WISELY, dE HAAN RETURNED TO JUNIOR
Islanders send Moore and Smith to Bridgeport

by Chris Botta on September 30th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

1:05 pm - Rechlicz, Thompson and one-way dealers remain. Other than rise of Moulson and pickup of Schremp, camp goes as expected. Reader poll after Lighthouse thread.

smart move with de haan. good kid will great to see in the future. hope moulson stays for the start of the season. looking forward to seeing what schremp can do but not expecting all too much. was at the islander game last night at the rock. Love Wrecker but he caused the islanders harm a few times with his antics. he may need to go down.

  2. avatar Darryl Mentro Sr. says:

I hope Garth Snow will grab another waiver-wire steal in Matt Lashoff, particularly since de Haan has been returned to Oshawa.

  3. avatar Brian Dinka says:

Darryl, Lashoff already passed through waivers unclaimed and was assigned to the AHL by Tampa.

  4. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

I would have liked Lasoff myself or even Jones. Oh well, time to drop the puck. Let’s go Islanders!

  5. avatar Matt says:

am I the only one who thinks that Nate Thompson brings nothing to the table? we have so many ahl players on our team.

  6. avatar Darren says:

No, you’re not the only one!

  7. avatar stevedepot says:

Lashoff cleared waivers for those paying attention.

  8. avatar UIF says:

Very smart move with de Haan. Last year I felt like they threw Bailey into the fire to justify picking him so high and I was hoping the wouldn’t do the same with de Haan. That said, if he adds size, he could be ready sooner than later!

Re: Thompson, as of now, I think our centers are Tavares, Bailey, Thompson and Park? Once Weight is ready, maybe Thompson goes down, and more likely when Nielson comes back.

  9. avatar Chris Mc says:

If this lineup offers anything, its promise. And itll be exciting to see some of these kids pan out as the season progresses.

Im praying Thompson is going to be the healthy scratch/injury replacement guy on this team. Bc he really doesnt bring anything offensive to this club. Hes Richard Park with not a shred of offensive talent.

  10. avatar Bryan says:

glad to see de Haan in Juniors. Showed us a lot though so its another player to be excited about.

I would rather give this fella Greg Moore a chance then watch another year of Nate Thompson.

  11. avatar Crackhead Theo says:

Nate Thompson is the biggest waste of a roster spot that we have. The only reaosn he sniffs the Isles lineup is because he played for Gordon in Providence. And its complete crap that he gets to play here because of that. He sucks.

  12. avatar Blizzard says:

…gonna be fun watching de Haan develop. I for one was questioning picking him when we did but certainly not now.

  13. avatar Darryl Mentro Sr. says:

I believe Schremp is a center and can’t be sent to Bridgeport without first clearing waivers, so he’s a keeper for a while. Park can always play wing, but the team will still have too many centers when Weight and Nielsen return.

  14. avatar Mike says:

What does Thompson do? What is his role? He scored 2 goals last season, and he cant fight so where does he fit? He is utterly useless imo.

  15. avatar Staten Islander says:

Good move with deHaan. Can’t wait to see what he grows into. Wrecker might have to stay, when the others come off the IR, I’m sure someone will be replacing them. Gonna be another long year.

  16. avatar mw147 says:

Am I the only one who thinks Thompson is not the worst player ever to hit the NHL? Like with other players (Park, Hilbert), it is OK to have a Thompson on the team IN HIS PROPER ROLE. No he is not going to be the first line center and score 30 goals. He is not even a third line player.

But he hustles, can check, play d, kill penalties, and have the occasional middleweight fight. The big question mark with him is his health. Can he stay on the ice for 75 games? If so I do not think he is a bad 4th line player.

  17. avatar MIkey Pants says:

Hey, I don’t understand why they had to send de Haan to Juniors? Why not send him to the Bridge?? Sounds like a Budget thing to me!

  18. avatar Vukota says:

Dehaan is too youn to play in the AHL

  19. avatar Darryl Mentro Sr. says:

Actually, it’s an NHL rule thing for a player his age. It’s the Isles or jumiors; no ther choice was available

  20. avatar MIkey Pants says:

Thanks guys. I guess I was an ignoramous?

I guess I should stop thinking there’s always a conspiracy issue going on….

