tickets have “sold” through ticketmaster for the draft party. By the time the draft hits it will probably be close to if not “sold out”. Garth COULDN’T let down a whole building of fans, could he?

Oh yeah, if you don’t draft him, Garth, SOMEone is going into the Jumbotron!

  194. avatar cinematic says:

i cannot wait for draft day…
i feel i need a TAVARES jersey too… this interview and the short one he did on tv at the game last night really convinced me…
I still think DUCHENE is going to be outrageously good though…nevertheless, I def. want TAVARES to be an ISLANDER!

  195. avatar Joe87 says:

he wants us…we want him…enough said

  196. avatar Gary Harding says:

It is so nice to hear a great story like this….

John, it would be OUR honor to chant your name in the barn. You would be a breath of fresh air in the cloudy forecast of this franchise over the past few years.

You are a human version of Febreeze!

  197. avatar Isles fan Ken says:

Wow, great interview. After reading that, really how do you not take this kid? Do the right thing Garth or you have put the final nail in the coffin for this franchise. Personally, I really feel it’s that big of a deal. Bring us back to respectability JT!

  198. avatar Marty says:

JT. Nice to see you want to be an Islander. We would love to have you here. Bring a shovel with you, Wang wants one in the ground by October.

  199. avatar Jared says:

There is still that doubt in my mind that they select Victor Hedman. I don’t know what it is, but it’s really bothering me. :(

  200. avatar Spinner9 says:

Justin M, you mentioned next year’s centers as Tavares, Bailey, Nielsson and Park…you forgot about Weight. Someone’s gotta play wing. Park’s done it in the past but would it be a waste to have Nielsson as your 4th line center? Maybe someone else moves to wing and Park center’s the 4th line.

  201. avatar hopingforthebest says:

Riots on draft day if Tavares’s name isn’t called by the Islanders.

  202. avatar Brian G says:

IF they do draft Tavares – all Islanders fans should not expect him to put up 50 goals this year – have some patience.

  203. avatar GilliesKO says:

Was a tour of Flushing/Main Street included in the visit? Wonder if playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium gets his blood pumping too.

  204. avatar isles72 says:

I heard Snowy put on his old illegal gear and said to Johnny

‘lets go downstairs to the basement and have our own nhl combine’

  205. avatar kevin fitz says:

    Spinner,
If the scouting is correct on Tavares, he sounds like more of a winger in the Pro’s than a Center. I could see him on a line with Weight next year to be his mentor.

  206. avatar Dally Mac says:

I think the plan will be for Weight to play the wing on the Tavares line. He’ll be the disher to the sniper. That way Tavares doesn’t have to take all the key draws in his own end in the early stages of his career too. Weight can step in and take a few. Personally I think Tavares would be way better as an NHL winger anyhow. Time will tell. Scorers are usually on the wings, and dishers in the middle.

  207. avatar Eric says:

Well said Brian G#200. Tavares will probably score 20-25 goals this year. Patience, Patience he will only be a rookie.

  208. avatar Jared says:

    #263 Isles 72:

    lol! That’s f’n classic!

Although, he could have just put on the pads and cuddled with the boy.

  209. avatar Carmine says:

OK I was in the Hedman camp until about 10 minutes ago. The last line of the article almost made me shed a tear. June 26 can’t get here fast enough.

  210. avatar isles08 says:

I hope this article gets recognized by the mainstream media, as well as the response by islander fans in these comments….we should post links to this on places like TSN, NHL.com, ESPN, etc.

  211. avatar savetheisles.webs.com says:

I remember a few years ago hearing about this kid.
I dreamed of having the #1 pick and drafting him. I thought it could never happen, the isles getting the #1 pick

But this looks like a reality now.

I cnt wait see you all june 26th

  212. avatar Crackhead Theo says:

I would be very content if Tavares has a Stamkos type of year, points wise. Then the following year he rips it up. I expect big things from Okpose next season more so than Tavares.

CB, any ramblings floating around the NHL in regards to Komisarek? Would be great if we picked him up via UFA. Then that would be 2 years in a row that we gink a solid Dman from the Habs.

  213. avatar Akeem says:

To the posters here who wondered why Tavares didn’t meet with DP, and to those who lauded that move:
DP is a 27 year old goalie. Weight is a center pushing 40, someone who plays the same position as JT and was making All-star teams when JT was still in diapers. I’m not saying that DP wouldn’t have been an effective spokesman, nor am I saying that Doug Weight is a better player today than Rick Dipietro is, but of the two, which would you choose?

  214. avatar Potential Season Ticket Holder says:

You know DP will be very jealous of all the attention JT will get if they draft him.

  215. avatar kreatiiv says:

i love it! the kid sounds like he not only wants to be an islander, but is overwhelmed with long island itself… which to be honest isnt hard to do. i live in california now and came out with my LA born wife this past december…. a girl that grew up in 90210 territory and she was blown away by the beauty and the homes and the properties and the open spaces…. as a transplant far away, i can appreciate the things long island has that really are nowhere else. like the tam golf club…. which is also personal to me as well, since i not only had my bar mitzvah there, but also put my car onto the 18th green, straight through a telephone pole and the fence that lines the golf course, coming from route 107 when i was 18 and destroying a pontiac sunbird, the 18th green, and my sister’s nose in the process lol

aside from that, it sounds like they gave JT much more of a royal treatment than the other two… much more personal and much deeper. i think thats a great sign that they had him in mind the whole time.

  216. avatar kevin says:

this is awsome! greatest news since we won the lottery. great to hear this. extremeley awsome and i cant put it into words

  217. avatar Jesse D (aka jessedlovesnyi) says:

Awesome. Freakin’ awesome! I hope Snow gets his hands on this. I mean, JT stayed in his house and played golf with him. Garth has to pick him!

  218. avatar Isle_in_LA says:

Tam is where the Isles held their golf outing last year. DP was a member too (I think he switched clubs recently). I was a caddy there about 7 years ago…

  219. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

I really find it hard to believe that the Isles are having a draft party and would do anything but draft this kid. If they are in touch with their fan base (hopefully they are) then it is a no brainer. This kid has to be on the roster opening night. Imagine the adrenaline going through this kid’s body if there are 16,234 chanting his name in unison before the first puck drop – JOHN TA-VAR-ES, JOHN TA-VAR-ES!!!

