CAROLINA at ISLANDERS, 7:05 pm – Roloson starts…PB on XM at 6:10 pm…live chat Thursday…sked fluke

by admin on October 21st, 2009 at 10:53 am

UPDATED at 5:45 pm – Doug Weight is said to be feeling better and planning to play in tonight’s game.

3:00 pm – Read Chris Botta’s FanHouse story on Carolina goaltender Cam Ward

Chris Botta on Twitter

UPDATED at noon

Weight Sick: The Islanders have clarified the status of captain Doug Weight. He missed today’s morning skate because he is under the weather. He will be a game-time decision.

Nielsen Returns: A lot seems to be riding on the return tonight of center Frans Nielsen. While the 25-year old Nielsen is a talented player who makes the Islanders’ lineup better, he was 9-24-33 in 59 games last season and is returning from injury. Expectations should be reasonable.

Rotation Continues: Dwayne Roloson gets the start tonight vs. Carolina. Martin Biron likely gets the nod back home in Montreal. Asked about Roloson’s spotty play so far this season, Scott Gordon said, “I’m not worried about Dwayne.”

It’s Not the Third Period, It’s the First!: The incredible Islanders radio man Chris King produced this stat – in the collective first periods of their six games so far, the Islanders have just two goals on 73 shots.

On the Okposo Switch: Gordon on breaking up Kyle Okposo and John Tavares – “Kyle has had success wherever he’s played. I don’t think that’s going to change.” The coach also has confidence in the Tavares-Matt Moulson combination.

Will He Roll Four?: Gordon – “We have four lines capable of playing. We just have to make sure everyone is going.” Translation: don’t bank on it!

XM Radio at 6:10 pm: Jim “Boomer” Gordon was kind enough to invite me once again on NHL Home Ice on XM Radio tonight at 6:10 pm. Consider it the Islanders pre-game before the pre-game. Boomer is an Islanders fan and the talk is always energetic.

Live Chat Thursday: It’s gone so well so far, the Point Blank tradition of weeknight road game live chats will continue Thursday night when the Islanders play in Montreal. Some fairly wicked stuff, plus the occassional scoop or story is blurted out in these chats. If you haven’t joined the many yet, please do so on Thursday.

About the Gordon Article: The attempt in the final section of my post yesterday to explain my ground rules with the Islanders players failed to get the message across with some readers. If you wrote off the piece as, “Yeah, what were the players going to say about their coach?” I failed.

If the players do not believe in Scott Gordon and his style, I would know it and would write it. If some of the key figures “in the room” were lukewarm, they would have simply said, “Oh yeah, Scott’s great” and left it at that. They would not have filled my notebook with three or four paragraphs of specific insights.

As for why I put my opinion in the final segment of the story, I wanted to be a first-guesser. That’s right: the Islanders can win only five of the next 20 games and I’ll still stand by what I wrote about Gordon – and management’s decision to not give him a complete NHL team. The Islanders have their rebuilding plan and they’re sticking to it. Good for them. Just don’t blame the coach.

And yes, Coach Gordon could make his life a little easier by not selecting journeymen over John Tavares in the shootout.

The Hurricanes: When I covered them on Saturday in New Jersey, Carolina created few scoring chances against the Devils in a 2-0 loss. Here’s the lineup from Saturday. Since the Canes were shut out, count on Paul Maurice changing these up.

Whitney – Staal – Ruutu

Jokinen – Brind’Amour – Walker

Larose – Cullen – Samsonov

Kostopoulos – Yelle – Conboy

Hurricanes TV announcer John Forlund – an Adelphi grad – says Brind’Amour and Cullen could switch lines

Gleason – Pitkanen

Wallin – Corvo

Aaron Ward – Alberts

Cam Ward

Leighton

Schedule Oddity: The Islanders’ next two road trips are to Montreal, where they play Thursday and again on Monday. After playing the Sabres last Friday, the Islanders play there again on Nov. 4. That’s unusual. By the first week of November, the Islanders will be done for the season playing in Montreal and Buffalo.

The good spin: two cold places out of the way.

