As reported at twitter.com/KatieStrangNYI

by admin on September 16th, 2009 at 12:08 pm

As Tweeted by Katie Strang, Frans Nielsen is returning to New York to have his knee examined. No word on when he injured it. This cannot be written off as routine because a team doctors are usually with the Islanders in camp. UPDATED at 2:00 pm - The NYI confirm to PB it is Nielsen’s right knee.

hope everything turns out ok with Frans and he is ready to start the season 10/3.

  2. avatar Blizzard says:

Drats!!!!…the injury bug has started already

  3. avatar Marc from Troy says:

    And so it begins again…

  4. avatar Madchef says:

awesome…..starting right where we left off

  5. avatar jcapisles says:

This guy is Tin Man II, behind our favorite goalie.

  6. avatar Jerky says:

Could this be related to the dirty hit he took against NJ last year? Forgot if his knee was injured as part of that hit and obviously don’t know if it’s even the same leg but wanted to throw the question out there…

  7. avatar mLem says:

Tin man II…did you see how he hurt his knee the first time? That has to fall into the “injuries that are hard to prevent” category…and who knows what this even is or how it happened

  8. avatar corey says:

every time i check the site during school something bad happends… not checking during school hours again

  9. avatar belarus says:

wow… knee… the worst sports traumas happen to the knees. damn!

  10. avatar Big Van Vader says:

This is just unacceptable. Unless this just happened and not from the NJ injury, he should have had his knee looked at all offseason. Will wait to get overly pissed about it until we find out the details, but the injuries have begun already?!?!?
Keep Tavares away from the rest of the team!

  11. avatar Brother Rat says:

I hope we can find out what’s wrong with it….but that’s perhaps exactly why he’s returning to NY, to see what’s wrong. Did we ever find out what exactly was injured after Mottau’s hit? I remember it being described as “knee injury,” “major knee injury,” or “multiple leg injuries.” Let’s hope it’s something unrelated that can get Frans back to 100% real soon. Still…..how frustrating…

  12. avatar Bryan says:

Well this opens up a spot for Sim.

  13. avatar Jim M says:

Something bad occurs with this team EVERYDAY

  14. avatar WM says:

If Nielsen misses regular season time, I’d think that Trevor Smith would be given a long look.

  15. avatar art says:

I feel bad for him. This can happen to anyone including big players. But that being said, Statistically injuries occur more often with smallish players and we have more of our share of both.

  16. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Normal reactions to this news include the following:

    “Oh sh*t.”

    “Not again.”

    “Uh-oh.”

    *eyes roll*

  17. avatar Chris TMC says:

I hope they are simply being very cautious. I hope you can find out what happened, CB… it would be appreciated- your words here show that you understand all of us want to know why, even if you dont know the answer yet.

  18. avatar EAF says:

welcome to the 2009/2010 season. Who is next?

  19. avatar TuxTax says:

It happens in every training camp, thats why NHL rosters have 2 way contracts. Nielsens a fine player, but I’m pretty sure they have someone to take his place. Besides, dont we need more wingers not centers on this team?

  20. avatar admin says:

UPDATED at 2:00 pm – The NYI confirm to PB it is Nielsen’s right knee…CB

  21. avatar isles316 says:

    ……

  22. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Is that the same knee that was injured with the dirty Mottau hit that justice has never been gotten for and Mottau and Sutter is still laughing about what a bunch of cowards the Islanders are?

This is why you have toughness. You have enough fire power to act as a deterent, peace is often obtain by power.

I really like Nielsen and feel he’ll only get better but he’s hurt a lot. I guess at this point for the right trade based soley on his injury history and the teams need to get bigger, meaner and more talented I’d include him in the right deal.

It’s serious if they are sending him home, instead of taking him to a larger CA city to run the tests.

  23. avatar Jon Mac says:

    Any idea how this happened?

  24. avatar kevin27NYI says:

i hate this team when it comes to injuries. last year we had the most. last two years combined we had the most. it better not happen again!

  25. avatar Mark says:

Injuries occur more often with smaller players?? Haha,I’d like to see where you pulled that statistic out of.

  26. avatar dp says:

Sorry to read this about Frans, he had been fun to watch before the right leg injury caused by the Mottau hit. And now I guess it’s back again to haunt the Isles. boy do I wish we had been able to sign colton Orr

  27. avatar art says:

Mark I’ll answer you this way. By accident if you collided with a small person and then a large person in the same way and you kept injury statistics over many similar repetions you would find the obvious the smaller individual on average would be hurt more often or in a worse way than the larger person. This is one reason that females do not compete against males in contact sports. Of course the last analogy has many more factors involved. However this reasoning is why there are weight categories in boxing.

