PRE-GAMER: NATE THOMPSON - His approach with Reich and Jackman, and on Phaneuf’s hit-and-run

2:50 pm - Point Blank just caught up with center Nate Thompson on the phone after the Islanders’ morning skate in Saskatoon. The Islanders “host” the Calgary Flames tonight, so we kept it brief.
Okay, Nate. Let’s get right to it. Who are your linemates tonight?
I’ll have Jeremy Reich on my left, Tim Jackman on the right.
What’s your take on Dion Phaneuf’s hit-and-run?
I don’t like it. He’s one of the best defensemen in the league and one of the biggest hitters. He’s also a big guy capable of answering his own bell. Scott Stevens played that way and never backed down. If you’re going to hit guys the way Phaneuf went after Kyle, you’d like to think he would stand up for himself.
How do you approach tonight’s game?
Nothing needs to be said. Everyone knows what happened. Look, no one’s going to do anything stupid tonight. That would not be worth it. But we will play hard and we will stick up for each other.
How do you think your team responded on Thursday night?
I’m proud of our team. I think we handled it correctly. Pascal did what he had to do. Later on, Matt Martin tried to take care of business. We played hard and we finished our checks, just as we will tonight.
How’s camp going for you so far?
Really well. This is my second year here, I’m healthy and I have a lot to prove. I have to show I’m a player they can rely on to win key faceoffs, kill penalties, take on a fight when the time is right. My confidence is there and I’m optimistic things will work out well for me and the team this season.
I’m curious if you saw the reaction from fans when I posted over the summer that you were taking the team to arbitration.
I didn’t, but I understand there can be a reaction to stuff like that. It was only business between the Islanders and me. By filing for arbitration, it guaranteed that we would get a contract settled. That’s what was most important to me. I didn’t want it to drag late into the summer. There are going to be times when the fans love you and times when they hate you. If I do my part, that will get taken care of. My goal is to be an important part of this team.
Jeremy Reich is not a new player to you.
Not at all. He’s a friend from two years together in Providence (AHL). I’m very familiar with him and Jack. Jeremy is a tough player and he scored 21 goals in the “A” last year. I’m really excited to be playing with Reich and Jackman tonight. My hope is that maybe you’ll see us as a line with the Islanders this year.
Comments.

Go get ‘em boys!
Good responses by Nate.
Way to go Nate!!
destroy them…is this on tv?
Great pic, CB.
Not a 45 fan but if he knocks someone on their ass tonite I will begin to re-think his value. We have to have some toughness somewhere outside of Jackman.
Can we get a link to tonites game? Please!!!!
Nice interview here. I want to see something out of him tonight, as well as this year. Maybe he could become a good faceoff man and penalty killer, and help round out a 4th line. Although we do have a lot of defensive forwards, we could use some more offensive forwards.
so far , no tv
but someone posted a link to audio of the game at islandermania (its in the game thread somewheres)
Audio = http://fan960.com/onair/.
It’s the Flames feed. I’ll do some looking around to check if there are any TV options.
Video = http://www.ustream.tv/channel/flameshockey
This may work. Enjoy everyone. Can’t wait for the season to start!
GREAT QUESTIONS CB!!! and GREAT Answers Nate!!!
I have to say … you two pretty much covered it CB. Listen … Nate said it perfectly. Nobody is going to do something stupid tonight … and that is how it should be. There is plenty of hockey between now and March that has to be taken care of and we don’t need anymore suspensions and injuires. The guys suiting up for the Flames tonight have nothing to do with the hit on KO.
Hope the Isles paste the Flames tonight on the score board while sending a lil message.

When is our #1 goalie going to play? Or is Snow waiting for the season openner ? He will have lot’s of practice stopping soft balls in practice by then! In the meantime we can use our practice goalies in the preseason- how many do we have 6 or 8 I’ve lost count? At least maybe they could get fighting lessons they are going to need them!
Nothing so far, except radio feed.
We have power play
i don’t think the game is at all televised tonight folks…even flames.com isn’t streaming the game tonight…which means we’d be SOL. i think. hope i’m wrong though!!!!!

Wrecker just got a misconduct?
I really like the Wrecker’s enthusiam but he needs to lay-off the caffeine a little bit.
Hmm…I can’t even get the audio feed to work for some reason, so you guys are my eyes and ears tonight.
Big Chief…The Best!!! Gotta love those Canadian commercials ehh?
Wow! Check out the box score of the Flyers/Toronto game! LOL
>>> Great interview CB, and Thompson sounds like a good guy to have on the team, i like him and think he is progressing to be a better player..
I like that the Isles are ‘being smart “, nothing dumb-silly but will also play with a lil passion, thats pure winsauce!!!!
… Anyone have a reliable link yet? video feed?
PS _____ HAHAHA I JUST PUT ON THE TV AND YOUNGBLOOD (the hockey movie) is on Encore! HAHAHAHAHA, thats great!!!!!!
man, Haley took a hell of a punch. Brutal.
Wrecker was responding to a legit hit. The islanders just need to hit people.

FIGHT! Jackman and Murray
When the Flames announcers call it a draw, that means we won the fight. just wait to see if it is on hockeyfights.com tomorrow
was there a Haley v Prust fight in the first? how was the description?
I just heard Big Bruno Gervais - gotta love radio.
Strang spoke to okposo at the game tonight
“He’s got several cuts on his face and he looks a little swollen, but said he’s pretty much symptom-free. He wants to be cautious, however.”
“So he’ll take a few more days to rest and then get re-evaluated before beginning with light activity (such as riding the bike)”
Big Bruno Gervais, I heard that too, wouldn’t it be great to have some really big guys on defense who could skate?
Well, apparently Phaneuf isn’t in the lineup tonight against the Flames, but they come to Long Island on March 25, 2010. Hopefully Islanders take their frustrurations out on the pussy that night.
the wrecker wasnt sent off for the game, just for the 10.. hes back out and playing…(which is bull to begin with, 10 mins for yapping is bull)
So doe Martin make the team?
yes he does
GD better make the team.
If Martin doesn’t make the team, he’ll definatly be up at some point during the year
Just got home from the game (3 hour drive) Martin looked ok but nothing stellar. I think he starts the year in Bridgeport unless there are a number of injuries. Hunter played well as did Jon Sim (1st star). Anyone who questioned the signing of Rollie should look at the first half of this game. He made a number of very good stops. Very disappointed in Joenssu. I thought he was the worst Islander out there tonight. He spent more of the game picking himself off the ice than on his skates. He seemed off balance all night. Not a good game for him at all. Nice win by the club.
Thanks for the perspective, Jmont6. How did Poulin look? I hear he looked great in the first game against Calgary…was he sharp last night?
I am loving Poulin. He looked outstanding in the game on the 17th- couldnt see him in the game last night, but from what I heard he made some great saves.
He looked good. Had no chance on first goal. And second goal he was bowled over by a Flame (ref said knocked in by an Islander - not sure I agreed. With the Isles now deep goaltender pool will be interesting to see where he stands.