More importantly, if the Islanders can find their game soon, the schedule gets a lot more team-friendly after they play 14 of 17 on the road between Nov. 4 and Dec. 9.

  1. avatar UIF says:

The schedule for the rest of October is brutal…travel-wise more than opponents.

I’ll go out on an optimistic limb here and say the Isles pick up their first W tonight.

  2. avatar bob l says:

excited to see the 3rd line, tamb’s must be chomping at the bit…

i am worried about our poor team shot% though, i’m sick of missed nets and easy saves that don’t create rebounds, has gordon addressed this in practice?

  3. avatar JayK says:

There was this oddity in the schedule a few years ago where the Islanders played all of their four games against the Bruins in March, both home and away. It just sort of shouted out “oops…we forgot!”

  4. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

I am feeling our first “W” tonight.

Unless it goes to a shootout . . since Roloson is going to be in nets. Hopefully he’s spent some time working on these!

  5. avatar Zteller says:

I feel this is our optimal lineup with what we have. Lets see how they all work together. At least bailey now has some people who can shoot a little bit. Get a win tonight boys

  6. avatar Staten Islander says:

Gotta get a “w” tonight. I still remember a complete THRASHING that the Canes gave them late last year

  7. avatar Madchef says:

wow 5 out of next 20 cb….I hope you are wrong…going to the game in Montreal on Monday. Glad the habs stink so they have a chance at the W. I hope the habs fans have a sense of humor for visiting Isles fans cause we will be loud if even only our section hears my contigent. Frans back. Is this the turn around we needed. Man I love kool-aid

  8. avatar Mike L says:

The entire NHL schedule seems weird. There are rarely any games played during the week and a lot of games on the weekend. But next month I believe the schedule is all bunched up due to the olympic break. They couldn’t spread it out more? And it seems like half the league has played 50% more games than the other half. This schedule is awful.

  9. avatar Spartiarti-RVC says:

I agree, i feel win coming tonight. it will be first game im in attendance for this year. – just stay away from shootout.

CB – you didnt have to clarify for yesterday. We understood. The guys that didnt wont get what you meant today either.

  10. avatar rochfire says:

I agree about the schedule, it does seem AHLish, especially in Nov with every Fri and Sat and the occasional weeknighter.
I like the lines tonight, they seem to have more balance. Hopefully we can roll four and create some momentum in the offensive zone, barring any excessive special teams situations.

  11. avatar Jim says:

I’m feeling W tonight too, Washed Up!

  12. avatar Stumpy32 says:

The most unusual part about the schedule is the fact that we play only one home game between November 2-25, and then in December, we don’t leave Manhattan or Nassau Counties between December 9-31. Finally, we of course need to play our usual “if they’re still in contention, this will end any hopes” trip to the west coast in mid-March. I never got that.

  13. avatar Islesfan in Vancouver says:

very uncomfortable with Roloson starting. He’s looked very vulnerable to anything along the ice and has had a 5 hole you could drive a truck through so far this season, isn’t moving laterally well and isn’t tight to the post when needed. It kind of looks like he’s guessing a lot, rather than trusting in his ability and reading the play. I really don’t feel good about him starting tonight when we could really use a win.

One of the few, I really badly want to see DP back in the nets. He’s been so maligned over the last two years but the guy is a rock solid top NHL netminder when healthy. I can’t help thinking that with him in net we’d have a couple wins already this season.

  14. avatar duff says:

Gordon is our Barry Trotz (there may be a style of play difference, of course).

  15. avatar LIMBAUGH2012 says:

Scott the coach seems to much like one of the guys’, no back bone….When Al Arbour spoke you would listen…

  16. One player said that Scotty G didn’t breathe down your neck… maybe an Arbour style is necessary to light some fire.

    On topic: Weight sick? Bad.

  17. avatar cgs878 says:

The mid-March west coast trip happens because the Ringling Bros. circus comes to town and occupies the NVMC for a week. I like watching the west coast games. They always seem more exciting.

  18. avatar misterpink says:

That 2 for 73 stat speaks volumes about the true number of NHL caliber players we have shooting the puck. Nothings going to bring up that % like a little skill behind the stick.

