SATAN AGENT TWEETS: HE’S TALKING TO NYI
We say no thanks; Also – Thompson gets 2-way deal

by admin on July 25th, 2009 at 11:57 am

12:00 pm – Point Blank has learned that the Islanders have signed Nate Thompson to a one-year, two-way contract, avoiding arbitration.

11:55 am - Agent Allan Walsh just posted on Twitter:  “Can confirm we are currently in negotiations with the NYI on a contract for Miro Satan.” With many good players still available via free agency or trade, I don’t see why they would bring back Satan at any price. Maybe they are just “in negotiations” and it’s all just a bluff. The Blake Comeau non-story continuesComments.

  1. avatar Staten Islander says:

Talking to Satan? A deal with the Devil. Bad idea.

  2. NO! I liked Miro..I did, but he’s not the right fit for this team, not at all. Please go with someone else… please!

  3. avatar Adam M says:

Oh no. As much as I liked Miro during his time here, he was run out of town at the proper time.

  4. avatar Kevin says:

I know I am in the minority with this but…if its a cheap price…do it. He can put the puck in the net and is alot tougher than people think. Don’t think he missed a game as a NYI and played through plenty of injuries.

  5. avatar JS says:

    Please GOD…No SATAN…
I’d rather take a flyer on Sykora or Afinigenov….
    Anyone but the devil himself…

  6. avatar The PolishPrince says:

If the Isles are going to sign just one more player please let it be an enforcer, not another go around with the often floating prince of darkness.

  7. avatar JZimm says:

Yeah, this kind of would be a step backwards. Frankly, I’m surprised to see it. I don’t know what Tanguay’s salary is now, but I’d rather sign him for a few seasons at 3.5 million than sign Satan for 1 year at a few hundred thousand. I know his agent has to love Satan, but the Islanders don’t have to. Leave him be.

  8. avatar BR says:

CB – Was going to bring that Tweet to your attention, so good catch! My question is…why?? Why even consider bringing this guy back, especially when we have a bit of a glut on RW. As you say, there are other players (younger and faster) out there. This one doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

  9. avatar hathead68 says:

Not high on signing Satan. C’mon Garth, get Tanguay on a 2 year deal and give Taylor Pyatt a ring!

  10. avatar islesfan999 says:

I would prefer Afiniganov sykora or an enforcer. Maybe Tanguay? proves that snow is gonna get something done at least//

  11. avatar mapisles2025 says:

Garth wouldn’t. He knows better than this.

  12. avatar BR says:

Of course, having said that, he would instantly become one of the top scorers on the team…

  13. avatar Al Beezle says:

If we have the money for this, poney up a bit more for comeau and see if he develops? I mean really… what are we going to get here….

  14. avatar admin says:

Post updated: Nate Thompson signed to a one-year, two-way deal, avoiding arbitration hearing on Monday…CB

  15. avatar Tavares #1 says:

Thompson should of been shown the door and NO to Satan.

  16. avatar Matt says:

    I love Miro!

    Nate Thompson, no!

  17. hmm i still hope Nate gets traded or his two way deal keeps him mostly in bridgeport. this and the satan thing has me head scratching… i’m gonna re-read the article about the rebuild and deHaan again to get me back on track.

  18. avatar Kevin says:

Gee Nate Thompson settled. Great beginning to the day.

  19. avatar AZS says:

Considering that Nate was going to get signed regardless, I’m glad to see it was a two-way deal. At least it gives the Isles some flexibility on sending him down …

Satan? Not too sure what I think about that one …scored 17 last year if I am correct, but I can think of other people I may want on the team …

CB, anyway you can do a top 10 list of players still available (ufa or trade) that you think the Isles might target?

  20. avatar Chris TMC says:

Glad to hear that about Nate!

As far as Miro goes, any possible Miro deal would have to be very frugal for everyone to be OK with it. Ive always liked Miro, but you have to see that his value has definitely gone down a lot.

  21. avatar islesfan999 says:

Excellent Thompspon will most likely start the year in the minors and be a decent call up if we run into injuries. Now lets sign an enforcer or trade for one. Also lets get Eminger or Seidenberg and Tnguay and ill be thrilled..

  22. avatar isles99 says:

signing satan would be stupid. he scored 17 goals while playing on crosby’s wing. translation-no more than 12 goals with the islanders. pass. this would be a big step backwards. whatever happenend to taking time awat from the young kids?

  23. avatar billy says:

Noooooooooooooo Satan, even if he paid us to be on the team. He is done as a nhl goal scorer, id rather sign afinogenov and i dont want him either. ahahha

  24. avatar StevieL says:

Satan couldn’t make it work with Crosby and won’t make it work here. He brings nothing to the Isles or the rebuild!

  25. avatar Swan says:

Nothing definite yet. Nothing to get worked over.

Miro was underappreciated a bit in his time here. A legit Top 6 forward who liked Long Island and still might get 20 goals in his career.

And he certainly floats less than Blake Comeau does and will score twice as many goals, at a minimum.

  26. avatar isles72 says:

I think we could use a guy like Mike Grier alot more than Miro at this time .

  27. avatar bear says:

if they sign Miro put him on a line with KO, hopefully he can put up 20 goals pre-trade deadline so we could flip him for a pick

  28. avatar Staten Islander says:

good idea bear, thats the only upside i see to this one

  29. avatar Nick Pezzotti says:

I wouldnt mind Miro at all, think of a powerplay that consisted of Weight and streit at the points with okposo satan and tavares down low. Plus he seemed to be a good guy in the locker room and im sure he can give some advice to a rebuilding team since he just won a cup with one.

