Yep, that would explain this photo

12:04 pm - As we forecasted thanks to this photo, Scott Gordon gets the nod as one of Ron Wilson’s assistant coaches for Team USA at the 2010 Olympics in Canada. John Tortorella of the Rangers is the other assistant. Congratulations to Scott. Kudos to Dave Sandford of Getty Images for some quick thinking on draft weekend.

10:00 am - USA Hockey names Ron Wilson’s assistants for the 2010 Olympics at noon today at this site. Granted, head coaches don’t have anything to do on draft weekend except shake hands. But from this shot at draft weekend, it would appear Scott Gordon has the gig. Either that, or they’re watching Brian Burke’s predictions of Duchene and Lecavalier for the Islanders.

    That would be fabulous.

Gordon for Team USA!!! Hire Laviolette back as an assistant with Gordon and Chynoweth for the Isles!!!

  3. avatar NYLES says:

#2, Laviolette will not take a demotion to an assistant position.

  4. avatar Chris TMC says:

Picture says a thousand words, CB! That would be great! :)

And Thomas, Lav is a stanley cup winning veteran coach now- I dont see him as an assistant to a newbie coaching a team he was the head coach of which fired him lol. Its surprising how many people keep suggesting that though.

Great for Gordon……… Good for Team USA? Hope so…

  6. avatar Don says:

Maybe Wilson wanted to show off his snazzy new MacBook Pro, and Gordo’s a computer nerd…

RW: “See? I can run Windows applications in a separate program without leaving OSX!”

SG: “Dude, I so have to get one when I get back to Long Island…”

  7. avatar Hockey1919 says:

Maybe Gordon is just showing Wilson that the website he needs to go to is called islanderspointblank if you want to know who the Isles are going to draft?

  8. avatar bob l says:

good luck to him in getting the gig, it will do good to keep an eye on KO

  9. avatar Pat says:

If he gets the gig – gives him a chance to scout players both on Team USA and the opposition and bring that back to the Islanders……..plus ………..gives him a taste of the big time which may help him with the NYI going forward

  10. #2…as great as it would be for the Islanders to bring back Laviolette as an assistant, he will never accept a demotion to assistant coach. Considering they both preach hard-forechecking and uptempo skating systems it would be wonderful, but still, never going to happen.

As for Gordon, that would be great. I truly believe that he is going to be a great coach in the NHL, and that he is going to be great for the NYI over the next few years. Best of luck to him at noon today.

    Is it Hockey Season yet?

  12. avatar Giaco says:

    Torterella and Gordon announced.

  13. avatar mtrico says:

Tortorella and Gordon were named assistants. Interesting.

  14. avatar Will C. says:

A NY rivalry behind the bench!

  15. avatar Jon Mac says:

TO NY rival coaches leading team USA. Nice!

  16. avatar Alex says:

Congrats Gordon! Should be interesting having two rival coaches as assistants next winter.

  17. avatar Le Dude says:

I hope those Olympians can hand THE SYSTEM.

  18. avatar dedshark says:

HAHAHAHA they’re gonna bench brawl mid game

  19. avatar Thomas32 says:

I know he would never take a demotion to an assistant , BUT , it would be an AWESOME combo on our bench!! : ) I don’t see any other teams showing interest.

  20. avatar Thomas32 says:

Other people saying the same thing , shows Im not that far off from dreaming about an A++ coaching staff!

  21. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

Do we want Torterella to sniff some of politics of Go-Go system?

  22. avatar Jim M says:

Great News, hopefully KO can make the team now!!

  23. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

Great for gordon, As long as he focuses on Isles this season i dont care.

Last year he got free pass. Trust me we finish in the bottom 3 this year in NHL and we wont be talking about the gordon system next year.

  24. avatar robby d says:

Great! Hope Okposo can find a spot. Hope Tavares makes his way onto Canadian Roster. Streit will be on Team Swiss.

  25. avatar YellowHat says:

Okposo making the team would be a stretch but definatley a possibility. I don’t think JT has a snowballs chance in hell of making the team. Way to early and young.

  26. avatar streit02 says:

This is good news with Gordon being such a young coach. All this experience will help with the Isles as well.

  27. avatar GPMD says:

Congrats to Gordon.. he’s a very promising coach.

  28. avatar bob l says:

yellow hat, i dont know about that, burke IS the GM of the team and we know how he feels about JT, lol

  29. avatar MSA says:

@19 Don’t be so sure Lou doesn’t bring Laviolette to the Devs.

  30. avatar bob l says:

sorry, got cut off, the other part was that burke makes a trade to get JT on the us team… oh well, joke failed. sorry

  31. avatar doug f. says:

maybe Gordan can do the job full time…:)

  32. avatar Atari8bit says:

No Lavvy is a bit of a mystery to the uninformed (meaning me), thought that he would be shoo-in. Will he be the next coach of Da Devil?

Anyway congrats to Go-Go. Him and Torts makes for any interesting NY/NY tandem.

  33. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Congrats to Gordon! Let’s hope he’s learned from his rookie year and has a better season as well as the rest of our team.

  34. avatar kevin27NYI says:

    awsome

  35. avatar b-ri says:

hopefully Kyle can find his way on to the olympic roster. Not a chance tavares does. Crosby was left off in ’06 so sorry johnny boy, hopefully in 2014

  36. avatar Dan L says:

@23..I wouldn’t be too sure we won’t finish in, or near, the bottom 3 again this year. I don’t think were going to do much in free agency, going on what Garth has said about not wanting to take away playing time from guys already on the team. (Then again maybe I should believe what Garth says lol) Which means the only difference from last year is basically Tavares. Its going to be a long road back to being a perenial contender, JT is really only the first (albeit big) step.

  37. avatar bob l says:

well, KO got the invite, now he just has to make the team…
