NEWSDAY’S KATIE STRANG ON THE ISLANDERS BEAT
Plus: Why Greg Logan should still be around the NYI

You can add another talented young professional to Islanders Country. Katie Strang has been named the new Islanders beat writer for Newsday.
Katie is a 20-something, Tavares-level prospect who has been a reporter at Long Island’s newspaper the last two years after graduating from Michigan State. She knows the game of hockey well and has already established strong contacts and a good working relationship with the Islanders.
Actually, she’s more than a prospect. She’s a thorough and relentless reporter. There’s no question in my mind that Katie will do an outstanding job on this beat and Islanders fans are going to like her coverage. While every writer is limited by the space they are given in the print edition of the paper, Katie will blog religiously. Count on it.
If Newsday‘s goal is to provide readers with the best coverage of the Islanders anywhere, then the paper’s editors should make Greg Logan the Doug Weight to Strang’s Tavares.
Greg took a tremendous amount of pride in his work on the Islanders and had countless exclusive stories to show for it on his four years on the beat. His cell phone has the numbers of every crucial contact in and around the organization and he enjoyed a professional working relationship with general manager Garth Snow. Greg loved being on the Islanders beat, and so many of us blogger types learned a lot from being around him. Logan must stay.
With Newsday increasing its hockey coverage in the Cablevision era – and likely to step it up on the Island as Tavares starts to play some games – the inclusion of an experienced, insightful journalist like Logan is essential. I’m sure there are plenty of things Logie would like to cover, now that he is off the grind of an NHL beat. But it would be a disappointment for me and a loss for hockey fans if Greg Logan is not around the Islanders in the big spots.
Comments on this story and Islanders coverage here. Hockey talk continues in the next thread.

Plus: Why Greg Logan should still be around the NYI

Maybe I missed it but is there an official reason that Logan left the beat? I always thought he did a very good job, second only to this blog. Best of luck to Katie in any case!
-
Katie – Welcome to the hockey world – London Ontario is reading you and watching JT with great interest.
-
Isn’t she the one that butchered a couple of articles about the lighthouse? Or was that someone else?
Either way, she gets a fair shot. So, good luck to her.
-
cb.. i usually agree with most of your assessments, but wow im sure im in the minority, but greg logan in my humble opinion is a horrible reporter. he comes across like a ranger fan, while covering the ISLANDERS, and how obvious is his disdain for DP, very unprofessional, there is a long list of his personal feelings in his reporting and lack of reporting. can’t speak for anyone other then myself but im going to crack open the $200 bottle of special patron i have been saving. cb, i’ll pour a shot you for.
-
sincity I agree with you. I myself am NOT a fan of Greg Logan and I’m glad he’s off the beat. I have emailed him a couple times to ask him a question about the Islanders and the response I got was not only unprofessional but it was mean, nasty and downright rude. See ya Logan, don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
-
sincity, it sounds like you already had a few… I’ll pour a shot you for?
Katie’s done a good job in the last year, so I’ll give her a shot. As for Logie, I hope he’s around the team, although I suppose I’ll just have to wait, like with my favorite Islanders blog…
-
Out with the old, in with the new. Katie Strang is a breath of fresh air to this beat. She’s hungry, upbeat and actually cares about the beat. With the influx of young talent the likes of Tavares, Bailey, Okposo and Dehaan, in comes a 20-something with the wherewithal to provide us Islander fans what we need – passion, drive and legitimate scoop. Congrats KS
-
I can’t help but wonder if logan lost his beat after his embarrassing showing at the nhl draft. I for one found it very difficult to believe anything logan said post-duchene. I’m excited for some new blood!
-
No disrespect to Katie but I loved Logan. He was insightful, kept steady and often excellent coverage of the team and replied to every single e-mail I ever sent him.
Newsday’s choice to take a serious vet reporter off the Isles beat (against his will) is beyond strange. Isles increasing star power with all these top young players and having a top 3 goalie rotation to drool for and you replace your serious vet with a cub reporter (no offense Katie)? Isles now have the biggest hockey star in the tri-state area in Tavares and your going to decrease Isles coverage and reassign Logan to what Lacrosse or HS girls soccer?
