FIRST PICK TO BECOME ROYAL-TY
NYI to present Vintage Third Jerseys to draft picks

Islanders Point Blank on Twitter

Point Blank has confirmed that when the Islanders announce their first round draft selections, the prospects attending in Montreal will receive the vintage Third Jersey and the above Reebok-issued cap with the matching royal blue logo.

At last check with team and league sources, the vintage royal blue jersey and matching pants, socks and gloves will still be the Third “uniform system” for 2009-10. The Islanders are unable to bust through league guidelines and make them the primaries, but will wear the vintage for approximately 20 home games.

Really now: when you order those Tavares Hedman Duchene Okposo jerseys, is there any other choice of model?

Great news. I was hoping that this would be the case, and I can’t wait to see Tavares in the 09 royal blue.

  2. 2 hank

    that is cool. Hedman!!

  3. 3 Johnny Islander

Hat’s nice… But I would have done without the orange stripe on top.

  4. 4 battery jackson

they need to make some more flat brimmed new era fitteds….i’d definitely get me a few

  5. 5 Isles6

I guess, I am the weirdo…I prefer white jerseys…that being said the sooner they can go back to real Islanders’ jerseys, the better.

  6. 6 sybo

That’ll make for a nice golf cap this summer !!!!

  7. 7 G. HOWITT

JT OR BUST ON DRAFT DAY!!!

  8. 8 b-ri

love the jerseys… liking the hat too

  9. 9 Dominik (Lighthouse Hockey)

Nice. Can’t wait for the white one to follow in 2010.

  10. 10 derek

    CB,

Do you know if they are going to issue the “09″ on the back or the players #? If Tavares is drafted, I’m sure a ton of fans are going to be ordering a jersey and would like to know that he, for sure, will be wearing #91.

  11. 11 Netminder39

If they do have the #91 jersey ready for the draft, then the Islanders knew for a while that they were taking Tavares, and leaving the fans to paranoia for the last two months!!!! Haha, why am I not really surprised by this? This is Snow we are talking about.

  12. 12 Chris M

Now let’s bring back the white retro. Note to Modell’s, have your stock room loaded with #91 Tavares on June 27th. I’ll take one, L, Retro. BTW, the Islanders website has also gone retro. While the Isles might not be able to “officially” call the retros the main jersey, the marketing seems to say the good ole’ royal/orange now represent the colors of the Isles.

  13. 13 Netminder39

    One more note:

This is the same person (Snow) that when he played for the Islanders and received a star against the Flyers in Philly, he did skate out and the fans started booing him lol. This is almost typical Snow for doing this to us. Do we deserve this kind of treatment lol?

  14. 14 Mike L

Derek- As long as I’ve been to draft parties they have always accepted jersey orders there for the newest edition(s) to the team. They take the player desired and if the player doesn’t have a number yet, they will make it once that number becomes known.

  15. 15 JP39

I hope that Tavares chooses to wear #61 for the Isles. I believe that is the number he wore this past season after was traded to the London Knights. Although #91 isn’t a retired number by the Isles, I kinda feel like it “belongs” to Butch Goring. As great as he was during the Cup years, I don’t feel like it should be actually raised to the rafters, but I think it should be “honored” by not being worn by current players. But I also think #61 is a unique number that would be really awesome for JT to wear in an Isles jersey. I don’t believe it has ever been worn by an Islander (not counting assigned training camp jersey numbers), and it would allow him to establish himself as his own player with his own identity. And I could be wrong, but I think only one other player in the entire league wears #61, and that is Rick Nash. Just my opinion, but obviously the first priority is actually picking JT on June 26th…3 weeks from tomorrow!!! Can’t come soon enough!!!

    LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!!!

  16. 16 JD

Nice, cant wait for the following year when we rid ourselves of the clownsuits.

