MORENCY SUSPENDED FOR 10 GAMES
Figren, Koskinen to Bridge; Niemi, Poulin to junior

Fanhouse feature on Nikita Filatov

Four cuts announced by NYI: Figren and Koskinen sent to Bridgeport, Niemi and Poulin returned to juniors. The NHL rules Pascal Morency’s line change to re-arrange Dion Phaneuf was legal, but not his intent to start an altercation. Morency gets ten games. See you at the Lighthouse hearing on Tuesday.

wow that is some mighty smelly BS. really 8 games. If the NHL feels they must give a suspension remainer of preseason and a game or 2. really 8 games. dont be those guys.

  2. 2 beatlebailey

if it was Witt he would have gotten 40 games. Colin Campbell is dumb

  3. 3 Patrick

So unlike the NHL and Colon Campbell to hand down a less than equitable punishment to an Islander player.

  4. 4 derek

    ABSOLUTE BS.

It’s time Garth stands up for his team.

  5. 5 louie dapuck

What a joke. Colon Cambell doesnt even try to mask his disdain for this team. You could never beat us on the ice so you get your revenge 25 years later as a an old man. You can say with a straight face than phanuef didnt leave his feet and then suspend a kid for fighting??? Colon you are still the pussy you were as a Ranger…

  6. 6 Matt

Chris, no disrespect to Katie but your Islander blog when you post is so much better then her blog on newsday.

  7. 7 mfio

There are clearly 2 guys coming to the bench for a change, so its not like it was an illegal line change or was a 6th man on the ice. What about the cutting him off to phaneuf, does he get suspended as a 3rd guy in?

Its really a joke the way the isles are treated around the league

  8. 8 toorude

is that the same amount of games that pronger got for stomping on someone with his skate last year or the year before?

  9. 9 Blizzard

…..just wow. Okposo lays drooling on the ice and the kid gets 8 games because of a LEGAL line change and intent? What the hell was Phaneuf’s intent? Im sick of this crap!!!!

  10. 10 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Hey CB …. Think it’s time to pile up all Colon Campbell’s stack of horrible disciplinary decisions of the last decade? I do. I bet you that you’d find more than half the fans in the league on your side commenting on Fanhouse.

CB- I had over a dozen emails about the incident from colleagues that know I’m an Islander fan that also are hockey fans and every single one of them said Phaneuf made a run at Kyle. Infact one of my colleagues in Toronto pointed out and copy and pasted the rule from NHL’s website that regardless of whether or not KO had his head down, and whether or not he left his skates … That Dion Phaneuf CHARGED Kyle, and for that alone based on the result he deserved a major penalty and game misconduct …

Here is part of the rule

43.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

Charging shall mean the actions of a player or goalkeeper who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.
    …..
There is more to it … I encourage you CB … and others to look it up on NHL’s website … it’s pretty black and white when you hold that rule up against the video of what Dion did … and Colon Campbell should be relieved of his duties immediately for continued ineptitude and gross lack of subjective judgments.

Sorry for the long post CB … I’m still irrate … b/c this is more than just Kyle and bad judgments againt the Isles … such as the Morency suspension … It’s a LONG drawn out history … and Campbell has ALWAYS had a grudge with the organization.

  11. 11 orngfan

of course phaneuf suspended ZERO games for intent to injure. i think garth snow should absolutely call out the league publicly for not punishing dion for intending to injure kyle.

  12. 12 Staten Islander

    typical

  13. 13 Joe in Massapequa

    Wow, just wow…

  14. 14 Jim from Babylon

Who is responsible for Campbell being the discipline czar? By that I mean who appoints or elects/votes him to this position? Campbell clearly has a bias against the Islanders and he isn’t even trying to hide it.

  15. 15 Michael

Nobody noticed what CB did? He crossed out Soundtigers because the Islanders are going to have him on the active roster. Interesting, I wonder where he fits in. Nicely done, Chris.