I believe this is a way of dimming the Isles progress with all the young stars compared to the Rangers overpaid and underproductive Drury and Redden. Newsday and the Rangers are part of the same family and we’ve all seen the Ranger coverage quadruple since they bought the paper.
Between Logan and Botta the Isles have enjoyed the best coverage of the team we’ve ever had. Isles own website sucks. Now Logan is gone and Botta might be gone it just blows and none of it makes any sense.
#5 Logan is no ranger fan and is a huge Dipietro fan.
-
I wish the best to Katie. Haven’t been a fan of Newsday for a while but maybe that will change now.
-
I’ll trade you a Logan, Strang and a reporter to be named later for Alan Hahn.
-
did Greg Logan get the news about this or is he on another vacation? Katie Strang = new blood.
-
While Logan lost some credibility with his insistence that the Islanders were going to take Duchene–it seemed almost like he did it only for the “toldja so” moment–he was still a damn good beat writer. Good luck, Katie. Having to watch this team every day is tough enough, but having to spin the painful losses after painful losses, well, that can’t be fun at all.
-
Bit of a disappointment. Logan’s always been a good read, even if it seemed like he’s been a different guy since Ted Nolan left the organization. There was a real note of sourness in his reporting this season. Perhaps unavoidable when you’re covering a last-place team, but it seemed to extend into a greater mistrust of Snow and Wang than I think he ever let on.
Definitely hope he gets kept around in some fashion. Those times when he “let his hair down” on the blog were some of his best articles. Always thorough on the blog, even when his editors massacred the print pieces.
-
I liked Logan’s reporting and articles. I loved his blog chats, I thought he did a great job. Hopefully like you said, he will remain at least a small part of the Islanders in the paper.
-
I’ll admit I’m not a fan of Logan’s reporting. Watching a game and then reading Logan’s take on it the next day in the paper were two totally different experiences. He would often be way off on the facts sometimes and not have a good grasp of the tone of the game or action in general. I’ve also emailed him a few times and politely asked him to explain how he could get the facts wrong… only to never receive a response.
I wish him well and I hope he is still providing coverage for the paper.
-
there’s a crack in the glass ceiling.
-
Younger Reporter with Less Experience = Lower Salary. Apparently, the Islanders aren’t the only Long Island business cutting back.
-
I never minded Logan’s reporting, although I thought Alan Hahn did a great job. Nothing against him personally, but I just hope that Katie is a better writer than John Valenti.
-
(4): No MJS- the one with the LH errors in her articles was Eden Laiken.
Katie has improved by leaps and bounds over the last year or so. I was initially critical of her when she first started, her writing paled in comparison to Logan, but I now enjoy her work a lot. She has obviously been interested in improving her craft and has a genuine enthusiasm that comes through in her writing. She is also knowledgable about the sport and the team, which is of course mandatory.
That being said- while I am happy for her and thankful that the Isles still have a competent writer at Newsday, I am devastated about this news regarding Logan. This is a big loss for Islanders country, and I am really disappointed over it. Logan always takes the time to reply to my emails when I have questions and has gone out of his way many times and helped me with the ongoing stalker issue I had over at the Newsday site. Those little things can endear a writer, but it was his overall competence and pleasant, objective, informative writing style that I am going to miss the most.
So much gained and so much lost this summer, it has truly been a season of contradiction for Isles fans.
-
14 Devon (14): Insistence? Please look back at the GL article from before the draft once again- because you are not remembering its tone correctly. Logan repeatedly said things about how he didnt know, was only guessing, wasnt certain, it wasnt based on inside info or a sure thing, etc. That is not insistence by any definition, it was his guess- and, as he pointed out then, thats all it was.
-
Jesus Christ.. Katie Strang and Logan? How about none of the above and they make you the beat reporter. Your the only one who has a following in Islander Country and your the ONLY reporter in Islander Country who understands
1) How to fact check
2) Spell
3) Write a complete sentence without pissing off the massesHow about we just do away with Newsday’s coverage of hockey all together and just keep point blank?
There’d still be more coverage of the Islanders AND We’d all have you stay. I can’t stand Scrubsday.
-
I can only speak from my own experience, but I think Logan was a class act. If you sent him an email, he almost always replied, and in a courteous manner. IMO, his live chats were conducted the same way.
Good luck to Ms. Strang!
-
Plus – she has CB’s endorsement
Minus – she went to Michigan State (proud Michigan alum here)
-
Anything is better then Logan I guess.