  30. avatar Strummer's Army says:

DEAR GOD NO SATAN! Can’t stand that soft floater! I was thrilled when he left. Don’t bring him back you don’t need some soft lazy wimp like Satan (didn’t he get scratched during the playoffs) rubbing off on the young Islanders. Weight is the kind of guy you want around all the young talent. Satan is the kind of guy you want playing for teams in your Division.

Man, I just turned on the computer and had to get bummed out with Satan news. That blows!

Glad Thompson signed a one year two-way. It’s fair.

  31. avatar rb says:

don’t know why everyone’s all upset about Miro…yeah, I know how he was playing before he left, but we don’t have much on the wings, and if we sign him REAL CHEAP, he could become an asset…I’m sure being put in the AHL last spring has him very motivated to succeed…at this point, the guy’s basicaly playing for his NHL-life

and good for Garth getting Thompson on a 2-way deal…no way he deserved more than that

  32. avatar orngfan says:

thompson better be starting the year in bridgeport.. and if things go well finishing there also. give joensuu a chance b4 thompson, thompson is a career minor leaguer!

as for satan, i’m just speechless. the guy couldn’t even stay up with pittsburgh for a complete season playing on a line with sid crosby!

  33. avatar michele says:

can’t possibly take anything on tweet seriously..come on, its obviously its his agent talking trying to get something/ anything for teams to talk to him..He is doing his job, trying to find work for his client..Garth is not doing this..He is much smarter..in garth we trust.

  34. avatar timm says:

this is looking really really grim. there’s NO way we should sign miro. there is no upside to his play, he was awful his last year on the island and didn’t do much for the pens this year. we would definitely be the only team in the nhl who would offer him a contract. BUMMER. don’t do it garth!

  35. avatar Mike L says:

If Satan could come cheap on a one-year deal then I’d be more than happy to welcome him back. The man could still score and it wouldn’t be as if he’s really taking ice time away from a huge prospect. Its tough to attract players to come here, so it’s actually nice to see a goal scorer who wants to come.

  36. avatar Original Rob says:

Give me a break- Satan??? Been there, done that, he’s finished, no thanks.

  37. avatar Viper says:

We do not need Satan. All the best to him, but he is no longer a fit with the Isles. (Never really was).

  38. avatar Staten Islander says:

Wait a minute, did I miss something? Is it April Fools Day?

  39. avatar Nick Pezzotti says:

I dont know why we wouldnt look at Sykora for a one year deal also.

  40. avatar dahammer says:

RDS also posted this Satan rumor a couple days ago. It may have legs. If he signs here, it would remind me of when Czerkawski came back after his year in Montreal on a cheap contract. Say what you want people, but Satan has averaged 20 goals a year for the last three seasons. How many guys on the Isles are capable of that right now? Exactly.

  41. avatar Church Hill Drew says:

The sad thing is that he instantly becomes a “top-6″ guy on our very undermanned, undersized and outgunned squad. What does THAT tell you about the state of the Isles? Eminger, Seidenberg, Tanguay? All of those guys fit…and fit at a sensible price while complimenting the rebuild….not sidetracking it.

NO, I don’ think Garth is going the Miro Satan route although that’s what’s probably left in the budget. Geez, sometimes ya gotta spend .50 cents to make a dollar, ya know? And as much credit as I give Snow and Morrow for Streit, Roloson and Biron, their great “deals” were every bit the result of a diminishing market and poor management/overvaluation by their respective agents as it was some amazing “coup” by the Isles. Sure, I’ll give credit where it’s due….and I’m totally on board with the Sno-Janks-Gordo-Wang overhaul plan but at what point is it fair to start asking to see some real, tangible results?

    Botta, what says YOU?

  42. avatar Pete M says:

I can’t believe that Snow would consider re-signing Satan. This can only be that his agent is using the Islanders – or Snow is using Satan – as leverage in other negotiations. Maybe things ARE looking up around here.

  43. avatar Sean S says:

Yo know… if we sign Satan, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, but we have to go after Tanguay or Seidenberg to counter-act the bad memories of Satan’s last season on the Island. If we sign either one of the afore mentioned players, the spotlight on Satan will dim and the focus of the fans will be on the other guy leaving Satan some breathing room to do well without the preassure.

On another note, I am really glad the Isles signed Thompson. he definately deserved it the way he played for the time before he got hurt.

  44. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

All I can think about with Miro was that he was supposed to Yashin’s long lost winger. We all know how that worked out. The perfect guy for Yashin would have been Doug Weight but what’s done is done. I do not want to see Miro anywhere near this team. I can’t see how he adds anything to this team – scoring, defense, tutoring the kids, etc. SAY NO TO THE DEVIL!

  45. avatar KO21 says:

What did Thompson do to deserve a contract with this team???

I hope we don’t sign Satan again..

  46. avatar IslesPassion21 says:

I hope this Satan, rumor isnt true…Afenigenov is still young and has allot of skill, get him…

  47. avatar Eric says:

Church Hill Drew…You can only see tangible results when the puck drops in Oct not in July and not by who gets signed and who doesn’t. You say you’re on board for the overhaul but we’re only entering the second year of this thing and you seem to be impatient already. To answer your question about when is it fair to ask for tangible results, I’d say by the end of this season to the middle of next season. It has little to do with our record and everything to do with the play and development of our young guys. If they continue to trend upwards then things are going well and as planned. If they falter, plateau or regress then we can start wondering about some of our young guys. Until then, sit back and enjoy watching young talent grow(hopefully).