  17. 17 Gloobenberg

    I hope he takes #61!

that’s my fav number plus im a big Rick Nash fan! :)

  18. 18 Darren

#10 - Why would Snow tell anyone what his intentions are for the draft? To ease some fans minds on a blog? Don’t get me wrong that would be great. But that seems insane to let the rest of the league in on what the team might do come draft day.
If you’re playing cards do you show the rest of the table your hand? NO!
Same deals here with draft. I know it sucks for us because we want him to finally give us Tavares. But this is a business and in business you would never tell your competitor your intentions.
Snow is doing the right thing.

  19. 19 JayK

I’m going to be the skunk at the garden party and say I like the jerseys they wore at the start of this decade, with the black numbers on the back. That was also when they introduced the four stripes on the shoulder. I thought those jerseys kept the best parts of our history with a slightly more modern color scheme. That’s what I’d like to “retro” back to.

  20. 20 OhNoItsComeau57

This is awesome!!! I actually had though about emailing you Chris to ask if you thought this was going to happen. Great news!

  21. 21 JayK

JP 39– a check of the Islanders Media Guide shows that you are right: nobody has worn #61, and #91 was worn only by Goring.

  22. 22 kk

Get rid of the laces already. Laces have absolutely no place on a modern hockey jersey.

  23. 23 Craig D.

#19: Islanders never had black in their jersey. Ever.

  24. 24 Staten Islander

retire 91 for goring, jt should wear 61

  25. 25 Angelos

This coming season will be another bad year, so I’m fine with making this jersey our official one for ‘10-11 when this rebuild should start bearing fruit. Tarnish-free.

  26. 26 bergie20

the vintage royal blue jersey is one of the best jerseys in the league. i’m glad the isles got the ok to use this on draft day. can’t wait for 10/11 when this is our primary jersey.

  27. 27 thepolishprince

Royal is the way to go. Can’t wait until that’s the primary uni.

  28. 28 7th Woman

    nice touch for the draft.

  29. 29 JP39

Has it actually been confirmed by the Isles or the NHL that the “Vintage” royal blue jerseys will be the primary jerseys for the ‘10-’11 season, or are we all just hoping for that? I know it had been discussed, but I hadn’t heard anything offical yet…

  30. 30 section 320 rocks

i love the third jersey and cant wait to see tavares wearing it on draft day

  31. 31 Tond

its funny they keep trying and trying and all the fans want is the original…please get the white one done next year and call it a day…we love these colors enough already.

  32. 32 Nick Isles From Brooklyn

Taveres is going to look sharp in that!

  33. 33 txdbog

im getting worried that by the time they get back to the real blues we all want that theyll be planning a new jersey with the team in a new city

  34. 34 nightfly

To my left here at work, I have a picture from the Oct 27, 2004 Daily News (black and white, alas) of Eddie Westfall shaking a Penguin’s hand after the 1975 quarterfinal win. That’s when I decided to go all-out to find an original roadie with the white-cuffed sleeves. It took two years but I got one, pre-Reebok (the hems are straight). It’s gorgeous. (I think they’d worn them for a Rags game two or three years ago, before everyone was forced to wear pajamas during games, and that’s when I found one in a collectibles store.) If I ever do put a name and number on it, though, it’ll be Westfall’s #18.

Can’t wait for the league to go back to home white unis, too. But the vintage road jersey is sweet and a great choice for the picks.

  35. 35 Tom Barone

I don’t care as long as the right guy (JT) is in that jersey. That’s all that matters.

  36. 36 DanNOLA

I love the royal blue. Now, if only they’d go back to wearing white at home…

  37. 37 kevin fitz

    AGREED DanOLA

  38. 38 Carmine

I just bought my retro third jersey while I was on vacation in NY last week. No player on it yet but when they pick Tavares I will be getting it done in October when I fly up for the home opener. If no Tavares then Okposo. Oh I can’t wait for the draft.

  39. 39 lovin lethbridge

    I want Captain Hiliner back!!!!

  40. 40 Gloobenberg

Blue at home is so much better! i love the way it looks!