-
I like Strang, but don’t fall in love too quick. How much does she really LOVE being part of the Isles, or is this a stepping stone. If the Isles lose Logan (llikely) then what does that say? I think it says what the team is concerned with losing.
-
cb
i love what you stand for and how good you are with isles coverage but i am now stepping away,,,,,,,are you kidding me?
this is bs… you n ot being backed by the isles and etc and now strange is isles coverage…
dont kid yourself
seriously ima diehard fan and can see a bs card when pulled
cb
doug is now calling you out
softballnyc1@yahoo.comif you wanna be this person great, give me a chance for a few question so i ( and many fans can relax) take a breath
-
I’m in disbelief when I read some of these comments. Unless it just so happens that everytime I got sick of Newsday’s terribly boring articles and stopped reading for a while, Logan came through with strong coverage. I find it hard to say he touched decent.
Just goes to show how much people differ. I, personally liked Alan Hahn a lot, too bad I don’t follow the Knicks.
I hope Katie brings some much needed life to this beat coverage. Till then I ride with point blank…even though it seemed like I wouldn’t be able to. I’m glad I still see updates, and hope they continue.
-
I am sure Kate S will do fine
Logan was ok, not great, but not terrible@19 I believe your off a little
It sounds like CB knows that Logan will still be a writer at Newsday….so her getting promoted will only cost more because now she is the beat reporter and I am sure that Logan will probably keep his salary. As much as i would like to take a swipe at Cablevision/Newsday for cutting back, it really doesnt look so.
-
Ok CB-
Comparisons to Tavares and Weight…lol…yeah in age!Logan-he lost me after his draft predictions.
Katie-who knows….You arent selling me on these two.
-
At least the Islanders have coverage. I hope Logan is part of it as well, he did a nice job.
-
Newsday’s hockey coverage is a sorry joke, it’s completely irrelevant. I agree with post 21. Sorry CB, Logan sounds like a friend of yours.
-
The Islander Fan base needs to take a step back and be a little more open minded about this change. Alan Hahn was the right guy from the start but unfortunately we are not getting back. the mere fact that he was replaced by Logan was a slap in the face. Logan was never around, sure he would blog once and a while and have an open chat but they were horrible. His chats never worked there were always tech problems and his sources were just as horrible as his insight on the team. Having Katie will provide us with an upgrade, we are getting someone that will be attentive to detail and keep us constantly updated. Hopefully she will be with us for a long time. Best of luck to you Katie.
CB, you take on Logan is way off when it comes to sports journalism. Sorry.
-
You would think that she’d have posted something on the islanders beat already. Still stuck at Blake Comeau Runs a Risk…July 24 2009. Does she have a different blog site or something or is CB that far ahead of her?
-
i think whoever up there said logan was ‘a damn good beat writer’ is right on.
he did a solid, steady job. the blog thing is a separate deal. it should be anyway. greg is a good old-fashioned sports writer/reporter, and these days, that is saying a lot. whatever’s next for him, i wish him luck.
i like katie. she’ll bring new engery, like hopefully the team does. -
Frankly Katie did a way better job than Logan IMO when he was on one of his many vacations so Ill take Katie any time. Never liked Logan, was always looking to stir things up. Plus compared to the Ranger guy Logan barely posted.
-
CB you are the best Isles coverage. I like Logan but he is a reporter. If newsday makes decesion there is not much you can do.
Pointblank on other hand is a MUST.
-
There is only one thing that we (including the old Newsday crew) can say…
SHOTS!!!
Now where is MAB?
-
Wasnt a big fan of Logan, though not a hater. Have seen Katie blog alot on the Isles, so hopefully she will have insight on the team. Perhaps she will grow as a reported as the team grows, and then will be able to write a few books on the New Isles Dynasty.
Question to CB, I was a huge fan of Alan Hahn, especially his reader’s mailbag. What was your take on him as a reported from your previous job? Why did he leave the Isles beat?
