ISLANDERS CLAIM ROB SCHREMP ON WAIVERS
Skilled, underachieving (so far) C dumped by Oil
11:50 am - The Islanders have claimed center Rob Schremp on waivers from Edmonton. The former first round pick comes with a reputation for cockiness. Especially with Frans Nielsen out, this is a worthwhile, cheap pickup for the Islanders.
It will also present quite a challenge for Scott Gordon. As skilled as Schremp may be, several teams in the league passed up the chance to trade a draft pick for him. Although we have heard reports of Edmonton’s AHL affiliate being a mess last season, Schremp posted pathetic numbers in the minor leagues for someone of his ability: 7 goals and 42 points in 69 games. Robbie Schremp, this is your wakeup call.

knew it. why not?
-
i think he deserves to b look at! maybe EDM just wasnt developing him in the right way! either way i’m happy by this pickup!
-
I like it. I know he isnt that big, but he has the skills. Give him his shot, it can’t hurt…
-
good move by garth. low risk, high reward move. he has the potential to become a top 6 forward. if he doesn’t we can easily get rid of him. schremp really needed to get out of edmonton.
-
…smallish….pfft.
-
Hopefully it’s our turn to pick up someone else’s cast off and turn them into a star.
-
No harm no foul!
-
I love this move! I think this kid could be a great pick-up for us.
-
worth a chance – he should be able to crack this roster…should play many min – still young, only 23
-
They had to do it and give him a shot. He could be motivated to prove himself and become this year’s Versteeg (who, let’s remember, was also a waiver pickup). If he doesn’t, he only cost money.
-
This is Robert Nilsson pt2. Gobs of offensive talent, just doesn’t have the drive…. thinks he can get by on that talent alone, and he’s waaaay overconfident. I think Coach Gordon chews this kid up and spits him out…. JMHO, he can’t handle playing this type of system, and he also suffers foot in mouth disease, which rubs his teamates the wrong way.
-
Last significant waiver pickup was with Ozzy in ’01-’02…what do we really have to lose? He’s continuing the youth movement, and what did the team give up? Nothing. If he clicks in Gordon’s system, we win, but if he fails miserably, we DON’T lose, and that works for me.
Good pickup.
-
it won’t hurt to take a look at the kid. best of luck robbie!
-
great move like many have said, low risk high reward if it works out.
-
I’d rather have claimed Alex Giroux from Washington. It was a numbers game over there and the guy was a scoring machine in Hershey last two seasons.
-
Turn him into a winger and replace tambellini with him. He couldn’t possibly fail as hard as tambs…and if he does then our team will be exactly in the same spot we are now. With an underachieving highy toughted first round prospect.
-
If he doesn’t work out, please put him back on waivers when Neilsen comes back.
-
i love the pickup. nothing to lose, everything to gain. give the kid a long look in the nhl. his time has come. hopefully he just needs a change of scenery and a real shot at ice time. tavares, bailey, okposo, tambellini, bergenhiem, witt, dipietro, schremp, almost half our team will be former first rounders….now its time for some of them (tamby, schremp) to prove they belong there. atleast we know tamby and schremp can be our shootout specialists lol.
-
I was Angry when Isles passed on him in his draft year. Lots of offensive talent…needs change of scenery…..similar to the Tambellini scenario….but maybe this one works…I had though trade Jeff for Shremp would have made sense. Could actually be the setup guy JT needs…..could be a win…..if its a bust-so what…Does anyone think we were playoff bound anyway?
-
Love this move!
It’s time to nut up Robbie!
-
He’s listed at 5-11, 200 lbs, so I don’t know about being smallish. Haven’t seen him play yet….maybe he plays smallish.
-
defintely does not hurt to pick him up….i would rather see the isles give this guy a shot then jeff tambellini
-
I remember a small kid in Calgary’s training camp who was dumped in a similar fashion. Smallish, but tons of skill. That kid turned into Martin St. Louis. Sometimes these small forwards just need teh right system and atmosphere to excel in, and the Islanders have tons of room for skilled players. He can come right in and start as a top 6 forward, assuming he has the right attitude, and is willing to work.
-
PP Unit of Streit/Weight
Okposo/Tavares/SchrempWe can move the puck better than we have in years for sure.