  48. avatar Blizzard says:

Marvelous, we signed Thompson and are talking to Satans agent. Forgive me while I puke. Hello Tanguay please……

  49. avatar Alex O says:

I dont like the Satan move. But if we are going to make it then we better sign him on the real cheap and he better not have a no trade clause (trade him for a bag of pucks at the deadline). He played in the AHL at times last year maybe he gets a 2 way deal come into training camp beat somebody for a job. (dont think so but I can hope) Thompson 2 way ok he can come up and down as a 13 14 forward (Yes I know coach likes him so he almost gets a spot )

  50. avatar Glen S says:

Although he may help the chance’s are that he will be a distraction in the locker room and take away from the rebuild.Like my son said to me before sign Tanguay and Peter’s and be done with it. I think Alex will bring more to the team then Satan did.

  51. avatar tond24 says:

joke..this is the guy who wouldnt waive his no trade so we wouldnt end up with nothin..and thats what we got for him…nothing…so thats we he can have..NOTHING

  52. avatar Brooks Simpson says:

Satan doesn’t make a lot of sense compared to several other FAs still available. Much depends on whether JT plays center or wing, and I’d like to see some talk about that.

  53. avatar Railbait says:

Say No to Satan. Sign an enforcer and let the young guys play.

  54. avatar kabbage says:

Man, we must be desperate. Tanguay and Satan???? We are still paying for Yashin. The same type of players – soft and they only perform when they feel like it. Just the type of players we want to show the kids the ropes!

  55. avatar David Volek says:

TO #4. Satan doesnt miss games because Satan doesnt hit. The isles already have that type of player in Tambellini. Both would be best on another team……

If Satan was worth anything the Pens would have re signed him. He’s softer than a soup sandwich….

  56. avatar Ed says:

Better the devil you know, then the devil you don’t…….. or something

  57. avatar David Volek says:

Anyone one here that is saying yes to Zero Satan, knows nothing about hockey. I would rather have a team of Nate Thompsons who would get down and block a shot for his team, or finish his check, than a team of soft euros.
Satan could only score on a 5-3 with the back door tap in. The occasional goal is not worth him being on this team. The eastern conference is more about N American hockey than euro finesse.
To poster #25 who compaired Comeau and Satan. First of all Comeau has better puck control than Satan. Second of all he brings more defensively and or anything away from the puck. Third of all Comeau hits, and mixes it up a bit. All of those qualities are what you want on your club……..thats what the isles are going for.
If the isles sign miro satan it would def initely be a step back in the rebuild. If your you are going to bring in a UFA, bring in a veteran who can lead by example……

  58. avatar streit 02 says:

please no! I was saying forever how bad this guy was. The same thing i also said with mike york. Say what you want, but the reason Satan put up the #’s he did in his 1st year was due to yashin. This guy skates like his feet are in cement. Hes way passed his prime and will serve absolutely no purpose on this team. He couldnt even crack pittsburgh’s lineup last year. I dont understand why they would even be talking to him right now

  59. avatar David Volek says:

    To poster #43.

Satan last year was on a team with Crosby, Malkin, Staal….etc etc Trust me there was no pressure on him to score. Yet he was sent to the minors. The problem with the guy is that he has no heart…….you CANT teach that. Hockey is about a lot more than scoring goals. If you arent scoring, you have to take care of your own end, and create plays. That guy was all about the paycheck, and did not give all he had. There are smaller guys in the league that throw their body more than him. Lunch pale hockey……….Satan is not the guy.

  60. avatar Swan says:

Confused by the naysayers. Satan fits in well with the Isles rebuilding plan, especially as recently described by C.B.

He is a short-term veteran who likes LI and can score. His 17 goals last season would make him one of the leading scorers on the Team.

Although definitely on the downside of his career, he probably will still be good for 16-22 goals next season. This will probably make him around the top3 scorer on the Team. He averaged 20 goals over the three season he played for the Islanders. This makes him the Isles leading scorer in recent Team history.

I don’t get it. Some people want Grier/Comeau/Colliton/Fritz more. Although I understand some of them fill different roles, they all wouldn’t score 22 goals total next season.

Signing Satan for a good contract is a no-brainer.

  61. avatar David Volek says:

    To poser #29.
With Bailey and now Tavares who are both lefties coming up, there is no need for Satan on the PP. The only way i would put him out on the ice on my team would be for a 5-3. Hes not strong enough on the wall to dig the puck out.
Id like to see a PP of….
    Comeau/Weight/Tavares
    Okposo, Streit

Thats a PP that could score……..which was something the isles havent had in years. Last year was a start in addressing the PP, but the above mentioned PP lineup would be the best PP the isles have had since the Turgeon, Thomas, Hogue days

  62. avatar Pete says:

    Oh no! We suck again!

    LOL jk

  63. avatar Ugly Roe From Massapequa says:

We need size. We need toughness. We need an enforcer.

    Miro Satan?

    A puff from the past.

I have to wonder if the Islanders are scouting the Russian Ballet for their next signing.

