ISLANDERS TRADE, NHL FANHOUSE DEBUT
NYI move non-prospect, we write about Kopitar

by admin on August 31st, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Here’s my Fanhouse debut, a profile of Anze Kopitar of the Kings. Asking yet another personal favor, please check it out and let AOL know you’re reading. The Islanders make their move: trading non-prospect Rob Hennigar – a brutally misguided signing in the first place – to Carolina for fringe prospect Bobby Hughes, a 5-11 center who played in the AHL and ECHL last season.

Gee, another half assed undersized center. Good work Snow.

  2. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Who is this “Christopher” person at Fanhouse? ;)

  3. avatar Erik says:

Hughes definitely has more upside then Hennigar, but is very injury prone.

  4. avatar Brian G says:

big move….everyone get ready for the cup run this year

  5. avatar Steve Sommers says:

Bobby Hughes COME GET THE STANLEY CUP!

  6. avatar jimfromstjames says:

Heard a rumer that Snow was looking to trade De Hann for two beer leagers ( maybe me ) and a hockey bag, one of the big ones, with the skate pockets on the side, all value…

    Has the season started yet???

  7. avatar Akeem says:

    Christopher????

  8. avatar Joe G. says:

Hey at least it wasnt a goalie… lol

  9. avatar jay dugan says:

what was the situation with Hennigar anyway?

  10. avatar Strummer's Army says:

YAWN, that trade is so symbolic of Snow. Can’t have enough 5’11″ players around Snow. Boring. I understand it’s bookkeeping but it’s not going to help the Isles or Tigers.

I think Snow is afraid to make a meaningful trade. When is the last time he did it? I’m not talking about trading a guy for a draft pick I’m talking about bringing a substantial player to the Isles? I think every trade Snow made for a player he got burned and is now gun shy. That’s why the defense still sucks and the Isles still do not have enough in the enforcer department. With Riechlecz on the Isles (and he still needs help) there is no heavyweight in Bridgeport. Got to have a heavyweight down there because the AHL is loaded with experienced heavys.

He’s done a good job in FA after a shakey start early in his career and hopefully he’ll do better when he starts to make trades again.

    Kopitar is a fantastic player.

  11. i’d love to see kopitar in an islanders jersey, but that is probably never gonna happen :(

  12. avatar Leviticus says:

So, it’s pretty clear that the LA rebuild is way more advanced than us….kopitar a 2005 pick, and only this year has LA dipped into the free agent market. I guess patience is a virtue (when trying to do this the right way…. And spare me the’since 1992-93′ crap).

  13. avatar Johnny Islander says:

“Brutally Misguided signing”? Care to elaborate? The guy was a Canadian college FA who played in the minors. No harm, no foul?

  14. avatar peter debenedetto says:

CB…..writing Islanders trade and Kopitar in the same title just made me giddy for about a second….DON’T DO THAT DUDE!!!
On my way over to fanhouse.

  15. avatar jonsson3 says:

is post #5 THE Steve Sommers ??? The schmoozer?

  16. avatar rb says:

I don’t know squat about Bobby Hughes. He could be a total stiff and never play a game in the NHL. But the constant harping, geez.

If there had been an internet in 1974, people would’ve been carping over Bill Torrey trading two guys, Bart Crashley and Larry Hornung, for some lousy 3rd round pick of the crappy Kansas City Scouts who was holding out. The player we got? Bob Bourne.

My point is that some of these deals are just for depth, some are busts and others are “reaches.” But you just never know.

  17. avatar doc says:

    RB: That’s awesome…

I mean really… why does anyone even have an opinion on this trade.

    DOC

  18. avatar Blizzard says:

Blockbuster!!! Really looking forward to the next lighthouse peace. And Glancing at the headline for a second I thought the Islanders traded for Anze Kopitar!!!!lol!!!!

  19. avatar Sean says:

Please Chris never write Islanders trade and start off with Kopitar, I was ready to go get his name on the back of my jersey. He was the reason I went to the isles/kings game last year.

  20. avatar Geli says:

Chris, what’s with the brutally misguided comment? That seems a bit much. If anything it was just incredibly minor news…both when he was signed, and now that he was traded. That comment just seemed a bit much, no?

  21. avatar drouin says:

    Chris[topher],
Please do not put Isles Trade in the header with a bright blue link to “A Profile of Anze Kopitar” directly underneath. I saw one then the other without reading any of the stuff in between and I started to dream.

  22. avatar Spud 31 says:

BTW Nice piece on Puck Daddy about Sillinger…

  23. avatar billy says:

another body for minors, come on snow we need another quality body for the isles!!!!!!

i am really choked about tampa getting tanguay, but then it also says a lot that no isles players apparently reached out to him to come here like marty and vinny did.

ho hum, this was a pointless trade but at least it was NEW isles info!!! hahaha

august sucks being a hockey fan!!!!

  24. avatar Tavares says:

@17….it is called freedom of speech.

  25. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Yeah CB ~ That trade is nothing to write home about … I wonder if Garth gave the privledge of pulling the trigger on that trade to a Biz major intern? Another small center? The Isles are neck deep in under sized centers … what is the motivation for that trade? Boredom?
    ***
OK … now going over to Fanhouse to read your article on Anze.

  26. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

    Great article on Kopitar CB…

I think because the Kings are way out there in the Western Conference we sometimes forget how stacked with young budding talent the Kings are. Kopi seems like the kinda kid that would fit great on the Isles … well … any team.

Hopefully the development of Bails, Tavares, Okposo and some of the other young guns can keep pace.

