PARDON THE INTERRUPTION: Domain issue fixed;
Tanguay to Tampa Bay; Islanders stand pat
Did anyone buy one of those Hawaiian vacations? A little domain issue blacked out PB for 12 hours on Saturday. We should be okay now. In other news, Alex Tanguay finally gets a contract…with Tampa Bay. Unless the Islanders decide to capitalize on their space with a trade that alleviates another team’s cap problems, as we have forecasted for a while the offseason roster moves are over. To summarize: John Tavares and a pair of solid goalies.

I thought point blank was over. very happy to come back and see the regular site again
-
great … big shocker … use 4 fingers next time
-
You have to admit the timing was pretty crazy,m CB… I mean, RIGHT after you announced the AOL thing? Fortunately, I have your Twitter feed as one of the feeds in my Blogger.com dashboard (I dont actually have Twitter) so I was relieved once I saw your comments there.
-
I did not want Tanquay.
If this is the Islanders roster going to camp then Snow hasn’t done his job. He had a solid summer but not near good enough. He still needs 2-3 new d-men in a different mold then what exists and that would improve the d-play and the thoughness. With that he may not need to add anothe enforcer but landing another top enforcer wouldn’t be out of the question.
Not good enough and I have a feeling the Gordon & Snow excuse machine will be working harder then the ice machine at NVMC.
-
wtf i thought i won a PB contest for a trip to Hawaii.
-
I saw Hawaii and though Chris Dey has to be behind this. Thank god i was wrong!!!
-
Man on man! LOL! Yeah, I checked-in last night and was like…WTH?!? Thought it was *The End* too! Really spoke volumes as to my level of addiction to this site…
All good!
I guess I may be in the minority as to not really wanting Tanguay anyway.
Go Isles! -
I thought PB was over, but the girl was cute!
-
What a nightmare! I thought they shut down PB for good! I was in complete panic mode! Thanks for keeping this going CB. We can’t handle life without PB! And a big congrats on your gig with Fanhouse. I’ll definitely become a regular reader!
-
“as we have forecasted for a while the offseason roster moves are over. To summarize: John Tavares and a pair of solid goalies.”
Poor JT, he better have his head up because he really has no protection out there. What are you doing, Garth?
-
Same here, I thought PB was no longer. Hope it stays going for a very long time.
-
Tavares and couple of goalies with a team that’s staying together is good enough for me, especially in today’s NHL. At least no one on this team is bigger than anyone else. Everyone give it a rest on the Tavares protection. I’m sure he can take a clean body check. If it its cheap and dirty its up to Isles management to point this out to the league for punishment. I have a feeling the team this year will be more feisty and will stand up for each other.
-
Maxim Afinagenov!
-
I think Tim Jackman should get some time on the Weight/Tavares line (If that is the line) every now and again. Aaron Asham used to play on the top line from time to time and I think Jackman is a decent enough skater to play with those two. He had played well last year I’d give him a little extra ice time between the 1st and 4th lines. Wouldn’t be the first time a scenario like this happened. Especially in games against the Rangers and the Flyers he would be some protection for JT even if he lost most of those fights…lol…..he fought 19 times last year….8th in the NHL in that catagory. I just thought it was something to ponder and have my fellow PBers attack me over…..just saying.
-
A successful season will be JT still alive after 82 games, the Lighthouse Project approved and another last place finish so we can draft Taylor Hall.
-
JT won’t get mugged. Witt, among others, won’t let that happen. It would be nice to have a real goal scorer by his side though. KO might be the guy. Let the young guys sink or swim on their own. They need lots of playing time. When these guys are ready for prime time hopefully the coliseum will be too. Tanguay and Afinaganov will be mid-thirties at that point. No playoffs this season, but hopefully steady development (and good health!) Keep building Garth.
-
CB … Looks like I missed the exceitement yesterday … I was out all day so I avoided the heart stopping panic experienced by others.