  41. 41 Jake

I love the old skool 80’s ones. I rock that one from the CCM vintage collection. But if they Draft JT a 3rd jersey with his name on it will be purchased. I have set the $$ aside for it. And if they don’t take him well i got $150 to blow at the casino at night.

  42. 42 Sumo Goalie

I hope they switch to those vintage jerseys full time for the 2010-11 season. I must admit though that I do like the darker blue better.

  43. 43 C. Felix

#29. Good point. Are the 3rds really going to be the mains the season after this upcoming season (10-11)?

I think I’m gonna get a big fat #12 and Bailey on my retro jersey.

  44. 44 Isles fan Ken

JT will look great it in, #91 or #61. Can’t wait to purchase one after drfat day.

  45. 45 Bryan

I think the Islanders are keeping the draft a secret to build attention to the club and the draft. Otherwise nobody would even be talking about the Isles right now. All the talk would be who is Tampa taking.

Its nice to have our team in the spotline for a good reason this time.

  46. 46 Gillies Goring

Every trace of the current home/roads should be wiped from team history after they go back to royal full-time. Awful. (Which was worse, the old safety orange alts or the current uni?) Royal blue all the way.

  47. 47 JP39

I don’t have a problem with the current home/away jerseys at all. I just prefer the vinatage royal blues to be the primary jersey.

In a perfect world, this is what I’d like to see:

A new white version of the vintage jersey as the HOME jersey…The vintage royal blue jersey as the ROAD jersey…and the current “home” blue jersey converted to be the “3rd” jersey…getting rid of the current white jersey all together…

  48. 48 Gillies Goring

The shoulder piping is terrible. The four stripes patch has no place on the jersey of a team looking to ADD Cups. The Isles and Oilers going navy in the 90s were misguided attempts to “modernize” their looks – you’ve seen both clubs shift back to vintage colorways. There’s something to be said for picking your colors and sticking with them. I don’t see Detroit going with burgundy just to freshen things up.

  49. 49 Brian From Jersey

I don’t care if Tavares wears #583 .. just as long as we draft him

  50. 50 Willis

Whatevs, I just want a good hockey team.

  51. 51 Blizzard

Its all about the royal blues. It may be my imagination but the Islanders seem to play better when they wear them. I absolutley love the throw back jersey and it should be the primary jersey when the league allows.

  52. 52 Chris TMC

I am all for the classic colors and the vintage look jerseys… but the complaining regarding the Islanders about the home colors/away whites is misplaced. Thats an NHL decision, and it was the way it is now FAR longer than it was the way we are all more comfortable with. Right now this is technically the “classic” way of doing it.

  53. 53 Andy

YES, YES, YES. Ah… so good!
Any word on if the NHL/RBK agreed to let the Isles make the royals the primary uniform in time for 09/10?

  54. 54 Andy

    Error… must have skipped words

  55. 55 Matt

I bought a Okposo royal blue third jersey in December and I love it. Hopefully they become the regular home jersey soon.

  56. 56 Staten Islander

tavres and 583, hopfully that’ll be the number of goals he scores for us in a long and storied career, ahhhhhhhhhh i can dream can’t i?

  57. 57 Gloobenberg

Not that i mind at all but….i just think it’s so funny that every topic leads back to John Tavares! lol

We better draft this guy! lol

  58. 58 Tim

It’s a shame the NHL Store in NYC only sells those jerseys soiled with DiPietro’s name and number.

  59. 59 Moose

How about the current jersey with royal blue? I like the 3rd jersey but it is kinda boring. I don’t get why they choose the 70s version and not the 80s?

  60. 60 Valentino

Hypothetical situation. This kind of scares me. Lets say Balsillie loses the Coyotes bid ( which he most likely will ). He will be looking for a new target. If the lighthouse falls through and Wang really entertains the possibility of relocating, we already know Balsillie is going to throw around some serious money. Now this is where it gets interesting. Balsillie wants to move the team to southern ontario, mapleleaf territory. The isles may also draft Tavares who is a GOD in mapleleaf territory. Can you see this perfect storm brewing????