  27. What the Kings have done (and still are doing) is exactly what the Islanders should do. I was able to catch a few Kings games last season and they really impressed me. They have turned the idea of “starting over” or as we know very well as “rebuild” into a fun experience with much promise. I just hope the Islanders have been taking notes, and if not, maybe they can stay up late, keep an eye on the Kings, and then begin taking notes. Any homework will help this young Islander team . . . . (man I wish the Isles had Drew Doughty!)

  28. avatar 4195mary says:

Seriously, what is the issue with Hennigar? He had decent stats in junior, and very impressive stats in college. He averaged over 2 ppg. in the ECHL last year, but flopped in B-port. He’s not very big. Is he slow? Is the AHL his ceiling? Granted, Canadian college players making the NHL is rare, but Mike Ridley came from a similar situation. He had a very nice career. What is Hennigar’s story CB, I must know.

  29. avatar battfist says:

So CB…you respect Kopitar’s game…but do you respect what he said about Moulson?

  30. avatar Jim B says:

Any Islander fan with half a brain knows exactly what the New York Islander’s roster is missing. However, it seems Garth Snow’s talented team of scouts are still asking the question, “What can we do to improve?” The obvious answer is bigger players!
As I look over the Islanders roster this afternoon it seems most of the players on the team are hovering around the 5’11, 190 lbs. mark. This is a mark that is going to cost the Islanders a lot of games even if they play with the grit and character that Ted Nolan preached two short years ago. The newest acquisition of Bobby Hughes seems to go right along with this plan of David vs. Goliath for Mr. Wang’s group of underdogs.
The truth is we have had a small team for a very long time, and it is something that needs to be immediately addressed. The Buffalo Sabres were a little, speedy team that won the President’s Cup, but they didn’t win the Stanley Cup, did they? Size matters.
Brian Burke knows this to be true, just look at his work in Anaheim! Big, bulky players with some skill combined with a couple of super talents is the answer! We have Tavares, now surround him with some Bertuzzi like forwards to crash, to protect, to finish and get the job done. Jeff Tambellini is not the answer. He had too much time to prove himself last year; his roster spot better not cause Jesse Joensuu to have a seat back in Bridgeport, because he is our only man of any size.
Frans Neilsen seems like a wonderful kid but I would gladly package him up with some other tiny boys on the team and ship him out for some muscle. What else do you need to learn besides the fact that we were bottom feeders last season with a makeup of no size and no talent. Get bigger, get stronger, and win! One talent in John Taveres is not going to save us, we need to BUILD around our talent to win!

  31. avatar leviticus says:

    Moulson…a minor league/4th line player…who cares…

  32. avatar Islesfan is Vancouver says:

    @10
seriously? Snow got fleeced when he traded comrie? I disagree with you. For those who continually complain that snow hasn’t made a trade, who would you like to see moved? Okposo? Bailey? Come on now. We aren’t at the stage where trading a young player is a good move. Have a little patience. We are at least a year or two away from looking to add a name free agent or making a big deal. You all sound like milbury was a better gm. Stay the course and build like the kings are.

  33. avatar leviticus says:

#31, don’t you know…they’re lining upto trade top 6 talent for Sim and Tambellini

  34. avatar BrianS says:

The Canucks just traded for Christian Ehrhoff from the Sharks. It was basically a salary dump by the Sharks, as they received prospects in return for a 27 year old center that is 6-2 and had 8 goals and 34 assists last year. Yes, he makes a little over 3 million a season but isn’t this EXACTLY the type of deal we need to make to aid our rebuild? I mean, young, productive, reasonable cost and available strictly due to salary cap issues. Since we have so much room under the cap, shouldn’t we be targeting players just like this?

  35. avatar Chris TMC says:

Come on, its just an AHL signing. Whats with the cup comments and the anger? What in the world is there to be angry over?

  36. avatar Islesfan is Vancouver says:

I would rather we save our cap space for elite
players. Our cap space is one of our most valuable assets. Do you see ehrhoff as that much of an upgrade? Not trying to be argumentative, I just don’t see him as worth taking on lukowich as well. If we take
on other teams mistakes we only limit what we can do when the team shows it’s ready for the next step. Just my two cents

  37. avatar Islesfan is Vancouver says:

I believe ehrhoff is a defenseman. Just a footnote

  38. avatar steve says:

    Ehroff..
scored 42 points on the best regular season team in the league. is making 3 million, and thats what you want to buy? is he physical..no. is he going to bloster our scoring up front, no…
a move to make a move? i dont think we are gonna sign..kessel from the bruins. but boston has a salary cap problem, lets see exactly how that situation is handled. maybe get an idea where the market is for a young player with some talent, on a team up against the cap that desperately needs relief.
just making a point here, not saying-thinking or expecting kessel will be signed. curious how it settles out.

  39. avatar TM says:

No Anthony you’re dead wrong. A trade at this point would make us less embarrassing and less of a joke and protect/help Tavares. There’s a big difference between being a Cup contender or a playoff team and the irrelevant laughingstock they are now. Most would settle for in between at this point.

  40. avatar battfist says:

Congrats CB on the new gig…nice piece on Kopitar.
I know you like his play…but I wonder if you believe Kopitar when he says Moulson is a good player on the ice….lol.

  41. I think they should throw their hat in the ring for Kessel. He is just starting to hit his stride in the NHL and with his world class shooting ability he could potentially score 50 goals in the NHL. Having a player of that ability would also take some pressure off Tavares.
