6:50 pm – About 8,000 people here now, and still coming in. Crowd chanting “JOHN TA-VA-RES” as loud as any roar this past season. On the scoreboard they just ran Matt Duchene and Victor Hedman features, which were met with jeers. Arena erupts again when Tavares segment begins.

6:30 pm – Let me get this on the record one more time. If this blog goes up in flames as a result, so be it. There will be far bigger issues.
The Islanders are going to draft John Tavares. The Islanders should draft John Tavares.

6:18 pm – CJ Papa and Dina are interviewing a lot of fans over the Coliseum scoreboard. Funny thing is, they’re not asking the fans who they would like to see the Islanders draft.

6:05 pm – Just ran into a top Islanders exec who may be a great actor, or he was sincerely concerned. I’m 99% certain it’s the latter, but I also predicted the NYI would take Tavares. I think he just doesn’t know, has heard about the reports from Logie and Dreger and Duhatschek and is on guard.

5:55 pm - Greg Logan reports Avalanche sources calling NYI drafting of Duchene a “certainty.”

5:45 pm – I’ve run into a half-dozen former colleagues in the 10 minutes since I’ve been in the NVMC. At least five of them could use a pair of Depends. The other guy is trying to keep busy so he doesn’t have to think about it. None of them have any clue what’s going to happen in 90 minutes.

5:38 pm - Just got to the press box. Good crowd already here. Some writers blogging on the draft party floor, while I’m joined upstairs by old friend Brian Compton of nhl.com. I couldn’t get any work done down there, especially if…you know…
My prediction of Tavares for the last two months will hold until they finally make the doggone pick. Yes, I’m aware of my boy Dreger changing his pick to Duchene.

Jankowski blogged in on the Isles’ web site stating his confidence with who they’ll choose while also stating that he doesn’t want to sit so close to the front (of the draft board) again. With speculation that Duchene might not even be NHL ready, wouldn’t his selection almost assure that the Isles’ will get another high (lottery) pick next season? Please do the right thing guys. And to you, Wang, that does not mean drafting a Sumo goalie!

This pick is not going to make or break the islanders. But somehow, I am geering up for dissapointment. The islanders will be a better team with the addition of anyone of the three names talked about. HOWEVER, the islanders anemic offense has the chance to improve itself with the highest scoring forward in OHL history. Does anyone else think this one is a no brainer or is it just me? You can make a case for any of the three guys, but the islanders most glaring need is goal scoring.
The scouting staff watches these kids all year, so anyone they pick will be with the intention of improving this organization. Im sick of reading fans write that they’ll be done with this team if they dont pick Tavares. Half of them dont even go to games, so good riddance.
From a selfish standpoint, I would like to finally have a player who can tie up a game with a minute to go.

I tried to fly up today because I felt I just could not miss this big day in Islanders history. I am 37 years old and since becoming an adult where I can pay my own way; these days have been few and far between. Unfortunately the weather was so stormy in South Florida and much the same from what I heard in NY that I was terrified to get caught on a runway while all the haps went down. So sad; but I am pasted to my TV, laptop and I-Phone and my wife is looking at me like I am a complete addict. Have a beer for me at Dugans. Thanks CB for all your efforts; I know it is appreciated by all fans but none more than guys like me stuck in Florida. Get JT!!!!!

Colorado has a VERY big incentive to make the other teams believe that we are picking Duchene. If we pick Duchene, the Lightning probably take Hedman, and Colorado has Tavares. That means that their Number 3 pick is basically Tavares, in terms of trading potential. That is, until we take Tavares. I’ll be very surprised if we don’t take him.

Who are these sources? If Garth, Wang & Jankowski are the only one’s who know then there should be no leak; there has been no leak to date. This is a joke. If there is a leak it is intentional. The Islanders didn’t start floating around who they intend to pick. This has to be a hoax and just the way a source or media outlet tries to get ratings by making ballsy predictions based on sources they supposedly only have. I’m NOT buying it and I am with CB all the way. Let’s be real folks, where are the leaks? Snow and Wang & Janks have had a plan that they executed so well since the lottery; they are not going to falter 30 minutes prior to the draft. This is bogus; nobody really knows who the pick is and teams like the Lightning, Colorado & Toronto (damn them) are scrambling trying to make a plan and Garth is smiling and waving knowing that nobody really knows his plan. OK, this will be my last post for tonight. I can’t see the Islanders picking anyone other than Tavares. People say that you can’t pick according to what your fans want, but the Islanders situation is different. You can’t apply that logic because of the feelings depicted in the above posts. The fans overwhelmingly want Tavares. Even if the scouts think Duchene is a little better, the fan response makes the decision a no-brainer.

He is the best choice and I believe in Garth. He has really played the media well on this. How often does this kind of secret stay so safe, usually someone leaks it. This isn’t the case, all this talk about Hedman and Duchene is speculation b/c nobody knows and need something to say. He said its the same player since the lottery – meaning Tavares. I also think Wang will want him.

Snow probably asked Colorado if they had any offers to swap picks, which Col thought meant that the Isles were taking Duchene, but he was just toying with their heads. There is no rational way Snow passes on Tavares. That would be like the Pens passing on Crosby for Bobby Ryan. Bobby Ryan is a great player, but not your next FRANCHISE center.

I would like to encourage all of those present at the coliseum for the Live Feed to… express themselves to the full when the pick is announced.
At the very least, it would let the viewers know that the goalie-gm does not speak for them, and they recognize his complete ineptitude when making hockey decisions.
Sadly, Islander fans are the ones that will end up getting mocked for this either way. They always do.
