ISLANDERS PUTTING ON THE FOIL
Dress rugged roster for rematch tonight vs. Flames

by admin on September 19th, 2009 at 10:31 am

10:30 am - Via Newsday, the Islanders say they do not want one-dimensional hockey players. (They didn’t have a 20-goal scorer last season. Where are we drawing the line on dimensions?). However, according to the official team site, the following will face Calgary tonight: Joel Rechlicz, Micheal Haley, Matt Martin, Jeremy Reich, Nate Thompson and Tim Jackman. John Tavares is not playing.

Way to go Gordo! Lets show the league we have some bite.

  2. avatar Kevin27nyi says:

    I soooo called this

  3. avatar Adam says:

This is all for naught. We are dressing fighters to fight who? Phaneuf is solely responsible for what happened, and he won’t even play. So we are gonna start a few fights against his teammates?
Listen, I thought the hit was clean from a tactical point of view, but had some dirtiness considering it was preseason and okposo already had two guys on him. However, why is it that everytime there is a big hit that is clean, the guy gets jumped? It is really ruining hockey. I just watched a top ten highlight of scott stevens’ biggest hits. There is not one instance on any of the hits I saw when play stopped and a fight ensued. The guys need to respect that just because your guy got walloped, doesn’t mean a penalty occurred.

  4. avatar 25yearfan says:

I guess I’m OK with this and the ultimate 5-2 or so score as long as the other players don’t wind up at more risk from playing shorthanded half the game. Not going to be a banner night for NYI.

  5. avatar Brother Rat says:

Flash, good: don’t let them touch another one of our players that way. I know Morency’s a bubble rookie who was trying to do the right thing and protect his mates, but I hope the Isles bring him up at some point (ack, but hopefully not due to someone else’s injury) so he could get a deserved ovation by the Coliseum crowd.

Very well-written article by the Calgary guy, very balanced. CB, how come you don’t use little flourishes like “tipping the Toledoes?” I had to look that one up.

  6. avatar ItsGoodToBeRich says:

Good stuff. Let’s throw around some of their core players, if their coaching staff decides to play any of them.

Sutter is a prick, so he deserves to face the lineup we have tonight.

  7. avatar Fred says:

Well, it’s pre-season and no points in the standings, but a point to be earned with the league is here for the taking. We must make the point that if you take liberties you will pay the price. Our division is so much tougher this year, it’s good to start sending messages now.

  8. avatar kevin fitz says:

Great title to this blog. haha

    The machine took my quarter!

  9. avatar triz says:

03/25/10 sign me for a day like Al and I’ll take care of business.

  10. avatar enforcer needed! says:

I wouldnt mind this to be opening night roster. Well maybe I would.. But this looks great. I cant wait!!!

  11. avatar isles3113 says:

    That-a-boy Gordy!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. avatar kevin27NYI says:

you might want to include westgarth to the list you have there.

  13. avatar drew says:

tonight is a statement game. simple as that, folks.

the isles must go out and prove to the NHL that they are tough and will stand up for one another no matter who, what, where or when. if hits will be borderline dirty, that’s fine. if blood must be drawn, then blood must be drawn.

folks, dion phaneuf took away any insignificance there might have been in these games. this game is no longer just a preseason game – it’s a character builder. scott gordon’s lineup (all physical, no tavares) proves he knows the deal.

  14. avatar Steven says:

I like this lineup for tonight’s game. I still think tough guys should be able to do more than just fight. I’m not expecting 50 goals but they should be able to at least play decent defense so they are not a total liability.

  15. avatar isles3113 says:

did anyone look at calgary’s lineup??… NOT ONE named player on their lineup for tonight… Sutter’s scared sht and he shuld be!!!…. Now i can’t wait for that game in march… i just hope we have a couple of enforcers up for that game, including dipietro lol

  16. avatar Madchef says:

wow is this game on the isles website??

  17. avatar BSTFan18 says:

#12, If you can’t find the game online at least the fights will be on youtube…

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pascal suspended 1 game after tonight’s game.