  220. avatar Pete says:

CB, Excellent interview. I think JT is just what the Isles needed. I’m excited for the Islanders to Draft him. Like I said I met Hedman and while he is tall he needs to fill in. Tavares has scored and taken his licks. He is the man for the Islanders.

  221. avatar Jason says:

I swear to god I almost cried reading this. We need a player like him SO bad.

  222. avatar Coral Springs Isle Fan says:

Awesome article! I am so psyched, I wish the draft was tonight! Go get Tavares Garth! Hear the voice of the fans and get the goal scorer.

  223. avatar Chris Mc says:

I have a fever and the only prescription is more Tavares

    ——————————————

Sumo I just wet my pants. Thanks for the laugh.

After re-reading the Hedman and Tavares interviews, Hedman was a down to earth kid who said all the right things, but didn’t JT just seem like he was passionate about wearing the Islanders sweater?

  224. avatar James C says:

    Awesome. Very encouraging.

I want to draft him, sign him and invite him over for dinner.

  225. avatar IsleofNJ says:

I’d be doing myself and all of you a disservice if I didn’t play the hell out of this TAVARES bell !
I GOTTA HAVE MORE TAVARES BELL BABY !

  226. avatar Booten says:

CB, you never disappoint with the amount of quality reading on this site…couldn’t have been more happier reading that convo. See you guys at the draft party!

  227. avatar Jethro09 says:

I don’t know if this was JT or his agent talking, but its all I need to hear. He wants to be an Islander, the Islanders need a star. He’s the best talent available in the draft. Enough said. Draft Tavares!

  228. avatar cody says:

CB- If you had any way of swaying the isles brass, it was posting this article. If there was any chance of there not being a full scale riot outside the NVMC it was if they pitched it as “he didnt wanna be hear”. This got me real excited, especially the Doug Weight part. I was so worried after the hedman article that they told hedmans agent “yea tell Botta what happened”. But now i dont see how they have any other choice.

  229. avatar bionicman99 says:

I just got a warm & fuzzy feeling inside.
    #222 Love that! Aces!

  230. avatar JTBABY says:

how could they even think about drafting someone else????? John Tavares has us Islander fans excited like we haven’t been in a loooooong ass time.

  231. avatar german islesfan says:

i have a big smile on my face. john tavares made my day perfect.

  232. avatar Barry says:

Jt met with Doug Weight as opposed to Dipietro because he wil actually see more ice time than band aid boy.

On a serious note: I’d like to say how wonderful of a job Mr. Botta has done with this site. It’s pleasure to have him connected with the Islanders and it’s fans.

Hopefully this piece about Tavares will dispell any notions that some in the media have been spewing about him. Here’s hoping Garth does the right thing and takes Tavares with the pick.

  233. avatar b-ri says:

this kid NEEDS to play for us. I think he will, and everyone knows that. But by the team not showing their cards they have had the spotlight on them from April 15 and it will shine on them until they finally make that pick. 5,000 people want to go to the draft party after a week. We might have a better turnout for the draft party than we would for a game. They are creating excitement and I look forward to Hearing John Tavares, London Knights immediately after hearing with the first pick in the draft the islanders select, and then hearing how we are going in the right direction with Kyle, Josh, our other young players and hopefully a healthy and allstar caliber Rick DiPietro

  234. avatar JTBABY says:

someone should print out this page of comments and mail it to Snow and Wang.

  235. avatar John G. says:

Ive got a big dumb smile a watery eyes from that interview. JT all the way.I cant wait for the draft party

  236. CB, you must have felt like Santa on Christmas morning just before hitting the “Publish Post” button on this story. Delivering a gift to Islanders fans all across the world. Did you publish the full interview? If there’s more, given the obvious Tavares-mania, you should provide the full transcript.

  237. avatar Nick says:

This was one of the best articles I think I may have ever read…seriously. I bought the NHL package and rooted for the Isles to lose all season (I live in Seattle), I lost sleep at night between the end of the season and the lottery, this kid is the clear-cut choice. Sounds like a very mature guy. The Isles sound like they handled it right. This MUST BE THE PICK!!! Has there ever been an easier decision for us to make? Simply put, you can build a solid blue line through later picks in the draft and FA (see: Streit), but we will never be in a position to sign an offensive player like Tavares unless it’s through the draft. Hedman can be a HOFer for all I care, the pick is still Tavares. Let’s be clear…this guy will score upwards of 50 goals a year, definitely 40+, he will help Okposo become a 40+ guy, he will have a ripple affect throughout the entire roster (see: Crosby, Ovechkin, ect), he will help get the Lighthouse Project approved, HE WILL RESURRECT THE FRANCHISE!!! There is nothing I would like more than to roll into MSG with JT over the next decade…and kick the Rangers ass like we did back in the day!!! It’s time to once again take over the City…and in time…the NHL!!! I’m so excited I feel like a little boy on Christmas morning.
The 26th can’t get hear soon enough.

  238. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

233, you sound like a junkie all tweaking out for more JT!

  239. avatar pablo says:

Great Attitude! He Stressed the fact that he wants to be an Islander.
Now get out there Garth Snow and claim your man “John Tavares” and put this to rest.
I’ll tell you this, after hearing his strong feelings for the Islanders i think the Islander nation will be Pissed Off if Snow takes anybody other than TAVARES.

  240. avatar Nick says:

With the first pick in the 2009 entry draft, the New York Islanders are proud to select…from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, center John Tavares!!!

  241. avatar JTalltheway says:

I’d rather find out my gf is cheating on me than have Tavares go to another team.

  242. avatar Zeike says:

Good kid, great hockey player. Still believe he has to be the pick and glad to hear he is as excited about it as we are.

