ROB CARLIN HIRED AS PRE-GAME SHOW HOST
Also: Newsday only local outlet going to Saskatoon
Point Blank has learned that Long Island native Rob Carlin has been hired by MSG to be the pre-game host on telecasts of Islanders road games. For the last three years, Carlin has been the weekend sports anchor at ABC-2 in Baltimore. In other Islanders media news, we’re told that Newsday will be the only local media outlet covering training camp in Saskatoon. None of the other New York newspapers or TV stations (including News 12) are covering the first days of John Tavares as an Islander. Needless to say, Point Blank will also not be there. In hockey news, the NYI have no training camp player invitees. Comments.

eh, i am not worried about how much press is up at camp. we only need one person to report what is going on.
-
Thats a sad state of affairs when nobody, Not The Daily News/POST, Not SNY/YES, Not even MSG-2/MSG+/FSNY2 or whatever they call the BS channel that Dolan conveniently has the Isles buried nowadays.
Is it even a consolation to have Cablevision’s self-serving rag, Newsday there?
Man imagine if this team and their rabid fanbase had a real outlet………
Maybe someday tell invent PointBlank, and run with the idea………..
I hate the web of BS that clouds this team
P.S.- How many pre-game shows we gettin this year like 27 vs the rags full 81?
Now I’m fired-up, when can we revolt and claim the respect/coverage this team deserves………..
-
All we really need in camp is CB, the rest can go home cause the coverage won’t be as good anyway..
Maybe JT fist camp should be low-key, I’m hoping that the press backs off a little, he might enjoy the fact that he can take a break from being the face of the franchise.
with a little luck, JT will prefer the quiet of LI, as opposed to the giant microscope he be under in any canadian city.
As for the canadian media sending more coverage than the NY media, I think the CA media would stop a broadcast to announce Sydney popped a zit…I love hockey, but some of the coverage up there is a little over the top. -

At least that first pre-season game will be on the NHL Network
-
yes while it is sad that no other local newspapers are going to camp, the other papers dont even cover the islanders, and even if they did, it this economy where staff is being cut right and left i find it hard to believe that a paper like th epost or something even if they wanted to get back to covering the islanders would not send a reporter to camp.
remember they can not travel with the team, accommodations for a week or two, that is not inexpensive.
-
That is just insane local papers are not going to be covering Tavares and the rest of the guys in camp. This will be remembered when the Isles are the best team in the NHL again.
I am hoping Mr. Botta will be going to Saskatoon, so we can have top notch coverage.
Thank you God on Monday we get to see the Isles in preseason game! I am hoping to see Koskonin, Martin, Tavares, Bailey, Okposo, Bergy, De Haan, Joensuu, Ullstrom, Marchinko, Figern, Reichlecz, Harmonic etc.
I am guessing once again there will be no Petrov at training camp?
As far as the fanhouse article today, there will be demand for the Isles for sure. Will Wang continue to be the owner? Only if the team remains on LI I think but who know’s he loves the team so perhaps he’d remain the owner if it moves out of state.
The point I want everyone with a vote to understand is CB clearly points out what we all know, the state and county badly want this and have moved it forward as fast as they could. They did their work. Despite a recent public stance in fake support for the project Kate Murray still wants to prevent it. It seems ass backwards that a town could hold up something the county and state and citizens want. I would hope the county/state could take the power away from TOH.
Regardless if it is approved before the election or not please remember how Murray has jerked everyone around and been difficult, fake and self serving. Ya’ll don’t need her in office, she proved she doesn’t deserve the job. Vote her out of office either way.

idea…. if we finally get the lighthouse… we need to get our own TV station, not only broadcast and cover the Islanders, but have exciting shows! EX: A documentry on the building of the lighthouse, A news show to compete with News 12, live coverage of other events going on around Long Island (including college sports events at Hofstra and SUNY Stonybrook)…just to name a few ideas! That would really put a dent on the empire that is the Dolan Family!
-
I’m not shocked that nobody but Newsday will be covering training camp even now that we have Tavares, but I really want to see the Isles upload a bunch of videos daily to Islanders TV. They did a good job uploading videos for Mini Camp.
-
FYI: NHL.com will have a writer at the first exhibition (it’s the Hockeyville game, a big deal in Canada).
While we’d all like to see as much local media coverage as possible, sad to say, the demand isn’t there. No NYC-based paper/radio/TV station is going to drop the thousands of dollars needed to send a person to Saskatoon and around Alberta for 10-12 days — not with the Yanks heading for the playoffs and football starting. Nor would they want to devote the space.
This is not an isolated trend — even big papers are cutting down on coverage of MLB, NFL, etc. The NHL is at the bottom of the food chain in almost all of its U.S. markets, and is covered accordingly.
What can you do? Contact the media outlets and tell them you want more coverage. Also, hope the Isles’ Web site steps up.