  19. avatar bob l says:

thanks cb (and chris king) for the shots stats(reply), i dont know how he gets specific stats on periods, but that speaks volumes about the team not capitalizing on chances… “winning” the first period and having it be 0-0 isn’t a “win” and the more it happens the more it’s gotta drag on morale

  20. avatar southard says:

This is the Islander line up they should be putting out. I’m sick of everytime Sim touches the puck Rose and Jaffe act like it’s their own child out their on the ice complimenting everything he does. This isn’t nursery school it’s the NHL. Tambellini, Baily, and and Comeau is a solid line and at one time could’ve been the first line of the future(sort of). I want Tambellini to do something tonight, and to never look back. Hopefully he takes his opportunity and runs with it.

  21. avatar Tom says:

CB- there is no doubt the players like Scott Gordon as a coach. That was the feeling I got when reading yesterday’s entry. I also don’t think Gordon should be fired. I don’t think he’s a bonfide NHL coach, but I definitely don’t think a non-bonafide NHL GM should be doing any firing either. Gordon will be the coach for as long The Developer owns the team. Once he gets an answer on the LHP, he’ll sell the team…then Gordon & the back-up goalie-in-a-suit will be on the hot seat.

Give Gordon more time. Get rid of The Developer.

  22. avatar JTorBUST says:

I don’t mean to be captain negative , rather have the board be a lot more positive at times but why is Franz tabbed as the second coming of Trottier and the missing link. He is a soft mediocre 3rd line center who wouldn’t make most teams. Did i miss some games last year where he exploded and showed signs of being a legitimate center in this league ? And Garth , I know you read this , might be time to accept that Bailey is not the player you thought he was going to be , needs to be sent down to develop his game , only way he can be a star in this league.

  23. avatar James says:

The more and more I think about it, the more I like the idea of putting Okposo on a different line. Gordon is trying to create more than 1 really good line. If Moulson and JT can continue their great chemistry, that line will be fine no matter who the 3rd player is. Moving Okposo to another line will allow that line to become more productive as well.

  24. avatar Staten Islander says:

James #22 is right. As much as I’ve loved watching KO with JT and Matt Moulson, moving KO to another line is worth a try, they have to get more than one line going.

  25. avatar Bryan says:

If Weight can’t go, I think Schremp needs to get a chance with Tavares and Moulson. We need to put him with some skill players to get him going. I cant stand him when he is against the boards, but maybe if he gets a goal or 2 he will get more aggressive.

  26. Regarding that schedule oddity, I wish I had enough vacation time saved up at work. If I did, I’d be spending a long weekend in Montreal!

  27. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

I’ll agree with Buffalo (in which I suppose no time would be a good time to visit), but totally disagree with Montreal. One of my greatest hockey experiences was walking down Rue de St. Catherine on a snowy Saturday night in February for Isles-Habs at The Forum. That, mon ami, is Hockey Night in Canada!

  28. avatar Glen S says:

Why don’t they call up trever smith and give a shot if weight’s not able to go.
Schremp might be a good fight on that line as he does have good hands and playing with JT and Moulson might get him going if not I say bring smith or someone up form BP

  29. avatar jonsson3 says:

    Tavares-Moulson-Schremp please yes!
Love how Schremp looks, he just needs someone on his line who can finish.

    Sit Witt.

    1940 forever!!

  30. avatar terry says:

Thompson over schremp makes no sense. not a thompson hater but lets play guys who can help get a win. Being Gordons guy is more important then talent, Schremp has now found that out. Just another bad move on gordons part

  31. avatar Metalcoconut says:

Sim on the Tavares line? Really?

After 6 straight losses to start the season I would be throwing more than pucks the length of the ice. Especially when they are up by 3 goals.

Why not stick with Biron for a couple of games rather than performing the Curly Shuffle. Not that it isn’t entertaining but rather that it is obviously not helping the situation. When you “shake up the goalies” in each game where do you go from there? Why not let Rolly stew in it for a little while longer and give Biron a chance to get some rhythm going? It looks as if the players respond better to Biron anyway. Perhaps that is just my perception…

  32. avatar 74 says:

    great game-day notes, CB…thanks!