  64. avatar Pete says:

Not for nothing, I think this Islander team is one more tanked season away from being really good in the Crosby/Malkin or Toews/Kane good.

I know it pisses a lot of people to discuss the Isles not icing a team that can win every night, but one more Top-5 prospect can really bring this a sustainably good team for years to come. Was last season’s tank-job worth John Tavares? I think so.

    Just my $.02.

  65. avatar Willis says:

I don’t know, maybe its because I always had a soft spot for Miro but I wouldn’t be unhappy giving him a try, for the right terms. Guy’s got some skills he can teach our young ones and if he’s okay with Gordon’s rules (gotta play defense too), it could be a win win.

I’m back and forth on this.

  66. avatar David Volek says:

    Poster #57.

If Satan was a “no brainer” why arent the pens re signing him?

  67. avatar Mitch says:

Satan is not a no-brainer…he’s the furthest thing from a no-brainer. He’s too slow nowadays to really fit our system and there are still other scoring options that should be available that make a lot more sense. We should be thankful we had his last truly productive years and move forward (preferably to ANOTHER forward.) If he signs a league minimum 2-way I won’t cry about it but it’s a contract towards the max and shouldn’t be a priority right now. I’m hoping his agent used “negotiating” and meant “begging.”

  68. miro needs to sign with the devils before he retires, so i hope they dont sign him. that would easily become the best selling jersey in all of hockey.

  69. avatar bossy4president says:

Might as well go out and re-sign toe-drag Comrie also. That just might help force out this mass of puke I have sitting in my throat from just reading about possibly re-signing Satan….step away from the crack pipe Garth.

Nate on a 2-way is fine with me.

LET’S GO GET TANGUAY or CHEECHOO PLEASE!!!!!!!!

  70. avatar Hockey2219 says:

I really don’t see the logic behind this one, even if he comes on the cheap. He wouldn’t be able to help us long term and short term he doesn’t bring the size and toughness that we need and obviously he’s not a defenseman so he doesn’t help us on the blue line either.

  71. avatar isle5 says:

Are we talking to Oleg Kvasha too. WTF!

  72. avatar Terry 99 says:

Satan?…sorry I just threw up in my mouth.

  73. avatar JPinVA says:

Satan wouldn’t be my first choice, or even my tenth, but they do need a guy who can give them 15 minutes of competent hockey, second PP depth, and at least 65 games. Satan will probably do all of that while scoring between 12-20 goals.
He’s a 1 year bridge to the guys who may shine in the AHL (or juniors) this year.
I feel the same way about Sim playing this year.
They will afford the Islanders the luxury of allowing some players to develop at a slower pace.
I don’ think it will happen, but it wouldn’t be the end of hte world.
Now sign Comeau… and maybe the guy who scored the longest goal in Islander history.
    CB,
Any word on what Mike Sillinger is going to do this year? Just curious.

  74. avatar Al L says:

Miro is at a stage of his career, where he may be playing as much in the AHL as with the parent team. For those who may have forgotten or weren’t aware,he was waived by Pittsburgh, unclaimed and sent down to Wilkes-Barre for a fairly long stint last season before being recalled toward its end. Regarding negotiation,I wonder how much Garth would be asking for Satan to put on an Islanders sweater? I wonder if he could deduct the money recieved as a credit from the Cap. On second thought it may put him under the Floor once again. To be frank,if I were Snow,I might not even accept adding Miro to the roster if he paid me.

  75. avatar Swan says:

#66 (Volek) ?? The Pens just won the Cup. Their needs are much different than our needs. They don’t need his secondary scoring (which would be his primary scoring on the Isles).

Now that the goalies are set (although I would like to see blueline trades to make room for an upgrade on defense), the Isles need scoring more than anything else. Hence all the Tanguay talk. If Alex is not available, for whatever reason, Satan fits into the short-term vet who can score 20.

Seriously? You are comparing Comeau to Satan. Comeau mixes it up, he holds the puck better, he puts on his shin guards prettier, his laces are straighter, blah, blah, blah.

Bottom line last 3 seasons: Satan 64g/76a/-20 Comeau 15g/25/-16. Takeaway? Satan can score goals, even at this point in his career. Comeau cannot. I don’t care how nice his skates are.

Listen, I think there a number of better options available than Satan, but he definitely fits into the Isles overall rebuilding plan and fills a greater need than the Comeau’s and Grier’s of the world.

  76. avatar Battfist says:

People who like Tanguay should like Satan-basically the same player. I say no to both. But I agree with Kevin #4-I thought Satan played hard and through a tough injury that one year.

As others have said-if we are going to sign someone-with a forward with toughness.

  77. avatar b-ri says:

    say no to the devil

    tanguay anyone?

  78. avatar David Volek says:

Dear Swan…………Satan had 36 pts in like 65 games. Comeau had 25 in 50 games. Is that so far off??? The stanley cup winning team vs the last place team. I would say those stats are pretty comparible.

You are comparing my comment about protecting the puck and mixing it up, with how his skates look and and shin pads???? Comeau is a N American player who’d most would take over Satan anyday of the week.

The bottom line is that if Satan was worth anything, 2nd tier or not……..the penguins would have extended his contract last year. Instead they sent him and his one way contract to the minors after NOONE picked him up on waivers. You can say whatever you want, and I can say whatever I want, but nothing speaks more than that.