-
CB will you be there? As someone else said you are all we need.
-
You mean the Post and the Daily News wont be there?? How’s that different than last year? We get no coverage anymore, even if the economy was good. We are the Rangers “red headed stepchildren” who get no respect. Cue Rodney Dangerfield…
-
I certainly hope that Islanders management is not complaining about the lack of coverage. They picked the location. Does anyone recall what the coverage of training camp was in past years when they were in Lake Placid or Nova Scotia? Perhaps a less remote locale would have garnered more media coverage.
-
Yup, only Newsday is there… and in todays paper there was- nothing. Great!
-
CB, what Im wondering is that, if Rob Carlin is going to be there what does that mean for Chris King (who was rumored to still be working for the organization) and for Butchie?
-
#11, good point. I also think that the only city in the US where the NHL is the #1 sport for that city is Detroit.
-
I’m surprised there are actually six communities interested in bringing the Islanders to their town. This sounds like a Reggie Dunlop scam telling writers that retirees in Florida want to go to hockey games.
-
this is one of the many reasons why I think this blog should be sponsored. I do not know if the team would be covered more if they were a winning product but it would be tough to cover a team and share news better than Chris.
-
CB- Any news on any training camp invitees?
Possibly enforcers?
-
A team that has been as bad as the Islanders have for over a decade shouldn’t expect to get much press. Look at the Buffalo Bills. They’re a NY team right? When’s the last time you saw an article about them in any paper outside of extreme western NY. The papers are going to write stories that they think will sell their product and beyond us Islander fans no one gives a crap about our team. Also it is very hard to find Katie Strang even mentioned in Newsday. Seriously, go over there and look at the list of colomunists with their pictures. Logie and a bunch of others are there but no Katie. Not to mention she hasn’t written more than two paragraphs on the Isles since she’s taken over. If they ever become a good team again everyone and their grandmother will want a piece of the action, that’s just the way it is.
-
My biggest issue is why the is our training camp in Saskatoon? I know the decision was made LONG before we drafted JT but what a stupid way for this organization to conduct business. Why we’re not doing training camp at Iceworks and playing our home preseason games to gain interest in the team in both the NVMC and perhaps in Bridgeport for the young guys is really really stupid. I know it’s good for team building yada yada yada but it didn’t work out so well last year in Nova Scotia, did it?
When will the Isles do something conventional for a change?
-
Who are the Kansas City Media sending? Ok, smack me, had to be a wise a$$
-
OK Staten Islander,V-8 slap to the head. LOL.
On a serious note, should it be a surprise that only snoozeday is the only media uotlet. Despite Taveras,The Isle’s are still the red-headed step child in this area. -
IS there a deadline for invitees? Could Snow be playing possum again and have secret invites out there? LOL
-
really annoys me that we do not have any invitees. We should have between 3 and 5. As far as im concerned we definitely need an enforcer.
-
if his pregames are for ROAD GAMES.. then what is happening for HOME games? no 3rd wheel? or is that Kinger’s new role (the home game show guy)
-
i love how you say katie strang has got us covered “hourly”. in case you haven’t checked cb, her coverage SUCKS and she writes very few posts. lets all face reality, the isles had a good thing going which they cut and are now left with sh*t
-
Chris TMC – Camp does not start is Saskatoon until Saturday. But your point about nothing in Newsday is still valid.
-
It is good to see that George Carlins’ son is part of the Islander family, only if he doesn’t say any of those seven words!
-
Sponsored blog. I never really understood its significance until the blog wasn’t sponsored anymore to be honest. So basically CB you are doing this now on your own free time I’m guessing? In addition to your new gig at fan house.
I took for granted that you would just be there at camp. I’m seeing deeper things at play here now. You are very professional towards your colleagues which is admiral. However, Logie was better than Strang and you are better than Logie IMO.
Now with Strang the only local media outlet covering the Islanders training camp, John Tavares’ first, I cant help but fear its writing on the wall.
-
Hey Jim from St. James the Canadien hockey coverage can not be any more over the top than the New York baseball coverage. Do we really need 4 guys covering each baseball team in Newsday. How about when A-rod pops a zit?
-
things are looking up… I thought sparky was going to be the pregame host
-
Incredible that this team cannot make an 80-100′k annual investment plus expenses in pointblank. Cb would it be more than that? This site is the greatest pr piece the team has ever had hands down now we will have zero coverage for the most promising draft pick since denis….pathetic. Dey is an absolute joke and I’d be willing to bet that ego won over economics…don’t delete me cb..!
-
i agree totally with Isles99, the “new” newsday blog coverage is a joke.
-
I hate to say it but islander fans have been screwed for years and this is just the icing on the cake. Islanders finally get something right with you and then wait… they mess up yet again. Maybe we can sign an enforcer because every other team is tough. No wait we are the islanders. we do not do anything right.. Unfortunately Im a die hard fan.