  16. 16 Daniel

Thats a bit much is it not? Unfortunately it isn’t surprising. I really cannot wait until the Flames come to the coliseum.

  17. 17 Jeff

This is such total B.S. Phaneuf left his feet before he hit Okposo and hit him in the face. Isles need to pay this guy back Big Time when they play in the regular season.

  18. 18 bossjones1

    Absolutely ridiculous.

  19. 19 dp

Can’t make this stuff up. Very unprofessional by Campbell and the NHL. I’m already p.o’d and the season hasn’t even started.

  20. 20 tonti

Such a joke. Crack down on the guy legally changing and defending his teammate, ignore the intent of the player making the hit …. and encourage cheap hits?????? Great job NHL.

  21. 21 thepolishprince

This doesn’t surprise me in the least. I wonder if the team will garner any more respect once it is sold and relocated. Absolute f’in joke.

  22. 22 2Bit

i’m against this as much as the rest of you, but for those that think Phaneuf left his feet before hitting Kyle, you need to get your eyes checked.

I’ll agree he was hunting & deserves some punishment for his actions, but he didn’t leave his feet until impact.

  23. 23 tonti

For the record I think the hit was clean. BUT if you want to be fair and suspend based on intent … I think you need to take a new look at the hit and judge the intent, in a pre-season game.

  24. 24 Isles Fan in Ulster County

If you are going to judge the intent on the line change you must judge the intent of the hit considering that it is a preseason game. Campbell refused to do this which is par for the course when disciplinary actions involve the Islanders. I suspect Garth will accept the suspension because if he cries foul you can bet that the next suspension for an Islander will be even greater for critiquing Herr Campbell.

  25. 25 Thomas32

Its a TOTAL DISGRACE!!!! No punishment for Dion leaving his feet though right , Colin?? I LOVE how your named after such a dirty part of the anatomy!!! Fits you PERFECT!!!

  26. 26 Sumo Goalie

A joke sentence coming from a joke of a man. Soupy you should be fired so please resign and save us all the headaches. You have no idea what the words fair or equal mean. Oh by the way, you’re a joke too, Bettman.

  27. 27 Since72

So what am I missinng here? It was a legal line change and there wasn’t even much of a fight. Actually, since Morency never even got to Phaneuf you could argue that he wasn’t even the instigator in the fight he had. So exactly what is the offense that he has been suspended for.

My understanding is that hockey allowsd fights so that the players can “police” themselves. Exactly what Morency was doing and particularly necessary since the lack of a penalty or suspension against Phaneuf, after he sent a player to the hospital, shows that the only “policing” the league is engaged in is Campbell against the Islanders.

Who assesses his job performance? What a disgrace.

Nice post 19 ISLE in NJ 22.

  28. 28 Since72

And regarding the hit, Phaneuf does not have to be off of his feet at the time of the hit for it to be illegal. If he “Launches” himself,as his increased momentum after the collision shows, it is illegal.

  29. 29 Mikey

The rule (70.2, see below) is absurd and to my knowledge has never been enforced. The NHL does not need to show that Morency legally changed lines with the intention to start a fight; all they need to prove is that he changed lines legally and subsequently started a fight. Under this rule, a player could be disciplined any time he asked an opposing player to fight. In other words, it could be used to ban fighting. Of course, Campbell never enforces this rule b/c it would lead to absurd consequences. However, there is always an exception for the Isles in Soupy’s world. One day this man is going to suspend our star players in a Stanley Cup final and take a cup away from us. Garth needs to stand up for this franchise before it’s too late.

Rule 70.2 Legal Line Change – A player who has entered the game on a legal line change or legally from the penalty bench (penalty time has expired) who starts an altercation maybe subject to discipline in accordance with Rule 29 – Supplementary Discipline.