  79. avatar mike says:

Satan SUCKED with Crosby and Malkin! Enough said.
Thank God we signed Thompson again I was worried where we were going to get his 2 goals from this year?
The more things change the more they stay the same.ENOUGH with these minor league players

  80. avatar Blizzard says:

Im not into an online fracas’ however Id take Comeau over Satan strait up any day.

  81. avatar Staten Islander says:

Hey, I know they’re options are limited at this point, but they GOTTA do better than Satan. SHEEEEEEESH

  82. avatar Joe says:

Instead of Lets Go Islanders: No more Miro!

  83. avatar orngfan says:

chris, for the money it would cost to sign satan, couldn’t we just sign tanguay for the same money? whats the problem here.. garth must have lost a bet with miro if he pulls this move on us.

  84. avatar Andy says:

Satan getting a contract for the new position of shooting coach? yuk yuk

  85. avatar Joe fred va says:

Alot of people forget Satan was sent down to the minors in the beginning of the playoffs and over the last 3 weeks of the year. He definitely lost a step. He played better once he was called up and did well in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Not sure how he will be motivated making bottom dollar and playing for a team with no chance at making the playoffs.

  86. avatar Tavares #1 says:

#60….did you miss the title? Botta said no thanks to Satan.

  87. avatar lav says:

    Yeah! Nasty Nate!

  88. avatar Chris Mc says:

Dont listen to Swan when it comes to Blake Comeau. Swans been hating on Comeau since last season like Blake stole his girl. Its a complete waste getting in an argument with him over Comeau.

CB seems to think Comeaus an important part of this rebuild and thats enough for me

  89. avatar Cary says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  90. avatar jethro09 says:

Miro Satan. What a waste of time. Why bother signing him? He’s exactly what the Isles don’t need: an old, slow perimeter player who’s best years are well behind him. Like CB said, no thanks.

  91. avatar Al Beezle says:

I’m sure CB and some of the rest of you saw Patrick Eaves go the way of the Bruins today, who promptly waived him and will buy out his contract. Another gentleman who could be a 3rd line player over Satan. Maybe I’m grabbing straws here, but there are better options with greater upside/opportunities than Satan.

  92. avatar jethro09 says:

To # 76: Tanguay and Satan are not comparable. Tanguay is waaaay better than Satan. At least while Tanguay may be a perimeter player, he’s a point-per-game perimeter player, something Satan hasn’t been since his Buffalo days.

  93. avatar Steve Moore says:

We should bring back Marius Czerkawski while were at it!!!!!

    ;P

  94. avatar Big Van Vader says:

    sATAN??? Again?!?!?

    No, spank you.

Anyone know when individual game tickets go on sale?

  95. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I keep wanting to read how they acquired Boogard from the Wild.

  96. avatar Netminder39 says:

This reminds me of when Yashin was trying to come back a few years ago. That didn’t happen. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, but to be honest I’d get Comeau signed before Satan.

  97. Didn’t we learn two years ago with Miro? Maybe this is a sign that Garth has no options in FA?

  98. avatar okpososcores21 says:

especially since he’s had an off year he has somethin to prove to the league I exspect satan to get his butt in gear with whatever team he ends up with.
It wouldn’t surprise me if satan has a great year

  99. avatar Brian h says:

Comparing Marius returning to the Isles and Satan returning is a bit different. When Marius left LI to go to Montreal, he was coming off a 22g, 51p season. Not bad for a bad team. He returned after a bad season in Montreal and gave us 25g, 49p. Still not bad. When Marius returned, he seemed to be a different player. He fought for the puck and seemed to really hustle, unlike his previous stint with the team.

I would pass on Satan and go for Afinogenov. He has the speed and still has the scoring touch, just needs to get the heck outta buffalo.

  100. avatar leviticus says:

please…no 4 minute goons who can’t play hockey!! (AKA enforcers)…and no Satan either!

  101. avatar MSA says:

We could do a lot worse then Miro, if the team isn’t going to spend real money. The guy is a class act, and I am sure could benefit the youngsters if the price was right. A lot of hate for a guy that played pretty hard here.

  102. avatar a REAL hockey fan says:

** Im VERY skeptical of Satan **

What UFAs are still avaialable, i will say the Isles young guys will get ‘tested’ in the divisional games for sure (probably most games) and the Isles need a some bigger more physical type players… Of course you need talent, but you need guys who are nog going to dog it and will bring effort and energy every nite, cmon Garth get a big mean’ish’ type player for the team…

  103. avatar Blizzard says:

Satan is just gonna take a kids spot and stunt his development. I would pass.

  104. avatar pat says:

    NO SATAN!!!!!!!

  105. avatar hud says:

Satan, loved being an Islander. Try to get maxim or tanguay, if that fails, miro not a bad consolation.

  106. avatar Glen S says:

so what your saying is free season on JT. I agree no 4 minute hockey player BUT we need someone to protect the young core of this team. Give me Andy (I think) Peter’s and be done with it….

  107. avatar john says:

Thompson is a good signing. He a good 4th line player. As for Satan, no thanks. He’s way to SLOW! Can you give Tambellini a break. I personally see him having a productive year. Just let him skate and shoot!

  108. avatar Willis says:

Good arguments on both sides. I still think he could teach the kids a few things and I’m sure he’d work real hard to be worth enough to be taken by some team in January. I guess I’m not confident that he could hold up real long in Scotty Gordon’s system. I think he’d try but fail, which would do nothing for HIS goal of being traded, nor ours of getting rid of him so someone from the bridge could get a chance last half. I don’t think Garth will pursue this very much.