**
One thing that frustrates me is that Snow (a fiesty player himself) fails to see how important it is to have a solid enforcer that can play minutes. Some people have no idea how important the “Intimidation” factor is in hockey. Clean checks aside … I’m not worried about those … it’s the gray area and flagrant head hunting that bothers me. Snow can do nothing about that by complaining to Campbell who has a one sided negative history against the Isles. -
The current Islander Ownership will never spend one more dime on the team then is required because it cares nothing for the team only for the real estate development and approvals it desires. An example of justice would be for them not to obtain the approvals they seek and also don’t deserve.
-
JT and 2 solid goalies is great, but where is our enforcer? These kids need some muscle and protection. The Wrecker isn’t scaring too many teams although I think he has great potential as an enforcer. What is Garth waiting for?
-
Welcome back CB, how was Hawaii? JT and the 2 goalies are great moves, especially since DP will likely live up to his initials for the 1st half of the year (DP=Doesn’t Play) but they HAVE to get an enforcer. any chance of dealing Tambellini and Sim to the Habs for Laroque? (hey, a man can dream can’t he?)
-
I should not be the one complaining because I am not a season ticket holder but If I were I would take some time to think about renewing my tickets if the product on the ice does not get better within the next couple of years. Unless you have thousands of dollars you can just throw away.
-
the best trade we can make is getting a new stadium….
-
We all understand that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Even with two rookie prodigies, the Pengs have a lot to be proud of in a few short years. That being said, and totally understanding what the pain of a rebuild requires, if the team isn’t going to pick up free agent talent at forward, don’t they at least owe us some free agent toughness? I get it, they don’t want to be a first round and out team anymore, but are they just resigned to field a less then mediocre team? 18 goal leading KO, and others, will continue to get better, but…We all pay a huge amount of money for season tix, or even just to go to a few games, and I am getting fed up with the penny pinching.
-
I Dont Know About This One….Something Tells Me Garth Could Be Up To Something. Maybe It’s Just Taking Some Time And Us Islander Fans Want Something Now. Who Knows What He’s Thinking. After All, How Many Of Us Saw Marty Biron Coming Here. And How Many Of Us Liked It? Alot Right! So Let’s See, I Could See 1 or 2 More Players Coming To The Island. Maybe Just Players We Didn’t Have In Mind, But Could Be Sleeper Picks… Still Got Alil Over A Month Before The Season Starts…Let’s Wait And See.
-
I still would not rule out the Isles making a trade. I would be surprised if the Isles were done. I can understand the Isles not making a big splash in free agency. 99.9% of the players would not sign with the Isles anyway. There should be room in the budget to make a trade.
-
OH well I was going to book through PB travel but now I’ll use orbitz instead
-
i really thought that was the bitter end of pb. false alarm…
-
@#13…yea God forbid that we should have a stand player, a star. That would be just awful.
-
Thank God PB is still here because Katie Strang writes nothing! You also can’t find any Isles stories on their website, so this is the only place for Isles coverage.
-
i swear some people on this site are just off their rockers…
1. NEED A NEW BUILDING BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE
2. no top flight players are signing here until point number 1 is in the works
3. who is worth over paying for this year…hossa??? tanguay??? or past years.. gomez?? briere?? campbell?? how are those guys working out.the only way this will work is to develop a core from within…will this team make the playoffs; no…will they be entertaining to watch..no doubt…everybody calm down
-
Rechlicz is only 22. He got a taste of the NHL last year and he held his own IMO, quite well. The battle with Cote of Philly was a pretty respectable dance with a tough guy. I think he can grow into the enforcer job for us. I wouldn’t say we are totally unprotected.
-
Rechlicz plays with heart, a true team guy Mr. Islander. They also have some punch at Bridgeport they can bring inn…
-
Tavares #1…Just curious, what “star” player did you want the isles to sign? Do you not get how many teams are over the cap, and how many more will be over it next year? Could it be, just maybe, that during this season and/or next year is a better time to look for that player you want so much? And, maybe, the “star”player is better coming from within? Geez
-
Let’s see Tampa bay already had a $51 mil cap hit before they added Tanguay.
Isles cap is at $40mil
can you say let’s make a deal
-
Someone mentioned that Garth didn’t do a great job this summer. I don’t think Garth did ANY job this summer. I realize the team is rebuilding, but shouldn’t there at least be some appearance of an attempt to compete? It seems pretty clear that the isles are following the penguin model and going for a top 2 pick again this season. I am not sure how anyone gives Garth Snow credit for this.