-
Double W has a point…..Marty St. Louis was a same situation and I bet Calgary kicks its self in the rear to this day for that
-
He is not fast, average skater at best.
-
I happen to love this pickup. I think he could be a solid 2nd liner.
-
This move had been rumored for a while. Apparently the Oiler’s GM discussed trading him to the Isles at the draft but Snow balked at the price.
I concur that it is worth the look and let us see what he can get done. In many ways there are several guys on this team that needs to show what type of player they really are. I wouldn’t put him in the line up at the expense of an enforcer. While I think if Schremp plays well he can be a trade asset in the future. Snow still has done nothing to address the size, toughness, and fighting needs of the Isles or Bridgeport.
He should continue to monitor the waiver wire all season being they have the first claim but before the season starts he needs to make a trade or three.
-
This move would have been even better if we had managed to send Tambellini to Edmonton in exchange.
-
the only thing I worry about is if he does not produce, the islanders will still keep him around. lets be honest, we have enough guys on this team who don’t produce and probably would not be in the NHL if the islanders were not a team.
-
COOL–another team’s cast-off dwarf who can’t fight. Just what the Isles needed.
-
mtrico – you can’t send tambellini to Edmonton – he only plays well when his dad is watching. If he plays for his dad every night, he’ll become an all star, record breaking power forward!
-
Pass on Schremp. Pick up Curly. Nyuk Nyuk.
C’mon, someone had to say it.
-
Somewhere in Ottawa, Mike Comrie is just shaking his head, slowly and sadly.
-
The difference with Martin St. Louis is that he was always considered a hard worker if I remember correctly… but was just viewed as being too small.
With Schremp there are questions regarding his work ethic.
-
I like the move cause its a no lose,………….however…Marty St Louis? solid 2nd liner? Are we kidding?
I will buy beers for all of sec 303 if he turns into St Louis -
Worth a chance. Star in junior, an absolute wizard with the puck perhaps he just needs a fresh start.
-
@35 Comrie is on the Oilers again not the Sens
-
We continue to pick up the retreads from the rest of the league and it’s getting old. Enforcer please.
-
They had to give this a shot, imo, and I don’t claim to know much about Schremp other than scanning comment sections of random hockey forums. Most Edmonton fan comments I’ve read indicate they’re happy to be rid of him and that he’s been a severe disappointment (some even labeling him a bust). So it looks like this will be quite the project for Gordon. But they needed to do something to try to improve this team in the skill department, so I will give a nod to Garth for at least doing something in an offseason where it seems he does not have much fiscal authority to go out and snap up talent. Hopefully Gordon can succeed where the Edmonton coaching staff failed.
-
I like it! Kid got talent!
-
Schremp is nothing more than the Oilers version of Tambellini. But when you pick him up for free I cant complain. Maybe sticking Tamby and Schremp together may give them some extra motivation.
-
May work out with him dishing the puck to JT. He was in Springfield last year and CB you are correct about it being a mess. That includes poor coaching amongst other things. Overall, nice pick up.
-
The kid is fast, talented, and has potential, but like other fans have stated, another SMALL retread from the waiver wire. Not complaining, but I would feel better about the season if we had some size and muscle to go along with the already smallish and non-protected forwards. JT is not small, but if all remember, Sid had some size to protect him, even in his first year, AKA Eric Goddard..
-
How does the fact that he has to be on the NHL Roster effect the team? Will he really make the opening day lineup?
-
Nice pick-up….if it works out, great, if not, oh well. Hopefully he knows that this is basically his chance to prove Edmonton wrong.
-
Why not? They’re not going to the playoffs this year anyway, see what he’s got. They’ll need depth anyway with all the injuries they’re likely to have.
-
For those ready to throw Tamby under a bus, I’d rather him in the line-up than Thompson. If this isn’t his breakout year, THEN let him go. He seems to slowly be ‘getting’ it.
-
Schremp would make a good man for Bailey. Bailey is playmaker and Schremp a finisher. I’m excited to see how this all goes down, but Schremp can be an excting player to watch, hopefully they lights are on and he’s home.
