THE STANLEY CUP IS COMING TO LONG ISLAND
Courtesy of Bill Guerin and his family of “Islanders”
Class move by Billy Guerin. Instead of using his one day with the Stanley Cup this summer to bring it home to Massachusetts, he’s delivering it to a place dear to his family’s heart: Long Island.
“I have four kids, and all their friends are there,” the former Islanders captain told The Republican. “This is their turn to celebrate.”
Comments on Bill Guerin’s decision.

Good for Billy and his family. It’s been a while since his last one. Just don’t let any of the current Islanders touch it!
Class move.
I like Guerin and what he did on the Islanders. I can’t help think that this is a little FU to Gordon and the Organization. And good for him, if that is the case.
I am much more of a Guerin fan than a Gordon one. My jury is still out on this inexperienced coach who hasn’t coached a championship team on any level, even lower junior. Injuries, blah, blah, blah. Bottom line, your philosophy and coaching abilities were good enough finish as the worst team in your league. We’ll see what happens with Tavares and 2009-10. Not holding my breath.
Guerin is the one who, during the lockout, stated that he didn’t care if the the league and players would ever come to an agreement and wouldn’t care if the league folded.
I never liked him after that.
This really is a cool thing for him to do. And what a treat that will be for all his kids’ friends here on LI! I personally rooted for Pittsburgh as the POs went on because, yea sure they are great and all, but I also knew it was my only chance to see four Islanders win a cup together for what I imagine will be a little while. (You gotta take what you can get lol.)
Anyway I hope your family enjoys your day, Billy… you earned it!
Not counting the promotional displays at the Coliseum, is this the first time the Cup has been on Long Island since Nick Kypreos brought it to Belmont Park in ‘94? Could be.
Guerin’s been on the downside of his career for years now and is a shell of the player he once was. Have some class and retire with a ring and call it quits.
I saw too many shifts here on the Island where he just mailed it in to have any respect for him.
As far as I’m concerned, give me Dougie Weight any day of the week over Guerin.
bill guerin…class act. everyone can say what they want, but bill cared about the islanders and long island. thanks billy!
Congratz to Billy great guy and glad for him and his family.
WE WON WE WON The Stanley Cup is back on Long Island. New York Islanders captain Bill Guerin hoists the Stanley Cup! Only problem is he is wearing a different teams jersey lol
The Capitals must be kicking themselves for not trading a second round pick for Bill Guerin. Who knows? Guerin might have helped the Caps advance instead of helping to eliminate them.
Then again, Garth probably would have drafted a third goaltender with that higher pick.
Way to go Billy. Great guy.
we love u billy!
Gotta say I’m glad he got it this year.
Pardon me if I offer a different take on this.
It’s not a class move by Guerin, it’s a strictly personal and selfish move.
And I don’t blame him for it…one bit.
But shame on us for “feeling good” about it.
How many years are we gonna be content with our Judeo-Christian guilt ridden backgrounds and allow players from a foreign team to run his championship banner on our soil? (Well, not mine anymore, I’m two time zones away).
GET THE DAMN CUP!!
Nothing disgusted me more than seeing pictures of Scotty Gomez parading the Cup in one of my old watering holes in Alaska.
With one of my old friends (the owner…who knew nothing about hockey).

Good for Bill Geurin..now get that damn thing out of my face.
Geurin is the man. Very classy move.
The more media attention the NHL gets here on the Island the better, all things considered…
A classy move by a classy guy.
How is this an example of class? This has nothing to do with the Islanders. He is bringing the cup to his kids home so they and their friends can enjoy it, I’m guessing a lot of guys do that. Did anyone hear what Guerin had to say at the Pens cup parade? He certainly didn’t mind making fun of the Isles in front of that crowd. I like what he did with the Islanders, but please let’s not praise for no reason.
i really could care less…let the cup stay off the Island until the ISLANDERS bring it here…
I thought Bill might have taken a shift off here and there at the end of his Islander career. Can you blame him for being discouraged? As far as I’m concerned he was a good Islander during his tenure here and I’m glad he got to win the cup. Classy move to bring it to the Island for the day.
How do you not love Billy G? I pulled the the pens all because of Guerin……….although i almost threw up in my mouth at the site of Satan hoisting the cup. Satan didnt wanna hold it up over his head too long, beacuse it was too heavy for him…..
Nice move by BG but I would have to assume it was coming to LI anyway with Scuderi? Unless hes taking it out to LA with him.
he deserves it. congrats billy. very nice.
There should be two days for the Cup on Long Island considering Rob Scuderi will probably bring the Cup to Long Island for a day also.
Wonder if he is going to invite any of his old Isles teammates over?
YAAAAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNN! Give us some scoop Chris, This story is like padding a bra, it looks good until you take a closer look.
Let the Island be viewed positively by The Media. I agree! The more we are viewed as a hockey crazy area….the better.
Let all the NHLers who live on Long Islander bring all their friends and canadian media to Long Island to see places that are not the slab of concrete in Hempstead.
Good for Billy to win the cup and bring it HOME to LI. Hopefully the next time it visits will be when we win it in 2 years.
great move by guerin for the simple fact that he puts his family first, his kids are on LI and their friends are there. What could be more perfect for a kid than to share the cup with his friends!
One night I’m at home watching the isles on tv. They show a shot of the cup,my 6 yearold daughter says i took a picture with that trophy at school. I tell my wife you call me for all kind of nonsense and you dont tell me the cup was at the kids school. I was furious. If he lived in new jersey he would be bringing the cup there. Its nice for his kids friends. beyond that who cares.