  243. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

This excitement in Islanders Country is the whip! I feel the wins, the respect, and the legitimacy comming that leads to the Stanley Cup. Look at the surges due to youngs guns like Tavares in Chicago, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Columbus recently. It’s our turn! PS I am also a part time Jackets fan and just rode that long road to the 1st playoffs in 8 years! Let’s go Isles! Make the ONLY OBVIOUS CHOICE on 6/26. If this interview doesn’t seal the deal than nothing will. I hope Isles brass understands the signifcance of this pick and this young man!

  244. avatar Jeff says:

Let’s just make this kid an Islander and start the season.

  245. avatar Andy says:

    Ich bin ein Tavareser!

  246. avatar jon says:

I’d feel great if I didn’t think the Isles would find some way to screw this up and pick someone beside Tavares.

  247. avatar Jeff says:

Is anyone concerned that the Isles couldn’t swing for the GCH and had him stay at Snow’s house?

  248. avatar Joe says:

I wish I could go to the Draft Party, but I will be in AC for my bro’s bachelor party. I would be there will all of you chanting JT. The only thing that sucks is when I watch it in a sports bar they wont have sound, so it will take 5 seconds later then announced until I find out who they draft(that sucks) I will be holding my breath and hope when the screen turns to a person, that person will be John Tavares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  249. avatar dave chyzowski says:

Chris Botta BING!!! you nailed it.

  250. avatar ron says:

I just read Reebok is closing in on an endorsement deal with the young gun for years to come. The Isles will be getting tons of publicity…and not the bad kind, either.

  251. avatar Steve says:

Great post, Chris! JT is the one and we welcome him with open arms. This kid has been in a pressure cooker for years and thrives. The Stanley Cup is born and bred into him.

  252. avatar felix says:

bachelor party in AC over draft party anyday trust me.

  253. avatar BC says:

What I think strikes me most about this conversation is that he called CB himself. His statements show that he truly wants to be an Islander. Other players might make such statements to save themselves from looking like selfish kids, however John I feel truly wants to be an Islander. Obviously this conversation hasn’t reached the masses, and again proves he called CB to talk to the fans personally, rather than to be headline news on TSN.

John has proved to not only be a fantastic hockey player, but has great character as well. I think his character would attract even more fans after showing how dedicated he is to the New York Islanders

  254. avatar JTalltheway says:

i think its funny how not one single comment on this thread is saying ‘good kid, but I still like Hedman’

  255. 243, i remember reading a couple of years ago about ovechkin living at the caps’ GM’s house for an extended period of time when he first came to the US. i dont think it’s out of the ordinary one bit.

  256. avatar BC says:

I also think that this proves that CB still has a strong connection to the Islanders organization, so anyone who believes he is making up random assupptions should just read this article. Tavares obviously had learned about CB and knew how closely he is tied to the fan base.

  257. avatar Joe says:

felix #246, Of course Bachelor Party, but the main event of it isnt until Saturday night.

  258. avatar Staten Islander says:

add me to the list of fans that want him drafted.

  259. avatar pete DeBenedetto says:

I just waiting to see if the TSN web page will quote CB’s regarding Tavares…..I’d like to see all of those silly writers explain this one to the Toronto fan base.

  260. avatar Valentino says:

    you didnt hear??

    she is cheating on you…lol

  261. avatar Irish Isle says:

The interview put a smile on my face, a tear of joy in my eye, and I am going to rush home from work just to re-read

  262. avatar Blizzard says:

Its a good bet that Tavares will have his name on the Stanley cup sooner or later……

  263. avatar felix says:

#249 the main event should be both nights

  264. avatar JTorBUST says:

The penquins sold approx 161,000 more home tickets in Crosby’s rookie season, not to mention merchandise and nationally televised games. The Isles will have more sellouts this year than they have had in the last 20 years buy making the right choice here. From a business standpoint I can’t see how it would be possible for them to pass on this golden goose and his ability or turn this franchise into a profitable organization. Not to mention that the kid has heart and can be the face of our franchise for the next 15 years. We are going to fill the NVMC for a draft party , we could’nt do that for a regular season game last 10 years.

  265. avatar Billy O says:

I think the Islanders should do everything possible to get Tavares and Hedman w/o moving the youngsters.

On a seperate note: Chris, the work you do is amazing and all us fans are in your debt.

  266. avatar Tom Barone says:

Seriously, when was the last time there was this much excitement around this team. I could care less what building we play in now, just get him on the ice and SADDLE UP!

  267. avatar therain93 -- terrier fan says:

So, I think the islanders just need to take both tavares and hedman. They need to figure out a deal for the second overall pick that includes their first round pick from next year, a few picks from this year and a player or two, even if it includes streit whose value should be pretty high right now. it must happen ( ‘ :

  268. avatar mike says:

#260 Hey Billy O: Keep dreaming with your comment that Isles should do everything possible to get both Hedman and Tavares without moving youngsters. And I should go to Joe’s (#244) brother’s bachelor party in AC and do everything possible to get 10 lap dances without spending more than 5 bucks. While your at it, the Isles should get Tavares and Hedman, and trade for Crosby without giving up youngsters. If you are going to dream, dream big.

  269. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Oh Come On!!!!! Does it get any better?

That was just an outstanding DEEP and INSIGHTFUL look into John Tavares’ professional attitude … and even the hospitality the Isles have shown JT.

I think and hope that the Isles are drafting John 1st OVERALL!! He’s already got that Islander attitude and edge.

Rookie Camp at Ice Works is going to be ridiculous … can’t wait to go … can’t wait till the draft party … Can’t wait to see Kate Murray in her #91 Tavares Islander Sweater digging into the dirt with Charles and the Gang in the Fall of 2010.

  270. avatar the real JD says:

We want JT to be an Islander and he wants to be an Islander. Hallelujah!!!!!
Welcome to NY buddy, we’re behind you 110%.
    Post 237 – hysterical!

  271. avatar Jerky says:

You can see the passion JT has for the sport and in being part of this rebuilding team in both his televised interviews and from his comments in the phone interview with CB. He’s going to be fun to watch!