  18. avatar butch91 says:

does anyone know if there is any way to watch this game tonight?

  19. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

It’s on like donkey kong! Way to go flash. Go get ‘em boys!!

  20. avatar 19404ever says:

Turn the “wrecker loose tonight! Any way we can slip Mick and the “bomber” in tonight’s line up on a one game deals?

  21. avatar Zteller says:

possibly on streamingan.net they have it listed so lets hope it will work come 9PM

  22. avatar AL L says:

Hey #5,lets not go pissing on a key member of the Dynasty core. He and brother Duane are personalities we loved when here. That said,he may get his comeupins tonight. It would be nice to add some toughness to this group. Matt Martin will be a prized addition here and ,who knows, may even make the squad. Haley looks like a tough SOB. If he could only play some hockey!!

  23. avatar StevieL says:

Not exactly the “Broad Street Bullies” are we! Now consider that Thompson and Jackman ( Rechlicz maybe?)will probably be the only ones that make the team and you wonder what happens during the regular season!

  24. avatar beatlebailey says:

c’mon boys…show them we are not gonna take it anymore!!!…somebody should jump the bench and hit sutter in the mouth!!!

  25. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Oh, and check out the Flamers website with their article about the hit. “Dion Phaneuf changes the game with a skull rattling hit on Kyle Okposo.” Are they f’n serious?? What class by the entire POS organization. Hey Mr. Sutter, when your lil boy was on the ice did Doug Weight and the rest of the Isles organization patronize the incident? It is a shame you ever wore the crest on your chest. You disgust me you POS!

  26. avatar manhattanIslander says:

Good read and i’m glad someone from the Calgary press is telling another side of the story to the Calgary fans. The only issue I had is the bit about “Okposo must know he shouldn’t have been ducking down”. It was my impression that he was already shoved and was off balance.

  27. avatar Bryan says:

why are they not playing JT?

  28. avatar Staten Islander says:

too bad they let mitch fritz go. I’m liking this. Chicago rules, you send one of ours to the hospital, we send one of yours to the morgue

  29. avatar vukota says:

They’re not playing JT because it’s going to get ugly tonight. Real ugly!!!

  30. avatar Mike from Oceanside says:

Just HAS to placed here with regard to CB’s title (with apologies to Nancy Dowd & CB)…

Rechlicz: The I’d like the folks to come down and watch us cream them punks from Calgary.

CB: Anything new on the building of the Lighthouse?

Rechlicz: I think the negotiations are… you know, goin’ pretty good. I have a personal announcement, though. I am placing a personal bounty on the head of Dion Phaneuf. He’s the assistant captain and chief punk on that Calgary team.

    CB: A bounty?

Rechlicz: Yeah. A hundred bucks of my own money for the first of my men that nails that creep. That’s eight o’clock at the Credit Union Centre, Calgary and the all-new New York Islanders.

  31. avatar orngfan says:

yeah who cares how ugly it gets dion phaneuf isn’t even playing. lets just headhunt some of their guys i guess try to make it 1-1 on the dirty hit scale.

  32. avatar Staten Islander says:

Mike….BRILLIANT! I have to clean my screen because i just spit coffee at it

  33. avatar Marc says:

The nyi site also lists the Flames’ roster for tonight. How many of their players are even candidates for opening night? Onto more important things… injury updates on Okposo, Weight and Bergenheim? Let’s not start the days until the next draft lottery just yet!

  34. avatar Leviticus says:

I think CB’s comment that the Isles have spoken through the ‘voice of newsday’ is insulting to Katie, uncalled for and without any obvious merit….someone else might actually have a different opinion than CB

  35. avatar Tavares says:

What is with not playing Tavares again?

  36. avatar LIMBAUGH2012 says:

    HALEY LET LOOSE !!!!

  37. avatar rob says:

They wont be able to duck us March 25th. We wont forget and we will be waiting. I think everyone of us circled that game on the schedule. Im going to it. Lets get the chicken dance ready along with “Diane” chants for the 6-3 215 pound gutless puke who wouldnt fight and dodged the next game.