-
Over the last couple fo days Katie has had blogs about JT, Martin and Comeau. She even beat CB to the punch on the non-invitees. Book mark her. Im sure we’ll see numerouse updates once camp starts
-
I am beginning to get the feeling Chris has all but given up on a new home for PB and moved on toward focusing on his National,or should I say No America responsibilities at Fanhouse. This is perfectly understandable. When you must support a household, priorities take precedence. I also think the possibility exists,Wang’s passion for The Project has waned and he is counting the days to see the degree of interest in his Franchise. There comes a point in time when Political Corruption and losing millions takes its toll. Shame on TOH and its conspirors for turning their backs on the Heart of LI,prefering to satisfy ‘other financially interested parties’ down the road apiece in return for “God only knows”! Gosh I hope I am wrong, but the Islanders operation since the signing of Tavares has all but come to a standstill with the Cap Floor requirements barely reached. The silence in Islander Land is deafening.
-
SHEESH -we haven’t gotten any good news lately, have we….
-
CB, how often is it that an NHL team has zero invitees? Has this happened before in recent times? Some perspective would really help us out here. I have seen lists and it seems that every other team has invitees this season except for us. Why do the Isles always seem to be the oddballs?
-
Wheres CJ Papa gonna be? and why road games, is this new guy gonna split games with CJ? maybe someday the islanders will be relevant in the new york media’s eyes. Obviously it isnt now nor in the near future.
-
Lets face the facts. We were a last place team and newspapers across the country are cutting budgets. The lack of coverage should be of no suprise. Nor should the lack of progress on the Lighthouse. Nothing good will come about with Ms. Murray in office. Lets hope there are enough Islander fans in TOH to vote her out. Our local and national economy are sinking and we have a developer who wants to spend billions in our town and county. Yet the TOH could care less. They should be kissing Mr. Wang’s feet and begging for his support. Vote No for Murray!!!
-
It is a hard truth, but why would anyone send media up there? The Jagr quote was accurate, in NY hockey ranks as the sixth sport behind “fishing off some guys boat”
Don’t be shocked this year when even Rangers road games are covered by the AP or news wire sources. Newspapers are dying, and NHL coverage is not a prioity in our market
-
I miss Deb!!!! And now CJ is gone? What’s the deal!!!!!!
-
Congrats to Rob Carlin for the new gig. He will be doing both pre and postgame shows for all away games and helping out at some home games too. A real good guy from Bellmore that’s coming home from the ABC TV sports anchor spot in Baltimore, and previously had covered the SEC in Alabama.
-
NYI did this to themselves. No NYC-based paper/radio/TV station is going to bother covering NYI when NYI ignores the NYC market with not being heard on radio etc. Sucking for 15 years doesn’t help either. I’m suprised Snoozeday is going.
-
there would be no reason to read newsday but for the islanders coverage….the paper blows it is a cut and past job from the AP
-
Carlin looks like he’s about 22… But at least we have a homer in there.
-
I had a link to the Islanders section of Newsday on my Yahoo homepage. But since Newsday screwed up the site, each day Yahoo shows me this “Most recent content added one month ago.” The link still brings me to Islanders section of Newsday but it doesn’t always show me KS’s blogs entries. Some of you may be not seeing them as well so I would suggest that you bookmark
http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/isles-files-1.812028
and then click on the Islanders link from that page, after you read the blogs, so you don’t miss anything from any of the other writers.
Also, I don’t mind that no enforcers were invited to camp. They would just be there trying to prove their worth by pummeling one our more valuable players. A serviceable goon can always be brought in during the season, if needed.
-
I’m very concerned about the Lighthouse project. Not sure what political capital there is for Murray to keep fighting this. Vote “NO” for Kate Murray. Give anyone else a chance for a few years.
-
this just sucks..newsday blows, CB is the only TRUE site for isles news.. sorry cb but its the truth..logie and katie ok but couldnt hold your pen.
this team wants people to follow it and go to games but they cut the hands off the people who convey team info on a daily basis.
GARTH wake TFU and see what youre about to discard. You are a loon if you cant see what WE the FANS want and DESERVE.
You waste your dough on neverwill be’s on the ice every year…how about paying for a product that delivers day in and day out…take care of CB and do the right thing.
anyone notice pointblank is still on isles website even though its not team sponsored anymore?
signed
FED UP IN SUNNYSIDE -
Newsday is very shortly to become a pay site, cutting off the last source of Isles news for us not on LI that can’t buy the print paper
I am starting to think I should enjoy this season, it very well could be the final one.
-
We may as well bring Deb Kaufman back.

That’s going to look silly when there are more Canadian news outlets at Islanders training camp than New York news outlets. Hopefully that will change soon.