At least 4 Isle fans will be in Montreal tomorrow night! We’re driving up tomorrow. Would appreciate any tips or recommendations from anyone that’s been up there!

    Thanks

  33. avatar Jimfromstjames says:

Always was a fan of Rolo, but watching him in the shoot-out, I am starting to miss DP a little.

I have a once in a life time – tixx to the skybox next to Wangs, anybody want me to relay a message?

    (remember the guidlines )

Got a set to the same box last year & spent the game on the stairs talking to Jankowski, nice guy…
The only player among the injured that was in the box with Wang? DP

  34. avatar 318J1 says:

let Doug W8 sit this one out unless he is 100%!

Scratch N8 Thompson! either of Schremp or Sim would be a better choice!

I hope Roli can keep us in this game!

the nhl schedule is horrible! it would be best if every team played three games a week (every saturday, and no back to back nights!). But it would also make sense to get three points for a regulation win since there is two for an overtime/shootout win, one for an overtime/shootout loss, and zero for a regulation loss.

  35. avatar Brian in VA says:

Gotta say 5-2 Canes! JT and Kyle score… Sticking to my prediction of the Isles first win coming on 11/7 v. ATL.

  36. avatar Blizzard says:

….bold prediction….first win tonight!!!!LOL….gotta happen sometime. Little dissapointed in the KO, JT split but lets see how it works out. Welcome back Franzey, and Tambs. Should be interesting to see how Tambellini plays tonight.

  37. avatar Tim says:

Wow everyone’s calling for the win tonight… is this the same bunch that votes on MSG Network’s polls? Another lousy effort, another heartless loss, 4-1 Canes, and then probably another well-deserved off day. At least we won’t have to watch Jon Sim, Jaffe’s surprise player of the year, but unfortunately, we will have to hear Jaffe blabber endlessly two nights in a row.

  38. avatar Jim M says:

    Lets get a dubbbbbbbyaaaa tonight!!!!

  39. avatar Double W says:

Hey there 74….You cant go wrong on St. Catherine’s St.
Get some poutine and a smoked meat sandwich, and take the horse drawn carriage through old Montreal!
the first win of the season is in Montreal, sorry folks, not tonight, unless the Canes give Ward the night off.

  40. avatar John says:

Lets hope Roloson plays well. He’s looked a lot like Smitty did at the end of his career. I like the fact we are doing a complete rebuild. I’d like to make the playoffs in Febuary and not Back in in April. What I am really looking foward to is losing all of the negativity that surrounds this fan base. It sucks the air out of the room, even when they win.

  41. avatar StevieL says:

Weight is not as sick as us!! How bout a win! Go Isles!

  42. avatar StevieL says:

Also, Montreal is great city anytime! Buffalo closes after 5. It is a Ghost town downtown if there is not a Sabre game. Close to Niagra Falls though, always a nice visit!

  43. avatar TM says:

Any guesses on the attendance tonight?

If they got 12K on a holiday and 11K on Saturday against a great team I’d say 8K tonight.

    Welcome to LI Tavares.

  44. avatar Jim Clark says:

The only expectation I have from Franz Nielsen is that he will not fall down doing his pregame skate. Will the Islanders have more than 5,000 in NCVMC tonight? Yankees are off.

  45. avatar Tim says:

Yeah the winless Isles are filling the barn on a Wednesday night.

Actually I think the monopoly stops selling tix at noon or something on game day.

  46. avatar TM says:

This franchise/team just stinks. They can’t score, defense is god awful, goal tending is sub par, the coaching is dreadful, upper management can’t find their butt with a map and a flashlight, ownership doesn’t care and the fans rarely attend.

Let’s face it unless there is some kind of big turn around we are going to be the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals of the NHL with perpetually bad teams that won’t spend money to improve.

  47. avatar Eric says:

    #32

Montreal has some outstanding restaurants. Two favorites that were once recommended to me by Jiggs:

The Bar-B-Barn (Guy Street) –before or after the game — great ribs! Lots of hockey fans there.