  61. 61 isles72

if JT does his islander homework he should realize that #91 shoudnt be worn without having a little chat with Goring first .

if butchie is ok with someone wearin #91 then lets do it

  62. 62 rvk

Like the old look and with JT wearing it we will no doubt usher in the old winning ways

  63. 63 IslesfanND

i think he should wear the number 26. for the day in which the isles are reborn into a new era of awesomeness.

  64. 64 Nick

    Throw a 91 on the back…and a C on the front…and let’s roll!

  65. 65 Jethro09

I don’t care what jersey the pick is wearing, as long as its Tavares in an Isles’ sweater. If they pick Hedman or Duchene, they might as well throw a fisherman jersey on him and have Nyiles dance around him like a circus act.

  66. 66 derek

Once the Isles draft Tavares, officially go full time Royal Blue, and start winning again, I propose the Isles and fans start giving “The Royal Treatment” at “Fort Neverlose” during the playoffs. Rather than a white-out, we all wear Royal Blue. I know, I know, I’m getting WAAAY ahead of myself but I want to be ‘on the record’ as the first person to mention this.

  67. 67 Vukota

    #66 Jethro!!!! Awesome…

  68. 68 Brian G

Derek don’t be a jinx - just pick Tavares first

  69. 69 isles99

i could care less what jersey they are wearing as long as the guy wearing the jersey is Johnny Tavares!!!!! This is hockey, not a fashion show!!!

  70. 70 Third Base

What difference does the vintage jersey make if there aren’t the vintage alumni playing? You can’t polish a turd.

  71. 71 bcarey

where are those hats available for purchase? NHL shop does not have them.

  72. 72 JonesY811

friend of mine works at the nhl store in the the city… this may be looking into a situation too much but he told me they got a whole boat load of orders in for the royal blue jerseys and letterings of “V” and “T”.

  73. 73 Dorfer

The current uniforms are horrible. They’re not fit for a roller hockey team. I’d like to see the 80’s jerseys used as the regular uni’s and the 70’s style used as the alternate.

  74. 74 Irish Isle

Although #91 isn’t a retired number by the Isles, I kinda feel like it “belongs” to Butch Goring. As great as he was during the Cup years, I don’t feel like it should be actually raised to the rafters, but I think it should be “honored” by not being worn by current players.

To all of those who dont think anyone else should wear Goring’s Number: Due you think the ultimate teamplayer that Goring is would care if someone else wore his number. Especially one that id supposed to be the savior of the franchise, a player who said he wants to be a part of the franchise, and part of the history of the franchise?

And if Tavares is everything we hope he is, and brings Lord Stanley Home, we then retire 91 for both Goring and Tavares.

  75. 75 Danielle

#72 - The only thing that would tell (if anything, as I don’t think they would be releasing jersey orders for fear of someone leaking the pick) is that they would be taking either JT or Victor Hedman, who both have the letters V and T in their names. If it is a sign, then they’re not trading down to get more than one player, which is good.

  76. 76 felix

V is only in Hedmans first name. so the T and V would be for only for Tavares technically.

  77. 77 Dan

I was just toying around with Islander jersey customizations on the nhls online store..tavares in a #19 looks pretty damn good as well. that being said i couldnt care less what number he wears, he could be 00 and id be just as thrilled

  78. 78 303Joe

Just ordered a nice 3xl in the 3rd jersey been looking at it for several months and pulled the trigger today. No name just yet I’m thinking Okposo/Bergenheim or Streit with an outside chance at Tavares if they should get him. I’ll get the jersey now and can always get the name and # out on. Gotta a nice deal of $111 shipped to my house for the reebok 3rd saw it elsewhere for $134 w/o the shipping. As for the hat ehhh me and white hats don’t do well get to dirty to quickly.