  28. avatar Heineken says:

I see tavares will be playing tonight… will this preseason game be on msg+ ? anyone know?

  29. avatar Deadhead654 says:

#14 I think you confuse this team with the Mets.

  30. avatar I think I am says:

Will it be on any medium? radio?

  31. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

is the right knee the knee that was hurt last season?

Yes tonight Tavares plays and i believe oilers.nhl.com might be streaming it for free. that would be cool. 9pmEST.

  32. avatar Eric says:

It will stream on Oilers.NHL.com but in theory should only stream live in Oilers territory (ie Western Canada).

CHED-630 will also have the game live; that you should be able to find. Rod Phillips should have the call; the HOFer has been the voice of the Oilers since 1973.

  33. avatar Staten Islander says:

If this related to the injury from last year, they need to hunt down simon and resign him just so he can play against the devils

  34. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Botta just tweeted that he’s deciding tonight on the future of point blank. Gotta keep it going Chris!

  35. avatar Blizzard says:

Well on a lighter note Gaborik has groin problems…….

  36. avatar Matt says:

If the Oilers broadcast require you to be in Canada just use a Canadian proxy to view it.

I really hope it’s nothing serious with Nielsen, better safe than sorry.

  37. avatar hale says:

I love how one guy is hurt and people want to trade him already…can we wait for the mri at least…all these chicken little types need to calm down..we don’t even know what is wrong yet…

  38. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Matt (36), if that is the case then how do we do it?

I wouldn’t speculate on Nielsen’s injury just yet but it is way too soon to start going through this again.

  39. avatar Matt says:

Don’t mean to bombard this thread with links but I want to make sure my fellow fans get to watch the game…
If they black out the first, here is the Edmonton radio station that will play it:
    http://www.630ched.com/Sports/Oilers.aspx

  40. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

WOW!!! That didn’t take long … I was figuring the first injury would happen when the Isles played the Devils in an exhibition game.

Nielsen is another player who can’t seem to stay healthy … He’s gotta be bummed.

    Get well quick Franzy!!

  41. avatar matt says:

how do i watch from canadian froxy

  42. avatar Dan from NJ says:

CB twittered he is deciding on Point Blank tonight…C’mon guys and gals, we need to hit this up tonight.CB we need you to stay here, I am sure you will make the right decision!!!!

  43. avatar Eric W. says:

Awesome…What a start to the new season First Neilson out and next Botta done and it will all end with a DP retirement by the end of the season…

  44. avatar Big Van Vader says:

So is this going to be viewable by Isles fans here on Long Island tonight online?

  45. avatar neologizer says:

    Mark Art

I think the injuries are a little more complicated then simply big/small player gets hurt more.

simplistically limbs are force mutiplying levers and Force= mass X lever arm. A longer leg will multiply the force of leg muscles more but the opposite is also true hitting a leg will generate more force through the leg and joint.

Simply put taller legs have greater torsion on their knee joint then a smaller person. Couple that with the fact that the physiology of ligament and tendon strength won’t be exactly proportional to a persons mass, furthermore local muscle strength and joint mechanics are individually different makes the situtation extremely complicated

In conclusion I’d love to see the data on such “small vs large” person knee injuries

  46. avatar mw147 says:

CB – is this a change in policy by the Isles? Last year all we would have heard is “lower body injury”. Now they are telling you (and Katie Strang) that it is the right knee.

If they have changed the policy I will be happy. The total information blackout, even when it was not necessary, really frustrated me last year.

  47. avatar Leo says:

rumors injury was caused by some confusion, seems Nielsen after a particularly heavy nite of drinking thought he was a NY Met

  48. avatar Merrick says:

I’m hoping that this is nothing more than needing eight weeks to get an exam in Saskatoon under the Canadian health care system.

  49. avatar dp says:

We need point blank, hope the decision is to keep it going :)

  50. avatar jim says:

    here we go again!

  51. avatar Spartiarti - RVC says:

Ha to the canadian healthcare comment. That’s what obama wants to do here.

Cb I really hope u continue pointblank. Katie strang just not doing it for me and bd galloff new site just not cutting it. Too much politics and not enough hockey.

    Pointblank must live on

  52. avatar jimfrombayside says:

how do we get the cadanian proxy to WATCH

  53. avatar beatlebailey says:

Keep it going cb this site helps your fanhouse page hits!

  54. avatar Les says:

attention who ever has there curse on the islanders please remove your kung foo grip at once we cant take it anymore

  55. avatar Tony F. says:

Oh please for God’s sake and the fans keep this blog going! I can’t imagine relying on Newsday for info. When you have a phenomenon like Point Blank you can’t say “sorry” and take it away, its its…Un-American. Or something like that. Please CB, pretty please.

