LUKE SELLARS, PARRISH AND OTHER SILLI STORIES
Believe me, I wish I had better stuff to deliver
While we await the news of any NHL-level training camp invites by the Islanders, I can forward an email from Ottawa today that defenseman/fighter and former Thrash prospect Luke Sellers has been invited to Bridgeport training camp. No confirmation whether he has accepted.
Luke – big PIMs in junior and the AHL – has bounced around Europe the last few years. He would have to come to Sound Tigers camp for the opportunity to answer some questions about his character. There was a time when the former Atlanta second round pick was thought to have stones and ability. He also could be a good opponent for the Wrecker if the two squads ever meet. (Yup, a blog entry about a never-been maybe going to an AHL camp. Got it).
While I await the fulfillment of more interview requests – my Biron and Okposo Q & As became part of a weekly series instead of the daily I hoped for – here’s a story I told Puck Daddy for his tribute to Mike Sillinger.
While we await the news of some former Islander being invited to training camp, here’s a reminder that I predicted Mark Parrish a while ago. Let me reiterate that I really like Mark, but I don’t see the point in having him, Miro Satan, Chow, Ken Belanger, Ari Haanpaa or anyone else back. If the Islanders want to stick to this slow rebuild, they should go for it.
Wish I had more to report. Hopefully others do.
Comments.

So, when exactly does camp get underway? In the Okposo article, he mentioned he’ll be going to Iceworks on Thursday, but I thought Isles camp was in Saskatoon?
Any chance of Paul Kruse being the former Islander invitee?
-
Ari Haanpaa? hahahahahahaha What is ole’ number 25 up to these days?
-
The Ari Haanpaa reference just made me spit water all over the monitor. Classic!
-
If Ari Haanpaa gets an invite, there better be one going out to Ken Leiter too
-
Bates? Yashin?
Are the Isles seriously going to invite a former player to camp?
Howatt? Lewis? D. Sutter? Gillies? I’ll take them over Bates or Yashin.
-
We need a enforcer!!! I think we have room on the roster for 1 guy. Thompson goes to minors.
-
Please let’s sign someone who can fight, an enforcer, who can play 4-8 minutes a game. Please! It’ll change the season around.
-
CB, I see you’ve been visiting IM a bit.
And speaking of Chow, any more stories about The Pride of Poland?BTW, good job at Fanhouse. It’s funny how those stories like the Higgins one used to center around the Rag$. Now you can give a Blue and Orange perspective. Nice work.

