ISLANDERS ICE GIRLS TRYOUTS!
Four lousy photos! No real news to report!

Point Blank on Twitter

According to the newly-Tweeting Katie Strang -  I told you she’d kick butt on the web - there wasn’t a whole lot doing when a trio of young kinda-Islanders signed autographs as individual game tickets went on sale at the team store. “Not too big of a turnout for ticket sales event at NYI team store,” Tweeted the Uniondale Strangler. “Guess a nice-weather summer Saturday is a tough time to draw a crowd…”

An August 15 on-sale event a month after the John Tavares hype subsided and a month before the training camp coverage begins may not have been the way to go. As Katie said, Long Islanders have other priorities if they’re going to get in the car in the summer. Still, I’m sure sales on the internet were solid and the Islanders will report strong business during the week.

But there was another major Islanders event today. You know what I’m talking about…Ice Girls auditions!

No official word on the results, but my kids and I overheard a scoop during Sean Kingston’s set at the Power 105 Mega-Jam in Medford tonight. Looks like two new Women of Islanders Ice have been selected.

As for these pictures, yeah…they’re not going to win any Pulitzers. This video from newsday.com of the tryouts may. (It’s worth it just to hear my dear buddy Tim Beach of the Islanders talk about the Ice Girls’ responsibilities like they were joining the Peace Corps). Still, these rare photos are just our way of trying to keep you posted on all the crucial stuff in Islanders Country. It’s what we do.

Tasteful Comments. Some of that wacky nonsense I had to weed through after Katie got the Islanders’ beat is not going to last long. Thanks. The hockey talk continues in the next thread.

They seem like a good looking bunch… the ice girls aren’t exactly the prettiest faces. No disrespect.

As for the team store event, I’m sure a lot of people had the same thought process as me–I had planned on going to the event to get my tickets for opening night early, and then I got the e-mail about the internet presale and jumped on that right away.

Maybe one of the Ice Girls could play enforcer this year lol. Sorry CB had to say something.

  3. 3 Jay

Chris what is the status on PB in terms of how long are you going to keep going with it?

  4. 4 Staten Islander

Do any of them play goalie? Had to ask…….lol

  5. 5 Chris TMC

Staten Islander, we have enough goalies… we nead someone who can score! :D

  6. 6 rb

Can’t be an ice girl on my team unless you’re willing to slew foot Lundquist if he doesn’t get out of the crease.

  7. 7 Matt

good stuff on the ice girls!

I bought four games online this afternoon.

  8. 8 Domincd1

Locker room pic…..chic in the pink…..she has my vote!

  9. 9 Pete DeBenedetto

Hey, at least you posted something new.

  10. 10 Tavares #1

Isles PR department sucks without you.

  11. 11 miket239

Hot girls on skates…thats HOT. yeah baby. very grrrrrr.

  12. 12 19 Isle in NJ 22

Yeah CB … but how are they at maintaining the ice during stoppages? LOL!

I’m sorry to say, I when the Ice Girls come on the ice, I am so embarrased. Back in the days of winning Stanely Cups, you did not need gimmicks to get people to the rink. You needed NHL players. Why Chris King and Steve Mears to get cut?.. Most die-hard fans want coverage of the team to be the best. We lost that, but we have beautiful women, and it takes at least 6 of them to clean the ice. What a joke.

  14. 14 Joe fred va

Lundquist loves the Ice girls..He really likes when they clean the ice shavings by his net. Remember when he gave one girl a hard time and would not let her near his net so she could do her job..What a pud!!

  15. 15 isles 14

i’am going to the home opener.yea.i no this has nothing to do with the ice girls.but who cares

  16. 16 Kevin Fitz

Dog days of August! Training camp here yet?

  17. 17 Staten Islander

Chris TMC—point taken, i’m sure the ice girls have NOOOOOOO problem scoring, ok CB, I’m sorry, I’m evil, I’m SORRY……lol

  18. 18 Bill Scanlon

I agree with #6. These girls are going to need an intense full contact training seminar with the greatest crease clearer in NHL history. How soon can Smitty get there?

  19. 19 Jason

I mean.. agree with 13. It was 12 before.

  20. 20 Tony F.

I think post #13 hit the nail on the head. This should be a hockey team not a side show. Fire the ice girls and put the money into hockey coverage and at game promotions.