  30. 30 tonti

If it was morency’s intent to go after phaneuf, how about a third man in (intent) suspension since it was his phaneuf’s teammate’s intent to go after morency? Everything else being legal and all.

  31. 31 Pete M

So this means from now on 8 games is the going rate for intent to start an altercation? Yeah right.

  32. 32 doc

    LUDICROUS!!!

  33. 33 art

If you are discriminated on by the league on a regular basis when you retaliate to qustionable hits than the only answer is to have an enforcer and have big tough players at all positions. This of course would discouage hits like the one on OK. I’m afraid that Snow will not even begin to adress this issue and the result could be a lot of injured players. I hope I’m wrong.

  34. 34 Viper

Stand up for the team, Garth. It is time already.

  35. 35 beatlebailey

Snow won’t provide the team with players who can stand up for their teammates why would we expect him to stand up to the league regarding this joke of a ruling? Snow got slapped and he will take it like a pansy

  36. 36 ars9x

SHEER INSANITY! wow. I mean wtf???? I am beyond pissed and i hope that Garth does something!

CB or anyone….Is there an APPEAL PROCESS??

  37. 37 Schultz39

    agree…….ridiculous

  38. 38 Les Beaver

    This = Joke.

  39. 39 So confused

So let me get this straight, you can hit somebody in the head with the possibility to end their career or cause a life altering injury and that’s ok, but if you leave the bench to beat the crap out of someone that not ok. Got it

Is it any wonder why are children make bad decisions in this world.

  40. 40 Blizzard

This is just unbelievable IMO. How could they justify this? Can we petition the NHL or something? You know damn well if it was Iginla, Crosby, etc..the league would have dropped a heavy suspension with that hit. It just blows my mind. I mean being a homer aside this is just ludicrous.

  41. 41 dose

it’s why so many people still see the nhl as wwf.

  42. 42 David Volek

It does the organization no good for garth snow to criticize colin cambell. Bottom line, Morency left the bench and should have been suspended.

You can argue all you want that Phaneuff should have been suspended but he wasnt. I think the better question, is why he is taking out a player with a hit like that and then not answering for it. Why was Phaneuff allowing his teamates to do his dirty work. You hit a guy like that in pre season, you have to answer for it. If I was his teamate, Id lose respect for him for not answering the call……..NO JAM. You live by the sword, you die by it…..

  43. 43 UIF

Yeah, Morency got jumped by like two different Flames and two linesmen on his way to Phaneuf…how about some disciplinary action on some of the guys who jumped in? Bad decision, but I’m used to it by now.

  44. 44 matt

y are islanders always treated unfairly by the nhl

  45. 45 Jason

    You’ve got to be kidding.

  46. 46 islesfan999

Utter bs. The league has it in for us. 2 suspensions for calgary should have happened and only we get 1… f this

  47. 47 Tony F.

Maybe I need my eyes examined, however I’ll bet if you could see the hit from a few different angles you’d see Dion leaving his feet. I find it hard to believe that collision caused Dion to move in such a vertical direction. As for our friend Colin, I can’t believe he can have such a blatant bias against the Islanders and not be called on it, f***ing joke.

  48. 48 Tom D37

actually the suspension is for 10 games, he already served 2 games, so 8 games is what remains. It’s the same amount of games if he had jumped off the bench without a line change and actually had a fight. BTW, Colton Orr did the same thing last year against the Penguins when he went after Godard for pushing Gomez around. Orr didn’t even receive a game misconduct, let alone a suspension.

  49. 49 John Keitz

Colin Campbell is pathetic. He really has to go!

  50. 50 Bob Bassen

You can’t even make it up. WOW! Intent?!?…Whats next…”I know what you were thinking?” How you can the league celebrate a hit like that but then act as if they have such high standards of nobility?!? The Flames D-Man was 3rd man in for crying out loud! Cambell has such incredible clay feet…completely without dignity!
    But then again;
Bettman is getting his butt handed to him in Phoenix and another work-stoppage is looming so the entire league itself is wobbling.
Perhaps this is all just the charade of Sports in general?
I mean the Planet has such a shortage of NFL QB’s that the NFL had to let Vick back in…
(Michael Vick’s *second chance* was being let out of Jail…not playing NFL football. JMHO)
    I digress…
    Go Isles!

