HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR CAPTAIN? A year at a time (Doug Weight)? Or longer term (Mark Streit)?
When it comes to the captaincy, what do the Islanders require?
A cornerstone player who’ll be here for a while?
Or the best leader available to get them through this season?
If Garth Snow and Scott Gordon want a mainstay, Mark Streit should be the captain. He is 31 years old, the team’s best player, a strong leader…and signed for four more seasons. After the “C” has been passed around over the last 15 years, it would be a joy to have someone like Streit bring stability to the position. Four months ago, I nominated Streit for the position.
Since then, after watching another offseason of players changing teams across the league, I realized the notion of a long-term captain might be old-fashioned and unrealistic. Steve Yzermans are certainly more the exception than the norm over the last decade, and with free agency at 26 his kind could be an endangered species – franchise future icons like Sidney Crosby notwithstanding.
The Islanders of 2010-11 will be a different crew with loftier expectations than this year’s model. When deciding on a captain, you can make the case the Islanders should only think about one year at a time.
If the Islanders just want a captain for this season, then Doug Weight is the top candidate – edging out Streit and Brendan Witt.
I approached Weight the other day on this subject. Part of what makes him a good captain – and top broadcasting prospect, if he wants it someday - is his ability to break down a situation. Our ground rules were simple: Weight was not campaigning for the Islanders captaincy and I was not giving him his job interview.
Doug spoke and I took notes:
“For starters, the captaincy is an important responsibility. That should be clear. Some people in the game minimize the role. I do not. I know the C is not anything the players take lightly.
“A strong room is a strong room. It’s not all on the captain, but of course he’s a key component. In Edmonton, I was proud to be the captain. I enjoyed overseeing the team events and working to bring everyone closer. It’s a challenge sometimes, but I loved it.
“I don’t know what Scott and Garth have in mind. If they ask me to be captain, I’ll be very proud of the honor and I’ll take the responsibility seriously. I’ve told you this before: I’m not here to float into my late 30s. Captain or not, I’m going to contribute on the ice and lead. Who knows? Maybe I’m here for just this season, but I feel I have plenty of good play left. No matter what Garth and Scott decide to do with the letters, there are plenty of leaders on this team.”
No matter who they pick, it is premature – and completely unnecessary – to rush letters on youngsters that haven’t even enjoyed breakout seasons yet. There will be plenty of time for Kyle Okposo and the others, if they earn it on the ice first. The Islanders would be kidding themselves if they give a letter to a young player in a PR nod to their rebuilding program.
No one knows the personalities inside the Islanders’ locker room better than the players themselves. Since they will most likely not preside over a team vote, Snow and Gordon will make the choice. If the GM and coach have the slightest bit concern whether Streit should be captain this year, they should give the C to Weight and As to Streit and Witt or a younger veteran such as Trent Hunter. In a year, they can decide again on Streit or if someone else is better equipped to assume the mantle.
If the brass believes Streit is the most qualified, he should be Islanders captain for the next few years. In Weight, he’ll have the perfect sounding board. “If I’m not the captain,” Weight said, “it’s not like I’m going to change. I’ll do whatever I can to assist my teammate who gets it.”
Discuss the captaincy here, and enjoy the game.

Streit, hands down
-
I love Dougie Weight but its gotta be Streit.
-
I’ve been saying that the team should rotate A’s this year and let a true leader amongst them step up. We as fans don’t realize the pride a player receives when they get a letter on their jersey. Just watch certain players from the past, when awarded a letter for a game or two. They immediately step up their game. Perfect example, Steve Webb, game 6 2002. In addition, last year, when Players like Streit and Marty were given the A. Their play was more confident, their skating was better, they were just better players.
Rotate the ‘A’, you will see better players step up. Just my opinion. -
Who is the “mdost qualifie”? I’d give it to Weight for the year, but I think if he does well this year he’ll be back. We’ll just trade him right before we go on our next run, a la Ed Westfall.
-
Streit. Guy does it all…he’s a voice, from what we’ve read here, and you know he will back up any words with his game and his numbers, which will most likely lead the team in more than one category.