There will be some early season buzz for tavares, but, once that fades, old building, awful team…like I said, it is a rebuild, so, if it ends up that way, so be it. I just think a team owes it to it’s fans to try and improve the worst team in the league. This was a team that couldn’t score a goal to save it’s own life. Nothing was done to even make it seem as though the isles want to improve that.
-
Shoe, I don’t get it…would you not expect that Bailey/Okposo/Neilsen being one year older/more mature, and with Tavares, this alone would improve the offense significantly? Even if everything else stays the exact same? Not saying cup or even playoffs, but come on…
-
I just read on the Sporting News website that its thought that Tanguay also negotiated with the Wild and the Islanders and that he didn’t take the offer with the most money.
-
It’s amazing 31 how many Isles Fans just do not get it. This is real life and not building a team on the XBox. Many Isles fans just kill Wang and never say anything about the politians who can make a real difference in passing the LH not only for the Isles but for many on LI.
-
Who has improved more since the end of last season, Tampa or the Islanders? At least Tampa is trying improve by signing free agents and making trades. Garth Snow doesnt have a clue. You could still rebuild and also add pieces via free agency and making trades. This is why we needed an experienced GM going into this years draft.
-
Joe G, I respectfully disagree with you. I guess you can say that Tampa is trying to get better by signing free agents. Can you tell me which player they signed is that fantastic? I agree Tanguay and Ohlund will help them but at this point, Tampa is not rebuilding. They are filling holes by signing free agents and that doesn’t work. Ask the Rangers and the Islanders circa 2002-2007.
-
I tried to book a Hawaii vacation and this point blank website showed up….what the hell is this?
-
It’s almost like Snow and Wang are saying they are throwing this season away. Here’s my problem with standing pat:
If you are doing it looking ahead to next year or knowing in the back of your mind that one day you will have a new stadium and an infusion of cash I can understand sacrificing this season.
But the Islanders are no closer to a new stadium today than they were at the end of last season. And even if they get approval for new digs it will take years to have a new one.
No, this reeks of cutting costs so that if and when they move the team they will be staring at huge cap space and abundance of new money from somewhere else, so they can load up the team in their new city and be ready to win immediately to keep the buzz surrounding a relocated franchise. Teams like Nashville and Columbus have failed to do this in the past and now don’t play in front of anywhere near capacity.
This franchise is gearing up for a spending spree, but it may not be for their current fans. They look to me like they plan to hit the ground running in KC.
And that sucks.
-
If Snow and Wang were trying to throw the season away why would they bring in Biron? I would love to see the fans who are not happy step up and buy the Isles if they think they can do a better job.Be willing to spend the millions Wang has spend and lose 20 million a year with a lousy lease if they think they can do a better job.
-
Ahhh Yes the more to KC
KC? – 32nd largest metro area US/Canada (NY 1st)
KC? – who’s entire metro area has 800,000 less people then Nassau/Suffolk alone
KC? that one that straddles 2 states both in the bottom 40% of US household income
KC? who’s metro area per capita income ranks ranks 32nd in the US
KC? who once upon a time a hockey team that eventually moved to jersey side our own new york metro area
KC? Who’s NFL and MLB franchises have not won a playoff series since 1993
Is that the KC Wang is going to move the Isles to?
-
I was rallying the peasents with torches and pitchforks CB. Whoa.
-
This team is in the process of rebuilding. Bringing in fringe FA’s will not give the youngster’s the playing time they need to improve. Enjoy the competitive hockey and forget the playoff’s for a few more years.