Tonight is just going to be a bunch youngsters beating the crap out of each other. We want revenge? Look for #6, Adam Pardy. That is the best target. He is there 6th dman but a good young one. Like Okposo, coming off a great rookie year. Maybe its his turn to get smoked with a hit. That will send a message back.

  38. avatar Jeff Kuntz says:

It’s also possible that rather than icing a line-up to fight with the Flames, they’re using this exhibition game for the purpose evaluating some of our “tougher” players to see what role they can play through the season.

We’re running out of exhibition games and cuts are going to have to start being made. Soon. So why not throw down the gauntlet to this group of players and see who emerges?

  39. avatar the1gwiz says:

Oh boy. There’s only one sound I hear in my head when looking at this lineup and thinking of this game tonight: GOOOOONNNG

  40. avatar Steven says:

I have to say 34 CB has been very negative regarding anything the Isles do lately. My idea of tough guys are Clark Gillies and Bobby Nystrom not Mitch Fritz. I do not want a guy that can only play 3 minutes and fight another goon. I believe Fritz was around and Frans was still given that cheap shot.

  41. avatar isles99 says:

my thoughts on this whole issue:
a-okposo was off balabce when giordano pushed him into phaneuf so i don’t know wh yppl say okposo had his head down
b-it does’t matter if the hit was legal or not, this is hockey. we have to send a CLEAR message. if dion isnt playing tonight, we still have to send the message regardless.
c- if dion isnt playing tonight, we have to keep his number in mind when the flames visit the colesium
d-you dont run our best forward and not get pay your dues for it.

  42. avatar Steve says:

Great job, Scott. Hopefully that pussy Dion dresses and gets his ass handed to him.

  43. avatar duff says:

whatever. the flames are dressing all they’re scrubs anyway, so this is meaningless.

  44. avatar Doug says:

Who cares if the Flames dressed their nobody’s, hit everything that moves and maybe shoot a puck at shitface Sutter’s mouth. Send him back to the farm and his tractors.

  45. avatar CJCB says:

Yawn, just like last year the Islanders will dress a TOUGH lineup during preseason only to forget 100% that they exist during the regular season. The whole we dont want a 1 dimensional player is getting SO old, what is Thompson a 1 dimensional face off player, Gervais what dimension does he fit, he cant score, the list goes on and on with the Islanders. Why do they continue to use these LAME excuses? The WHOLE team is compromised of 1 dimensional players. But since they have won a whole lot in the last 20 years i guess they think we should believe them!!

  46. avatar Leviticus says:

    I fully agree #40….

  47. avatar Isle4Ever says:

#34 Put Tavares on the ice after thursday, I dont think so. Gutless move on celine Dione’s part. This is pre-season I know everyone is saying “what? tell outr players to turn it down for preseason?” well, guess what maybe in the preseason thses guys should take the responsibilty for themselves. There is still a code in the NHl and it says, you don’t take out the teams best players head down or not especially in pre-season. just looks like to me a vicous attempt to hurt a young guy because your down 3-1. The Flames are just a bunch of babies. And the Sutter thing, I saw the hit Weight had on little Sutter and that was a clean hit, his head was down reaching for the puck, Weight never left his feet and at least Sutter wasn’t carried off in a DAMN STRETCHER! Abolutley appauling what is going on latley. it wasn’t just that game but the Flyers too giving cheap shots during pre-season, what for?
This game honestly won’t matter, Sutter obviously won’t put any player on the ice of some value now. But a message should be sent. But don’t be surprised in March when the Isles don’t do anything to Dione, Motteau never recieved any retribution for his hit. These guys need to wake up. the next to get his head taken off could be Tavares and there goes the rebuilding plan.