Gibby’s (Old Montreal) –if you’re looking for a more elegant meal.

  48. avatar CJCB says:

Im falling asleep thinking about this game

  49. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Rob Schremp or Jon Sim for Doug Weight is not a good trade off.

If Weight cannot go I’d rather see Riechlecz. Car has more toughness then I thought they did and I don’t want to see Conboy elbowing Streit in the head ever chance he gets again.

The last thing the Isles need at this point is ANOTHER coaching change or even GM change.

What they do need is the GM to change his philosophy just a bit. He is very patient and that is great but sometimes you just have to address certain needs.

He knew he’d go into the year with Martinek and Geravis on the 2nd PP and that is just not good enough. When you look down from the owners box and you see Jon Sim on the 2nd PP you need to fix it.

If it’s a bridge to simply get you to the point where your young prospects can take over in a few years then great but continuing to ice the same defective roster is a tragic mistake.

  50. avatar Kevin says:

Is it just me or is Weight always under the weather. Better be in the lineup sick or not. We need a damn win and we need our Captain out there.

  51. avatar Gary P says:

I think the mix of lines is good. However, would have liked to see Park on the line with Tamby and Okposo. A few years back, when Frans scored his first NHL goal and Tamby scored, against Montreal, Park was on their line. I think Park is under utilized as a 4th line center. I hate to judge players on shoot outs, if so, Tamby would be our star not Okposo. Look at their records on shoot outs. I just think the system that is used, on paper, looks great, but it makes our D have to get back too quickly..If you look at the goals scored by our D, Sutton, Martinek and Striet, they were scored from their normal position on D.

  52. avatar admin says:

Latest I’m hearing is that Doug Weight is planning to play tonight…CB

  53. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Wow there is NO ONE there tonight. Kinda sad that this team can’t draw during the week. Aren’t the fans suppose to be “behind” the rebuild? Seems like there will be a lot of johnny come lately’s when the Isles are good in a few years.

  54. avatar MattyB says:

Sports is a what have you done for me lately thing. If we they they fans will be there obviously. Die Hards will always go, but in the economy, people aren’t going on a wednesday night to see an 0-3-3 team, Tavares or not. Lets go Isles!

  55. avatar MattyB says:

    If we win*

  56. avatar Staten Islander says:

    moulson AGAIN!

  57. avatar Ali says:

Might be a bit early to break up 21 and 91. Neilson weight and Bergie could be a good secund line.

    Go Moulson…

    Tamby is flying.

  58. avatar Bruce says:

    nice job sutts!

  59. avatar teddyfusi says:

    hahahah what is moulsons deal!

  60. avatar UIF says:

Where the heck did they find this Moulson? I know this pace can’t possibly last, but man, he’s having some start.

  61. avatar NickyL says:

Moulson is the steal of the year so far. 5G 3A in 7 games. Wow.

  62. avatar Jay says:

nice goal moulson and way to move your legs sutts……as for the empty coliseum….its wed night and tix are really expensive……oh well….when they start winning every game will be full

  63. avatar Ali says:

Can we chip in and buy Baily a ticket to Bridgeport. He has the tools, he’s just clearly not ready.

  64. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Great fight by Witt. Now he can’t be on the ice for 5 minutes!

  65. avatar Bruce says:

    witt got owned

  66. avatar beatlebailey says:

Witt just got rocked I would say no more than 7k in the house

  67. avatar Dylan Prior says:

Let’s not worry about the attendance-we all know people on Long Island don’t realize it’s hockey season til about Thanksgiving. It happens every year, yet people act surprised every October when they see an empty Coliseum.

  68. avatar JPinVA says:

Sim has 8 goals in 20 games against CAR.
Thompson and Tambellini have 13 career goals in 194 games COMBINED.
Bailey has 6 SOG in 6 games. Schremp has 11 in 5.

  69. avatar Matt says:

josh bailey stinks. i am sorry but snow made a huge mistake taking this kid. not only is he the slowest player on the ice the kid looks lazy.