-
Keep Point Blank going – this is now the only real Islander coverage…Logan wasn’t the best but I still think he did a good job, everyone forgets the team didn’t really give him any info (rumors) for any stories. Now Strang will have a tougher time getting info since she is a rookie. Everyone is going the cheap route with anything related to this team…another joke for this Team
-
CB: Did you ever think that “you” might be the reason for the change? Perhaps Newsday took notice of the reported 400,000 unique monthly hits to your blog and decided that a beat reporter who embraces the power of blogging may be just what they needed to ramp up the papers unique monthly hits to their site. I have nothing against Logan but he did not manage the blog very well. That may not be his fault but at the end of the day it’s a business and Newsday wants to be #1 so a change might have been in order. I welcome a new fresh perspective and I have enjoyed Katies other coverage thus far. I wish her all the success in the world. CB: your still #1 even though we may have to make you #1A until you decide what your doing.
-
Quite frankly my vote would be to bring Alan Hahn back as well.
-
What difference does it make really? In the era of live updates, blogs, and tweets you have to believe that Newsday will continue down the path to irrelevancy.
-
As much as Isles fans think the sun rises and sets on their team, the Isles beat at Newsday is down near the bottom of the barrel. Alan Hahn was (reluctantly) “promoted” to the Knicks beat; not sure what the powers that be have in mind for Greg.
For Katie Strang, it’s a chance to prove herself on a beat — by doing a great job with the Isles, she can move up on the pecking order. In reading her stuff, she shows some talent; hopefully for Isles fans, she’ll embrace the opportunity.
As for this blog: If the Islanders Business Club had any brains, they’d all pitch in to fund it/advertise on it. After all, where better to reach Islanders fans than on this blog?
-
The Conspiracy Theorist in me smells something rotten:
Theory-1 would be that The Islanders and Newsday are working together to make Katie’s blog essentially the new IPB. Push you (CB) aside by not backing you, and push Logan aside with reassignment. Add a fresh young blogger to essentially “steal your special sauce” and attract all your readers/blogger types to benefit Newsday/Cablevision/Dolan sell more papers and add more readers. Benefit to the Islanders is not having to financially back the #1 isles blogger, yet still have it out there, and they may figure Newsday’s blog being tied to an actual publication has a wider reach than IPB.
Theory-2 is simpler, yet worse one. That everything in Islanders Country is getting cut. Any voice that champions the Islanders Product, is being silenced IPB/CB, Logan, the Radio Show/Radio Announcers, also Islanders Illustrated- ALL GONE. How can that be a good thing to dump ALL AT ONCE? It’s almost like they are trying to disconnect the fans from the team, by cutting all their main media outlets- Could this be setting us for something bad to come- I’d hate to even speculate- But a team that is rumored to be moving, after years of dispute with the county over a new arena CANT BE A GOOD THING (even if we all seemingly now believe this lighthouse thing has taken a turn for the positive- could it just be a “false positive”?)
Yikes…..
Hate when my mind races…….
-
Hockey fans it looks we have another winner on Long Island.Good Luck and who knows she might write like Hellen Elliot who ended up in the Hall of Fame or Robin Herman who wrote Hockey for the Times during the Glory Days. As I always say, “Lets March to the Cup” Of Course keep the faith in the team.
-
I like Greg Logan, having met him a few times and hope he’s still part of Newsday. I also met Katie Strang when she was working the crowd at a game trying to get comments on who the Isles should draft. She’s very good as a writer and interviewer. As an extra added bonus, she happens to be a very beautiful young lady. That said, #27 and #28, you’re both way out of line. That kind of attitude is why there has been a glass ceiling for women (not to mention a lack of women in sportswriting until relatively recently) in the business world. She knows the sport she covers and writes well. That would be true no matter what she looks like. I think she’ll do a great job as the Islanders beat writer and I hope to see her at the Coliseum often next season.
-
What I’ll remember most about Logan is when CB got a scoop one time, rather than Logan stepping up his game — Logan whined about the team sponsored thing. Speaking for myself, I lost alot of respect for him after that.
But the bottom line is Newsday’s Islanders coverage was destroyed by a first year blog.
If you were running Newsday and expected results, is that a result you would accept?
-
great..add this to the joke we have become…just heard the daily news just hired a 20ish y.o. to be the beat writer for the yankees, oh wait no they didnt they have to much respect for there fans.
-
All great points. I just can’t help questioning that there is not someone out there that has some hockey knowledge and experience that could fill this job better that a recent college grad??? We are not talking about a fishing or girls soccer column. During the season, there should be a daily article about the Isles. I hope she is up to the task. Is she ready to rip DP knowing she may see him at Champions after????