-
just my 2 cents…sometimes in life it takes a kick in the butt before potential is realized, and in professional sports the waiver wire more often than not, serves as that kick….for the price the team paid, maybe this works out well for all involved. If he can pick up Gordon’s system and contribute, good for him, if not the door won’t be hard to find.
-
I don’t think you can compare Schremp to Tambellini just yet. Tamby has played in 100+ NHL games. Schremp has played in 7 NHL games, and has 3 points. He just never did enough in the training camps to make Edmonton keep him. I’m sure Edmonton didn’t want to have to put him on waivers, but that’s the only way they could get him down to the AHL.
-
Just to put a positive note out there, Tamby and Schremp could be a very good one-two punch in shootouts.
I still have hope that both players have productive years
-
Why not? We didn’t have one 20 goal scorer last year. Eventually one of these guys has to work out.
-
Schremp is a shootout specialist at this point. The Isles gave him a roster spot he did not earn. I do not like this.
-
whats the difference – this team will be drafting #1 overall again no matter what retreads they pick up
-
they are stocking up for the cup run this year
-
He is young, he is talented, and he needs a chance. He may turn out to be a great fit for this team and the rebuild. And if the Isles draft number one again next year, I won’t be unhappy. I’d rather them finish last and have some of the kids make strides than finish 9th and get a later pick.
-
I’m reading comments about this story on TSN and the guys commenting there for the most part are wishing him luck, or are cursing Oiler management for getting nothing for him and never truly giving him a chance…..Go Islanders….I love this pick up…you watch boys.
-
Smart. No downside. If he is the 2nd coming of Tomas Pock just waive him and put him in the ECHL.
-
Snow is doing JT, KO, and others an injustice by not picking up some protection for them…It’s gona be a tough division this year and right now, it looks like we’re the whipping boys
-
I think it’s good move, better Schremp who has some talent than that collection of no-talent stiffs like Jackman, Moore, Reich, Rechlicz and Thompson, that clutter up the Islanders last in the league roster.
Schremp comes cheap, didn’t cost anything and easy to dump if he produces like Nate “The-Not-So-Great” Thompson (2 Goals 2 Assists in 43 games) You don’t keep players like that, you cut them!
Where’s Bates and Hilbert when you don’t need them!
-
Former first round pick- could be a nice pickup. You know the old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treaure”. Some guys blossom with a change of scenery. Low risk high reward pickup. I like it Hey Ya never know-
-
BTW- the guy has amazing skills. Check you tube (type Rob Schremp) and watch what this guy can do in a shootout. I mean sick stuff-
-
I like the pickup, but it can’t come at the expense of one of the tough guys. Thompson’s gotta go.
-
I don’t see the harm in taking this risk if its even considered that.
Short leash I’d say if he does lack the work ethic and his attitude is a problem.
Something tells me this will be a steal though.Hate to say it but I hope this and Moulson means a goodbye to the likes of Thompson. Tambellini…short leash as well.
I still desperately want us to make a move for a legit heavyweight enforcer. -
Let’s hope for MARC SAVARD # 2…
Good move by the Islanders.
Worth the gamble.
Worst case scenario he is sent back to AHL…
-
I like it. As people have said, little risk and I like that it adds a bit of competition among the forwards to make the team. With Joensuu,Martin and perhaps one or two more over the next two years, the Isles lineup will include some more skilled players.
-
I hope this isn’t Mike Comrie 2. You know some of those same fans applauding this would be calling Garth the worst of names if Schemp turns out to be a bust.
-
Can the Isles move him to B-port w/out passing through waivers?
-
CJ- No he would have to go through waivers again to be sent down.
-
Nice move by Snow! The Isles could afford it, now is the time to experiment, and with only cash as compensation, its easy just to cut him if he doesn’t work out.
Taking a spin of the comments section on tsn, it seems this guy is hot-headed, with questionable attitude, however, most posts say he has tremendous skill and needed a change of scenerey and a real shot in the NHL. I’ve also read some posts that this guy is flashy and a great passer. Might be JT’s future linemate
-
He has got to be more skilled than most of our roster. He could potentially surprise us and become a 60 pt player.
-
Shremp can’t hurt, could have a big upside. BTW If we get an enforcer he will be suspended for 10 games for intent based on the fact that he is on the roster for the defense of players who will be pummelled by players who will then be applauded by Colon Campbell for the hard nosed aggressive play that makes the NHL great. double standard must end Fire Colon Campbell NOW!!!