It’s one thing to be a voice in the locker room, but young guys with talent may just start to tune you out a bit if their numbers dwarf yours (not saying that Weight won’t put up numbers, but there’s much less of a question that Streit will lead team and maybe even league categories with his production).
-
weight. look at what a good mentor he is to tavares
-
Originally I though Weight for 1 or 2 years, then Okposo.
But lately I have changed my mind. I think Streit stepped up last year, seemed to grow as a leader as the year went on, and deserves the C.
Actually I think either way works. I do not want 3 As or a rotation.
-
There’s really no decision here. Its gotta be Streit. He’s the best player on the team and seems to command the respect of the team. He’s also signed for four more years. Doug Weight doesn’t need a “C” to command respect from his teammates. His resume and track record are all he needs for his teammates to lend credence to his words. Give Streit the “C” and Hunter and Witt the “A”‘s.
-
I say Weight. Streit is our best player, but Weight has experience as a captain and he is the perfect torch bearer to the next young player who steps up and is our captain. We are building something here and for me it makes sense.
-
yeah i totally agree with you Jethro09. Streit is the best choice. Weight will have an “A”
-
Weight should keep it warm for KO JT or Bailey.
-
Class act.
-
Weight has much more experience with the NHL game as well. I think the Sabres rotated the captaincy last year and perhaps the year before, which wouldn’t be unnecessary either. The captain has to be the best voice, with the best hockey IQ, not ultimately the most skilled. How that works out… who knows, but I mean honestly, you cannot go wrong with either.
-
its gotta be streit..if you don’t think he can be a mentor look what he did for gervais last year
-
Doug Weight should be the Captain. Leadership, hard work, grit…sets a hell of an example. Let Bailey, KO and Tavares learn from him, and hopefully one of them can take the torch and lead us in the future.
-
streit. while it si a good argument about a “captain for this year” you need stability. what is left out of this argument is if the isles get offered __ for weight at the trade deadline time.
You are not trading streit, but it is at all possible that you trade weight if the offer is right.
-
I think Park, Weight, and Streit should all be alternates. They all could teach the young kids something, and in this rebuilding phase thats what we need our captain to do. We dont necessarily need a C right now
-
I thought about it for about 5 mins after reading your thread CB … I think Weight is most qualified for many reasons. I think he shows leadership even without a letter.
I never ever believed the best and most skilled player should wear the C … Captaincy isn’t about stats … it’s about leadership and guidence. It’s about balancing team responsibility with personal goals. Some GREAT players just can’t handle the letter. Weight has proven he can in the past.
Streit is a suburb player and team leader … but he’s unproven in bearing the burden of the “C” … I say give it to Doug now … and it’s Streits to win next season after another year in the NHL.
-
I really have been wrong about doug weight. I always liked him as a player but i thought it was wrong signing him prior to last season. I wasn’t interested in watching Miro Satan,Ruslan Fedotenko, Billy Guerin, mike Comrie and then doug weight recently skate around the ice instead of a young prospect who should be developing. BUT ….the fact of the matter was there were really no prospects worthy of playing time except for the random few.I quickly enjoyed Doug Weight playing,as I did with Mike Sillinger. I felt that they were the type of players that seem to rarely make a mistake and always do the nice little things (the nice pass, the big clean hit, clearing the defensive zone, winning a faceoff, etc) perfect role models for young centers as brendn witt/mark Streit are that for defensman.
I hope doug weight plays a few more years, not the one n done that i initially hoped for…I was wrong,my bad!!
Go Doug Weight!! -
Well we know Weight’s position on this…I wonder what Streit is thinking. Does he even consider himself a candidate? Surely any player would be ecstatic to be given such an honor, but does he feel like he’s right for the job? Personally, I am not entirely sure. I say Weight or wait, even if it is just to give it to Streit a little later.
-
I would like to see Streit be the captain…Since this is a young team I’d like them to get a feel for Streit as a captain in the near future. I love Dougie and wouldn’t mind one bit if he were captain either…but I’d go with Streit.
-
the C doesn’t go to the best player. It goes to the leader of this team.
WEIGHT FOR CAPTAIN
-
The captaincy of the 2009-2010 New York Islanders is not what’s important. It’s the captain next season and beyond that matters in terms of leadership.