  21. avatar Cary says:

15 I see your point. Thompson is basically invisible save for the occasional fight but that’s not necessarily a bad thing for a 4th liner. It just means that nothing terrible is happening when the fourth line is on the ice.

I think most of the Thompson frustration has to do with him getting a spot because he’s played for Gordon and because he doesn’t seem to have much potential to be any better than he already is.

  22. avatar Jethro09 says:

Smart move. No need to rush this kid. He’ll add size and experience this year in the OHL. Maybe next year he’ll be ready for the big time.

  23. avatar Since72 says:

    @16 mw147

    I agree with you.

  24. avatar MIkey Pants says:

I’m not a Thompson fan at all. And it does have a lot to do with the Gordon connection. If there’s an opportunity for a guy to overachieve on the fourth line I’d rather it be for a guy who has a much higher ceiling than Thompson. Why not some kid who’s hungry for a shift or 2 a game and who might be able to sneak one in once a week?

  25. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

I must admit though that I’m a bit surprised that Snow didn’t take Lashoff. Since the team is rebuilding, wouldn’t you want a young 22-year-old defensive prospect who was a former first round pick over an older veteran who isn’t much more than a depth player (ala Meyer)? I’d love to hear Snow’s reasoning. Chris, why don’t you ask him? LOL Everyone knows this team is far from being a contender so picking up another prospect on waivers obviously couldn’t hurt and defensemen (and power forwards) are notorious for taking longer to develop at the NHL level.

    And that’s my $.02 everyone.

  26. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Oh, and one more final thing….I also agree that Thompson should be replaced in the lineup. There are far better 2-way players out there. Hell, give it to one of our grittier kids if you have to.

  27. avatar islesfan999 says:

I wish we got Lashoff. I think he can potentially be a top 4 dmen in a year or 2.

  28. avatar nystrom23 says:

I think Schremp with the opportunity to play could be 20 goal 30 assist guy who could add skill….something that we don’t have beyond maybe 2 or 3 guys in our lineup…otherwise I am pumped for hockey season in general….love baseball but sometimes it gets a tad boring..lets drop the puck!

  29. avatar UIF says:

Maybe Schremp would be better off on the wing? Too many small centers…plus, all I’ve heard is what a great passer he is, and having a guy like that feather passes to Tavares sounds good to me. Maybe another guy like Bergy creating some havoc or Okposo as another scoring option and that has the makings of a line that might get more exciting as the season goes on.

  30. avatar MIkey Pants says:

Please don’t Ban me from here. I thoroughly enjoy being able to contribute.

I have this coworker of mine. He’s 30 years old, he used to play for the Stonybrook Seawolves back in the late 90′s. He can’t fight a lick but he sure can keep up with the over-40 guys in our Industrial League here at work.

I think he’d give Thompson a run for his money!

  31. avatar Strummer's Army says:

    Schremp is a LW.

It was the proper move to send De Haan back. LEARN TO LOVE THE GYM this year Calvin and you’ll earn a spot with Isles next season.

The scary fact is that he is better then all the vet d-men the Isles have then Streit right now. This team needs new players on defense and it cannot wait. It should happen before the season.

Love Riechlecz! Finally someone who won’t allow guys to mess with the Isles stars. Joel needs reinforcements right away.

Furthermore, Riech was the best fighter Bridgeport had. He is now out for a while and even when he comes back the broken wrist will make it a while before he can do his job. Riech was no heavyweight anyway and Bridgeport was always going to be in trouble with that. Snow needs a heavyweight for Bridgeport too now. There isn’t a guy on that roster then can handle the likes of Fritz and the other vet super heavy fighters in the AHL.

  32. avatar Jason says:

I’d rather see Bailey feathering passes to JT than Schremp.

  33. avatar Chris TMC says:

First off, best of luck to Calvin back in Juniors. Your solid play has thankfully shut up those who were bashing Garth for drafting you before they knew a single thing about you.

But I do have to ask this: Why do like half of the convos on IPB turn into people complaining about Nate Thompson? He is just a role player when the team is injured- we got him for nothing, he has a cheap contract, and he listens to the coach. But some of you act like the Isles give him top line minutes and are building the team around him or something! I do not for the life of me understand why he is the object of so many of your fixations.