There will a couple new rings to that cup before we ever see it again.
class move on his part.
class move by Billy and hopefully its not the last time we see the Cup on LI.
If his family wasn’t still living on the island he would have brought it somewhere else .. non-story .. who cares, we have bigger issues to be concerned about … sorry CB…
Nice, I’d like it more if he’d have been wearing Blue and Orange when he won it
Where else would he bring it… He lives on the Island.
If he wanted to show class he should have thanked Garth for the opportunity to play for the Cup.
I like billy and all, but he lives here and this has nothing to do wiith the islanders. Take it to massachusetts for all we care.
IslesSay (19): Its true that it doesnt have anything to with the Islanders ie the team, this is about Islanders as in Long Islanders, and its about hockey. I heard Guerin thanking Charles Wang and Garth Snow for his opportunity after winning the cup. Saying Guerin has been making fun of the Islanders has even less weight IMO than people being mad at Komisarek.
(27): LOL- what scoop can we all expect at this point? Its July, the draft and day 1 of FA are over, and camp is months away. It isnt anybodys fault that it isnt hockey season right now, IMO theres nothing to complain about in that.
Wow are fan base is jaded now… First its a Garth Snow love fest for all his brilliant moves that have brought us NOTHING! Now its Billy G is so classy! For What just going back to his residence for the past two years and showing the cup off to his family and friends… Jeez the next thing will be Gordon is the next Arbour; Oh wait comparisons to the first year for both were already made but the problem is that Torrey actually built a winner for Al. Gordon will just Overskate our AHL scrubs into Groin pulls! Thanks Snow and Boston buddy Gordon.. KC anyone???
Maybe he should just mail the Cup in to Long Island, like he did with his play the last 3 months of the season.
Well … even though Billy was a trade deadline addition to the Pens … he was there battling for 4 rounds and actually helped the 10th place (at the time of the trade) Penguins get into the playoffs and get a good seeding.
So those that spit on Guerin’s Stanley Cup celebration would also be spitting on Butch Goring’s 1980 cup victory.
I’m glad that BG got another shot at the cup and will even have another shot next year. He ended up staying with “his” team who he provided leadership and goals on the way to the cup. The fact he calls Long Island his home and is brining the cup here should be a compliment to Long Islanders … and is only positive press for the area at large. Besides … Lord Stanley has to get used to the Island for the next decade.
Well … Billy did say when he signed with the Islanders in the summer of ‘07 that his goal was to bring the Cup back to Long Island …
Did he lie?
#41 - lol
The only class move, is the fact he is doing it for his kids, which he should anyway. But he is a class act in my eyes. He most likely will make LI his home, until is his kids graduate. Since his family has moved alot in the past.
I like Bill Guerin and what he has accomplished throughout his career. I only wish we could have snagged Godard back from Pittsburgh in the trade along with the 3rd Rd. pick. Congratulation to BG & EG on winning their Stanley Cup. Now lets bring one home for real to Long Island!!!
class move from a class player.
I like Billy, I really do, but this isn’t anything special and I actually rooted for Detroit to win the Cup. He’s not an Islander and he wanted to leave so why should I care?
congrats to bill guerin for helping the pens win the cup…good for him and his kids friends, for a chance to see the cup..Its obvious the guy and his wife and kids made friends while on the Island..Its for them that he does this for..A true gentlemen. A true friend. A classy man. Who cares if he performed bad down the stretch for us? He was misinformed about a rebuilding project..He tried..But as a man gets older, he wants to win..Like we all do. Give the guy a damn break. Geez, some of you fans out there, just don’t get sometimes. I feel sorry for people like that. You must be miserable in your lives.
this is not a class act move for anybody but guerin’s kid’s and there friends. it wasnt bad enough that our captain was traded during the season, then won the cup with another team, now he has to bring the cup to Long Island and rub it in our faces, after he already commited to staying with the penguins!
THIS SUX!
Congrats Billy. I know it sucks seeing our captain traded and then win the cup, but he was nothing but professional when with the NYI. I’m glad for him.
I’m afraid to ask this but has anyone ever put together a list of former Isles to win the cup after we traded them or let them go?
I don’t get what is classy about his at all. It has nothing to do with the Islanders, Long Island is just where he lives. The cup will probably come here anyway because of Scuderi (his mom was my chemistry teacher…he’s a better dman that she is a teacher)
And the comment about Satan I don’t agree with. Sorry, but Guerin NEVER played well for the Islanders. Satan didn’t light it up either, but he did play half a season with a broken foot bc we were in a playoff race. And he was injured the next season too and toughed it out. He didn’t put up the numbers that we hoped for, but he gave his best to help the team. Guerin just put up crap numbers, took MANY games off and then asked to be traded….GREAT captain.
I work at a bar in huntington and guerin and company came down with the cup this past sat night. We got pics and he let me and the other doorman of the bar hold it. It was glorious!!
Hey Opie, to even attempt to say that Guerin never played well for the isles is ridiculous!! He was their leader and sure he isn’t putting up his old numbers but he held his own and at least had grit unlike your pansy Satan. What the hell has he done in the last 5 years. The guy is a joke, plays soft and did nothing while with the Islanders. Broken foot he played with?, seriously that’s your excuse for him? I will take an aging Guerin over Satan every single time.