  272. avatar dalcy says:

you know Hedman reads this site. imagine the “fan-pressure” he will feel if the isles draft him

  273. avatar mike says:

Here is my prediction: In 10 years, whenever some idiot loudly whistles that silly song at the Garden, after the last three notes, the whole building erupts “JT Sucks”. Potvin’s name will be forgotten by Rangers fans, replaced by the ultra-nemesis JT. By then, JT will have scored more times on Henrik than the entire NHL has scored on Avery’s ex’s.

  274. avatar isles99 says:

if a tavares interview got you 300 comments, what might the isles drafting JT get?…..

  275. avatar mike says:

    Snow DON’T F*** this up!
JT, Okposo and Bailey this team would be fun to watch.

  276. avatar BSliggity says:

Clearly none of you have watched this kid play enough! He will be a good NHL player, but will never be a Crosby, Thornton, or even Marc Savard! He is fragile, he skates with his melon down, and his “passion” is seen every time he whines about missing a scoring chance…or when he smacks his stick on the ice because the coach is taking off after a minute and a half on the PP! My prediction — a few ‘decent’ years before injuries plague is career. He’ll be perfect for the Island! A broken talent for a totally f-ed up franchise!

    Enjoy, New York!

  277. avatar Hale says:

to post 277….right cause the 3 years of watching him play junior makes you an expert…trust the scouts..they have him at number one..no one is saying he is crosby….and its not 87 whines or any nhl superstar is looking for a call or taking a long shift..

  278. avatar Mikey says:

I can’t wait to see this place when we draft Hedman. The armchair GMs around here are going to explode. Why is everyone so flattered that JT said he wants to be an Islander? Are you surprised? Who wouldn’t want to be a number one pick and play in NY? Hedman essentially said the same thing. Both of these guys want to go number one, be part of a rebuilding program, and earn the maximum bonus on the entry level deal. JT is a great offensive talent, but some of you are acting like he’ll be an all-start next year. They’ve been talking about his skating and defensive deficiencies for years, and he still has more work to do on that front. If the Isles brass doesn’t think he has the drive and work ethic to become a three zone player, then he shouldn’t be the pick. Only they can make that determination. I’ll welcome the guy with open arms if he’s the pick, but I don’t think it’s a no-brainer.

  279. avatar BillyIsle says:

So he spent TWO days on LI and stayed at the Gm’s house. Hedman stayed a day and stayed at a hotel, but he was with his father too. Todays Newsday mentioned Garth not wanting to trade down. Take all of these clues and what do you get?–Agita until June 26th.

  280. avatar Jason says:

Well I’ve made up my mind. John Tavares is not only an excellent player but is obviously mature beyond his years. His attitude reminds me a lot of Josh Baileys. Great head on his shoulders and it’s awesome to see him set the record straight. He wants us and we want him so I really hope Snow pulls the trigger on the 26th and makes JT the #1 pick for the Isles. Blown away to hear Garth actually had John stay at his house. Garth is really starting to grow on me.

  281. avatar Jim says:

    He wants to be her
    We want him here
Hopefully Garth wants him to and . . .
with the first selection in the 2009 NHL draft the Islanders take . . . John Tavares

  282. avatar Anthony says:

BOTTA, anychance that we here at PB can publish an article in the toronto sun and globe and mail? and post JT’s quote that he wants to be an ISLANDER? that would be great….

  283. avatar kreatiiv says:

i dont know if anyone caught this article at the edmonton sun, but it sums up why burke is still so active in trying to get tavares and why we will pick him in the end regardless of how duchene or hedman have “moved up in the ranks…”

    —–

That hasn’t dampened Burke’s enthusiasm for Tavares.

“There’s some whispers of (him falling),” said Burke. “But I don’t know why you would drop a kid if he has a tough playoff. You get a 17-year-old, and let’s say his girlfriend breaks up with him, that could make him go in the toilet for a month.

“For a guy to have to a tough week or two, or a tough playoff series, if that makes other teams drop him, then I say good.”

burke is desperate to get this kid for the same reasons we cant afford not to draft him…. he will put the puck in the net over and over and over and over and over…..

this kid has been the target #1 of this years draft since he was 14 yrs old and no player that came on the scene in the past year or so is going to change that.

  284. avatar Anthony says:

that would be great retaliation for burke opening his fat mouth

  285. avatar Joe fred va says:

Did Snow make waffles for JT too?? Any event, great post Chris! I think the fans feel this kids passion, they like it!! You cannot blame us long suffering fans for liking a kid who can score and has the passion to win!I am now 75% the Isles will take him #1, especially with him meeting Weight. That will be his mentor on the ice.

  286. avatar OlTimeHockey says:

Wow, almost 300 comments on a simple Q&A on JT wanting to play for the Islanders.

Looks like the interest generated by “closed lips” has done the organization well this long off season.

Hats off to the management team for sustaining the buzz. The roof on the NVMC will be blown off from the cheers from draft day fans when Snow picks JT numero uno!!!

  287. avatar Shane from Nova Scotia says:

I have been reading POINTBLANK for two months now. I am a Canadian and every bit as much of a fan of The New York Islanders as any of you. Please don’t refer to the Canadian Media as much as you refer to the “Toronto” media. I love this team and look forward to the drafting of John Tavares. John Tavares broke Wayne Gretzky’s scoring record in the OHL. He is not Wayne Gretzky. Who Is? The OHL is the cream of Canadian junior Hockey. Mike Bossy was not the greatest skater. Who cares? He was the greatest pure goal scorer in HOCKEY history. I have lived and died with this team since 1977. Take Tavares. He was the MVP of the World Junior Championship. I can tell you, as a kid from Canada, the Stanley Cup is the stuff that dreams are made of. We all hold it above our heads at our road hockey Championships. If Snow takes anybody but John Tavares, I’m done. I can absolutely forgive him if it doesn’t turn out. TAKE TAVARES!

  288. avatar Neil says:

There’s a famous story of Peyton Manning, on the occasion of his last meeting with Colts GM Bill Polian before the 1998 NFL Draft, after all the niceties were finished, getting right in his face saying “you better ^&*(&$$#@ pick me no.1 or I will make you *^%*(%$& regret it every chance I get.” I think Johnny Fever just threw down the same sort of statement to Garth with this interview.
You know, I always felt it was actually Toronto JT had no interest in playing for. This guy has had the TO media up his rear end since he was 12. I think a popular but out-of-the-way team was what Tavares wanted all along.