Funny, wasn’t it last summer we heard some rumor that Yashin’s agent was talking to Garth Snow about maybe coming back? LOL and then everyone got on the sites and talked about it for a few days like it maybe was really gonna happen. I guess it’s just our “summer joke story”. Whatever keeps us on the sites. Wonder who it’ll be next year?

  109. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Satan? Ummm, no. Tanguay? Ummm, yes.

  110. avatar Bob says:

Satan sucks and so does Thompson, end of story.

  111. avatar Ajax says:

    that sucks

  112. avatar mht says:

Say no to Miro!If the Rangers lose their arbitration hearing this week with Nik Zherdev and make him an ufa.then go after him. Also I would give a shot to Taylor Pyatt.

  113. avatar Jeff in Oyster Bay says:

Please god no more Miro, u gotta being kiddin me with this loaf.

  114. avatar Tony F. says:

Please tell me this is joke, he couldn’t even stay with the penguins with Crosby centering him. He’s slow as @@@t! What’s the point unless he’s paying the Islanders to play. End on a high note Miro and call it a career.

  115. avatar isles316 says:

I think Satan got a bad rap here. He played almost every game, never complained and put the puck in the net more frequently than just about any current Islander.
I’m not saying we should sign him, but people are reacting to this news like it’s Yashin. Satan did some good things here.

  116. avatar Chris TMC says:

Youre right isles316 some people have very short and selective memories. Miro was a good player here on LI and the only time he didnt produce was when he was hurt. He was definitely not the uncaring “floater” some people are imagining him to be. He was not a half-hearted player, he was not lazy, any of the mean things Im seeing here. Its simply not true. HOWEVER, I dont think it can be doubted that his production has declined significantly- and there is no way to know if it is ever coming back. He is no longer worthy of the kind of money he probably still wants. The plus is that Miro is now old enough for an incentive-laden, bonus-based contract. He can be signed for a low base salary and make his money if he produces, plays a certain number of games, etc. That alone makes it wise for a team to give him a contract- as long as it is performance based.

I dont think it is going to happen here, honestly- but I would be OK if it did, as long as the price was right. And Id bet that it was Miro and his agent that contacted the Isles, not the other way around. I dont think Miro sold his home here on LI and he has stated before how much his family liked it here. Also, dont underestimate the attraction that the atlantic divisions travel scedule has for older guys who have done their share of travel and guys who want to see their families/kids more… you get to sleep in your own bed in this division more than any other in the NHL.

  117. avatar jack bell says:

I read this earlier today, both parts of this story(?)…wasn’t sure how to react, what to think…the more I look at this, the more it makes sense. Thompson…captain at Providence, in the Bruin system, agrees to terms on a 2 way deal, which means at worst that he spends time down(?) at the Bridge. This is a good thing, if we keep in mind the signing of Jeremy Reich, formerly of the Providence system. By the way, also a captain there. Both of them have NHL playing time under their belts and could easily shuttle back and forth as needed (need I mention Reich’s willingness to play a physical game (wink wink)…and we all know how badly we are going to be slapped around AGAIN this coming season. What Thompson lacks in fighting ability, Reich surely makes up for.

This brings me to Miro Satan. The more I mull this over, maybe he is a short term fix for some offense. He is obviously at a point in his career where he can’t afford to coast his way through a long schedule. So signing him to a one year, one way contract, if the price is right (I’m thinking in the 1.5 mil or so range), may give us a little more offensive production. He could rotate in and out of the top 3 lines. Who knows, maybe he can pot 20?

Snow has a plan, and seems to be committed to it, so I’m willing to see how camp shakes out, but in the meantime, I as many other posters here and at other boards believe, that more could be done to get ready for the season. I like the idea of offering Pyatt a deal, as I think he really needs a change and I really don’t think I need to go over why. He does have some ability, is still young and is a big body, something we could sorely use. While I would love to see Snow bring in a heavyweight, I don’t want it to be a the expense of a full time roster spot. I think 40-45 games is sufficient GP for what the role requires and I don’t particularly have a preference as to who that player is or could be. If Rechlicz is the guy that steps up, I’m fine wtih him in the position. If I had a wish list at this point, I’d love to see Garth pull off a deal for a guy like Gleason in Carolina…maybe offer up Comeau? Just some thoughts…

  118. avatar JPinVA says:

316, I agree. this fan base throws people under the bus better than any other in sports.
When you’re leading scorer and starting goaltender will get 1/2 price movie tickets when they show their AARP cards, you probably shouldn’t complain as much as you do.
Miro was a pretty damn good Islander. He came here and pretty much gave up his offensive play because there was no support, and he played for a coach that wanted to win with the rag tag defense he was given… which meant more defensive responsibilities for the forwards.
three years on Gilligan’s Island, Leading scorer, Second leading scorer and third leading scorer… and missed 3 games in those three years.
Yeah, i see it… the guy sucked. How about he was a Buffalo guy that probably wanted to see ted succeed. Imagine that, a player who might want to WIN.
Put your pitchforks away… he’s not coming here to be dealt at the deadline anyway. He’ll probably go somewhere they can use a third line guy with 15 goal potential that will do anything the coach asks, like play the point on the powerplay.

  119. avatar dalcy says:

sykora/afinigenov/satan pick your poison. i’ll take the guy who scored the game winner for al arbour’s 1500th.