For the sake of the future, Weight must be captain in 2009-2010 because it makes the team flexible going forward. If Tavares establishes himself on the ice and in the organization, you make him captain NEXT season and don’t look back.
If Tavares needs another development year, you re-sign Weight for 1 more year and keep the C with him until JT can take it.
If you give it to Streit, and Tavares earns the right, you cannot easily take it away from Streit without trading him – which NO ONE wants to do.
Come on guys. This isn’t about this year, this is about the entire re-building effort working out. All the growing pains. Tavares must be the next long-term captain, and for that reason and the relationship he’s building with Doug Weight — Weight must wear the C this season.
-
I’d pick Streit as my C and Weight and Park as the As. Next year I’d give an A to Okposo.
-
#17 19 ISLE in NJ 22 I agree with you. Yes Mark was our best player – but it remains to be seen if he can go out and motivate and guide the younger players. Dougie has that intangible value of a leader and I think he can do the most for the all the young players on the team. I’m sure all of the young ones trying for a spot know who Doug is, I’m not so sure they know who Mark is (as a good a player he is). Doug’s reputation precedes him and that would be a big benefit to everyone.
-
Weight should be capt this year.the man is a leader
-
Steit, whether you consider it short or long term. (Or until 91 is ready.) Most talented player on team, works hard, plays in all situations, regular strength, PP, PK (so he’s out there at all key situations). And he was the go to media guy for most of last year, so we know he can speak for team.
-
I’m going to go off the board a bit and say Hunter gets the C and Weight and Streit get the A’s. I don’t think Witt should get an A based on some of the selfish comments he made last season. He should have kept his comments in house. If injuries happen to any of the 3 guys I mentioned, then Park would be next on the list.
-
Either Weight or why isn’t anybody mentioning Park (he deserves at least an “A”). He does not get as much credit for the intangibles.
-
Bob #29. Thats exactly what I was thinking, Plus weight is a candidate for a trade deadline deal.
-
Streit for 2 reasons.
1. Longer Term with the team.
2. Dougie Weight could be trade bait come Feb/March. If he’s playing as well as he did in the beginning of last year…he might be shipped out for a draft pick. Who wants to ship out their captain…again.
-
I just watched the Islanders TV clip on newyorkislanders.com with Doug Weight working with John Tavares and some of the other young players. His leadership skills with the other players is very obvious. I think Doug Weight should be this years Isles capyain.
-
I am loving weight more every day. However, Streit needs to be this team’s captain. Everyone saw how bruno improved at the end of the year when he was paired with streit. Furthermore, Streit really proved it to me at the end of the season. I have forgotten the exact game, but I remember after a game late in the season, in which the islanders season was pretty much over, he got pissed and was calling out the team and power play, saying they need to work harder. That is the attitude I want leading the team.
-
NYIFAN 09, #30, i am pretty sure park is already slotted in for the “A”, if he wasn’t, i agree with you, he would be a fantastic captain as well.
-
Isles cannot go wrong with Streit or Weight. My view is longterm stability is not overrated and it is something they Isles desperatley need, so go with Streit. Then next year one of the youngsters get an A if they are ready but thank God it is not Yashin!!!!!!!!!!
-
Completely torn here.
Weight is the true leader of this team, but the fact that he may be trade fodder come March is an issue.
Streit is in it for the long haul, but I’m not convinced he’s “C” material.
If I’m the Isles, I roll 3 “A’s” until one of the franchise cornerstones emerges. Either JT or KO.
-
I like Streit, but the guy is one year removed from being an outcast, unwanted D-man / winger for an average Montreal team. And now he’s supposed to be an Islander captain? I think Weight for a year, see if one of the young kids emerges, and if not, worst-case scenario, Streit will still be around.
-
Tavares should be the captain….he’s the franchise…
-
streit
-
Streit.
-
hunter, weight, witt, streit in that order for my captaincy preferences
-
You give it to Weight and you see how the season goes. Then you either sign Weight to a one year extension or trade him at the deadline. If you trade him,Streit becomes your new captain until his contract is done. At which time Tavares,Okposo,or Bailey will be ready for the captaincy. My bet is on Josh Bailey. If Weight does sign an extension, maybe one of the kids(Bailey)is ready in two years.