  21. 21 TuxTax

Hey, someone’s gotta clean the ice…why not some attractive young women

  22. 22 frank

    CB:
You have it all covered. Good job.
What is the status of IPB.

  23. 23 Big Van Vader

When do tickets go on sale at the box office?

  24. 24 Big Van Vader

This ticket NON event, did it even HAPPEN? When was this put in the news?? Anybody with a life during the summer on a saturday would have never known about it. Piss poor job by the Isles once again getting the word out. I mean, were these JUST for the team stores or was the box office involved too? Will they CONTINUE t be on sale at the stores or it was just for the weekend? Not alot of info out there about this non event.

  25. 25 geduffer

I’m not in favor of retaining the Ice Girls. It’s an idea whose time should never have come and should go away as soon as possible.

Re: Posts # 4 and 17 by Staten Islander

I thought I was only Islander fan on Staten Island…Glad to see I am not alone!!!

  27. 27 Chris Mc

If football and basketball teams can have cheerleaders why can a hockey team have ice girls. Would you rather have Nyisles back?

  28. 28 Roger Farina

I think the Ice Girls are a great way to get young girls connected to the game. When I go to Fayeteville Fireantz games they have dancers that perform in the stands and girls can join the junior squad. Personally I wish they would expand the role of the Ice Girls even more to give young girls on LI something to strive for in the sporting and entertainment realm. Well that is until the NHL gets off it’s but and creates the WHNL.

I have three girls at home and things like this which I do not believe - exploits woman - are great.

My question Chris, has being an Ice Girl given any of the IG alumni a launching pad for something greater?

  29. 29 Mike L

I dont get why people want to fire the Ice Girls? The NHL made a rule that the home team must have people shovel the snow by the crease a certain amount of times during the game. If Wang were to fire the Ice Girls, he’d still have to hire more people to do the same job.

  30. 30 Chris TMC

Big Van Vader (24): They had it all over their site and many of the blogs mentioned it. Katie mentioned it, too. They cant force the newspapers care and talk about it over and over, can they?

As far as the ice girls go, Im with Mike (29)- they are skaters who are doing a required job, there is nothing wrong with that at all. They do promotions too and are nice people, so whats the prob? Its not like they are all just dancing around in the aisles lol.

Potvins Cups (#26) … I’m originally from Staten Island … I can tell you … SI was teaming with Islander fans … I remember a time when there was no provincial attitude about the Islanders in Staten Island … a headline in the sports section of the SI Advance in 79 before the Isles Rags series declaring in not so many words that SI was also Islander country.

If you’ve ever been to Show Place Bowling (now motor vehicles) they had a HUGE picture of Denis Potvin hoisting the Cup … not one picture of a Ranger in there …. :)
    **
Back to the ice girls… why the negative reaction to them?

Honestly … there is a rule that the home team has to provide ice clearing during TV time outs … so who would you rather see? Guys in wind breakers shoveling snow like the old days?

  32. 32 KO21

Big fan of Ice Girls, her!

Hey, I’m all for provogitivally clad, tight, sexy bodies to look at between intermissions. I especially enjoy it when they perform snow shovel duties. Nice views from the stands.

  33. 33 Photographer

I think the pictures were very good. They gave me a complete perspective of the event.

  34. 34 Potvins Cups

19 Isle in NJ 22: Great post…I did not know that about Showplace! I would also love to see a copy of that headline in the Advance!
Recently I was at a food establishment with my 3 year old while wearing an Islander cap…a man on his way out felt compelled to say the following: “Islanduzzzz???? Don’t you know this is Ranger country???” Gotta love Staten Island.

PS - My apologies to CB…did’t mean to hijack the thread but us Isles fans have to bond when we can…=)

  35. 35 jay dugan

the ice girls arent a gimmick. The league mandates that someone scoops up the ice shavings a certain amount of times each period. I appreciate that it is ICE GIRLS rather than the initial person they had doing it when the league first started mndating this.
The origonal guy looked like ADAM SANDLER from his MTV days on the show REMOTE CONTROL. stop with the negativity and just enjoy.
CB…YOU WERE RIGHT ,NO NEWS TO REPORT!!

  36. 36 River Alph

For those who want to get rid of the Ice Girls..if your in the stands and the Islanders are losing 6-0, would you rather watch Sal from Corona clear the crease or Ice Girls?