  70. avatar tom says:

tavares missed empty net number 20 on that powerplay

  71. avatar Dominick from NC says:

CB..Watching on Fox sports Carolina…was that you sitting by John Forslund and Tripp Tracy? Go Isles!

  72. avatar KO21 says:

Where did this Moulson, guy, come from??? Every time he scores, I think he’s getting lucky and then he does it again, and again…

  73. avatar Staten Islander says:

saw that one coming, the canes kept testing roie’s stick side

  74. avatar Terrance says:

I’ve gotta hand it to the Isles marketing team. I’m surprised there are as many fans at the game as there are.

How the marketing team is able to find over 8,000 people to spend their entertainment dollars watching this team on a Wednesday night is beyond me.

  75. avatar Ali says:

Why do we look so different this period. It’s like we stopped skating and started gliding.

  76. avatar Justin says:

This game looks a lot like the Sharks game. Good first period, had a lead, then gave up a power-play goal and the momentum shifts to the opposition. I expect the same result.

  77. avatar teddyfusi says:

i guess the islanders disagree #76

  78. avatar Staten Islander says:

    3-1, nice response

  79. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

it’s that potent Jackman – Sutton combo tonight! Go Isles!

  80. avatar Justin says:

I hope they make a fool out of me. Jackman and Sutton? Are you kidding me?

  81. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

Jackman off a skate and the rear end of a carolina player, and sutton cruising near the front of the carolina net with a tip in. No joke…well..it’s funny, but it’s true!

  82. avatar Staten Islander says:

Rolison seems a lot better tonight

  83. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

“little” better. He still looks a little dodgy with anything around his feet and two posts so far.

  84. avatar Joe B says:

the Park Jackman Thompson line is playing great tonight

  85. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Keep rolling out 4 lines Flash … this is the most inspired play I’ve seen for a solid 2 periods. That energy line gives the other 3 more rest… and a more balanced attack overall.

  86. avatar JPinVA says:

3-1 going into the third period… so the only question I have is, “Who will Gordon use in the shootout?” :-)
Let’s hope they can get 2 tonight!

  87. avatar beatlebailey says:

Wonder how many seats were giveaways and really it is embarassing that a pro team in ny draws this poorly. As a season ticketholder I can’t give my tix away never mind trying to sell the games I can’t use

  88. avatar Jim M says:

Okposo has been quiet, going to be a real good period for him I think

  89. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

#86 … I used to go to Yankee Stadium in the late 80s early 90s and the old cathedral was half empty at times. Winning brings the fans in. People in LI and the NYC area have lots of other important things to spend their money on in this economy.

That being said … we know if the ownership puts a full NHL squad on the ice the team has a chance at winning any given night, and the fans will come.

  90. avatar Islesin2010 says:

Streits second penalty of the game and more generally he just doesn’t look sharp tonight. Guy gets a break, but he hasn’t seemed as confident the last few games.

Tambellini looks like the best player on that line tonight. Bailey is completely out of the discussion and there’s something about Comeau I just don’t like, too much fancy not enough basics. Like his physicality though. Defense looks decent tonight.

This ice is awful. Why can the coliseum not get a good ice surface until New Year’s? I don’t hear Howie and Billy complaining about poor ice in Atlanta, Florida, Tampa. Why NVMC??

  91. avatar Justin says:

I’m sure that won’t be the last time that someone takes a late hit or roughs up Tavares this season. Nice job by Sutton on standing up to Alberts.

  92. Andy Sutton with Gordie Howe hat-trick, how about that.

  93. avatar BringBackNyles says:

For the folks who are wondering why the Islanders schedule is
AHLish” with a lot of games Friday/Saaturday….check out the attendance the Isles get Saturday vs the weeknights.

I am sure the Isles requested as many weekend games as possible

  94. avatar MattyB says:

How is that not a penalty on Alberts?…That was at least 2 to 3 seconds after Tavares took a shot, and the ref was looking right at it.

  95. avatar Staten Islander says:

    DAMN! here we go again

  96. avatar purify says:

    gordon take a timeot !!!

