THE SUMMER’S SECOND BIG NYI DAY
Plus: Lighthouse Corp. sets up a live blog for today
7:45 am - Today is the day. The official Lighthouse site is running a live blog. With no formal press quarters at the Adams Playhouse, this may be your best bet for play-by-play today.
Looks like I’m confirmed to speak at today’s hearing. Sources say my three minutes could come in the noon-2:00 pm range. I’ll do my best to stir it up.
Seth Everett of 1050 ESPN Radio was pretty fired up for our interview last night. Please listen. 23 minutes of Islanders talk starts with Seth’s monologue and then our showdown.
Here’s the Yahoo! Puck Daddy Q & A between Sean Leahy and Point Blank.

seth saying history the glory years mean nothing with this project is the biggest joke i have ever heard…what is any NY team without its history, Maybe the isles are not as rich as the yankess but thay mean as much to any isles fan as it.We need this team here as much as any NY team(I am a HUGE ankee and Knick fan)….and I am a fan that u can not tell otherwise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!wake up espn and seth everett(joke)

Well done, C.B. A great job summarizing the situation and a very lively interview. Seth was very good, as well.
-
Good luck today, guys! Thanks for showing up.
-
Good luck today everyone, I’d be there but i have to concentrate on finding a job
-
Its go time!! Lets make it happen today!

This is my email to ToH today…I am writing this email to show my support for the lighthouse project and keeping the Islanders where they belong, on Long Island. The Island desperately needs something like this to help support the residence and give them hope for the future. I am originally from Port Washington, but have since moved to Atlanta, Ga. because the job market for opportunity is horrible. I am in the restaurant business, and if the project goes through, I would actually consider moving back to the Island to start a business venture in or around the lighthouse project. Please allow Mr. Wang to persue his vision of revitalization of Long Island and the Islanders. The people so desperately need this, or more and more will become like me. Jaded and frustrated enough to just pack up and leave because the future on Long Island does not look that great, with a project like this, that all changes. Please do what is right for the people and put aside politics to do what was asked of yourselves when elected to public office.

Having trouble getting linked to the LH report, any suggestions?
-
Any website able to live blog other than the Light House site?
-
this is what they are using….
-
CB, will you be able to give us recap of the day later tonight or early tomrrow for those of us who won’t be able to make it today?
-
Seth said something that bothered me. That the franchise hasn’t won since 83. Well only 5 of the 9 teams have won since 83. So does that Jets, Knicks and Nets are expendable franchises because they haven’t won. That is not a very good argument. It took the Rangers 54 years to win a cup. Were they expendable in the early 90′s. And unlike the Devil’s they want a new arena where there are actual fans.
-
Thanks Chris.
-
nice job, it got a lot interesting when u started talking instead of the other guy… you also talked about the islanders and not the nets. the 10,000 friggin fans part was great.
-
not gonna lie… getting goosebumps reading the blog from the lighthouse
wish i was there!
-
Maybe I’m biased because I am a Knicks and Isles fan- but are the Nets really more relevant than the Isles (according to Seth)? Give me a break! Like Botta said, if the Isles experienced any kind of success LI would be going nuts for them. Approve the Lighthouse!
-
Seth’s entitled to his opinion. At least he geared that opinion towards creating a lively discussion about the Isles and the Lighthouse…and he knew a thing or two as well…which is more than we can say for some other radio personalities.
-
Anybody at the meeting have advil? My head is pounding.
-
Are you telling me that this whole lighthouse project is being delayed because it will hurt revenue at Roosevelt field mall?
-
I Am here at the hearing and so far garden city needs to get out of the way. They are looking to delay this project with more research and studies. I really can’t care for these people they live in the past. The one guy just speaking about garden city seems jealous garden city doesn’t get the lighthouse. The town of north Hempstead supervisor is definitely pro lighthouse and it’s to bad the coliseum wasn’t further north.
-
Chris is speaking and the board is very annoying none of them show him any respect. They all appear pre occuiped or falling asleep. They also tried and stop him from going at 2 minutes but chis blew them off and kept going. Lots of cheers for Chris.
-
Another pro lighthouse speaker talking and still board shows no respect the bell lady tried cutting him off twice and looked upset. Plus one guy on the board looks to be checking his email rather then listening.
-
politics are boring
-
So The County, Isles fans, Hempstead schools, NORTH Hempstead, and the unions are for this. The ONLY group of people who seem to have reservations, not even saying they are against it, is the Garden City crowd. There is no way this thing doesn’t get done. Yes I will be positive.
-
I was at the hearing earlier today(only could take a half day off from work)
Wang got a HUGE ovation by the crowd. I brought an air horn, so if you heard it, that was me lol
I would say there was around 1,000 people who showed up, more union workers than hockey fans
-
I was there until about 11:00. That’s when the Garden City Civic Association spoke. Booooring!!!
-
They need to realize there are no islands in Kansas City.
Just Build It.
-
Wait a second……not for anything, but if you lived outside of Garden City, you probably didn’t shop there. I know us Hicksville kids couldn’t afford it. It was hard enough shopping in Syosset. How will the Lighthouse take away business from Garden City????
-
For all the talk of there being affordable housing in the Lighthouse, I’m sure there will be an Americana Manhasset feel to the shopping centers, and less TJ Maxx. Then again, I find most of Roosevelt Field too pricey.
-
I feel as though I am the only person with this spin on this, could somebody tell me that I am crazy.
1. I want the Islanders to succeed.
2. I would like Charles Wang to succeed.
3. I want the TOH and Nassau county to grow and thrive.
4. Why do all of these things have to be tied to the success of a SPORTS FRANCHISE IN NY. Licencing fees alone, if the team was marketed correctly, should keep the team in the black in the darkest of periods. They have, supposedly, one of the more lucrative TV deals, albeit with a company who now would rather see them on the TV guide channel.
Why can’t this team make money on it’s own. THis isn’t anti-LH… I’m rather indifferent about the LH, though I want to see it succeed for CW and the ISles… I don’t know if it’s the best thing for LI… though it is the only thing proposed.
My bigger question is, even if the LH is approved, will the ISLANDERS (as a self sustaining entity) be in the BLACK?
Let’s say this gets a green light. Could CW sell the Islanders? Will they be a thriving entity divorced from the LH?
Sure, Islander fans are supportive of the LH because of the Islanders… but why hasn’t anybody been able to solve the smaller problems (lease/mass transit options/marketing/NHL in general) before creating a BEAST which will make the Islanders live and die with a real estate deal.
Well.. i just hope it all works out for the best… But I find it hard to believe that somebody has failed to make a dollar in ten years of owning a NY sports franchise, and we’d all trust him with a $4B+ development deal… something just doesn’t feel right. -
All and all it sounds like this was a pretty successful day and that this defintely could get approved before the deadlinee.
-
#31 Your thoughts and concerns real. But the short answer to your wondering why the Isles are tied to this deal is that their coliseum home base has been very substandard for a long time. There is no team including the Leafs [the NY yankees of hockey] who could prosper there locked into an awful building with terrible contracts related to making money in parking, food merchandise etc. The county has no money so therefore we are locked into the LH. and thats a good place to be!

It was a great 20 minute spot. The highlight for me was your answer to “show me the passion” and your response about 10,000 friggin’ fans showing up to watch Versus on the big screen for the draft. Took the words out of my mouth. Good luck tomorrow, I know you’ll do great.