I couldn’t find any video on Sellars or Sellers whatever is the proper spelling, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Look unless Cairns or Vukota are coming out of retirement let’s please skip the past his prime (Snow think’s it’s a feel good story) brining back a former player. I couldn’t wait for Parrish to be traded. I don’t want Satan or anyone else either. It would by hypocritical of Snow to not make a trade or sign a UFA (not that there were any I wanted other then Orr at FWD) and then bring in some has been/never was because they’d “be taking valuable ice time away” from the young players and not adding much. I guess it’s no more hypocritical then talking all last year about how he understands the need to get bigger and tougher all over the organization and improve the defense on the Isles roster and he has done none of it.
-
I hope Jesse Joensuu or even Robin Figren makes the team out of camp and I hope the rebuild continues.
-
memo to snow: stick to YOUR plan. mark parrish does not fit with the isles in any capacity……this would be a retarted moved. we already have mentors on our team….snow bi**hed earlier that veterans would take playing time away from kids….well the parrish signing would show how much of a hypocrite he would be…so what if we suck again this year….it would be another learning yr for our prospects and we would get another elite prospect to our pool…then we can hit free agency from that point…dont ruin a good thing snow.
-
As for Parrish, I could take him or leave him. But if the coach and GM think he can advance the development of young guys by providing additional guidance on and off the ice, it wouldn’t bother me.
During our first “rebuild” didn’t we have guys like Jeep, Jude Drouin, Bert Marshall, Gerry Hart, etc.? You need good character, “hold the fort guys” while you build. You can’t have all young guys overnight.
-
I believe Janakowski spotted Hector Marini at Village Hero the other day….so maybe that will be the invite….or Richard Kron.
-
Strummer’s Army, I thought about your last sentence and I tend to agree.
But I’ll tell you what is bothering me more right now. Theoretically by the 11/12 season the team “should be” contending for real. And that’s the year there may be a lock out. What the heck is that going to do to us. UGH.
At least we know we’re solid in goal now, and we can all watch how Snow handles the rebuild. And enjoy hockey while it happens. This lockout is a big bad unknown that could derail the whole thing IMO.
-
That would be a good story. What are Ari Haanpaa & Miko Makala doing now. (Derek King & Brad Delgarno) (Tom Fitzgerald & Brad Lauer) You get the point.
-
NHL would be fools to ever have a lockout again, in many ways they’ve never recovered. The game is growing and they have momenteum so to stop that is plain dumb.
I wish CB would have commented on his life of a hockey fan being rough article how aggravating it is the NHL hands jobs to unqualified people because they used to play or coach or having to put up with Colin Campbell’s NHL INjustice.
I looked up this Sellars guy. 6’1″ 205 and about 28 yrs old. Even when Snow throws us a bone he doens’t really. Fritz should be signed for Bridgeport (who has no heavyweight) if he’s available.
Overall it appears Snow has done well drafting, a few key FA’s (doing better now then when he first started)etc. However, he is in some area’s too patient and too slow. It’s great you signed Riechlecz and he’s developing, it’s great you can sign Martin (AND BETTER), it’s great your addressing the need for defense (though not big/mean defense) but those guys are mostly years away. In some ways your going to have to give the team what it needs to survive in the interim.
-
(17) Fritz got a tryout with Phoenix
-
I am standing on ceremony and will never attend a training camp event until Todd Okerlund gets invited back for a tryout!
-
Id take Parrish back. He is a guy who can stand in front of the net and bang in those Streit shots from the point. Id rather have a scorer then Witt in front of the net on the power play. He will come cheap and id rather have him then Tamby. Im sorry Tamby time to go.
-
I would love to see Ken “the Lumberjack” Belanger back. He had a two yr stint on the Isles (before Laus cleaned his clock) where he was unbeatable.
-
Well, I’d do cartwheels over this Luke Sellars and Mark Parrish news, but my back’s been bothering me.
-
I’ll take either Parrish or satan back over nate thomson. They wouldn’t be taking time away from kids just Nate and I’m
just fine with that -
I know CB, you can make up some fake but real exciting story about how the Islanders signed some great free agent which causes TSN and The Sporting News to reference your article as fact and then take it down later that day and put up a story on how Milbury had a glass case in his office with the same shoe that he beat a fan with…the season cannot get here soon enough…
-
…. Ill take any BEEF/SIZE/OOOMPH that the isles can give, there roster is loaded with smallish skating players, they need some beef and muscle on the squad and i dont care where it comes from. Im not looking for a goonsquad but they do need some presence with this young team! Or they will get pushed around and hammered by december!
Whoever brough up that Belanger and Laus fight is partially correct, **True story** Belanger actually suffered a mild concussion in a game a couple days before at the pregame skate at MSG (it figures) and missed the Ranger game – i think he fell awkardly during pre game warmups, he sat out the Ranger game and then came back 2 early against florida before he caught that right hand. He should have SAT out a lil longer. I do give Belanger credit for seeking out Laus and fighting him ASAP when they played again (he did well) True story
Parrish? mehh im on the fence about him, im not sure how much he has left but he does have some scoring touch in front of the net, if he has anything left he might be a ok fit and not cost alot of $$$… Hes 1 guy who actually might be worth a shot…
-
Parrish…..no thanks. All giddy to bolt the islanders for his hometown Minn. Now jobless and he wants back. No thanks. Theres a reason he is jobless.
-
Belanger was a gamer and an absolute animal. Anyone who went near Ziggy knew that Kenny B was on the way over….we need something similar on this team when it comes to JT and KO.
-
Ken Baumgartner….bring him back. Nobody will touch JT, KO or JB.
-
agree with Botta, No need to invite former isles back into lineup.
Isles dont need a goon. Detroit dont have one and Goddard was healthy scratch post allstar break run and stanley cup win.
Goons take up time away from goal scorer.
Rechliez, Jackman, Sutton and Witt should be plenty protection for Tavares. What the isles need is someone like Hunter, Bergie, Tambellini, or Nielson to put up 25+ goals in addition to the 20+ goals i expect from Okposo and Tavares.
thats the only way isles have a shot at making playoffs. not whether we have a enforcer or not.
-
Ari Handpass – Now we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel
I have no problem trying to bring in some more toughness. It will keep the Wrecker on his toes. I do have a problem bringing back our own castaways. No Satan. No Parrish. Blizzard has it right – there is a reason nobody else wants them.
-
So UIF you claim you can do cartwheels over Luke Sellars and Mark Parrish…LOL… These men are strong, serious and don’t have to hide behind bull@##%^ opinions from someone that is spoiled or threated..Sad for you and all of us that LOVE the game. These guys just want to play hockey and people like YOU make it political..That’s why no one really goes!!!If you really were a TEAM player you would welcome the younger guys and mentor them, but I guess they may-be a threat…Sad for all…

Id take Parrish over Satan. At least he isnt soft like Miro