  34. avatar Tony Dee says:

I like to see Garth to make another move.Since Reich is out with an injury. He should pick up some toughness. I like The Wrecker, but he should develop at Bridgeport. Check his career stats, he has’nt played that much hockey. I’d like to see them pick up Paul Bissonette of Pittsburgh. Guy’s nail as nails, will fight anyone, can skate and put up decent numbers in the AHL for a 4th line guy.

  35. avatar islesfan999 says:

Bisonette was already picked up on Phoenix

  36. avatar MIkey Pants says:

    Bissonnette is now a Coyote

  37. avatar Tony Dee says:

I just read it on Thn.com…it figures. Another toughie is D.J. King on St Louis. Looks like Cam Jassen is their main guy maybe Garth can work some magic.

  38. avatar Ray says:

DJ King has a broken hand is on IR as well

  39. avatar peter puck says:

#33 got to dump on someone and Andy Hilbert isn’t around anymore

  40. avatar Mark P says:

Thompson is a 4th line mucker….40 goal scorers do not develop playing 6 minutes a game, they stay in the minors playing 20 minutes a game….4th line center is the least of the isles problems.
Isles actually needed a playmaker on the wing….Unless Taveras is moved to wing….he does not end up with Bailey at even strength. Shremp is young enough to be worth a try. I am guessing the Coach had seen enough of him in the AHL to like his game.

  41. avatar Chris TMC says:

    Tell that to Jason Blake!

  42. avatar UIF says:

Well, speaking personally, I’m fine with Thompson being a callup for injured players. My problem has not been with him personally, just that the Islanders have far too many of those fourth line players. Right now they’re carrying Thompson, Park, Jackman, Tambellini, Rechlicz (maybe I’m missing one or two more 4-line caliber guys). Some of those guys bring a little extra to the table – Jackman has gotten better at driving to the net and fighting, Rechlicz brings his fists, Park brings some creativity and his “utility player” ability, and Tambs the fading hope he’ll be something better. For a team that desperately needs to have less fourth liners and more top two liners, I just don’t see any qualities that separate Thompson from the other guys.

  43. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

Yep, Thompson is our biggest problem. That’s like blaming the Mets’ season on Jeremy Reed!

Question on deHaan. Can he play nine NHL games at the END of the season? All the talk was about his playing nine & sending him down, but the NHL experience AFTER another year in Jrs. would be more beneficial, don’t you think?

  44. avatar mw147 says:

UIF #41 – I agree we have too many 4th line players. And you even forgot one – Sim is also ideally on the 4th line. However, I would take away Tambellini. He is not a 4th line player to me.

  45. avatar Brandon says:

de Haan can’t come back until his junior season is over

  46. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

I agree with you, mw147. Tambellini is not 4th line player. Somewhere between 7th & 8th line would be more applicable!

  47. avatar potvin rocks says:

This is a great move because it insures that they get quality minutes. They don’t need to be hanging out sitting on the bench. Let deHaan gain some weight. I was really impressed with him in the pre-season game. He will be great next year.
Though the question does remain, who will be the captain????

  48. none of you were complaining last year when nate thompson scored that shorthanded goal against the rangers, alright? give it a rest

  49. avatar Chris Mc says:

UIF beat me to it, the problem with Thompson is that we already have a 4th line, maybe 2 4th lines, and all of them produce more than Thompson. Jackman will be on the 4th line. Park should be centering the 4th line but bc we dress a guy like Thompson, Park ends up playing on one of the top 3 lines.

And there’s your problem with Thompson being on this team. Him playing moves Park into a slot that could be given to a guy who could develop into a Top 3 line guy. If Thompson was one of only 3 4th line forwards on this team there would be no mention of him whatsoever.

  50. avatar enforcer needed! says:

Thompson will be sent to minors after nielsen weight or someone gets healthy.

  51. avatar Phil says:

Geez..Park to me is more valuable than what everyone is saying…invaluable hustle, can score and great pk…no gifted hands but has many other assets.

    my 2cents

  52. avatar Vas says:

Why r we even talking about Nate Thompson! WE have so many other problems. But Nate is a 3rd line guy! On the Soundtigers!