-
CB: Are we sure this signing comes at no cost? I’m not too familiar with the waiver process but don’t we lose our #1 waiver choice by selecting Schremp? Doesn’t this mean that we drop to the bottom of the waiver list now? So, if an enforcer is cut, we now have 30th preference?
-
A no lose proposition. As a junior,he was a wicked scoring machine winning a Memorial Cup.Hoping that a major change in latitude will result in a change in attitude. If he doesn’t shape up, goodbye. He is coming home as he was originally from Rochester NY.World class skill level.
-
This may spell the end for JT!!! Sorry! Jeff Tambellini!!!
-
What the hell does it hurt to take a chance on this kid, especially for what they paid for him? Not like he’s gonna be in the lineup at the expense of Jackman or Rechlicz, anyway. He’ll either fit right into the 3rd line center spot for the first month of the season (sorry, Trevor Smith), while Nielsen is out, or he’ll be a healthy scratch. Low risk gamble, IMHO.
So who wants to set the over/under for his first groin injury?
-
Players sometimes need a fresh start. This could turn out really good for us, he has the ability.
-
apparently tampa has placed d-man matt lashoff on waivers. he would also be a nice addition. has a history with gordon too.
-
Add another AHL type player on the roster. There is something to lose and that is to let a talented young player stay in the minor leagues to let this Tambellini retread take up space along with his big attitude and 3 assists in a few NHL games last year.
-
You must be at least THIS SHORT to play on the Isles. Well I like the fact we’re trying, but this guy seems like a waste of time. Hopefully he can help out the Sound Tigers eventually.
-
sounds like nothing but trouble
-
I’d give Lashoff a serious look. Has very good potential and would add some much needed size to the blueline. A good upgrade over Meyer. Like others have mentioned, has a history with Gordon (in fact, Lashoff was Gordon’s top D).
-
Wow I’m very surprised to see Lashoff’s name as a player on waivers. I thought he was a big time prospect that Tampa acquired at the deadline last year. I remember reading a lot of positive stuff about him at the time that they traded for him. He comes from the Boston system so I’m sure Coach Gordon has worked with him. Go get ‘em Snowy!
-
love the move snow, no brainer. CAN YOU SAY PERFECT FIT?
-
I think was a good move but I don’t understand the need for another small forward when Randy Jones and Matt Lashoff are both out there on the waiver wire. Jones has 2 full seasons nhl experience and decent numbers and Lashoff was 1st round pick with big upside. Also both have good size.
-
another intriguing target: the caps place lw chris bourque on waivers. ray’s kid put up good numbers in the ahl. seems like he’s just stuck on a team that’s packed with talented forwards.
-
Chris: Does Schremp start the season at the Bridge or with the Isles?
-
Tell him that he has 10-15 games to prove that he belongs in the NHL and see how he responds. If he starts showing attitude Gordo should go Rex Ryan on him
-
Matt Lashoff would be a great pickup. Get him to compete for the 6th/7th D spot – which, for this team, will certainly include lots of top 6 minutes – and let deHaan go back to juniors. Talented kid, just lost out on a numbers game after TB brought in every Dman they could find this summer (including Hedman). Here’s one of your guys, Scotty, now go get him.
-
Moose/39 – heh, thanks. Amend that to say “somewhere in Canada…”
And you know, I really do hope this works out for Rob Schremp and the Isles. If nothing else someone can make up a jersey with his number and “Detlef” across the top…
-
This is a very good move by Snow! No risk, alot of potential!
…Stop with the Tambo hating already! the guy is an Islander! his father was an Islander and WON the cup here! hopefully Tambo jr can do the same one day! and that reminds me…WHY ISNT ERIC NYSTROM ON THE ISLANDERS!!! HE IS THE SON OF MR. ISLANDER!!! AND HE NATURALLY PLAYS THE OVERSPEED STYLE!!!
-
Love the move, Dont know full story on Robbie, i just know he has incredible moves. he did really well his first year in AHL. seems maybe he needed a change of scenary.
