HEY, GOT ANY ROOM FOR ANOTHER GOALIE?
Weslosky, whose grades “fell short,” off to Bemidji

by admin on August 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

UPDATED at 3:20 pm – Islanders goalie prospect Jase Weslosky is transferring to Bemidji State. Weslosky, a 2006 4th round pick, was ruled “academically ineligible” to play at St. Cloud State. (Details and stats here from USCHO). He now has to sit out a year, and the Islanders – pending an NHL ruling on a complicated matter - could lose his rights per the CBA on Aug. 15, 2010.

Islanders brass has to decide if Weslosky is a prospect worth signing. Scouts that Point Blank has spoken with believe he has “NHL ability,” “has the tools and the guts” and is “definitely worth a try, starting in the ECHL.” The St. Cloud captain called Weslosky’s loss, “A blip on our radar. We’ve moved past it.” Niiiiiice.

It’s possible that, by falling short academically, Weslosky may have screwed up his chance to someday play in the NHL.

    This is funny.

    1) The kid chose a bad time to need a team. Last season he might have landed a gig on the big squad! ; )

  3. avatar Jon Mac says:

Can we trade any of these guys? There has got to be a team in the NHL in need of some solid depth in net.

  4. avatar isles99 says:

i thought snow only drafts character players? well, where is the academic character with this kid? this is just pure stupidity….come one get your act together and try harder in school

  5. avatar Matt says:

#4, Neil Smith drafted Weslosky in 2006. I would sign him and let him fight for a spot in the AHL or ECHL. We need all of the goaltending prospects we could get.

  6. avatar Jon Mac says:

Does this mean he will have to sit out this season?

  7. avatar sec. 308 says:

How bad is it when you’re too dumb for St. Cloud State?

  8. avatar the bomber says:

i really have to hand it to this kid. its almost belushi-esque to get thrown out of St Cloud St for academics when you are on a hockey scholarship. very well done jake. i see a future for you in the isles front office….

  9. avatar Warren says:

Okay fans we know we have the goaltending for the future Lets work on the other parts of the team. But keep the faith onward towards the CUP for this year.

    “(including returning Rick)”

Yea OK, give it a rest already Botta.

  11. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

As per Wangs request, isles going to be first team to play a line of goalies on the ice as shut down line. thats why we loaded up on goalies in off season.

Strategy is to have tavares score. then bring out the line of Fowards DP, Weslosky, and ROLOSON. defense of Koskinen and Anders Nilsson. And BIRON in net. All will be in goalie pads of course. It will revolutionize the game forever.

  12. avatar Al Beezle says:

I’m interested also (if anyone knows any more than myself) what is the situation of Stefan Ridderwall as well? He was another guy that I believe some thought could be a pro player, I think he’s starting over in the Swedish top league, or maybe Finland right now?

  13. avatar art says:

CB I know this is fresh news but enough already. The Ice Girls would be a fresher subject. The pun is intended!!!

  14. avatar Isles6 says:

I know, I know, but this is why this is the best blog in the world…we fans keep our fingers crossed every day we click.

  15. avatar nightfly says:

Even if Garth had drafted him, well, one swing and a miss in the character department doesn’t invalidate the process.

It’s just another example of how hard it is to be a professional athlete – one needs the raw talent, the opportunities, the mental makeup, and then to have one’s head screwed on properly not to squander chances, any of which may be the last one.

  16. avatar Matt Scordato says:

Chris, do we know why this kid’s grades fell off? Perhaps its for reasons out of his control.

  17. avatar Staten Islander says:

I foresee an all goalie penalty kill unit

  18. avatar cgs878 says:

Academic probation? I thought that goalies were smart.

  19. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

So where was this kid in the pecking order of goaltending prospects for the Isles?

Kinda cold the way the St. Cloud State captain described the situation. A blip? Geeeezee!!

  20. avatar MattNC says:

    Weslosky…zero…point…zero.

  21. avatar Sean S says:

This has nothing to do with this story but I just wanted to say thnks to you for this website and all these updates and stories that we most likely never would have heard of if not for you. Stay stong CB.

  22. avatar Al L says:

So Weslosky is projected to be a 5th starter? How is his curve ball. Perhaps we can have a goalie rotation, dress three each night and build a bullpen in the runway!

  23. avatar BrianAlbany says:

So am I correct that we have the rights to at least 9 goalies?