-
as much as i love streit. I would not mind given it to weight for this year.
-
I agree with Bob (#29). Hunter.
-
I was definately thinking Streit until I read the quotes of Weight! Either will be great. Here’s to a season of pleasant surprises and expectations being exceeded!
LET’S GO ISLES! -
what… no game thread lol lol
lets go isles!
-
hate msg. blackout nhl network hd only to get msg+ in sd
nice real nice. -
Hockey is back! LETS GO ISLANDERS!
-
not a moment too soon………DROP THE PUCK!
-
It looks like a college game, what with the stands and that great scoreboard at the Canucks end.
Is Streit not playing, or is Gordon looking for humor putting Sutton on the PP?
-
What about Trent Hunter as captain?
-
If anyone watched Islanders TV today the interview of Weight should have cemented it for him. I was never a big Weight fan and was against them even getting him, but after today he has to be the captain. I don’t think he will get a ton of points, but thats not what being a captain is all about. I hate when a team gives a player a C because he gets alot of points, that means nothing. After listening to Weight I want to lace them up and be on his team…
-
Totally off the captain thing, but Josh Bailey has looked really strong on the puck tonight. I keep noticing him tamby and blake out there.
Captain… if i had to pick one… Weight
-
johny sim ! yeaaa
-
Simmer first goal of the year. haha. great to have Islanders hockey back in my life
-
Jon Sim?? Not to shabby of a move
-
Jon sim wearing an “A”….hmmmmmmmmmmm
-
Feels good to celebrate a goal again, what a long couple of months
-
Amen to that. The announcers keep talking about Tambellini’s “breakout” year, and I can’t tell if they mean last year’s seven goals or what we are all expecting him this year…
-
Dear MSG+,
Please. For the love of God. Stop showing that same commercial over and over and over and over and over and over and you get the point. Thank you.
-
Jon Sim is our captain lol
-
#61 AMEN! That is the most annoying commercial.
Very impressed with Bailey beating Scatchard on two consecutive key face offs. We know Scatchard was a face off specialist.
Isles won three of the four fights (Sutton was the loss).
Not hard to notice how much bigger and intense Van plays. Even when the Isles hit it wasn’t with much velocity.
Isles are still not physical. Van constantly got in the Islanders faces at every opportunity and were the aggressors.
Better get used to seeing guys like Comeau getting mobbed and roughed up while his teammates on the ice are not even in sight of the camera. That is lame.
Thank God for D-prospects like De Haan, Harmonic, Neimi, and Ness because Hillen (how many times are we going to see him get blown up this year?), MacDonald, Kohn are blah.
Why doesn’t Snow understand that bigger more complete players can also move the puck up ice just as good if not better then these small soft guys?
What a waste of a marketing opportunity. You have an internationally broadcast game and instead of inserting your young stars to market them and your team you fill your roster with guys that if they are in the organization (AHL) for a year they’d be lucky. Isles need some help in the business end.
Comeau and Bailey look good.
It was nice to watch hockey again even if it confirmed what most of us expected that this team was still going to be easy to push around.
-
Bailey – Comeau – Tambellini line looked the best.
And what a lame commercial.. of all the things you can have the Islanders of today doing.. and they pick GOLF?!?! I cringed when Comeau jumped into Brunos arms.
-
After reading that, Weight and give it to Streit next time.
Sutton is such a pansy.
-
Nothing to cringe about IMO, Jason- it was funny and the fact is that a large portion of hockey players DO play golf. I totally agree with mLem though on the number of TIMES it was shown! It was perfectly fine I just saw it waaaaay too many times.
As far as the Captaincy goes, I think Weight is a good choice. 19 ISLE in NJ 22 in post 19 (appropriately enough!) explained it perfectly IMHO.
Fact is that Doug already moved into being the acting Captain naturally as soon as Billy G was traded. Its who he is at this point in his career, and providing guidance for this young team is the exact reason he was so vocal about wanting to stay here.