  51. 51 MikeinRichmondVa

It’s not Campbell, it’s the ineptitude of the NHL to not see when an employee is incompetent. It’s a shame that the NHL acts like a bush league, they really have to take some lessons from the NFL to become a professional sports league. Shame, Shame, Shame on Gary Bettman and his subordinates for this injustice.

  52. 52 beatlebailey

hey it could be worse…we could have traded luongo, chara, passed up parise in the 03 draft and named our back up goalie as GM..oh…nevermind…..have to go take a big kvasha now…go isles! go lighthouse!!

  53. 53 geduffer

#15 - CB crossed out Sound Tigers on the original post because the suspension isn’t enforced in the minors. He’s suspended for the next 5 games that he’s on the Islanders roster. I think there was something similar in regards to the Flyers and that moron Steve Downie, either last year or the year before.

  54. 54 Marc

From Newsday is Scott Gordon’s quote about his feeling about today’s suspension: “I was more disappointed that Phanuef didn’t get anything.”

  55. 55 Ryan T.

Oh, no.. 5 regular season games without Morency in the (Bridgeport) lineup.. Whatever shall we do?

I don’t like the hit by Phaneuf either (especially for a preseason game.. I hardly doubt he needs to earn a spot in that lineup), but it’s a rule. The suspension is fair, even if 99% the NHL isn’t to us.. But I don’t see the point of any of us getting so wound up over it.. Our season DEFINITELY DOES NOT depend on Pascal Morency in the lineup for 5 games.

  56. 56 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Yes … Phaneuf left his feet 8 frames of video before impact… that isn’t the main detail. The Charging is.

Wang /Snow’s only course of action is to petition the Governors and Bettman and provide the mountain of evidence that Colon’s justice is way off balance when dealing out discipline to Islanders.

Other than that they’d have to do a very unpopular thing and that is to go to the Federal Goverment and charge the NHL in violation of their anti-trust exemption, which also covers the way the NHL executes its by-laws and rules. This would mean millions in fines and threaten the NHL’s anti-trust exemption status.

So Wang / Snow would become more unpopular in NHL circles, and that doesn’t help the cause either.

  57. 57 mickeyboy7

This is a league that has replay people in Toronto who do not see Islander shots go over the goal line…but make up reasons to see opposition phantom goals count. This is a league that allowed Mark Messier to put his stick blade in your face. Thus is a league that allowed a Mike Bossy to be prematurely run out of hockey by goons who didn’t deserve to be in the sane building as him.

  58. 58 isles316

    Good point #30.

I like how the Islanders stood up for Okposo and showed team toughness. Even if Snow thinks the suspension is fair (which in my opinion it’s a joke) he should follow suit and stick up for this organization.

  59. 59 toorude

the media does not do their part in calling out those in power - dont bite hands that feed

  60. 60 Isles6

I would like to top the sarcasm by patrick in comment number three, but I can’t, so I am not going to try. Very well put Patrick.

  61. 61 mht

Wouldn’t Bruce Hood or Andy van Hellemond be better suited to be NHL czar of discipline. This whole episode reeks.Colin Campbell is clearly inept.By the way where is the NHLPA’s take on this?

  62. 62 Strummer's Army

Here is the deal, this is crazy! I can’t even believe Campbell has the balls to be so unfair. Let’s put it in perspective 10 games for a clean line change and trying to fight Phaneuf. Mottau two games for his illegal shot to the head of Nielsen (according to Campbell the jaw is not part of the head, I’m now suing the University of Florida for the anatomy class I took which apparently wrongfully informed me it was). Nothing for Phaneuf who’s hit was very similar to Mottau’s.