    DP,Biron,Roloson,Koskinen,Lawson,Poulin,Ridderwall, Weslosky,and Nilson?

Not to mention the 12 yrs left on the contract, but seriously where do we put them all.

I think CB said it best when he mentioned…If DP is truly going to be back eventually, what was all this for? Was the non-drafting of other prospects and spending the money for 2-3 goalies worth it?? I’ve tried to be really positive lately on the Isles but this really frustrates me.

  24. avatar Chris TMC says:

19 ISLE in NJ 22 (20): If I had to guess he was probably lowest on the pecking order, the farthest away from the NHL out of all the goalies. But thats not a knock against him, he is promising but just a kid.

I agree that the captain sounded COLD saying that, but his coach on the other hand said that Weslosky “fell just short of fulfilling his obligations to be a student-athlete” and that “he is a fine young man and we wish him all the best.” So maybe the Captain is just blunt? Or a jerk? I dont know… but to be fair to him, he has to concentrate on his own situation and the team he does have- and if Weslosky isnt part of it, I guess he doesnt have any reason to continue to worry about him.

BrianAlbany (24): DiPietro, Roloson, Biron, Koskinen, Lawson, and Munroe have AHL or NHL contracts- only 3 of them are NHL contracts. Poulin, Ridderwall, Nilson, and Weslosky do not have contracts (though Poulin had a bit of a stint last year with the AHL, dont know whats going on after that.) Yeah it seems like a lot of goalies, but in total they have only two more than they did last year… you know, when people complained that the Isles had no depth at the positon? I think most teams have 7-10 goalies in their organization… I will have to do some poking around and check it out.

  25. avatar Steven says:

We really could use some good news around here. It’s been really depressing around here lately. The season has not even started and the sky is falling already and fans are already writing off the last draft.

  26. avatar Benny From Sweden says:

    Al Beezle:

Being from Sweden I can update you on the Ridderwall situation.

Last year his team in Sweden Djurgården tabbed him as their no1 goalie. Unfortunatley he did not live up expectations and did not play much during the second half of the season. This year he is starting at the back up goalie for his team. The no1 goalie is not a big name goalie though so if he plays well he could very well be their top goalie again.
I would however doubt that Ridderwall ever makes it to the NHL. I could happen if he improves considerably this coming season and perhaps next.

  27. avatar Brooks Simpson says:

Last year, Garth stockpiled draft choices. This year, it’s goalies. Wanna take bets on next year?

  28. avatar MJS says:

Nice to see that his departure really shattered the team dynamic. Really awesome.

I actually believe that someone could find his or herself on academic probation at a school like St. Cloud State relatively easily. I mean, really, what else is there to do around there but party? Who can say with any kind of straight face that most kids in the 18-22 year range would choose studying over partying? Weslosky’s just being one of the crowd.

  29. avatar CIsle says:

Interesting quote by the captain. Doesn’t speak all that much in favor of Jase. The freshly drafted and highly touted Lee is heading there anyways, so that probably has much to do with any disinterest in Weslosky.

His 08-09 season was EXTREMELY strong: 2.12 GAA and .931 save percentage.

  30. avatar Leviticus says:

#28, A Lee is heading to the USHL and then Notre Dame from what I read.

  31. avatar KO21 says:

Is it me or does CB seem to have a different tone since the Isles dropped the blog from sponsoring? I think he’s less biased and speaks his mind allot better. There might be less write ups but the ones here are more critical and better. IMHO

  32. avatar KO21 says:

I love the way CB doesn’t hold back now that the Isles dropped Pointblank. Love the unbiased, candid, no holds barred writing. Maybe there’s less to read but when CB has something to write he doesn’t have any bias anymore. I’m liking how he’s holding the Isles accountable.

  33. avatar Chris TMC says:

The Islanders official page still links right to this site, its not like they “dropped” him the way youre saying.

And honestly, his writing is exactly the same.

  34. avatar KO21 says:

I dissagree. I noticed a much critical approach from Chris Botta.

The Isles are no longer sponsoring the blog so they did indeed drop Pointblank as an official blog. I like that CB has been calling them out allot harder now regarding the way they are handeling the draft, prospects, and the overwhelming moves or nonmoves made to bulk up on goalies and pass up on offense and size. CB’s critical approach literally caused DP and the Isles to go to the Isles Beat writer to counteract what CB was implying about DP and the way the Isles haven’t been forthcoming to their fans. CB is helping to keep em honest.

    Keep it up, Chris!