  120. avatar Tavares #1 says:

@#115….so what he played every game? How about producing? It is amazing how low the standards are here.

  121. avatar neologizer says:

lets see Miro had 17 goals 35pts (+1)last season Tanguay had 16 goals 41 pts (+2)

OK clearly Miro sucks and Tanguay is the man

    Last season
    Miro made $3.5 million
    Tanguay made $5.4 million

Clearly Tanguay is a bargain compared to Miro

Tanguay is 31 and his production has sharply decreased the last 3 seasons

Miro is going on 35 and his production has slowly decreased from 3 years ago and been the same the last 2 seasons

Clearly the Isles should sign Tanguay to a long term deal rather than Miro to a short one

WTF???? are you arm chair GMs talking about ?????? Yeah Miro sucks but Snow should sign Tanguay to a multi-year deal????

Hate to tell you but a 1 year Miro deal is going to be way better for the Isles then a multi-year Tanguay offer

  122. avatar Isle be Damned says:

that would be such a pointless move. i’d rather Joensuu just play in the NHL all year then Satan. That is a step backwards. Either get the enforcer the team needs or go for Tanguay to fill that spot. Satan makes no sense for this club now.

  123. avatar 4195 mary says:

Satan better be a bargain. That’s the only way they should sign him. We know he is talented and durable, but he better be cheap. One million ,tops.

  124. avatar Robert says:

As far as Thompson getting a two way deal, I am pretty happy about that because it gives us a little more flexibility in giving a Justin Dibenidetto or a Matt Martin a look late in the season, if they earn it with a good season at Bridgeport (I know Martin isn’t signed yet). Thompson is a decent role player with good heart, but getting a looksy at Dibo and/or Martin would be exciting, as they mean more to the team in terms of our overall rebuild.
As far as Satan, sounded crazy to me when I first read it, but a one year deal at a bargain rate (like the Biron deal) wouldn’t be all that bad if we don’t want to spend the extra money and go after Tanguay. We need someone with good natural offensive skill to play with Tavares/Bailey this year until we find a more long term solution. Satan has decent skill left, not to mention good size and wheels for a guy used as a stopgap player to take some pressure off Tavares, Bailey, and Okposo for a year… why not! And like people were saying about Biron, maybe he turns into a 2nd, 3rd or 4th round draft pick.

  125. avatar BillyBC says:

#119 makes a good point on Miro and Tanguay.

  126. avatar zblizzard says:

No he doesn’t make a good point. Look at games played. Also look at position. No one is saying Tanguay is the man. Just saying he is better that Miro. I would put Tanguay on LW on our top line in a heartbeat. Tanguay was going along pretty good last year until he was injured. I know I had him on my fantasy team lol.

  127. avatar robby d says:

No effin way! Satan is as soft as they come. Please NO!

  128. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Nate on a one year / two way … perfect insurance signing without giving up a roster spot.
    ***
Miro? Hymmm … intruiging … we all know that Miro loves Long Island … perhaps Miro’s big push to return … Snow of course is going to listen.

Huge impact for Comeau’s negotiations. Just more bullets to Snow’s negotiation options. For both party’s sakes I hope that Comeau signs soon. He may be looking at a two way if Snow has no more roster spots due to all the one way deals … and there is NO WAY he’s going to banish his 3 top offensive young stars to Bridgeport to make room for Comeau.

  129. avatar IslesFanInBkNY says:

Miro is a good hockey player and he was a good Islander. Just remember his goal to Devils wits less than a second left, when he almost climbed over the glass or his Al Arbour game? This guy doesn’t deserve all this garbage being thrown out his way here.

  130. avatar IslesFanInBkNY says:

Miro is a good hockey player and he was a good Islander. Just remember his goal to Devils wits less than a second left, when he almost climbed over the glass or his Al Arbour game? This guy doesn’t deserve all this garbage being thrown his way here.

  131. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Here’s something to think about … not that it really means much … but ….

Nate Thompson signed after doing his I.C.E. tour … Comeau is up this week … perhaps this breaks the ice … no pun intended … and Comeau signs by the end of his week on the I.C.E. tour.

  132. avatar jon from nj says:

If they sign him, it would be typical islanders…1 step forward, 2 steps back. he is a waste and doesn’t fit the scheme Gordon seeks to implement.

  133. avatar Un Beaver says:

I always liked Miro and would like to have him back for a season. He could be frustrating to watch at times as he often looked like he was ready to go off ice once the puck wasn’t in his reach, but he was a solid player with a great shot.

  134. avatar Miket says:

Miro stay away from the light..er…lighthouse

  135. avatar nyichamp39 says:

I would take him if he didnt come with normal Miro Satan expectations. As long as he got a 1.5 mil dollar one year contract and understood he would be relegated to third line wing duty then it cant hurt to have someone who can put the puck in the net on a regular basis.

  136. avatar Dan says:

signing satan for a dollar over the league minimum would be a travesty

  137. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

    Here’s food for thought…

I don’t have as many bad memories of Satan as a lot of people have displayed here… Honestly … I think Miro has something to give a team in the right situation… He’s a fundamentally sound player … just no where near his peak.

That being said … if I was going to go back to the future … I’d reach back to a former Islander drafted pre-Milbury and have a look at Todd Bertuzzi … He’s not going to fill the net like he used to … but he’s got the size and toughness to protect JT on his wing … and actually might be able to chip in some offense.