We all know the rest of the history.

I hope the Isles don’t bend over and take it. Their strategy of trying to play nice with Campbell hasn’t worked and won’t. The only way you deal with a guy like that is to expose him both public and private and GET HIM FIRED!

DAMN, someone sick Glen Beck on him, isn’t Campbell referred to as the NHL’s Discipline Czar?

  63. 63 Ray

    (52) Sorry pal, you just don’t get it. This really has nothing to do with Morency per say. It has everything to do with the fact that Colin Campbell has blacklisted the Islanders for years. Giving Witt and Pock 5 games each for something that Mottau did and got nothing for. Giving Simon 20 games and then giving Pronger 1 or 2 games for the same thing. Tyler Kennedy left the bench to fight Luke Schenn last year, and got suspended for 1 game. WTF is this nonsense about 10 games. It’s a freaking double standard with us and its pure BS. SCREW YOU CAMPBELL!

  64. 64 Rich

Maybe when we move to Queens or Brooklyn we will get more respect.

  65. 65 mickeyboy7

This is a league that has replay people in Toronto who do not see Islander shots go over the goal line…but make up reasons to see opposition phantom goals count. This is a league that allowed Mark Messier to put his stick blade in your face. This is a league that allowed a Mike Bossy to be prematurely run out of hockey by goons who didn’t deserve to be in the same building as him.

  66. 66 nyi351

Complete bs!!!!!! The line change was legal but because he went after Mr Sloppy Seconds he gets suspended. This dosnt seem right at all. What they are really taking away from this guy is his way of making a living. He has zero chance to prove himself even for a spot on The Bridge let alone on the Isles. I at least hope that the Isles will keep him on The Bridge. He at least shows a Passion for the Logo instead of the Paycheck. Garth step up Now. Challenge this!!!!!!!! If his line change was legal and fighting is legal what was the infraction here? Like I said before all that Mr Cambell is doing is screwing up this guys way of making a living!

  67. 67 Steve

Absolute BS. The guy tried to stand up for his teammate and gets suspended? Something is really wrong here.

  68. 68 Ugly Roe In Massapequa

Number one, it was a clean hit. Hard, perhaps unnecessary, but clean.

Number two, the kid left the bench for the sole intention of retaliating. League rules says he gets suspended.

Whining for the sake of whining.

  69. 69 Ajax

Get used to seeing this ..and worse. See, the problem is, with no enforcer, we are in for hurtin (no pun here, move along). This will happen again, the kids will get run at, with no enforcer others will have to step up. Picture this … JT gets run, who steps up thats on the ice? Let’s say Streit, he gets in a scuffle, breaks his hand. Where are we now? Yeah, I know, Streit isnt one to drop the gloves, but who will be on the ice that can? Think about this.

  70. 70 Eric

Morency gets suspended for first 5 games of NHL season–does that mean he will draw NHL pay for the off-days. (As a 1st time offender, you only get docked pay equal to the game days.)

    Any idea?

  71. 71 BSTFan18

Pascal is only on a NHL tryout. He has a 1yr 1way contract for the Sound Tigers.

  72. 72 Ken D.

What, no suspension for OKPOSO? Come on Campbell, you’re losing your touch. Surely there has to be another suspension in order for his helmet falling off…or for taking too much time to get off the ice.

    Absolutely ridiculous, as always.

  73. 73 german islesfan

    unbeleavble what a joke.

  74. 74 ny711ot

Only because I expect nothing less from COLON…did figren or koskinen even play in a preseason game? I was really hoping figren would show more…seems after last yrs season he is trending down….

  75. 75 Sumo Goalie

The Islanders should trade for Soupy’s kid so that they can beat on him in practice.

  76. 76 Matt

hopefully Koskinen gets alot of games in Bridgeport. with the uncertainty of Dipietro, it would be comforting to know that we have a young goalie in the system who could come up in a few years.