I think it is far more important to pick the right Captain to handle the job at a particular time than it is to pick one mainly because he will wear the C longer. I mean thats nice and all but it really is not important.
That being said, if it wound up being Streit I would not be disappointed. I simply do not under ANY circumstances want to see a C anywhere near kids like Okposo, Bailey, Tavares, etc for at least another couple of seasons. There is zero reason to throw that kind of thing on their backs when they should be concentrating on developing (or continuing to develop) as effective NHL players.
-
I think Weight would make for the better captain, but he is only signed for 1 more year. I’d like a bit of stability at the position. Gotta give it to Streit with Weight a permanent A and a 2nd roving A between Witt, Hunter, and Park
-
Streit…
-
The one thing the Isles need for the next few years is consistency. Consistency, with being able to put out the same lines everynight. Consistency in the effort on and off game days. Consistency as to wears the ‘C’. My vote is for Streit.
-
with the kids being so young, i think weight for leadership so the kids can learn–Obviously he wont be playing for alot longer, so giving it to Streit, Tavares or someone else in a few years wont be a big deal–I vote weight
-
I say give the C to the true leader in the locker room. The guy who doesnt mind getting in anybodys face when they are slacking…and one who demands respect on the ice by his play and hustle. A leader by example….who could this be?
-
Going back to that commercial, i think that if that gets around the league it could start a bunch of jokes. Hopefully Comeau will sink some goals like he sank that putt eh?
-
It was bce to see some fights. Id like Reich on the team!!!
-
Islesfan999 (73): I’d agree with you if Reich could skate, pass the puck, or otherwise play hockey.
My enduring memory of Reich from the game last night wasn’t his fights (though he won both of them. It was when he took a pass in the neutral zone, lost the puck in his own skates, then had the puck stolen from him by a Canuck who hustled towards the Islanders net with it. Reich spent a good 4 or 5 seconds looking around for the puck, completely lost while the Nucks generated a rush.
-
Lets not forget that the best case scenario for Doug Weight is for him to put up solid numbers and then get traded at the deadline for some prospects. May be most qualified for captaincy, but doesn’t seem to make sense if he isn’t going to last through this season…
-
To those of you who seem to want to find reasons not to select Streit as captain, like whether he’s “unproven bearing the burden of the C”, you do know he’s been the captain of his national team, right? And what the hell does how/why he left Montreal have anything to do with what he means to this Islanders team? Please.
All that said, I don’t think you could go wrong with either he or Weight.
-
I believe there aren’t many classier or more positive minded players than Doug Weight. Even if he’s not here for long I think he is the best candidate. He’s a great communicator and very likable. Players will definatly respond to a guy like that.
-
I think the players should vote on who becomes captain. They know best who they look up to or try to emulate.
-
Mark Streit
-
A captain does not have to be a great player, nor does he have to be one of the team’s best player. A captain, and the alternates, must have the respect of his teammates, a good raport with the coaching staff, and have the same with on-ice officials.
-
streit nuff said move on.
-
My vote is for Streit. Given the way things are going there are probably going to be a lot of players pissed at Gordon and the whole organization by mid-year. Adherence to a system that put them firmly in last place last year.
Terrible ice surface.
Maybe another flood in the lockers.
Guys with one ways getting sent to the minors after they rehabbed from major leg injuries.
Letting players get decapitated while you leave a behemoth on the bench, because he wasn’t “ready”.
Weight getting traded at the deadline.
Witt getting shopped at the deadline.
Not that all these things are going to happen AGAIN, but…
At least Streit can tell them to go &*^% themselves in three or four different languages…
Nobody wants to play for them, and they just keep making it worse… and it won’t get any better until they move, and Wang sells the team. Neither will probably happen… so we might as well have stability with the “C” for four years. -
I watched Tambellini and he played hard like he needs to score this year. He didn’t do his floating routine but anyone can see that he is challenged by his smallish size. The real difference between the 25+ scorers and all the rest is the ability to get goals down low. Bossy wasn’t big but he had very exceptional instincts particularly anticipation and a quick strong accurate release from anywhere on the ice. He was drafted #15 and beleieve it or not Tambellini was in the 20s. Again Tambellini is either going to be a 4th liner or a successful AHL career high point guy.