  289. avatar Thomas32 says:

An absolute NO BRAINER here!!!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEESE Garth , for all in the name of thats holy , PLEASE draft John Tavares!!! I don’t think I can stand another dissapointment. Ive been a season tix holder since 1992 , and I know there are ALOT longer tix holders on here that WANT to see JT in an Islanders uniform for many years to come. No doubt Hedman , Duchene, Kane, etc , are ALL gonna be great players. We haven’t seen a talent like JT be available for the Isles to take since Pat LaFontaine! Lets face it! This is gonna be the turning point for this team , I feel it. It HAS to start here! Please make the right decision for the team and your loyalist fans!! JT , JT , JT , JT!!!!

  290. avatar Shane from Nova Scotia says:

Dear BSliggity. Find somewhere else to whine about you not having the 1St pick. This BLOG is for Islander fans. Not even the RAGS money can buy them JT. Or is it the Maple LEAFS? What was it like, winning the Cup in Black and White? Loser. Capital L.

  291. avatar goowy says:

    THANKS FOR CALLING JOHN.
    ISLANDERS’ FANS AWAIT YOU.

    WHAT A GREAT DAY.

  292. avatar MickeyBoy7 says:

It’s such a pleasure having a Doug Weight on our team.

  293. avatar Bossman says:

Raise that jersey to the rafters right now!

Just joking, but boy Am I glad.

  294. avatar Bossman says:

    Hey Garth,

Just tell the world you’re going to draft him so John doesn’t have to make the trip to the tan bed of hockey in Tampa Bay

  295. avatar beaker says:

    # 278, what do defensive deficiencies have to do with putting up points? were not drafting him for his defense. we already have foawrds who can do that, we need a scorer, considering our leading scorer put up 18.

  296. avatar pat devlin says:

WOW it made my day during a boring class reading this

  297. avatar Paul says:

    As always Great Job CB!
The Kid has Broken records his whole hockey career so far and now………..he’ll hopefully do it on the Islanders.

  298. avatar Irish Isle says:

Just want to say if I was a 16 year old girl I would have the first picture on my wall

  299. avatar isles316 says:

Great Job CB getting the inside stuff once again. I really hope they take JT. As others have said, if it doesn’t work out, no one can fault Snow. We all want him too.

  300. avatar jt91 says:

After this, its no longer a three horse race. We’ve got a runaway winner here!
When JT says “Even before I visited with the Islanders and got to know the owner and the GM, there was never an issue. Now that I’ve gotten to know what the franchise is about, I feel even stronger about it. I want to be part of them rebuilding into a contender. I want to be part of a Stanley Cup team there. I want to be an Islander.” he means it.
Garth is a true master, whatever he said and did to turn this kid into a lover of not just the area but the franchise also is nothing short of magic. PS I’ve got even more tremendous respect for Doug W after hearing this. Captaincy anyone?

  301. avatar geduffer says:

Billy (#168)-You’re right. Crosby lived with Mario when he broke in and still does.

  302. avatar hathead68 says:

This was absolutely FANTASTIC to read. Now there can be no doubt, JT has tremendous character to go along with tremendous hockey skills. The fact that he wanted to stress to Islander fans that he would consider it an honor and WANTS TO BE AN ISLANDER says it all. This decision is a no-brainer if ever there was one. How can Garth NOT pick him? I was a little nervous reading Point Blank over the past few days, but I sure feel amazing now. All due respect to Hedman, a nice guy and hopefully a good career, but Tavares has to become a Islander with the 1st overall pick.

  303. avatar IslanderNation says:

A lot of credit should go to Tavares here for initiating the call with CB. I thought that was a class act. As some previous posters have mentioned, I liked the idea of the Isles drafting Tavares but I was also unsure about his commitment and whether he would bolt Long Island after his first contract. This answered a lot of questions.

  304. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

no brainer. just lost in my game an hour ago, we were down by 6 goals, tied it up and lost by 1… and I come home to read this! cheered up my whole night! THIS STUFF IS GOLD, CB! GOLD I TELL YA!

  305. avatar Jim Clark says:

Nice job by a guy like Doug Weight near the end of his career to meet with Tavares.
Also for Snow to have him at his house for his visit. Now if Tavares can only use his charm on Kate Murray to build the Lighthouse

  306. avatar season tix holder says:

No more worries about Tavares. Just draft him! I’ll keep my season tix for another 35 years!

  307. avatar Bob says:

Great interview CB. I don’t think there’s a question in any Islander fan’s mind about who we should draft 1st. Now it’s up to Snow and Wang to deliver the goods. Welcome to Long Island JT!

  308. avatar MJS says:

Class move having him meet Doug Weight. By the way, this Weight might be the new captain? I feel good about that interview. the interviews with these players have been matching up with what I’ve heard about them. But, so far, so good. At this point I couldn’t decide which player to choose. The second the Isles pick one, I think I’m going to wish they had picked the other. In the end though, I think I’m hoping for Tavarez. Good interview there CB.

  309. avatar Adam Cohen says:

For those of you fans who will backlash against the Islanders should Snow pick Hedman over Tavares need come down off your high horse. The Islanders need a defenseman like Hedman just as much as they need a forward like Tavares; heck they could even use a center like Duchene as well. If you were willing to put your faith in Jankowski after last year’s draft (a good one by all accounts), then you should be ok with the #1 pick becoming Hedman.

I have made it absolutely clear I prefer Hedman over Tavares having watched both players in more than just the WJC. This is not mind you because I think Tavares is a bad player, far from it. I just believe that hedman will not only be the better player long term, but have immediate impact on reducing goals against something the Islanders desperately need if Ricky continues to be injured.

That being said, I, for one, will not be the least disappointed if Tavares is selected or Duchene for that matter. I would not be miffed either if Snow pulls off the unthinkable and gets the #2 and 3 picks getting combo of Hedman, Duchene and Tavares.