  97. avatar tom says:

    ugh don’t blow it AGAIN

  98. avatar WEHM Anthony says:

Is Roloson wearing Red, White, and Blue pads… CB did he switch back to some old equipment or something like that???

  99. avatar tom says:

on second thought, fire this guy

  100. avatar nyislanders93 says:

Blown lead. Who could’ve seen that coming?

  101. avatar Bruce says:

    knew that was coming

  102. avatar JPinVA says:

    Why call time out?

  103. avatar Justin says:

Tired team in the 3rd period…again. Wonder why?

  104. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Another third period meltdown..but don’t blame the coach it’s just a coincidence these last 2 years

  105. avatar Jerry says:

    scripted much?

  106. avatar dp says:

    Unbelievable, and awful.

  107. avatar shinkdew says:

How is Gordon’s fault that Sutton couldn’t clear the puck even with Carolina making a line change?

  108. avatar Islesphan25 says:

This has nothing to do with the coach or the system. It has to do with the players not executing like they should. Players running into each other, bad clearing attempts.

Plus. Jeff T. Been all over the ice. Playing a great game. Sorry Sim enjoy the Pine.

  109. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

Roloson took himself out of the play on the first goal, he was wayyy too far over, the second goal was a bad bounce and defensive breakdown.

Hopefully they can get it together on this powerplay, best move by tambs in quite a while to draw that penalty.

  110. avatar Terrance says:

There’s the team I know and love.

I was shocked when I saw they were closing in on a win.

Does Roloson get paid to miss a few just to keep things close?

  111. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

Guys are showing alot of jump, fight, and toughness tonight especially the 4th line and Sutton. It was nice to see Witt drop the gloves too. I like Okposo with JT and Moulson though. I think Gordon should move him back to that line since it works so no need to break it up. Shuffle the 2nd and 3rd lines if anything. Let’s see now if the team can overcome some adversity.

  112. avatar DanNOLA says:

How did I know? Oh yeah, this happens every single game.

  113. avatar Jim M says:

    comical, really

  114. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

    this team is god awful.

  115. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Well who do we blame for constant third period meltdowns over the Gordon tenure? Sparky? Ice Girls careless sweeping? kate Murray?

  116. avatar Jerry says:

    Let the OT loss begin

  117. avatar 2Bit says:

    seriously?

  118. avatar Jerry says:

and they wonder why people aren’t showing up?

  119. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Has nothing to do with the coach.

  120. avatar Justin says:

Every time the Isles have a multiple-goal lead in the 3rd period, I always think, “Maybe, just maybe, they can get a point out of this.”

  121. avatar Jerry says:

they’ve shown they can get the one point. it’s that second one that is a pipe dream.

  122. avatar Peter T says:

    #87

How can you think it is embarassing for the team to draw this poorly?

If anything, I would think it’s rather impressive that the team was somehow able to get over nine thousand people to show up tonight.

If Mr. Wang starts to open up his wallet and fund the team, maybe his customers would too.

  123. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Islanders new 3rd period goal music for the opposition? To Led Zeppelin’s Communication Break Down …. change to … 3rd Period Breakdown.

  124. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

hurry back DP. We haven’t had a goalie play well since you’ve been gone.

  125. avatar Jon #2 says:

    Fire Gordon, Snow and Wang.

  126. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Nice of the Isles to play Mr Brownstone..watching the third period I could use heroin to forget about now.

  127. avatar Imissfritz says:

Teams take runs at Okposo and Tavares you are a team with no wins get toughness now

  128. avatar tom says:

better score in ot, rollie cant stop a breakaway

  129. avatar Peter T. says:

Why are you guys blaming Gordon? He is not one of the untalented AHL rejects on the ice, he is simply doing the best that can be done with the crap that Wang gives him.

    This evening’s payrolls:

    Carolina Hurricanes: $55,000,000
    New York Islanders: $43,000,000

  130. avatar Daniel says:

This team has no mental toughness. Win or lose in the shootout or OT this was another embarrassing game.

  131. avatar Islesphan25 says:

Its part of the rebuild. You NEED TO LEARN how to win

  132. avatar Islesin2010 says:

It’s a good thing we have our shootout specialist in goal wink wink

  133. avatar Justin says:

    Park, Witt, Thompson

  134. avatar jerry-wantagh says:

Blame the players, not the coach.

