de HAAN INJURED IN FIRST JUNIOR GAME
Suffers upper body injury in return to Oshawa

11:55 am - Islanders 2009 12th overall draft pick Calvin de Haan missed his final days of Islanders training camp with a groin strain. In his first game back Thursday night with Oshawa of the Ontario League, he suffered another injury. During the second period of the Generals’ 5-4 loss in Peterborough, de Haan missed a check on Zach Kassian and fell awkwardly into the boards. Kassian scored on the play, De Haan left the game immediately and the team announced that he suffered an upper body injury. No further details.

Lower body injuries on the Isles. Upper body injuries on Oshawa. Hope this isn’t bad.

  2. 2 Staten Islander

Let me be the 1st……….HR SHOULD HAVE STAYED UP WITH THE BIG CLUB! ok, sarcasm off, hopefully this isnt too serious

  3. 3 beatlebailey

Wtf we are a cursed franchise

  4. 4 Strummer's Army

De Haan and Kassian will be forever linked.

Congrats to Weight. I wonder how the A’s will be split up (who’s get’s it at home vs. the road?).

Who saw this coming? Can some other team take a turn with the injuries please? It’s been 10 years since the Isles have been a healthy team.

  6. 6 StevieL

Strummer I was thinking the same thing. All the players in Junior and it’s Kassian that blows by him and scores! I hope the kid is alright. He looks like a player!!
Also any truth to the rumour that the league is requesting Isle players and prospects put numbers on the bottom of their skates and the top of their helmets to help identify them as they are laid out!! How about the one that the Ice girls also have stretcher duty this year!! Gotta laugh or go crazy. I have never seen such a run of injuries! It is nuts!
Hey did Duchene remind anyone else of Modano tonight? The kid looks like a player! Still would rather have Tavares!

  7. 7 Al L

GEEZ!!!!! What the hell is going to happen next!! It would behoove Tavares to say a few prayers tonight and take the ice with a flack jacket, armor plated shoulder pads, steel shin guards and last but not least grow a pair of eyes in the back of his head! Its bad enough our future on LI looks bleak, now we have to suffer ‘Groundhog Day’ perpetually!!! Get well soon Calvin!!

“Upper body injury”, “no further details”…. CONCUSSION!?
Just kidding…I hope we get further details that accurately inform us that he’s okay. I most likely won’t be back on this thread to read comments saying “we should have picked Kassian”

  9. 9 big dally mac

    Ironic isn’t it….de Haan and Kassian…wow

  10. 10 CIsle

Quite a shame. Hope it’s not too serious.

Good camp, but groin and “upper body” problems within 10 days are not good things.

  11. 11 WM

It’s gotten to the point where I’m afraid to even access CB’s blog. Here we are, October 2nd, and we’re already looking at a MASH unit.

  12. 12 Joey303

I agree with #3 - its a curse. The Hockey Gods getting back at the little franchise that could for 80-83. How DARE we win 4 cups in a row - Sacre Bleu!!

  13. 13 Bryan

I think Oshawa needs to fire their training staff too…

  14. 14 Harold C

    # 9, yeah very ironic. DeHaan gets hurt trying to check the we SHOULD have taken…typical.

  15. 15 Sumo Goalie

I guess we should have kept him for the 9 games.

  16. 16 Dan from Westchester

As several have already stated. . Unbelievable irony in that story. . wow

  17. 17 thepolishprince

Who cares about Kassian, we have Martin signed for three years and he seems like a keeper. I hope deHaan’s injury is nothing serious. The kid has some serious skills and smarts.

  18. 18 islesfan999

Bailey was also hurt last yr. Hopefully its a minor injury.

  19. 19 Blizzard

…agree we have Martin, no need for Kassian. Hope its nothing serious for the kid. He looks like he is gonna be a player.

  20. 20 Matt

relax people, it happens. the islanders have had some bad luck but it’s not like we are the only organization that has injuries.

  21. 21 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Yeah … the irony … and as others have stated … We have Martin.. so Kassian can go scratch for all I care.

Looking back in retrospect de Haan should have the better NHL career … that is if he can stay in one piece.

Seriously … upper body injury … it could be a bruised shoulder, strained muscle … it could be a precaution … I didn’t see the missed check … but it seems the Isles and their prospects can’t seem to get out of the way of the injury gremlin.

I’m sure Calvin will be just fine… it is just a shame it had to happen.

  22. 22 Spartiarti - RVC

DeHaan Missed a check. he has plenty of time to heal before he on isles.
All we know is He going to be a NHL stud For him to be that poised, smooth and comfortable in preseason you just know he has it. Tambellini still hasnt adjusted.

    Looking foward to tomorrow.

Sucks the ToH detail going to go and pass. I hate this LH overhang.
Anthony Santino was on my Rockville Centre platform and boy did i give him a verbal lashing.

I said “why stand of this platform. I said go approve the LH or there is no way you getting my vote” His response
have you seen the size of it?”. and that when i lost it.

I said. “it took you to the month before the deadline to notice project was big. you had 2 yrs to talk and suggest good scaledown plans. Now with 3 days before you are telling met he Project is huge.” Approve it, or you dont have a chance to get re-elected.”

  23. 23 Frustrated Voter

Yikes! Somebody has a voodoo doll of the Islanders and is sticking pins in all our players. Mad Mike is at it again (or maybe it’s Neil Smith). This string of bad luck (aka the Curse of Milbury) has to end soon…doesn’t it?

  24. 24 vukota

How long before somebody comes on here and blames the Isles medical staff for Dehaan’s injury??

  25. 25 j

    sell the team!

  26. 26 JKP in Halifax

So the Islanders’ injury bug is contagious and travels. Nice. :(

  27. 27 Marc from Troy

Well done, Spartiarti. Call out the bums every chance you get.

  28. 28 drive45

Good for you Spartarti - keep on that guy. What was his response after you said that to him?

DeHaan is never injured before…spends a few weeks with our training staff…then two injuries. Did we make a deal with the devil for 4 cups and are now in payback?

  29. 29 Matt H.

As we all know (too well), injuries are a part of hockey. I have to assume CdH will heal and be just fine soon enough. His time on the island (Queens?) is a year or two away, so he has plenty of time to heal, continue his development and put on some muscle.

Stay positive Isles fans; the first game of the year has not even been played yet.

  30. 30 jimfromstjames

can’t make this stuff up, De Haan & Kassian, Kate & Charlie. Hate to get the conspiracy guys going but I’m starting to think, Maybe…

  31. 31 Spartiarti - RVC

he response was he was speechless. I could of kept going and made a real embarassment on him on platform but train arrive.

Last time he was at station Murray will be there one of these days soon too. i woke up extra early today hoping she would be there.

Hopefully she there next week. I going to make her cry like Leno did Kayne West.

  32. 32 gary

this kid could be good–He has to bulk up, get stronger which will help him avoid the injury bug–Good decision to send him down.. Hope he hits the weight room big time for the year and off season–He adds 20 lbs muscle and watch out!

  33. 33 Chris TMC

Best of luck to “deCal” (I love that sorry) for a quick return to action.

And way to go, Spartiarti RVC- thumbs up! “D