-
What I would like to know is what will they do with Jon Sim? Hasn’t the guy been proving himself as the best player on the minor league team? Before they sent him down he really elevated his play. I don’t know how good he really can be but it will be interesting to see what happens.
CB, any thoughts???
-
as much as i dont like him Sim is better NHLer than Tambellini.
Tambellini is having a hard time adapting to NHL. he still takes very low percentage bad angle shots and tries to shot thru Defensmen when they already too close to him and gets blocked 9 out of 10 times. -
Doug Weight should be the captain.
-
What? No Yashin? LOL!
-
C – Weight
A – Streit
A – OkposoNext year.
C – Streit
A – Okposo
A – Tavares -
streit. longtime captain of the swiss national team. no offense to weight, but streit is still underestimated.
-
Isles site 09-10 rosters lists
Richard Park and Brendan Witt with “A”s
no C yet -
DOC areant you asking alot of Tavares in that situation. Dont forget the player wearing the A or C must stand up in the locker room and be force with players who are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. Even in Year 2 as 20 year old Tavares is not getting in the face of a Witt, or park. Tavares, okposo bailey all have time. I have said it before, it 5 years all of those guys are just 25 and 24. everyone relax breath deeply. this year I want to see
Streit — C stability
Weight — A
Witt, Hunter, Park — during injuries or rotating Athe young guys have so much time let them play without the additional burden.
-
Either Weight for a year or have 3 As. Streit had a great year last year but still has to prove he’s C material for the long-term. Plus, who knows who might step up or come on board this year that could be C material?
-
FELIX:
I say Tavares as assistant in year two NOT as a Captain in year two. The captain I suggest is Streit for the very reason that you mentioned.
I’m thinking that Witt may be gone soon as will Sutton… and all that will be here are young guys next year. NO?
but I do understand your point.
DOC
-
what about park. i think he should get consideration. the guy goes all out every night 110%
-
DOC, I do nto disagree about witt sutton being gone at that point and then what do you have. While we all hope Tavares is our crosby or kane. Right now we have an unknown. If he proves to be what we want him to be no problem. I just have an isseu mentioning him at this point. Okposo absolutely a consideration in a year or two given that we have heard from various sources that he is a leader among the younger players. also look at someone like hunter as well. if streit has the C which I believe is the appropriate player, okposo an A, hunter deserves mention. Now however, if Tavares busts out and scores 80 points, by all means give the kid an A. Toews Kane and all of ther young captains all have one thing in common that is elite talent.
Not saying your idea is wrong, just before we throw tavares in the mix let the year start.
-
Bummer that Tavares was not in the lineup last night.
-
09-10 -Weight or 3 A’s
10-11 -Okposo
I think Kyle displayed alot of what islander fans expect in their captain down the stretch last year.Excellent two-way play and solid communication with the media. -
Splash of Coke with a Lime!
-
Does it really matter? Isles will be picking in the lottery again this year.
-
I say don’t have a set capt. and rotate the A’s. Im dne with having a deff. cat. every year. See who steps up, give it to them for the long term.
-
I think they should wait to name a captain, see who rises to the top and then have the players vote between two candidates. On another note the newsday coverage is just weak. They have someone there at the camp and all we get is 25 word snippets mostly of quotes from the players. Sometimes I check their blog just to see how laughable the coverage is. Point Blank just makes newsday obsolete.
-
Was it me or did Sutton lose a fight to a guy listed 5’11″ 184?
-
Streit on time..
-
Dougie Weight. If the Isles really like him and are confident in him, they should give him the C out of respect at least. Good captain to have on a rebuilding, young team. Streit gets an A and should be considered Defensive captain. And Dwayne Roloson the #1 netminder. Done. Drop the puck!
-
I changed my mind. I’d give the C to Weight an A to Trent Hunter (to keep him motivated) and the other A to Brendan Witt. Witt deserves to be the lone defenseman with an A. Streit can wait and prove himself more. WItter should be considered lone Defensive Capt. I’m sticking to this until further review.
-
CB – can we get vote on the main page? 105 comments – what are the totals? I’m for Streit.

Mark Streit