  53. avatar Matt says:

I’m really surprised the Islanders didn’t sign a big enforcer to protect Tavares/Okposo/Bailey. especially after Okposo got crushed. i think if we had a Boogaard on our team that stuff won’t happen.

  54. avatar neologizer says:

Thompson is not bad in his role (4th line checker) His position is not to score goals its to check and kill penalties. He does a decent shift on that. You don’t want to put prospects in his position – its not a great way to develop them so its not like he’s taking time away from the youngsters

  55. avatar art says:

Our first line is really a second line and our second line is really a third line and our third line is really a forth line, Thats 9 men. that leaves about 5 extras including those not dressed but hanging around watching the game from the stands. Truthfully they are really role players or belong in the AHL. Some call this rebuilding other teams call us pathetic. The big deal this year will be the OK for the LH. When that happens it will trump all the talk about our standing.

  56. avatar rob76 says:

I think DeHaan will benefit a lot from another year in Oshawa he is very small and needs to fill out. When do we plan on naming our captain?

  57. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

there is no rush to bring dehaan up. we arent going to suddenly win cup b/c he on the team. its better he comes on later on when he can contribute significantly. Also you wont have the trouble of signing both him and Tavares to new contacts 3 years from now.

  58. avatar Shoogah says:

Aw, Little d. There’s always next year.

  59. avatar Giaco says:

Still some questions… whose the odd D-man out… is shremp playing Saturday? Line combos anyone??

  60. avatar louie dapuck says:

    Cant believe I forgot Bailey!!!!!

  61. avatar justin says:

Don’t really see a rebuild here, adding 25-28 yr old rooks is not a rebuild. Most teams throw out there 20 yr old rooks togeather and let them have there ups and downs, it pays off later.

  62. avatar a REAL hockey fan says:

Why all the hate for a 4th line center i dont get it? Hes only going to play 5-7 minutes a night – at least he hustles, plays with energy and hits people every nite. I HATE when a guy doenst score but also doesnt do anything else – at least he plays hard every nite

daHaan is a yr away, good move let him develop and put on 10-15lbs and get stronger. Hes a big piece of the future puzzle

Its a new season and im looking forward to it but i cant say this loud enough to fellow Islander fans…..

    …… P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E, P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E

  63. avatar TuxTax says:

OK, now we have a lineup, let’s play some meaningful hockey already. Who’s gonna be there on saturday cheering on our boys?

  64. avatar NickyL says:

Justin, what 25-28 year old rooks you talking about?

  65. avatar Rick says:

Nate Thompson will not be on this roster once Weight & Franz are healthy, so debating his merits as a 4th liner are pointless.

  66. avatar coral springs isle fan says:

Nate Thompson is a good face off guy as well and that is important in a puck possesion system like the Islanders play. Face off percentage was a huge problem for the Islanders last year. This role is even more important on the penalty kill. You lose the face-off and the other team gets to setup instead of the puck getting shot down the ice. This is the big reason why Thompson is on this team. You need two guys on the ice during the PK that can take the face-off. For instance Park/Thompson.

  67. avatar Kevin says:

Nate will be on the roster as long as Gordon is behind the bench.

  68. avatar Eric says:

Good thing they sent de haan back to juniors. He is not a 100% matured. Can’t wait to see what he is like in one to two years. Also what is taking Trevor Smith so long to mature into a NHL player. It’s been 2 1/2 years in the AHL.

  69. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Wisely being the key word here CB ~ It is my belief from my experience watching hockey that defensemen have the biggest adjustment breaking into the league and making an impact.

We can look at our old friend Campoli … and our new young emerging defensive wiz Gervais as prime examples of recent struggles and success.

de Haan self admittedly needs to add some muscle to that frame … he’s proven to me that he has a high hockey IQ … I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen. I look forward to seeing him emerge.

So it looks like the Isles will basically have last years defence corps … of course adding last season’s injured players back to the mix … Sutton and Meyer.

  70. avatar John says:

Thompson’s stats in Providence were solid. His last year there, I think he was a 20/20 guy. Last year, he didn’t have any training camp with the Isles and had unlucky injuries throughout the season. He worked hard this offseason, I think he was in MN, and should come back better this year. He’s a fourth line center: checking, hustling, killing penalties. Give the guy some time.