Snow must not and should not make a pick just because 80% of the fans want it. He has to make the pick that best puts the team in position for long term success. If it’s Tavares, it’s Tavares. If it’s Hedman, it’s Hedman. No one should be upset with one over the other.

  310. I love how us Islander fans were chanting a players name we love that’s not even on the ice…..let alone in NY during the last home game, last year. Classic.

  311. avatar Vukota says:

A part of me wants to see the Isles take Hedman just to see the draft party turn into a youtube classic

  312. avatar isles316 says:

I just hope that if the Isles take Hedman, we don’t bash the poor kid because we all wanted JT.

  313. avatar JAS says:

Thanks CB for the interview, awesome read!

I’ve been telling people from the beginning of the season I was hoping for a last place finish and a shot to get this kid. It’s great to read he really wants to be here. Already have my tickets for the draft party and the place will go nuts when they call his name!

Can you imagine how loud opening night will be introducing Tavares. I don’t think there’s another city in the league that will be as loud as us. JT you will feel welcomed! Just play hard and leave it on the ice every game and Long Island will love you.

Gonna go watch my favorite Tavaras goal from WJC against USA on youtube. Will be nice to hear TAVARES AGAIN!! as he’s racking up goals for the Isles. Don’t screw it up Garth!

  314. avatar Drew says:

I hope the media and fans in other cities don’t turn on him the way the did with Sid, I’d hate to see a kid with the same kind of passion get spit on again.

  315. avatar James says:

Unless the Isles trade out of the top three for a package of picks, there is no way they can lose with whomever they select.

I like both Hedman and Tavares a lot. I’d probably opt for Tavares over Hedman, if only because in the new NHL, it still takes the same amount of [longer] time for defenseman to develop… meaning right around the time Hedman becomes a true impact player, he hits free agency.

  316. avatar Long Suffering says:

BSliggity (276) — take your BS back to Toronto…sour grapes because Toronto has no chance of getting him. I just read the interview for the 3rd time today…not afraid to admit that my eyes welled up each time. I’d like to repeat some others have said on this board, because it is so appropriate. First, JT thank you for the call and reaching out to the fans. Second, it would be an absolute honor to welcome you into the community and cheer for you on the ice. Not long before we hear…With the first pick in the 2009 entry draft, the New York Islanders are proud to select…from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, center John Tavares!!! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT! JT!

  317. avatar Brian B says:

CB…you didn’t give any thoughts on your interview…

Does this change anything? How do you feel about the kid now that you spoke to him? Do you think he shouldn’t have said this?

Personally, I don’t think he would have made a statement like this if he had any doubt in his mind that he wouldn’t go first overall. What do you think?

  318. avatar janne niinimaa says:

doug weight goes straight from retirement to coaching the islanders in ’10-’11

  319. avatar L.J. says:

    Great interview CB!

  320. avatar Chris M says:

Tavares is a great player and I would love to have him on board for that reason alone. But consider this: this interview has generated 320 posts- 320!- on a Wednesday night in June on a blog page of the worst team in hockey. The adrenaline shot of excitement he would bring to this franchise cannot be underestimated.

  321. avatar first place isles says:

    great job CB
    CAN’T @#%*? WAIT
    thanks doug

  322. avatar Jon says:

wow, three great kids that all seem they want to play here. what a professional mr. weight is…. cant wait to see what happens. i say trade everyone except streight, weight, kyle and baily and somehow get all 3 picks haha.

  323. avatar JAS says:

The Isles should draft Tavares and then land their franchise Defenseman via free agency July 1st. Why wait 4-5 yrs for Hedman.

Jay Boumeester is today where you hope Hedman will be in 5 years. A 15G 45P+ All-Star defenseman. Boumeester is only 25 yrs old and hits free agency July 1st. Similar size 6′ 4″ 215lbs and pedigree, drafted 3rd overall in 2002.

If we want defense throw a large contract offer at this guy, 8 yrs, 7 million per. Make a trade at the draft to aquire his rights early to get a jump on negotiations. He’s only 25 and entering the prime of his career for the next decade. We have tons of cap space where alot of playoff teams don’t. Plus the isles talent level is getting very good with adding Tavares and I think will look much more attactive for free agents that are looking for an up and coming team.

Right money + right young talent + strong desire to win by mgmt will overide our crappy facility we always hear as the main reason we can sign a top free agent.

Now go impress us Garth and bring in Tavares and Boumeester!

  324. avatar KBulger says:

    He had me at hello.

  325. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

We know the details of Hedman’s visit … and a lil less about Duchene … I wonder if Matt had the same Royal Treatment as Johnny T?

I have a feeling that Snow is leaning heavy JT … just a hunch. :)

  326. avatar savetheisles.webs.com says:

You become a ranger fan cmon.

I would never do that . That’s not a real fan right there

  327. avatar Netminder39 says:

Great post CB, truly one of the best I have read from you.

Nice to read that the smoke has cleared, and Tavares knows whats going on here, and wants to be a part of this. The Islanders can only go up from here.

  328. avatar Tim says:

    Heeeeeeere’s Johnny!!

  329. avatar Andrew in NJ says:

This is the best article I have ever read on IPB. This made me so happy!

  330. avatar Ray says:

Theres a story going around that is saying that JT was a tad bit misquoted. I dont think I can give out the link here but it was written by a guy named Jon Jordan. Look it up. [

  331. avatar doc says:

No matter how good either Hedman or Duschene become…

Watching Tavares score 30, 40 or even 50 goals a year for another team would be unbearable to watch.

    The only choice is Tavares.

  332. avatar doc says:

I don’t think Tavares was misquoted. In his interview with Jordan… he’s simply stating that if he’s not drafted by the Islanders… he’ll be just as happy to go to a team like Tampa Bay. Nothing wrong with that… what was he supposed to say? I wouldn’t be happy going to Tampa Bay???

  333. avatar JUNE 26TH says:

Let’s be honest. JT wants to go first overall. Regardless of the team picking 1. And you know what?? Who cares!!!!!!!! Pick that SOB Snow….