-
I dunno, I smell a rat. No disrespect to Katie, but I think this is wrong. Logan was very very good – his real only glaring error was the draft story about Duschene, but other than that he was spot on. However IF I had a choice, I’d rather have Alan Hahn hands down – he was the best. Would always talk to you at games, cordial, professional and passionate about the Islanders. I’ll keep an open mind, but this is a downer for me.
-
I agree with DonK (45). Good point about the Islanders Business Club. CB, have you reached out to the IBC yet? Just curious, as that may be another avenue worth looking into.
This is the #1 place for Isles fans, and if we can get 600,000 monthly unique visitors we can use that to our advantage in this poor economy. IBC members may be happy to support this blog as it will complete the connection between the NYI, long-island businesses and Islander fans throughout the country.
Anyone else agree with me?
-
funny how about our different reactions to the various beat reporters. some here really like hahn as opposed to logan. i was not a big fan of hahn. i always felt like he was going through the motions, not really enaged in the beat. i suppose it could have a mistaken impression.
-
Did anyone ever read Logan’s Islanders Insider pieces? Amazingly in-depth, I thought. That was the only Isles coverage that even came close to rivaling PB, imo. I’d have liked to have seen more blogs from Logan, and greater control of the comments section, but I disagree strongly that he had an axe to grind with the Isles, and especially with DP. I remember him writing a blog about DP being a top 5 goalie after the goalie had taken some criticism in the comment section earlier that day. Logan was rightfully critical of the organization for its bungling of DP early last season.
Best of luck, Logan, and welcome to the beat, Katie Strang.
-
first off no disrespect to any former, current or future isles writers, but there has not been a better writer for the isles since alan hahn, i am still realing from his move to the knicks…theres not a day that goes by where i dont hope to open up a newsday and find an isles article written by him…
now im depressed! -
why would hahn leave the knicks to come back to the isles. I mean as a beat writer I would think you would want to cover the teams most fans care about and face we are fanatics but there are not that many of us in the NY area. The Isles crest gets much more respect on my periodic trips to Canada then it does here in the local area. Good Luck Katie. Good Luck Logan
-
Good luck to her, but they should of hired you.
-
Hey she is already getting recognition on other blogs so maybe she alreay has her first scoop.
-
I don’t mind a switch–like him or hate him, Logan was not a legendary voice–and we don’t really know the reasons so I’d rather not jump down Newsday’s throat and condemn them for what may be logistical or personal reasons on somebody’s part. The relationship between Strang and Isles players and brass will build up with time. I was disturbed that Rangers writers were covering Isles events, so maybe that will end.
BTW, did anyone catch on Strang’s new blog that Jon Sim held a charity auction this week? I wonder if the charity centered on him getting back to the NHL for good… Does every NHLer have their own charity? (I’m for it, but it seems surprising.)
-
Logan was great. His columns were excellent and he was always responsive to Isles fans. His online chats, blog, and Friday newsletter were great supplements to his coverage and allowed him to address issues that would not otherwise be discussed in the newspaper. He even responded to email questions from readers. I wish him well and hope we will continue to hear from him on Isles issues. Good luck to Katie too.
-
7th woman (18), I’m not sure of the glass ceiling you’re referring to – but I think Helene Elliott pushed through that barrier some time ago…
-
good luck katie. look forward to your continued good work. have fun in saskatoon
-
Katy Strang = excellent. Ever since the 2008 draft live blog from the Coliseum, I’ve had a great deal of respect for her coverage.
-
Many years ago I had the privilege of attending a short course in journalism at Michigan State. If the U. of missouri and Columbia U are the Harvard and Yale of Journalism programs, Michigan state maybe Princeton. What I’m really saying is that Kate had to be tops to get into and graduate with a degree from that school- she has the brains, and pedigree to be a great reporter Now of course is her chance to use these credials.
-
I hope Katie does a lot of live blogging, because her work is very good, and she needs to reach out to the fans the way Logan did. Wish her all the best.
-
I’m sure Katie will do a fine job because she has something to prove. People that are challenged beyond their daily requirements, which in this case is very likely, usually rise to the occasion or fail miserably. I’m sure Katie will go that extra mile.