-
#34! You asked just who Snow could acquire to bolster and expedite the rebuild? How about 22 year old Phil Kessel for starters? Boston is desperately trying to move him,not because of disappointment in performance, but because of their Cap strangling situation. He is a restricted free agent, who would ordinarily require 2 first round draft picks as compensation. From what I understand they would be willing to take considerably less in a sign and trade or negotiating rights transaction. Undoubtedly he will cost somewhere in the area of 4-5 mil per season, but we are one of the few teams with the Cap space to do it. My fear is that Wang has put the reigns on spending anything over the required Cap floor. Given this opportunity and the fan passion still existing for the Lighthouse Project, his timing for this behavior couldn’t be worse. It won’t take long for the air of that passion balloon to burst, should the team show itself to be unwatchable, especially after some heavy weight takes an unimpeded and successful run at Tavares. It is quite possible that the comment above mine reads accurately. Could Wang be preparing an enviable Cap allowance asset and Tavares package for sale without spending further on current operations as an option should the TOH turn a deaf ear on his Oct 3rd deadline? Stay tuned!!

CB you gave me a mini breakdown with that Hawaian S@#t #1 I hope you make a deal with the NYI to keep doing PB. If that doesn’t work out choice #2 would be finding someone else to carry on. If that doesn’t happen please let us all know how we can carry on on Fanhouse. It wouldn’t be the same but maybe it can be something.
-
ps to 47 We all know that your new job will be a much broader view of the entire league. That might be very refreshing after the close focus on the NYI. Most of us are interested in the big picture of the entire league and I believe could contribute to a much broader discussion of these issues a la Hockeybuzz. Although we all expect your site to be much more interesting and accurate. Take as example your very accurate prediction of the Isles standing pat-while a certain other individual at various times had at least 6 new players traded to or picked up by the NYI.
-
for a minute, i thought you left us without proper goodbye……..good to see the site still running…….anyways, the islanders will finish in the bottom 5 again people….lottery time again if things stay status quo……every team in the east has gotten better.
-
Leviticus
Those guys being a year older might add a few goals, but expecting much more than that is too much.
We had better hope the LH gets done right around oct 3, when the new season still has some optimism. Once the season gets going, and the isles sink to the bottom, there won’t be much momentum.
BTW, why would they sign biron? If Roloson gets hurt, without biron, all the focus turns back to DP, where the isles don’t want it. Now, they have a backup buffer.
-
#13 is kidding right
-
You can’t build this team -ever- through a nickel and dime budget, period!
By the time our better players have fully developed, we will not be able to afford them.
the Islanders, I fear, will never be in a position to spend more money to get the assets in to go for the cup, plain and simple.
Remember, MM had budget problems early on, today is a slightly different version but painful non the less.
-
It will go one way or the other,Ben #54. This Franchise as we know it will not be on an austerity program very long. If the TOH fails LI,a new owners pockets will open, most likely well beyond our interest(in KC,Hamilton,Vegas or Saskatoon). If an okay is given to get a shovel in the ground sometime this fall,it will result in renewed interest from our currnet owner and motivate him to open his wallet and expedite the rebuild. We will not have to wait very long for the agony or ecstacy.
-
The Islanders need a healthy team for the entire season… now THAT would be great. IMO, at this point, it would be better to have healthy guys all season than to spend money on a lackluster trade. Healthy goalies would be a BIG plus.
Maybe the NHL should add a new rule: no roughing up the rookies unless they initiate the contact. That would protect all the young guys until they got their NHL legs.
-
#48 – couldnt agree with you more. Want to sell more tix? Want to be more competitive? Want to show the fans that we should have hope? TRADE FOR KESSEL !!!
Hes not 31 – he’s 22, and a PROVEN NHL talent. Not trying to get him is ludicrous!! What a great way to rebuild – Tavposokess !! -
that was scary
-
Joey303….how do you know what Boston is asking? How do you know the Isles haven’t had discussions? And if he ends up somewhere else how do you know the other team didn’t offer more or Kessel and agent didn’t have a say? Please stop making it seem so freakin easy!
-
I would have liked to have had Tanguay on the top line with JT…….would have been a pretty good PP with KO, JT, Weight and Streit on the points. However as Oct 3 rapidly approaches, it might all be a moot point.
-
No one said it will be easy – Do I know?? – of course I dont. To answer all your questions…….I dont know any of them. But give it a try – thats what Im asking – Go for it.
-
It is a sad day when the circus in Tampa is more attractive than ours…Either way GO ISLES!

Damn I thought that was it, dont do that to us! We are a bit sensitive with the possible end to point blank, but i knew you would never leave without saying goodbye!
