KATE MURRAY’S OPEN LIGHTHOUSE RESPONSE
Gallof has the exclusive on letter to Long Islanders
B.D. Gallof reveals a letter from the Town of Hempstead open letter to the public regarding the Lighthouse Project. (How old-fashioned, and yet, so sweet). I learned of B.D.’s post from a tweet, funny enough, by the Lighthouse staff. Comments. Please also show your support to B.D.’s site for the scoop.

I have to say that the “demands” seem pretty reasonable and if the Lighthouse accepts them – looks like we are all systems go.
What am I missing here?
-
Sheds some new light on the whole damn thing doesn’t it…?
Can’t say I see a problem with it.

The devil will be in the details. There are reasonable requests here, but they could also be turned into game changing road blocks. This still has to play out.
I guess a few people owe you an apology, CB. Seems to me that your article the other day was on the money.
-
Looks to me like the requirements from Kate Murray are very reasonable.
Agree with # 2, what am I missing ?
-
The only real problem with the (what I agree are) reasonable demands is the timing of them. These demands could have been expressed months if not years a go.
-
Seems reasonable to me.
What I get out of it is this: The town is making sure to cover its a$$ and that Wang sticks to his promises before they go ahead and approve the project.
If anything at all, I think this is all positive stuff. -
I don’t have a problem with the letter. The “requests” actually do seem reasonable to me. What I don’t fully understand is if these are new requests, why are they new? These should have been made clear and been addressed from the beginning. We all agree that the LHP needs to get done yesterday, but the only ones who really know about the actual timeline of events from Day One are the principles involved … Wang and associates and Kate Murray and TOH. What I am getting tired of is all the BS back and forth crap! For Pete’s sake everyone involved be forthright and GET THIS DONE!
-
I wonder what Murray was referring to in No.6 about ” other requests” on the Lighthouse lease ?
-
i see no reason why Wang wouldnt agree to all. Its in the best interest of the fans to get the Isles locked in here and for the Coliseum to be renovated first.
-
Go Kate she is just dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s….not like Suzzi..
-
Seems to me these are all very reasonable demands. If Wang really want’s to get this done all he has to do is say O.K. and it looks like the TOH will approve the project as is. Sounds too easy but am I missing something.
-
Read Gallof’s interview with the TofH source. There is other stuff going on… Not as simple as ‘the letter seems reasonable to me.’ this may be the end game, but some serious obstacles remain.
-
Kate Murray should have written this letter of explanation a long time ago.
-
This letter is extremely reasonable. What is the problem here? Wang should meet these requests and put the ball back in Murray’s court. Not sure why Wang or Suozzi would be upset or frustrated by this letter. Seems innocent to me.
-
I think at this point if the Lighthouse project doesn’t go through it would be career suicide for Murray and a big black mark on Long Island if the Coliseum remains in its current condition and the Isles leave.
I just think Murray wants to look like the good guy getting this project through and makes sure Wang doesn’t pull any funny business.
I think Wang needs to put his ego aside here and play ball and this process will happen quicker. Hey, it might even help her win re-election if she is shed in a good light by residents.
-
I feel like there is more than meets the eye with this. If this was really all she was asking I feel Wang and company would have just already done it. Something tells me there is more to this story being left out.
-
All this back-and-forth over the October 3 deadline, Lighthouse “he-said she-said,” and government blah-dee-blah is truly distracting. Let’s just play some darn hockey already!!
-
Levi You are right there is more then its letting us know BUT, also in that same blog BD seems to think its reasonable.
-
It actually sounds reasonable. He SHOULD enter into the lease first, especially since they claim it’s 99 percent done. I’m not Kate Murray’s biggest supporter, but she seems to be looking out for the town’s interests here and the residents can’t complain about that. Now that I’ve weighed in from my Bahamas timeshare, I’m going for rum!
-
Seems reasonable to me. What am I missing??? MAKE THE DEAL!!!!!
-
Obviously Wang doesn’t see Murray’s 10 demands as reasonable because he is angry. My guess is the tax abatement stuff which is pretty standard in condo deals for the first ten years at least in NYC. In any case they should be negoiable. He probably need that clause to sell the big bunch of condos he is planning. I think what people are missing is the that incentive sells apts. but the cash goes to the buyer of the apt. not the developer.
-
Dont you guys see the big picture? Theres no way the LH is approved before the election. To do so would give Suozzi an election year victory and Murray/Mondello wont let that happen. The Repubs smell blood in the water w/ high taxes and Obamas growing unpopularity and think they might be able to beat Suozzi, so since hes connected with the LH there will be no approval before November 4.
-
ps to my #22 comment. Even the developers’ of ground zero get tax incentives. Enough said.
-
A day late and a dollar short. No explanation as to why these issues have not been brought up earlier.
Murray tries to deflect the issue of why she waited to bring these issues up by mentioning that she didn’t have the project for the entire 8 years. True, but she has had it for at least 2 years. During that time, not once did she raise these issues??? Nice try, but a lame response from a low-rent novice politician.
Go Kate? I agree! Far away!
-
This is so intriguing. Now I want to go to the meeting and see what happens. I want to see which side starts playing with their phones.
-
And hear the questions obviously.
-
Allow me to be the first…re:27, willis…whachu talkin bout?
NJA
The repubs are basically conceding the election to suozzi. 95 percent of LIers probably wouldn’t be able to name the repub nominee (count me in that number). They have done zero publicity. In addition, tying the lighthouse to obama’s popularity? That is one of the all-time reaches!
-
there is more to this then what she said for public consumption
-
As I said in the last LH blog. This is posturing! Kate and the Repubs will not go out on there own and derail this, especially with all of the public and higher political support shown for it. But what they will do is clutch, and massage it and F*#@ it for as long as they can so they come out to look like it was there baby and they were sooooo diligent in the process.
One of two things will be the trigger here. Either Wang announcing that he is in serious talks with KC (not Queens, as it is not realistic and Kate would be able to find whether he is bluffing or not) or after the election.
In any event the Repub party will try to credit for the LH passing any way shape or form that they can. -
Shoe – My comment had nothing at all to do with Dems vs Repubs. I simply read a few of BD’s blog posts and it all makes me curious to see what happens at the meeting on the 22nd. Of course there’s posturing, that’s a given. I still want to see this in person.
And you’re the 2nd so far to say that here. No sweat, that’s why I picked the name.
-
you know I am no Kate Murray fan, and these things she’s asking for she should have asked for months ago. however, I don’t really see what is so bad about her asking to put Wangs promises in writing.
Hell, I want it in writing that NVMC will be the first thing they develop. I want it in writing that he’ll keep the NYI here on LI. I want it in writing that he’s going to use local union workers & contractors to build this project.
Charles has been so incredibly patient, that he should just give her all these things that she wants. A move like this will go a long way towards helping get this project approved & a shovel in the ground.
-
Shoe: I think you underestimate the notion that Suozzi’s connection to the Lighhouse has made it an election year issue. Why would Mondello give Suozzi a bump before an election even if he thinks Mangano will lose? Its bad for party morale. Kate is doing what her bosses want- trying to kick Suozzi in the shins before an election.
And I agree that Obama is starting to hurt Democrats nationally, especially in middle class white suburbia. This should have some translation to the local level, particularly in a traditionally conservative area like Nassau.

Man I look at the Penguins and I am so Jealous. WE NEED TO GET THIS THING DONEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

so does this mean that Kate’s demands will b met by the 22nd? If so… good for the lighthouse group… Kate keeps hitting them with more crap that LHG gets it done under pressure and in a timely fashion… these people deserve a round of applause!