Would love to see him light it up. What suprises me is he was up in edmonton for four games last season and had 3 assists. that kind of production would put him first in isles scoring. LOL>
-
Tambo is a Piker! Not an Islander!
-
Does anyone know if the game will be on TV or streamed on the web?? Good pickup by Snow…
-
Lashoff and/or Jones would definitely improve our D. Maybe replace Meyer in the lineup and add some more size. If we can’t be big upfront, we might as well be big on the back end.
-
not a bad player at all, he has skill.
-
i’m amazed at all the pessimism with this pickup. i thought everyone would be in favor of this. it’s another young guy who has a chance to prove himself. you can never get enough of them. at the very least, they dump him, but at least it gives the opportunity for those that still havent been able to prove themselves a nice big wakeup call.
-
Lots of upside. Crazy talent.no brainer. Knock is skating and grit. Odds are he is more justin papineau than kris versteeg. But its a pity if moulson gets sent down.
-
its pretty simple ny711, as long as moulson keeps producing trust me he wont get sent down.
As far as people being negative about Schrempf pick. its b/c given how tough its been alot of isles fans are negative nancies. its ok. its an all upside pickup. its like getting another #1 pick for nothing.
-
Can’t be any worse than what we already have, so I’m all for it.
-
#101 “knock is skating and grit” !!! That’s like saying eat at such and such restaurant “It’s great except for the food and service” I hope we didn’t lose our shot at Lashoff because of this casino gamble on Schremp.
-
http://www.atdhe.net/index.html is carrying it
-
Anyone know if tonite’s game is televised?
-
“Especially with Frans Nielsen out, this is a worthwhile, cheap pickup for the Islanders.”
The key word is CHEAP. He fits NYI’s payroll and M.O. ya know cause they’re CHEAP.
-
Isles should now get lashoff!!!
-
Heineken, today is the 29th. LOL
-
Stoked on the pick-up. Good move by Garth even if it does not work out b/c we don’t lose anything.
-
Love the move Garth! This kid has first round talent, offensive talent that this team is sorely in need of. As far as Lashoff goes, the Isles get the first shot at every player that goes on waivers because they finished 30th last year. This is, in my opinion, the first of several moves Garth makes to improve the depth of talent in the organization. Some may work, some won’t, but lets take advantage of the opportunity to add whatever we can, maybe even some toughness!
-
I just read that Dan Hamhuis is going to be an unrestricted free agent next year. We need to sign him next summer.
-
does anyone know if the game is being streamed on any link?
-
Another smallish foward … another scrap off the NHL heap …
… and the Isles develop their players better than Edmonton can? We know this because?
Schremp is listed on Hockey’s Futures as 14th on the Edmonton prospect depth chart… he’s also listed as a LW. I forgot about Schremp about 3 years ago when Robert Nilsson and him tore it up in the AHL …
Now I see that he had a severe knee injury 2 years ago… Hey … why not … join the club … might as well import our damaged goods.
Seriously … if Rob Scremp can get it together he can be a lethal steal for the Isles … I certainly do hope that is the case. I’m not holding my breath though.
-
There’s one highlight reel on Youtube that pretty much tells the story of why the OHL point leader was drafted 25th in 2004.
Dude can’t skate. All his goals are from inside 15 feet and UNCHECKED.
I’m not saying it’s a bad pick-up, I’m just saying… BIG DEAL.
As long as Snow doesn’t do something stupid like trade Nielsen I’m okay with it. Not only that, the Isles should use his acquisition wisely with promotions and headlines like:
Schremp Fest! Free gumbo at Popeye’s when Robbie scores two goals… in a month.
Schremp Cocktail… Any ingredients work, as long as there is plenty of ice.
Schremp Stew… When Robbie gets booed and sulks off the ice berating fans.
Schremp Fra Diablo… This is when robbie takes his first shoot out attempt by lifting the puck with his stick and carrying it ala a lacross player.
Schremp Po Boy… what they will be calling him in the AHL in November.
Schremp on the barbie… If a Avery introduces him to one of his model friends. -
Last year we got Thompson off waivers. At least Schremp cant be any worse than Thompson
-
19 ISLE – Schremp had 76pts (53 assists) in the AHL the season following his MCL surgery, so I don’t think health is an issue. At 5’11″ and 200lbs, he’s a pretty solid smallish player (Tamby is 5’11″/186). Let’s see what he can do with the change of scenery. It really is one of those low-risk gambles.