  77. 77 bcarey

i can’t be the only one thinking this but those drop down ads are pretty annoying. whatever happened to banner ads that don’t piss you off?

  78. 78 TimQ

Does everyone realize that this post about a less than marginal player has already drawn more comments than the previous post about the ultimate future of the franchise? I understand that there is passion. I understand that there is a feeling that the team is getting screwed regularly. Do not lose focus on the bigger picture here. Unless there is continued support for the Lighthouse project we won’t have a (local) team to root for. Get your butts down to Hofstra today to support the cause.

  79. 79 art

Ihave to agree with #77, Murray is probably laughing about how we have lost sight if the real problem facing this franchise- are we going to live? This preocupation with the bad incident a few days ago is like complaining that your coffee was served cold at your favorite restaurant, when tomorrow they may be out of business!

  80. 80 Tony

All is know is that when the Isles play the Flames again, someone on the team had better commit a violent act against Dion P. And you already know the player will get an unjust suspension anyway, so go for it.

  81. 81 a REAL hockey fan

____ Its not just about Morency and the IDIOTIC suspension peole your missing the bigger picture people!!

___ ITs about Colin Campell, Garry Butthead and the INEPTITUDE & double standard by this CLUELESS league,

___ Ray #53 made a GREAT post A+++…… The amount and length of Islander suspensions by Campbell is a joke, he clearly has a agenda and bias against the Islanders, he doesnt even hide it anymore, hes such a UNLIKEABLE figure, he really is —- go see the yotube vid of him getting grilled and NOT having answers with Ron Mclean on the Canadian hockey network, he doesnt have a answer for him, i CANT BELIEVE he has a job!!

__ Wheres Garth? Wheres the organization? Wheres the players association?…. Fight back guys!!!

  82. 82 Hoser14

Hey Strummer’s Army (#62) I’m all for Glen Beck as the NHL’s Discipline Czar! Glen Beck Rocks!

Is Colon Campbell still on the Ranger$ playroll? He just loves to hosed the Isles. Campbell gives Chris Pronger a pass for doing a skate chop and gives Chris Simon a long vacation on top of Ranger$ Ryan Hollweg’s into-the-boards-hit-from-behind-concussion-pounder! Hollweg didn’t even miss too many 5th line shifts. Boo Hiss!

ps: Why is ex-Ranger$ 4th liner Kris King running the NHL video booth? Was Tie Dumi too busy in Toronto getting a peticure? Woof! Woof! Throw a Dog a Bone!

  83. 83 Spud 31

Maybe somebody on the ice should have fought…

  84. 84 JTorBUST

stop all the whining , this has to be handled by whoever takes the ice next time with fanooch. I think the us against the world attitude could unite this team. Garth knows he has to pick up someone who can actually deliver a beating when necessary. It is almost worse to stickup up for a teammate only to receive a pummeling of your own, adds insult to injury. Garth is taking the Ned Braden approach to hockey , let’s bring in Reg Dunlop-

  85. 85 vigs

What gets me here is that Colin didn’t just screw the Isles (again!!!), he screwed the entire NHL. He basically put a protective barrier around every dirty player in the NHL. Another player crosses that barrier after a questionable hit, and that player gets 10 games while the dirty player walks away unscathed. Un-freakin-believable!!!!

  86. 86 kabbage

Hey CB, nice article in Farmhouse about Filatov. It would have been nice to get him in the draft, but I also like what the Isles did by getting Bailey as well as the others in the second round (our prospect list really needed that shot in the arm at the time).

As far as Pascal’s suspension, we shouldn’t kid ourselves. He jumped the boards to go after Diane Phaneuf. I applaud him for sticking up for his teammate but he knew that he would probably get a suspension for that. On some occasions, coaches also get suspended when a player jumps out onto the ice to fight. So maybe we got a little lucky in that regard.