  48. avatar Steven says:

Thanks 46. This talk about an enforcer is another excuse to pile on the Isles. They Isles have had plenty of enforcers over the years and it never stopped the Patty L Pecca and Frans injuries or the Back injury Mike Bossy suffered at the hands of Tiger Williams. There has been a lot of arm chair QB’s on this site. They should get together and buy the Team from Charles Wang if they think they can do better.

  49. avatar tond24 says:

i know there are some fighters there but only prob is non of these guys can fight…ok the wrecker can

  50. avatar GD says:

so the flames play scaredy cat and wimp out again by not playing 1 true regular in tonights game.. way to add fuel to the 3-25 game that will be the day we blow their playoff dreams away with 1 big punishment

  51. avatar Ethan K says:

This is gonna be embarrassing for the Islanders tonight. I agree with making the team tougher for the game, but none of these guys can really win a fight, with the exception of Rechlicz. And on top of losing fights, they’re gonna lose the game. Let Tavares play, he’s gotta learn to deal with being a target, which is what he’s gonna be all season.

  52. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

I like the line-up for tonight…..too bad the game isn’t televised.

  53. avatar Chris TMC says:

rob (37): You’ll have to scream the tune out yourself because we as fans are not allowed to hear the chicken dance anymore. I believe it may have been an agreement between Dolan and Wang.

    (52) I certainly hope not- team toughness sure and I like the lineup fine but if the Isles were acting like that it would just be sad.

  54. avatar UIF says:

I remember people saying good things about Haley. For you people that watch B-port, what’s the story with him?

  55. avatar Alex says:

“They didn’t have a 20-goal scorer last season. Where are we drawing the line on dimensions?”

That’s gotta be the line of the year CB!

  56. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Isn’t this fun CB??? Personally… and I mentioned this on Katie’s blog … I think it’s too late to exact revenge… and ill advised. If Dion was in the lineup all we’d need is Matt Martin, the Wrecker and Reich to get the job done… a veritable enforcer hat trick if you will. I’d rather see the Isles light up the score board for once instead of ringing some Calgary player’s bell who had nothing to do with the hit on KO. Save it for the regular season.

  57. avatar hud says:

This game and these lineups are a waste of time.

  58. avatar Bri on Li says:

But think about it. We’ve been complaining about getting a tough guy in the lineup, and this gives us a great chance for open auditions. Whoever has the best fight gets to play enforcer. bring it!

  59. avatar KO21 says:

I believe this will bring the guys closer together…It should be an experience which causes them to want to stick up for each other…I hope so

  60. avatar a REAL hockey fan says:

    >>> Its a Preseason game and im VERY VERY happy that the Isles are showing the league they are not going to be pushed around – not to insult anyone, but you “pacifist types’ have to wake up, hockey is a game of skill, speed and yes SOME BRAWN!

___ like or hate it the Isles are a young team and a smallish team – they are growing and building, if they lose and get also get pushed around and manhandled i wont take it or like it! If they lose but show some heart, some passion, and some desire i could live with it a lil (as long as they r progressing) — I dont want them to lose AND get pushed around!

___ Dont laugh but i just put on the TV and Youngblood (the hockey movie) is on Encore – HAHAHAHA

  61. avatar Tim F. says:

“Where are we drawing the line on dimensions?”

    LOL – Great line, CB.

  62. avatar Tim F. says:

And I typed that before I saw the comment from Alex (#55).

  63. avatar chad says:

michael haley is 5’10 200 pound heat seeking missle who will hit and fight ANYBODY, no matter how big they are. he’ll beat any middleweight out there, some heavywheights, and if he doesnt beat a heavyweight, he’ll at least give them a hellacious battle

if you want to see how good this guy is fighting, you tube and watch some of his fights. and he can play some too

  64. avatar justin says:

#51 ethan wow are you way off?

  65. avatar Islebethere4u says:

When a player like Pheneuf is qouted as saying that hits (like the one on Okposo and others) “need to be part of his game to be effective” the NHL should take notice. How many other players today have subjected their opponents to as many career threatening head injuries or concussions as Dion Pheneuf?!! Not many I imagine.