  334. avatar Jamerson says:

Ray (330), I think what happened is that members of the Lightning media cited this interview of JT saying that he wants to be an Islander, and he had to backtrack so that he wouldn’t offend the Lightning if he ends up being drafted by them. In other words, he wasn’t misquoted. He’s just in an awkward spot.

  335. avatar Ajax says:

If anyone can answer this backed by a link, I would appreciate it .. Is there any kind of incentive for the number one pick? Either with money, bonus or contract? Or anything else for that matter? Just thinking, JT may just want to go #1, with any team that has it, for now … that is us.

  336. avatar JZimm says:

For me, happiness is taking Tavares with the first pick and Ryan Ellis with the 2nd 1st round pick. Offense wins.

  337. avatar Billy says:

Lets keep the thread going till we hit 1,0000 comments! This is one way to have our voices heard!!

    JOHN TAVARES+LIGHTHOUSE=HOPE……..
    YES WE CAN!
    YES WE CAN!
    YES WE CAN!
    YES WE CAN!

  338. avatar john from merrick says:

Great job Chris. For the first time I think the isles will take JT. I really hope so. Maybe we are really turning the corner now, JT and know Murray is finally metting with Wang and trying to clear the air about not being pro lighthouse. Crossing my fingers.

  339. avatar Isles6 says:

    19 in 22,

Whether Snow is leaning that way or not, he should be. If there were any doubts in my mind (and there really weren’t) when this blog had the quote from the NHL CSB director saying, that Tavares is already as good as anyone in the NHL from the face-off circles down, it became one of the absolute no-brainers of all time. On so many levels they have to take Tavares.

  340. avatar CJCB says:

How AWESOME would it be if we get Tavares and the agreement for the Lighthouse done by the END of the YEAR. Come on WANG, SNOW, & MURRAY? GET IT DONE!!!!!!

  341. avatar gary9-19-22 says:

#320 Chris – RIGHT ON BROTHER!!!!

I have been saying for a while that we MUST, HAVE NO COICE, ESSENTIAL, to take JT first.

Ignite the fan base, get attention on the team and from the league.

How bad would it be for the NHL to have its next rising star in NY move because of an arena.

The league has so much bad press they need NY, CHI, BOS, LA teams to do well. Yes, for the sake of the league the Rags need to be good as well.

JT on the Isles will generate sell outs, increased TV ratings.

Look at this post… frig’n #337!!!! As chris said, June, worst team… Unbeleivable

  342. avatar Bill From Oceanside says:

    TAVERES !!
    TAVERES !!
    TAVERES !!

    ARE YOU LISTENING, GARTH?

  343. avatar Smitty says:

    Ray(330):

No misquote, JT just explained the reasoning behind telling PB about how happy he would be to play for the Islanders. He said he would also feel the same way if he is chosen by TB, although he does say he wants to be first overall.

  344. avatar Valentino says:

Prediction – close to 10,000 rabid fans show up at the coliseum for the draft party expecting to hear JT’s name get called by the Islanders.

If the Isles go a different avenue, you will see the biggest mutiny by the fans you can imagine.

Heres a fun question, If the Isles dont pick JT, Who would be hated more, Garth Snow or Kate Murray?

  345. avatar MULLER9 says:

There are going to be VERY upset Isles fans come June 26th when we dont select JOHN TAVARES……..just like last year we all had Filatov an Isles and he was even open for us to draft him and we passed…..now the same will happen with JT…Matt Duchene will be the pick.

  346. avatar Peanve says:

Awesome post CB! Can we look forward to a doug weight interview next? I’m eager to know how those two got along – and im sure its famously.

  347. avatar -Big Van Vader says:

    “Make it so.” -Jean-Luc Picard

  348. avatar JAM says:

Who in the hell is John Tavares?
    I’ve never herd of him.

    Just kidding. Pick him.

  349. avatar Alex O says:

I hate to say it but if the differerence is marginal between the 3 acording to the scouts (3 horse race) why wouldnt you take JT and makes the fans happy…..

  350. avatar coral springs isle fan says:

I would say that if JT stayed at Garth’s house for two nights as a guest then he must be on the top of the list for the Isles to draft. And unless JT assaulted Garth’s dog or left the toilet seat up so his wife got a cold rim then I think it is safe to assume that JT will be the pick and probably has been the choice for some time now. Another day closer.

DP I’m sure will have more of a leadership role once JT is drafted. I’m sure DP learned a lot along the way having been a former #1 draft pick. And I’m sure being able to share that with JT will be helpful in the development process.

  351. avatar Ray says:

Thanks for the clarification on that guys. I think (334) said it best by saying “he’s just in an awkward spot.”

  352. avatar Robby D says:

    I hope Garth reads PB!

  353. avatar Gillies Goring says:

I hate to see the Isles painted into a corner by public sentiment. This is great about Tavares.. really, it is. But I honestly feel they can’t lose by drafting within the Tavheduch bracket. Do I want Tavares? Yeah, I do – he’s still my first choice. But I don’t think I’d feel outraged if Snow goes Hedman or Duchene.

  354. avatar steveO says:

theres already 6,700 tickets given out…can we break the ten thousand mark, or possibly have a sell out and rock the roof off when Garth says “The New York Islanders select first round, first overall John TAVARES” then the sold out coliseum crowd goes crazy and the roof starts falling on people….Garth Snow walks back to the podium and says be back in 5 with a trade

  355. avatar Dennis says:

This is awesome! Makes the pick that much more of a no-brainer. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, enemies, everybody, to fill up nvmc on june 26.

  356. avatar pablo says:

Boy after reading all these posts, i sure hope Garth and Charlie seal the deal.
Because the repercussions of not picking Tavares might be greater in the long term.
And the fans will never let them live it down. Because watching Tavares score 40-50 goals on another team would be painful.

  357. avatar Noomz says:

    Tavares > Hedman

Passing on Zach Parise was a mistake in the 2003 draft. Reason: People thought he couldn’t skate well. End result: Parise was the last year’s 3rd leading goal scorer & ranked 5th among all NHL players in points. Our pick in 2003 was a Swede named Robert Nilsson who now skates for Edmonton.