  56. avatar hathead68 says:

What can you do but shake your head and shrug your shoulders?Let’s hope it’s just a tweak and they are just being cautious.
On an equally important note, make the right decision about Islanders Point Blank, CB … provided that the decision is to keep it going, eh? Well, just as I kept quoting the NY Lottery commercial to my boys before the draft lottery and the draft itself, “just a little bit of luck” is what we need for you to be able to continue IPB. All together now…!

  57. avatar Staten Islander says:

Does this mean we’re getting a Hawaii travel sight again?

  58. avatar isles72 says:

this just in -Frans heads back to Canada becuase he was denied care by his insurance company due to a pre existing condition

  59. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

i believe the stream is working on oilers.com

has yet to start. i hope it does.

  60. avatar kenny says:

they are streaming it live on their website

  61. Isles are on a Islanders.com

  62. avatar big dog says:

    woohoo 1-0

  63. avatar TuxTax says:

Bruno Gervais woooo hoooo! Hockey is back!

  64. avatar Islesin2010 says:

Tavares right by the post when the shot went in. Thought he might have got the tip.

  65. avatar MattyB says:

Well some things never change..Penalties as usuaul lol

  66. avatar db says:

good to see the kids out there tavares dehaan harmonic dibennidetto joensuu figren

  67. avatar Giaco says:

im sorry, i know its preseason but these are some of the worst announcers EVER

make an attempt to know the players playing at least

  68. avatar Leviticus says:

Strummer…there you go again. Overstated once more. More skill? Yes, bigger? When matched with skill. Your old NHL version if toughness? Well, see Detroit and Pittssburgh… Overrated!!

  69. avatar Leviticus says:

And please can we not assume if anyone is bigger they won’t be hurt?or this injury is related to the last one? Geez… Unbelievable!

  70. avatar cgs878 says:

Yay, so what, it’s just one player and one knee. Nielsen is just an average player, not a superstar. If it were Bailey or Okposo or Tavares, THEN we’d have something to talk about.

  71. cgs878 Don’t be ridiculos. Frans is an Islander as much is KO or bailey or JT… I like him a lot as player.

  72. avatar MattyB says:

Yea Neilson is just about as valuable to the Islanders as Bailey is. He is definetly valuable to the team

  73. avatar DLR says:

This just in- If you make more than minimum wage, you’ll be paying for Neilson’s doctor visit.

  74. avatar Chris Mc says:

CB could do a post on hockey pucks and Stummer’s Army would somehow relate it to the Isles not being tough enough. we get it.

  75. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Somebody give the Oiler’s play by play announcer the phonetic spelling of the Islanders’ players please … geeezeee! LOL!

  76. avatar Rebecca(and Baby P) says:

One good thing about the smallish players…more high sticking double minors

  77. avatar vukota says:

How has JT looked so far?

  78. avatar Rebecca(and Baby P) says:

i’ll take it…Joel hung in there

  79. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Nothing exciting from JT but for those endlessly lamenting that we didn’t sign an enforcer…Wrecker. Period.
    Go Isles!

  80. avatar DLR says:

Joel sucks. But, hes more fun to watch then Hunter.

  81. avatar vukota says:

Wow very impressed with the “Wrecker” in that one. That dude is 6’7 and he held his own. Nice job kid!!!

  82. avatar TuxTax says:

JT looks a little lost but incredible at faceoffs! Doing a lot of reaching playing defense, but has made a few nice passes kinda like how Bailey made some nice ones last year. Souray broke another pane of glass haha.

  83. avatar Rebecca(and Baby P) says:

    Ask about DeHann

  84. avatar Tony F. says:

Why is Park trying to block Souray’s shot in a preseason game? de Haan looks pretty good.

  85. avatar TuxTax says:

DeHaan looks good, a little nervous in the beginning but has some good stickwork and not afraid to shoot, drove behind the net on the PP and made a nice pass to the front of the net. Let the kid put on a few pounds of muscle and he will be ready sooner than he thinks.

  86. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

I think all the kids are holding their own … I think my only critique is some of the passing isn’t hitting the mark and see some passes to far to behind players … JT has yet to receive a pass in the red zone to let it rip … and the puck seems to be bouncing more than I’m used to seeing in Edmonton.

  87. Di Benedetto looke d solid in a first but then Gordon sat him on a bench and I saw him once in a second. He looks good though…

  88. avatar Rebecca(and Baby P) says:

    anyone else exited yet

  89. avatar JT says:

Where did Weight and Bergie go????