I liked Logan’s coverage. It was more than adequate. But I do agree the beat sort of lost something when Alan Hahn defected to the Knicks. His book on the Islanders dynasty is a great read and I highly suggest you get it if you haven’t already.
Good luck Katie.
-
Congrats to Katie Strang! Looking forward to her coverage. Must disagree with you CB, in that I think Isles coverage lost quite a bit when Alan Hahn left. Hopefully Katie will bring it back. Logan lost my readership to his blog when he took the opportunity last season to blast the airline he flew from Denver to Calgary or Edmonton during the Isles’ west coast swing. How dare an airline cancel Prince Logan’s flight! Like that has never happened to any of us before. And to then whine and trash the airline on your hockey blog? What a baby.
-
I would like to know how Greg Logan himself feels about this. I hope he makes a statement soon. If this is what he himself wanted, then I will be a lot happier about it.
-
#65, she got her masters at Columbia as well… Congrats, Katie, and g’luck.
-
I would have preferred Hahn back. Hopefully she does a fine job though.
-
Katie or Newsday must change the color/font of her blog!! Jeez was that painful on the eyes to read.
-
bri on li #7 “i’ll pour a shot you for” it’s called sarcasm, as in already feeling good, in celebration of the elimination of a a RANGER FAN covering the ISLANDERS,
-
Logan was an alright beat reporter, but his article’s were way too vanilla until he had something bad to say about the Isles Org. Also what was the deal with writing shorthand instead of a tape recorder during press conferences? Anyway’s…Welcome to Katie. In her limited role, she has brought new flavors to the stories of all things Islanders. Hope to read some fresh reports and viewpoints this season as the beatwriter.
Not sure whats up with the new site either, it looks like an 8 year old designed it. Blue background, white font…doesnt exactly look like a website you go to read articles. -
AS LONG AS SOMEONE IS PROVIDING INFORMATION AND KEEPING US FANS UP TO SPEED WITH THE TEAM – I DON”T CARE WHO IT IS…
-
Best of luck, Katie. It’ll be a job and a half to try to please THIS crowd
-
If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? If a Newsday reporter writes something on a website that no one can navigate and will soon be a pay site, does it matter?
-
TuxTax – I agree on the site layout…my eyes can’t take the lack of a white background for very long – I have to look away from the screen to sort of reset them.
Regarding Logan using shorthand, I had a digital recorder that I swore by for interviews until it inexplicably stopped working one day, taking with it an interview I needed for that day and multiple interviews I needed for the next week. I’m a big fan of written notes now! Recorders are OK for a backup to written notes, but I find they actually add time to your work if you use one without notes, as you have to go back, listen to everything again, transcribe, etc. Just my experiences anyway.
-
Thanks for the insight UIF, I guess as an IT professional I am always looking for better technology. Also it just seemed strange to me that he didn’t use both at least to pose better questions during interviews. But what do I know I’m no reporter…haha. All i know is that I’m getting antsy for the season.
-
WOW!!! I wonder if Loggie is going to find this out by reading about it while on vacation?
I liked Greg’s coverage … is blogging was sorta an after thought … but I feel that Greg was always more thorough then timely. An old school hit the pavement kinda journalist.
I doubt very much Newsday is going to keep Logie on the payroll if there is no other beat for him to cover… unless that is he gets promoted to Sports Editor.
I always have liked Katie’s blogging and reporting in Logan’s abscence. Her LIVE blogging was always top notch. I congratulate her on the opportunity. She’s got a long way to go in order to get the contacts, and gain their confidence that a veteran sports reporter has. There may be some gaps in information, but I know at least we should be in good hands with a quality journalist.
Good Luck Loggie!!!
and to you also Katie!!
-
Hopefully, Logan doesn’t follow Johnette Howard and Shaun Powell into the sunset. Of course Newsday is cutting back. All newspapers are. Letting Shaun Powell go was a crime, however. Very good writer–I hope he is doing well.
-
Sincity, now we need to find a hockey play-by-play guy who isn’t himself a ranger fan!
-
75 is dead on!
This girls education does not mean shitz to me. Does she know hockey? Can she talk hockey? Does she know the history of this team? How long has she lived in the NYC area?