Let’s hope the franchise has learned its Parise lesson. We could have had a young bench with Parise, Okposo AND Tavares.

Our choice is clear and obvious. See you at the season opener in October, JT… at the Coliseum!

  358. avatar Frank says:

#349- So right. This is what the fans want. GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT…JT!!!!!!!!!!

  359. avatar steve says:

Holy Shite Chris – GREAT interview: you are the man!!!!

  360. avatar S Tix says:

Draft Tavares and I’m getting season tix.

  361. avatar K021 says:

The Toronto media will probably spin this into Tavaras only wanting to get picked 1st over all.

I think being picked 1st overall is a huge motivation factor for Tavaras but I also believe the kid’s sincere and wants to lead this franchise back to its glory!

    Let’s Go Islanders!!!

  362. avatar Isles fan Ken says:

You gotta appreicate the fact that JT reached out to Point Blank, which means he wanted to reach out to the fans. CB, can you post your reaction/thoughts to the interview? Let’s get 10,000 to the NVMC on June 26th!

  363. avatar Blizzard says:

The mandate is in. Even if JT is a bust Snow will not be fualted by the throngs of Islander fans who championed him. Its awesome to see the buzz in Islander land now. This once proud franchise will rise again. Its palpable.

  364. avatar Will Teese says:

Is it just me, or have the Islanders set themselves up for drafting tavares? They put up that “Who’s your pick?” thing, so they know 90% of fans want tavares. They are making us get tickets so they know how many people will be there for the draft. So if 90% of us want tavares, and if we got lets say 8000 at the draft party, over 7000 of us there would be screaming for tavares. It would be suicide for them not to take him. Thats why i think the indication is they will take him.

  365. avatar Tom Barone says:

I agree with “Blizzard”. I would rather pick JT and have him blow up in our face (Obviously I hope not) than have him go to Colorado or GOD FORBID Toronto and watch him hoist the cup over his head as the captain for one of them.

No one will be able to pin that decision to take JT on Snow if that happened. ANY one of these NHL teams would take JT and build a franchise around him.

  366. avatar Tom Barone says:

I actually may NOT go to the draft party with concerns what might happen if they don’t take JT. It will be ugly and a HUGE bummer as far as I’m concerned.

NOT that selecting Hedman would be a bad thing. He will obviously be a HUGE impact player. But I really feel strongly that passing on JT would be a HUGE/EPIC PROPORTIONS mistake on the Islanders part.

And no, I have never seen JT play in person, only on highlights and reading a GAJILLION positive/glowing articles on this kid. But this just looks like just ANOTHER mistake waiting to happen for the ISles not to take JT and watch him ride off into the sunset with multiple cups some day.

  367. avatar Fred says:

It will be great to hear the chant JT-JT-JT again in the old barn.It has been a while…

  368. avatar Rob76 says:

Hey CB – after reading all these comments and your story – i was wondering what your reaction to the interview was, are we all over reacting? Or is this as good of news as we all are trying to make it out to be. Yes, JT wants to be an Islander. Yes, he stayed at Garths house instead of the GCH. This interview got the most reaction since the lottery, what is your personal reaction to this…JT or bust

  369. avatar Garth Snow says:

    We’re Picking Hedman!!!!!

  370. avatar Tom Barone says:

There ya have it! Garth has spoken.

  371. avatar Tavaras or Bust!!! says:

I hope Garth does the right thing for Isles fans. We have been thru hell for over a decade. We suffered thru Mad Mike and his dismantling of a once proud franchise. We are tired of being the laughing stock of the NHL and we’re tired of being embarrased on draft day.

This is OUR time, we deserve this.

Garth, embarras us, make us proud again, pick Tavares.

    TIA

  372. avatar Tom Barone says:

Maybe we can start competing again with the Rangers and Devils and get that 3 way rivalry heated up again. That’s always fun when all three teams are playing well. NOT that I want the Rangers to play well. Just so we are all clear on that!

  373. avatar Darryl says:

Great Article CB and thanks for all the work. I agree with the overwhelming majority and would love to see JT playing for the Isles.

How about a little love for the current maangement group though? How great is it that we’ve got such quality players saying they want to play on the Island? Worst record in the leaque last year, one of the worst rinks in the league and yet we’ve seen both Hedman and JT come out strongly stating they love the Island and would love to play for the team. Class acts like Doug Weight wanting to stay with the club and see something build there? Clearly Garth and the others are doing a GREAT job of building something here already. It seems that Okposo and Bailey are both character guys, adding still more of that really bodes well.

It wasn’t that long ago that nobody would have wanted to come to the Island even for a road game. We’re seeing a dramatic shift in the culture of this organization. Milbury would have likely traded the pick for the rights to Gordie Howe already.

  374. avatar Jmont6 says:

Great interview JT and CB. There is no doubt in any Islander fan who should be picked on June 26th. JT ALL THE WAY. That said is it just me or has there been very little talk about upcoming Free Agent season. Maybe we could have a post about who would be a good fit on the Island.

  375. What an amazing show of maturity and class on JT’s part, AS WELL as the Islanders. This is really a breath of fresh air that this team needs. I’m so impressed with Tavares’ words and want to see him in royal blue on June 26th!

  376. good article and keep posting thank you

  377. avatar Julian R says:

I’ve been a long time islanders fan who currently lives in Orlando Florida. If we draft this kid I will get nhl center ice again and follow him every step of the way. Just like Obama gave the country hope, this kid is an immediate influx of hope to my beloved Islanders. It’s a no brainer, let’s pick him up!!!

  378. avatar ZiggyWiggy says:

GET IT DONE! Make John Tavares an Islander for life! We need a big time franchise player. I’ll carry his luggage til I’m dead.

  379. avatar miked says:

its killing me !!!! i need to know. i was going to go to the draft party but i really dont want to be there if his name isnt called. and for the people who want hedman.. hes soft! u cant teach toughness and u cant teach someone how to be a goal scoring machine.. JT! JT! JT!JT! JT!

  380. avatar Islefan2487 says:

And so..it has been completed !!!