  90. avatar Fred says:

    Cant anyone hit the net!!!

  91. avatar Fred says:

DeHann is the man!! Keep him up!!

  92. avatar 2Bit says:

Agreed on DeHaan. He has been the best islander tonight…..and as i type this he scores! nice

  93. avatar TuxTax says:

    DeHaan nice one kid!

  94. avatar doc says:

de HAAN looked pretty good there. Maybe Snow knows what he’s doing afterall???

  95. avatar Tony F. says:

Gervais looked weak on that Souray goal.

  96. avatar Fred says:

Agreed – Looked like he had his heaad in Souray’s pants!!

  97. avatar JT says:

I hope neither Weight nor Bergie are hurt. Maybe Gordon just wanted to roll 3 lines and felt those 2 did not need to prove themselves in this situation……..

  98. avatar Fred says:

DeHaan 2nd Star…He looks real good and good Hockey Sense

  99. All I can say, battle of the first round picks goes to #12 over #1… :)

  100. avatar Hud says:

Tavares named called alot, he was around the puck, no worries, DeHaan solid, at the end, felt like a typical Isles game the past few years, lose the close one. The difference is kids with potential. Nice looking ladies in the stands for the Oil, eh?

  101. avatar Blizzard says:

de Hann looked a little lost initially but came on strong. Nice Offensive skills for the young D man. JT looked a little lost. Best forward of the night had to be Park IMO.

  102. avatar isles99 says:

i only watched the 3rd pd….these are my thoughts:
    a-tavares can stickhandle
b-de haan has high offensive potential
c-sim works his ass off but is just not right for this team
    d-nathan lawson sucks

  103. avatar Fred says:

JT probably still bothered by the bug!! He will be fine..

  104. avatar isles99 says:

i forgot to add that the edmonton oilers announcers need to take remedial english classes so they can sound like they actually know how to speak in complete sentences and pronounce the players’ names right

  105. JT stickhandle is amazing I got to admit… There was an episode in a second… Oh my God… Future is bright…

  106. avatar StevieL says:

OMG! What is the deal? If you show up as a fan at an Oiler game, you are guaranteed to be on TV? Did they miss anyone? Also cheesy gimmick showing Oiler players who score while live action is being missed!
Very impressed with Calvin!! Looked good!! JT will be fine. I would like to see him with Park. Again goals against from 2 feet in front. Gotta get physical!

  107. avatar Fred says:

16K plus for an exhibition game!!!!

  108. avatar MT says:

Bergie and Weight with groin strains, day to day, according to Strang’s tweet

  109. avatar Strummer's Army says:

#70 Leviticus once again there you go again bringing up Pit and Det. Both teams spent the summer making sure they got bigger and meaner.

You have to stop thinking of the new NHL. It’s not the year after the lockout. Every team in the NHL spent the summer getting bigger and tougher all over the organizations but the Islanders.

It’s not even open for debate if they need to Gordon, Botta, Snow, Logan all agree they need to more then any other team.

You want to know why they need more size, toughness, and guys who are not soft? Look at Neilsen and Hunter last year. One gets taken out and the other gets beat up. Hatcher also beat up Hunter. Isles are the only squad who would let none fighters be taken advantage of like that without retribution.

Want more proof? If you watched the game tonight the Souray go was a result that Bruno Geravis couldn’t move the man.

Isles roster despite some improvements to the organizations has too many of the same types of players. As much as I am excited about Streit and De Haan you can’t have them and then Hillen, Geravis, Meyer, Martinek etc. You need the Harmonics and guys with size and grit that can keep the crease clear.

Edm player starts going after DiBientto and stops the second Joensuu steps in.

It’s preseason and Avery is already running goalies, who on the Isles is going to deter him or anyone else?

Cal has Regher, Phaneuf, Bouwmeester at their core. All with great size and skill. Bouwmeester doesn’t have any grit but Regher and Phaneuf play complete games and are tough as hell, not to mention all-stars. Shea Weber is another player in that mold. Point is not everyone has to be a 5’11″ puck mover.

De Haan was very impressive. I thought Tavares played well.

Shame Weight and Bergy are suffering from the dreaded groin strain.

I was impressed with everyone tonight except Geravis and Kohn.

One thing to watch is the Isles have the first choice the entire season as guys are waived. It will be interesting to see if they can add some good talent that way.

I am very impressed with the quality of the net broadcast even if the Oiler announcers struggled, the picture quality was fantastic.

  110. avatar Isle be back says:

Get rid of Scott Gordon. He’s obviously not putting the players through enough in camp to have them prepared to play NHL caliber games.