  135. avatar Bri on Li says:

of course Rollie the Goalie’s in goal, here comes the pain…

  136. avatar jspitz says:

Can someone please explain to me how John Tavares gets one shift in OT? I understand it’s 5 mins and only 2 forwards at a time, but (in my opinion) he should not be on the 4th pair of forwards sent out.

  137. avatar Jerry says:

a coach is responsible for his players.

  138. avatar DanNOLA says:

Now, if only Tambs can do that during any of the first 3 periods…

  139. avatar WM says:

    WE WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  140. avatar Staten Islander says:

    and BOOM goes the dynomite!

  141. avatar IslesinOside says:

OH MY GOD……WE WON THE STANLEY CUP!!!!!!!!! sorry it just feels like it

  142. avatar Bri on Li says:

ok, i’ll take that back. LET’S GO ISLES!

  143. avatar greg says:

    parade time

  144. avatar James says:

note to Gordon, great shootout lineup lol

    keep them there lol

  145. avatar 2Bit says:

Perhaps this was the most fitting way for the Isles to get their first win.

  146. avatar joe says:

FINALLLLLLLLLY OMG!!!!!!!!! feels like i won the lottery

  147. avatar Chris A says:

At 9:45 PM on October 21, 2009 the New York Islanders win… this is not a fluke the Islanders win

  148. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Parade to the Marriott has been cancelled, Kate Murray has yet to process the permit

  149. avatar Brother Rat says:

hell yeah! and we found a use for Tamby, wow….

  150. avatar IslesinOside says:

Did anybody else see Rolosons stick fall in front of the puck??????????????

  151. avatar tom says:

iam frans, my backhand move is unstoppable

  152. avatar StevieL says:

My God! JT makes all the pain worthwhile! Already my most favorite Isle since Ziggy!! Thought Tamby was solid! He is “money” in shootouts!!
Sutton our Norris candidate! Awesome night!

  153. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

See what happens when you put 3 offensively skilled players in the shootout! Thank goodness Gordon didn’t get another brainfart while setting the shootout lineup. I do wish he’d use Tamby more on the powerplay. He wrist shot is a thing of beauty.

  154. avatar Islesin2010 says:

Bri on Li makes me laugh. it’s ok to flip flop if they win i guess. Cant wait for the bashing if they lose tomorrow. Tambellini was good tonight, he still needs to do that during the actual game… and maybe think about another shootout move, just in case teams catch on to his biggest strength. Can’t wait to the plus/minus CB, plenty of material for ya :)

  155. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

That was the perfect trio of shooters … the guys with the wicked wristers!!

  156. avatar purify says:

    pete t

how much of our payroll still goes to yashin? take his millions away and its less.

  157. The biggest minus was the quality of the friging ice. Unwatchable…

  158. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

    Plus – They Won!

    Plus – It’s a start.

Minus – No time to savor the victory … Habs tomorrow night.

  159. avatar mike says:

This AHL coach is a JOKE, last 30 seconds of game Thompson over JT, in OT 2:51 seconds in before JT sees the ice while USELESS bailey had 3 shifts by then. I’m getting to the point I am with the Mets until they get rid of this JOKE coach and GM it is real hard to watch.Did I mention ANOTHER blown lead?
    FIRE GORDON!

  160. avatar James says:

1st win tonight, 1-3-3; 4 we have points in 4 of 7 games; really could be worse I guess lol

but we could actually have a record that is much better than this, just figure out how to avoid these breakdowns. There are some guys tonight who showed they can play in the NHL. Sutton was really awesome tonight

anyway to the guy who said our first win wont be until ATL on 11/7; are you going to come on and say our NEXT win wont be until 11/7 lol

  161. avatar KO21 says:

Does Tamby have the best wrister in the league???Too bad he cant put it to good use in the games

  162. avatar cody says:

I love that Taveres lives for these moments. He had a huge grin before his game winning shootout goal. What other rookie loves pressure that much?