  79. 79 TM

The vintage royal unis as current thirds are about the only thing this franchise has gotten right recently. Make them permanent in 2010-11.

Time to start correcting all the mistakes. Now get the games to be heard on AM radio.

  80. 80 Gillies Goring

    #77
Um, I think 19 is already taken.

  81. 81 Dan

    its not, sim is 16

  82. 82 JKP on LI

I definitely agree that the 80’s version of the jersey, with no laces and thinner stripes, is a sharper look. I feel like the whole “original jersey” thing is gimmicky, but it’s not as bad as the “main” jerseys which are completely overdesigned in pursuit of adding any feature that might make someone want to buy it.

I expect that the team won’t confirm switching over to the 70s jersey full time because it would tank the sales of the current main jersey for the rest of the season.

  83. 83 islea 14

like the jersey.but wish we could wear home whites again.jt will look good in that though

  84. 84 Gillies Goring

    #81.. Think Trots.

  85. 85 phishstyx

I feel like punching Mike Milbury

  86. 86 TwistedWrister

sounds great! I love the royal blues… hopefully those will be our full time jerseys soon.

Also, that is a nice hat. Is it special made for the draft? Wouldn’t mind getting one myself! :)

  87. 87 gary9-19-22

Ok… Best jersey ever wa the royal blue with the orange numbers with no name. Keep the shoe lace. I say make an exact copy of the jersey and let them wear that.

Road white can have the name on it.

3rd jersey should be changed each year for the money. I would make the thirdf jersey a road one so we get royal blue at home each game. Make it vintage and NO NAMES.

Btw.. We wore orange numbers for Bobby Bourne night

  88. 88 JKP in Halifax

I hate white hats… impossible to keep clean. But seeing JT (hopefully!) pull on the Royal Blue will be a nice sight. I’m not a fan of the current sweater and like the royal blue and even the navy blue of earlier this decade.

  89. 89 Andrew in NJ

Nice the good news keeps on coming! I wish those jersey’s were primaries so badly. THOSE ARE THEIR NATURAL COLORS! Can’t wait to see them on draft day. Anyone notice the hat logo does not have the 4th stripe on the stick?

  90. 90 savetheisles.webs.com

    i love these jersey.

im gonna get my tavares one pretty soon

  91. 91 Eye on the island

where can we get those hats? I can’t find it online

  92. 92 Neil

Victor Hedman wears #41 for MoDo for those of you who want a jump on the action :) What’s up with all these guys wearing #91? Taveres, Kadri, Stamkos all wear it. Tavares just changed to 61 when he got traded to London because Kadri already had it. Are they all Federov fans?

  93. 93 Thomas32

CANT WAIT to see John Tavares in that jersey!!!! YEAH BOY!!!

  94. 94 NYI FAN

Historically, the #1 is placed on the jersey that is given to the teams’ first round or first pick. This is a safety measure, as teams will frequently negotiate their picks. If JT is picked & there is a #91 on the back it will reveal he was their choice all along. Lets Go Islanders!

  95. 95 chip saunders

To be perfectly honest,I’m not crazy about the vintage jersies. The uni’s they have know are fine,if they want a vintage jersey, why not the White’s?

  96. 96 robby D

They need to return to these retro jerseys full time. They are the real colors of the team. The dark blue is awful.

  97. 97 Eric

#5 White Jerseys are the best. It MUST BE WHITE AT HOME. Its ridiculous seeing every road team where white when they come in. The Islander vintage whites were always my favorite jersey.

  98. 98 TomUnfiltered

NYI FAN #94 - I thought the year of the draft was on the back of the jersey? I dunno - I could be wrong - just always thought that - too lazy to look it up lol - and obviously I’m stoked the team will be presented to the league at the draft in the royal blue, and not the garbage they wear full-time with the weird strip across the shoulders and what not - ugly unis

  99. 99 Neil

Hey CB, A link to buy that hat when you get a chance? Thanks!
