A NOTICE TO POINT BLANK READERS
IMPORTANT: Regarding Comment Guidelines

by admin on October 15th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

This was posted two weeks ago, over a weekend – so many of you may have missed it. I’m posting it again because the Comments section is not what it should be. It appears we have a few dozen readers who only bring to the table some variation of “You are all morons,” “When are you people going to wake up”? and “You people just don’t get it.”

Write something smart about the entry posted. Write something creative and heartfelt. Raise the game. Elevate the discussion. Don’t just write for the sake of writing. Instead of commenting on other people’s comments, write something original. If not, write somewhere else.

October 2 - We haven’t done this in a while and we’ve added thousands of new readers since.  Please read the Comment Guidelines. For better or worse, whether some of you like it or not, Point Blank has been designed as a blog in which readers may comment on the subject at hand after each entry. This is the only way the blog works.

Point Blank is not a message board. There are dozens of Islanders message boards where fans can conveniently talk to one another all day and all night. PB is not a space for readers to start their own conversations by posting the equivalent of a blog in the Comments space. This is also not a place where readers call each other idiots or morons or -  since we all have washboard stomachs, of course – get into the personal appearances of politicians, broadcasters, writers, bloggers or other readers.

If none of the above works for you, or you are offended by it, please do not comment. If all these silly Comment Guidelines tick you off, please do not even come to the site.

If you want to ask a question or make an appeal on the Comment Guidelines, you’re welcome to do so in the Comments space in this entry. If you choose to reply disrespectfully, it will be your last one. With the season starting Saturday, it’s time to clean up the blog so everyone can read the solid contributions and feel like they can participate in at least a semi-intelligent website.

Here are the Comment Guidelines. Your choice. Thank you for hearing me out.

Yeah, I literally roll my eyes when I see people bashing other people over their ideas or how bad a fan they are or whatever the like. It’s petty nonsense. Honestly, if you get that offended by what someone says about a sports team, then a chill pill is definitely needed or perhaps some anger management sessions.

How about I simply quote Former U.S. President (and Engineer) – Herbert C. Hoover. “Ours is a great profession. There is a fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings jobs and homes to men. Then it elevates the standards of living and adds to the comforts of life. That is the engineer’s high privelege” -End Quote.

Unfortunately the TOH is an example of how great nations stop being great.

Chris, I feel like you have to do this all too often which is completely unfair to people abusing your site. Maybe we should just keep the comment section closed and utilize the live chat once a week to air everything out?

  4. avatar Lou Z says:

Im sorry, its completely unfair to you, just to clarify my last post.

Thanks for all that you do Chris

  5. avatar geduffer says:

Agreed. When you’re right, you’re right.

  6. avatar a REAL hockey fan says:

Good points Chris and ITS YOUR SITE, your the boss!!

.. I think a lil ‘honest/emotional talk’ is fine as long as your a adult and dont just ATTACK/INSULT people. Thats the big difference IMO, you can feel strongly about a issue,a topic or player but still be a adult about it

I think most people are here obide by it!

PS — HONEST QUESTION – Do u guys think any of this due to the highs/lows and rollercoaster of the Lighthouse Project? SRSLY? Im NOT FORGIVING anyone who acts childish or irrational but just thinking if thats possible, thats all..

  7. avatar Michael says:

Chris, a new addition to Newsday on how Murray is happy that Wang is keeping the project and how the TOH has mailed Wang saying that they can provide certainty if he is willing to scale back. I think you should provide the update, your posts reach thousands in hours! Keep up the great work with this board. Couldn’t live without it. – Mike

Thanks Chris for the reminder again. I think the Lighthouse issue and the status of the teams future location, gets many of us, including me, so upset. I have had season tix, off and on, since 1976. A total of 17 years. I would cut school and watch many Islander practice sessions at the old Racquet and Rink in Farmingdale.
This team is such a part of so many lives, and the story yesterday put many of us over the deep end.

  9. avatar Willis says:

    I hope it works.

  10. avatar Chris Mc says:

I think when a lot of us post we feel like we’re at the bar having a few drinks and discussing the team amongst friends. I think, even though we tend to see some familiar names on the board, that we’re on someone else’s site and must adhere to the way he envisions it.

Sports is heated, especially with our Islanders, but sometimes we need to step back and realize where the line is

  11. avatar west coast isles fan says:

I have to add something. I think cb that by letting certain people on here purposely twist islander (coach and management ) names just for amusement or jest, or to show a lack of respect for such an individual, and do it *repeatedly* as if it is a punch line ought to be disallowed. After all, you take seriously when you state you will not tolerate posters “getting into the personal appearances of politicians, broadcasters, writers, bloggers or other readers.” Islander players and management should fall under this category as well. If you cannot have the decency to talk about these folks without twisting their name on purpose, and it is quite clear when it is done consistently over and over, then it speaks volumes about your bias and your ability to hold an objective and impersonal discussion.

  12. avatar Blizzard says:

…there really isnt any room for name calling and such drivel. Arent we all Islander fans? Please adhere to the comment guidlines all!
