MIKKO KOSKINEN SIGNED; 6-5 Finn inks 3-year deal
31st overall pick ready for North American career

by admin on July 13th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

5:07 pm - Mikko Koskinen told us on Saturday that he hoped a contract could be worked out soon so he could begin his North American netminding education, and now it has. Although the news was not released to the media, the official team site posted a short story at 3:59 pm about the Islanders’ second round pick from the 2009 draft signing his three-year, Entry Level deal. Now we can officially rank the soon-to-be 21-year old Finn as Bridgeport’s No. 1 prospect. Comments.

    Martin to follow?

  2. avatar Pat says:

Welcome to the Isles family Mikko.

Good idea to introduce as much competition to the goaltending position for this franchise as possible.

  3. avatar Matt says:

great stuff! hopefully this kid turns into something special!

  4. avatar tond24 says:

whoopie..wasted pick insted of grabbing ferraro..which det did, n what do they know about drafting…we get a old for a rookie goalie..yea

  5. avatar Chris TMC says:

Someone (I think it was Strummer?) made a point recently about how the Isles site uses old heights and weights and then sticks with them for all eternity. It cracked me up because it is absolutely true, even though there is NO logical reason for it. But now in this case they arent even going to get a players stats right in the FIRST place? :o Welcome to the Island, Mikko lol. :D

  6. avatar Thomas32 says:

    Welcome to the Islanders Mikko!!

  7. avatar TIM says:

curious about how fast this signing took place……say’s to me that DP is hardly doing as well as the islanders had hoped for just more for us fan’s to speculate on and with the islanders hush hush on him why should’nt we speculae

  8. avatar isles72 says:

too early to call him Godzilla ?

  9. avatar Themass says:

That’s great news. Can we sign our first pick now

  10. avatar avolp55turgeonfichaud says:

    6’7….. beast

  11. avatar ItsGoodToBeRich says:

Does this mean we signed our enforcer?

  12. avatar Bryan says:

They must be pretty high on this guy to get him drafted and signed so quickly, regardless of his age.

  13. avatar nystrom23 says:

this guy looks like a beast in front of the net on the isles website…barely could see any of the net behind him.

  14. avatar Will C says:

New Nickname: Kikkoman. Good signing, makes you wonder about DP. I always say if nothing is wrong then there should be absolute transparency.

  15. avatar admin says:

The goalie is big, but my height source confirms Koskinen at 6-5…CB

  16. avatar Chris R says:

DP should start the season in Bridgeport alongside Mikko to show him the ropes.

  17. avatar Bobby says:

Lets just hope DP starts the season on skates….and go from there!

  18. avatar Tavares #1 says:

This is not a wasted pick at all. Please name one reliable goalie that we had before this kid.

  19. avatar drive45 says:

tond24 – We can never have enough goalie prospects in my eyes. Most important position on the ice by far. Say both Mikko and Ferraro turn out to be studs in the NHL, which one will be more important for the team and win (or lose) more games for you? Where would the Isles have been without Smitty? Where would the Devils be without Marty (don’t tell me about Weekes/Clemenson)? I bet we scouted this kid in Finland more than anyother team and knew he had the goods.

  20. avatar Staten Islander says:

Can he fight? Just kidding, welcome Mikko

  21. avatar ron says:

still waiting for a tavares 3-year contract to be announced

  22. avatar Bobby says:

They are waiting to anounce the signing of Jon Mirasty & John Tavares together!

  23. avatar Ande says:

Mikko´s great, but he have to practice his glovehand first. Great pick from Isl!

  24. avatar mw147 says:

Hey, CB, you really think he becomes the #1 prospect at Bridgeport? He passes Joensuu?

  25. avatar Will C. says:

Last time we had goaltending depth, Potvin, Salo, Fichaud? Good lord. Smitty-Chico-Hrudey years I guess.
    PS= I couldn’t even joke Hextall.

  26. avatar gary says:

well, assuming he got 2nd round entry money, Martin shouldnt receive anything better then 3rd round money

  27. avatar Blizzard says:

Welcome Mikko. I wonder what ever happened to Mikko Makala. I use to love that guy.

  28. avatar dynasty23x4 says:

    #11-LMAO!

  29. avatar ME says:

Hedman received a base rookie pay and bonus earning up to $3,750,000 which I think is this years max a rookie can earn including bonuses. Last year Stamkos received his base and bonus earnings up to $3,725,000 which was last years total allowed. Something tells me the Islanders with their struggling finances do not want to muster up the max dough for Tavares but they may not have a leg to stand on since Hedman got what he got from Tampa. I thought these contracts take up to 15 minutes to sign?

  30. avatar espoonbluesfan says:

Well, i can say ( Im from Finland ) that i can see Mikko in NHL someday. He has so much potential that you can’t even imagine. I’ve seen his performances back in Finland ( also on Champions Hockey League ) and i can promise that this kid is going to be a star !

  31. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Botta, I didn’t get the measuring tape on the guy but in his post draft interview with the Isles radio guy on their website and Mikko gives his ht as basically 6’6.5″ what he stated is what central scouting had him listed at too.

CB, how do they propsects look to you in terms of muscular development? We know Bailey looks much improved how about the rest that are returning?

  32. avatar Battfist says:

Maybe will see Mikko in one of the last 10 games this upcoming season….

  33. avatar beatlebailey says:

    but can he sumo wrestle!?!?

  34. avatar Joe says:

CB, I know im not the 1st to ask, but why is it taking sooooo long for Tavares to sign. Hedman already signed and I thought these signings take like 20 mins due in a large fact to the CBA. Your thoughts?

  35. avatar Will C. says:

The money isn’t the issue signing JT, has to be the bonus triggers. Are the isles saying bonus hits at 35 golas, and JT wants at 20? That is probably the hold up.

  36. avatar doc says:

The sumo wrestler/goalie jokes never get old, do they…?

  37. avatar TIM says:

relax guy’s he’s islander property it’s not like somebody can sign him he’s not restricted cause he hads’nt signed a contract yet it will get done before the beginning of cammp just chill out

  38. avatar Robert says:

Looking forward to seeing this kid play… First I bought a 15 game Isle package for first time in my life, now maybe I’ll actually take a little road trip one weekend to Bridgeport to watch a game, and this kid (along with our Sarnia boys)would be the main reason why.

  39. avatar isles99 says:

the islanders need to cut the crap and give tavares his rookie max contract of 3.75 million dollars….i thought these things took 10 minutes not 10 days since pat brisson (the agent for tavares) has arrived. if you treat tavares like sh*t, how do you think he’s going to treat you when he becomes a ufa?

  40. avatar Strummer's Army says:

#37…..Pat?…….Pat Brisson? Is that you? LOL

  41. avatar steve says:

Maybe when Brisson made that “creative” comment he wasn’t kidding.