  138. avatar miket239 says:

If we’re not gonna try to get anyone like Tanguay etc, I dont see the harm in picking up Miro for a year. He’s gonna score 20 goals (maybe more) and maybe he’d feel more comfortable with a bunch of young players that he could mentor. Having him on the PP wouldnt hurt. He’s not a bad veteran goal scorer. I wouldnt want us to overpay for him is the only negative I could see.

  139. avatar Chris TMC says:

zblizzard (126): You say that no one is saying Tanguay is the man? I think plenty of people have been, actually. I wouldnt mind him either but sheesh, there are some Isles fans out there acting like he is amazing and not signing him is unfathomable!

  140. avatar Swan says:

I can’t state the arguments about Satan better than Chris TMC or neo #121.

For the record, I really do like Comeau but he is strictly a lower-level, borderline NHL player in my eyes and definitely doesn’t deserve the fandom I see. I hope he proves me wrong. I’m pretty sure he won’t.

I certainly don’t hate Comeau. The only Islander I ever hated was Kirk Muller.

  141. avatar Steve N says:

Satan? well, i think good and bad. He did great in pitt, but I don’t how he would do here again. It seems like some fans aren’t happy about it. Garth, sign Tanguay!

  142. avatar art says:

Tanguay has a very bad shoulder and that is why he is still available. Then there is Tamby the king of floaters, and then ther is Satan who if he came for 750k would be an option.

  143. avatar Kbulger22 says:

Everyone expected 40 goal Satan when he got here, and we got 25 goal Satan, so I understand where a lot of this vitriol is coming from. But how can you complain about signing a 25 goal scorer with 35 goal potential if it comes at the right price?

  144. avatar Brian in VA says:

Please don’t rip Chow! He was a good Islander! He did score 25 goals that year! You guys can bash me but I loved Chow!

  145. avatar Ethan K says:

I don’t see how Satan could help the team at all… he’s considered a mediocre goal scorer. Maybe if he was a good passer, he could work with Tavares. However, I feel as though he wouldn’t really fit on any line.

  146. avatar Irish Isle says:

I really dont have the time to go through all 145 posts, but it seems weird to me that Allen Walsh would let the world know he’s in negotiations w/ Garth. We know that Garth appreicates/desires secrecy. He doesn’t want others to know what his gameplan is. And the fact Walsh put this on twitter just goes against everything.

  147. avatar Domincd1 says:

#130 Im with you! The guy is out of his prime of course but he likes it here and Wants to play here. When he was here he was consistent. Granted he skates like a slug but he still could bury the puck certainly just as good or if not better than any player on this roster now. Miro is most effective down low and with decent passing from some of the kiddies he may prove to be effective this time around.
If the price tag is good…I say “Welcome Back Miro!”

  148. avatar Isle74 says:

I have been to a few Islander open practice sessions in the past, and Satan and Yashin were always first off the ice. I would not want Satan even if he played for free. He is slow, soft and over the hill. Not what we need!!! I agree with Isles in NJ regarding Bertuzzi, If they want to go with an older vet.

  149. avatar Mike in Bohemia says:

Lets face it, he’d wind up a top 3 scorer on this team, even with a mediocre season. I think it would be great to have him if the price was right for a short term.
And please, dont worry about it hurting the rebuild. Most of the young guys are definitely not NHL ready. Look how everyone b****ed & moaned that Bailey wasn’t ready last year (which he was’nt, he was’nt strong enough to win any face-offs). If an average to good scorer like Satan can help in the short term, I’m fine with that.
And Miro, if your reading this, thanks for the tremendous effort potting 2 goals in the 3rd period on Al Arbour’s return, turning a loss into a win. Only one post (of 147) in this blog had mentioned it (way to go, dalcy!). How soon they forget.

  150. avatar louie dapuck says:

The problem is…too many people are thinking the exciting finish to last season plus Taveres equals playoffs. It Won’t! We are a few years away still. There are NO quick fixes. Not Taguay, not Satan ,not Afigenov. Wang and Garth are going to spend the cap minimun this year, see what happens with a new building and keep all eyes on 2010-11. And thats OK.
A top 5 pick in next years draft will solidify a still thin organization and really set us up nice. Imagine scoring Taylor Hall as a left wing for JT. Relax, fellow Isles fans. One more year of suffering for a BRIGHT future. We wont be as bad as last year because we have real goalies this year.
    Party on Garth.

  151. avatar neologizer says:

IMHO I don’t see Miro being a great fit for the team right now but a short contract for him is better then bringing in Tanguay (surely a big multi-year). I don’t get why the huge interest in him here. Isles cap hit is over $40mil now why not save the space and get a bargain when another team is desperately trying to make space.

I don’t know how he is in the mentor department but he would be the only veteran accomplished scorer on a team looking to develop JT into an elite young scoring machine

Also he is really smooth on the OT SO and would probably bring the Isles a few more wins in that department alone

Lastly who is he going to take time from? Tamby?

  152. avatar jack says:

satan was benched for so many of pits games, even sent down, what would we sign him for his defensive skills. this ship has sailed he has no skills left. we commited to kids, keep the commitment, rather use the money and sign martin.

  153. avatar Dan says:

Satan is definitely a floater. We could do better with other offensive talent that is left. We definitely need someone tough. I hope Snow adds some more help up front and personally I wish we would get help on Defense too. No one wants Schneider for one year?