Personally I like my coverage by those who the know team in-and-out….where we’ve been….the frustrations…someone who lives and dies hockey. Nothing personal to Ms. Katie….but I’d rather have kept Logan. To add-in todays world of cyberspace-there are many fans out there that add useful comments/ideas to message boards. Ive read some great stuff on PointBlank….How hard is it to be a beat writer…just read the message boards for ideas. But as Iron Islander said-just as long as someone is covering…Im happy.
-
All I know is that even though Logan has been replaced we’re still going to see the same old garbage line “Cablevision, the owner of the Rangers which also owns Newsday” B.S. in every waking article.
BTW, why’d they chase away Alan Hahn??
-
i really liked logan, katie has big shoes to fill reguardless what people think of him GOOD LUCK LOGIE
-
Really doesn’t matter to me since the newsday site doesn’t work properly on my screen and I end up with a big bar of white on the left hand side that never goes away. Maybe its cause I use firefox, but is anyone else having problems with the newsday site?
-
This is obviously a cost cutting measure by Newsday. But I’m willing to give her a chance. To me Logan lost all credibility last summer when he allowed Yashin’s agent to use him to report the story that the Islanders were negotiating for his return. And he certainly didn’t get any back with the whole Duchene thing. Both incidents seemed calculated to make the Islanders look bad.
-
At least she’s better looking than Greg. On a serious note, I think Logan is from a different generation and had a hard time keeping up with the demands of the 21st Century information-starved minds. Greg was fine, but when you have a site like PB, you realize how lacking his coverage was. Hopefully, Katie will provide more in depth coverage, but in my opinion (and most PB readers), CB would have been much better suited for the job.
-
I hate August.
-
She is a lot cuter than Greg.
I think Greg had a credibility gap after you left the organizition. I don’t think Greg really worked for the breaks.
Best of luck to Kate in Saskatoon, Terrace, Edmonton, and Calgary!
-
#82, bri on li
thats hilarious, thanks for the laugh. Seriously wishes the isles would add Potvin to the braodcast team. Hey remember when Maloney was GM -
Logan will be fine. (just not covering the Islanders…at all).
He’s an old school journalist.
The world still needs old school journalists.
-
I am looking forward to seeing Katie’s daily angle of the Islanders. I usually enjoyed her articles on the Islanders the past couple years when she would fill in for Logan.
-
I think CB should be the Isles on the Beat writer.
-
Wow, post #46, 22isles22, good stuff. Geez, now you got me going, and it makes sense! Mears/King, IPB, Logan, and this comes AFTER you sign JT!!!??? Think I’ll open up a beer and go watch the ’84 Cup winner against the Oilers, our LAST Cup, ever???? F!CK….

Trust me when I tell you about the Logan thing, I have a friend who works on the sports copy desk at Newsday for a long time and Logan did not want off the beat.
Logan will NOT be writing about the Islanders anymore, and the feeling on the Newsday sports desk amongst the editors is that this is a complete joke.
Logan is one of the few beat guys at the paper who can write a game story in a professional manner, I am told. He is NOT a copy editor’s nightmare, the way Zipay is, I am told.
Typical Newsday manuever. While Katie is a nice kid, she is exactly that, a kid. She does not have the experience to assume the duties of a beat job in New York, and Newsday’s sports editors should be held accountable and should be forced to answer why they made this switch….
Sadly, the night desk’s job has just become increasingly harder, and more of a strain than it already is with such a skeletal crew in there, I am told.
Also, I am told, there seems to be some very underlying, and low-handed things that took place in the past at Newsday, that allowed a mid 20s person from Michigan to get this job over a guy who had all the experience in the world, and did a first-rate job, as CB said right here on his own blog.
This is yet another sad day for sports journalism, when they can just pull a seasoned vet off a beat, and replace them with someone who they “like” a lot more.
Open yur eyes, folks, You’ve been duped again……
More to come

“Dear Friend works at Newsday….”
I think you should forget the “more to come” angle.
You’ve said enough. You’re posting rumors that could effect a guy’s livelihood here.
If you have any respect for Greg Logan (and I think you do) you will file your “more to come” under “save it for another day”.
Just mu opinion….from two time zones away.

Call me a cynic, but I don’t trust Newsday to keep Logan on, nor replace him with another beat heavy weight. I think the Isles may be going young even in their own hometown paper…. I hope I’m wrong.