-
I feel sorry for the two guys that play with him at MSG. They will unaffectionately be known as Bubba and Gump of the BUBBA GUMP SCHREMP LINE.
-
And, my 3rd and final comment. I still don’t get the hate-on for Thompson. The guy is a 4th line centre. That’s his role and he does pretty good at it. And he had I think the 2nd best face-off pct on the team last year, and that was while missing almost half the season. I’ll see what he does this year, on the 4th line, before passing final judgement.
-
I’m not saying he’s a can’t-miss kid but what were Oilers fans basing the ‘bust’ label on? The near-point per game scoring total in 07-08 in the AHL? Or the whopping 7 NHL games the Oilers have had him up for in 4 seasons?
At least with Tamby, he’s been in the league a lot longer and has had much longer looks to warrant whispers of being a bust. Low risk, high potential reward, and very consistent with our going young aesthetic. Thinking he could complement JT and/or KO very nicely if he pans out.
-
Any chance he plays tonight?
-
I thought this game was on tonite….
-
Just another pin for the bowling balls
-
Lets hope John Tavares and a change of scenery are the cure. Isle’s may not be the most talented team but they have excellent leadership and character on their team. Maybe Doug Weight and others will rub off. Like Chris said, its a wake up call. It can’t hurt. Schremp has tons of talent. Not a high risk. Why not!
-
Low risk high reward, and for a one year contract, why not?
-
Can’t be any worse then Nate Thompson!
Good Move. -
what radio station?
-
Why is this game not on tv? Devs and Isles.
-
Come on now BVV- why would any of the MSG network channels show two of their alleged ‘home’ teams when there is British soccer to rebroadcast to Americans?
-
Not on TV?
-
Its being streamed on wfan.com, there is a link on top of page highlighted in yellow
-
No TV
go to the Isles Website for the CBS AM Radio link. -
Looks like it. Neither team could get this on that god-awful msg?
Makes NO sense. And why can’t we at least watch it online?
-
Boooooooooooo
-
I guess Reich is not making the team…
-
This is terrible coverage….lol.
-
Another man down…
CB, do you see Schremp dressing on Saturday night?
-
…..listening and surfin PB. WHile English premier soccer is broadcast on MSG+.
Priceless…….. -
I think we should all write a letter to MSG. Why can’t they broadcast the preseason? It’s annoying listening to it on the radio.
And Robbie Schremp is a good pick up. Lots of skill, but as CB said, p*ss poor attitude. Always thought of a “me first” mindset since his draft year. I hope the change of scenery can work to our benefit.. because he is a talented kid.
-
Give the KID a chance. He’s young and amazingly skilled. How many guys like that do we have? Remember Jason Blake? He was thrown away too. Reich broke his wrist . Franz is hurt . This kid can play with JT and if they click then what a steal.
-
hey, Calgary gave up on Brett Hull… Why not, you never know… AND more importantly, you can’t lose… hopefully, this is his wake-up call
-
All those claiming Schremp is too small @ 5’11″ 200, Crosby is the exact same size and doesn’t seem to have a problem with it.
-
The boy simply has INCREDIBLE hand-eye coordination and puckhandling skills. If he has anything else – and you need much more to be an impact NHLer – we shall soon find out.
The question is, would we have been better served taking another Dman since a number of goodins are gonna be on the waiver wire? One boy I’d been hoping for was Lashoff and I believe Tampa DID put him on the wire. As far as I know, we’re still permitted to take players, but not until the rest of the league has had their shot, or am I wrong about that?
-
i absolutely love this move! this guy had like 140 points in 50 something games in the OHL back in 2005-2006. with this high speed offensive system that gordon has going, i think he could easily fit in, given that he proves himself. if this guy can produce like he can, then this was the steal of a century for the isles.
-
This kid is an absolute headcase. Read his interview with hockeys future. Threw around the f bomb like it’s the word the. You can have skill and never receive or deserve a chance in the show because you are not a professional. Get a tough guy to protect your real young assets

when i heard he was put on waviers i had a feeling we would take him I dont no much about him but it cant hurt to pick him up
